The aim of this research is three things, namely: First, to find out what factors cause the area of forest not to fall to the same as the area of forested area?; Second, find out what the government's attitude is regarding the use of forest areas as not being in accordance with its function? Third, find out whether forest areas that are not used optimally can be converted into functional areas? using descriptive and nomative research methods, library study data collection techniques, with qualitative descriptive analysis. The results of the analysis show that Firstly: The causes of differences in the size of forest areas and wooded areas occur due to the function of the forest area itself (in production forest areas and conservation forest areas) and due to human actions (in protected forest areas). Where in protected forest areas, some residents consider them to be forest areas that are on private land, there are different perceptions about customary forests; Second, the attitude that the provincial government needs to take is to revitalize forests according to their function d=as a priority option; and Third, however, there is the possibility of converting forest areas for other development activities.

Microplastics in rivers along an urban-rural gradient in an urban agglomeration: Correlation with land use, potential sources and pathways

Microplastics are ubiquitous and affect all environments, including rivers. In recent years the number of studies about microplastics in rivers has strongly increased. But still many questions exist regarding sources, pathways, and the role of land use patterns. In this study the relationship between microplastics abundance and anthropogenic factors (population density, urbanization, land use types), as well as the potential role of storm sewers as pathways in tributaries of the Wu River in Taichung, central Taiwan, were studied. Two river catchments of the Dali River were studied in greater detail to investigate the influence of land use on microplastics abundance along an urban-rural gradient, and to observe the change of microplastics abundance in the transition from rural to urban areas. Samples were taken from 41 different locations in urban and rural areas using a manta net with a mesh size of 0.3 mm. Results show abundances ranging from 0 pcs/m³ in unpopulated rural areas up to 230 pcs/m³ in densely populated urban centers, and are positively correlated with population density. Remarkably, a sharp increase in microplastics abundance was observed at the transition from rural to urban areas, which coincides with the appearance of storm sewers. Land use analysis revealed that microplastics abundance positively correlates with the size of industrial, residential and traffic areas in the catchment areas, and negatively correlates with the size of forest areas. Source areas for microplastics in the studied rivers are likely residential and commercial areas. Furthermore, the results of this study show that correlations between microplastics abundances and population density or land use patterns along urban-rural gradients are not trivial. Strength of correlations can depend on local factors or how well urban-rural gradients are developed. Absence of correlations need to be considered carefully, as existing correlations might be masked by the above-mentioned factors.

Is there more to trees than timber? Estimating the private amenity value of forests using a hedonic land model for combined agricultural properties

Forests offer a range of amenity values besides the production value of timber. We know from existing studies, that the trees' height and species affect the public's recreational values, but it is less clear how much the joy of owning a property with forest matters, and whether the joy depends on characteristics like tree height and species.In this paper, we estimate landowners' private amenity value of forests. We do this by estimating four hedonic land value models for different sizes of property. In the models, forests are described by the size of forest area with a canopy height above three meters, the size of forest area with a canopy height below three meters, mean canopy height, and the share of broadleaf forest.The value of an additional hectare of forest is predicted using the hedonic model and compared with the forest's expectation value based on accounting statistics for forest income, including hunting rents, discounted using an average real market interest rate of 1.7%. We find a difference of 6500–9900 EUR/ha between the estimated land value models and the production values for properties larger than 10 ha. We interpret this difference as the forest owner's willingness to pay for forest amenities in addition to the timber value. The results offer insight into the value of owning forests for the large majority of private forest owners who own small patches of land. They can be valuable in the design of land-use policies aiming to increase forest area and ecosystem service provision on private land that benefits both the public and the private owner.

What does the mandible say about wild boar: Ontogenetic development, sexual dimorphism and habitat preferences

Wild boar (Sus scrofa L.) is one of the most discussed game species, distributed across Europe, therefore the management of this species is considered important. This management should be based on data presented, population quality and preferences and craniometric dimensions show the development of the individual and its prosperity. A sample of 148 male and 153 female wild boar mandibles was studied to compare differences in craniometric measurements, especially to find out wild boar environmental demands and population trends. The width of the caput mandibulae and angle of the mandible showed significant difference between males and females. Measurements analysed with forest area size and other data also showed that larger craniometric dimensions were reached in hunting areas with at least 200 ha of forested area, which may be due to the wild boar’s need for safety and vegetative cover in the first months of piglet development with respect to its home range. The development of young wild boar is dependent on rest and shelter in the first months of life. A forest cover of at least 200 ha appears to be sufficient in this respect. Information on habitat preferences and individual development can lead to improvements in wild boar management.

