Observation of resonances in the transition state region of the F + NH3 reaction using anion photoelectron spectroscopy.

The transition state of a chemical reaction is a dividing surface on the reaction potential energy surface (PES) between reactants and products and is thus of fundamental interest in understanding chemical reactivity. The transient nature of the transition state presents challenges to its experimental characterization. Transition-state spectroscopy experiments based on negative-ion photodetachment can provide a direct probe of this region of the PES, revealing the detailed vibrational structure associated with the transition state. Here we study the F + NH3 → HF + NH2 reaction using slow photoelectron velocity-map imaging spectroscopy of cryogenically cooled FNH3- anions. Reduced-dimensionality quantum dynamical simulations performed on a global PES show excellent agreement with the experimental results, enabling the assignment of spectral structure. Our combined experimental-theoretical study reveals a manifold of vibrational Feshbach resonances in the product well of the F + NH3 PES. At higher energies, the spectra identify features attributed to resonances localized across the transition state and into the reactant complex that may impact the bimolecular reaction dynamics.

High Resolution Photoelectron Spectroscopy of the Acetyl Anion.

High-resolution photoelectron spectra of cryogenically cooled acetyl anions (CH3CO-) obtained using slow photoelectron velocity-map imaging are reported. The high resolution of the photoelectron spectrum yields a refined electron affinity of 0.4352 ± 0.0012 eV for the acetyl radical as well as the observation of a new vibronic structure that is assigned based on ab initio calculations. Three vibrational frequencies of the neutral radical are measured to be 1047 ± 3 cm-1 (ν6), 834 ± 2 cm-1 (ν7), and 471 ± 1 cm-1 (ν8). This work represents the first experimental measurement of the ν6 frequency of the neutral. The measured electron affinity is used to calculate a refined value of 1641.35 ± 0.42 kJ mol-1 for the gas-phase acidity of acetaldehyde. Analysis of the photoelectron angular distributions provides insight into the character of the highest occupied molecular orbital of the anion, revealing a molecular orbital with strong d-character. Additionally, details of a new centroiding algorithm based on finite differences, which has the potential to decrease data acquisition times by an order of magnitude at no cost to accuracy, are provided.

Photoelectron spectroscopy of cryogenically cooled NiO2-via slow photoelectron velocity-map imaging.

High-resolution anion photoelectron spectra of cryogenically cooled NiO2- anions, obtained using slow photoelectron velocity-map imaging (cryo-SEVI), are presented in tandem with coupled cluster electronic structure calculations including relativistic effects. The experimental spectra encompass the X̃1Σg+ ← X̃2Πg, ã3Πg ← X̃2Πg, and Ã1Πg ← X̃2Πg photodetachment transitions of linear ONiO0/-, revealing previously unobserved vibrational structure in all three electronic bands. The high-resolution afforded by cryo-SEVI allows for the extraction of vibrational frequencies for each state, consistent with those previously measured in the ground state and in good agreement with scalar-relativistic coupled-cluster calculations. Previously unobserved vibrational structure is observed in the ã3Πg and Ã1Πg states and is tentatively assigned. Further, a refined electron affinity of 3.0464(7) eV for NiO2 is obtained as well as precise term energies for the ã and à states of NiO2 of 0.3982(7) and 0.7422(10) eV, respectively. Numerous Franck-Condon forbidden transitions involving the doubly degenerate ν2 bending mode are observed and ascribed to Herzberg-Teller coupling to an excited electronic state.

Electronic structure of NdO via slow photoelectron velocity-map imaging spectroscopy of NdO--.

Electronically excited NdO is a possible product of the chemistry associated with the release of Nd into the ionosphere, and emission from these states may contribute to the observations following such experiments. To better characterize the energetics and spectroscopy of NdO, we report a combined experimental and theoretical study using slow photoelectron velocity-map imaging spectroscopy of cryogenically cooled NdO- anions (cryo-SEVI) supplemented by wave function-based quantum-chemical calculations. Using cryo-SEVI, we measure the electron affinity of NdO to be 1.0091(7) eV and resolve numerous transitions to low-lying electronic and vibrational states of NdO that are assigned with the aid of the electronic structure calculations. Additionally, temperature-dependent data suggest contributions from the (2)4.5 state of NdO- residing 2350cm-1 above the ground anion state. Photodetachment to higher-lying excited states of NdO is also reported, which may help to clarify observations from prior release experiments.

High-Resolution Photoelectron Spectroscopy of Vibrationally Excited OH.

