High-performance oxygen terminated synthetic single crystal diamond detector for high gamma dose rate measurement

A high-performance oxygen terminated synthetic single crystal diamond (SCD) detector (4.5 × 4.5 × 0.5 mm3) is presented. The SCD detector exhibits an extremely low leakage current value of 0.29 pA/mm2 with an electric field of 0.3 V/μm. The charge collection spectrum measured with a238Pu source (5.48 MeV α-particles) irradiation shows that the electron and hole charge collection efficiency (CCE) reach as high as 99.1% and 98.9%, with an energy resolution as low as 2.87% and 2.53%, respectively, compared to Si detector. The SCD detector shows excellent radiation hardness and stability under 60Co γ-ray irradiation with a dose rate of 12.737 kGy/h at 150 V bias and is able to withstand a cumulative dose of up to at least 9.3 kGy. The detector output in current mode is linearly related to the dynamic dose rate (0.409 Gy/h-12.737 kGy/h). Similarly, the counting rate of the detector in counting mode exhibits a strong linear variation within the range of 2.6 mGy/h-1269.36 Gy/h. Our results fully indicate that our fabricated SCD detector can be potentially applied to harsh γ irradiation scenarios, which is of guiding significance on real-time dose monitoring.

Modelling Gd-diamond and Gd-SiC neutron detectors

A custom Monte Carlo (MC) computer model was developed to simulate thermal neutron absorption in, and subsequent photon and electron emission from, natural Gd with a view to using the material as a neutron conversion layer for neutron detectors. The MC code also modelled photon and electron detection with two dissimilar detectors: a thick (500 μm) single crystal diamond detector; and a thin (5.15 μm) commercial off the shelf (COTS) 4H–SiC photodiode detector. The detectors’ quantum detection efficiencies (QE) for hard X-rays and γ-rays were relatively low in comparison to their QE for electrons, thus making it possible to collect electron spectra from the Gd layer neutron conversion products which were not overwhelmed by photon emissions from the Gd. The MC code was utilised to determine the optimal thickness of Gd for the efficient detection of a thermal neutron flux. These radiation hard and spectroscopic detectors paired with natural Gd could find utility as robust and compact thermal neutron detectors for nuclear science and engineering, space science, and other applications.

Development of diamond detector as fast neutron spectroscopy in the EAST tokamak

We report in this paper the development of the single crystal diamond detector as a fast neutron spectroscopy in the EAST tokamak. The diamond detector is used to detect the fast neutron directly without any neutron converter during the deuterium-deuterium fusion experiment, then the neutron energy spectrum is reconstructed from the recorded continuous scattered spectrum by using a deconvolution algorithm. The results indicate the capability of the diamond spectroscopy which can be used directly to monitor the fast neutron flux and energy spectrum in the EAST tokamak.

Neutron emission characterization of IPR 14 MeV neutron generator

Accelerator-based neutron sources are being developed worldwide due to their wide applications. Institute for Plasma Research in India has developed an accelerator-based high-yield 14 MeV neutron generator based on deuterium-tritium (D-T) reaction to perform fusion-related benchmark experiments. This neutron generator is designed to produce 1012 neutrons per second in both mode continuous and pulse. The emission of neutrons from an accelerator-based neutron generator is not isotropic due to target geometry and angular dependency of reaction cross-section. A detailed and accurate description of neutron source emission and distribution is required to use such a neutron generator for various experiments. The neutron generator is characterized using experiments and simulations to accomplish the request. Energy and angular distributions of emitted neutrons are measured using a calibrated single crystal diamond (SCD) detector. Experimental data of neutron distributions are used to validate source neutron definition for Monte Carlo N Particle (MCNP) simulation. An accurate model of the Titanium Tritide (TiT) target and its holder geometry is prepared for the simulation. Finally, to validate the simulation model, simulated neutron fluxes are compared with measured ones by the SCD detector. This paper discusses the methodology adopted to characterize emitted neutrons and its results.

