Associations Between Risk Factors of Cardiovascular Disease in Young Adults

Introduction Cardiovascular disease (CVD) impacts 50% of U.S. adults although few studies evaluate young adults’ cardiovascular disease risk. Early identification of cardiovascular disease risk may mitigate increased adulthood incidence. We analyzed (CVD) risk factors and their association with cardiovascular fitness ([Formula: see text] o2max) to devise effective strategies to improve cardiovascular health across the lifespan. Methods A cross-sectional study evaluated the effect of a single bout of aerobic exercise on cardiovascular disease risk factors in adults aged 18 to 36 years. Glycemic control (HbA1C), cardiovascular fitness ([Formula: see text]o2max), percent body fat, lean body mass, waist circumference, and body mass index (BMI) were analyzed using correlation analysis and multiple linear regression. Results Statistically significant relationships were observed between percent body fat (r = .83, P < .001) and BMI, and waist circumference (r = .83, P < .001) and BMI. Percent body fat ( P < .001) and race ( P = .018) predicted exercise time, with Asians exercising the longest. Percent fat ( P < .001) and HbA1C ( P = .039) were identified as predictors of cardiovascular fitness which was low in spite of primarily normal average HbA1C levels. Conclusions HbA1C and body fat negatively influence cardiovascular fitness ([Formula: see text] o2max) in young adults increasing adulthood cardiovascular disease risk. Research investigating the effect of HbA1C on cardiovascular health especially in youth is warranted.

The plasma metabolome is associated with preservation of physiological function following lifelong aerobic exercise in mice.

Declines in physiological function with aging are strongly linked to age-related diseases. Lifelong voluntary aerobic exercise (LVAE) preserves physiological function with aging, possibly by increasing cellular quality control processes, but the circulating molecular transducers mediating these processes are incompletely understood. The plasma metabolome may predict biological aging and is impacted by a single bout of aerobic exercise. Here, we conducted an ancillary analysis using plasma samples, and physiological function data, from previously reported studies of LVAE in male C57BL/6N mice randomized to LVAE (wheel running) or sedentary (SED) (n = 8-9/group) to determine if LVAE alters the plasma metabolome and whether these changes correlated with preservation of physiological function with LVAE. Physical function (grip strength, coordination, and endurance) was assessed at 3 and 18months of age; vascular endothelial function and the plasma metabolome were assessed at 19months. Physical function was preserved (%decline; mean ± SEM) with LVAE vs SED (all p < 0.05)-grip strength, 0.4 ± 1.7% vs 12 ± 4.0%; coordination, 10 ± 4% vs 73 ± 10%; endurance, 1 ± 15% vs 61 ± 5%. Vascular endothelial function with LVAE (88.2 ± 2.0%) was higher than SED (79.1 ± 2.5%; p = 0.03) and similar to the young controls (91.4 ± 2.9%). Fifteen metabolites were different with LVAE compared to SED (FDR < 0.05) and correlated with the preservation of physiological function. Plasma spermidine, a polyamine that increases cellular quality control (e.g., autophagy), correlated with all assessed physiological indices. Autophagy (LC3A/B abundance) was higher in LVAE skeletal muscle compared to SED (p < 0.01) and inversely correlated with plasma spermidine (r = - 0.5297; p = 0.054). These findings provide novel insight into the circulating molecular transducers by which LVAE may preserve physiological function with aging.

A practical approach for complete blood count analysis following acute exercise: Capillary vs. venous blood sampling

BackgroundVenipuncture is the standard technique for blood sample acquisition but requires expertise, larger volumes of blood, and can be challenging in special populations. Capillary sampling may provide an alternative, but its reliability is unclear for assessing hematological parameters, especially following acute exercise. ObjectivesThe purpose of the study was to compare the agreement and accuracy of complete blood counts (CBC) from capillary and venous blood sampled before, immediately after a single bout of aerobic exercise, and into recovery. An exploratory purpose was to examine potential biological sex differences within the CBC between blood sampling sites. MethodsRecreationally active healthy adults (N = 13 male and N = 13 female) completed three visits including familiarization, graded exercise testing, and a 40-minute exercise bout at 90–98% of ventilatory threshold. Venous and capillary blood samples were collected simultaneously at rest, immediately post-exercise (0 h) and 30-minutes into recovery (0.5 h). ResultsWhite blood cells (WBC), lymphocytes (LYM), and neutrophils (NEUT) were strongly correlated at all timepoints (r > 0.8, p < 0.05) with low bias, and moderate level of agreement (LOA). Mixed cells (MXD), hemoglobin (HGB), and hematocrit (HCT) were strongly correlated at baseline (r > 0.7, p < 0.05), but showed weaker correlations following exercise. There were no differences in mobilization or egress of CBC outcomes between sites by sex except for lymphocyte egress. Males had lower lymphocyte egress in venous versus capillary sampling whereas females had higher lymphocyte egress in venous versus capillary sampling. DiscussionThese data indicate capillary sampling is an accurate alternative to venous sampling following acute exercise based on LOA and reliability data.

