QUENCHING DEPENDS ON MORPHOLOGIES: IMPLICATIONS FROM THE ULTRAVIOLET-OPTICAL RADIAL COLOR DISTRIBUTIONS IN GREEN VALLEY GALAXIES

In this Letter, we analyse the radial UV-optical color distributions in a sample of low redshift green valley (GV) galaxies, with the Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX)+Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) images, to investigate how the residual recent star formation distribute in these galaxies. We find that the dust-corrected $u-r$ colors of early-type galaxies (ETGs) are flat out to $R_{90}$, while the colors turn blue monotonously when $r>0.5R_{50}$ for late-type galaxies (LTGs). More than a half of the ETGs are blue-cored and have remarkable positive NUV$-r$ color gradients, suggesting that their star formation are centrally concentrated; the rest have flat color distributions out to $R_{90}$. The centrally concentrated star formation activity in a large portion of ETGs is confirmed by the SDSS spectroscopy, showing that $\sim$50 % ETGs have EW(H$\rm \alpha$)$>6.0$ \AA. For the LTGs, 95% of them show uniform radial color profiles, which can be interpreted as a red bulge plus an extended blue disk. The links between the two kinds of ETGs, e.g., those objects having remarkable "blue-cored" and those having flat color gradients, are less known and require future investigations. It is suggested that the LTGs follow a general picture that quenching first occur in the core regions, and then finally extend to the rest of the galaxy. Our results can be re-examined and have important implications for the IFU surveys, such as MaNGA and SAMI.

THE SLOAN DIGITAL SKY SURVEY STRIPE 82 IMAGING DATA: DEPTH-OPTIMIZED CO-ADDS OVER 300 deg 2 IN FIVE FILTERS

We present and release co-added images of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Stripe 82. Stripe 82 covers an area of 300 deg^2 on the Celestial Equator, and has been repeatedly scanned 70-90 times in the ugriz bands by the SDSS imaging survey. By making use of all available data in the SDSS archive, our co-added images are optimized for depth. Input single-epoch frames were properly processed and weighted based on seeing, sky transparency, and background noise before co-addition. The resultant products are co-added science images and their associated weight images that record relative weights at individual pixels. The depths of the co-adds, measured as the 5 sigma detection limits of the aperture (3.2 arcsec diameter) magnitudes for point sources, are roughly 23.9, 25.1, 24.6, 24.1, and 22.8 AB magnitudes in the five bands, respectively. They are 1.9-2.2 mag deeper than the best SDSS single-epoch data. The co-added images have good image quality, with an average point-spread function FWHM of ~1 arcsec in the r, i, and z bands. We also release object catalogs that were made with SExtractor. These co-added products have many potential uses for studies of galaxies, quasars, and Galactic structure. We further present and release near-IR J-band images that cover ~90 deg^2 of Stripe 82. These images were obtained using the NEWFIRM camera on the NOAO 4-m Mayall telescope, and have a depth of about 20.0--20.5 Vega magnitudes (also 5 sigma detection limits for point sources).

Kinematics, structure and environment of three dwarf spheroidal galaxies

AbstractWe explore the environmental status of three low surface brightness dwarf spheroidal galaxies (dSphs) KKH65, KK180 and KK227 using the results of our long slit spectroscopic observations at the 6m telescope of the Russian Academy of Sciences and surface photometry on the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) images. The objects were selected by Karachentseva in 2010 as presumably isolated galaxies. The obtained surface brightness profiles demonstrate that our sample dSphs are less centrally concentrated than the objects of the same morphological type in the Virgo cluster (VC). Using the derived kinematic data we searched for possible neighbours of the dSphs within the projected distances from them Rproj > 500 kpc and with the differences in radial velocities |Δ V| > 500 kms−1. We applied the group finding algorithm by Makarov and Karachentsev to the selected sample. Our analysis shows that the dwarf galaxies of our study are not isolated. KKH65 and KK227 belong to the groups NGC3414 and NGC5371, respectively. KK180 is in the VC infall region. We conclude that it is not possible at the moment to justify the existence of isolated dSphs outside the Local Volume. The searches are complicated due to the lack of the accurate distances to the galaxies farther than 10 Mpc.

