Electromagnetic signatures of black hole clusters in the center of super-Eddington galaxies

Supermassive black holes (SMBHs) at the centers of active galaxies are fed by accretion disks that radiate from the infrared or optical to the X-ray bands. Several types of objects can orbit SMBHs, including massive stars, neutron stars, clouds from the broad- and narrow-line regions, and X-ray binaries. Isolated black holes with a stellar origin (BHs of ∼10 M⊙) should also be present in large numbers within the central parsec of the galaxies. These BHs are expected to form a cluster around the SMBH as a result of the enhanced star formation rate in the inner galactic region and the BH migration caused by gravitational dynamical friction. However, except for occasional microlensing effects on background stars or gravitational waves from binary BH mergers, the presence of a BH population is hard to verify. In this paper, we explore the possibility of detecting electromagnetic signatures of a central cluster of BHs when the accretion rate onto the central SMBH is greater than the Eddington rate. In these supercritical systems, the accretion disk launches powerful winds that interact with the objects orbiting the SMBH. Isolated BHs can capture matter from this dense wind, leading to the formation of small accretion disks around them. If jets are produced in these single microquasars, they could be sites of particle acceleration to relativistic energies. These particles in turn are expected to cool by various radiative processes. Therefore, the wind of the SMBH might illuminate the BHs through the production of both thermal and nonthermal radiation.

Probing Magnetic Fields in Young Supernova Remnants with IXPE

Synchrotron emission from the shocked regions in supernova remnants provides, through its polarization, crucial details about the magnetic field strength and orientation in these regions. This, in turn, provides information on particle acceleration in these shocks. Due to the rapid losses of the highest-energy relativistic electrons, X-ray polarization measurements allow for investigations of the magnetic field to be carried outvery close to the sites of particle acceleration. Measurements of both the geometry of the field and the levels of turbulence implied by the observed polarization degree thus provide unique insights into the conditions leading to efficient particle acceleration in fast shocks. The Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE) has carried out observations of multiple young SNRs, including Cas A, Tycho, SN 1006, and RX J1713.7−3946. In each, significant X-ray polarization detections provide measurements of magnetic field properties that show some common behavior but also considerable differences between these SNRs. Here, we provide a summary of results from IXPE studies of young SNRs, providing comparisons between the observed polarization and the physical properties of the remnants and their environments.

Enhanced particle acceleration in a pulsar wind interacting with a companion

Context. Pulsar winds have been shown to be preferred sites of particle acceleration and high-energy radiation. Numerous studies have been conducted to better characterize the general structure of such relativistic plasmas in isolated systems. However, many pulsars are found in binary systems and there are currently no ab initio models available that would include both the pulsar magnetosphere and the wind of the pulsar in interaction with a spherical companion. Aims. We investigate the interaction between a pulsar wind and a companion to probe the rearrangement of the pulsar wind, assess whether it leads to an enhancement of particle acceleration, and predict the high-energy radiative signature that stems from this interaction. We consider the regime where the companion is small enough to hold between two successive stripes of the wind. Methods. We performed two-dimensional (2D) equatorial particle-in-cell simulations of an inclined pulsar surrounded by a spherical, unmagnetized, perfectly conducting companion settled in its wind. Different runs correspond to different distances and sizes of the companion. Results. We find that the presence of the companion significantly alters the structure of the wind. When the companion lies beyond the fast magnetosonic point, a shock is established and the perturbations are advected in a cone behind the companion. We observe an enhancement of particle acceleration due to forced reconnection as the current sheet reaches the companion surface. Hence, high-energy synchrotron radiation is also amplified. The orbital light curves display two broad peaks reaching up to 14 times the high-energy pulsed flux emitted by an isolated pulsar magnetosphere. These effects increase with the growth of the companion size and with the decrease of the pulsar-companion separation. Conclusions. The present study suggests that a pulsar wind interacting with a companion induces a significant enhancement of high-energy radiation that takes the form of an orbital-modulated hollow cone of emission, which should be detectable by galactic-plane surveys, possibly with long-period radio transient counterparts.