The effects of a single bout of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise on visuomotor adaptation and its savings

Performing exercise before or after motor skill learning is thought to have a positive impact on acquisition and retention of motor memories stored in our nervous system. It has been shown that performing 25 min of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise prior to visuomotor adaptation can enhance both visuomotor adaptation and its retention compared to 25 min of rest before the adaptation. To determine whether a single bout of aerobic exercise could actually facilitate the formation of a neural representation associated with a novel visuomotor condition, we examined aftereffects and savings associated with a visuomotor adaptation task following either an exercise or a rest condition. Sixteen healthy young individuals (18–35 years) first experienced 25 min of moderate-intensity cycling or rest, and then adapted to a 30-degree visuomotor rotation condition. Immediately following that, participants experienced a washout session, which was followed by a readaptation session. Results indicated that all subjects adapted to the visuomotor rotation completely, although no difference was found between the cycling and rest conditions. Aftereffects and savings were also observed in both conditions, but with no difference between the conditions. These findings suggest that compared to a short rest session, a single bout of moderate-intensity cycling may not have a greater impact for enhancing visuomotor adaptation and its retention. Further research is needed, in which the effects of certain factors such as exercise intensity, duration and timing are more systematically investigated.

Steady-state redox status in circulating extracellular vesicles: A proof-of-principle study on the role of fitness level and short-term aerobic training in healthy young males.

Considering the role of redox homeostasis in exercise-induced signaling and adaptation, this study focuses on the exercise training-related intercellular communication of redox status mediated by circulating extracellular vesicles (EVs). 19 healthy young males were divided into trained (TG, 7) and untrained (UG, 12) subjects based on their VO2MAX. The UG subjects were further randomly distributed in experimental (UGEX, N = 7) and control (UGCTRL, N = 5) groups. The steady state of plasma EVs in TG and UGEX have been characterized for total number and size, as well as cargo redox status (antioxidants, transcription factors, HSPs) before, 3 and 24 h after a single bout of aerobic exercise (30', 70% HRM). Plasma EVs from UGEX and UGCTRL have been further characterized after 24 h from the last session of a 5-day consecutive aerobic training or no training, respectively. No differences were detected in the EVs' size and distribution at baseline in TG and UGEX (p>0.05), while the EVs cargo of UGEX showed a significantly higher concentration of protein carbonyl, Catalase, SOD2, and HSF1 compared to TG (p<0.05). 5 days of consecutive aerobic training in UGEX did not determine major changes in the steady-state number and size of EVs. The post-training levels of protein carbonyl, HSF1, Catalase, and SOD2 in EVs cargo of UGEX resulted significantly lower compared with UGEX before training and UGCTRL, resembling the steady-state levels in circulating EVs of TG subjects. Altogether, these preliminary data indicate that individual aerobic capacity influences the redox status of circulating EVs, and that short-term aerobic training impacts the steady-state redox status of EVs. Taking this pilot study as a paradigm for physio-pathological stimuli impacting redox homeostasis, our results offer new insights into the utilization of circulating EVs as biomarkers of exercise efficacy and of early impairment of oxidative-stress related diseases.

Acute stress imparts a transient benefit to task-switching that is not modulated following a single bout of exercise.

