SonoMyoNet: A Convolutional Neural Network for Predicting Isometric Force from Highly Sparse Ultrasound Images.

Ultrasound imaging or sonomyography has been found to be a robust modality for measuring muscle activity due to its ability to image deep-seated muscles directly while providing superior spatiotemporal specificity compared to surface electromyography-based techniques. Quantifying the morphological changes during muscle activity involves computationally expensive approaches for tracking muscle anatomical structures or extracting features from brightness-mode (B-mode) images and amplitude-mode (A-mode) signals. This paper uses an offline regression convolutional neural network (CNN) called SonoMyoNet to estimate continuous isometric force from sparse ultrasound scanlines. SonoMyoNet learns features from a few equispaced scanlines selected from B-mode images and utilizes the learned features to estimate continuous isometric force accurately. The performance of SonoMyoNet was evaluated by varying the number of scanlines to simulate the placement of multiple single-element ultrasound transducers in a wearable system. Results showed that SonoMyoNet could accurately predict isometric force with just four scanlines and is immune to speckle noise and shifts in the scanline location. Thus, the proposed network reduces the computational load involved in feature tracking algorithms and estimates muscle force from the global features of sparse ultrasound images.

The Evolution of Microwave-Induced Thermoacoustic Signals Generated During Pulsed Microwave Ablation in Bovine Liver

The temperature dependence of microwave-induced thermoacoustic signals generated in tissue may be exploited to monitor microwave ablation in real-time. We present an experimental study investigating the evolution of microwave-induced thermoacoustic signals that are generated within an ablation zone during microwave ablation in bovine liver tissue. An X-band interstitial coaxial ablation antenna is used to simultaneously heat liver tissue to temperatures up to 90 <inline-formula xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"><tex-math notation="LaTeX">$^{\circ }$</tex-math></inline-formula> C and excite thermoacoustic signals via the absorption of pulsed microwave energy. Thermoacoustic signals are detected using a single-element ultrasound transducer located at the surface of the tissue. Both fresh and boiled liver tissue samples are used in experiments to decouple the influence of temperature and tissue coagulation on thermoacoustic signal characteristics. We identify two thermoacoustic signal characteristics of interest: arrival time of the pulse at the ultrasound receiver and the energy in the pulse. We find that the time difference of arrival over the course of microwave ablation grows in magnitude due to temperature-dependent speed of sound and tissue shrinkage. Thermoacoustic signal energy generally increases throughout microwave ablation, implying an increasing temperature-dependent thermal expansion coefficient of liver tissue. Of the two characteristics, time difference of arrival shows the most promise as a trackable feature for monitoring microwave ablation in real time.

Three-dimensional magneto-acousto-electrical tomography (3D MAET) with single-element ultrasound transducer and coded excitation: A phantom validation study

Magneto-acousto-electrical tomography (MAET) is a hybrid imaging modality combining the merits of high contrast and high resolution. Current studies in MAET mainly focus on two-dimensional (2D) imaging. In practice, an object's conductivity is usually three-dimensional inhomogeneous. Therefore, three-dimensional MAET (3D MAET) may provide a more comprehensive understanding of the conductivity distribution of an object. The basic idea of realizing 3D MAET is to move the ultrasound transducer mechanically to accomplish the 3D scanning. However, this mechanical scanning procedure is time-consuming. Moreover, due to the weak MAE signal, traditional MAET based on single-pulse excitation requires thousands of signal averaging operations to improve the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of imaging, which may further increase the time burden of 3D MAET. This study aims to investigate the feasibility of 3D MAET based on a 1D ultrasound transducer and coded-excitation technology. A 13-bit Barker code was used as the excitation code, and two 3D biological phantoms were used to validate the imaging accuracy. The experimental results show that the imaging results of this method can reflect the change of conductivity in 3D space. The average relative errors of the measured slope of the conductivity distribution in Phantom 1 and Phantom 2 are 6.72% and 2.02%, respectively. Moreover, compared with the short-pulse excitation method, the Barker-coded excitation method can obtain comparative imaging SNR with about a quarter average, thus demonstrating the feasibility of 3D MAET with a single-element ultrasound transducer and coded excitation.

