Assessing lameness prevalence and associated risk factors in crossbred dairy cows across diverse management environments

BackgroundA thorough understanding of lameness prevalence is essential for evaluating the impact of this condition on the dairy industry and assessing the effectiveness of preventive strategies designed to minimize its occurrence. Therefore, this cross-sectional study aimed to ascertain the prevalence of lameness and identify potential risk factors associated with lameness in Holstein Friesian crossbred cows across both commercial and smallholder dairy production systems in Bengaluru Rural District of Karnataka, India.MethodsThe research encompassed six commercial dairy farms and 139 smallholder dairy farms, involving a total of 617 Holstein Friesian crossbred cattle. On-site surveys were conducted at the farms, employing a meticulously designed questionnaire. Lameness in dairy cattle was assessed subjectively using a locomotion scoring system. Both bivariate and binary logistic regression models were employed for risk assessment, while principal components analysis (PCA) was conducted to address the high dimensionality of the data and capture the underlying structure of the explanatory variables.ResultsThe overall lameness prevalence of 21.9% in commercial dairy farms and 4.6% in smallholder dairy farms. Various factors such as age, body weight, parity, body condition score (BCS), floor type, hock and knee injuries, animal hygiene, provision of hoof trimming, and the presence of hoof lesions were found to be significantly associated with lameness. Binary logistic regression analysis indicated that the odds of lameness in crossbred cows increased with higher parity, decreased BCS, presence of hard flooring, poor animal hygiene, and the existence of hoof lesions. These factors were identified as potential risk factors for lameness in dairy cows. Principal component analysis unveiled five components explaining 71.32% of the total variance in commercial farms and 61.21% in smallholder dairy farms. The extracted components demonstrated higher loadings of housing and management factors (such as hoof trimming and provision of footbath) and animal-level factors (including parity, age, and BCS) in relation to lameness in dairy cows.ConclusionsThe findings suggest that principal component analysis effectively reduces the dimensionality of risk factors. Addressing these identified risk factors for lameness is crucial for the strategic management of lameness in dairy cows. Future research in India should investigate the effectiveness of management interventions targeted at the identified risk factors in preventing lameness in dairy cattle across diverse environments.

Assessment of nutrient flows in maize-based farming system by smallholder farmers for sustainable production in Ikara, Kaduna State

Nutrient depletion is one of the major causes of decreased crop yield, and a threat to food security and sustainable crop production. NutMon- toolbox was used to determine nutrient flows and partial nutrient balances of maize-based smallholders’ farming system. Data was collected using structured questionnaire from 15 randomly selected farmers, with five farmers each in three villages. Composite soil samples were also taken from each of the three plots. At crop maturity, samples of crop products and residues were randomly taken from the selected fields. Nitrogen, P and K contents in soil and crop material was used to calculate nutrient flows and partial balances. Results obtained revealed that mineral fertilizer flow, averaged 349.20kg N yr-1 and 81.45kg K yr-1 and were lower than 376.65kg N yr-1 and 431.44kg K yr-1 organic input. However, phosphorus in mineral fertilizer (55.78kg P yr-1) was higher compared to phosphorus (51.06 kg P ha-1 yr-1) in organic input. Nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium for maize seeds and crop residue were all negative. The partial nutrient balances were positive 53.45kg N ha-1 yr-1 and 79.40kg K ha-1 but negative 1.10kg P ha-1 yr-1. Harvesting of crops for food, without incorporation of crop residue into the soil, were the most important sources of nutrient mining in smallholder production system. Integrated soil fertility management practices that favour the buildup of soil organic matter and use of animal manure should be encouraged through effective extension services at Ikara, Kaduna State, Nigeria.

Climate Smart Agriculture and its Implication on Climate Change Adaptation Measures within Smallholder Farming Systems in Gatundu South, Kenya