Simultaneous measurements for fast neutron flux and tritium production rate using pulse shape discrimination and single crystal CVD diamond detector

This paper presents the development of a simultaneous measurement method for fast neutron energy spectra and tritium production rates within mixed radiation fields using a single crystal chemical vapour deposition diamond detector combined with a lithium fluoride (LiF) foil. The method involves the separation of pulses with rectangular shapes and the determination of the depth position within the single crystal diamond (SCD) struck by fast neutrons or nuclear reaction products including recoil tritons from the LiF foil based on pulse width, extracting pulse events occurred at the specific bulk region and the surface region of the SCD. Subsequently, unfolding techniques were employed to analyse the energy deposition spectrum of pulses at the specific bulk region which are induced only by fast neutrons, allowing the deduction of the fast neutron energy spectrum. To evaluate the tritium production rate, the energy deposition spectrum of pulses from events occurring at the SCD surface facing the LiF foil was analysed. By estimating the energy deposition spectrum solely induced by fast neutrons striking the SCD surface and subtracting it from the energy deposition spectrum of events at the SCD surface, the contribution of energetic ions, such as recoil tritons generated by the 6Li(n,α)3H reaction in the LiF foil, was determined. The fast neutron flux and tritium production rate obtained through this study were consistent with particle transport calculations, demonstrating the successful development of a method suitable for performance testing of fusion reactor blankets.

The single crystal diamond-based diagnostic suite of the JET tokamak for 14 MeV neutron counting and spectroscopy measurements in DT plasmas

The Joint European Torus (JET) has recently conducted its second deuterium–tritium (DT) experimental campaign DTE2, providing unique opportunity for studying both physics and engineering aspects of nuclear fusion plasmas. This also allowed the exploitation of new diagnostics and technologies that were not available during the first JET DT campaign held in 1997. Among these new instruments, the enhancement projects of the JET nuclear diagnostics lead to the development and installation of synthetic single crystal diamond detectors along different collimated line of sights. This paper describes the single crystal diamond-based diagnostic suite of the JET tokamak and the enhanced 14 MeV neutron diagnostic capabilities in terms of neutron yield and high resolution neutron spectroscopy. The diamond characterization measurements and the calibration procedure at JET are shown, together with performance of the diamond based neutron spectrometer as 14 MeV neutron yield monitor which allows the separation of 2.5 MeV and 14 MeV neutrons in trace tritium plasmas. The first high-resolution 14 MeV neutron spectroscopy measurements in neutral beam injection-heated DT plasmas are presented, allowing thermal and non-thermal neutron component separation. Prospects for the diagnose of DT burning plasmas such as ITER and SPARC will be presented.

High temperature X-ray and γ-ray spectroscopy with a diamond detector

A single crystal chemical vapour deposition diamond detector was electrically characterised and then investigated as a spectroscopic photon counting X-ray and γ-ray detector across the temperature range, T, −20 °C ≤ T ≤ 100 °C. The detector was connected to a custom-built charge-sensitive preamplifier of low electronic noise and illuminated in turn by 55Fe radioisotope X-ray and 109Cd radioisotope X-ray and γ-ray sources. In combination, the radiation sources provided characteristic soft (e.g. 5.9 keV) and hard (e.g. 22.16 keV) X-rays and 88.03 keV γ-ray emissions. The Mn Kα (5.9 keV) and Kβ (6.49 keV) X-ray emissions from the 55Fe radioisotope X-ray source were detected (and separated from the zero energy noise peak) at temperatures of −20 °C ≤ T ≤ 60 °C; the Ag Kα (22.16 and 21.99 keV) and Kβ (24.94, 24.99, and 25.46 keV) X-ray emissions and 88.03 keV γ-ray emissions were detectable across the entire temperature range investigated (−20 °C ≤ T ≤ 100 °C). The detector and the preamplifier were operated without cooling across the entire temperature range. The energy resolution (full width at half maximum) at 22.16 keV (Ag Kα1) was 4.57 keV ± 0.26 keV at 100 °C and 2.70 keV ± 0.18 keV at −20 °C. Noise analysis indicated that the combination of dielectric noise and any incomplete charge collection noise present dominated the other noise components at 5.9 keV. When the detector was illuminated with the 109Cd radioisotope X-ray and γ-ray source, a high count rate introduced parasitic effects (possibly baseline shift) which reduced the optimum shaping time of the spectrometer.

