Generation of Schrödinger Cat States in a Hybrid Cavity Optomechanical System.

We present an alternative scheme to achieve Schrödinger cat states in a strong coupling hybrid cavity optomechanical system. Under the single-photon strong-coupling regime, the interaction between the atom-cavity-oscillator system can induce the mesoscopic mechanical oscillator to Schrödinger cat states. Comparing to previous schemes, the proposed proposal consider the second order approximation on the Lamb-Dicke parameter, which is more universal in the experiment. Numerical simulations confirm the validity of our derivation.

Fast and Ultrasensitive Electrometer Operating at the Single-Photon Level

We demonstrate fast and ultrasensitive charge detection with a cavity-embedded Cooper pair transistor (cCPT) via dispersive readout of its Josephson inductance. We report a minimum charge sensitivity of $14$ $\mu e/\sqrt{\mathrm{Hz}}$ with a detection bandwidth on the order of $1$ MHz using $16$ attowatts of power, corresponding to the single-photon level of the cavity. In addition, our measured sensitivities are within a factor of $5$ of the quantum limit for this device. The single-photon-level sensitivity of the cCPT is comparable to that of the rf-SET, which typically operates using picowatts of power corresponding to hundreds of thousands of photons in its tank circuit. Our results support the feasibility of using the cCPT to mediate an optomechanical interaction that reaches the single-photon strong coupling regime.

Quantum simulation of a three-mode optomechanical system based on the Fredkin-type interaction

The realization of multimode optomechanical interactions in the single-photon strong-coupling regime is a desired task in cavity optomechanics, but it remains a challenge in realistic physical systems. In this work, we propose a reliable scheme to simulate a three-mode optomechanical system working in the single-photon strong-coupling regime based on the Fredkin-type interaction. This is achieved by utilizing two strong drivings to the two exchangly-coupled modes in the Fredkin-type coupling involving one optical mode and two mechanical-like modes. As an application of this enhanced three-mode nonlinear optomechanical coupling, we show how to generate entangled-cat states of the mechanical-like modes using the conditional displacement mechanism. The quantum coherence effects in the generated states are investigated by calculating two-mode joint Wigner function and quantum entanglement. The influence of the dissipation effect on the state generation is considered in the open-system case.

Two-photon blockade generated and enhanced by mechanical squeezing

Photon blockade is an important quantum nonlinear phenomenon in cavity optomechanics. Here, we investigate the two-photon blockade effect by exploiting the mechanical squeezing. This squeezing can enhance the optomechanical-coupling strength into the single-photon strong-coupling regime. With strong coupling, we find the photon blockade effects can be generated and enhanced, and the region where the two-photon blockade occurs can be widened. Finally, we study the transition between photon-induced tunneling and blockade.

Can Macroscopic Objects Entanglement and Microscopic Objects Entanglement Be Entangled Simultaneously?

In this paper, we propose a simple method to simultaneously generate the entanglement between macroscopic objects (mechanical oscillators) and entanglement between microscopic objects (photons) based on a coupled cavity-optomechanical system. We show that when the cavity-optomechanical system works in the single-photon strong-coupling regime and in the deep quantum regime, the radiation pressure of a photon which is created by the atom-cavity interaction, can directly induce these joint entangled states. Thus, no measurement on this system is required. Numerical simulation shows that the fidelity of the prepared joint entangled states can reach 0.954.

Sideband-resolved resonator electromechanics based on a nonlinear Josephson inductance probed on the single-photon level

Light-matter interaction in optomechanical systems is the foundation for ultra-sensitive detection schemes as well as the generation of phononic and photonic quantum states. Electromechanical systems realize this optomechanical interaction in the microwave regime. In this context, capacitive coupling arrangements demonstrated interaction rates of up to 280 Hz. Complementary, early proposals and experiments suggest that inductive coupling schemes are tunable and have the potential to reach the single-photon strong-coupling regime. Here, we follow the latter approach by integrating a partly suspended superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) into a microwave resonator. The mechanical displacement translates into a time varying flux in the SQUID loop, thereby providing an inductive electromechanical coupling. We demonstrate a sideband-resolved electromechanical system with a tunable vacuum coupling rate of up to 1.62 kHz, realizing sub-aN Hz−1/2 force sensitivities. The presented inductive coupling scheme shows the high potential of SQUID-based electromechanics for targeting the full wealth of the intrinsically nonlinear optomechanics Hamiltonian.

