Synthesis of a novel twisted π-conjugated macrocycle via double Friedel-Crafts reaction and its physical properties.

We synthesized a cyclic molecule from diarylalkynes and Meldrum's acid derivatives as the methylenation reagent via double Friedel-Crafts reaction. Single-crystal X-ray structure analysis confirmed the twisted structure of the molecule. We also investigated their physical properties and homoconjugation by UV-Vis, photoluminescence, DFT and TD-DFT calculations.

A Triply Linked Copper(III) Dicarbacorrole Dimer.

A triply linked dicarbacorrole dimer (7) was synthesized from a new meso-meso singly linked dicarbacorrole dimer precursor (6) via an oxidative fusion reaction by 2,3-dichloro-5,6-dicyano-p-benzoquinone (DDQ) in the presence of trifluoromethanesulfonic acid (TfOH). Single crystal X-ray structure of 7 adopts a flat conformation with a length as ca. 15.946 Å and a width as 6.903 Å, which can be regarded as a short carbaporphyrinoid tape. Two coordinated Cu ions keeps the +3 oxidation state in 7, as confirmed by NMR spectroscopy, single crystal X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). This is in sharp contrast to the Osuka's triply linked tetrapyrrolic corrole dimers, where the inner 3NH form is not stable and thus can only act as a divalent ligand. Due to the non-aromatic nature of dicarbacorrole macrocycle, the largely decreased HOMO-LUMO gap and red-shifted absorption of 7 are best ascribed to the strong electronic interaction between two dipyrromethene-type chromophores. To our knowledge, this is the first fully fused carbaporphyrinoid dimer with β-β, meso-meso, β-β triply linkages prepared to date.

Conflicting Aromaticity in Trirhodium(I) Rosarin.

Aromaticity is one of the most important and widely used concepts in chemistry. Among the various experimentally discovered and theoretically predicted compounds that possess different types of aromaticity, conflicting aromaticity, where aromatic and antiaromatic electron delocalization is present in one molecule simultaneously, remains one of the most controversial and elusive concepts, although theoretically predicted 15 years ago. In this work, we synthesized a novel conflicting aromatic trirhodium complex that contains a σ-aromatic metal fragment surrounded by the π-antiaromatic organic ligand and characterized it by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, high-resolution mass spectrometry, and X-ray single crystal structure analysis. Experimental characterization and quantum chemical calculations confirm the unique conflicting aromaticity of the synthesized trirhodium molecule. Thus, this novel conflicting aromatic molecule expands the family of aromatic compounds. This discovery will enable researchers to develop and understand the phenomena of conflicting aromaticity in chemistry.

Destruxin E backbone modification effects on osteoclast Morphology: Synthesis and SAR study of N-Desmethyl and N-Methyl analogs

The design and synthesis of N-desmethyl and N-methyl destruxin E analogs have been demonstrated. The X-ray single crystal structure of destruxin E (1a) revealed a stable three-dimensional (3D) structure, including a s-cis amide bond at the MeVal–MeAla moiety and two intramolecular hydrogen bonds between NH(β-Ala) and OC(Ile) and between NH(Ile) and OC(β-Ala). N-Desmethyl analogs 2a (MeAla → Ala) and 2b (MeVal → Val) were synthesized through macrolactonization similar to our previously reported synthesis of 1a. Conversely, for the synthesis of N-methyl analogs 2c (Ile → MeIle) and 2d (β-Ala → Meβ-Ala), macrolactonization did not proceed; therefore, cyclization precursors 10c and 10d were designed to maintain the intramolecular hydrogen bonds described above during their cyclization. The macrolactamization proceeded despite the presence of a less reactive N-methylamino group at the N-terminus in both cases. Analog 2a, which exhibits multiple conformers in solutions, was inactive at 50 μM, whereas analog 2b, which exhibits a conformation similar to that of 1a in solutions, exhibited morphological changes against osteoclast-like multinuclear cells at 1.6 μM. The activity of the MeIle analog 2c, which cannot take the intramolecular hydrogen bond (Ile)NH•••OC(β-Ala) in 1a, was markedly diminished compared with that of 1a, and that of the Meβ-Ala analog 2d, which cannot take the intramolecular hydrogen bond (β-Ala)NH•••OC(Ile) in 1a, was further reduced to one-fourth of that of 2c. The overall results indicate that both the s-cis amide bond at the MeVal–MeAla moiety and two intramolecular hydrogen bonds (β-Ala)NH•••OC(Ile) and (Ile)NH•••OC(β-Ala) are important for constraining the conformation of the macrocyclic peptide backbone in destruxin E, thereby exhibiting its potent biological activity.