Carbon sequestration in living biomass of Slovak forests: recent trends and future projection

Abstract The paper predicts development of forests in Slovakia from the perspective of carbon sequestration. Projection is based on actual trends of changes in forest area, age structure and tree species composition of forest stands managed according to forest management plans. Carbon balance in living biomass has been simulated until 2050 under two harvesting scenarios (based on planned and realized harvesting rates in reference period 2014–2019) with four possible combinations of fixed or changing tree species composition and size of forest area. Input data were stratified by tree species and 10-years wide age classes. A model simulating forest growth using yield tables and harvesting rates was developed and applied for prediction. Results indicate that the scenario based on realized harvesting would lead to a higher level of CO2 removals from atmosphere by living biomass in Slovak forests for the whole simulated period, despite their decrease from the current level ~ −4,000 kt CO2 to ~ −2,000 until 2040 and an increase to~ −2,800 kt CO2 in 2050. Conversely, scenario based on planned harvesting could result in a stronger decrease of CO2 removals, with the culmination in 2040 at ~ −200 kt CO2 followed by a slight increase to ~ −1,000 kt CO2 in 2050. The influences of changes in tree species composition and increasing forest area were significantly lower than effect of different harvesting rates. Results achieved by this study suggest that adjusting harvested volume (e.g., by decreasing harvesting rates or modifying rotation periods) could be the most effective tool to intensify CO2 removals by living biomass in Slovak forests in the upcoming decades.

Modelling of wireless sensor networks for detection land and forest fire hotspot

Indonesia located in South East Asia countries with tropical region, forest fires in Indonesia is one of big issue and disaster because it happens in almost of every year, this is because of some of region consist of peat land that high risk for fire especially in dry season. Riau Province is one of region that regularly incident of forest fire with affected the length and breadth of Indonesia. Propose development of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) for detection of land and forest fire hotspot in Indonesia as well as one of the main consents in this research, case location in Riau province is at one of the regions that high risk forest fire in dry season. WSNs technology used for ground sensor system to collect environmental data. Data training for fire hotspot detection is done in data center to determine and conclude of fire hotspot then potential to become big fire. The deployment of sensors located at several locations that has potential for fire incident, especially as data shown in previous case and forecast location with potential fire happen. Mathematical analysis is used in this case for modelling number of sensors required to deploy and the size of forest area. The design and development of WSNs give high impact and feasibility to overcome current issues of forest fire and fire hotspot detection in Indonesia. The development of this system used WSNs highly applicable for early warning and alert system for fire hotspot detection.

Understanding Sustainable Forest Management Certification in Slovakia: Forest Owners’ Perception of Expectations, Benefits and Problems

Forest certification as a voluntary verification tool has been providing an independent assessment of sustainable forestry practices and thus confidence in sustainability benchmarks for over 20 years. Using either the international or national approaches and initiatives, two main forest certification systems, PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification) and FSC (Forest Stewardship Council), have spread in a number of countries worldwide. The specifics of local conditions in the forestry sector have to be taken into account when implementing the certification context in a given country or a region. Apart from the natural conditions, institutional structure, or legislative framework, it is also the local and national stakeholders and their perception of this issue that provides the background for the implementation of the certification criteria. The main objective of this study is to examine the general understanding of the certification concept as an environmental, economic, and social tool, and to determine the incentives of forest owners in Slovakia for sustainable forest management (SFM) certification. In addition, the benefits and problems arising from participation in certification were identified and differences reflecting the ownership structure of forests, size of forest area, and participation in a particular certification programme were analysed. Results indicate that certified forest owners, unlike non-certified, demonstrated a high level of understanding of the SFM certification concept. Certified entities mainly consider forest certification as their commitment to environmental responsibility and a tool for improving external company image, promoting sustainable utilisation of forest resources, and improving forest management practices. The main benefits are linked to the possibility to demonstrate forest management practices, a better understanding of the forest management concept, and improvement of forest management practices. PEFC users perceive more benefits following from certification; the most important are those associated with non-economic values, while FSC-certified forest owners perceive mainly economic benefits connected to market penetration, increased sales volume, and potential price premiums. The key problems associated with certification relate to duties to ensure compliance with certification criteria by contractors and administrative difficulties. Respondents reported minimum price premiums for the sale of their certified timber. Additionally, the findings of the study pointed out that a nationally developed certification system can better recognise the roles and objectives of forest certification in the context of forest policy.

