Regulatory role of phosphoproteins in the development of bovine small intestine during early life.

The small intestine is the primary site of nutrient digestion and absorption, which plays a key role in the survival of neonatal calves. A comprehensive assessment of the phosphoproteomic changes in the small intestine of neonatal calves is unavailable; therefore, we used phosphopeptide enrichment coupled with liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry to investigate the changes in the phosphoproteome profile in the bovine small intestine during the first 36 h of life. Twelve neonatal male calves were assigned to one of the following groups: (1) calves not fed colostrum and slaughtered approximately 2 h postpartum (n = 3), (2) calves fed colostrum at 1 to 2 h and slaughtered 8 h postpartum (n = 3), (3) calves fed 2 colostrum meals (at 1-2 and 10-12 h) and slaughtered 24 h postpartum (n = 3), (4) calves fed 3 colostrum meals (at 1-2, 10-12, and 22-24 h) and slaughtered 36 h postpartum (n = 3). Mid-duodenal, jejunal, and ileal samples of the calves were collected after slaughter. We identified 1,678 phosphoproteins with approximately 3,080 phosphosites, which were mainly Ser (89.9%), Thr (9.8%), and Tyr (0.3%) residues; they belonged to the prodirected (52.9%), basic (20.4%), acidic (16.6%), and Tyr-directed (1.7%) motif categories. The regional differentially expressed phosphoproteins included zonula occludens 2, sorting nexin 12, and protein kinase C, which are mainly associated with developmental processes, intracellular transport, vesicle-mediated transport, and immune system process. They are enriched in the endocytosis, tight junction, insulin signaling, and focal adhesion pathways. The temporal differentially expressed phosphoproteins included occludin, epsin 1, and bridging integrator 1, which were mainly associated with macromolecule metabolic process, cell adhesion, and growth. They were enriched in the spliceosomes, adherens junctions, and tight junctions. The observed changes in the phosphoproteins in the tissues of small intestine suggest the protein phosphorylation plays an important role in nutrient transport and immune response of calves during early life, which needs to be confirmed in a larger study.

Effects of colostrum feeding on the mRNA abundance of genes related to toll-like receptors, key antimicrobial defense molecules, and tight junctions in the small intestine of neonatal dairy calves

The objective of the present study was to elucidate the effect of feeding either colostrum or milk-based formula on the mRNA abundance of genes related to pathogen recognition [toll-like receptors (TLR1-10)], antimicrobial defense [β-defensin 1 (DEFB1) and peptidoglycan recognition protein 1 (PGLYRP1)], and tight junctions (claudin 1 = CLDN1, claudin 4 = CLDN4, and occludin = OCLN) in different sections of the small intestine of neonatal calves at d 4 of life. Holstein dairy calves were fed either colostrum (COL; n = 7) or milk-based formula (FOR; n = 7) with comparable nutrient composition but lower contents of several bioactives in the formula than in the respective colostrum group until d 4 of life. Following euthanasia on d 4 (2 h after feeding), tissue samples from the duodenum, jejunum (proximal, middle, and distal), and ileum were collected. The mRNA abundance of the target genes was quantified by quantitative PCR. The mRNA abundance of TLR1, TLR6, TLR9, and TLR10 were greater in COL than in FOR calves. However, the mRNA abundance of TLR2, TLR3, TLR4, TLR5, and TLR7 did not differ between groups. A group × gut region interaction was observed for the mRNA abundance of TLR8 with greater values in duodenum and proximal jejunum of COL than in FOR calves but in the more distal regions, in mid and distal jejunum, and ileum, this diet effect disappeared or was reversed. We observed greater mRNA abundance of TLR1 in the jejunum (middle and distal) and ileum, TLR2, TLR4, TLR6, and TLR9-10 in the distal jejunum and ileum, and of TLR3 in the distal jejunum, and TLR5, TLR7, and TLR8 in the ileum compared with the other gut regions. The mRNA abundance of PGLYRP1, DEFB1, and OCLN did not differ between groups. The mRNA abundance of CLDN1 was greater, but the CLDN4 mRNA tended to be lower in COL than in FOR calves. The mRNA abundance of PGLYRP1 was lower in the distal jejunum and DEFB1 mRNA in the middle jejunum compared with the other gut regions. The mRNA abundances of OCLN and CLDN4 were greater in the duodenum, and of CLDN1 in the middle and proximal jejunum compared with the other gut regions. Overall, the greater mRNA abundance of 5 different TLR, and CLDN1 in most intestinal sections of the COL calves may suggest that feeding colostrum improves immune responsiveness and epithelial barrier function in neonatal calves.