The impacts of climate change and the need for implementing adaptation and mitigation measures continues to dominate global environmental dialogue, with the Africa Climate Summit 2023 and Conference of Parties 28 being the most recent in this series. A hitherto marginalised aspect is the level of adoption of climate-smart agriculture practices in smallholder production systems. This study explored this dimension using Gatundu South as a case study. Rainfall data was obtained from the Climate Hazards Group Infrared Precipitation with Station data. Socio-economic data targeting 384 respondents was collected using questionnaires. Standard procedures were used to analyse these data. Results showed that farmers are generally aware of climatic variability especially as evidenced by changes in rainfall patterns. Farmers adapt and attempt to mitigate effects of climate change and variability by using practices that deliver direct economic benefits and not necessarily the climate-smartness of the practices. Farmers did not associate their adaptation measures with the need to reduce emission of greenhouse gasses. To smallholder farmers, direct economic benefits are the primary incentives for the adoption of climate-smart practices. Further, the link between climate change and the invisible greenhouse gases is a knowledge gap among smallholder farmers. Therefore, adoption of climate smart agriculture practices can be enhanced if the narrative shifts to emphasise the negative contribution of greenhouse gases to farmers’ health and the concomitant medical costs, through their role in exacerbating air pollution

Collective action, replanting and resilience; Key lessons from 40 years of smallholder oil palm cultivation in the Ophir plantation, Indonesia

CONTEXTOil palm smallholders often have difficulty implementing good agricultural practices and replanting, and tend to obtain low yields compared to corporate plantations. A frequent strategy to improve the sustainability of smallholder production systems is sustainable intensification, aimed at increasing land productivity and farmers' incomes. To facilitate sustainable intensification, many leading public and private sustainability initiatives require farmers to join farmer organisations as a precondition for certification and assistance, with the objective of achieving advantages of scale. OBJECTIVEThe objective of this article is to analyse the resilience of farmer organisations in the Ophir plantation when faced with replanting. We do so by linking actors, situations, and contexts relevant to collective action in five farmer cooperatives in Ophir over a 40-year period. Our aim is to offer unique insights into the enduring dynamics that influence the resilience of farmer organisations, shed light on smallholder oil palm replanting strategies, and draw several key lessons from this case. METHODSOur findings are based on field visits by the lead author before, during and after replanting. Both qualitative and quantitative data were collected to enable a holistic overview. During visits, 110 interviews with relevant stakeholders were recorded, project reports were collected, as were data on yields, costs, and other information on the functioning of the farming system. Analysis of high-resolution satellite imagery of the Ophir plantation and plantation inspections allowed us to further quantify replanting methods and replanting progress. A combined IAD-SES-NAS framework was used to structure findings and link variables, key events and context. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONSOur results show that farmer organisations can facilitate sustainable intensification in smallholder systems, but the resilience of farmer organisations proved diverse during replanting. Thus, farmer organisations are by no means a silver bullet for sustainable intensification. Landscape conditions, palm tree age, smallholder diversity and financial (mis)management play crucial roles in the resilience of farmer organisations and replanting strategies. Significant investment in various types of collective action is needed to encourage sustainable intensification through farmer organisations. SIGNIFICANCEThis article reports a rare holistic analysis of the bio-physical, socio-economic, and institutional aspects impacting collective action and replating in smallholder oil palm plantations. We present significant empirical data, which allows us to link 40 years of interactions between farmers, their institutions, plantations and changing contexts. Thereby we provide unique insights into farmer organisations, collective action and smallholder oil palm replanting.

Combined effects of climate change and agricultural intensification on soil erosion in uphill shifting cultivation in Northeast India

AbstractShifting cultivation will face increasing pressure from erosion‐related land degradation caused by rising cultivation intensities and climate change. However, empirical knowledge about future trends of soil erosion and thus land degradation in shifting cultivation systems is limited. We use the Environmental Policy Integrated Climate (EPIC) model to first explore the combined effects of climate change and agricultural intensification on soil erosion of uphill shifting cultivation systems, using six surveyed soil profiles. We assess interactions between climate change, the length of the fallow period, and slope inclinations for a near (2021–2050) and far (2071–2100) future period, considering three climate scenarios, five climate models, fallow periods between one and 20 years, and slopes between five and 70% steepness. Our results show a significant nonlinear relationship between global warming and erosion. Until the end of the century, erosion is estimated to increase by a factor of 1.2, 2.2, and 3.1 under the SSP126, SSP370, and SSP585 scenarios, respectively, compared with the historical baseline (1985–2014). Combined effects from climate change, fallow length, and slope inclination indicate that steep slopes require longer fallow periods, with an increase of slope from 5% to 10% multiplying the required fallow length by a mean factor of 2.5, and that fallow periods will need to be extended under higher global warming if erosion rates are to remain at current levels. These findings are novel as they link climate change effects on shifting cultivation systems to different slopes and fallow regimes, making an important contribution to understanding future erosion dynamics of traditional smallholder production systems in mountainous terrain, with relevant implications for policies on agricultural intensification.

