Application of Kaizen Principles to a Small Scale Industry in India

This case-study presents the application of Kaizen concept to Chempromech Engineers Pvt. Ltd. in Butribori, Maharashtra, India. The work carried out focuses on Kaizen approach to the Plant Layout of the industry to make it more efficient and desirable to work in as well as gives a formula to the industry to calculate its production in kg/hr theoretically. Chempromech Engineers Pvt. Ltd. Is a small scale industry present in the Butibori MIDC area in Nagpur, Maharashtra which specializes in manufacturing of circlip washer wires and washers. Being a small-scale industry, it is faced with problems pertaining to limited workspace, so a new layout is designed which helps groups machines based in their product type and thus freeing out space for future expansion. Product Based Plant Layout is preferred for this industry as its products vary in size and weight. Key words:- Kaizen, Plant Layout, Product Based Plant Layout, Washers and Washer wire.

A Comprehensive Analysis of Financing Challenges and Strategies for Small-Scale Industries

Abstract: Small-scale industries (SSIs) constitute a vital sector in India's economic landscape, contributing significantly to employment and fostering entrepreneurship. However, SSIs face persistent challenges in accessing adequate financing, impacting their growth potential. This research investigates the financing landscape of SSIs in India, specifically focusing on Lucknow as a case study. Through a mixed-methods approach involving surveys and interviews, the study explores the challenges faced by SSIs, evaluates various financing mechanisms, and assesses the impact of government policies. Findings highlight high-interest rates, collateral requirements, and financial literacy as major challenges. Bank loans dominate as a financing source, while microfinance and government schemes play substantial roles. The Prime Minister's Employment Generation Programme receives positive feedback. The study contributes valuable insights to policymakers and stakeholders working towards enhancing financial inclusion for SSIs.

A Study on Challenges of Small-Scale Industries in India

A form of art that demonstrates skills of artisans in the form of metal and pottery can be termed as ‘craftwork’. Also referred to as crafts, it could also include work that can be done on flower, paper, leather, fiber to name a few. In a developing country like India, this finds its presence as a Small Sector Industry (SSI herewith). In the last seven and a half decades of independence, this sector has seen its share of ups and downs and managed to weather many challenges. Two most challenging areas has always been the rise in population and consequently unemployment. The purpose of this article is to provide readers with a better understanding of the SSI industry by outlining its features, difficulties, and possibilities for development and improvement. We believe that stakeholders, legislators, and entrepreneurs will find our work useful in their pursuit of launching and growing successful businesses in the modern day.

The Importance of Green Management and its Implication in Creating Sustainability Performance on the Small-Scale Industries in India

Objective: This paper examines how stakeholder demand, organisational resources, knowledge, environmental uncertainty management, and product uniqueness affect green marketing and India's small-scale industry's sustainability. The study is important in green management because it examines concurrent relationships between stakeholders' demand, organisations' resources, knowledge, environmental uncertainty management, product uniqueness, and sustainability performance. Sustainability performance variables measure financial and non-financial performance in this study. Method: This study will quantitatively explain the phenomenon using numerical data and linear equation methods. Madhya Pradesh, with 7.54 percent of India's SSIs, hosted the study. Madhya Pradesh's forest-based industry and environmentally friendly development made these sites ideal. Researchers chose large cities since SSIs were more prevalent there in prior years. Bhopal, Jabalpur, and Gwalior will contribute data. Result: Green management affects SSIs' sustainability performance due to stakeholder demand, knowledge, environmental uncertainty management, and product uniqueness, but not organisational resources. Conclusion: Stakeholder demand, organisation resources, expertise, managing environmental uncertainty, and product uniqueness affect green management and SSI's sustainability performance. Green management boosts SSI's sustainability.

Financing of Small-Scale Industries in India: A Survey of Literature

Abstract: MSMEs are essential for India's economy, providing job opportunities, industrial production, exports, and regional development. They have been instrumental in promoting exports from India and have a significant impact on regional development. However, they face challenges such as limited access to finance, lack of infrastructure, technological constraints, and regulatory complexities. To maximize their potential contribution, it is important to address these challenges and provide a favorable environment for their growth. The purpose of the study was to review the financial problems faced by small-scale industries (SSIs) in India and investigate alternative financing options such as nonbank financial institutions. The conclusions emphasize the importance of addressing the financial constraints faced by SSIs in order to support their growth and development, and call for the intervention of state and central governments.

