Tuning structural modulation and magnetic properties in metal-organic coordination polymers [CH3NH3]CoxNi1-x(HCOO)3.

Three solid solutions of [CH3NH3]CoxNi1-x(HCOO)3, with x = 0.25 (1), x = 0.50 (2) and x = 0.75 (3), were synthesized and their nuclear structures and magnetic properties were characterized using single-crystal neutron diffraction and magnetization measurements. At room temperature, all three compounds crystallize in the Pnma orthorhombic space group, akin to the cobalt and nickel end series members. On cooling, each compound undergoes a distinct series of structural transitions to modulated structures. Compound 1 exhibits a phase transition to a modulated structure analogous to the pure Ni compound [Cañadillas-Delgado, L., Mazzuca, L., Fabelo, O., Rodríguez-Carvajal, J. & Petricek, V. (2020). Inorg. Chem. 59, 17896-17905], whereas compound 3 maintains the behaviour observed in the pure Co compound reported previously [Canadillas-Delgado, L., Mazzuca, L., Fabelo, O., Rodriguez-Velamazan, J. A. & Rodriguez-Carvajal, J. (2019). IUCrJ, 6, 105-115], although in both cases the temperatures at which the phase transitions occur differ slightly from the pure phases. Monochromatic neutron diffraction measurements showed that the structural evolution of 2 diverges from that of either parent compound, with competing hydrogen bond interactions that drive the modulation throughout the series, producing a unique sequence of phases. It involves two modulated phases below 96 (3) and 59 (3) K, with different q vectors, similar to the pure Co compound (with modulated phases below 128 and 96 K); however, it maintains the modulated phase below magnetic order [at 22.5 (7) K], resembling the pure Ni compound (which presents magnetic order below 34 K), resulting in an improper modulated magnetic structure. Despite these large-scale structural changes, magnetometry data reveal that the bulk magnetic properties of these solid solutions form a linear continuum between the end members. Notably, doping of the metal site in these solid solutions allows for tuning of bulk magnetic properties, including magnetic ordering temperature, transition temperatures and the nature of nuclear phase transitions, through adjustment of metal ratios.

Analysis of magnetic structures in JANA2020.

JANA2020 is a program developed for the solution and refinement of regular, twinned, modulated, and composite crystal structures. In addition, JANA2020 also includes a magnetic option for solving magnetic structures from powder and single-crystal neutron diffraction data. This tool uses magnetic space and superspace symmetry to describe commensurate and incommensurate magnetic structures. The basics of the underlying formulation of magnetic structure factors and the use of magnetic symmetry for handling modulated and non-modulated magnetic structures are presented here, together with the general features of the magnetic tool. Examples of structures solved in the magnetic option of JANA2020 are given to illustrate the operation and capabilities of the program.

Unique magnetic structure of the vdW antiferromagnet VBr3

VBr3 is a van der Waals antiferromagnet below the Néel temperature of 26.5 K with a saturation moment of 1.2 µB/f.u. above the metamagnetic transitions detected in the in-plane and out-of-plane directions. To reveal the AFM structure of VBr3 experimentally, we performed a single-crystal neutron diffraction study on a large high-quality crystal. The collected data confirmed a slight monoclinic distortion of the high-temperature rhombohedral structure below 90 K. The magnetic structure was, nevertheless, investigated within the R-3 model. The antiferromagnetic structure propagation vector k = (1, 0, ½) was revealed. In an attempt to determine the magnetic structure, 72 non-equivalent magnetic reflections were recorded. The experimental data were confronted with the magnetic space groups dictated by the R-3 lattice symmetry and propagation vector. The best agreement between the experimental data and the magnetic structure model was obtained for the space group P-1.1′_c. The magnetic unit cell of the proposed unique antiferromagnetic structure with periodicity 6c is built from two identical triple layers antiferromagnetically coupled along the c axis. Each triple layer comprises a Néel antiferromagnetic monolayer sandwiched between two antiferromagnetically coupled ferromagnetic monolayers.