Genome-wide runs of homozygosity in Indian goat breeds reared under small holder production system

Small holder goat production system is often constrained by high inbreeding due to small herd size and uncontrolled breeding. Runs of homozygosity (ROH), the long stretches of homozygous genomic DNA is the most reliable measure of autozygosity. The objective of present study was to investigate the number and coverage of ROH in the genome and to estimate the genomic inbreeding coefficient (FROH) in two divergent Indian goat breeds viz; Attappady Black and Malabari goats farmed under small holder production system. The genome-wide single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) marker data obtained by Illumina SNP50 goat BeadChip genotyping of 48 goats (24 each of Attappady Black and Malabari goats) sampled from farmers flock in their respective breeding tract was utilised for ROH detection. The ROH of > 1 Mb was defined as tracts of homozygous genotypes with at least 15 SNPs and less than five missing SNPs. The ROH detection was carried out with PLINK 1.9 version. The proportion of goats lacking ROH (per cent) was 66.67 in Attappady Black and 39.13 in Malabari goats. The mean number and length of ROH of 1 Mb or more was higher in Malabari goats (2.1304 ± 0.6369 and 6.0016 ± 0.5271 Mb) compared to Attappady Black goats (0.4583 ± 0.1343 and 4.0197 ± 0.3755 Mb). Mean ± S.E of sum of ROH coverage of genome per individual (SROH) was 1.8423 ± 0.05976 and 8.8236 ± 1.2785 Mb in Attappady Black and Malabari goats, respectively and differed among the two breeds significantly (p ≤ 0.05). Analysis of the distribution of ROH according to their length showed that majority of the detected ROH were < 8 Mb in length in both breeds with no ROH of > 8 Mb in Attappady Black goats. Mean ± S.E of genomic inbreeding coefficient (FROH≥1 Mb) in per cent was 0.519 ± 0.19 and 0.07480 ± 0.0243 in Malabari goats and Attappady Black goats, respectively. The pattern of ROH estimated in the present analysis indicates the inbreeding history of the goats farmed under small holder production system. Results of present study indicate that both breeds are less consanguineous and showed no evidence of recent inbreeding.

Assessment of carbon footprint of milk production and identification of its major determinants in smallholder dairy farms in Karnataka, India

Indian dairy enterprise is dominated by smallholder dairy farms that contribute 72% of the country's total milk production. These smallholder dairy farms are often considered to emit substantial greenhouse gases (GHG) but are poor in productive performances. Therefore, it is crucial to estimate the carbon footprint (CF) of milk production of the smallholder Indian dairy farms. The primary objectives of the study were (1) Assessing the CF of milk production of smallholder dairy farms through life cycle analysis in south-interior Karnataka, India; (2) Identifying the hotspots of GHG emissions and significant factors influencing the CF of milk production in smallholder dairy production system. The study accounted GHG emissions from different sources and considered multiple functions of the smallholder production system. Estimations were made based on primary data collected from 47 farms and associated secondary data. For estimating the CF of milk production, the emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and nitrous oxide (N2O) on a CO2-equivalent (CO2-eq) basis from feed production, enteric fermentation, manure management, transport and energy usage were allocated to fat- and protein-corrected milk (FPCM) based on mass balance, price (crop byproducts and residues) and feed digestibility. Principal component analysis and stepwise linear regression analysis were performed to identify the major factors influencing the CF. The average total GHG emissions (kg CO2-eq yr-1 farm-1) attributable to milk production based on mass, economic, and digestibility allocations were 8,936, 8,641, and 8,759, respectively. The contributions of CH4, N2O, and CO2 to the total farm GHG emission were 70.6%, 20.5%, and 7.69%, respectively. The major emission hotspots were CH4 emission from enteric fermentation (66.8%) and GHG emission from feed production (23.0%). The average CF of cradle-to-dairy cooperative milk production varied from 1.45 to 1.81 kg CO2-eq kg FPCM-1. The CF of milk production was more than 2-fold greater, when milk yield was below 3,500 kg lactating cow-1 yr-1. The FPCM yield 100 kg body weight-1, dry matter intake, and CH4 emission from manure management were the strongest determinants of the CF and explained 83.4% of the observed variation. The study emphasized the importance of considering multiple functions of a mixed crop-livestock-based dairy production system for estimating CF per unit of product. The results suggest that maintaining high-yielding dairy animals and adopting appropriate feeding strategies for better feed utilization are the possible effective interventions for reducing the CF of milk production.