Influence of high fluence heavy ion irradiation on the performance of single crystal diamond detectors

Radiation detectors based on diamond are highly favored for particle physics research due to their superior radiation hardness. In this work, the performance of single crystal diamond detectors under high fluence heavy ion radiation has been investigated. After irradiation by Fe13+ and Xe20+ ion beams with a high particle fluence of 1.2 × 1015 cm-2, the properties of unirradiated and irradiated intrinsic single crystal chemical vapor deposition (CVD) diamond detectors are compared by means of the spectroscopic energy resolution, charge collection efficiency (CCE), mobility-lifetime (μτ) product and time response using a 241Am alpha (α) particle source. The experimental results of the unirradiated sample with respect to I-V dark current levels, showed an ohmic behaviour of the Al and Cr/Au contact, CCE of 100%, fast response with a rise time of 750 ps and a fall time of 600 ps as well as drift velocities of 6.67 × 104 m/s and 4.72 × 104 m/s for holes and electrons respectively. In the case of the irradiated samples, the CCE, μτ product and time response pulse amplitude of holes and electrons were all degraded, indicating that high density trappings for both kinds of carriers were created under the diamond crystal surface and the trapping probability of holes and electrons was equal, which was different from the previous reports in the literature where only higher trapping probability of holes were observed under heavy ions irradiation. In particular, the spectroscopic performance as well as μτ product of holes and electrons in Fe13+ irradiated sample decreased more than those in Xe20+ irradiated sample, which implied that the recombination of electrons and holes increased in Fe13+ irradiated sample with greater penetration depth than that in Xe20+ irradiated sample when radiation fluence was up to 1015 cm-2, despite the lower density of lattice vacancies in Fe13+ irradiated sample. Moreover, the rise time of holes was slightly different, but the drift velocity was basically the same as that of the unirradiated sample, and so was that of the electrons. Anyway, the presented results showed that the diamond detectors irradiated by heavy ions at a high fluence of 1015 cm-2 still retained their good spectroscopic and very fast time response properties.

Measurement of 6Li burn-up reaction rate using a single crystal CVD diamond detector under fast neutron irradiation environment

The study aimed to develop a technique for measuring the 6Li burn-up rate using a single crystal diamond (SCD) detector (SDD) made by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) with a thin lithium fluoride foil. The method relied on pulse shape discrimination (PSD) to separate pulses by nuclear reaction products of 6Li from pulses due to fast neutrons and gamma-rays.By applying the PSD method, the rectangular shape pulses induced by events occurred at the specific depth positions of the SCD, i.e., the incident surface, the ballistic center region (BCR), and the rear surface, were extracted. Thereafter, pulses occurred each specific depth position of the SCD were discriminated according to the pulse width.Due to a short range of nuclear reaction products in the SCD, pulses at the incident surface should be induced by both fast neutrons and nuclear reaction products, although pulses at the BCR are caused by fast neutron only. The study demonstrated that quantitative measurements of nuclear reaction products in the 6Li burn-up reaction under fast neutron irradiation can be achieved using only one SDD by analyzing event rates at the incident surface and in the BCR region.

Towards the use of SDD as an absolute detector for high-energy neutron measurements

As of today, the standard method employed in tokamaks for the absolute measurement of the neutron flux (thus of the nuclear fusion power) is based on activation foils, being the most robust and unbiased technique for the absolute determination of neutron fluence. However, this technique is not able to provide real-time data useful for the control of future fusion plants like DEMO. In this paper, we present some preliminary results about the R&D activity aimed at developing the Single-crystal Diamond Detectors (SDD) used for fast neutron measurements into an absolute neutron flux monitor. Tests have been conducted at the new NILE neutron source of the Rutherford-Appleton Laboratory, a facility with compact neutron generators with a maximum yield of 109 n/s and 1010 n/s for 2.5 MeV and 14 MeV neutrons, respectively. A series of neutron spectra and flux measurements have been taken with different SDD and associated DAQ. Comparisons with standard activation foils (and namely Fe, Zr, Al and Nb foils for 14 MeV neutrons and In for 2.5 MeV neutrons) and with other reference detectors are presented and discussed. Also discussed is the stability of the SDD over time when employed at high neutron rates in realistic neutron environment, and the effects of neutron irradiation on both the counting rate and detector resolution.