Ferrimagnetic structure in the high-pressure phase of α−Mn

The α−Mn phase exhibits a large anomalous Hall effect (AHE) in its pressure-induced weak ferromagnetic (WFM) state, despite its relatively small spontaneous magnetization of ∼0.02μB/Mn. To understand the underlying mechanism behind this AHE, we performed single crystal neutron diffraction measurements at 2.0 GPa to determine the magnetic structure of the WFM phase. Our investigation reveals a ferrimagnetic structure characterized by nearly collinear magnetic moments aligned along the [001] direction at sites I, II, III-1, and IV-1. In contrast, the small moments at sites III-2 and IV-2 lie within the (001) plane. The calculated net magnetization of this magnetic structure, (−0.08±0.10)μB/Mn atom, is in agreement with the experimentally determined spontaneous magnetization. The observation of a magnetic reflection at q=(0,0,0) satisfies a key condition for the emergence of the AHE. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Correlation of structural and magnetic properties of RFeO3 ( R=Dy,Lu )

In orthoferrites the rare-earth (R) ion has a big impact on structural and magnetic properties; in particular, the ionic size influences the octahedral tilt and the R3+−Fe3+ interaction modifies properties like the spin reorientation. Growth-induced strain in thin films is another means to modify materials properties since the sign of strain affects the bond length and therefore directly the orbital interaction. Our study focuses on epitaxially grown (010)-oriented DyFeO3 and LuFeO3 thin films, thereby investigating the impact of compressive lattice strain on the magnetically active Dy3+ and magnetically inactive Lu3+ compared to uniaxially strained single-crystal DyFeO3. The DyFeO3 films exhibits a shift of more than 20 K in spin-reorientation temperatures, maintain the antiferromagnetic Γ4 phase of the Fe lattice below the spin reorientation, and show double-step hysteresis loops for both in-plane directions between 5 and 390 K. This is the signature of an Fe-spin-induced ferromagnetic Dy3+ lattice above the Néel temperature of the Dy. The observed shift in the film spin reorientation temperatures vs lattice strain is in good agreement with isostatic single-crystal neutron diffraction experiments with a rate of 2 K/kbar. Giant Room-Temperature Topological Hall Effect in a Square-Net Ferromagnet LaMn2Ge2.

A topological magnetic material showcases a multitude of intriguing properties resulting from the compelling interplay between topology and magnetism. These include notable phenomena such as a large anomalous Nernst effect (ANE), an anomalous Hall effect (AHE), and a topological Hall effect (THE). In most cases, topological transport phenomena are prevalent at temperatures considerably lower than room temperature, presenting a challenge for practical applications. However, the noncollinear ferromagnetic (FM) LaMn2Ge2, characterized by a Mn square-net lattice and a notably high Curie temperature (TC) of approximately 325 K, defies this trend as a topological semimetal. This work observes a giant topological Hall resistivity, , of ≈4.5 µΩ cm at room temperature when the angle between the applied field and the c-axis is 75°, which is significantly higher than state-of-the-art materials with noncoplanar spin structures. The single crystal neutron diffraction measurements agree with an incommensurate conical magnetic structure as the ground state. This observation suggests the enhanced spin chirality resulting from the noncoplanar spin configuration when the applied field is away from the magnetic easy axis as the origin of a large contribution to the observed THE. The findings unequivocally demonstrate that the FM LaMn2Ge2 holds great promise as a potential topological semimetal for spintronic applications even at room temperature.

A neutron diffraction study of the hydrous borate inderborite, CaMg[B3O3(OH)5]2(H2O)4·2H2O

Abstract The crystal chemistry of inderborite, a B-rich mineral (B2O3 ~41 wt%) with ideal formula CaMg[B3O3(OH)5]2·6H2O or CaMg[B3O3(OH)5]2(H2O)4·2H2O from the Inder Deposit, Kazakhstan, was re-investigated by a multi-methodological approach (single-crystal X-ray and neutron diffraction, electron probe micro-analysis in wavelength-dispersive mode, laser ablation multi-collector inductively mass spectrometry). The experimental findings show that the real chemical formula of inderborite from the Inder Deposit is virtually identical to the ideal one: the fraction of potential isomorphic substituents is insignificant. Boron is, therefore, the only industrially relevant element occurring in this mineral. The in situ B isotope composition of the Inder inderborite shows enrichment in the heavy 11B isotope, giving a weighted mean δ11BNIST951 of +35.15 ± 0.49 ‰ (2σ, N = 6). Such a positive δ11B value falls within the range of values in which the source of boron is ascribable to marine reservoirs rather than to terrestrial ones. X-ray (at 293 K) and neutron (at 20 K) structure refinements confirm that the principal building block unit of the structure is a [B3O3(OH)5]2– ring, consisting of two BO2(OH)2 tetrahedra (B-ion in sp3 electronic configuration) and one planar-triangular BO2OH group (B-ion in sp2 electronic configuration). In the [B3O3(OH)5]2– ring, all the oxygen atoms that are not shared between two boron atoms are protonated. The building units share corners with the CaO2(OH)4(OH2)2 polyhedra and Mg(OH)4(OH2)2 octahedra, forming hetero-polyhedral sheets parallel to (100). Subsequent hetero-polyhedral sheets are mutually connected only by H-bonding interactions, even mediated by the zeolitic (“interstitial”) H2O molecules. Ten out of 11 independent oxygen sites in the structure of inderborite are involved in H-bonds as donors or acceptors, and this reflects the pervasive effect of the H-bonding network. The role played by the complex H-bond network is expected to be substantial on the stability of the crystalline edifice, having effects within the single hetero-polyhedral sheet, between subsequent sheets, and in the bonding with the interstitial zeolitic H2O molecules. Finally, the potential utilizations of inderborite, as a B-bearing mineral, are discussed.