Synthesizing multi-phonon quantum superposition states using flux-mediated three-body interactions with superconducting qubits

Massive mechanical resonators operating at the quantum scale can enable a large variety of applications in quantum technologies as well as fundamental tests of quantum theory. Of crucial importance in that direction is both their integrability into state-of-the-art quantum platforms as well as the ability to prepare them in generic quantum states using well-controlled high-fidelity operations. Here, we propose a scheme for controlling a radio-frequency mechanical resonator at the quantum scale using two superconducting transmon qubits that can be integrated on the same chip. Specifically, we consider two qubits coupled via a capacitor in parallel to a superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID), which has a suspended mechanical beam embedded in one of its arms. Following a theoretical analysis of the quantum system, we find that this configuration, in combination with an in-plane magnetic field, can give rise to a tuneable three-body interaction in the single-photon strong-coupling regime, while enabling suppression of the stray qubit-qubit coupling. Using state-of-the-art parameters and qubit operations at single-excitation levels, we numerically demonstrate the possibility of ground-state cooling as well as high-fidelity preparation of mechanical quantum states and qubit-phonon entanglement, i.e. states having negative Wigner functions and obeying non-classical correlations. Our work significantly extends the quantum control toolbox of radio-frequency mechanical resonators and may serve as a promising architecture for integrating such mechanical elements with transmon-based quantum processors.

Quantum signatures in quadratic optomechanics

We analyze quantum effects occurring in optomechanical systems where the coupling between an optical mode and a mechanical mode is quadratic in displacement (membrane-in-the-middle geometry). We show that it is possible to observe quantum effects in these systems without achieving the single-photon strong coupling regime. We find that zero-point energy causes a mechanical frequency shift, and we propose an experimental way to measure it. Further, we show that it is possible to determine the phonon statistics from the cavity transmission, and propose a way to infer the resonator's temperature based on this feature. For completeness, we revisit the case of an isolated system and show that different types of mechanical quantum states can be created, depending on the initial cavity state. In this situation, mechanical motion undergoes collapse and revivals, and we compute the collapse and revival times, as well as the degree of squeezing.

Dynamic Manipulation of Single-Photon Transport along a Waveguide by Dipole-Coupled Two-Level Atoms in a Quadratic Optomechanical Cavity

Single-photon transport along a one-dimensional waveguide side coupled to a quadratic optomechanical cavity embedded in two two-level atoms with dipole-dipole interaction (DDI) are explored theoretically. The transmission and reflection amplitudes are derived using a real-space approach. The effects of the optomechanical coupling strength, the DDI, atom-cavity detuning, and atomic dissipation on the single-photon transport properties are analyzed. In single-photon strong-coupling regime, vacuum Rabi-splitting and electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT)-like transmission spectra are observed. It is found that the DDI can shift the reflected resonant points, change the distance and the minima of the two vacuum Rabi-splitting dips, and modify the EIT-like spectra. Therefore, single-photon transport can be well controlled by such a hybrid atom-optomechanical system.

Integrated Optomechanical Arrays of Two High Reflectivity SiN Membranes.

Multielement cavity optomechanics constitutes a direction to observe novel effects with mechanical resonators. Several exciting ideas include superradiance, increased optomechanical coupling, and quantum effects between distinct mechanical modes among others. Realizing these experiments has so far been difficult, because of the need for extremely precise positioning of the elements relative to one another due to the high-reflectivity required for each element. Here we overcome this challenge and present the fabrication of monolithic arrays of two highly reflective mechanical resonators in a single chip. We characterize the optical spectra and losses of these 200 μm long Fabry-Pérot interferometers, measuring finesse values of up to 220. In addition, we observe an enhancement of the coupling rate between the cavity field and the mechanical center-of-mass mode compared to the single membrane case. Further enhancements in coupling with these devices are predicted, potentially reaching the single-photon strong coupling regime, giving these integrated structures an exciting prospect for future multimode quantum experiments.