The SDSS–2MASS–WISE 10-dimensional stellar colour locus

We present the fiducial main-sequence stellar locus traced by 10 photometric colours observed by Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS), and Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE). Median colours are determined using 1052 793 stars with r-band extinction less than 0.125. We use this locus to measure the dust extinction curve relative to the r band, which is consistent with previous measurements in the SDSS and 2MASS bands. The WISE band extinction coefficients are larger than predicted by standard extinction models. Using 13 lines of sight, we find variations in the extinction curve in H, Ks, and WISE bandpasses. Relative extinction decreases towards Galactic anticentre, in agreement with prior studies. Relative extinction increases with Galactic latitude, in contrast to previous observations. This indicates a universal mid-IR extinction law does not exist due to variations in dust grain size and chemistry with Galactocentric position. A preliminary search for outliers due to warm circumstellar dust is also presented, using stars with high signal-to-noise ratio in the W3 band. We find 199 such outliers, identified by excess emission in Ks − W3. Inspection of SDSS images for these outliers reveals a large number of contaminants due to nearby galaxies. Six sources appear to be genuine dust candidates, yielding a fraction of systems with infrared excess of 0.12 ± 0.05 per cent.

Seeing in the dark – II. Cosmic shear in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey

Statistical weak lensing by large-scale structure – cosmic shear – is a promising cosmological tool, which has motivated the design of several large upcoming surveys. Here, we present a measurement of cosmic shear using co-added Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) imaging in 168 square degrees of the equatorial region, with r < 23.5 and i < 22.5, a source number density of 2.2 per arcmin^2 and mean redshift of z_(med) = 0.52. These co-adds were generated using a new method described in the companion Paper I that was intended to minimize systematic errors in the lensing measurement due to coherent point spread function anisotropies that are otherwise prevalent in the SDSS imaging data. We present measurements of cosmic shear out to angular separations of 2°, along with systematics tests that (combined with those from Paper I on the catalogue generation) demonstrate that our results are dominated by statistical rather than systematic errors. Assuming a cosmological model corresponding to Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe 7(WMAP7) and allowing only the amplitude of matter fluctuations σ_8 to vary, we find a best-fitting value of σ_8=0.636^(+0.109)_(−0.154) (1σ); without systematic errors this would be σ_8=0.636^(+0.099)_(−0.137) (1σ). Assuming a flat Λ cold dark matter model, the combined constraints with WMAP7 are σ_8=0.784^(+0.028)_(−0.026)(1σ)^(+0.055)_(−0.054)(2σ) and Ω_mh^2=0.1303^(+0.0047)_(−0.0048)(1σ)^(+0.009)_(−0.009)(2σ); the 2σ error ranges are, respectively, 14 and 17 per cent smaller than WMAP7 alone.

Seeing in the dark – I. Multi-epoch alchemy

Weak lensing by large-scale structure is an invaluable cosmological tool given that most of the energy density of the concordance cosmology is invisible. Several large ground-based imaging surveys will attempt to measure this effect over the coming decade, but reliable control of the spurious lensing signal introduced by atmospheric turbulence and telescope optics remains a challenging problem. We address this challenge with a demonstration that point-spread function (PSF) effects on measured galaxy shapes in current ground-based surveys can be corrected with existing analysis techniques. In this work, we co-add existing Sloan Digital Sky Survey imaging on the equatorial stripe in order to build a data set with the statistical power to measure cosmic shear, while using a rounding kernel method to null out the effects of the anisotropic PSF. We build a galaxy catalogue from the combined imaging, characterise its photometric properties, and show that the spurious shear remaining in this catalogue after the PSF correction is negligible compared to the expected cosmic shear signal. We identify a new source of systematic error in the shear-shear auto-correlations arising from selection biases related to masking. Finally, we discuss the circumstances in which this method is expected to be useful for upcoming ground-based surveys that have lensing as one of the science goals, and identify the systematic errors that can reduce its efficacy.