Simultaneous multi-target ultrasound neuromodulation in freely-moving mice based on a single-element ultrasound transducer

Objective. Ultrasound neuromodulation has become an emerging method for the therapy of neurodegenerative and psychiatric diseases. The phased array ultrasonic transducer enables multi-target ultrasound neuromodulation in small animals, but the relatively large size and mass and the thick cables of the array limit the free movement of small animals. Furthermore, spatial interference may occur during multi-target ultrasound brain stimulation with multiple micro transducers. Approach. In this study, we developed a miniature power ultrasound transducer and used the virtual source time inversion method and 3D printing technology to design, optimize, and manufacture the acoustic holographic lens to construct a multi-target ultrasound neuromodulation system for free-moving mice. The feasibility of the system was verified by in vitro transcranial ultrasound field measurements, in vivo dual-target blood-brain barrier (BBB) opening experiments, and in vivo dual-target ultrasound neuromodulation experiments. Main results. The developed miniature transducer had a diameter of 4.0 mm, a center frequency of 1.1 MHz, and a weight of 1.25 g. The developed miniature acoustic holographic lens had a weight of 0.019 g to generate dual-focus transcranial ultrasound. The ultrasonic field measurements’ results showed that the bifocal’s horizontal distance was 3.0 mm, the −6 dB focal spot width in the x-direction was 2.5 and 2.25 mm, and 2.12 and 2.24 mm in the y-direction. Finally, the in vivo experimental results showed that the system could achieve dual-target BBB opening and ultrasound neuromodulation in freely-moving mice. Significance. The ultrasonic neuromodulation system based on a miniature single-element transducer and the miniature acoustic holographic lens could achieve dual-target neuromodulation in awake small animals, which is expected to be applied to the research of non-invasive dual-target ultrasonic treatment of brain diseases in awake small animals.

Development of a wireless ultrasonic brain stimulation system for concurrent bilateral neuromodulation in freely moving rodents.

Bilateral brain stimulation is an important modality used to investigate brain circuits and treat neurological conditions. Recently, low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) received significant attention as a novel non-invasive neurostimulation technique with high spatial specificity. Despite the growing interest, the typical ultrasound brain stimulation study, especially for small animals, is limited to a single target of sonication. The constraint is associated with the complexity and the cost of the hardware system required to achieve multi-regional sonication. This work presented the development of a low-cost LIPUS system with a pair of single-element ultrasound transducers to address the above problem. The system was built with a multicore processor with an RF amplifier circuit. In addition, LIPUS device was incorporated with a wireless module (bluetooth low energy) and powered by a single 3.7 V battery. As a result, we achieved an ultrasound transmission with a central frequency of 380 kHz and a peak-to-peak pressure of 480 kPa from each ultrasound transducer. The developed system was further applied to anesthetized rats to investigate the difference between uni- and bilateral stimulation. A significant difference in cortical power density extracted from electroencephalogram signals was observed between uni- and bilateral LIPUS stimulation. The developed device provides an affordable solution to investigate the effects of LIPUS on functional interhemispheric connection.

Experimental setup for the ultrasonic fractionation of flowing whole blood in a capillary

Abstract If a long ultrasound driving pulse is chosen such, that its frequency is greater than the resonance frequency of one cell type and less than the resonance frequency of another cell type, the cells are separated in different nodes and antinodes of the standing sound field. The purpose of this study was to build an experimental setup for the ultrasonic fractionation of whole blood in flow conditions. Blood fractionation is the separation of whole blood into its separate components, commonly used for analysis and transfusions. The experimental setup comprised a container with singleelement ultrasound transducers customisable in elevation and azimuth, focussed on a capillary through which blood was flowing. The acoustic focus coincided with the optical focus of a microscopic system to which a high-speed camera was attached. Ultrasound transducers were used with centre frequencies between 1MHz and 20MHz and with pressure amplitudes less than 1MPa. The duty cycle was greater than 10% in all experiments. The field of view was 0.2×0.2mm2. The optical resolution and camera speed allowed for visibility of red and white blood cells during flow conditions. Preliminary results show that red and white blood cells could be forced to move in opposite directions. The acoustic frequencies and pressures used were representative for those used in clinical diagnosis. We have shown that ultrasonic whole blood fractionation is feasible using ultrasound. Sonic fractionation speed might be an indicator for diseases such as malaria.