Identifying the Factors of Public Relations Activities & its Impact on the Growth of SSIS in India

Purpose of Research: This study intends to investigate the numerous factors that influence the public relations drivers in the operations of small-scale industries in India, as well as the effect of PR activities on the growth variables of SSIs. Theoretical framework: Yet India's small-scale manufacturers struggle with large-scale selling and marketing activities. SSIs cannot afford expensive advertising and adequate distribution of goods, therefore PR can be cheaper and more effective (Adrian, Jamilah, & Ahmad, 2015). SSI owners must focus online as lifestyles and shopping patterns change (Widiastini et al., 2023) Promoting the industry and its products, creating relationships with key actors, and regulating communication might assist overcome these hurdles. A good PR can assist SSI in competing with larger companies (Thirumal, 2013). PR factors and Indian SSI growth must be examined. Design/ Methodology/ Approach: The quantitative study used primary and secondary data to gather all relevant data. Standardised questionnaires and interviews will capture primary data. Madhya Pradesh SSI owners and founders will represent. Examine 500 people with cluster sampling Technique. Findings: As a Result, identity media, publications, events, the internet, sponsorship, and public service activities are all significant determinants of SSI expansion in India. Researchers examined the global effect of public relations initiatives (except identity media) on the expansion of SSI in India (Special reference to Madhya Pradesh. Research, Practical & Social Implications: Future research, SSIs, and India are affected by the study on public relations and SSIs. Other factors affecting public relations success can be studied and assessment tools developed. SSIs should invest in PR, stakeholder relations, and strategy to grow. Originality/Value: This study's novelty and significance reside in its understanding of the aspects that affect public relations' promotion of India's small-scale industries (SSIs). By identifying public relations success criteria, this study helps SSIs improve brand image, visibility, and customer acquisition. This study's SSI implications can assist India's small business sector grow, providing jobs, economic activity, and better living conditions.

A critical study on the implementation of operation, control and maintenance techniques for flexible manufacturing systems in small scale industries

Small industries have a lot of roles in the Indian economy and the strength of their product lies in their competitiveness in the whole world market. In spite of this highly progress rate, the huge potential in Indian small-scale industries (SSI) has not been tapped. Hence, there is the requirement to improve these industries, so that they can bloom to their fullest. To achieve the increased competitiveness, the manufacturing in SSI need to change or supplement its previous methods of production with more flexible and dynamic production systems, such as flexible manufacturing system (FMS) which is characterized by shorter product development and manufacturing lead time, Best quality and flexibility, team-based work union, short setup/change with time, as a construction strategy and multi-functional labor. FMS can help SSI to improve its process and align it to the requirements of its customers. Therefore, a discussion on the issues of SSI and presents the key features for the confirmation of FMS in SSI. Despite the fact that the efficiency was minimal, the equipment provided for the production were competent and excellent for delivering and gathering the pieces of joint. The reason for this was the machine's idle season, the growth of under creation portion (work in process stock) is high due to the lack of adequate design and unbalancing line circumstances, and finally the association of direct work on the floor. As a result, the creation was adequate, but the efficiency was low. All of these elements necessitated the development of a feasible framework in order to maximise efficiency while minimising lead time. The Adaptable Assembling Framework is then familiar with achieving success on uncontrolled bounds. To control, we used a closed consecutive circle type FMS. In a perfect world, efficiency would be maximised.

Supplier Selection Using TOPSIS in Door and Window Industry

The concept of small scale industries in India showed a confusion and lack of clarity before independence. This sector was exclusively meant for village based and / tiny or cottage industry in urban areas, manufacturing handicrafts. “In the Industrial Policy Resolution 1948 and the document of the First Five year Plan, the only criterion to define small scale was their non-registration under the Factory Act. Later on, during the First Five Year Plan the distinction between SSI and village industry was made. From then on, capital, employment and use of power criteria were adopted. A Study on Effect of Employee’s Family Atmosphere and their Financial Position on Productivity in Indian Small Scale Manufacturing Industries.

Abstract: This paper examined the impact of employee’s family atmosphere and their financial position on productivity in small scale industries (SSI). The extensive literature review revealed that the study of impact of employee’s family atmosphere on Productivity in Indian Small Scale Industries (SSIs) has been less addressed and hence this study. A research survey instrument was designed ,tested for reliability and responses were collected with a convenient random sample of 383 employees of Indian small scale manufacturing industries. The instrument was tested for reliability with an acceptable Cronbach’s alpha of 86%. The analysis and results of the study revealed that, the employee’s family atmosphere, physical and mental health affects the productivity to a high level. The employees with higher educational qualification than the required qualification and the number of employee’s dependents does not affect the productivity.