Quantum nondemolition measurement of mechanical motion quanta

The fields of optomechanics and electromechanics have facilitated numerous advances in the areas of precision measurement and sensing, ultimately driving the studies of mechanical systems into the quantum regime. To date, however, the quantization of the mechanical motion and the associated quantum jumps between phonon states remains elusive. For optomechanical systems, the coupling to the environment was shown to make the detection of the mechanical mode occupation difficult, typically requiring the single-photon strong-coupling regime. Here, we propose and analyse an electromechanical setup, which allows us to overcome this limitation and resolve the energy levels of a mechanical oscillator. We found that the heating of the membrane, caused by the interaction with the environment and unwanted couplings, can be suppressed for carefully designed electromechanical systems. The results suggest that phonon number measurement is within reach for modern electromechanical setups.

Reaching the optomechanical strong-coupling regime with a single atom in a cavity

A major goal within the field of optomechanics is to achieve the single-photon strong coupling regime, wherein even a mechanical displacement as small as the zero-point uncertainty is enough to shift an optical cavity resonance by more than its linewidth. This goal is difficult, however, due to the small zero-point motion of conventional mechanical systems. Here, we show that an atom trapped in and coupled to a cavity constitutes an attractive platform for realizing this regime. In particular, while many experiments focus on achieving strong coupling between a photon and the atomic internal degree of freedom, this same resource also naturally enables one to obtain optomechanical strong coupling, in combination with the low mass of an atom and the isolation of its motion from a thermal environment. As an example, we show that optomechanically-induced photon blockade can be realized in realistic setups, and provide signatures of how this effect can be distinguished from the conventional Jaynes-Cummings blockade associated with the two-level nature of the atomic transition.

Enhanced quadratic nonlinearity with parametric amplifications

Realization of quantum nonlinearity in quadratic optomechanics, including optical and mechanical nonlinearity at the single-photon level, is crucial to explore extraordinary quantum features. Here we investigate an exponential enhancement of quadratic optomechanical interaction via parametric amplifications. The parametric process can form an in-phase amplified quadrature, and the rate of coupling to the in-phase quadrature will be exponentially increased even to the single-photon strong-coupling regime. Concretely, to achieve the optical nonlinearity mediated by the quadratic optomechanical interaction, we can employ a mechanical parametric process, and the in-phase mechanical quadrature can strongly couple to the cavity mode, leading to an enhanced optical nonlinearity such as a photon blockade. Similarly, via employing the optical parametric process, the in-phase optical quadrature can also effectively mediate the quadratic interaction, leading to an enhanced mechanical nonlinearity such as mechanical squeezing, bi-excitation exchange interaction and feasibility of quantum non-demolition detection of mechanical motion. However, the parametric process can also enlarge the noise, and a squeezing vacuum with the phase matching condition should be introduced to suppress the same.

Cavity optomechanics in a levitated helium drop

We describe a proposal for a new type of optomechanical system based on a drop of liquid helium that is magnetically levitated in vacuum. In the proposed device, the drop would serve three roles: its optical whispering gallery modes would provide the optical cavity, its surface vibrations would constitute the mechanical element, and evaporation of He atoms from its surface would provide continuous refrigeration. We analyze the feasibility of such a system in light of previous experimental demonstrations of its essential components: magnetic levitation of mm-scale and cm-scale drops of liquid He, evaporative cooling of He droplets in vacuum, and coupling to high-quality optical whispering gallery modes in a wide range of liquids. We find that the combination of these features could result in a device that approaches the single-photon strong coupling regime, due to the high optical quality factors attainable at low temperatures. Moreover, the system offers a unique opportunity to use optical techniques to study the motion of a superfluid that is freely levitating in vacuum (in the case of $^{4}\mathrm {He}$). Alternatively, for a normal fluid drop of $^3 \mathrm{He}$, we propose to exploit the coupling between the drop's rotations and vibrations to perform quantum non-demolition measurements of angular momentum.