X-ray Polarization of Blazars and Radio Galaxies Measured by the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer

X-ray polarization, which now can be measured by the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE), is a new probe of jets in the supermassive black hole systems of active galactic nuclei (AGNs). Here, we summarize IXPE observations of radio-loud AGNs that have been published thus far. Blazars with synchrotron spectral energy distributions (SEDs) that peak at X-ray energies are routinely detected. The degree of X-ray polarization is considerably higher than at longer wavelengths. This is readily explained by energy stratification of the emission regions when electrons lose energy via radiation as they propagate away from the sites of particle acceleration as predicted in shock models. However, the 2–8 keV polarization electric vector is not always aligned with the jet direction as one would expect unless the shock is oblique. Magnetic reconnection may provide an alternative explanation. The rotation of the polarization vector in Mrk421 suggests the presence of a helical magnetic field in the jet. In blazars with lower-frequency peaks and the radio galaxy Centaurus A, the non-detection of X-ray polarization by IXPE constrains the X-ray emission mechanism.

Discovery of a Shock-compressed Magnetic Field in the Northwestern Rim of the Young Supernova Remnant RX J1713.7–3946 with X-Ray Polarimetry

Supernova remnants (SNRs) provide insights into cosmic-ray acceleration and magnetic field dynamics at shock fronts. Recent X-ray polarimetric measurements by the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE) have revealed radial magnetic fields near particle acceleration sites in young SNRs, including Cassiopeia A, Tycho, and SN 1006. We present here the spatially resolved IXPE X-ray polarimetric observation of the northwestern rim of SNR RX J1713.7–3946. For the first time, our analysis shows that the magnetic field in the particle acceleration sites of this SNR is oriented tangentially with respect to the shock front. Because of the lack of precise Faraday rotation measurements in the radio band, this was not possible before. The average measured polarization degree (PD) of the synchrotron emission is 12.5% ± 3.3%, lower than the one measured by IXPE in SN 1006, comparable to the Tycho one, but notably higher than the one in Cassiopeia A. On subparsec scales, localized patches within RX J1713.7–3946 display a PD of up to 41.5% ± 9.5%. These results are compatible with a shock-compressed magnetic field. However, in order to explain the observed PD, either the presence of a radial net magnetic field upstream of the shock or partial reisotropization of the turbulence downstream by radial magnetohydrodynamical instabilities can be invoked. From comparison of PD and magnetic field distribution with γ-rays and 12CO data, our results provide new inputs in favor of a leptonic origin of the γ-ray emission.

X-ray emission from large scale jets of AGNs at high redshifts

The limited angular resolution of the existing telescopes, operating in radio, optical and X-ray wavebands, hinder the study on multi-spectral component (MSC) emissions from the large scale jet of AGNs. This is particularly strenuous for the sources located at high redshifts. Though a few of them were resolved in radio-optical wavebands, their X-ray counterparts have been rarely discovered. This poses a bigger challenge in understanding their emission mechanism. At high redshifts, the X-ray emission from the large scale jets are generally interpreted as inverse-Compton scattering of cosmic microwave background photons (IC/CMB), due to the increase in CMB photon density. However, recent Fermi γ-ray flux upper limit estimates on two high redshift (z>3.5) AGN jets (J1510+5702 and J1421-0643), question the validity of the IC/CMB model. Here, we propose a model by considering the advection of electrons from the sites of particle acceleration (Rahman et al., 2022), to interpret the MSC emission from these sources. We show that observed radio/optical/X-ray emissions can be explained by the synchrotron emission from the advected and accelerated electron distribution. We also show that the IC/CMB spectrum of this composite electron distribution satisfies the constraints drawn from Fermi observations.

Regions of Suppressed Diffusion around Supernova Remnants?

The recent discovery of the so-called TeV halos has attracted much attention. The morphology of the emission requires that the region is characterized by severe suppression of the diffusion coefficient. This finding raises many questions as to its origin: (1) is the suppressed diffusion to be attributed to instabilities induced by the same radiating particles? (2) or does it actually show that the diffusion coefficient is small throughout the disk of the Galaxy? In both cases, one would expect that the surroundings of supernova remnants (SNRs) should also show evidence of a reduced diffusion coefficient since most remnants are located in the disk and are expected to be sites of effective particle acceleration. Should we expect the existence of regions of extended γ-ray emission from these regions as well? Here, we investigate the transport of cosmic rays (CRs) that have escaped from SNRs in order to assess the viability of the idea of having a cocoon of suppressed diffusion around them. A comparison of our results with the γ-ray emission from the regions around HB9 and W28 does not provide solid evidence of reduced diffusivity. However, if indeed the phenomenon of reduced diffusivity occurs around SNRs surrounded by molecular clouds, our calculations show that the effects on the grammage of Galactic CRs can be significant.