Single-crystal neutron diffraction study on the Ho13.6Au61.1Al25.3 quasicrystal approximant

A single-crystal neutron diffraction study was conducted on a Ho13.6Au61.1Al25.3 Tsai-type quasicrystal approximant synthesised by the self-flux method. The magnetisation measurements reveal a ferrimagnetic behaviour with a transition below 6 K. In agreement with the magnetometry data, a non-coplanar whirling spin order in the icosahedral clusters around the crystallographic [1 1 1] direction with a ferrimagnetic arrangement was observed from single-crystal neutron diffraction measurements below 5.5 K. The magnetic structure of Ho13.6Au61.1Al25.3 is compared to the previously published magnetic structures of related RE-Au-SM (RE = Tb and Ho; SM = Al, Si and Ga) systems.

Hydrogen incorporation mechanism in the lower-mantle bridgmanite

Abstract Bridgmanite, the most abundant mineral in the lower mantle, can play an essential role in deep-Earth hydrogen storage and circulation processes. To better evaluate the hydrogen storage capacity and its substitution mechanism in bridgmanite occurring in nature, we have synthesized high-quality single-crystal bridgmanite with a composition of (Mg0.88Fe0.052+Fe0.053+Al0.03)(Si0.88Al0.11H0.01)O3 at nearly water-saturated environments relevant to topmost lower mantle pressure and temperature conditions. The crystallographic site position of hydrogen in the synthetic (Fe,Al)-bearing bridgmanite is evaluated by a time-of-flight single-crystal neutron diffraction scheme, together with supporting evidence from polarized infrared spectroscopy. Analysis of the results shows that the primary hydrogen site has an OH bond direction nearly parallel to the crystallographic b axis of the orthorhombic bridgmanite lattice, where hydrogen is located along the line between two oxygen anions to form a straight geometry of covalent and hydrogen bonds. Our modeled results show that hydrogen is incorporated into the crystal structure via coupled substitution of Al3+ and H+ simultaneously exchanging for Si4+, which does not require any cation vacancy. The concentration of hydrogen evaluated by secondary-ion mass spectrometry and neutron diffraction is ~0.1 wt% H2O and consistent with each other, showing that neutron diffraction can be an alternative quantitative means for the characterization of trace amounts of hydrogen and its site occupancy in nominally anhydrous minerals.

On the crystal-chemistry of inderite, Mg[B3O3(OH)5](H2O)4·H2O

The crystal chemistry of inderite, a hydrous borate with known ideal formula MgB3O3(OH)5·5H2O from the Kramer deposit, was re-investigated by electron probe micro-analysis in wavelength dispersive mode, laser ablation-(multi collector-)inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry and single-crystal neutron diffraction. The chemical data prove that the real composition of the investigated inderite is substantially identical to the ideal one, with insignificant content of potential isomorphic substituents, so that, excluding B, inderite does not contain any other industrially-relevant element (e.g., Li concentration is lower than 2.5 wt ppm, Be or REE lower than 0.1 wt ppm). The average δ11BNIST951 value of ca. − 7 ‰ lies within the range of values in which the source of boron is ascribable to terrestrial reservoirs (e.g., hydrothermal brines), rather than to marine ones. Neutron structure refinements, at both 280 and 10 K, confirm that the building units of the structure of inderite consist of: two BO2(OH)2 tetrahedra (B-ion in sp3 electronic configuration) and one BO2(OH) triangle (B-ion in sp2 electronic configuration), linked by corner-sharing to form a (soroborate) B3O3(OH)5 ring, and a Mg-octahedron Mg(OH)2(OH2)4. The B3O3(OH)5 ring and the Mg-octahedron are connected, by corner-sharing, to form an isolated Mg(H2O)4B3O3(OH)5 (molecular) cluster. The tri-dimensional edifice of inderite is therefore built by heteropolyhedral Mg(H2O)4B3O3(OH)5 clusters mutually connected by H-bonds, mediated by the zeolitic (“interstitial”) H2O molecules lying between the clusters, so that the correct form of the chemical formula of inderite is Mg[B3O3(OH)5](H2O)4·H2O, rather than MgB3O3(OH)5·5H2O. All the thirteen independent oxygen sites of the structure are involved in H-bonding, as donors or as acceptors. This confirms the pervasive nature and the important role played by the H-bonding network on the structural stability of inderite. The differences between the crystal structure of the two dimorphs inderite and kurnakovite are discussed.