Airy Beam-enabled Binary Acoustic Metasurfaces for Underwater Ultrasound Beam Manipulation.

Airy beams are peculiar beams that are non-diffracting, self-accelerating, and self-healing, and they have offered great opportunities for ultrasound beam manipulation. However, one critical barrier that limits the broad applications of Airy beams in ultrasound is the lack of simply built device to generate Airy beams in water. This work presents a family of Airy beam-enabled binary acoustic metasurfaces (AB-BAMs) to generate Airy beams for underwater ultrasound beam manipulation. AB-BAMs are designed and fabricated by 3D printing with two coding bits: a polylactic acid (which is the commonly used 3D printing material) unit acting as a bit "1" and a water unit acting as a bit "0". The distribution of the binary units on the metasurface is determined by the pattern of Airy beam. To showcase the wavefront engineering capability of the AB-BAMs, several examples of AB-BAMs are designed, 3D printed, and coupled with a planar single-element ultrasound transducer for experimental validation. We demonstrate the capability of AB-BAMs in flexibly tuning the focal region size and beam focusing in 3D space by changing the design of the AB-BAMs. The focal depth of AB-BAMs can be continuous and electronical tuned by adjusting the operating frequency of the planar transducer without replacing the AB-BAMs. The superimposing method is leveraged to enable the generation of complex acoustic fields, e.g., multi-foci and letter patterns (e.g., "W" and "U"). The more complex focal patterns are shown to be also continuously steerable by simply adjusting the operating frequency. Furthermore, the proposed 3D-printed AB-BAMs are simple to design, easy to fabricate, and low-cost to produce with the capabilities to achieve tunable focal size, flexible 3D beam focusing, arbitrary multipoint focusing, and continuous steerability, which creates unprecedented potential for ultrasound beam manipulation.

High frame rate (∼3Hz) circular photoacoustic tomography using single-element ultrasound transducer aided with deep learning.

.SignificanceIn circular scanning photoacoustic tomography (PAT), it takes several minutes to generate an image of acceptable quality, especially with a single-element ultrasound transducer (UST). The imaging speed can be enhanced by faster scanning (with high repetition rate light sources) and using multiple-USTs. However, artifacts arising from the sparse signal acquisition and low signal-to-noise ratio at higher scanning speeds limit the imaging speed. Thus, there is a need to improve the imaging speed of the PAT systems without hampering the quality of the PAT image.AimTo improve the frame rate (or imaging speed) of the PAT system by using deep learning (DL).ApproachFor improving the frame rate (or imaging speed) of the PAT system, we propose a novel U-Net-based DL framework to reconstruct PAT images from fast scanning data.ResultsThe efficiency of the network was evaluated on both single- and multiple-UST-based PAT systems. Both phantom and in vivo imaging demonstrate that the network can improve the imaging frame rate by approximately sixfold in single-UST-based PAT systems and by approximately twofold in multi-UST-based PAT systems.ConclusionsWe proposed an innovative method to improve the frame rate (or imaging speed) by using DL and with this method, the fastest frame rate of imaging is achieved without hampering the quality of the reconstructed image.

3-D High Frequency Ultrasound Imaging by Piezo-Driving a Single-Element Transducer.

Electronic scanning of two-dimensional (2-D) arrays and mechanical or freehand scanning of one-dimensional (1-D) arrays have been mostly utilized for conventional three-dimensional (3-D) ultrasound (US) imaging. However, the development of 2-D arrays and the hardware systems are complicated and expensive, while freehand systems with positioning sensors and mechanical systems are mostly bulky. This article represents a novel scanning strategy for achieving high-quality 3-D US imaging with a high-frequency single-element transducer. A 42-MHz US transducer with a compact structure was designed and fabricated, which was excited in the 2-D vibration by a tubular piezoelectric actuator. A dedicated imaging system was set up and both B-mode and 3-D US imaging of a custom wire phantom have been carried out to evaluate the performance of the proposed transducer. Compared to the results obtained with the motorized linear translation stage, the reconstructed images obtained by the proposed resonance scanning method are accurate, demonstrating the feasibility of 3-D US imaging with a vibrating single-element US transducer.