Linkage disequilibrium and effective population size in Indian goat breeds

Genomic linkage disequilibrium (LD) is an important population diversity measure and an indicator determining the efficacy of genomic applications. The present population genomic study was carried out to comprehensively characterise the extent and pattern of LD in the two divergent Indian goat breeds namely, Attappady Black and Malabari goats reared under small holder production system. The LD was estimated using genome-wide single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) marker data obtained by Illumina SNP50 goat BeadChip genotyping. The LD between adjacent SNPs across all autosomes measured as correlation coefficient (r2) in the studied population was low and mean ± standard deviation of LD were 0.0657 ± 0.0921 and 0.0661 ± 0.0911 for Attappady Black and Malabari goats, respectively. The LD varied significantly (p < 0.0001) among chromosomes, interaction between chromosome and breed and among marker intervals. The LD (r2) of 0.2 and 0.3 were extended up to 20 kb and 10 kb marker intervals, respectively. Based on the genomic data, Ne was estimated as 512.8198 in Malabari and 371.2220 in Attappady Black goats at 17 generations back. The weak LD observed in Indian goat breeds indicates increased diversity of these Indian goat breeds and also implies that denser SNP panel might be more beneficial for genomic applications.

Reproduction and production performance of improved chickens, their production constraints, and opportunities under Ethiopian conditions.

Chickens have important roles in human food security and social and cultural values throughout the world. The current review focused on improved chickens' reproduction and production performance, their production constraints, and opportunities under Ethiopian conditions. The review covered nine performance traits, thirteen commercial breeds, and eight crossbreds between commercial breeds, and local chicken. The genotypes affected the age of the first egg, eggs per hen per year, and average egg weight. The three exotic breeds with short ages at first egg were Lohmann Brown, Novo Brown, and Potchefstroom Koekoek at 137, 140, and 142 days, respectively. The three genotypes with the highest egg production were Sasso T44, Bovans Brown, and Isa Browns laying 229, 235, and 276 eggs per hen per year. The three with the highest egg weight were Isa Browns, Bovans Brown, and Sasso T44 with their eggs weighing 58.8, 60.3, and 65.6 g each, respectively. Crossbreeding indigenous chicken with exotic breeds improved the age at first egg-lay, eggs per hen per year, and egg weigh. Crossbreeding indigenous chicken with exotic breeds shortened the age at first egg-lay. Crossbred of indigenous chicken with Fayoumi, Rhode Island Red, and White Leghorn reduced age at first egg-lay to 196.0, 198.3 and 224.3 days, respectively. Crossbreeding Dominant Red Barred with indigenous chicken reduced the age at first egg-lay from 137.3 to 130.7 days. Among the crossbred chicken, crossing between local chicken and Fayoumi, White Leghorn, and Yarkon laid the most eggs per hen per year being 119, 120, and 129 eggs, respectively. The crossbreed between Dominant Red Barred, and Horro ecotype aged 41-44 weeks laid eggs weighing 56.3 g. The management practices affected age at first egg with the smallholder production system tending to delay it and reduced the eggs per hen per year and average egg weight. The age at first egg-lay for Bovans Brown breed ranged from 165.6 to 196.2 days under this system. Potchefstroom Koekoek chicken breed reared under this system laid 130.5 to 187.0 eggs per hen per year. When additional feed was provided, Bovans Brown chicken breed increased their egg production from 133.5 to 235.9 eggs per hen per year. The average egg weight was 43.0, 52.1, and 52.5 g for Fayoumi, White Leghorn, and Rhode Island Red chicken, repectivelly, under this system in northern Ethiopia. Most chicken breeds were reared under inadequate management practices resulting in suboptimal performance. Crossbreeding exotic and indigenous chicken breeds and intensifying the management will improve performance. The existence of suitable market demand for chicken products, readily available commercial feeds, and government and private investor involvement are emerging opportunities for enhanced chicken performance in Ethiopia.