Exploring crucial technological advancements in Anger-Camera neutron detectors for single crystal neutron diffraction

In accordance with the second phase construction blueprint for the China Spallation Neutron Source (CSNS-II), the proposal includes the establishment of a single crystal neutron diffractometer. This apparatus necessitates a neutron detector array spanning over 1 m2 and capable of covering neutron diffraction angles from 20° to 160°. Additionally, the detector's position resolution must better than 1 mm × 1 mm. To meet such requirements, a scintillator neutron detector based on the Anger-Camera principle was designed. The detector is composed of a 6LiF/ZnS (Ag) scintillation screen, optical guide, silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) array and self-design composite compression readout electronic systems. A detector prototype, featuring a detection area of 50 mm × 50 mm, was fabricated and subjected to testing at the BL20 neutron test line in the China Spallation Neutron Source (CSNS). The detector system achieved an optimal position resolution of 0.6 mm, while the maximum count rate was approximately 20 kHz. Moreover, the detector's Bragg edge imaging capability was preliminarily investigated using stainless steel samples, demonstrating its future potential for Bragg edge transmission imaging. The proposed detector demonstrates promising potential as a candidate for the single crystal diffractometer in CSNS-II.

New insight into tuning magnetic phases of RMn6Sn6 kagome metals

Predicting magnetic ordering in kagome compounds offers the possibility of harnessing topological or flat-band physical properties through tuning of the magnetism. Here, we examine the magnetic interactions and phases of ErMn6Sn6 which belongs to a family of RMn6Sn6, R = Sc, Y, Gd–Lu, compounds with magnetic kagome Mn layers, triangular R layers, and signatures of topological properties. Using results from single-crystal neutron diffraction and mean-field analysis, we find that ErMn6Sn6 sits close to the critical boundary separating the spiral-magnetic and ferrimagnetic ordered states typical for non-magnetic versus magnetic R layers, respectively. Finding interlayer magnetic interactions and easy-plane Mn magnetic anisotropy consistent with other members of the family, we predict the existence of a number of temperature and field dependent collinear, noncollinear, and noncoplanar magnetic phases. We show that thermal fluctuations of the Er magnetic moment, which act to weaken the Mn-Er interlayer magnetic interaction and quench the Er magnetic anisotropy, dictate magnetic phase stability. Our results provide a starting point and outline a multitude of possibilities for studying the behavior of Dirac fermions in RMn6Sn6 compounds with control of the Mn spin orientation and real-space spin chirality.

Magnetic structure, excitations, and field-induced transitions in the honeycomb lattice compound Er2Si2O7

We investigate the magnetic properties of the monoclinic D-type Er2Si2O7 with a distorted honeycomb lattice using powder and single-crystal neutron scattering techniques, as well as single-crystal magnetization measurements. The powder neutron diffraction shows that below the ordering temperature, TN=1.85K, the compound forms a q=0 antiferromagnetic structure with four sublattices. For H∥a, magnetization measurements reveal a narrow but clearly visible plateau at one-third of the magnetization saturation value. The plateau's stabilization is accompanied by a significant increase of the magnetic unit cell, as the magnetic peaks with fractional indices are observed in single-crystal neutron diffraction experiments. At low temperatures, the inelastic neutron scattering measurements reveal the presence of low-energy, almost dispersionless excitations. Their spectrum is sensitive to the applied field, it significantly softens on the magnetization plateau, and demonstrates the behavior expected for a noncollinear Ising antiferromagnet away from the plateau. Emergence of the isotropic Kitaev honeycomb lattice α− RuCl3 and its magnetic properties