Influences of Maternal Conjugated Linoleic Acid and Essential Fatty Acid Supply During Late Pregnancy and Early Lactation on T and B Cell Subsets in Mesenteric Lymph Nodes and the Small Intestine of Neonatal Calves.

Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) isomers are known for their health-promoting effects in mammals and metabolic functions in dairy cows and are synthesized in the forestomach depending on essential fatty acid (EFA) intake. The current preliminary study investigated effects of a maternal fatty acid supplementation (MFAS) during late pregnancy and early lactation with coconut oil (CON, control), CLA (Lutalin®), or CLA + EFA (Lutalin® linseed oil; safflower oil) on plasma fatty acid composition and T and B cell subsets in mesenteric lymph nodes (MLN) and the small intestine of 5-day-old calves. MFAS of CLA + EFA increased α-linolenic, eicosapentaenoic, docosapentaenoic, and n-3 fatty acid proportions in calf plasma fat on days 1 and 5 after birth (P < 0.05). On day 5, CLA and CLA + EFA calves showed higher plasma fat trans-10, cis-12 CLA proportions, and CLA calves had higher plasma cis-9, trans-11 CLA proportions compared with CON calves (P < 0.1). MFAS of CLA tended to increase CD4+ T cell subsets in MLN and increased CD21+ B cell subsets in ileal lamina propria compared with CON but decreased CD2+ T cell subsets in jejunal lamina propria (P < 0.05). CLA + EFA decreased CD4+ T cell subsets in MLN compared with CLA (P < 0.05). MFAS of CLA seemed to affect the intestinal adaptive immune system of calves, but additional EFA supplementations reversed CLA effects. Possible direct CLA and EFA effects or whether changes in milk composition affected this immune modulation must be clarified in further studies.

Short communication: Effect of delaying the first colostrum feeding on small intestinal histomorphology and serum insulin-like growth factor-1 concentrations in neonatal male Holstein calves

The primary objective of this study was to determine the effect of delaying the first colostrum feeding on small intestinal histomorphology and serum insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) concentrations, and the secondary objective was to characterize the ultrastructure of the small intestine of neonatal calves at 51 h of life. Twenty-seven male Holstein calves were fed pooled, pasteurized colostrum (7.5% of birth body weight; 62 g of IgG/L) at 45 min (0H, n = 9), 6 h (6H, n = 9), or 12 h (12H, n = 9) after birth. At 12 h after their respective colostrum feeding, calves were fed milk replacer at 2.5% of birth body weight per meal and every 6 h thereafter. Blood samples were collected every 6 h using a jugular catheter and analyzed for serum IGF-1 concentrations using an automated solid-phase chemiluminescent immunoassay. At 51 h of life, calves were euthanized to facilitate collection of the duodenum, proximal and distal jejunum, and ileum. All segments of the small intestine were assessed for histomorphology, whereas scanning electron and transmission electron microscopy analyses were conducted only for the proximal jejunum and ileum. The results revealed that there was no overall effect of colostrum feeding time on serum IGF-1 concentrations; however, serum IGF-1 concentrations were influenced by time. Specifically, concentrations of serum IGF-1 at 48 h were 29% greater than concentrations at 0 h of life (312.8 ± 14.85 vs. 241.9 ± 14.06 ng/mL). Although there was no overall effect of colostrum feeding time on all histomorphological measures assessed, treatment × segment interactions were observed. Villi height was 1.4 times greater in the distal jejunum of 0H calves than in 6H and 12H calves, and 0H calves tended to have 1.2 times greater ileal villus height than 12H calves. In addition, 0H calves had 1.2 and 1.3 times greater ileal crypt depth than 6H and 12H calves, respectively, and 1.3 times greater surface area index than 12H calves in the distal jejunum. Qualitative ultrastructural evaluation of small intestinal enterocytes conducted irrespective of colostrum treatment revealed the presence of large vacuoles of electron-dense material, apical mitochondria, and apical canalicular systems in the jejunum and ileum. These results indicate that the calf intestine at 51 h of life contains unique enterocyte characteristics similar to fetal enterocytes and that delaying colostrum feeding may negatively influence intestinal growth and development.