Personalized digital humans for rehabilitation and assistive devices

Introduction: Ultrasound is routinely used by rehabilitation specialists to establish differential diagnosis of the residuum’s neuromusculoskeletal issues experienced by former and active Service Members suffering from limb loss1. Ultrasound offers real-time, non-ionizing, unspecialised facility assessment. Conventional imaging modalities record a qualitative static image. More fundamental signal/data display modalities such as the raw radio-frequency signal and A-mode are rarely utilised, although offer specialised opportunities, particularly for quantitative tissue characterisation, when the subject is mobile, and when several anatomical locations need to be synchronously assessed. Our aim is to develop a wearable ultrasound biosensor system that provides real-time assessment of various anatomical compartment dimensions within a post-amputation residual lower limb of former and active Service Members, termed Dynamic Anatomical Ultrasonography (DAU). Methods and results: The Olympus Omniscan MX is a highly-portable and rugged ultrasound instrument aimed primarily at the industrial sector. It incorporates the facility to connect up to eight individual single-element ultrasound transducers. A custom pseudo prosthetic socket was created for an asymptomatic subject, to which were attached two 1 MHz, 19 mm diameter ultrasound transducers, as shown in Fig. 1A. Ultrasound signal data was recorded for a defined measurement period of 10 seconds as the subject repeatedly lifted and lowered their thigh. Utilising the semi-automated time-gate signal detection facility, the depth of the femur bone surface was recorded, shown in Fig. 1B. Discussion/future directions: We have demonstrated the ability to monitor motions of the femur; of particular note is that measurements were obtained through the socket and silicone liner in addition to the overlying soft tissues. It is hypothesised that knowledge of the dynamic behaviour of the various tissue compartments will improve our understanding of the biomechanics associated with the residual limb of individuals suffering from limb loss and, furthermore, facilitate the fitting and development of bionics prostheses for former and active Service Members2. Our long-term aim is to investigate whether a combination of ultrasound and mechanical load biomarker data, fed into a ‘Digital Twin’ computational simulation will improve socket design, restore mobility, facilitate return to active duty, and, ultimately, enhance users’ quality of life. Transmastoid Ultrasound Detection of Middle Ear Effusion and Its Association with Clinical Audiometric Tests.

Medical history taking, otoscopy, tympanometry, and audiometry are clinical methods to diagnose middle ear effusion (MEE); however, these procedures are experience-dependent and result in misdiagnosis under unfavorable conditions of the external auditory canal in non-cooperative young children. This study aimed to explore the use of transmastoid ultrasound combined with the Nakagami parameter analysis to detect MEE in children aged 3–5 years and to compare the proposed method with clinical evaluation methods. A total of forty subjects were enrolled; for each subject, a single-element ultrasound transducer of 2.25 MHz was used to measure backscattered signals returned from the mastoid for estimating the Nakagami parameter, which is a measure of the echo amplitude distribution. Tympanogram and hearing loss were also measured for comparisons. The results showed that the Nakagami parameter in the patients with MEE was significantly larger than that of the normal group (p < 0.05). The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC) for using the Nakagami parameter to detect MEE was 0.90, and the sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy were 82.5%, 97.5%, and 79.6%, respectively. The Nakagami parameter for tympanogram types B/C was higher than that for tympanogram type A (p < 0.05); it was also higher in the subjects with hearing loss (p < 0.05). Quantitative transmastoid ultrasound based on the Nakagami parameter analysis has the potential to detect MEE and evaluate hearing loss.

Longitudinal shear wave elasticity measurements of millimeter-sized biomaterials using a single-element transducer platform.