Fabrication of a single-crystal diamond neutron detector and its application in 14.1 MeV neutron detection in deuterium–tritium fusion experiments

A single-crystal diamond detector is fabricated to diagnose 14.1 MeV deuterium–tritium (D-T) fusion neutrons. The size of its diamond film is 4.5 mm × 4.5 mm × 500 μm. This film is sandwiched by a flat, strip-patterned gold electrode. The dark current of this detector is experimentally measured to be lower than 0.1 nA under an electric field of 30 kV cm−1. This diamond detector is used to measure D-T fusion neutrons with a flux of about 7.5 × 105 s–1 cm–2. The pronounced peak with a central energy of 8.28 MeV characterizing the reaction in the neutron energy spectrum is experimentally diagnosed, and the energy resolution is better than 1.69%, which is the best result reported so far using a diamond detector. A clear peak with a central energy of 6.52 MeV characterizing the reaction is also identified with an energy resolution of better than 7.67%.

Electrical and material effects of molten salt and temperature on diamond

An electronic grade single crystal diamond detector was tested for its chemical and electronic stability after a five day exposure to a 450 °C KCl-LiCl molten salt eutectic. After exposure to the salt, time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry confirmed that lithium diffused into the diamond. However, no degradation of the hole and electron transport properties were observed. Finally, the spectroscopic performance of a diamond detector was investigated as a function of temperature, and it was found that the spectrum started severely degrading at a temperature of 190 °C, consistent with other reports.

Thermal Neutron Measurement Capability of a Single Crystal CVD Diamond Detector near the Reactor Core Region of UTR-KINKI

Thermal neutron flux evaluation using a single crystal diamond detector (SDD) was carried out in the core region of the UTR-KINKI reactor where a mixed radiation field by thermal and fast neutrons and gamma-ray exists. The pulse shape discrimination method to extract pulses with a rectangular shape as well as a wide pulse-width was established to exclude pulses induced by gamma-rays. The SDD, using a 6LiF thermal neutron converter, is able to detect pulse events caused not only by fast neutrons but also by thermal neutrons through energy depositions into the diamond by energetic alpha and triton particles induced by thermal neutrons. Additionally, the SDD without the thermal neutron converter was used for the measurement of the energy deposition events only by fast neutrons. A comparison of the pulse counts of the SDD with or without the thermal neutron convertor deduced the energy deposition spectra by thermal neutrons. The thermal neutron flux in the core region of the UTR-KINKI reactor was evaluated to be 7.6×106 n cm−2 s−1 W−1 up to a reactor power of 1 W.

Response of diamond detectors in ultra-high dose-per-pulse electron beams for dosimetry at FLASH radiotherapy