We present a comprehensive investigation of the crystal and magnetic structures of the van der Waals antiferromagnet α− RuCl3 using single crystal x-ray and neutron diffraction. The crystal structure at room temperature is a monoclinic ( C2/m ). However, with decreasing temperature, a remarkable first-order structural phase transition is observed, leading to the emergence of a rhombohedral ( R3ˉ ) structure characterized by three-fold rotational symmetry forming an isotropic honeycomb lattice. On further cooling, a zigzag-type antiferromagnetic order develops below TN=6∼6.6 K. The critical exponent of the magnetic order parameter was determined to be β=0.11(1) , which is close to the two-dimensional Ising model. Additionally, the angular dependence of the magnetic critical field of the zigzag antiferromagnetic order for the polarized ferromagnetic phase reveals a six-fold rotational symmetry within the ab− plane. These findingsreflect the symmetry associated with the Ising-like bond-dependent Kitaev spin interactions and underscore the universality of the Kitaev interaction-dominated antiferromagnetic system.

Observation and enhancement through alkali metal doping of p-type conductivity in the layered oxyselenides Sr2ZnO2Cu2Se2 and Ba2Zn1-x O2-x Cu2Se2.

The optoelectronic properties of two layered copper oxyselenide compounds, with nominal composition Sr2ZnO2Cu2Se2 and Ba2ZnO2Cu2Se2, have been investigated to determine their suitability as p-type conductors. The structure, band gaps and electrical conductivity of pristine and alkali-metal-doped samples have been determined. We find that the strontium-containing compound, Sr2ZnO2Cu2Se2, adopts the expected tetragonal Sr 2 Mn 3 SbO 2 structure with I4/mmm symmetry, and has a band gap of 2.16 eV, and a room temperature conductivity of 4.8 × 10-1 S cm-1. The conductivity of the compound could be increased to 4.2 S cm-1 when sodium doped to a nominal composition of Na0.1Sr1.9ZnO2Cu2Se2. In contrast, the barium containing material was found to have a small zinc oxide deficiency, with a sample dependent compositional range of Ba2Zn1-x O2-x Cu2Se2 where 0.01 < x < 0.06, as determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction and powder neutron diffraction. The barium-containing structure could also be modelled using the tetragonal I4/mmm structure, but significant elongation of the oxygen displacement ellipsoid along the Zn-O bonds in the average structure was observed. This indicated that the oxide ion position was better modelled as a disordered split site with a displacement to change the local zinc coordination from square planar to linear. Electron diffraction data confirmed that the oxide site in Ba2Zn1-x O2-x Cu2Se2 does not adopt a long range ordered arrangement, but also that the idealised I4/mmm structure with an unsplit oxide site was not consistent with the extra reflections observed in the electron diffractograms. The band gap and conductivity of Ba2Zn1-x O2-x Cu2Se2 were determined to be 2.22 eV and 2.0 × 10-3 S cm-1 respectively. The conductivity could be increased to 1.5 × 10-1 S cm-1 with potassium doping in K0.1Ba1.9Zn1-x O2-x Cu2Se2. Hall measurements confirmed that both materials were p-type conductors with holes as the dominant charge carriers.

Magnetic structure and properties of the honeycomb antiferromagnet [Na(OH2)3]Mn(NCS)3.

We report the magnetic structure and properties of a thiocyanate-based honeycomb magnet [Na(OH2)3]Mn(NCS)3 which crystallises in the unusual low-symmetry trigonal space group P3̄. Magnetic measurements on powder samples show this material is an antiferromagnet (ordering temperature TN,mag = 18.1(6) K) and can be described by nearest neighbour antiferromagnetic interactions J = -11.07(4) K. A method for growing neutron-diffraction sized single crystals (>10 mm3) is demonstrated. Low temperature neutron single crystal diffraction shows that the compound adopts the collinear antiferromagnetic structure with TN,neut = 18.94(7) K, magnetic space group P3̄'. Low temperature second-harmonic generation (SHG) measurements provide no evidence of breaking of the centre of symmetry.

Characterization of Water Structure and Phase Behavior within Metal-Organic Nanotubes.

Water behavior under nanoconfinement varies significantly from that in the bulk but also depends on the nature of the pore walls. Hybrid compound offers the ideal system to explore water behavior in complex materials, so a model metal-organic nanotube (UMONT) material was utilized to explore the behavior of water between 100 and 293 K. Single-crystal X-ray and neutron diffraction revealed the formation of a filled Ice-I arrangement that was previously predicted to only occur under high pressures. 17O NMR spectra suggest that the onset of melting for the water in the UMONT channels occurs at 98 K and the presence of ice-like water up to 293 K, indicating that the complete ice-water transition does not occur before dehydration of the material. Overall, the water behavior differs significantly from hydrophobic single-walled carbon nanotubes indicating precise control over water can be achieved through rational design of hybrid materials.