Temporal variations of the extracellular matrix (ECM) stiffness profoundly impact cellular behaviors, possibly more significantly than the influence of static stiffness. Three-dimensional (3D) cell cultures with tunable matrix stiffness have been utilized to characterize the mechanobiological interactions of elasticity-mediated cellular behaviors. Conventional studies usually perform static interrogations of elasticity at micro-scale resolution. While such studies are essential for investigations of cellular mechanotransduction, few tools are available for depicting the temporal dynamics of the stiffness of the cellular environment, especially for optically turbid millimeter-sized biomaterials. We present a single-element transducer shear wave (SW) elasticity imaging system that is applied to a millimeter-sized, ECM-based cell-laden hydrogel. The single-element ultrasound transducer is used both to generate SWs and to detect their arrival times after being reflected from the side boundaries of the sample. The sample’s shear wave speed (SWS) is calculated by applying a time-of-flight algorithm to the reflected SWs. We use this noninvasive and technically straightforward approach to demonstrate that exposing 3D cancer cell cultures to X-ray irradiation induces a temporal change in the SWS. The proposed platform is appropriate for investigating in vitro how a group of cells remodels their surrounding matrix and how changes to their mechanical properties could affect the embedded cells in optically turbid millimeter-sized biomaterials.

Classifying Muscle States with One-Dimensional Radio-Frequency Signals from Single Element Ultrasound Transducers.

The reliable assessment of muscle states, such as contracted muscles vs. non-contracted muscles or relaxed muscles vs. fatigue muscles, is crucial in many sports and rehabilitation scenarios, such as the assessment of therapeutic measures. The goal of this work was to deploy machine learning (ML) models based on one-dimensional (1-D) sonomyography (SMG) signals to facilitate low-cost and wearable ultrasound devices. One-dimensional SMG is a non-invasive technique using 1-D ultrasound radio-frequency signals to measure muscle states and has the advantage of being able to acquire information from deep soft tissue layers. To mimic real-life scenarios, we did not emphasize the acquisition of particularly distinct signals. The ML models exploited muscle contraction signals of eight volunteers and muscle fatigue signals of 21 volunteers. We evaluated them with different schemes on a variety of data types, such as unprocessed or processed raw signals and found that comparatively simple ML models, such as Support Vector Machines or Logistic Regression, yielded the best performance w.r.t. accuracy and evaluation time. We conclude that our framework for muscle contraction and muscle fatigue classifications is very well-suited to facilitate low-cost and wearable devices based on ML models using 1-D SMG.

High-Pressure Low-Frequency Lateral Mode Phased-Array Transducer System for the Treatment of Deep Vein Thrombosis: An In Vitro Study.

Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) can lead to a fatal disease known as pulmonary embolism. Application of high-power ultrasound has been successful in studies to mechanically fragment the clots. Single-element ultrasound transducers were used in most of the studies. Challenges associated with phased arrays, such as high electrical impedance and element breakdown at high voltages, were addressed in the previous study, and a high-power 64-element transducer module was designed and fabricated. In this study, a cylindrical array of 16 modules with the frequency of 260 kHz was modeled and constructed for DVT thrombolysis. The maximum pressure, focal size, and steering ability of the array were examined. In vitro experiments were conducted to assess the performance of the array. The simulated pressure amplitude of 34 MPa at the depth of 55 mm (average femoral vein (FV) distance from the inner surface of the thigh) was in consistent with the experiments and satisfied the purpose of this study. Moreover, the employed module distribution resulted in a focal spot dimension of 2.4×2.8×7.3 mm3 (at the 75% pressure amplitude level) that can be confined in a human FV with the average diameter of 12 mm. In vitro experiments manifested a partial and complete clot breakdown at 11.5- and 15-MPa pressure at the focus. The design and engineering of the array system was succeeded in maintaining the desired pressure and focal size even when steered. The results presented in this study suggest the potential of the designed array system for clinical applications.