Smallholder cattle farmers’ perceptions, adoption potential, and utilization of trees and shrubs as livestock feeds in the Eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo

ABSTRACTThe sustainability of the livestock sector is negatively affected by insufficient quality and quantity of feeds. The effects of population growth and climate change further exacerbate the availability of feeds. Therefore, developing feasible low-cost strategies to improve year-round feed availability for enhanced livestock production is necessary. The use of trees and shrubs fodder has been recommended as a potential strategy to address feed scarcity. This study evaluated the perceptions, adoption potential, and utilization of trees and shrubs as livestock feeds in the Eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) by employing a survey of 805 randomly sampled cattle farmers. The findings revealed that farmers utilized about 62 trees and shrubs for animal fodder. The farmers employed experience-based perceptions to evaluate the suitability of trees and shrubs for fodder based on animal and tree-related criteria. A probit model analysis results indicated that the utilization of trees and shrubs as livestock feeds were influenced by several household demographic factors, livestock farms, farming system factors, and institutional characteristics. The findings provide relevant insights into informing policy formulation and implementation that promote tree and shrub fodder utilization for improved livestock production under smallholder production systems.

Comparative carbon footprints of buffalo milk produced at smallholder and organised farms in Hisar district of Haryana, India

The present study was conducted to compare the carbon footprint of milk produced in 75 smallholder farms and two organised buffalo farms in Hisar district of Haryana using Life Cycle Assessment approach. Primary data was collected from farmers and farm managers for the study. Functional unit was one litre of milk with system boundary being ‘Cradle-to-farm gate’. Methodology prescribed by Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change was used for estimation of emissions from different sources. Secondary data was also relied upon for synthetic fertilizers and seeds, combustion of fossil fuel, production of concentrates and dry fodders. The average carbon footprint of milk produced in rural smallholder and organised farms were 3.54 and 4.53 kg CO₂-eq./L milk, respectively, indicating superiority of village level production systems. Methane from enteric fermentation was estimated to be contributing nearly half of the total greenhouse gas emissions. It is suggested that rural smallholder production systems should be favoured over organised ones given the lower greenhouse gas emissions.

Study on incidence of lamb morbidity and mortality and associated risk factors in the mixed crop-livestock production system of Gewata District, Kaffa zone, southwestern Ethiopia

Lamb morbidity and mortality cause significant loss in a smallholder production system. A longitudinal prospective survey was conducted on 408 randomly selected farmers located in six purposefully selected kebeles in Gewata woreda from June 2020 to July 2021 to determine the incidence of morbidity and mortality in lambs and to identify risk factors. For this purpose, 408 lambs from the Gewata district’s mixed crop-livestock production system were examined every day from birth to three months of age. The data was analyzed using the Kaplan-Meier (K-M) method, the log-rank test, and Cox proportional hazards regression. Results showed that the cumulative incidence of all-cause of morbidity and mortality at the end of three month was 12.86% (95% CI: 10.26–16.13%), and 6.86% (95% CI: 5.03–9.35%), respectively. Diarrhea was the leading cause of morbidity and mortality, accounting for 49.33 and 50% morbidity and mortality, respectively. Pneumonia was the second most frequent cause of morbidity and death. In the K-M hazard analysis, the greatest risk of lamb morbidity and mortality was observed during the first month of life, and then the risk decreased significantly as the lamb grew. Of the 17 potential risk factors studied, the multivariable Cox proportional hazards regression model showed that lamb sex, birth weight, umbilical care, time and method of colostrum feeding were the five predictors that were significantly associated with a higher risk of morbidity, whereas birth weight, lambing difficulty, dams’ parity, method and time of colostrum feeding were the five predictors that were significantly associated with a higher risk of mortality. Moreover, a higher risk of morbidity was observed in lambs with methods of colostrum feeding after birth (HR = 3.158; p = 0.000) and with variations in birth weight (HR = 1.418; p = 0.003). Similarly, the mortality risk was 4.926 (p = 0.047), 4.023 (p = 0.012), and 3.206 (p = 0.000) times higher in lambs with lambing difficulties, at the time of colostrum feeding, and by the method of colostrum feeding, respectively. According to this research, lamb morbidity and mortality rates in the study area are significantly high which has a great impact on the replacement stock and production. Hence, awareness should be created among farmers concerning improved lamb management practices.

Performance of crossbred pigs with indigenous and Hampshire inheritance under a smallholder production system in the Eastern Himalayan hill region.