The effect of vibrational pre-excitation of anions on their photoelectron spectra is explored, combining slow photoelectron velocity-map imaging of cryogenically cooled anions (cryo-SEVI) with tunable IR radiation to pre-excite the anions. This new IR cryo-SEVI method is applied to OH- as a test system, where the R(0) transition of the hydroxyl anion (3591.53 cm-1) is pumped. Vibrational excitation induces a 30% depletion in photodetachment signal from the v = 0, J = 0 ground state of the anion and the appearance of all five allowed, rotationally resolved photodetachment transitions from the OH- (v = 1, J = 1) level, each with peak widths between 1 and 2 cm-1. By scanning the IR laser, IR cryo-SEVI can also serve as a novel action technique to obtain the vibrational spectrum of OH-, giving an experimental value for the R(0) transition of 3591(1.2) cm-1.

Unveiling the coexistence of cis- and trans-isomers in the hydrolysis of ZrO2: A coupled DFT and high-resolution photoelectron spectroscopy study.

High-resolution anion photoelectron spectroscopy of the ZrO3H2 - and ZrO3D2 - anions and complementary electronic structure calculations are used to investigate the reaction between zirconium dioxide and a single water molecule, ZrO2 0/- + H2O. Experimental spectra of ZrO3H2 - and ZrO3D2 - were obtained using slow photoelectron velocity-map imaging of cryogenically cooled anions, revealing the presence of two dissociative adduct conformers and yielding insight into the vibronic structure of the corresponding neutral species. Franck-Condon simulations for both the cis- and trans-dihydroxide structures are required to fully reproduce the experimental spectrum. Additionally, it was found that water-splitting is stabilized more by ZrO2 than TiO2, suggesting Zr-based catalysts are more reactive toward hydrolysis.

High-resolution anion photoelectron spectroscopy of cryogenically cooled 4-atom silicon carbides

High-resolution anion photoelectron spectra of cryogenically cooled , , and obtained using slow photoelectron velocity-map imaging (cryo-SEVI) are presented, providing insight into the geometries, energetics, and vibronic structure of the anionic and the neutral clusters. These spectra yield accurate vibrational frequencies for the neutral clusters. They also yield refined adiabatic detachment energies (ADEs) for the ground states of and of 1.5374(6) eV and 1.9019(4) eV, respectively, while the ADE of a low-lying isomer of is found to be 1.9050(7) eV. The cryo-SEVI spectra show that the ground state of is a distorted trapezoid, and represent the first confirmation of the distorted trapezoid structure of , the only low-lying isomer of this cluster with a permanent dipole moment. Additional transitions are observed from two low-lying anion isomers: a linear structure and a rhombus. The spectrum of , in combination with electronic structure calculations, suggests that the true ground state of is a ring structure with a transannular C–C bond, addressing a longstanding controversy surrounding this cluster. All three spectra exhibit Franck-Condon forbidden transitions; these are attributed to Herzberg-Teller coupling in and and autodetachment from an excited electronic state of .

High-Resolution Photoelectron Spectroscopy of Cryogenically Cooled NO3̅.

High-resolution anion photoelectron spectra of cryogenically cooled NO3̅ anions obtained using slow photoelectron velocity-map imaging are presented and provide new insight into the vibronic structure of the corresponding neutral radical. A combination of improved spectral resolution, measurement of energy-dependent intensity effects, temperature control, and comparison to theory allows for full assignment of the vibronic features observed in this spectrum. We obtain a refined electron affinity of 3.9289(14) eV for NO3. Further, the appearance of Franck-Condon forbidden transitions from vibrationally cold anions to neutral states with excitation along the NO3 ν4 mode confirms that these features arise from vibronic coupling with the B̃2E' excited state of NO3 and are not hot bands, as has been suggested. Together, the suite of experimental and simulated results provides clear evidence that the ν3 fundamental of NO3 resides near 1050 cm-1, addressing a long-standing controversy surrounding this vibrational assignment.

Vibrationally resolved photoelectron spectroscopy of oligothiophene radical anions.

Vibrationally resolved photoelectron spectroscopy of terthiophene, quaterthiophene, and quinquethiophene radical anions is presented. The increased spectral resolution afforded by the combination of slow photoelectron velocity-map imaging and ion cooling in a cryogenic ion trap allows the characterization of vibronic structures within the S0 and T1 states. Analysis of the spectra, aided by electronic structure calculations and Franck-Condon simulations, revealed evidence for significant contributions from kinetically trapped higher energy conformers in the anion-to-triplet transitions. Unlike the lowest energy structures, where all the thiophene linkers are in the trans configuration, these higher energy conformers contain at least one cis linker. We also found that the adiabatic Franck-Condon simulations drastically underestimated the intensities of some vibronic features in the singlet ground state spectra due to large geometry changes upon photodetachment and anharmonic couplings in the singlet state.