Cognitive flexibility represents a core component of executive function that promotes the ability to efficiently alternate-or "switch"-between different tasks. Literature suggests that acute stress negatively impacts cognitive flexibility, whereas a single bout of aerobic exercise supports a postexercise improvement in cognitive flexibility. Here, we examined whether a single bout of aerobic exercise attenuates a stress-induced decrement in task-switching. Forty participants (age range = 19-30) completed the Trier Social Stress Test (TSST) and were randomized into separate Exercise or Rest groups entailing 20-min sessions of heavy intensity exercise (80% of heart rate maximum via cycle ergometer) or rest, respectively. Stress induction was confirmed via state anxiety and heart rate. Task-switching was assessed prior to the TSST (i.e., pre-TSST), following the TSST (i.e., post-TSST), and following Exercise and Rest interventions (i.e., post-intervention) via pro- (i.e., saccade to veridical target location) and antisaccades (i.e., saccade mirror-symmetrical to target location) arranged in an AABB task-switching paradigm. The underlying principle of the AABB paradigm suggests that when prosaccades are preceded by antisaccades (i.e., task-switch trials), the reaction times are longer compared to their task-repeat counterparts (i.e., unidirectional prosaccade switch-cost). As expected, the pre-TSST assessment yielded a prosaccade switch cost. Notably, post-TSST physiological measures indicated a reliable stress response and at this assessment a null prosaccade switch-cost was observed. In turn, post-intervention assessments revealed a switch-cost independent of Exercise and Rest groups. Accordingly, the immediate effects of acute stress supported improved task-switching in young adults; however, these benefits were not modulated by a single bout of aerobic exercise.

No acute hyperglycemia induced impairment in brachial artery flow-mediated dilation before or after aerobic exercise training in young recreationally active males.

There is some evidence that transient endothelial dysfunction induced by acute hyperglycemia may be attenuated by a single bout of aerobic exercise. However, the impact of aerobic exercise training on acute hyperglycemia-induced endothelial dysfunction has not been explored. The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of aerobic exercise training on the endothelial function response to acute hyperglycemia. Brachial artery flow-mediated dilation (FMD) was assessed in 24 healthy males (21 ± 1years) pre-, 60 and 90min post ingestion of 75g of glucose. Participants completed a four-week control (CON; n = 13) or exercise training (EX; n = 11) intervention. The EX group completed fourweeks of cycling exercise (30min, 4×/week at 65% work rate peak). Cardiorespiratory fitness ([Formula: see text]O2peak) increased and resting HR decreased in EX, but not CON post-intervention (p < 0.001). Glucose and insulin increased (p < 0.001) following glucose ingestion, with no significant difference pre- and post-intervention. In contrast to previous research, FMD was unaffected by glucose-ingestion, pre- and post-intervention in both groups. In conclusion, acute hyperglycemia did not impair endothelial function, before or after exercise training. Relatively high baseline fitness ([Formula: see text]O2peak ~ 46mL/kg/min) and young age may have contributed to the lack of impairment observed. Further research is needed to examine the impact of exercise training on hyperglycemia-induced impairments in endothelial function in sedentary males and females.

No effects of different modalities of a single bout of exercise on sleep architecture and appetite in healthy overweight or obese young adults

BackgroundStudies on the effect of acute exercise on sleep quality and quantity reported contradictory results and the bulk of these studies were conducted in lean individuals. Furthermore, not many studies have assessed subsequent changes in appetite following an acute bout of exercise. Therefore, the exact effect of aerobic acute exercise on sleep parameters in overweight/obese young adults remains unclear. As such, the purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of a single bout of aerobic exercise on sleep architecture in healthy, overweight/obese, young adults. MethodsEighteen participants (50% female; mean age 21±1 year) with no self-reported sleep disorders or chronic health conditions took part in this study. The Balke-Ware procedure (treadmill-graded test) was used to determine exhaustion peak oxygen consumption (VO2peak). The intervention consisted of three conditions (no exercise, moderate, and intensive). Heart rates corresponding to 50% and 75% VO2peak were used to establish work rates for moderate and intense exercise conditions, respectively. Following each intervention, sleep parameters were measured throughout the night using polysomnography. Additionally, participants completed appetite visual analogue scales before each meal, on the day of the exercise, and the following day. ResultsUnivariable analyses did not yield significant results between the independent variables (condition, order, and sex) and sleep parameters; however, the intense condition (normalised to the moderate condition) had a positive relationship with the number of arousals during the subsequent night. No significant effects were noted for the multivariate analysis. Further, there was no global effect of order (p = 0.651), sex (p = 0.628), and appetite time (p = 0.400) and individual sleep characteristics did not have an effect on the Hunger and Fullness scales. However, the percentage of stage 2 had a positive effect on the Quantity scale, and the amount and percentage of time spent in REM had a negative effect on the Quantity scale, but multivariable analyses were not significant. ConclusionAcute aerobic exercise (intense or moderate) does not have beneficial or adverse effects on sleep quality and quantity in young adults with overweight/obesity. Subjective appetite may have a relationship with REM and stage 2 sleep independent of exercise.