Objective. With increasing investigation of the so-called FLASH effect, the need for accurate real time dosimetry for ultra-high dose rates is also growing. Considering the ultra-high dose-per-pulse (DPP) necessary to produce the ultra-high dose rates for investigations of the FLASH effect, real time dosimetry is a major challenge. In particular, vented ionization chambers, as used for dosimetry in conventional radiotherapy, show significant deviations from linearity with increasing DPP. This is due to recombination losses in the sensitive air volume. Solid state detectors could be an alternative. Due to their good stability of the response with regard to the accumulated dose, diamond detectors such as the microDiamond could be suitable here. The aims of this work are to investigate the response of microDiamond and adapted microDiamond prototypes in ultra-high DPP electron beams, to understand the underlying effects and to draw conclusions for further detector developments. Approach. For the study, an electron beam with a DPP up to 6.5 Gy and a pulse duration of 2.5 μs was used to fulfill the conditions under which the FLASH effect was observed. As a dose rate-independent reference, alanine dosimeters were used. Main Results. It has been shown that the commercially available microDiamond detectors have limitations in terms of linearity at ultra-high DPP. But this is not an intrinsic limitation of the detector principle. The deviations from linearity were correlated with the series resistance and the sensitivity. It could be shown that the linear range can be extended towards ultra-high DPP range by reducing the sensitivity in combination with a low series resistance of the detectors. Significance. The work shows that synthetic single crystal diamond detectors working as Schottky photodiodes are in principle suitable for FLASH-RT dosimetry at electron linear accelerators.

A Precise Measurement of D-T Neutrons With a Single-Crystal Diamond Detector

Single-crystal diamond (SCD) detectors show promise as neutron spectrometers. They have been increasingly used for neutron monitoring of high-flux deuterium plasmas. In this article, a high-performance SCD detector is exposed to D-T neutrons at different angles to measure the energy spectra. The results show that the diamond detector is stable under neutron irradiation fluence of <inline-formula xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"> <tex-math notation="LaTeX">$1.63\times10$ </tex-math></inline-formula> <sup xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">10</sup> n/cm <sup xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">2</sup> during the 2 h testing. Its detection efficiency for <sup xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">12</sup> C (n, <inline-formula xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"> <tex-math notation="LaTeX">$\alpha$ </tex-math></inline-formula> ) <sup xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">9</sup> Be is (3.31 ± 0.11) <inline-formula xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"> <tex-math notation="LaTeX">$\times \,\, 10$ </tex-math></inline-formula> <sup xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">−4</sup> counts/n, which is in good agreement with a Monte Carlo simulation predicted by a Geant4 simulation. The deviation in the detection efficiency between the simulation and experimental results is as low as 0.61%. In addition, a response matrix is created and Gaussian broadening has been applied to obtain a good alignment between the measured and simulated results. Finally, a variety of neutron spectrum unfolding methods, namely, the non-negative least-squares algorithm, the Gravel algorithm, the Gold algorithm, and the Lucy–Richardson algorithm, are applied and compared in detail, demonstrating that using a SCD detector, the precise energy distribution of the D-T neutrons from different angles can be obtained by exploiting the spectrum unfolding methods.

Silicon substrate diamond film detector for gamma dose rate measurement in a high radiation environment

A detector that can accurately measure gamma (γ) rays in a high radiation environment was developed to detect high-intensity and high-energy γ rays in deep space. Traditional semiconductor detectors cannot work in high radiation environments for a long time, and pure single-crystal diamond detectors cannot be popularised on a large scale due to their high cost. We proposed a diamond γ-radiation (SD) detector with a highly oriented diamond film structure on a highly oriented boron-doped silicon substrate to measure γ-dose rate in high radiation environments. The SD detector was developed using several microelectromechanical processes, such as microwave plasma chemical vapour deposition. Consequently, in radiation from the 12,000 Ci 60Co source, when the dose rate was 200 Gy/h, the output signal could stabilise within 1 s. Within the dose rate of 10–190 Gy/h, the output showed a linear relation with the changing dose rate. The detector sensitivity reference value was S = 2.08 × 10−20 C · cm2 at a distance of 3.61 m from the 12,000 Ci 60Co source. Our study can provide guidance for deep space γ-ray detection.

High‐Performance Single‐Crystal Diamond Detector for Accurate Pulse Shape Discrimination Based on Self‐Organizing Map Neural Networks

Enabled by a machine learning method based on self-organizing map neural networks as a proof of concept, the SCD detector has demonstrated its potential for accurate pulse shape discrimination, which can effectively distinguish particle radiations in harsh and complex radiation conditions.