Short communication: Colostrum versus formula: Effects on mRNA expression of genes related to branched-chain amino acid metabolism in neonatal dairy calves

The objective of the current study was to elucidate the effect of feeding colostrum or milk-based formula on the tissue mRNA abundance of the most relevant branched-chain amino acids (BCAA) transporters and catabolizing enzymes in newborn calves. German Holstein calves were fed either colostrum (COL; n = 7) or milk-based formula (FOR; n = 7) with comparable nutrient composition but lower contents of free BCAA, insulin, and insulin-like growth factor-I in the formula than in the respective colostrum for up to 4 d of life. Tissue samples from liver, kidney fat, 3 different muscles [M. longissimus dorsi (MLD), M. semitendinosus (MST), and M. masseter (MM)], as well as duodenum, jejunum, and ileum were collected following euthanasia on d 4 at 2 h after feeding. The plasma-free BCAA were analyzed, and the tissue abundance of solute carrier family 1 member 5 (SLC1A5), SLC7A5, and SLC38A2 as well as mitochondrial isoform of branched-chain aminotransferase (BCATm), branched-chain α-keto acid dehydrogenase E1α (BCKDHA), and branched-chain α-keto acid dehydrogenase E1β (BCKDHB) were assessed. The preprandial plasma concentrations of free BCAA were affected by time but did not differ between groups. The plasma concentrations of free BCAA decreased in COL, whereas they increased in FOR after feeding, resulting in higher postprandial plasma total BCAA concentrations in FOR than in COL. The mRNA abundances of BCATm, BCKDHA, BCKDHB, as well as BCAA transporters in the liver, were not affected by the diet. In kidney fat, the mRNA abundance of BCAA catabolizing enzymes did not differ between groups, but that of SLC1A5 was lower in FOR than in COL. The mRNA abundance of BCAA catabolizing enzymes in different sections of the small intestine was not affected by the diet, whereas that of SLC7A5 was or tended to be lower in the duodenum, proximal jejunum, and mid jejunum of the COL calves compared with the FOR calves. The mRNA abundance of BCKDHA was lower in MLD and MM but greater in MS for the FOR calves compared with the COL calves. The mRNA abundance of SLC7A5 in MST was lower in FOR than in COL, whereas it was unaffected by the diet in MLD and MM. The differential effect of feeding colostrum on the mRNA abundance of BCKDHA in 3 different muscle tissues might point to a muscle type-specific response. The results also indicate that the colostral BCAA might be favorably used for anabolic metabolism in the small intestine of neonatal calves. Such effects are speculated to be due to the stimulatory effects of growth factors and hormones present in colostrum.

Alterations of the circular RNA profile in the jejunum of neonatal calves in response to colostrum and milk feeding

Circular RNA (circRNA) have been suggested to contribute to regulating gene expression in various tissues and cells of eukaryotes. However, little is known regarding the expression pattern of circRNA and their potential function in the small intestine of neonatal calves that receive colostrum. In the current study, jejunum tissue samples were collected from control calves (2 h after birth; CT; n = 3) and neonatal calves that ingested colostrum (24 h after birth; CO; n = 3) or milk (24 h after birth; MK; n = 3) to compare the circRNA expression patterns using a high-throughput RNA sequencing approach. A total of 21,213, 17,861, and 21,737 circRNA were identified in the CT, CO, and MK groups, respectively. Only 13,254 of these circRNA were common to the 3 groups, suggesting high specificity of circRNA expression depending on nutrient type. In total, 243, 249, and 283 circRNA were differentially expressed in the CO versus CT, CO versus MK, and MK versus CT comparisons, respectively. Gene ontology analysis showed that the differentially expressed circRNA and their predicted or known target genes from the CO and MK groups were mainly involved in macromolecule metabolic process, response to stress, and vesicle-mediated transport. Moreover, pathway analysis showed that the Rap1 signaling pathway, focal adhesion, ubiquitin-mediated proteolysis, and extracellular matrix-receptor interaction were the most significantly enriched pathways. These data collectively indicate that circRNA are abundant and dynamically expressed when calves receive colostrum and act as microRNA sponges to regulate their target genes for jejunum function during the early development of newborn calves.