Forest fragments present shapes and sizes that become them more or less susceptible to external factors, which can be measured by means of ecological indexes. The aim of this research was to diagnose conservation status and to quantify forest fragments in part of the Brazilian Atlantic Forest. Forest fragments were mapped and landscape ecology metrics were calculated, including area size, fractal dimension index, and edge index. These three metrics were modeled using the Weibull-3P probabilistic function in order to quantify fragments in a specified range. A bivariate function also was applied relating the indexes with fragment area size. The diagnosis revealed that the study area is highly fragmented, since the forested area covers only 13.7% of the total area. About 89% of the forest fragments have area from 10 to 100 ha, whereas fragments larger than 100 ha totalize about 11%. The metrics allowed discriminating the forest fragments by their conservation status. This study suggests that smaller fragments should be managed as stepping stones to the larger ones. As conclusion, larger forest fragments present more complex shapes and high edge effect. Thus, smaller forest fragments present variability of shapes from simple up to the more complex ones, besides edge effect much more variable than the larger fragments. The frequency of fragments in relation to the studied variables follows a normal. This means that well-conserved forest fragments, that is, with biggest areas, lower edge effects, and more rounded shape, are the scantiest ones. Unmasking forest borderlines by an automatic delineation based on airborne laser scanner data

ABSTRACTThis study presents an automatic methodology based on airborne laser scanner (ALS) data, which allows the mapping of forests, using quantitative criteria typical of forest definitions, i.e. minimum threshold for the height of trees, canopy cover, forest area size, and width. Interactions between forest and other land uses are explored by the methodology for the definition of forest borderlines using an additional criterion; this criterion is the distance-discontinuity (DD), which establishes a minimum width (MW) for portions of territory categorized by land uses different from the forest. The proposed forest mapping approach introduces also a fuzzy algorithm to assess the canopy cover, thereby enhancing the positional accuracy in the delineation of the forest borderline. This methodology has a very flexible mapping approach with the potential to address the many forest definitions existing worldwide. The evaluation and the improvement of the methodology are particularly encouraged by its release as an open source tool.

Changes in the forest ecosystems in areas impacted by aridization in south-western Romania.

BackgroundIn the past few decades, global climate change has accentuated the intensification of aridization in South-Western Romania, with direct and indirect consequences on the quality of forest ecosystems. In addition to qualitative deterioration, the quantitative changes brought about by intensive anthropic deforestation have created the conditions for a decline in the size of forest areas on vast tracts of land. The paper aims to analyze the qualitative and quantitative changes in the forest ecosystems in South-Western Romania, changes due to the synergic context of the global climate changes and the anthropic pressures of the past three decades. In order to capture the evolution of aridization in the study area, specific aridization indexes have been calculated, such as the De Martonne index and the UNEP aridity index. 1990 and 2011 satellite images have been used in order to quantify the qualitative changes.ResultsThe results obtained indicated that, in the past two decades, the quality of the biomass declined as a result of the increase in the climatic aridity conditions (De Martonne si UNEP aridity index, indicating in the last decades, annual values under 15 mm/°C, and under 0.5 mm/mm, that means that the values situated under these thresholds, describe arid and semi-arid climate conditions). Also, the uncontrolled logging across vast surfaces caused the loss of forest ecosystems by 7% in the overall study area, during the last three decades.ConclusionsThe severe effects of aridization meant, first of all, a significant decline in the quality of the ecosystem services supplied by forests. In the absence of viable actions to correct the present situation, the extremely undesirable consequences of an ecological and social nature will arise in the near future.

Quantification of forest stock using remote sensing and gis

Forest stock is key information required in forest mensuration, forest utilization and forest management. The present study highlights the application of the state-of-the-art technology of satellite remote sensing, Geographical Information System (GIS) and Global Positioning System (GPS) in quantification of forest growing stock. The stratification of forest in to various forest cover types and structural canopy density classes and use of sampling procedures facilitate in obtaining the required information in the shortest time and cost effective manner. In general, the forest areas refer to natural stands of woody vegetation in which trees predominate. Forests are known to be one of the very important renewable natural resources which change with time and space. The direct benefits from forests are mainly timber and non-timber minor forest products. The list of indirect benefits is quite huge, including the amelioration of climate, soil and water conservation, biodiversity conservation, habitat for a variety of fauna, tourism and recreation, etc. Broadly, there are six major groups in h,dian forests, namely tropical moist forests, tropical dry forests, montane sub-tropical forests, montane temperate forests, sub-alpine forests and alpine forests. These have been further divided into 16 types, 46 sub-types and 221 ecologically stable formations (Champion and Seth, 1968). The information about the size of forest areas and the growing stock are the two important parameters of forest inventory. Forest inventory, therefore, makes an attempt to describe the quality and quantity of forests. It is undertaken at the national or state levels for knowing the location, extent, nature, condition and productive capacity of forests. The outputs are used for formulating the policies, plans/projects and monitoring purposes.