ALMA Confirmation of Millimeter Time Variability in the Gamma-Ray Detected Seyfert Galaxy GRS 1734-292

GRS 1734-292 is a radio-quiet galaxy, exhibiting neither intense starburst nor jet activities. However, Fermi-LAT detected this object in the GeV band. The origin of nonthermal activity in this Seyfert galaxy is an intriguing question. We report Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array observations of GRS 1734-292 at frequencies of 97.5, 145, and 225 GHz. These observations confirmed the millimeter excess within the central ⪅100 pc region and its time variability based on two separate observations conducted 4 days apart. The timescale of variability aligns with the light-crossing time for a compact source smaller than <100 Schwarzschild radius. If we take into account the power-law synchrotron emission originating from the corona (i.e., the hot plasma located above the accretion disk), the millimeter spectrum indicates the coronal magnetic field of ≈10 G and the size of ≈10 Schwarzschild radius. An alternative explanation for this millimeter emission could be synchrotron and free–free emission from disk winds (i.e., fast wide-opening angle outflows from the disk) with the size of ≈10 pc, although it may be difficult to explain the fast variability. Future millimeter observations with higher resolution (<0.″01) will enable the differentiation between these two scenarios. Such observations will provide insights into the acceleration sites of high-energy particles at the core of active galactic nuclei.

The Case of the Missing Very High-energy Gamma-Ray Bursts: A Retrospective Study of Swift Gamma-Ray Bursts with Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes

Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are particle acceleration sites that can emit photons in the very high-energy (VHE) domain through nonthermal processes. From 2004 until 2018, the current generation of Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes (IACTs) did not detect any GRB in the VHE domain. However, from 2018 to 2020, five detections were reported. In this work, we try to solve the case of the missing VHE GBRs prior to 2018. We aim to identify GRBs that might have eluded VHE detection in past years by the H.E.S.S., MAGIC, and VERITAS IACTs. To do so, we study GRBs with known redshift detected by Swift from 2004 until June 2022. We first identify all GRBs that could have been observed by these IACTs since 2004, considering observation conditions and visibility constraints. We assume a relation between the X-rays and the VHE gamma rays based on the VHE GRBs detected to date and combine this with the redshift measurements, instrument response information, and observation conditions to predict the observed VHE gamma-ray flux from the Swift X-Ray Telescope measurements. We report findings on 12 bright low-redshift GRBs that we identify as most likely to have been detected in the VHE domain by current IACTs. The rate of IACT-detectable GRBs with ideal observation conditions is <1 VHE GRB per year with the current configuration. With its lower energy threshold and higher sensitivity, this rate increases to ∼4 VHE GRBs per year with the Cherenkov Telescope Array.

Inverse Compton Emission and Cooling of Relativistic Particles Accelerated at Shear Boundary Layers in Relativistic Jets

Both observational evidence and theoretical considerations from magnetohydrodynamic simulations of jets suggest that the relativistic jets of active galactic nuclei (AGN) are radially stratified, with a fast inner spine surrounded by a slower-moving outer sheath. The resulting relativistic shear layers are a prime candidate for the site of relativistic particle acceleration in the jets of AGNs and gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). In this article, we present outcomes of particle-in-cell simulations of magnetic-field generation and particle acceleration in the relativistic shear boundary layers (SBLs) of jets in AGNs and GRBs. We investigate the effects of inverse Compton cooling on relativistic particles that are accelerated in the SBLs of relativistic jets, including the self-consistent calculation of the radiation spectrum produced by inverse Compton scattering of relativistic electrons in an isotropic external soft photon field. We find that the Compton cooling can be substantial, depending on the characteristic energy (blackbody temperature and energy density) of the external radiation field. The produced Compton emission is highly anisotropic and more strongly beamed along the jet direction than the characteristic 1/Γ pattern expected from intrinsically isotropic emission in the comoving frame of an emission region moving along the jet with a bulk Lorentz factor Γ. We suggest that this may resolve the long-standing problem of the Doppler factor crisis.