High‐Performance Single‐Crystal Diamond Detector for Accurate Pulse Shape Discrimination Based on Self‐Organizing Map Neural Networks

Herein, a high‐performance single‐crystal diamond (SCD) detector (4.5 × 4.5 ×0.3 mm3) to achieve accurate pulse shape discrimination, which is critical for source tracking in harsh and complex radiation conditions, is demonstrated. Enabled by a deep learning algorithm based on self‐organizing map (SOM) neural networks, and using the transient current technique (TCT) for sampling the detector's response to γ, α, and neutron radiation fields, the SCD detector achieves high recognition accuracy of 97.51%. The SCD detector exhibits a low leakage current of 0.75 pA mm−2 under an electric field of 0.51 V μm−1, and its response to 238Pu α‐rays shows that the charge collection efficiency for electrons and holes is as high as 99.2 and 98.8% respectively, with an energy resolution as low as 1.42%. The results indicate that the high‐performance SCD detector assisted by the machine learning algorithm can effectively distinguish α‐particles and γ‐rays with a potential application in separating the neutron and γ events as well.

Characteristics of microSilicon diode detector for electron beam dosimetry.

A microSilicon™ (PTW type 60023), a new unshielded diode detector succeeding Diode E (model 60017, PTW), was characterized for electron beam dosimetry and compared with other detectors. Electron beams generated from a TrueBeam linear accelerator were measured using the microSilicon, Diode E, and microDiamond synthetic single-crystal diamond detector. Positional accuracy of microSilicon was measured by data collected in air and water. The percent depth dose (PDD), off-center ratio (OCR), dose-response linearity, dose rate dependence, and cone factors were evaluated. The PDDs were compared with data measured using a PPC40 plane-parallel ionization chamber. The maximum variations of depth of 50% and 90% of the maximum dose, and practical depth among all detectors and energies were 0.9mm. The maximum variations of the bremsstrahlung dose among all detectors and energies were within 0.3%. OCR showed good agreement within 1% for the flat and tail regions. The microSilicon detector showed a penumbra width similar to microDiamond, whereas Diode E showed the steepest penumbra shape. All detectors showed good dose-response linearity and stability against the dose rate; only Diode E demonstrated logarithmic dose rate dependency. The cone factor measured with microSilicon was within ±1% for all energies and cone sizes. We demonstrated that the characteristics of microSilicon is suitable for electron beam dosimetry. The microSilicon detector can be a good alternative for electron beam dosimetry in terms of providing an appropriate PDD curve without corrections, high spatial resolution for OCR measurements and cone factors.

Characterization of Diamond and Silicon Carbide Detectors With Fission Fragments

Experimental fission studies for reaction physics or nuclear spectroscopy can profit from fast, efficient, and radiation-resistant fission fragment (FF) detectors. When such experiments are performed in-beam in intense thermal neutron beams, additional constraints arise in terms of target-detector interface, beam-induced background, etc. Therefore, wide gap semi-conductor detectors were tested with the aim of developing innovative instrumentation for such applications. The detector characterization was performed with mass- and energy-separated fission fragment beams at the ILL (Institut Laue Langevin) LOHENGRIN spectrometer. Two single crystal diamonds, three polycrystalline and one diamond-on-iridium as well as a silicon carbide detector were characterized as solid state ionization chamber for FF detection. Timing measurements were performed with a 500-µm thick single crystal diamond detector read out by a broadband amplifier. A timing resolution of ∼10.2 ps RMS was obtained for FF with mass A = 98 at 90 MeV kinetic energy. Using a spectroscopic preamplifier developed at INFN-Milano, the energy resolution measured for the same FF was found to be slightly better for a ∼50-µm thin single crystal diamond detector (∼1.4% RMS) than for the 500-µm thick one (∼1.6% RMS), while a value of 3.4% RMS was obtained with the 400-µm silicon carbide detector. The Pulse Height Defect (PHD), which is significant in silicon detectors, was also investigated with the two single crystal diamond detectors. The comparison with results from α and triton measurements enabled us to conclude that PHD leads to ∼50% loss of the initial generated charge carriers for FF. In view of these results, a possible detector configuration and integration for in-beam experiments has been discussed.