Structure and properties of NdCuGa[formula omitted] single crystals

This manuscript reports on the structural and magnetic properties of NdCuGa3 using powder and single crystal X-ray diffraction (XRD), zero-field single crystal neutron diffraction, magnetization, and specific heat measurements. Our XRD on a single crystal specimen of NdCuGa3 confirmed that it crystallizes in the tetragonal BaNiSi3-type structure. A magnetic phase transition at TN= 3.3 K is assessed using specific heat and ac magnetic susceptibility measurements. No additional anomaly below TN down to 50 mK was detected by performing specific heat measurements. Neutron single crystal diffraction data collected at T= 300 mK confirm the antiferromagnetic phase below TN= 3.3 K with the propagation vector τ→= (0.2, 0, 0). Possible magnetic structure solutions of NdCuGa3 are discussed.

Incommensurate magnetic structure of CrAs at low temperatures and high pressures.

The magnetic structure of chromium arsenide CrAs is studied with neutron powder diffraction at ambient pressure in the temperature range 1.5-300 K as well as with neutron single-crystal diffraction at 2 K and 0.12 GPa. The material undergoes an anti-isostructural phase transition at TN = 267 K and atmospheric conditions, in which both orthorhombic phases have the same space-group symmetry (Pnma, Z = 4) but different distortions of the parent hexagonal structure of the NiAs type (P63/mmc, Z = 2). The magnetic structure below TN is incommensurate with the propagation vector k = (0, 0, kc). At ambient pressure, the component kc decreases from kc = 0.3807 (7) at 260 K to kc = 0.3531 (6) at 50 K. Below this temperature, it is basically constant. With increasing pressure at 2 K, kc is also constant within standard uncertainties [kc = 0.353 (2)]. For the analysis of the magnetic structure, a group-theoretical approach based on the space group of the nuclear structure and its subgroups is used. To avoid falling into false minima in the refinements, a random search for magnetic moments in the models is implemented. In the literature, the magnetic structure has been determined on the basis of powder diffraction data as a double helix propagating along the c axis. Although this double-helical model leads to satisfactory agreement factors for our powder data, it does not reproduce the intensities of the magnetic satellite reflections measured on single-crystal data in a satisfactory way and can therefore be discarded. Instead, several other models are found that lead to better agreement. Each of them is spiral-like with directional components in all three directions and with no spin-density wave character that would cause a non-constant magnetic moment. In all these models, the ordering of the spins is neither a pure helix nor a pure cycloid. Instead, the unit vectors of the spin rotation planes make an angle α, 0° < α < 90°, with respect to the c* direction. The model in superspace group P21.1'(α0γ)0s yields the best agreement factors in the refinements of the neutron single-crystal and powder diffraction data. This model is unique as it is the only one in which all the magnetic moments rotate with the same chirality.

Benchmark Crystal Structure of Defect-Free Spinel ZnFe2O4.

Accurate structural models are of paramount importance for elucidating structure-property relationships in functional materials. Spinels (AB2O4) form a highly important family of materials with complex crystal structures, and subtle structural details have a critical bearing on understanding their physical properties. In some spinels, the space group symmetry is debated, and in general, point defects such as cation inversion and interstitials add complexity. Most studies of spinels concern powder materials, and this challenges deep structural characterization. In fact, most published spinel structures have dubious atomic displacement parameters (ADPs), which is a typical sign of problematic structural description in the refinement of diffraction data. Here, we use various X-ray and neutron diffraction techniques to establish a benchmark crystal structure for the essentially defect-free spinel ferrite ZnFe2O4, which is a widely studied frustrated magnet. It is shown that the appearance of Fd3̅m forbidden reflections in the ZnFe2O4 single-crystal neutron diffraction data is an artifact of multiple scattering rather than the loss of inversion symmetry. We then provide benchmark ADPs and demonstrate how strongly these parameters affect the refined cation inversion. The ADPs reported here may be used as reference data to test the soundness of refined structural models, possibly to constrain those based on suboptimal data quality, and thereby provide a more accurate fundamental understanding of the structure-property relationship in spinel-type materials.