Pig productivity is very low in the Eastern Himalayan hill region due to the poor performance of local pigs. To improve pig productivity, it was decided to develop a crossbred pig of Niang Megha indigenous and Hampshire as an exotic germplasm. The performance of crossbred pigs with different levels of Hampshire and indigenous inheritance-H-50 × NM-50 (HN-50), H-75 × NM-25 (HN-75), and H-87.5 × NM-12.5 (HN-87.5)-was compared for their performance to find a suitable level of genetic inheritance. Among the crossbreds, HN-75 performed better in terms of production, reproduction performance, and adaptability. Inter se mating and selection were carried out on six generations of HN-75 pigs, and genetic gain and trait stability were evaluated and released as a crossbred. These crossbred pigs attained body weights of 77.5-90.7kg by 10months of age, with FCR of 4.3:1. Age at puberty was 276.66 ± 2.25days, and average birth weight was 0.92 ± 0.06kg. Litter size at birth and weaning were 9.12 ± 0.55 and 8.52 ± 0.81. These pigs have good mothering abilities with a weaning percentage of 89.32 ± 2.52%, good carcass quality, and consumer preference. The lifetime productivity for an average of six farrowings/sow showed a total litter size at birth of 51.83 ± 1.61 and total litter size at weaning of 47.17 ± 2.69. In a smallholder production system, the crossbred pigs showed a better growth rate and a higher litter size at birth and at weaning than average local pigs. Hence, the popularization of this crossbreed would enhance the production, productivity, livelihood, and income of the region's farmers.

Effect of artificial insemination in comparison to natural mating on the reproductive performance and profitability of smallholder pig production system in Indian Himalaya

In fragile ecosystems, smallholder pig production systems provide food and nutritional security to resource-poor communities. Pigs are the main livestock raised by indigenous communities in the Himalayan region of India, but their productivity is low for several reasons. The present study aimed to study the pig herd size and to evaluate the impact of artificial insemination (AI) on profitability and sustainability in the small-holder pig production system. A total of 612 AIs were carried out in 483 sows in the farmer's field along with 114 sows that underwent natural breeding. A comparison was made between the reproductive performance of sows following AI and natural breeding. The profitability and economics of AI and natural breeding were also compared. The mean pig population varied from 4.75 to 6.42 in the study region. The farrowing rate, total born piglets (TBPs), and live born piglets (LBPs) were significantly higher (P&amp;lt; 0.001) in artificially inseminated sows compared to naturally bred sows (9.37 vs. 6.28; 8.93 vs. 5.45). Farrowing rate (P= 0.005), TBP, and LBP were significantly (P&amp;lt; 0.001) higher in sows inseminated by female inseminator as compared to male inseminator (81.26 vs. 71.42%; 9.65 vs. 8.80; 9.21 vs. 8.38). The insemination by uneducated farmers resulted in significantly (P= 0.002) lower farrowing rate, TBP (P&amp;lt; 0.001), LBP (P&amp;lt; 0.001), and AI per farrowing (P= 0.042). The farmers who did AI for the third time and more than three times recorded significantly (P&amp;lt; 0.001) higher farrowing rates, TBP, and LBP. The farrowing rate was significantly (P&amp;lt; 0.001) less in sows that were located more than 30 km away from the semen center (66.66 vs. 82.90%). The net return per sow was significantly higher (P&amp;lt; 0.001) in artificially inseminated sows (US$464.8 vs. US$248.11). AI resulted in an 87.33% increase in net returns per farrowing as compared to natural breeding. In conclusion, AI in smallholder pig production systems has the potential to sustainably improve the profitability as well as the food and nutritional security of resource-poor farmers.

Microplastics (MPs) accumulation in farmland has attracted global concern. Smallholder farming is the dominant type in China's agriculture. Compared with large-scale farming, smallholder farming is not constrained by restrictive environmental policies and public awareness about pollution. Consequently, the degree to which smallholder farming is associated with MP pollution in soils is largely unknown. Here, we collected soil samples from both smallholder and large-scale vegetable production systems to determine the distribution and characteristics of MPs. MP abundance in vegetable soils was 147.2–2040.4 MP kg−1 (averaged with 500.8 MP kg−1). Soil MP abundance under smallholder cultivation (730.9 MP kg−1) was twice that found under large-scale cultivation (370.7 MP kg−1). MP particle sizes in smallholder and large-scale farming were similar, and were mainly <1 mm. There were also differences in MP characteristics between the two types of vegetable soils: fragments (60%) and fibers (34%) were dominant under smallholder cultivation, while fragments (42%), fibers (42%), and films (11%) were dominant under large-scale cultivation. We observed a significant difference in the abundance of fragments and films under smallholder versus large-scale cultivation; the main components of MPs under smallholder cultivation were PP (34%), PE (28%), and PE-PP (10%), while these were PE (29%), PP (16%), PET (16%), and PE-PP (13%) under large-scale cultivation. By identifying the shape and composition of microplastics, it can be inferred that agricultural films were not the main MP pollution source in vegetable soil. We show that smallholder farming produces more microplastics pollution than large-scale farming in vegetable soil.