An X-rays-to-radio investigation of the nuclear polarization from the radio-galaxy Centaurus A

ABSTRACT Centaurus A is one of the closest radio galaxies to Earth. Its proximity allowed us to extensively study its active galactic nucleus but the core emission mechanism remains elusive because of local strong dust and gas obscuration. The capability of polarimetry to shave-off contaminating emission has been exploited without success in the near-infrared by previous studies but the very recent measurement of the 2–8 keV polarization by the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE) brought the question back to the fore. To determine what is the prevalent photon generation mechanism to the multiwavelength emission from the core of Centaurus A, we retrieved from the archives the panchromatic polarization measurements of the central compact component. We built the total and polarized flux spectral energy distributions of the core and demonstrated that synchrotron self-Compton models nicely fit the polarized flux from the radio to the X-ray band. The linear polarization of the synchrotron continuum is perpendicular to the jet radio axis from the optical to the radio band, and parallel to it at higher energies. The observed smooth rotation of the polarization angle in the ultraviolet band is attributed to synchrotron emission from regions that are getting closer to the particle acceleration site, where the orientation of the jet’s magnetic fields become perpendicular to the jet axis. This phenomenon support the shock acceleration mechanism for particle acceleration in Centaurus A, in line with IXPE observations of several high-synchrotron peak blazars.

Numerical simulations of relativistic jets

In this paper, we review recent and ongoing work by our group on numerical simulations of relativistic jets. Relativistic outflows in astrophysics are related to dilute, high energy plasmas, with physical conditions out of the reach of current laboratory capabilities. Simulations are thus imperative for the study of these objects. We present a number of such scenarios that have been studied by our group at the Universitat de València. In particular, we have focused on the evolution of extragalactic outflows through galactic and intergalactic environments, deceleration by interaction with stars or clouds or the propagation of jets in X-ray binaries and interaction with stellar winds from massive companions. All also share their role as particle acceleration sites and production of non-thermal radiation throughout the electromagnetic spectrum. Therefore, our work is not only aimed at understanding the impact of outflows on their environments and thus their role in galaxy and cluster evolution, but also the nature and capabilities of these sites as generators of high- and very-high-energy radiation and cosmic rays.

Evidence of Electron Acceleration via Nonlinear Resonant Interactions with Whistler-mode Waves at Foreshock Transients

Shock waves are sites of intense plasma heating and charged particle acceleration. In collisionless solar wind plasmas, such acceleration is attributed to shock drift or Fermi acceleration but also to wave–particle resonant interactions. We examine the latter for the case of electrons interacting with one of the most commonly observed wave modes in shock environments, the whistler mode. Such waves are particularly intense in dynamic, localized regions upstream of shocks, arising from the kinetic interaction of the shock with solar wind discontinuities. These regions, known as foreshock transients, are also sites of significant electron acceleration by mechanisms not fully understood. Using in situ observations of such transients in the Earth’s foreshock, we demonstrate that intense whistler-mode waves can resonate nonlinearly with >25 eV solar wind electrons and accelerate them to ∼100–500 eV. This acceleration is mostly effective for the 50–250 eV energy range, where the accelerated electron population exhibits a characteristic butterfly pitch-angle distribution consistent with theoretical predictions. Such nonlinear resonant acceleration is very fast, implying that this mechanism may be important for injecting suprathermal electrons of solar wind origin into the shock region, where they can undergo further, efficient shock-drift acceleration to even higher energies.

X-Ray Polarimetry Reveals the Magnetic-field Topology on Sub-parsec Scales in Tycho’s Supernova Remnant