Room-temperature serial synchrotron crystallography structure of Spinacia oleracea RuBisCO.

Ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (RuBisCO) is the enzyme responsible for the first step of carbon dioxide (CO2) fixation in plants, which proceeds via the carboxylation of ribulose 1,5-biphosphate. Because of the enormous importance of this reaction in agriculture and the environment, there is considerable interest in the mechanism of fixation of CO2 by RuBisCO. Here, a serial synchrotron crystallography structure of spinach RuBisCO is reported at2.3 Å resolution. This structure is consistent with earlier single-crystal X-ray structures of this enzyme and the results are a good starting point for a further push towards time-resolved serial synchrotron crystallography in order to better understand the mechanism of the reaction.

Helicene Appended Benzothiadiazoles as Chiral Emitters.

A homologous series of 4,7-bis(aryl) substituted benzothiadiazole (BTD) compounds, containing the helicenic derivatives bis([4]helicene), bis([5]helicene) and bis([6]helicene), have been prepared upon a double Suzuki coupling between 3,6-bis(pinacolyl-borane)-BTD and the corresponding bromo-aryl precursors. The single crystal X-ray structure of the bis([4]helicene) compound shows the existence of both helicities (M) and (P) on the same molecule. All the compounds of the series are highly emissive in solution, with quantum yields of the emission ranging from 50 to 91%. The enantiopure compounds (M,M) and (P,P) for the BTD-bis([6]helicene) have been prepared from the corresponding enantiopure 2-bromo-[6]helicene precursors. Their chiroptical properties have been investigated in correlation with density functional theory (DFT) calculations, which allowed to confidently assign the absolute configuration of the helicene arms and to characterize the different electronic transitions, including the low energy charge transfer excitation from helicenes to BTD. The enantiomerically pure fluorophores (M,M)- and (P,P)-BTD-bis([6]helicene), which exist in solution as two main conformers, according to the DFT calculations, show CPL activity in solution, with glum factors of ≈ 1.7×10-3 at lem = 525 nm, and also in the solid state, with glum factors of ≈ 1.2×10-3 in spite of the strong decrease of the quantum efficiency.

Synthesis of Benzo[e][1,4,3]oxathiazin-3-one 1-Oxides from NH-S-(2-Hydroxyaryl)sulfoximines.

Cyclizations of NH-S-(2-hydroxyaryl)sulfoximines with 1,1'-carbonyldiimidazol (CDI) give unprecedented benzo[e][1,4,3]oxathiazin-3-one 1-oxides in good yields. The standard synthetic protocol involves the use of DCE at an increased temperature for 16 h. Under mechanochemical conditions, a representative product was obtained without a solvent at ambient temperature in only 60 min. X-ray single-crystal structure analysis confirmed the molecular scaffold representing a three-dimensional heterocycle.

An Asymmetric Coumarin-Anthracene Conjugate as Efficient Fullerene-Free Acceptor for Organic Solar Cells.

Asymmetric wide-bandgap fullerene-free acceptors (FFAs) play a crucial role in organic solar cells (OSCs). Here, we designed and synthesized a simple asymmetric coumarin-anthracene conjugate named CA-CN with optical bandgap of 2.1 eV in a single-step condensation reaction. Single crystal X-ray structure analysis confirms various multiple intermolecular non-covalent interactions. The molecular orbital energy levels of CA-CN estimated from cyclic voltammetry were found to be suitable for its use as an acceptor for OSCs. Binary OSCs fabricated using CA-CN as acceptor and PTB7-Th as the donor achieve a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 11.13%. We further demonstrate that the insertion of 20 wt% of CA-CN as a third component in ternary OSCs with PTB7-Th:DICTF as the host material achieved an impressive PCE of 14.91%, an improvement of ~43% compared to the PTB7-Th:DICTF binary device (10.38%). Importantly, the ternary blend enhances the absorption coverage from 400 to 800 nm and improves the morphology of the active layer. The findings highlight the efficacy of an asymmetric design approach for FFAs, which paves the way for developing high-efficiency OSCs at low cost.

A Phosphine-Oxide Cobalt(II) Complex and Its Catalytic Activity Studies toward Alcohol Dehydrogenation Triggered Direct Synthesis of Imines and Quinolines.