MASSIVE STAR-FORMING HOST GALAXIES OF QUASARS ON SLOAN DIGITAL SKY SURVEY STRIPE 82

The stellar properties of about 800 galaxies hosting optically luminous, unobscured quasars at z < 0.6 are analyzed. Deep co-added Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) images of the quasars on Stripe 82 are decomposed into nucleus and host galaxy using point spread function and Sersic models. The systematic errors in the measured galaxy absolute magnitudes and colors are estimated to be less than 0.5 mag and 0.1 mag, respectively, with simulated quasar images. The effect of quasar light scattered by the interstellar medium is also carefully addressed. The measured quasar-to-galaxy ratio in total flux decreases toward longer wavelengths, from ~8 in the u band to ~1 in the i and z bands. We find that the SDSS quasars are hosted exclusively by massive galaxies (stellar mass Mstar > 10^{10} Msun), which is consistent with previous results for less luminous narrow-line (obscured) active galactic nuclei (AGNs). The quasar hosts are very blue and almost absent on the red sequence, showing stark contrast to the color-magnitude distribution of normal galaxies. The fact that more powerful AGNs reside in galaxies with higher star-formation efficiency may indicate that negative AGN feedback, if it exists, is not concurrent with the most luminous phase of AGNs. We also find positive correlation between the mass of supermassive black holes (SMBHs; Mbh) and host stellar mass, but the Mbh - Mstar relation is offset toward large Mbh or small Mstar compared to the local relation. While this could indicate that SMBHs grow earlier than do their host galaxies, such an argument is not conclusive, as the effect may be dominated by observational biases.

Galaxy And Mass Assembly (GAMA): galaxy radial alignments in GAMA groups

We constrain the distributions of projected radial alignment angles of satellite galaxy shapes within the Galaxy And Mass Assembly survey group catalogue. We identify the galaxy groups using spectroscopic redshifts and measure galaxy projected ellipticities from Sloan Digital Sky Survey imaging. With a sample of 3,850 groups with 13,655 satellite galaxies with high quality shape measurements, we find a less than 2-sigma signal of radial alignments in the mean projected ellipticity components and the projected position angle when using galaxy shape estimates optimized for weak lensing measurements. Our radial alignment measurement increases to greater than 3-sigma significance relative to the expectation for no alignments if we use 2-D S\'ersic model fits to define galaxy orientations. Our weak measurement of radial alignments is in conflict with predictions from dark matter N-body simulations, which we interpret as evidence for large mis-alignments of baryons and dark matter in group and cluster satellites. Within our uncertainties, that are dominated by our small sample size, we find only weak and marginally significant trends of the radial alignment angle distributions on projected distance from the group centre, host halo mass, and redshift that could be consistent with a tidal torquing mechanism for radial alignments. Using our lensing optimized shape estimators, we estimate that intrinsic alignments of galaxy group members may contribute a systematic error to the mean differential projected surface mass density of groups inferred from weak lensing observations by -1 +/- 20% at scales around 300 kpc/h from the group centre assuming a photometric redshift r.m.s. error of 10%, and given our group sample with median redshift of 0.17 and median virial masses ~10^{13} h^{-1}M_{sun}.

Properties of the most metal-poor gas-rich LSB dwarf galaxies SDSS J0015+0104 and J2354−0005 residing in the Eridanus void

SDSS J0015+0104 is the lowest metallicity low surface brightness dwarf (LSBD) galaxy known. The oxygen abundance in its HII region SDSS J001520.70+010436.9 (at ~1.5 kpc from the galaxy centre) is 12+log(O/H)=7.07 (Guseva et al.). This galaxy, at the distance of 28.4 Mpc, appears to reside deeply in the volume devoid of luminous massive galaxies, known as the Eridanus void. SDSS J235437.29-000501.6 is another Eridanus void LSBD galaxy, with parameter 12+log(O/H)=7.36 (also Guseva et al.). We present the results of their HI observations with the Nancay Radio Telescope revealing their high ratios of M(HI)/L_B ~2.3. Based on the Sloan Digital Sky Survey images, we derived for both galaxies their radial surface brightness profiles and the main photometric parameters. Their colours and total magnitudes are used to estimate the galaxy stellar mass and ages. The related gas mass-fractions, f_g ~0.98 and ~0.97, and the extremely low metallicities (much lower than for their more typical counterparts with the same luminosity) indicate their unevolved status. We compare these Eridanus void LSBDs with several extreme LSBD galaxies residing in the nearby Lynx-Cancer void. Based on the combination of all their unusual properties, the two discussed LSBD galaxies are similar to the unusual LSBDs residing in the closer void. This finding presents additional evidence for the existence in voids of a4 figures, sizable fraction of low-mass unevolved galaxies. Their dedicated search might result in the substantial increase of the number of such objects in the local Universe and in the advancement of understanding their nature.

