THE DETERMINATION OF THE SURFACE ADHESION RESISTANCE AND PENDULUM HARDNESS ON THE PARQUETS APPLIED UV VARNISH AS SINGLE AND DOUBLE LAYERS

In this study, it aimed to determine the pendulum hardness and adhesion resistance test results on the parquets which are produced from sapeli, limba, chestnut and iroko applied ultraviolet (UV) varnish sistem according to different varnish layers. As a result of this; the pendulum hardness and surface adhesion values were determined on the materials derived from the different layers. Consequently, it was found that the double layer UV system varnish had a higher pendulum hardness value than the single layer application. As a matter of fact, as the number of UV system varnish layer increased, the pendulum hardness values increased in the same ratio. Taking into account the results of the surface adhesion resistance experiments, it can be said that the wood texture has an important role on the UV system varnish application.

Effect of different application techniques on microshear bond strength of self-etch adhesives to dentin

Objectives: To investigate the effect of different self-etch adhesive systems application techniques: active or passive in a single or double layer on adhesive–dentin microshear bond strength.Methods: Occlusal surfaces of 48 extracted human molars were ground to expose flat superficial dentin surfaces. Specimens were randomly divided into two main groups according to the tested self-etch adhesive system either: One-step self-etch (AdperTM easy-one) or two-step self-etch (AdperTM SE Plus). Each adhesive system was applied on the prepared dentin surfaces followed one of these techniques: (1) Passive application of a single layer, (2) Active application of single layer, (3) Passive application of double adhesive layer (with light curing in between), and (4) Active application of double adhesive layers. Resin composite was packed inside micro-tubes fixed on the bonded dentin surfaces and light cured for 40 s. All specimens were stored in artificial saliva either for 24 h or 3 months before testing. Microshear bond strength test was employed using a universal testing machine at a crosshead speed of 0.5 mm/min.Results: AdperTM SE Plus showed higher significant microshear bond strength in compared with AdperTM easy-one. For both adhesive systems active application showed higher significant microshear bond strength to dentin than passive application. Double application of adhesive systems showed lower microshear bond strength than single application.Conclusion: Active application of self-etch adhesives could improve the dentin microshear bond strength. Double application with curing in between the layers did not improve the bond strength to the tested adhesive.

Initial experience with application of single layer modified Kugel mesh for inguinal hernia repair: Case series of 72 consecutive patients

This is an initial review of the safety and efficacy of anterior preperitoneal modified Kugel (MK) mesh herniorrhaphy application without using optional onlay mesh. We retrospectively reviewed patients who underwent herniorrhaphy by a single surgeon from July 1st, 2009 to December 31st, 2010. During these 18 months, a total of 72 patients underwent single-layer MK mesh herniorrhaphy. Anterior preperitoneal approach was used to place the mesh. If the patient's inguinal hernia defect did not exceed the memory ring of MK mesh, the onlay mesh was omitted. Postoperative results (wound infection, recurrence, and chronic pain/discomfort) were recorded and analyzed. A total of 72 patients underwent anterior preperitoneal single layer MK mesh herniorrhaphy. One patient had recurrent hernia after 1 year and was treated with a laparoscopic transabdominal preperitoneal operation. The most common postoperative complaint was mild soreness which was self-resolving after 1 month. Mean total operative time (skin to skin) was 73 minutes. The average hospital stay was 2 days. Most of the postoperative complications including soreness (14%), pain for>3 months (1.4%), and scrotal hematoma (1.4%) were self-resolving. One patient experienced wound infection, which was treated with oral antibiotics. One patient had recurrence 1 year after the operation. The postoperative complication and recurrence rates of single-layer MK mesh herniorrhaphy was comparable with previously reported tension-free repair. Single-layer application is safe and feasible. A longer follow-up period and larger study group with a control group are needed to verify our method.

Polylactic acid and polyethylene glycol prevent surgical adhesions.

Re-mediastinoscopy could be risky because of adhesions from the previous mediastinoscopy. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of a bio-resorbable barrier on adhesion formation in a re-mediastinoscopy rat model. Mediastinal dissection similar to mediastinoscopy was done in twenty-eight rats and a polymeric film comprising of polylactic acid and polyethylene glycol (Repel-cv®, SyntheMed Inc., NJ, USA) was placed on trachea in the study groups. Group 1 (sham, sacrificed at day 30), Group 2 (single barrier, sacrificed at day 30), Group 3 (single barrier, sacrificed at day 60), Group 4(double layer barrier, sacrificed at day 60). Mediastinal adhesions, degree of inflammation, vascular proliferation, foreign body reaction and fibroblast proliferation was compared. Macroscopic dissection showed significantly dense adhesions in Sham Group and Group 3 (p < 0.05). Histopathologic examination showed that there was a significant difference between groups when the foreign body reaction and fibroblast proliferation was evaluated (p0.05). This unique experimental study showed that adhesion barrier was effective as single layer application at day 30 and double layer application at day 60. At clinical conversion, by the application of barrier, the formation of adhesions might be decreased to provide a safe re-mediastinoscopy (Tab. 2, Fig. 4, Ref. 23).

Biospecific properties of lysine-containing polyelectrolyte coatings for blood contacting devices

Biospecific properties of thromboresistant bilayer and multilayer coatings based on polyelectrolyte complexes of modified copolymer of N-vinylpyrrolidone and maleic acid (VPMA) with chitosan, amphiphilic chitosan or albumin were investigated. VPMA contained an affinity ligand towards plasminogen, α-amino coupled lysine residues. Polyethylene and polystyrene surfaces were investigated before and after their covering by protective polyelectrolyte coatings. The specific adsorption of plasminogen (precursor of the fibrinolytic enzyme plasmin) from its solutions and from human plasma was investigated using these model systems. It was found that all coatings with the outer contact layer of the lysine-containing affinity polymer exhibited affinity towards plasminogen. However, multilayer polyelectrolyte coatings were more efficient than the bilayer coatings with a single layer application and the affinity polymer coatings without interlayer. The decrease in the degree of thrombogenicity of the materials modified by polyelectrolyte coatings has been demonstrated in vitro and ex vivo. Employment of the proposed modification of surfaces will improve hemocompatibility of medical devices.