Herein, a new pincer-like amino phosphine donor ligand, H2L1, and its phosphine-oxide analog, H2L2, were synthesized. Subsequently, cobalt(II) complexes 1 and 2 were synthesized by the reaction of anhydrous Co(II)Cl2 with ligands H2L1 and H2L2, respectively. The ligands and complexes were fully characterized by various physicochemical and spectroscopic characterization techniques. Finally, the identity of the complexes 1 and 2 was confirmed by single crystal X-ray structure determination. The phosphine ligand containing complex 1 was converted to the phosphine oxide ligand containing complex 2 in air in acetonitrile solution. Both complexes 1 and 2 were investigated as precatalysts for alcohol dehydrogenation-triggered synthesis of imines in air. The phosphine-oxide complex 2 was more efficient than the phosphine complex 1. A wide array of alcohols and amines were successfully reacted in a mild condition to result in imines in good to excellent yields. Precatalyst 2 was also highly efficient for the synthesis of varieties of quinolines in air. As H2L2 in 2 has side arms that can be deprotonated, we investigated complex 2 for its base (KOtBu) promoted deprotonation events by various spectroscopic studies and DFT calculations. These studies have shown that mono deprotonation of the amine side arm attached to the pyridine is quite feasible, and deprotonation of complex 2 leads to a dearomatized pyridyl ring containing complex 2a. The mechanistic investigations of the catalytic reaction, by a combination of experimental and computational studies, have suggested that the dearomatized complex, 2a acted as an active catalyst. The reaction proceeded through the hydride transfer pathway. The activation barrier of this step was calculated to be 26.5 kcal/mol, which is quite consistent with the experimental reaction temperature under aerobic conditions. Although various pincer-like complexes are explored for such reactions, phosphine oxide ligand-containing complexes are still unexplored.

Oxidovanadium(V) complexes with tridentate hydrazone ligands as oxygen atom transfer catalysts

Four isostructural oxovanadium(V) complexes with hydrazone ligands have been synthesised, characterised, and evaluated as epoxidation and sulfoxidation catalysts. The reactions between [VO(acac)2] (acac– = acetylacetonate) and H2Ln (n = 1–4), precursors for monoanionic tridentate hydrazone ligands, afford complexes formulated as [VO(Ln)(bzh)·MeOH] (1–4) when bidentate benzohydroxamic acid (Hbzh) is included as a co-ligand. Single crystal X-ray structure analyses showed that complexes 1–3 have a distorted octahedral coordination geometry with an O5N coordination environment. Cyclic voltammetry showed that all complexes undergo two quasi-irreversible reduction peaks and a single irreversible oxidation peak. The bonding in 1 has been investigated by electronic structure calculations, and these data are discussed with respect to the electrochemical results. Complexes 1–4 were tested as catalysts for the epoxidation of cis-cyclooctene at 50 °C and sulfoxidation of methyl-p-tolylsulfide at room temperature using tert-butyl hydroperoxide (tBuOOH) and aqueous H2O2 as the terminal oxidants.

DNA and bovine serum albumin protein (BSA) interaction of antitumor supramolecular nickel(II) complex: Inference for drug design

To explore the therapeutic potential of supramolecular nickel(II) Schiff base self-assemble complexes, the Schiff base ligand (N, N′-bis(salicylidene)-1,3-diamino-2-propanol) and its Ni(II) complex [Ni2(H2L)2(NCS)2(CH3OH)2](CH3OH)2 were synthesized. Characterization by X-ray crystallography (for the complex), FT-IR, UV–Vis spectroscopy, 1HNMR and elemental analysis (CHN) were performed. Single-crystal X-ray structure of the complex exhibited a distorted octahedral geometry in which each nickel(II) center, in the asymmetric unit, was six coordinated with three N atoms and three O atoms (from Schiff base ligand, methanol and NCS). In vitro Fish Sperm DNA (FS-DNA) and Bovine Serum Albumin (BSA) binding studies of the complex employed UV–Vis and fluorescence spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, viscosity measurement and molecular docking. The complex indicated a good binding propensity to BSA and was also bound to FS-DNA, preferably via intercalation. The outputs of the molecular docking study confirmed the experimental results. The complex was found to exert high anticancer activity against the gastric and prostate cancerous cells with putative selective anticancer properties. The death-induced mechanism underlying the complex is mainly related to the intercalator interactions, which may result in apoptosis-programmed cell death.