Seroprevalence and risk factors of tropical theileriosis in smallholder asymptomatic large ruminants in Egypt.

Knowledge of the prevalence and epidemiological determinants of tropical theileriosis in large ruminants, particularly in the asymptomatic carrier, is crucial for designing and implementing effective host-specific control measures. This study aimed to estimate the seroprevalence of tropical theileriosis in asymptomatic cattle and water buffaloes and identify the potential risk factors of theileriosis in large ruminants raised under smallholder-production system in Egypt. A cross-sectional study was conducted in five districts of the Sharkia governorate from March 2019 to February 2020. In total, 350 serum samples were collected from cattle and water buffaloes under smallholder-production system and tested for Theileria annulata antibodies using the indirect antibody fluorescence test (IFAT). Data on species, host characteristics, presence of ticks, season, and districts were collected at sampling using a questionnaire. A multivariable mixed-effects logistic regression model was built to determine the potential risk factors associated with T. annulate seropositivity of the animals. The overall apparent seroprevalence of T. annulata in 350 tested animals was 70%. In the univariable analyses, cattle compared to buffaloes, younger animals compared to older ones, animals with ticks on their bodies, and warmer seasons were all associated with a higher likelihood of seropositive results in the study population while sex of the animals was not associated with seropositivity. The final multivariable model showed that animals with ticks on their bodies had 3.5× higher odds of seropositivity than those with no ticks (P < 0.001), and warmer seasons were associated with the higher odds of infection compared to winter (P = 0.003). The high seroprevalence of tropical theileriosis in the study region indicates that the disease is endemic among smallholders of large ruminants. The identified risk factors of T. annulata-seropositivity in asymptomatic carrier animals provides evidence-based guidance for adopting effective intervention measures.

DAIRY CATTLE REPRODUCTIVE PERFORMANCE UNDER DIFFERENT PRODUCTION SYSTEM IN ETHIOPIA: NIGERIA’S BILATERAL TRADE RELATIONS WITH CHINA: AN ASSESSMENT, 2010 – 2019

Reproductive performance of dairy cattle in terms of age at first service (AFS), age at first calving (AFC), calving interval (CI), day open (DO), and a number of service preconceptions (NSPC) in the different production system in Ethiopia is reviewed. The reproductive performance parameter of dairy cattle like age at first serves (AFS), age at first calving (AFC), calving interval (CI), Day opens (DO), and the number of service preconceptions (NSPC) under different production system is quite different. Age at first calving (AFC) in pastoral and agro-pastoral and intensive dairy production systems were 43.5±1.5months and 33.2 months, respectively. Days open (DO) in pastoral and agro-pastoral, smallholder dairy production, and urban and dairy products for local cows were 141±7 days, 185±51.2days, and 199.8±11.60 days, respectively. 85 to 115days considered as optimum for a dairy herd, 116 to 130 days indicate slight problems, 131 to 145 days moderate problems. This, indicated that days open in the different production system is not within the normal range. Similarly, for cross dairy cows in an intensive dairy production system was157.8 days. The calving interval (CI) in pastoral and agro-pastoral, smallholder dairy production systems, urban and pre-urban for local cows were 14.63±10 months, 14.36± 1.03 months, and 22.17±0.79 months, respectively. Whereas urban and pre-urban and intensive dairy production for cross dairy cows were12.42±5.9 months, 15.820±.41months, and 14.56 months, respectively. NSPC for Horro x Jersey (1.8) and Horror (2.1) are not within the normal range, But for Borana (1.6), Fogera (1.28), Friesian x Zebu (1.56) were within the normal range. This difference might be due to poor management in terms of nutrition, health care, housing, heat detection, timely insemination, and breeding as well as environmental factors. It could be concluded that proper management in terms of nutrition, health care, housing, heat detection, and timely insemination would improve reproductive performance under different production systems. Besides this, to boost dairy cattle reproductive performance, intensification of dairy cattle production should be promoted in Ethiopia to meet the increasing demand for dairy products and to reduce imports of dairy commodities. Thus, all coordinated works of all concerned bodies should be in place to boost production and productivity and thereby enhance the livelihood of the dairy farmers.