ENHANCED NITROGEN IN MORPHOLOGICALLY DISTURBED BLUE COMPACT GALAXIES AT 0.20 &lt; z &lt; 0.35: PROBING GALAXY MERGING FEATURES

We present a study of correlations between the elemental abundances and galaxy morphologies of 91 blue compact galaxies (BCGs) at z=0.20-0.35 with Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) DR7 data. We classify the morphologies of the galaxies as either 'disturbed' or 'undisturbed', by visual inspection of the SDSS images, and using the Gini coefficient and M_20. We derive oxygen and nitrogen abundances using the T_e method. We find that a substantial fraction of BCGs with disturbed morphologies, indicative of merger remnants, show relatively high N/O and low O/H abundance ratios. The majority of the disturbed BCGs exhibit higher N/O values at a given O/H value compared to the morphologically undisturbed galaxies, implying more efficient nitrogen enrichment in disturbed BCGs. We detect Wolf-Rayet (WR) features in only a handful of the disturbed BCGs, which appears to contradict the idea that WR stars are responsible for high nitrogen abundance. Combining these results with Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) GR6 ultraviolet (UV) data, we find that the majority of the disturbed BCGs show systematically lower values of the H alpha to near-UV star formation rate ratio. The equivalent width of the H beta emission line is also systematically lower in the disturbed BCGs. Based on these results, we infer that disturbed BCGs have undergone star formation over relatively longer time scales, resulting in a more continuous enrichment of nitrogen. We suggest that this correlation between morphology and chemical abundances in BCGs is due to a difference in their recent star formation histories.

The Evolution of the Mass-Metallicity Relation at 0.20 &lt; z &lt; 0.35

We present a spectroscopic study of 343 blue compact galaxies (BCGs) at 0.20 < z < 0.35 from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) DR7 data. We derive gas phase oxygen abundance using the empirical and direct method. Stellar masses of galaxies are derived from the STARLIGHT code. We also derive star formation rates of galaxies based on <TEX>$H{\alpha}$</TEX> emission line from the SDSS as well as far-ultraviolet (FUV) flux from the Galaxy Evolution Explorer GR6 data. Evolution of the luminosity-metallicity and mass-metallicity (M-Z) relations with redshift is observed. At a given luminosity and mass, galaxies at higher redshifts appear to be biased to low metallicities relative to the lower redshift counterparts. Furthermore, low mass galaxies show higher specific star formation rates (SSFRs) than more massive ones and galaxies at higher redshifts are biased to higher SSFRs compared to the lower redshift sample. By visual inspection of the SDSS images, we classify galaxy morphology into disturbed or undisturbed. In the M-Z relation, we find a hint that morphologically disturbed BCGs appear to exhibit low metallicities and high SSFRs compared to undisturbed counterparts. We suggest that our results support downsizing galaxy formation scenario and star formation histories of BCGs are closely related with their morphologies.

THE ATACAMA COSMOLOGY TELESCOPE: PHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF SUNYAEV-ZEL'DOVICH EFFECT CLUSTERS ON THE CELESTIAL EQUATOR,

We present the optical and X-ray properties of 68 galaxy clusters selected via the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich Effect at 148 GHz by the Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT). Our sample, from an area of 504 square degrees centered on the celestial equator, is divided into two regions. The main region uses 270 square degrees of the ACT survey that overlaps with the co-added ugriz imaging from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) over Stripe 82 plus additional near-infrared pointed observations with the Apache Point Observatory 3.5-meter telescope. We confirm a total of 49 clusters to z~1.3, of which 22 (all at z>0.55) are new discoveries. For the second region the regular-depth SDSS imaging allows us to confirm 19 more clusters up to z~0.7, of which 10 systems are new. We present the optical richness, photometric redshifts, and separation between the SZ position and the brightest cluster galaxy (BCG). We find no significant offset between the cluster SZ centroid and BCG location and a weak correlation between optical richness and SZ-derived mass. We also present X-ray fluxes and luminosities from the ROSAT All Sky Survey which confirm that this is a massive sample. One of the newly discovered clusters, ACT-CL J0044.4+0113 at z=1.1 (photometric), has an integrated XMM-Newton X-ray temperature of kT_x=7.9+/-1.0 keV and combined mass of M_200a=8.2(-2.5,+3.3)x10^14 M_sun/h70 placing it among the most massive and X-ray-hot clusters known at redshifts beyond z=1. We also highlight the optically-rich cluster ACT-CL J2327.4-0204 (RCS2 2327) at z=0.705 (spectroscopic) as the most significant detection of the whole equatorial sample with a Chandra-derived mass of M_200a=1.9(-0.4,+0.6)x10^15 M_sun/h70, comparable to some of the most massive known clusters like "El Gordo" and the Bullet Cluster.