High-frame-rate A-mode ultrasound for calibration-free cuffless carotid pressure: feasibility study using lower body negative pressure intervention

Purpose Existing technologies to measure central blood pressure (CBP) intrinsically depend on peripheral pressure or calibration models derived from it. Pharmacological or physiological interventions yielding different central and peripheral responses compromise the accuracy of such methods. We present a high-frame-rate ultrasound technology for cuffless and calibration-free evaluation of BP from the carotid artery. The system uses a pair of single-element ultrasound transducers to capture the arterial diameter and local pulse wave velocity (PWV) for the evaluation of beat-by-beat BP employing a novel biomechanical model. Materials and methods System’s functionality assessment was conducted on eight male subjects (26 ± 4 years, normotensive and no history of cardiovascular risks) by perturbing pressure via short-term moderate lower body negative pressure (LBNP) intervention (−40 mmHg for 1 min). The ability of the system to capture dynamic responses of carotid pressure to LBNP was investigated and compared against the responses of peripheral pressure measured using a continuous BP monitor. Results While the carotid pressure manifested trends similar to finger measurements during LBNP, the system also captured the differential carotid-to-peripheral pressure response, which corroborates the literature. The carotid diastolic and mean pressures agreed with the finger pressures (limits-of-agreement within ±7 mmHg) and exhibited acceptable uncertainty (mean absolute errors were 2.4 ± 3.5 and 2.6 ± 4.0 mmHg, respectively). Concurrent to the literature, the carotid systolic and pulse pressures (PPs) were significantly lower than those of the finger pressures by 11.1 ± 9.4 and 11.3 ± 8.2 mmHg, respectively (p < .0001). Conclusions The study demonstrated the method’s potential for providing cuffless and calibration-free pressure measurements while reliably capturing the physiological aspects, such as PP amplification and dynamic pressure responses to intervention.

Design and Optimization of Ultrasound Phased Arrays for Large-Scale Ultrasound Neuromodulation.

Low-intensity transcranial focused ultrasound stimulation (tFUS), as a noninvasive neuromodulation modality, has shown to be effective in animals and even humans with improved millimeter-scale spatial resolution compared to its noninvasive counterparts. But conventional tFUS systems are built with bulky single-element ultrasound (US) transducers that must be mechanically moved to change the stimulation target. To achieve large-scale ultrasound neuromodulation (USN) within a given tissue volume, a US transducer array should electronically be driven in a beamforming fashion (known as US phased array) to steer focused ultrasound beams towards different neural targets. This paper presents the theory and design methodology of US phased arrays for USN at a large scale. For a given tissue volume and sonication frequency (f), the optimal geometry of a US phased array is found with an iterative design procedure that maximizes a figure of merit (FoM) and minimizes side/grating lobes (avoiding off-target stimulation). The proposed FoM provides a balance between the power efficiency and spatial resolution of a US array in USN. A design example of a US phased array has been presented for USN in a rat's brain with an optimized linear US array. In measurements, the fabricated US phased array with 16 elements (16.7×7.7×2 mm3), driven by 150 V (peak-peak) pulses at f = 833.3 kHz, could generate a focused US beam with a lateral resolution of 1.6 mm and pressure output of 1.15 MPa at a focal distance of 12 mm. The capability of the US phased array in beam steering and focusing from -60o to 60o angles was also verified in measurements.

Ultrasound Thermometry for HIFU-Therapy

Abstract High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) is an alternative tumour therapy with the ability for non-invasive thermal ablation of tissue. For a safe application, the heat deposition needs to be monitored over time, which is currently done with Magnetic Resonance Imaging. Ultrasound (US) based monitoring is a promising alternative, as it is less expensive and allows the use of a single device for both therapy and monitoring. In this work, a method for spatial and temporal US thermometry has been investigated based on simulation studies and in-vitro measurements. The chosen approach is based on the approximately linear dependence between temperature and speed of sound (SoS) in tissue for a given temperature range. By tracking the speckles of successive B-images, the possibility of detecting local changes in SoS and therefore in temperature is given. A speckle tracking algorithm was implemented for 2D and 3D US thermometry using a spatial compounding method to reduce artifacts. The algorithm was experimentally validated in an agar-based phantom and in porcine tissue for temperature rises up to △ 8°C. We used a focusing single element US transducer as therapeutic probe, a linear (/matrix array) transducer with 128 (/32∙32) elements for imaging and thermocouples for validation and calibration. In all experiments, both computational and in-vitro, we succeeded in monitoring the thermal induced SoS changes over time. The in-vitro measurements were in good agreement with the simulation results and the thermocouple measurements (rms temperature difference = 0.53 °C, rms correlation coefficient = 0. 96).