High-resolution photoelectron spectroscopy of the pyridinide isomers

Isomer-specific, high-resolution photoelectron spectra of cryogenically cooled pyridinide anions obtained using slow photoelectron velocity-map imaging are presented. New vibrational structure in the detachment spectrum of para-pyridinide is resolved, and the spectra of meta- and ortho-pyridinide are reported for the first time. These spectra yield electron affinities of 1.4797(5), 1.4473(5), and 0.8669(7) eV for the para-, meta-, and ortho-pyridyl radicals, respectively, as well as a number of vibrational frequencies for each neutral isomer. While most of the resolved structure in all three spectra is readily assigned by comparison to B3LYP/6-311+G* Franck-Condon simulations, the para-pyridinide spectrum shows newly resolved fine structure attributed to anharmonic coupling within the vibrational manifold of the corresponding neutral radical. Isomeric trends in the photoelectron angular distributions are rationalized by approximating the detached anion orbitals as superpositions of s-, p-, and d-like hydrogenic orbitals, based on an application of Sanov’s generalized mixing model [D. Khuseynov et al., J. Chem. Phys. 141, 124312 (2014)]. The presented experimental and theoretical results are used to address the relative energies of the anion and neutral isomers, as well as the site-specific bond dissociation energies of pyridine.

Slow photoelectron velocity-map imaging of cold and .

High-resolution anion photoelectron spectra of cryogenically cooled C7 - and C9 - clusters obtained using slow photoelectron velocity-map imaging are presented, providing insight into the vibronic structure of neutral C7 and C9. These spectra yield accurate measurements of vibrational frequencies for the neutral clusters as well as electron affinities of 3.3517(4) and 3.6766(14) eV for C7 and C9, respectively. In the C7 - spectrum, transitions involving the previously unreported v 1 and v 2 symmetric stretching modes, as well as the v 9, v 10, and v 11 asymmetric bending modes, are assigned. Spin-orbit splitting is observed for several transitions in this spectrum, giving an energy difference of 28(6) cm-1 between the and spin-orbit levels of the C7 - anion. In the spectrum of C9 -, transitions involving the previously unreported symmetric stretch v 1 and the asymmetric bend v 11 are observed. In both spectra, several features are assigned to Franck-Condon forbidden transitions involving the doubly degenerate v 10 and v 11 modes of C7 and the v 13 and v 14 modes of C9. The appearance of these transitions is attributed to Herzberg-Teller coupling between the electronic states of the neutral clusters. Additional FC-forbidden transitions to states previously observed in gas-phase infrared experiments are observed and attributed to vibronic coupling between the electronic states of the anion, resulting in non-totally symmetric character in the anion's full vibrational ground state. Finally, consideration of the energy dependence of detachment cross sections and Dyson orbital analyses reveal that addition of more carbon atoms to the linear chain results in photodetachment from delocalized molecular orbitals with increasing nodal structure, leading to threshold photodetachment cross sections that differ considerably from simple symmetry considerations.

Slow Photoelectron Velocity-Map Imaging of Cryogenically Cooled Anions.

Slow photoelectron velocity-map imaging spectroscopy of cryogenically cooled anions (cryo-SEVI) is a powerful technique for elucidating the vibrational and electronic structure of neutral radicals, clusters, and reaction transition states. SEVI is a high-resolution variant of anion photoelectron spectroscopy based on photoelectron imaging that yields spectra with energy resolution as high as 1-2 cm-1. The preparation of cryogenically cold anions largely eliminates hot bands and dramatically narrows the rotational envelopes of spectral features, enabling the acquisition of well-resolved photoelectron spectra for complex and spectroscopically challenging species. We review the basis and history of the SEVI method, including recent experimental developments that have improved its resolution and versatility. We then survey recent SEVI studies to demonstrate the utility of this technique in the spectroscopy of aromatic radicals, metal and metal oxide clusters, nonadiabatic interactions between excited states of small molecules, and transition states of benchmark bimolecular reactions.

Electronic structure of SmO and SmO- via slow photoelectron velocity-map imaging spectroscopy and spin-orbit CASPT2 calculations.