An investigation of Sloan Digital Sky Survey imaging data and multiband scaling relations of spiral galaxies

We have compiled a sample of 3041 spiral galaxies with multi-band gri imaging from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release 7 and available galaxy rotational velocities derived from HI line widths. We compare the data products provided through the SDSS imaging pipeline with our own photometry of the SDSS images, and use the velocities (V) as an independent metric to determine ideal galaxy sizes (R) and luminosities (L). Our radial and luminosity parameters improve upon the SDSS DR7 Petrosian radii and luminosities through the use of isophotal fits to the galaxy images. This improvement is gauged via VL and RV relations whose respective scatters are reduced by ~8% and ~30% compared to similar relations built with SDSS parameters. The tightest VRL relations are obtained with the i-band radius, R235i, measured at 23.5 mag/arcsec^-2, and the luminosity L235i, measured within R235i. Our VRL scaling relations compare well, both in scatter and slope, with similar studies (such comparisons however depend sensitively on the nature and size of the compared samples). The typical slopes, b, and observed scatters, sigma, of the i-band VL, RL and RV relations are bVL=0.27+/-0.01, bRL=0.41+/-0.01, bRV=1.52+/-0.07, and sigmaVL=0.074, sigmaRL=0.071, sigmaRV=0.154 dex. Similar results for the SDSS g and r bands are also provided. Smaller scatters may be achieved for more pruned samples. We also compute scaling relations in terms of the baryonic mass (stars + gas), Mbar, ranging from 10^8.7 Msol to 10^11.6 Msol. Our baryonic velocity-mass (VM) relation has slope 0.29+/-0.01 and a measured scatter sigma_meas = 0.076 dex. While the observed VL and VM relations have comparable scatter, the stellar and baryonic VM relations may be intrinsically tighter, and thus potentially more fundamental, than other VL relations of spiral galaxies.

Galaxy Zoo: Outreach and Science Hand in Hand

AbstractGalaxy Zoo (www.galaxyzoo.org) is familiar to many as a hugely successful public engagement project. Hundreds of thousands of members of the public have contributed to Galaxy Zoo which collects visual classifications of galaxies in Sloan Digital Sky Survey and Hubble Space Telescope images. Galaxy Zoo has inspired a suite of similar Citizen Science projects known as “The Zooniverse“ (www.zooniverse.org) which now has well over half a million participants. Galaxy Zoo has also shown itself, in a series of peer reviewed papers, to be a fantastic database for the study of galaxy evolution. In this invited talk I described how that public engagement via citizen science is not only an effective means of outreach from data intensive surveys, but if done right can and must also increase the scientific output of the survey.

Separating intrinsic alignment and galaxy-galaxy lensing

The coherent physical alignment of galaxies is an important systematic for gravitational lensing studies as well as a probe of the physical mechanisms involved in galaxy formation and evolution. We develop a formalism for treating this intrinsic alignment (IA) in the context of galaxy-galaxy lensing and present an improved method for measuring IA contamination, which can arise when sources physically associated with the lens are placed behind the lens due to photometric redshift scatter. We apply the technique to recent Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) measurements of Luminous Red Galaxy lenses and typical ( ∼ L*) source galaxies with photometric redshifts selected from the SDSS imaging data. Compared to previous measurements, this method has the advantage of being fully self-consistent in its treatment of the IA and lensing signals, solving for the two simultaneously. We find an IA signal consistent with zero, placing tight constraints on both the magnitude of the IA effect and its potential contamination to the lensing signal. While these constraints depend on source selection and redshift quality, the method can be applied to any measurement that uses photometric redshifts. We obtain a model-independent upper-limit of roughly 10% IA contamination for projected separations of rp ≈ 0.1–10 h−1Mpc. With more stringent photo-z cuts and reasonable assumptions about the physics of intrinsic alignments, this upper limit is reduced to 1–2%. These limits are well below the statistical error of the current lensing measurements. Our results suggest that IA will not present intractable challenges to the next generation of galaxy-galaxy lensing experiments, and the methods presented here should continue to aid in our understanding of alignment processes and in the removal of IA from the lensing signal.