Deep-learning-based multi-transducer photoacoustic tomography imaging without radius calibration

Pulsed laser diodes are used in photoacoustic tomography (PAT) as excitation sources because of their low cost, compact size, and high pulse repetition rate. In combination with multiple single-element ultrasound transducers (SUTs) the imaging speed of PAT can be improved. However, during PAT image reconstruction, the exact radius of each SUT is required for accurate reconstruction. Here we developed a novel deep learning approach to alleviate the need for radius calibration. We used a convolutional neural network (fully dense U-Net) aided with a convolutional long short-term memory block to reconstruct the PAT images. Our analysis on the test set demonstrates that the proposed network eliminates the need for radius calibration and improves the peak signal-to-noise ratio by ∼73% without compromising the image quality. In vivo imaging was used to verify the performance of the network.

High-Power Phased-Array Transducer Module for the Construction of a System for the Treatment of Deep Vein Thrombosis.

Blood clot can be disintegrated by high-intensity focused ultrasound alone through inertial cavitation. There are limitations in using single-element ultrasound transducers for this purpose such as lack of steerability and control of the focus in terms of shape and location. Phased-array transducers being able to rapidly scan over the clots can alleviate this problem. A full 3-D control of the ultrasound beam can be achieved by 2-D electronically steerable arrays. However, the required high-pressure amplitude has not been possible with such arrays. In this work, a 2-D 64-element fully populated phased-array transducer module was designed and fabricated for the high-pressure amplitude required for deep vein thrombosis (DVT). Lateral coupling was considered for the transducer design to decrease the electrical impedance and eliminate the need for electrical matching circuit. PZT-4 with a thickness of 0.35 mm, an element surface area of [Formula: see text] mm, and a length of 6 mm showed a mean electrical impedance of 60.4 ± 11.5 measured for each transducer element facilitating effective electric power transfer from the driving electronics. No breakdown was observed when the voltage was increased gradually to 180 ± 3 Vpp. Operation at 180 Vpp was found to be safe over 10,000 repetitions without reduction in the power, resulting in the average pressure amplitude of 1.01 ± 0.09 MPa at 2 mm from the element surface. These pressure amplitude values indicate that an array of eight modules (80 [Formula: see text] mm) is required to reach to the pressure amplitude needed for DVT. Such arrays are practical with the current technology.

ARTSENS® Pen—portable easy-to-use device for carotid stiffness measurement: technology validation and clinical-utility assessment

Objective: The conventional medical imaging modalities used for arterial stiffness measurement are non-scalable and unviable for field-level vascular screening. The need for an affordable, easy-to-operate automated non-invasive technologies remains unmet. To address this need, we present a portable image-free ultrasound device—ARTSENS® Pen, that uses a single-element ultrasound transducer for carotid stiffness evaluation. Approach: The performance of the device was clinically validated on a cohort of 523 subjects. A clinical-grade B-mode ultrasound imaging system (ALOKA eTracking) was used as the reference. Carotid stiffness measurements were taken using the ARTSENS® Pen in sitting posture emulating field scenarios. Main results: A statistically significant correlation (r > 0.80, p < 0.0001) with a non-significant bias was observed between the measurements obtained from the two devices. The ARTSENS® Pen device could perform highly repeatable measurements (with variation smaller than 10%) on a relatively larger percentage of the population when compared to the ALOKA system. The study results also revealed the sensitivity of ARTSENS® Pen to detect changes in arterial stiffness with age. Significance: The easy-to-use technology and the automated algorithms of the ARTSENS® Pen make it suitable for cardiovascular risk assessment in resource-constrained settings.