Lifelong voluntary aerobic exercise-mediated preservation of physical function is related to changes in the plasma metabolome in aged mice

Declines in physical function with aging (i.e., grip strength, endurance, and coordination) are strongly linked to age-related diseases, and the plasma metabolome can predict the progression of healthy aging. A single bout of aerobic exercise induces changes in plasma metabolites that are implicated in healthy aging and lifespan (e.g., tRNA biosynthesis is required for protein synthesis; arginine biosynthesis contributes to nitric oxide production and skeletal muscle function; TCA cycle metabolites aid in cellular energy production). Moreover, lifelong voluntary aerobic exercise (VAE) preserves physical function with aging, but its relation to the plasma metabolome is unknown. Hypothesis: Lifelong VAE-mediated preservation of physical function is related to changes in the plasma metabolome. Design: We performed a secondary analysis of data from a lifelong study in male C57BL/6 mice, in which mice that engaged in voluntary wheel running (model of VAE; initiated at 3 mo) were compared to sedentary age-matched controls (SED) (n=8-9/group). Grip strength, endurance, and coordination were assessed at 6 and 18 mo. The plasma metabolome was measured at 19 mo by mass spectrometry. Group differences in metabolites were identified using independent t-tests (p&lt;0.05) following a Shapiro-Wilk test of normality. Then, KEGG pathway analyses (Metaboanalyst) were used to identify metabolic pathways changed with VAE (p&lt;0.05; false discovery rate&lt;0.20). Finally, simple linear regressions were used to assess the relation between the magnitude of change in grip strength, endurance, and coordination from 6 to 18 mo and plasma metabolite concentrations (all p&lt;0.05). Results: At 19 mo, VAE mice ran 3.2±0.1 km/day (mean±SE). Physical function was preserved from 6 to 18 mo (% decline) with VAE vs SED: grip strength, 0.4±1.7% vs 12±4.0% (p&lt;0.05); endurance, 1±15% vs 61±5% (p&lt;0.05); coordination, 10±4% vs 73±10% (p&lt;0.05). Group-related differences in plasma metabolites were identified at 19 mo: 23 single metabolites (p&lt;0.05) and 7 metabolic pathways. The top altered metabolic pathways are implicated in healthy aging (e.g., tRNA and arginine biosynthesis) and exercise metabolism (e.g., TCA cycle). Metabolomic differences in the VAE mice were associated with preservation of physical function: spermidine and DHA omega-3 fatty acid correlated with the change in grip strength, spermidine and L-ornithine correlated with the change in endurance, and 9 metabolites (e.g., citrate and spermidine) correlated with the change in coordination. Conclusions: We show associations between the preservation of physical function with lifelong VAE and plasma metabolite abundance. Plasma metabolomic differences in aged mice following lifelong VAE are consistent with observations of corresponding changes in response to acute exercise in young endurance trained adults. Changes in the plasma metabolome reflect preserved physical function with lifelong VAE. Acute insulin response following exercise and its association to lipid changes in sedentary African-American women

Sedentary African-American (AA) women are at increased risk of hypertension, dyslipidemias, metabolic syndrome, and impaired insulin response to exercise. The purpose of the study was to determine the effects of a single bout of aerobic exercise on fasting serum insulin and glucose concentrations following 1464 kJ (350 kcal) of exercise and to determine if this response was associated with serum lipid concentrations in overweight AA women. Premenopausal AA women (n = 11, mean ± SD, age = 32.5 ± 4.8 yr., BMI = 29.8 ± 4.8 kg·m-2, % fat = 35.6 ± 6.3, VO2peak = 21.5 ± 3.6 ml·kg-1·min-1, total cholesterol = 4.8 ± 0.6 mmol·L-1, triglycerides = 0.60 ± 0.2 mmol·L-1, HDLC = 3.3 ± 0.5 mg·dL-1) performed 1464 kJ (350 kcal) of treadmill exercise at 60%-70%VO2peak. Fasting plasma insulin and glucose concentrations were collected 24-h prior to, and immediately, 24-h, and 48 h following exercise. Fasting insulin concentration increased immediately following exercise (Baseline=77.1 ± 10.42 vs. Immediately=117.4 ± 15.28 μU·mL-1, 95%CI= 32.71, 47.89; P&lt;0.05). The change in insulin concentration from 24-h pre- to 24-h post-exercise was correlated with BMI (r= 0.51), VO2peak (r= -0.47), and the change in lipoprotein lipase activity (r=0.37) (P&lt;0.05 for all). In conclusion, in sedentary AA women, the insulin response immediately following exercise may be elevated, and is not suppressed below pre-exercise concentrations during the 48-h following exercise. The insulin response 24-h following exercise is modestly associated with markers of lipoprotein metabolism.