The chemi-ionization reaction of atomic samarium, Sm + O → SmO+ + e-, has been investigated by the Air Force Research Laboratory as a means to modify local electron density in the ionosphere for reduction of scintillation of high-frequency radio waves. Neutral SmO is a likely unwanted byproduct. The spectroscopy of SmO is of great interest to aid in interpretation of optical emission spectra recorded following atmospheric releases of Sm as part of the Metal Oxide Space Cloud (MOSC) observations. Here, we report a joint experimental and theoretical study of SmO using slow photoelectron velocity-map imaging spectroscopy of cryogenically cooled SmO- anions (cryo-SEVI) and high-level spin-orbit complete active space calculations with corrections from second order perturbation theory (CASPT2). With cryo-SEVI, we measure the electron affinity of SmO to be 1.0581(11) eV and report electronic and vibrational structure of low-lying electronic states of SmO in good agreement with theory and prior experimental work. We also obtain spectra of higher-lying excited states of SmO for direct comparison to the MOSC results.

Feshbach resonances in the exit channel of the F + CH3OH → HF + CH3O reaction observed using transition-state spectroscopy.

The transition state governs how chemical bonds form and cleave during a chemical reaction and its direct characterization is a long-standing challenge in physical chemistry. Transition state spectroscopy experiments based on negative-ion photodetachment provide a direct probe of the vibrational structure and metastable resonances that are characteristic of the reactive surface. Dynamical resonances are extremely sensitive to the topography of the reactive surface and provide an exceptional point of comparison with theory. Here we study the seven-atom F + CH3OH → HF + CH3O reaction using slow photoelectron velocity-map imaging spectroscopy of cryocooled CH3OHF- anions. These measurements reveal spectral features associated with a manifold of vibrational Feshbach resonances and bound states supported by the post-transition state potential well. Quantum dynamical calculations yield excellent agreement with the experimental results, allow the assignment of spectral structure and demonstrate that the key dynamics of complex bimolecular reactions can be captured with a relatively simple theoretical framework.

Low-lying vibronic level structure of the ground state of the methoxy radical: Slow electron velocity-map imaging (SEVI) spectra and Köppel-Domcke-Cederbaum (KDC) vibronic Hamiltonian calculations.

A joint experimental and theoretical study is reported on the low-lying vibronic level structure of the ground state of the methoxy radical using slow photoelectron velocity-map imaging spectroscopy of cryogenically cooled, mass-selected anions (cryo-SEVI) and Köppel-Domcke-Cederbaum (KDC) vibronic Hamiltonian calculations. The KDC vibronic model Hamiltonian in the present study was parametrized using high-level quantum chemistry, allowing the assignment of the cryo-SEVI spectra for vibronic levels of CH3O up to 2000 cm-1 and of CD3O up to 1500 cm-1 above the vibrational origin, using calculated vibronic wave functions. The adiabatic electron affinities of CH3O and CD3O are determined from the cryo-SEVI spectra to be 1.5689 ± 0.0007 eV and 1.5548 ± 0.0007 eV, respectively, demonstrating improved precision compared to previous work. Experimental peak splittings of <10 cm-1 are resolved between the e1/2 and e3/2 components of the 61 and 51 vibronic levels. A pair of spin-vibronic levels at 1638 and 1677 cm-1 were predicted in the calculation as the e1/2 and e3/2 components of 62 levels and experimentally resolved for the first time. The strong variation of the spin-orbit splittings with a vibrational quantum number is in excellent agreement between theory and experiment. The observation of signals from nominally forbidden a1 vibronic levels in the cryo-SEVI spectra also provides direct evidence of vibronic coupling between ground and electronically excited states of methoxy.

Non-Adiabatic Effects on Excited States of Vinylidene Observed with Slow Photoelectron Velocity-Map Imaging.

High-resolution slow photoelectron velocity-map imaging spectra of cryogenically cooled X̃2B2 H2CC- and D2CC- in the region of the vinylidene triplet excited states are reported. Three electronic bands are observed and, with the assistance of electronic structure calculations and quantum dynamics on ab initio-based near-equilibrium potential energy surfaces, are assigned as detachment to the [Formula: see text] 3B2 (T1), b̃ 3A2 (T2), and à 1A2 (S1) excited states of neutral vinylidene. This work provides the first experimental observation of the à singlet excited state of H2CC. While regular vibrational structure is observed for the ã and à electronic bands, a number of irregular features are resolved in the vicinity of the b̃ band vibrational origin. High-level ab initio calculations suggest that this anomalous structure arises from a conical intersection between the ã and b̃ triplet states near the b̃ state minimum, which strongly perturbs the vibrational levels in the two electronic states through nonadiabatic coupling. Using the adiabatic electron affinity of H2CC previously measured to be 0.490(6) eV by Ervin and co-workers [J. Chem. Phys. 1989, 91, 5974], term energies for the excited neutral states of H2CC are found to be T0(ã 3B2) = 2.064(6), T0(b̃ 3A2) = 2.738(6), and T0(à 1A2) = 2.991(6) eV.