Current Knowledge on the Lagune Cattle Breed in Benin: A State of the Art Review

This paper summarizes the information on the Lagune cattle breed and its production systems in Benin available in peer-reviewed journals, conference papers and research reports covering the period from 1970 to 2020. Lagune cattle are kept in two production systems in Benin: the improved ranching system established at the Governmental farm of Samiondji, where most of the published studies on this breed have been achieved, and the village traditional production system. This breed has a small size with short horns. Reported adult weight varied from 140 to 180 kg for male and from 100 to 140 kg for female. Lagune cows are bad dairy. The breed plays an important role in the livelihoods of the rural people and has many functions, including cultural, ecological, socio-economic, savings and income provision roles. Most of the reports emphasizes its low productivity, which might rather be more related to its poor management conditions than to its genetic potential. The Lagune breed is reported to have adaptive traits such as tolerance to drought and heat, and resistance to ticks and diseases. In 1975, the Government of Benin, having realized the risk of the disappearance of this breed, devoted the Samiondji Farm to its ex situ conservation and set up a purebred multiplication herd. Since then, there have been very few efforts to comprehensively characterize this breed and its productivity under smallholder production systems. Consequently, the opportunities for its in situ conservation, management and sustainable use by the rural communities are not sufficiently explored.

Farmers’ Perception on the Welfare of Broiler Chickens in Smallholder Production Systems in Kiambu County, Kenya

In Kenya, commercial broiler production is growing rapidly due to increasing demand for poultry meat resulting in higher incomes for farmers. Due to this increase in demand, broiler chicken production is increasingly becoming intensive where chickens are overstocked in deep litter systems subjecting the birds to suffering perpetuated through burns on their shanks and breasts with constant footpad lesions, thus compromising their welfare. This study was conducted to determine the farmers’ attitudes towards the welfare of broiler chickens in smallholder production systems in Kiambu County, Kenya. A total of 120 farmers were randomly chosen for the study consisting of 42 and 78 respondents from Kikuyu and Kabete subcounties, respectively. A semistructured questionnaire was used to interview the farmers on their knowledge, attitudes, and practices in regard to broiler welfare. The results of this study indicated that most farmers (74%) in Kikuyu and Kabete subcounties had knowledge about broiler welfare. Media, hatcheries, agrovet centres, and extension agents were the main sources of information on broiler welfare to farmers at 61%, 40%, 38.8%, and 31.5% respectively. Farmers perceived that good feeding (88%), good health (83%), suitable housing (82%), and appropriate behaviour (48%) were very important indicators of broiler chicken welfare. Gumboro (infectious bursal disease) and new castle disease (NCD) were prevented through vaccination by most farmers (91%), while coccidiosis was controlled through cleaning and disinfection of broiler sheds and equipment as well as treatment of sick birds with coccidiostat. In conclusion, farmers’ perception on broiler welfare has a bearing on the performance of broiler chickens.

Breeding of African sheep reared under low-input/output smallholder production systems for trypanotolerance.

Trypanosomiasis is a disease caused by unicellular protozoan parasites. Small ruminants succumb to trypanosomiasis in areas of high tsetse fly challenge, resulting in serious economic loss often to farmers in low-input smallholder systems. At present, trypanosomiasis is treated with trypanocidal drugs, but access to these can be limited, and increasing parasite resistance raises questions about their efficacy. The development of trypanotolerance in small ruminant flocks through targeted breeding strategies is considered a sustainable and economical option for controlling African trypanosomiasis. Recently, quantitative trait loci (QTLs) associated with trypanotolerance traits in sheep have been reported. The results of these studies form the basis for more studies to identify QTLs associated with trypanosomiasis resistance, particularly in African livestock species. For example, signatures of positive selection for trypanotolerance have been identified using genome-wide single-nucleotide polymorphism data. However, there are several challenges in performing genetic analyses using data from low-input smallholder systems, including a lack of recorded pedigree and production records and the need for large sample sizes when flock sizes are often fewer than 50 animals. Breeding strategies to improve trypanotolerance should also preserve existing genetic diversity as well as minimize excessive genetic introgression by trypanosusceptible breeds. This review discusses the possibilities of breeding for trypanosome tolerance/resistance in low-input/low-output small ruminant production systems. Potential challenges are outlined, and potential available genetic resources are described as a foundation for future work.