Contribution of High-Intensity Interval Exercise in the Fasted State to Fat Browning: Potential Roles of Lactate and β-hydroxybutyrate.

Fat browning contributes to energy consumption and may have metabolic benefits against obesity; however the potential roles of lactate and β-hydroxybutyrate (β-HB) in fat browning remain unclear. We investigated the roles of a single bout of aerobic exercise that increases lactate and β-HB levels in the fasted state on the regulation of fat browning in rats and humans. Male Sprague Dawley rats were exposed to 24-hr fasting and/or a single bout moderate-intensity aerobic exercise (40 min); Sedentary (CON), Exercise (ND-EX), Fasting (FAST), and Exercise+Fasting (F-EX). Adult men (n = 13) were randomly assigned into control with food intake (CON), exercise with intensity at onset of blood lactate accumulation in the fasted state (F-OBLA), and high-intensity interval exercise in the fasted state (F-HIIE) until each participants expended 350 kcal of energy. For evaluating the effects of exercise intensity in rats, we conducted another set of animal experiment including groups of sedentary fed control, fasting control and exercise with moderate-intensity or high-intensity interval exercise for 40 min following 24-hr fasting. Regardless of fasting, single bout of exercise increases the concentration of lactate and β-HB in rats, but the exercise in the fasted state increases the β-HB level more significantly in rats and humans. F-EX activated fat browning (AMPK/SirT1/PGC1α pathway and PRDM16) and thermogenic factor (UCP1) in white fat of rats. In rats and humans, exercise in the fasted state increased the blood levels of fat browning-related adipomyokines. In particular, compared to F-OBLA, F-HIIE more efficiently increases free fatty acid (FFA) as well as blood levels of fat browning adipomyokines in humans, which was correlated with blood levels of lactate and β-HB. In rats performed exercise with different intensity, the higher plasma lactate and β-HB levels, and higher expression of p-AMPK, UCP1 and PRDM16 in white adipose tissue of high-intensity interval exercise group than those of moderate intensity group were observed. A single bout of aerobic exercise in the fasted state significantly induced fat browning-related pathways, FFA and adipomyokines, particularly F-HIIE in human. Although further evidences for supporting our results are required in humans, aerobic exercise in the fasted state with high intensity that increase lactate and β-HB may be a modality of fat browning.

Assessing the Effects of Exercise, Cognitive Demand, and Rest on Audiovisual Multisensory Processing in OlderAdults: A Pilot Study.

A single bout of aerobic exercise is related to positive changes in higher-order cognitive function among older adults; however, the impact of aerobic exercise on multisensory processing remains unclear. Here we assessed the effects of a single bout of aerobic exercise on commonly utilized tasks that measure audiovisual multisensory processing: response time (RT), simultaneity judgements (SJ), and temporal-order judgements (TOJ), in a pilot study. To our knowledge this is the first effort to investigate the effects of three well-controlled intervention conditions on multisensory processing: resting, completing a cognitively demanding task, and performing aerobic exercise for 20 minutes. Our results indicate that the window of time within which stimuli from different modalities are integrated and perceived as simultaneous (temporal binding window; TBW) is malleable and changes after each intervention condition for both the SJ and TOJ tasks. Specifically, the TBW consistently became narrower post exercise while consistently increasing in width post rest, suggesting that aerobic exercise may improve temporal perception precision via broad neural change rather than targeting the specific networks that subserve either the SJ or TOJ tasks individually. The results from the RT task further support our findings of malleability of the multisensory processing system, as changes in performance, as assessed through cumulative probability models, were observed after each intervention condition. An increase in integration (i.e., greater magnitude of multisensory effect) however, was only found after a single bout of aerobic exercise. Overall, our results indicate that exercise uniquely affects the central nervous system and may broadly affect multisensory processing.