Changes in serum metabolites in response to ingested colostrum and milk in neonatal calves, measured by nuclear magnetic resonance-based metabolomics analysis

Uptake of colostrum is of central importance for establishing a passive immunity transfer in neonatal calves. Studies of absorption and transmission of colostral immunoglobulins have been widely reported; however, changes in the serum in response to the absorption of colostral components in neonatal calves have not been completely characterized. Here, a nuclear magnetic resonance-based metabolomics approach was used to investigate the changes in metabolites in ingested colostrum, milk, and serum after neonatal calves were fed colostrum or milk. Twenty-seven neonatal male Holstein calves were assigned to 1 of the following groups: (1) calves not fed colostrum or milk and slaughtered approximately 2 h after birth (control group, n = 6), (2) calves fed colostrum at 1 to 2 h after birth and slaughtered 8 h after birth (n = 6), (3) calves fed 2 colostrum meals (at 1-2 and 10-12 h after birth) and slaughtered 24 h after birth (n = 6), (4) calves fed 3 colostrum meals (at 1-2, 10-12, and 22-24 h after birth) and slaughtered 36 h after birth (n = 6), or (5) calves fed 2 milk meals (1-2 and 10-12 h after birth) and slaughtered 24 h after birth (n = 3). Concentrations of valine, leucine, lactate, lysine, and isoleucine were higher and concentrations of lactose were lower in the groups fed colostrum and milk compared with groups not fed colostrum and milk, respectively. Metabolite changes between groups fed or not fed colostrum and milk were similar and may reflect the primary metabolic requirements of ingestion by the small intestine of neonatal calves. Concentrations of serum metabolites choline, valine, leucine, and glutamate were higher in the serum of calves that received colostrum compared with control calves. Furthermore, concentrations of serum phenylalanine, valine, and glutamate were significantly higher, whereas serum concentrations of citrate and very low density lipoproteins were lower in calves that received colostrum compared with calves fed milk. Our results indicate that concentrations of leucine, valine, and glutamate, which were higher in the calves that ingested colostrum, may transfer into the bloodstream, and that these metabolites are associated with health benefits in the neonatal calves that received colostrum. These findings provide novel information to help us understand the mechanism by which colostrum components are metabolized and absorbed in the small intestine and then transferred into bloodstream of neonatal calves.

Transcriptome analysis reveals regional and temporal differences in mucosal immune system development in the small intestine of neonatal calves.

BackgroundPostnatal development of the mammalian mucosal immune system is crucial for responding to the rapid colonization by commensal bacteria and possible exposure to pathogens. This study analyzed expression patterns for mRNAs and their relationship with microRNAs (miRNAs) in the bovine small intestine during the critical neonatal period (0 to 42 days). This analysis revealed molecular mechanisms regulating the postnatal development of the intestinal mucosal immune system.ResultsSmall intestine samples (jejunum and ileum) were collected from newborn male, Holstein calves immediately post-partum (n = 3) and at 7 (n = 5), 21 (n = 5), and 42 (n = 5) days of age and the transcriptomes were profiled using RNA-Seq. When analyzing all time points collectively, greater expression of genes encoding the complement functional pathway, as well as lower expression of genes encoding Toll-like receptors and NOD-like receptors were observed in the jejunum when compared to the ileum. In addition, significant changes in the expression of immune-related genes were detected within the first week post-partum in both jejunum and ileum. For example, increased expression of genes encoding tight junction proteins (claudin 1, claudin 4 and occludin), an antimicrobial peptide (Regenerating Islet-Derived 3-γ), NOD-like receptors (NACHT, LRR and PYD domain-containing protein 3), regulatory T cell marker (forkhead box P3), and both anti-inflammatory (interleukin 10) and pro-inflammatory (interleukin 8) cytokines was observed throughout the small intestine of 7-day-old calves when compared to newborn calves. Moreover, the expression of mucosal immune-related genes were either positively or negatively correlated with total bacterial population depending on both intestinal region and age. The integrated analysis of miRNAs and mRNAs supported the conclusion that miRNAs may regulate temporal changes in the expression of genes encoding tight junction proteins (miR-335), cytokines (miR-335) and bacterial recognition (miR-100) during the first week of small intestine development.ConclusionThe rapid development of transcriptional differences between jejunum and ileum reveal that these two intestinal regions make distinct contributions to the intestinal mucosal immune system during the early neonatal period. In addition, transcriptome analysis indicates that the first week after birth is a very dynamic developmental period for the intestinal mucosal immune system and these changes may be regulated by both miRNAs and microbial colonization. Heat-treated colostrum feeding promotes beneficial bacteria colonization in the small intestine of neonatal calves