Clustering of photometric luminous red galaxies - II. Cosmological implications from the baryon acoustic scale

A new determination of the sound horizon scale in angular coordinates is presented. It makes use of ~ 0.6 x 10^6 Luminous Red Galaxies, selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey imaging data, with photometric redshifts. The analysis covers a redshift interval that goes from z=0.5 to z=0.6. We find evidence of the Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO) signal at the ~ 2.3 sigma confidence level, with a value of theta_{BAO} (z=0.55) = (3.90 \pm 0.38) degrees, including systematic errors. To our understanding, this is the first direct measurement of the angular BAO scale in the galaxy distribution, and it is in agreement with previous BAO measurements. We also show how radial determinations of the BAO scale can break the degeneracy in the measurement of cosmological parameters when they are combined with BAO angular measurements. The result is also in good agreement with the WMAP7 best-fit cosmology. We obtain a value of w_0 = -1.03 \pm 0.16 for the equation of state parameter of the dark energy, Omega_M = 0.26 \pm 0.04 for the matter density, when the other parameters are fixed. We have also tested the sensitivity of current BAO measurements to a time varying dark energy equation of state, finding w_a = 0.06 \pm 0.22 if we fix all the other parameters to the WMAP7 best-fit cosmology.

Arecibo Legacy Fast ALFA H i data stacking - II. H i content of the host galaxies of active galactic nuclei

We use a stacking technique to measure the average H I content of a volume-limited sample of 1871 active galactic nucleus (AGN) host galaxies from a parent sample of galaxies selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey and GALEX imaging surveys with stellar masses greater than 10 10 Mand redshifts in the range 0.025 < z < 0.05. H I data are available from the Arecibo Legacy Fast ALFA (ALFALFA) survey. In previous work, we found that the H I gas fraction in galaxies correlates most strongly with the combination of optical/ultraviolet colour and stellar surface mass density. We therefore build a control sample of non-AGN matched to the AGN hosts in these two properties. We study trends in H I gas mass fraction (MH I/M� , where Mis the stellar mass) as a function of black hole accretion rate indicator L(O III)/MBH. We find no significant difference in H I content between AGN and control samples at all values of black hole accretion rate probed by the galaxies in our sample. This indicates that AGN do not influence the large-scale gaseous properties of galaxies in the local Universe. We have studied the variation in H I mass fraction with black hole accretion rate in the blue and red galaxy populations. In the blue population, the H I gas fraction is independent of accretion rate, indicating that accretion is not sensitive to the properties of the interstellar medium of the galaxy on large scales. However, in the red population accretion rate and gas fraction do correlate. The measured gas fractions in this population are not too different from the ones expected from a stellar mass-loss origin, implying that the fuel supply in the red AGN population could be a mixture of mass-loss from stars and gas present in discs.

Galaxy-galaxy mergers and close interactions have long been regarded as a viable mechanism for channeling gas toward the central supermassive black holes (SMBHs) of galaxies which are triggered as active galactic nuclei (AGNs). AGN pairs, in which the central SMBHs of a galaxy merger are both active, are expected to be common from such events. We conduct a systematic study of 1286 AGN pairs at z ~ 0.1 with line-of-sight velocity offsets dv < 600 km/s and projected separations r_p < 100 kpc, selected from the Seventh Data Release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). This AGN pair sample was drawn from 138,070 AGNs optically identified based on diagnostic emission line ratios and/or line widths. The fraction of AGN pairs with 5 kpc ~< r_p < 100 kpc among all spectroscopically selected AGNs at 0.02 < z < 0.16 is 3.6% after correcting for SDSS spectroscopic incompleteness; ~ 30% of these pairs show morphological tidal features in their SDSS images, and the fraction becomes >~ 80% for pairs with the brightest nuclei. Our sample increases the number of known AGN pairs on these scales by more than an order of magnitude. We present their AGN and host-galaxy star formation properties in a companion paper.