Influences of Aerobic Exercise on Motor Sequence Learning and Corticomotor Excitability in People With Parkinson’s Disease

Background People with Parkinson’s disease (PD) are known to have motor learning difficulties. Although numerous studies have demonstrated that a single bout of aerobic exercise (AEX) can facilitate motor learning in non-disabled adults, the same beneficial effect in PD is unknown. Furthermore, associated neuroplastic changes have not been investigated. Objectives This study aimed to determine whether a single bout of aerobic exercise (AEX) can facilitate motor sequence learning in people with PD and to investigate the associated neurophysiological changes. Methods Thirty individuals with PD were recruited and randomized into the exercise group (PD + AEX) and non-exercise group (PD − AEX). At the first visit, corticomotor excitability was assessed using transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). All participants then performed a serial reaction time task (SRTT) followed by 20 minutes of moderately-high intensity aerobic exercise (AEX) for the PD + AEX group or rest for the PD − AEX group. The SRTT and TMS were reevaluated at 3 time points: immediately after aerobic exercise (AEX) or rest, on the second day after practice (D2), and a week after practice (D7). Results Both groups showed improvement throughout practice. At retention, the PD + AEX group showed improved SRTT performance on D7 compared to D2 (P = .001), while the PD − AEX group showed no change in performance. TMS results showed that the PD + AEX group had significantly higher corticomotor excitability than the PD − AEX group on D7. Conclusion A single session of aerobic exercise (AEX) could enhance motor sequence learning and induce neuroplastic changes. Clinicians can consider providing aerobic exercise (AEX) after motor task training for people with PD. Clinical registration: NCT04189887 (ClinicalTrials.gov).

A single bout of aerobic exercise modulates motor learning performance and cortical excitability in humans

BackgroundEvidence indicates beneficial effects of aerobic exercise on motor learning performance, which might be caused by the impact of aerobic exercise on cortical excitability. It is thus suggested that physiological effects of aerobic exercise on cortical excitability determine the effects of aerobic exercise on motor learning. Nevertheless, respective results usually come from independent studies, and a prove of the causal relationship between neurophysiological and motor learning effects is still missing. This study aims to explore the impact of a single bout of aerobic exercise on brain physiology and motor learning, and the association between these phenomena in humans MethodThe study was conducted in a cross-over design. Acute Changes In Sedentary Behavior Following Aerobic Exercise In Overweight And Obese Females

Introduction: As the obesity epidemic continues to progress, the importance of participating in regular physical activity and maintaining a healthy diet is being emphasized more than ever. Exercise is often recommended to create a daily energy deficit in hopes that this deficit will result in weight loss. The reality is that weight loss due to an exercise induced energy deficit is typically less than predicted. It is hypothesized that the body attempts to counter balance the exercise induced energy deficit by reducing daily energy expenditure through an increase in daily sedentary behavior. Only a few studies have attempted to investigate this compensatory and many of these studies did not use technology that was specifically designed to measure sedentary behaviors. This study will utilize the activPal accelerometer which is designed to measure sedentary behaviors. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare acute changes in daily sedentary behavior between overweight (BMI ≥ 25) and obese (BMI ≥ 30) sedentary, college-age women over a 24-hour period, following either a 200 or 400 kcal bout of aerobic exercise (walking). Methods: Thirty-five participants completed three trials: control (no exercise), 200 kcal of exercise, and 400 kcal of exercise. The exercise consisted of walking on a treadmill at 70% of their heart rate reserve. The order of these trials were randomized. For the 200 and 400 kcal sessions, indirect calorimetry was used to measure energy expenditure. For 24 hours following each trial, changes in sedentary behavior were recorded using the activPal accelerometer. Data was analyzed using a repeated measures ANOVA. Results: There were no significant differences between the control, 200 kcal, or 400 kcal trials for sit/lie time (p = 0.230, 574.8 ± 145.5, 614.8 ± 108.4, 573.4 ± 150.9 min, respectively), standing time (p = 0.062, 231.4 ± 117.8, 185.5 ± 80.1, 219 ± 84.2 minutes respectively) or steps (p = 0.928, 7797.3 ± 3788.9, 7965.0 ± 3423.8, 7701.8 ± 3682.7 steps respectively). Conclusion: The results of this study show that daily sedentary behaviors in overweight/obese college age females does not significantly change following a single bout of aerobic exercise.