The present study investigated the effect of heat-treated colostrum feeding on the bacterial colonization in calf small intestine of neonatal calves within the first 12h of life. Newborn Holstein bull calves (n=32) were assigned to 3 treatment groups and fed with either fresh colostrum (FC, n=12) or heat-treated (60°C, 60min) colostrum (HC, n=12) soon after birth, whereas the control (NC, n=8) group did not receive colostrum or water. Small intestinal tissues and contents were collected from proximal jejunum, distal jejunum, and ileum at 6 and 12h after birth, following euthanasia. Quantitative real time-PCR was used to explore the colonization of total bacteria, Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium, and Escherichia coli. The feeding of colostrum soon after birth increased the colonization of total bacteria in calf gut within the first 12h compared with NC. In contrast, the prevalence of Lactobacillus was lower in HC and FC compared to NC. Remarkable changes in the prevalence of small intestinal tissue-attached Bifidobacterium were observed with the feeding of HC, but not that in small intestinal contents. The prevalence of Bifidobacterium was 3.2 and 5.2 fold higher in HC than FC and NC, respectively, at 6h. Although the feeding of FC did not enhance the prevalence of tissue-attached Bifidobacterium at 6h compared with NC, it displayed a gradual increase over the time that was higher than NC, but similar to that of HC at 12h. Moreover, the colonization of E. coli was drastically reduced in HC calves compared with FC and NC. Thus, the present study suggests that the feeding of HC enhances the colonization of Bifidobacterium but lessens E. coli in the calf small intestine immediately postpartum compared with that of FC and NC. The increased colonization of beneficial bacteria along with the decreased colonization of potential pathogens in calf gut may also diminish the neonatal calf diarrhea when calves are fed heat-treated colostrum soon after birth.

Diet effects on glucose absorption in the small intestine of neonatal calves: Importance of intestinal mucosal growth, lactase activity, and glucose transporters

Colostrum (C) feeding in neonatal calves improves glucose status and stimulates intestinal absorptive capacity, leading to greater glucose absorption when compared with milk-based formula feeding. In this study, diet effects on gut growth, lactase activity, and glucose transporters were investigated in several gut segments of the small intestine. Fourteen male German Holstein calves received either C of milkings 1, 3, and 5 (d 1, 2, and 3 in milk) or respective formulas (F) twice daily from d 1 to d 3 after birth. Nutrient content, and especially lactose content, of C and respective F were the same. On d 4, calves were fed C of milking 5 or respective F and calves were slaughtered 2h after feeding. Tissue samples from duodenum and proximal, mid-, and distal jejunum were taken to measure villus size and crypt depth, mucosa and brush border membrane vesicles (BBMV) were taken to determine protein content, and mRNA expression and activity of lactase and mRNA expression of sodium-dependent glucose co-transporter-1 (SGLT1) and facilitative glucose transporter (GLUT2) were determined from mucosal tissue. Additionally, protein expression of SGLT1 in BBMV and GLUT2 in crude mucosal membranes and BBMV were determined, as well as immunochemically localized GLUT2 in the intestinal mucosa. Villus circumference, area, and height were greater, whereas crypt depth was smaller in C than in F. Lactase activity tended to be greater in C than in F. Protein expression of SGLT1 was greater in F than in C. Parameters of villus size, lactase activity, SGLT1 protein expression, as well as apical and basolateral GLUT2 localization in the enterocytes differed among gut segments. In conclusion, C feeding, when compared with F feeding, enhances glucose absorption in neonatal calves primarily by stimulating mucosal growth and increasing absorptive capacity in the small intestine, but not by stimulating abundance of intestinal glucose transporters.

Observations on the ultrastructural appearance of endocrine cells of the small intestine of the calf.

AbstractThe endocrine cells of the small intestine of neonatal calves are described, with the aid of transmission and scanning electron microscopy. It is demonstrated that endocrine cells have long microvilli, and are organized into two populations, similar to those of other species.

Ultrastructural changes in the small intestine of neonatal calves with enteric colibacillosis.