In vitro and in vivo antiproliferative activity on lung cancer of two acylhydrazone based zinc(II) complexes

Two acylhydrazone based zinc(II) complexes [Zn(HL)2Cl2(CH3OH)2] (Zn1) and [ZnL(AC)]2 (Zn2) were synthesized from 3-(1-(salicyloylhydrazono)ethyl) pyridine (HL). Single crystal X-ray structure analyses showed that complexes Zn1 and Zn2 have a zero-dimensional monomer or dimer structure. Antiproliferative activity studies revealed that Zn1 and Zn2 are both more effective against A549 cells than cisplatin. The results of the reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation assay on A549 cells showed that both Zn1 and Zn2 induced apoptosis through ROS accumulation. The apoptosis-inducing and cell cycle arrest effects of Zn1 and Zn2 on A549 cells indicated that the antitumor effect was achieved through apoptosis induction and inhibition of DNA synthesis by blocking the G0/G1 phase of the cell cycle. What’s more, the results of wound-healing assay showed that Zn1 and Zn2 could inhibit the migration of A549 cells. Western blot analysis further demonstrated that Zn1 and Zn2 induced cell apoptosis through the mitochondrial pathway, in which process, the expression level of cytochrome C, cleaved-PARP, cleaved-caspase 3 and cleaved-caspase 9 proteins increased while pro-caspase 3 and pro-caspase 9 expression decreased. In vivo anticancer evaluation demonstrated that both Zn1 and Zn2 complexes effectively inhibited tumor growth without causing significant toxicity in systemic organs.

Further Insight into the Manganese(II) 2,2′-Bipyridine-1,1′-dioxide Homoleptic Complex: Single-Crystal X-ray Structure Determination of the Perchlorate Salt and DFT Calculations

The homoleptic cationic complex formed by reacting suitable manganese(II) salts with 2,2′-bipyridine-1,1′-dioxide (bipyO2) has been subjected to several studies in the past because of its peculiar absorption and electrochemical features. Here, the first single-crystal X-ray structure determination of a [Mn(bipyO2)3]2+ salt is reported, where the charge of the cation is balanced by perchlorate anions. The hydrated salt [Mn(bipyO2)3](ClO4)2 crystallizes in the monoclinic system (P21/n space group) and the asymmetric unit contains three cationic complexes and six perchlorate anions. The environment of the manganese(II) ions is best described as octahedral, with scarce variations among the three cations in the asymmetric unit. The bipyO2 ligands exhibit κ2 coordination mode, forming seven-membered metallacycles. The X-ray outcomes have been used as the starting point for DFT and TDDFT calculations, aimed to elucidate the charge transfer origin of the noticeable absorption in the visible range. The MLCT nature is confirmed by the hole and electron distributions associated with the spin-allowed transitions. DFT calculations on the related manganese(III) complex indicate that the geometry of [Mn(bipyO2)3]2+ changes only slightly upon oxidation, in agreement with the reversible electrochemical behaviour experimentally observed.

Unusual Stabilisation of Remarkably Bent Tetra-Cationic Tetra-radical Intermolecular Fe(III) μ-Oxo Tetranuclear Complexes.

A hitherto unknown series of air stable, π-conjugated, remarkably bent tetra-cation tetra-radical intermolecular Fe(III) μ-oxo tetranuclear complex, isolated from the dication diradical diiron(III) porphyrin dimers, has been synthesised and spectroscopically characterised along with single crystal X-ray structure determination of two such molecules. These species facilitate long-range charge/radical delocalisation through the bridge across the entire tetranuclear unit manifesting an unusually intense NIR band. Assorted spin states of Fe(III) centres are stabilised within these unique tetranuclear frameworks: terminal six-coordinate iron centres stabilise the admixed intermediate spin states while the central five-coordinate iron centres stabilise the high-spin states. Variable temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements indicated strong antiferromagnetic coupling for the Fe(III)-O-Fe(III) unit while the exchange interactions between the Fe centres and the porphyrin π-cation radicals are weaker as supported both by magnetic data and DFT calculations. The nature of orbital overlap between the SOMOs of Fe(III) and π* orbital of the porphyrin was found to rationalise the observed exchange coupling, establishing such a complex magnetic exchange in this tetranuclear model with a significant bioinorganic relevance.

Diverse Reactivity of Amidinate-Supported Boron Centers with the Hypersilyl Anion and Access to a Monomeric Secondary Boron Hydride.