Rationale and methodology for examining the acute effects of aerobic exercise combined with varying degrees of virtual reality immersion on cognition in persons with TBI

Persons with Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) commonly present with long-term cognitive deficits in executive function, processing speed, attention, and learning and memory. While specific cognitive rehabilitation techniques have shown significant success for deficits in individual domains, aerobic exercise training represents a promising approach for an efficient and general treatment modality that might improve many cognitive domains concurrently. Existing studies in TBI report equivocal results, however, and are hampered by methodological concerns, including small sample sizes, uncontrolled single-group designs, and the use of suboptimal exercise modalities for eliciting cognitive improvements in this population. One particularly promising modality involves the application of environmental enrichment via virtual reality (VR) during aerobic exercise in persons with TBI, but this has yet to be investigated. One approach for systematically developing an optimal aerobic exercise intervention for persons with TBI involves the examination of single bouts of aerobic exercise (i.e., acute aerobic exercise) on cognition. Acute exercise research is a necessary first step for informing the development of high-quality exercise training interventions that are more likely to induce meaningful beneficial effects. To date, such an acute exercise paradigm has yet to be conducted in persons with TBI. To that end, we propose an acute exercise study that will investigate the acute effects of aerobic exercise with incremental degrees of environmental enrichment (VR) relative to a control comparison condition on executive function (divided attention and working memory) and processing speed in 24 people with TBI.

POSTEXERCISE HYPOTENSION IN AFRICAN AND ASIAN POPULATIONS: A SYSTEMATIC REVIEW AND META-ANALYSIS OF RANDOMIZED CONTROLLED TRIALS

Objective: Hypertension is the global leading risk factor for the development of cardiovascular diseases, with the highest prevalence in Asian and African populations. Post-exercise hypotension (PEH) defined as a sustained reduction in blood pressure (BP) after a single bout of exercise is an important physiological phenomenon in BP management. However, little is known about PEH in non-Caucasian populations. Therefore, we aim to systematically summarize the effects of a single bout of aerobic exercise on BP in non-Caucasian populations. Design and method: We searched the MEDLINE database identifying randomized controlled trials investigating the effect of a single bout of aerobic exercise on BP in African or Asian populations published in a peer reviewed journal up to August 2021. A meta-analysis was performed to estimate random effect sizes within 95% of confidence intervals. Results: We identified 10 aerobic exercise trials in individuals of Asian origin (n = 156; mean age: 27.05 years: 72% male) and 11 aerobic exercise trials involving individuals of African origin (n = 112; mean age: 41.37 years; 62% male). Non-significant reductions in office BP at 30 minutes (-1.18 [-9.98, 7.62]/-1.29 [-7.32, 4.74] mmHg) and 60 minutes postexercise (-1.80 [-9.98, 7.62]/ -1.28 [-6.03, 3.46] mmHg) were observed in the African group. Similar to the African group, non-significant reductions in office BP at 30 minutes (-2.17 [-6.78, 2.43] / -0.82 [-2.41, 0.77] mmHg) postexercise were observed in the Asian group. No effect was found on 24h-systolic BP postexercise, but 24h-diastolic BP reduced significantly (-1.89 [-3.47, -0.31] mmHg) in the African group. Conclusions: Except for a small, though statistically significant effect on 24h-DBP in the African group, a single bout of aerobic exercise does not seem to cause clinically relevant PEH in the African and Asian populations. It should be acknowledged that the available studies on PEH applying aerobic exercise are limited and there is a lack of data on PEH following isometric and resistance exercise in these populations. This systematic review and meta-analysis is a call for more research on exercise therapy in non-Caucasians.

Effect of acute aerobic exercise on short-term memory, long-term memory, and working memory in medical students of a tertiary care center in India: Possible role of endocannabinoids