Single-photon transport through a waveguide coupling to a quadratic optomechanical system

We study the coherent transport of a single photon, which propagates in a one-dimensional waveguide and is scattered by a quadratic optomechanical system. Our approach, which is based on the Lippmann-Schwinger equation, gives an analytical solution to describe the single-photon transmission and reflection properties. We analyze the transport spectra and find they are not only related to the optomechanical system's energy-level structure, but also dependent on the optomechanical system's inherent parameters. For the existence of atomic degrees of freedom, we get a Rabi-splitting-like or an electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT)-like spectrum, depending on the atom-cavity coupling strength. Here, we focus on the single-photon strong-coupling regime so that single-quantum effects could be seen.

Strong and tunable couplings in flux-mediated optomechanics

We investigate superconducting interference device (SQUID) with two asymmetric Josephson junctions coupled to a mechanical resonator embedded in the loop of the SQUID. We quantize this system in the case when the frequency of the mechanical resonator is much lower than the cavity frequency of the SQUID and in the case when they are comparable. In the first case, the radiation pressure and cross-Kerr type interactions arise and are modified by asymmetry. Cross-Kerr type coupling is the leading term at the extremum points where radiation pressure is zero. In the second case, the main interaction is single-photon beam splitter, which exists only at finite asymmetry. Another interaction in this regime is of cross-Kerr type, which exists at all asymmetries, but generally much weaker than the beam splitter interaction. Increasing magnetic field can substantially enhance optomechanical couplings strength with the potential for the radiation pressure coupling to reach the single-photon strong coupling regime, even the ultrastrong coupling regime, in which the single-photon coupling rate exceeds the mechanical frequency.

Nonlinear effects in modulated quantum optomechanics

The nonlinear quantum regime is crucial for implementing interesting quantum effects, which have wide applications in modern quantum science. Here we propose an effective method to reach the nonlinear quantum regime in a modulated optomechanical system (OMS), which is originally in the weak-coupling regime. The mechanical spring constant and optomechanical interaction are modulated periodically. This leads to the result that the resonant optomechanical interaction can be effectively enhanced into the single-photon strong-coupling regime by the modulation-induced mechanical parametric amplification. Moreover, the amplified phonon noise can be suppressed completely by introducing a squeezed vacuum reservoir, which ultimately leads to the realization of photon blockade in a weakly coupled OMS. The reached nonlinear quantum regime also allows us to engineer the nonclassical states (e.g., Schr\"{o}dinger cat states) of cavity field, which are robust against the phonon noise. This work offers an alternative approach to enhance the quantum nonlinearity of an OMS, which should expand the applications of cavity optomechanics in the quantum realm.

Nonclassical correlation between optical and microwave photons in a hybrid electro-optomechanical system

A scheme to correlate optical and microwave photons is proposed in a hybrid electro-optomechanical system, where mechanical resonator is coupled to both optical and microwave fields. Analytical and numerical simulation results show that the cross-correlation function between Stokes and anti-Stokes photons strongly violates the Cauchy–Schwarz inequality, which confirms the nonclassical correlation between the optical and microwave photons. It is worth noting that the nonclassical photon pairs with vast different wavelengths, which may be useful for quantum communication, are generated under the experimentally accessible weak coupling limit rather than single-photon strong coupling regime. In addition, the protocol provides a possible route to combine the respective advantages of optical photons, microwave photons, and phonons in a hybrid electro-optomechanical system.

Two mode mechanical non-Gaussian squeezed number state in a two-membrane optomechanical system

We consider an optomechanical system with two membranes when a bichromatic laser field with red-sideband and blue-sideband frequencies is applied in the single photon strong coupling regime. It is shown that using the mode selecting method and under the Lamb–Dicke approximation, motion of membranes can evolve to single or two mode squeezed number states. By considering the environmental effect, a Wigner function is plotted for understanding the conditions that lead to the generation of non-Gaussian states. The results show that, in this system, initial states of membranes are important to generation of non-Gaussian mechanical squeezed number states.