Diverse reactivity of the bulky tris(trimethylsilyl)silyl substituent [Si(SiMe3)3], also known as the hypersilyl group, was observed for amidinate-supported dichloro- and phenylchloroborane complexes. Treatment of the dichloroborane with potassium tris(trimethylsilyl)silyl led to the activation of the backbone β-carbon center and formation of saturated four-membered heterocyclic chloroboranes R'{Si(SiMe3)3}C(NR)2BCl [R' = Ph, R = Cy (3); R' = Ph, R = iPr (6); R' = tBu, R = Cy (8)], whereas the four-membered amidinate hypersilyl-substituted phenyl borane 4 {PhC(NCy)2B(Ph)[Si(SiMe3)3]} was observed for the case of an amidinate-supported phenylchloroborane. The highly deshielded 11B NMR spectroscopic resonance and the distinct difference in the 29Si NMR spectrum confirmed the presence of a σ-donating hypersilyl effect on compounds 3, 6, and 8. Reaction of 3 with the Lewis acid AlCl3 led to the formation of complex 11 in which an unusual cleavage of one of the C-N bonds of the amidinate backbone is observed. Nucleophilic substitution at the boron center of saturated chloroborane 3 with phenyllithium generated the phenylborane derivative 12, whereas the secondary monomeric boron hydride 13 was observed after treatment with alane (AlH3). All compounds (2-13) have been fully characterized by NMR spectroscopy and single-crystal X-ray structure determination studies.

Crystal structure, spectral characterization, in vitro, molecular docking and DFT studies of pyranopyrazole derivatives

Two Pyranopyrazole derivatives, namely, methyl-11-(2-chlorophenyl)-16-methyl-8-[(4-methylbenzene)sulfonyl], -14-phenyl-12-oxa-8,14,15-triazatetracyclo[8.7.0.02,7.013,17] heptadeca-2(7), 3, 5, 13(17), 15-pentaene-10-carboxylate, C38H37N3S1O5 and butyl‑16-methyl-8-[(4-methylbenzene)sulfonyl]-11,14-diphenyl-12-oxa-8,14,15-triazatetracyclo[8.7.0.02,7.013,17] heptadeca-2(7),3,5, 13(17), 15-pentaene-10-carboxylate, C35 H30 Cl N3 O5 S with phenyl and chlorophenyl substitutions were synthesized successfully, and crystallized by the slow evaporation technique. The pyranopyrazole derivatives were characterized by spectroscopic techniques including UV–visible, FTIR, and mass spectroscopy, and their 3D-structural arrangements were also confirmed by single crystal XRD studies. Both compounds crystallize in the triclinic crystal system with the centrosymmetric space group P-1, which is identified by the X-ray single-crystal structure. These compounds were examined for in vitro and molecular docking studies with the enzymes 1hny, 1pgg, and 4 cox and thus correspond to diabetes and inflammation. The observed results showed better binding energy and inhibition constants for inflammation involving enzymes. The chemical reactivity and electronic arrangement of the compounds have been revealed by DFT studies.

Na3Ge2P3: A Zintl Phase Featuring [P3Ge-GeP3] Dimers as Building Blocks.

Recently, ternary lithium phosphidotetrelates have attracted interest particularly due to their high ionic conductivities, while corresponding sodium and heavier alkali metal compounds have been less investigated. Hence, we report the synthesis and characterization of the novel ternary sodium phosphidogermanate Na3Ge2P3, which is readily accessible via ball milling of the elements and subsequent annealing. According to single crystal X-ray structure determination, Na3Ge2P3 crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P21/c (no. 14.) with unit cell parameters of a = 7.2894(6) Å, b = 14.7725(8) Å, c = 7.0528(6) Å, β = 106.331(6)° and forms an unprecedented two-dimensional polyanionic network in the b/c plane of interconnected [P3Ge-GeP3] building units. The system can also be interpreted as differently sized ring structures that interconnect and form a two-dimensional network. A comparison with related ternary compounds from the corresponding phase system as well as with the binary compound GeP shows that the polyanionic network of Na3Ge2P3 resembles an intermediate step between highly condensed cages and discrete polyanions, which highlights the structural variety of phosphidogermanates. The structure is confirmed by 23Na- and 31P-MAS NMR measurements and Raman spectroscopy. Computational investigation of the electronic structure reveals that Na3Ge2P3 is an indirect band gap semiconductor with a band gap of 2.9 eV.