High-resolution photoelectron imaging spectroscopy of cryogenically cooled Fe4O(-) and Fe5O(.).

We report high-resolution photodetachment spectra of the cryogenically cooled iron monoxide clusters Fe4O(-) and Fe5O(-) obtained with slow photoelectron velocity-map imaging (cryo-SEVI). Well-resolved vibrational progressions are observed in both sets of spectra, and transitions to low-lying excited states of both species are seen. In order to identify the structural isomers, electronic states, and vibrational modes that contribute to the cryo-SEVI spectra of these clusters, experimental results are compared with density functional theory calculations and Franck-Condon simulations. The main bands observed in the SEVI spectra are assigned to the (15)A2←(16)B2 photodetachment transition of Fe4O(-) and the (17)A'←(18)A″ photodetachment transition of Fe5O(-). We report electron affinities of 1.6980(3) eV for Fe4O and 1.8616(3) eV for Fe5O, although there is some uncertainty as to whether the (15)A2 state is the true ground state of Fe4O. The iron atoms have a distorted tetrahedral geometry in Fe4O(0/-) and a distorted trigonal-bipyramidal arrangement in Fe5O(0/-). For both neutral and anionic species, the oxygen atom preferably binds in a μ2-oxo configuration along the cluster edge. This finding is in contrast to prior predictions that Fe5O(0/-) exhibits a μ3 face-bound structure.

Slow Photoelectron Velocity-Map Imaging Spectroscopy of the ortho-Hydroxyphenoxide Anion.

We report high-resolution photodetachment spectra of cryogenically cooled ortho-hydroxyphenoxide anions (o-HOC6H4O(-)) using slow photoelectron velocity-map imaging spectroscopy (cryo-SEVI). We observe transitions to the three lowest-lying electronic states of the ortho-hydroxyphenoxy radical, and resolve detailed vibrational features. Comparison to Franck-Condon simulations allows for clear assignment of vibronic structure. We find an electron affinity of 2.3292(4) eV for the neutral X̃(2)A″ ground state, improving upon the accuracy of previous experiments. We measure term energies of 1.4574(7) eV and 1.5922(48) eV for the Ã(2)A' and B̃(2)A″ excited states respectively, representing their first resolution and clear assignment. Photodetachment threshold effects are considered to explain the structure of these bands.

Vibrational and electronic structure of the α- and β-naphthyl radicals via slow photoelectron velocity-map imaging.

Slow photoelectron velocity-map imaging (SEVI) spectroscopy has been used to study the vibronic structure of gas-phase α- and β-naphthyl radicals (C(10)H(7)). SEVI of cryogenically cooled anions yields spectra with <4 cm(-1) resolution, allowing for the observation and interpretation of congested vibrational structure. Isomer-specific photoelectron spectra of detachment to the radical ground electronic states show detailed structure, allowing assignment of vibrational fundamental frequencies. Transitions to the first excited states of both radical isomers are also observed; vibronic coupling and photodetachment threshold effects are considered to explain the structure of the excited bands.

Structural isomers of Ti₂O₄ and Zr₂O₄ anions identified by slow photoelectron velocity-map imaging spectroscopy.

High-resolution anion photoelectron spectra are reported for the group 4 metal dioxide clusters Ti2O4(-) and Zr2O4(-). Slow photoelectron velocity-map imaging (SEVI) spectroscopy of cryogenically cooled, mass-selected anions yields photoelectron spectra with submillielectronvolt resolution, revealing extensive and well-resolved vibrational progressions. By comparison of the spectra with Franck-Condon simulations, we have identified the C(2v) and C(3v) isomers as the ground states of Ti2O4(-) and Zr2O4(-) anions, respectively. Minor contributions from the C(2h) isomer of Ti2O4(-) and the C(2v) isomer of Zr2O4(-) are also seen. The SEVI spectra yield upper bounds for the adiabatic detachment energies, as well as vibrational frequencies for various modes of the neutral Ti2O4 and Zr2O4 species.