Supernova remnants are commonly considered to produce most of the Galactic cosmic rays via diffusive shock acceleration. However, many questions regarding the physical conditions at shock fronts, such as the magnetic-field morphology close to the particle acceleration sites, remain open. Here we report the detection of a localized polarization signal from some synchrotron X-ray emitting regions of Tycho’s supernova remnant made by the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer. The derived degree of polarization of the X-ray synchrotron emission is 9% ± 2% averaged over the whole remnant, and 12% ± 2% at the rim, higher than the value of polarization of 7%–8% observed in the radio band. In the west region, the degree of polarization is 23% ± 4%. The degree of X-ray polarization in Tycho is higher than for Cassiopeia A, suggesting a more ordered magnetic field or a larger maximum turbulence scale. The measured tangential direction of polarization corresponds to the radial magnetic field, and is consistent with that observed in the radio band. These results are compatible with the expectation of turbulence produced by an anisotropic cascade of a radial magnetic field near the shock, where we derive a magnetic-field amplification factor of 3.4 ± 0.3. The fact that this value is significantly smaller than those expected from acceleration models is indicative of highly anisotropic magnetic-field turbulence, or that the emitting electrons either favor regions of lower turbulence, or accumulate close to where the orientation of the magnetic field is preferentially radially oriented due to hydrodynamical instabilities.

Observations of Magnetic Reconnection and Particle Acceleration Locations in Solar Coronal Jets

We present a multiwavelength analysis of two flare-related jets on 2014 November 13, using data from the Solar Dynamics Observatory/Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (SDO/AIA), the Reuven High Energy Solar Spectroscopic Imager (RHESSI), the Hinode/X-ray Telescope (XRT), and the Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS). Unlike most coronal jets, where hard X-ray (HXR) emissions are usually observed near the jet base, in these events HXR emissions are found at several locations, including in the corona. We carry out the first differential emission measure analysis that combines both AIA (and XRT, when available) bandpass filter data and RHESSI HXR measurements for coronal jets, and obtain self-consistent results across a wide temperature range and into nonthermal energies. In both events, hot plasma first appears at the jet base, but as the base plasma gradually cools, hot plasma also appears near the jet top. Moreover, nonthermal electrons, while only mildly energetic, are found in multiple HXR locations and contain large amounts of total energy. In particular, the energetic electrons that produce the HXR sources at the jet top are accelerated near the top location, rather than traveling from a reconnection site at the jet base. This means that there is more than one particle acceleration site in each event. Jet velocities are consistent with previous studies, including the upward and downward velocities around ∼200 km s−1 and ∼100 km s−1, respectively, and fast outflows of 400–700 km s−1. We also examine the energy partition in the later event, and find that the nonthermal energy in the accelerated electrons is most significant compared to the other energy forms considered. We discuss the interpretations and provide constraints on the mechanisms for coronal jet formation.

A numerical study of the interplay between Fermi acceleration mechanisms in radio lobes of FR-II radio galaxies

Context. Radio-loud active galactic nuclei (AGNs) are thought to possess various sites of particle acceleration, which gives rise to the observed nonthermal spectra. Stochastic turbulent acceleration (STA) and diffusive shock acceleration (DSA) are commonly cited as potential sources of high-energy particles in weakly magnetized environments. Together, these acceleration processes and various radiative losses determine the emission characteristics of these extragalactic radio sources. Aims. The purpose of this research is to investigate the dynamical interplay between the STA and DSA in the radio lobes of FR-II radio galaxies, as well as the manner in which these acceleration mechanisms, along with a variety of radiative losses, collectively shape the emission features seen in these extragalactic sources. Methods. A phenomenologically motivated model of STA is considered and subsequently employed on a magnetohydrodynamically simulated radio lobe through a novel hybrid Eulerian-Lagrangian framework. Results. STA gives rise to a curved particle spectrum that is morphologically different from the usual shock-accelerated spectrum. As a consequence of this structural difference in the underlying particle energy spectrum, various multiwavelength features arise in the spectral energy distribution of the radio lobe. Additionally, we observe enhanced diffuse X-ray emission from radio lobes for cases where STA is taken into account in addition to DSA.

Effects of Magnetic Shear and Thermodynamic Asymmetry on Spontaneous Magnetohydrodynamic Reconnection

The spontaneous evolution of magnetic reconnection in generalized situations (with thermodynamic asymmetry regarding the current sheet and magnetic shear) is investigated using a two-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic simulation. We focus on the asymptotic state of temporal evolution, i.e., the self-similarly expanding phase. (1) A long fast-mode shock is generated in front of the shorter plasmoid as in the shear-less thermodynamically asymmetric case; however, the sheared magnetic component weakens the shock. This fast shock may work as a particle acceleration site. (2) The shorter plasmoid-side plasma infiltrates the longer plasmoid across the current sheet. Then, the plasmas from both sides of the current sheet coexist on the same magnetic field lines in the longer plasmoid. This may result in efficient plasma mixing. (3) The thermodynamic asymmetry and magnetic shear drastically decrease the reconnection rate in many orders of magnitude.