Background: Recent studies have suggested that memory might benefit from physical exercise. Some studies also show that exercise has adverse effects on short-term memory. The number of studies on the effects of a single bout of exercise on memory is rather limited, and their results are inconsistent. In this study, we want to see the effect of a single bout of aerobic exercise on memory (short term and long term) when the learning session is before the exercise. We also want to see the effect of aerobic exercise on working memory when the learning session is after the exercise. Aims and Objectives: The aim is to find the effect of aerobic exercise on working, short-term and long-term memory. Materials and Methods: Sixty healthy medical students were divided into two groups of 30 each. Both groups were asked to listento 20 Arabic words (proper nouns) before the experiment. Students having any knowledge of Arabic were excluded from the study. Then, one group performed high-intensity exercise on a Bicycle Ergometer for 30 min and the other group silently relaxed on a chair. The subjects were asked to repeat the words heard after 20 min of exercise and 24 h of exercise. Data were recorded manually and analyzed statistically. In another experiment, the words were listened after the exercise was over, and the subjects were asked to recall after 20 min of exercise. Unpaired t-test was applied to compare the data between the two groups, and P-value and t-value were calculated. Results: When the words were recalled 20 min after exercise, the mean number of recalled words was more in the relaxing group (RG) than in the exercise group, but the result was reverse when recall was made 24 h after the exercise, i.e., more recall by exercise group. When the learning session was after the exercise and subjects were asked to recall words 20 min after the exercise, we found more recall by RG than the exercise group. Conclusion: We conclude that aerobic exercise has an adverse effect on short-term memory and working memory but has a beneficial effect on long-term memory.

Postexercise hypotension in African and Asian populations: a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials

Objectives To systematically summarize the acute effects of a single bout of aerobic exercise on blood pressure in a population of African or Asian origin. Methods We searched the MEDLINE database identifying randomized controlled trials investigating the effect of a single bout of aerobic exercise on BP in African or Asian populations with optimal BP, high normal BP or HT published in a peer reviewed journal up to August 2021. A subsequent meta-analysis was performed using random effect models fitted to estimate effect sizes. Results We identified 10 aerobic exercise trials of individuals of Asian origin (n= 156; mean age: 27.05 years: 72% male; baseline SBP/DBP: 114.93 [99,142] / 67.34 [61,74] mmHg) and 11 aerobic exercise trials involving individuals of African origin (n=112; mean age: 41.37 years; 62% male; baseline SBP/DBP: 125.77 [106.6,140.2] / 79.72 [69.9, 84.3] mmHg). Non-significant moderate reductions in office SBP and DBP at 30 minutes postexercise (-2.25 [-6.38, 1.88] mmHg, p = 0.28 / -1.02 [-2.51, 0.47] mmHg, p = 0.18) and 60 minutes postexercise (-2.80 [-7.90, 2.28], p = 0.27 / -1.95, [-5.66, 1.75], p = 0.3) were observed compared to control group. No statistically significant differences were found between ethnic groups (p &amp;gt; 0.05). Ambulatory BP was reported only in the African groups. No effect was found on 24h-SBP post-exercise, but 24h-DBP was statistically signficantly reduced (-1.89 [-3.47, -0.31] mmHg, p &amp;lt; 0.01) after a bout of aerobic exercise. Conclusions A single bout of aerobic exercise did not significantly reduce BP immediately in the African and Asian group. In the African group a small though statistically significant lower 24h-DBP was observed. Unfortunately, no data was found on the 24h-BP response in Asians. The low number of studies in both ethnic groups and lack of data on isometric and resistance exercise in African and Asian populations warrant more research to improve quality of evidence.

Acute effects of aerobic exercise on conflict suppression, response inhibition, and processing efficiency underlying inhibitory control processes: An ERP and SFT study.

Aerobic exercise has been identified as an effective strategy for transiently enhancing inhibitory control, an ability to suppress irrelevant distractors while focusing on relevant information in facilitating the implementation of goal-directed behavior. The purpose of this study was to employ a go/no-go version of the redundant-target task and event-related potential to further determine whether inhibitory control at the perceptual and response levels as well as their underlying processing capacity and neuroelectric alterations are differentially affected by a single bout of aerobic exercise. Twenty-seven young adults completed the redundant-target task while electroencephalogram was recorded before and after one 20-min bout of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise and a sitting control condition on separate days in counterbalanced order. Although behavioral outcomes of mean-level performance did not differ between intervention conditions, time-related decreases in processing capacity for the faster responses were only observed following rest. Aerobic exercise resulted in maintained P3b amplitude from pretest to posttest for all trial types while decreased P3b amplitude from pretest to posttest during single-target and redundant-target trials was observed following rest. Further, the time-related changes in P3b amplitude were positively correlated with improvements in task performance following exercise. These findings suggest that a short bout of aerobic exercise selectively counteracts the time-related decrements in processing capacity as well as neuroelectric processing of attention and conflict suppression that contribute to behavioral outcomes of inhibitory control.