Angular correlation function of 1.5 million luminous red galaxies: clustering evolution and a search for baryon acoustic oscillations

We present the angular correlation function measured from photometric samples comprising 1562 800 luminous red galaxies (LRGs). Three LRG samples were extracted from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) imaging data, based on colour-cut selections at redshifts, z≈ 0.35, 0.55 and 0.7 as calibrated by the spectroscopic surveys, SDSS-LRG, 2dF-SDSS LRG and QSO (quasi-stellar object) (2SLAQ) and the AAΩ-LRG survey. The galaxy samples cover ≈7600 deg2 of sky, probing a total cosmic volume of ≈5.5 h−3 Gpc3. The small- and intermediate-scale correlation functions generally show significant deviations from a single power-law fit with a well-detected break at ≈1 h−1 Mpc, consistent with the transition scale between the one- and two-halo terms in halo occupation models. For galaxy separations 1–20 h−1 Mpc and at fixed luminosity, we see virtually no evolution of the clustering with redshift and the data are consistent with a simple high peaks biasing model where the comoving LRG space density is constant with z. At fixed z, the LRG clustering amplitude increases with luminosity in accordance with the simple high peaks model, with a typical LRG dark matter halo mass 1013–1014h−1 M⊙. For r < 1 h−1 Mpc, the evolution is slightly faster and the clustering decreases towards high redshift consistent with a virialized clustering model. However, assuming the halo occupation distribution (HOD) and Λ cold dark matter (ΛCDM) halo merger frameworks, ∼2–3 per cent/Gyr of the LRGs are required to merge in order to explain the small scales clustering evolution, consistent with previous results. At large scales, our result shows good agreement with the SDSS-LRG result of Eisenstein et al. but we find an apparent excess clustering signal beyond the baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO) scale. Angular power spectrum analyses of similar LRG samples also detect a similar apparent large-scale clustering excess but more data are required to check for this feature in independent galaxy data sets. Certainly, if the ΛCDM model were correct then we would have to conclude that this excess was caused by systematics at the level of Δw≈ 0.001–0.0015 in the photometric AAΩ-LRG sample.

The host galaxies of radio-loud active galactic nuclei: colour structure

We construct a sample of 3,516 radio-loud host galaxies of active galactic nuclei (AGN) from the optical Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and Faint Images of the Radio Sky at Twenty cm (FIRST). These have 1.4 GHz luminosities in the range 10E23-1025 WHz^{-1}, span redshifts 0.02<z<0.18, are brighter than r*_{petro}<17.77 mag and are constrained to `early-type' morphology in colour space (u*-r*>2.22 mag). Optical emission line ratios (at >3 sigma) are used to remove type 1 AGN and star-forming galaxies from the radio sample using BPT diagnostics. For comparison, we select a sample of 35,160 radio-quiet galaxies with the same r*-band magnitude-redshift distribution as the radio sample. We also create comparison radio and control samples derived by adding the NRAO VLA Sky Survey (NVSS) to quantify the effect of completeness on our results. We investigate the effective radii of the surface brightness profiles in the SDSS r and u bands in order to quantify any excess of blue colour in the inner region of radio galaxies. We define a ratio R=r_{e}(r)/r_{e}(u) and use maximum likelihood analysis to compare the average value of R and its intrinsic dispersion between both samples. R is larger for the radio-loud AGN sample as compared to its control counterpart, and we conclude that the two samples are not drawn from the same population at >99% significance. Given that star formation proceeds over a longer time than radio activity, the difference suggests that a subset of galaxies has the predisposition to become radio loud. We discuss host galaxy features that cause the presence of a radio-loud AGN to increase the scale size of a galaxy in red relative to blue light, including excess central blue emission, point-like blue emission from the AGN itself, and/or diffuse red emission. We favour an explanation that arises from the stellar rather than the AGN light.