A Conceptual Study on Performance of Small-Scale Industries in India

Purpose: Small-Scale Industries (SSI) are critical to economic development, particularly in developing countries. SSI provide nearly forty percent of the gross industrial value added to the Indian economy. It is interesting to know the performance and status of small-scale industries by using data from the Ministry of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSME) and analysing the SSI's strengths, weaknesses, threats, and opportunities. Objective: This research aims to analyse the scheme introduced by the Government to improve the SSI output. Methodology: For the study, we considered various articles, websites and tabular presentations. Result: According to the study, government schemes and policies contribute to promoting SSI growth in India. SSI provides a more significant contribution to the country's export, and it creates more employment opportunities for youth. Originality/value: The study determined the efficiency of small-scale industries in terms of unit establishment, production, job creation and export and also learned about some special government facilities provided through various schemes and programmes to address issues or problems and promote SSI's growth and development. The Role of Small-Scale Industries in Achieving the Sustainable Development: the Experience of India

The article deals with the role of small scale industry in India in achieving the sustainable development. The author draws attention to the fact that the small scale industry promotion policy impacts significantly not only on decreasing the unemployment rate as well as long-term and youth unemployment but also on solving such acute social problems as poverty, famine, undernourishment and food insecurity, lack of quality education, gender inequality and the empowerment of women. The author pays attention to the evolution of small business in India in 1950-2010s. It argues convincingly that due to significant number of population as well as low-skilled labor on the one hand and limited financial resources on the other one small business has been considered to be a buffer between modern big business and the bulk of the population remaining outside it. The author considers the effectiveness of the industrial policy through the prism of stimulating small-scale industry and changing its place in the Indian economy. The author examines the activity of the The National Bank for Agricultural and Rural Development (NABARD) which is considered to be the most important institution which looks after the development of the small scale industries. The aim of NABARD was poverty reduction and development assistance (it’s one of the premier agencies providing developmental credit in rural areas). The article presents the definition of small scale industry in India both in terms of employment level and the investment limits as well as statistical data on number of units, its share in industrial production and exports and expansion of small scale sector in 2000-2010s. The author identified main problems facing cottage and small scale industries in India at the present time. The research is based on the systematic approach to the study of national economy using basic methods of scientific knowledge such as induction and deduction, analysis and synthesis.

Effects of Awkward Posture on Work-Related Musculoskeletal Disorders (WMSDs) among Sawmill Workers in India

Background: The sawmill or lumber mill industry is mainly known as important small-scale industries in India, where thousands of sawmillers suffered from musculoskeletal pain and other health-related problems. The primary aim of the current study is to find out the subjective assessment of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) and occupational related health disorders among sawmill workers in India. Materials and Methods: The current descriptive study was direct on 135 sawmillers and 130 control subjects from different region of the Hooghly district, in India. To this end, the Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire (NMQ) was administered to estimate the subjective discomfort feeling and Handgrip Strength were also measured to estimate the power of the hand muscle among the sawmillers and compare with control groups. Posture adopted frequently during working of the sawmillers were also analyzed by the Ovako Working Analysis System (OWAS). Results: The data indicated that the sawmill workers complained of discomfort (pain) felt maximum in low back part of the body (91) followed by hands (80), shoulders (76), knees (64), and the upper back (58). This study indicated that the sawmillers had less handgrip strength than the control subjects due to performing more hand intensive jobs. Conclusions: The results of current study indicate that the sawmill workers suffered from MSD due to working in a stooped, squatting posture for a long duration, which adversely affected their health.

Evaluation for sustainability of machining processes in Indian small scale industries

Abstract Machining industries form a major part of small and mediocre scale industries in India. Also, the wastes generated and the resources consumed by these industries are quite significant. Due to the expansion of industries in recent years, there has been an adverse impact on the environment. Renewable resources are getting exhausted at a rate which is greater than the rate of their regeneration, and wastes are being produced at a rate which is far higher than the rate at which current waste management techniques work. In this context, sustainability for a machining industry has become a necessity, rather than just a choice. This work aims at studying some of the existing practices in small-scale Indian machining industries, and comparing the various available alternatives. Critical parameters for sustainability like spindle power, average time period of operation of the machine (hours), amount of waste produced (kg), cost of raw material, cost of tooling, cost of maintenance and cost of waste management were simultaneously considered. The available alternatives were compared using various Multi-Attribute Decision Making (MADM) methods like TOPSIS and AHP. In addition to this, this paper intends to introduce some sustainability solutions with the perspective of cost minimization. The solutions in this work are suggested while considering society, environment and economy simultaneously. This paper suggests the appropriate ways to communicate the obtained results to the decision makers of small-scale industries.