Spatially resolved study of the SS 433/W 50 west region with Chandra: X-ray structure and spectral variation of non-thermal emission

AbstractThe X-ray binary SS 433, embedded in the W 50 nebula (or supernova remnant W 50), shows bipolar jets that are ejected with mildly relativistic velocities and which extend toward the east and west out to scales of tens of parsecs. Previous X-ray observations revealed twin lobes along the jet precession axis that contain compact bright knots dominated by synchrotron radiation, which provide evidence of electron acceleration in this system. Particle acceleration in this system is substantiated by the recently detected gamma rays with energies up to at least 25 TeV. To elucidate the origin of the knots and particle acceleration sites in SS 433/W 50 further, we report here on detailed, spatially resolved X-ray spectroscopy of its western lobe with Chandra. We detect synchrotron emission along the jet precession axis, as well as optically thin thermal emission that is more spatially extended. Between the two previously known knots, w1 and w2, we discover another synchrotron knot, which we call w1.5. We find no significant synchrotron emission between SS 433 and the innermost X-ray knot (w1), suggesting that electrons only begin to be accelerated at w1. The X-ray spectra become gradually steeper from w1 to w2, and then rapidly so immediately outside of w2. Through comparison with a model taking into account electron transport and cooling along the jet, this result indicates that the magnetic field in w2 is substantially enhanced, which also explains its brightness. We discuss possible origins of the enhanced magnetic field of w2 as well as scenarios to explain the other two knots.

Nonthermal radiation from the central region of super-accreting active galactic nuclei

Context. The radio emission mechanism in active galactic nuclei (AGNs) with high accretion rates is unclear. It has been suggested that low-power jets may explain the observed radiation at subparsec scales. The mechanisms for jet formation at super-Eddington rates, however, are not well understood. On the same scale, clouds from the broad-line region (BLR) propagating with supersonic velocities in the wind launched by the accretion disk may lead to the production of nonthermal radiation. Aims. We aim to characterize the nonthermal emission produced by the propagation of clouds through the wind of the accretion disk in super-accreting AGNs, and to estimate the relevance of such a contribution to the radio band of the electromagnetic spectrum. Methods. We determined the conditions under which the BLR clouds are not destroyed by shocks or hydrodynamic instabilities when immersed in the powerful wind of the accretion disk. These clouds form bowshocks which are suitable sites for particle acceleration. We developed a semianalytical model to calculate the distribution of relativistic particles in these bowshocks and the associated spectral energy distribution (SED) of the emitted radiation. Results. For typical parameters of super-accreting AGNs, we find that the cloud-wind interactions can produce nonthermal emission from radio up to a few tens of TeV, with slight absorption effects, if the processes occur outside the wind photosphere. Conclusions. Radio emission in AGNs without jets can be explained if the accretion rate is super-Eddington and if there is a BLR at subparsec scales around the central black hole. The accretion rate must not be extremely high so most of the clouds orbit outside of the wind photosphere and the radiation can escape to the observer. Instabilities in the disk wind, which have previously been reported in numerical simulations, generate clumps that increase the filling factor of the overdensities in the BLR and enhance the emitted radiation.

The Curious Case of the “Heartworm” Nebula

The curious Galactic features near G357.2−0.2 were observed with the MeerKAT radio interferometer array in the UHF and L bands (0.56–1.68 GHz). There are two possibly related features: a newly identified faint heart-shaped partial shell (the “heart”), and a series of previously known but now much better imaged narrow, curved features (the “worm”) interior to the heart. Polarized emission suggests that much of the emission is nonthermal and is embedded in a dense plasma. The filaments of the worm appear to be magnetic structures powered by embedded knots that are sites of particle acceleration. The morphology of the worm broadly resembles some known pulsar wind nebulae (PWNe) but there is no known pulsar or PWN which could be powering this structure. We also present eROSITA observations of the field; no part of the nebula is detected in X-rays, but the current limits do not preclude the existence of a pulsar/PWN of intermediate spin-down luminosity.