Solution structure, crystal structure, Hirshfeld surface analysis of copper(II) diamide species as an optical chemical sensor

Optical chemical sensors are promising tools for the detection of metal ions in various samples. Copper(II) has received significant attention among metal ions due to its toxic nature and widespread applications in various industrial processes. In recent years, several optical chemical sensors have been developed to detect copper(II) with high sensitivity and selectivity. This paper describes the spectrophotometric determination of trace amounts of copper(II) using N1-(2-aminoethyl)-N2-((pyridin-2-yl)methyl)oxalamide (H2(555)NH2) as an optical chemical sensor. The protonation and formation constants of the Cu(II)/(H2(555)NH2) system were determined at 25 °C and the ionic strength of 0.15 mol dm−3 using glass electrode potentiometry. The structures of the different species, present in solution at different pH values, were determined using UV–vis, 1H NMR, and EPR spectroscopic techniques. At pH 5, the [Cu(H2(555)NH2)]2+ species was formed with the Cu(II) coordinated to the pyridole nitrogen and the terminal amine. Above pH 8, [Cu(H2(555)NH2)H-2] is the most predominant species in solution. Here the Cu(II) coordinates to all four nitrogen atoms. In the solid state, a dinuclear complex, [Cu(H(55)NH3)Cl]2[Cu(H2O)2(NO3)2Cl2]H2O, was formed. Single crystal X-ray structure showed the Cu(II) to be coordinated to the pyridine and the amide N-atoms in addition to an O-atom from one of the two carbonyl groups. The coordination environment was completed by two bridged chloride ions to give a slightly distorted trigonal bipyramidal coordination geometry around the copper centre. The amine was not coordinated. The proposed sensor was successfully applied to determine copper(II) in real samples, with recoveries ranging from 10−5 to 10−3 mol/dm−3. Using H2(555)NH2 as an optical chemical sensor emerged as a powerful tool for detecting copper(II) ions in different aqueous samples.

Chiral Thianthrenes.

The absolute configuration and stability of two thianthrene chiral sulfoxides has been determined by means of X-ray single-crystal structure determinations. The analyses and configurations allow verification that the diastereomeric sulfoxides are stable in solution and are not interconverting, which has been suggested in some studies of sulfoxides. The two thianthrene sulfoxides have slightly different Rf values, which allowed their separation using flash chromatography on silica. The spots run back-to-back, which posed a challenge for their separation. The pure, separated compounds in solution remain as separate, single spots on a Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC) plate.

Dual-Channel Imine-Amine Photoisomerization in a Benzoimidazole and Benzothiazole Coupled System: Photophysics and Applications.

A molecule, namely 2-(1H-benzo[d]imidazol-2-yl)-6-(benzo[d]thiazol-2-yl)-4-bromophenol (BIBTB), having a two-way proton transfer unit of thiazole and imidazole moieties was synthesized and characterized by NMR, electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS), and single-crystal diffraction studies. Steady state and time-resolved spectral studies of BIBTB support excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT), causing imine-amine tautomerization through a two-way 6-membered H-bonded ring, where the N atoms of benzothiazole and the benzoimidazole unit are involved as proton acceptor sites. Interestingly, in a nonpolar and moderately polar solvent, photoisomerization in BIBTB is found to be favored toward the thiazole ring, whereas in a highly polar solvent, it is favored toward the imidazole ring. A spectral comparison of BIBTB with judicially designed molecules 2-(benzo[d]thiazol-2-yl)-4-bromophenol (HBT) and 2-(1H-benzo[d]imidazol-2-yl)-4-bromophenol (BIB) supports these inferences. Theoretical calculation using the Density Functional Theory (DFT) at CAM-B3LYP/6-311+G(d,p) level supports the existence of two low-energy 6-membered hydrogen-bonded planar conformers in the ground state in the gas phase and in solvents of different dielectrics. The potential energy curves (PECs) calculated along the proton transfer (PT) coordinate are found to have a high energy barrier in the ground state and to be barrierless or have a low energy barrier in the excited state for both the forms. The calculated vertical excitation and the emission energy from the relaxed excited and PT states show good correlation with the experimental spectral data. Aggregation of BIBTB in water with red shifted emission was established from X-ray single-crystal structure analysis, solid state emission, and Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS) measurement. The molecule BIBTB also acts as a fluorescence probe for sensing the explosive picric acid in the subnano scale and can be used to determine the proportion of water in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) solvent.