The small intestines of calves inoculated orally with the enteropathogenic strain of Escherichia coli 0101:K'B41',K99 were examined by electron microscopy at 3, 6, 12, 16, 21, 36, 69, 70 and 72 hours after inoculation. The challenge organism adhered to the mucosa of the distal small intestine from six hours post-inoculation. Bacteria were separated from the microvillous brush border by a gap of 200 to 300 nm in which bacterial fimbriae and the microvillous glycocalyx were seen. Bacteria never were found in epithelial cells but were present in macrophages in the lamina propria from 12 hours. At three and six hours, cytopathic changes were not seen in the small intestine, but from 12 hours epithelial cells on affected villi had blunt and thick microvilli and contained cytoplasmic inclusions. Epithelial cells were seen frequently in the process of extrusion from the villi, either singly, in small groups, or as ribbons of cells. Intervillous bridges, characteristic of villous fusion, were seen frequently from 69 hours.

Distributional Uptake of γ-Globulin in Small Intestine of Neonatal Calves

Newborn calves deprived of colostrum were used to determine distribution of uptake of γ-globulin labeled with iodine-125 in small intestine. Ten calves less than 12.5h of age (average 7h) were anesthetized, and intestines were exteriorized through an abdominal incision. Intestine was ligated into 10-cm segments, 70cm apart, beginning at the ileocecal junction and progressing anteriorally, then each segment injected with 100mg (∿ 1 µCi) labeled γ-globulin in 5ml electrolyte solution, and incubated for 1.5h. One additional segment was formed adjacent to segments 1,5, and 10 to assess uptake after .5h incubation with [iodine-125] γ-globulin. After prescribed γ-globulin exposure, segments were excised; then volume of lumen contents, segment weight, and tissue activity were measured. The location of each segment was the percentage of distance from cecum to abomasum. Uptake was milligrams γ-globulin per gram of segment tissue. Distribution of γ-globulin uptake after 1.5h incubation was a cubic function of segment position. Uptake was greatest in a region 15% of the cecum-abomasum distance and declined progressively toward the abomasum. After .5-h incubation with γ-globulin, regression of uptake on segment position was a quadratic function with greatest uptake at 30% of cecumabomasum distance. Uptake was greater in segments exposed to γ-globulin for 1.5h than .5h.

The pathogenesis of enteric colibacillosis in neonatal unsuckled calves

The development of pathological lesions in the small intestine of neonatal calves is described. Seven newborn calves were challenged orally with a known enteropathogenic strain of E coli 0101k?(A) and killed at varying times after inoculation. Adhesion of bacteria to the mucosa of the small intestine was observed in all calves. A few organisms were seen in the distal small intestine at three hours after inoculation and thereafter adhesion progressed anteriorly along the intestine in calves killed from six to 36 hours. In these calves pathological changes occurred between six and 12 hours after inoculation. Villi were stunted and thickened and the epithelial surface was irregular. A further calf, anaesthetised from five-and-a-half to 10 hours after inoculation and repeatedly sampled from the distal small intestine, developed similar lesions abruptly at nine hours after inoculation. Villus and crypt lengths in the challenged calves were compared with those in three normal uninoculated control calves.

Pathological changes in the small intestine of neonatal calves naturally infected with reo-like virus (rotavirus)

Nine calves, of which six had been challenged with an enteropathogenic strain of Escherichia coli, were found to be naturally infected with rotavirus. Rotavirus was recovered from the faeces of six calves and rotavirus antigen was detected in the intestinal mucosa of all calves. Stunting and fusion of villi were seen principally in the proximal and middle small intestine, where rotavirus antigen was detected by immunofluorescence. Typical lesions of enteric colibacillosis were found in the distal ileum of the challenged calves, associated with adhesion of the challenge strain of E coli to the mucosa. All samples were removed from the intestine under general anaesthesia and denudation of villi was not observed. However, following exsanguination and resampling at the same site in the small intestine of one calf, denudation was a constant feature.

Pathological Changes in the Small Intestine of Neonatal Calves with Enteric Colibacillosis

Three neonatal calves, protected from colisepticaemia by intravenously administered immunoglobulin M, were infected orally with Escherichia coli type 0101 K?(A). All calves developed severe enteric colibacillosis. When they were 4 days old stunting and fusion of villi were seen in the distal half of the small intestine and were associated with adhesion of the challenge organism to the mucosa. Two uninfected control calves kept under similar conditions, did not develop diarrhoea and had no lesions.
