Simultaneous Determination of Sodium, Potassium, Manganese and Bromine in Tea by Standard Addition Neutron Activation Analysis

Standard addition method was applied for neutron activation analysis of tea leaves. Four brands of tea leaves were analyzed for its Na, K, Mn, and Br contents by this method. The Na, K, Mn, and Br concentrations were found to be in the 90–120 µg/g, 1.8–2.1% w/w, 150–500 and 3–7 µg/g ranges, respectively. The extraction efficiency of these elements, during the infusion, was calculated by analysis of tea leaves before and after the infusion process. It was observed that about 90% of the Na, K, and Br elements were extracted to water during the infusion process. The drinking tea is a rich source of Mn (despite of an extraction efficiency of 50% for this element).

Quantitative Determination of Ethyl Glucuronide in Sweat

In this study, ethyl glucuronide (EtG), a specific metabolite of ethanol, was for the first time detected in sweat after alcohol consumption by human volunteers. Sweat was collected using a sweat patch (PharmChek). After collection, chemicals accumulated on the patch were extracted with water and extracts were purified by solid phase extraction. EtG was determined by gas chromatography with mass spectrometric detection in negative chemical ionization mode. In parallel, the amount of sodium deposited on the patch was determined by capillary electrophoresis and used as a correction factor to calculate the volume of sweat accumulated on the patch and, hence, the concentration of EtG in sweat. The EtG sweat concentration observed ranged from 1.7 to 103.0 microg/L for alcohol consumption from 38.0 to 154.6 g equivalent pure ethanol. No EtG was detected in subjects who did not consume alcohol. Our results demonstrate that after ethanol consumption, EtG is detectable in sweat collected using a sweat patch. The simultaneous determination of sodium allows the estimation of the volume of sweat accumulated on the patch and to calculate the concentration of EtG in sweat. This represents the first quantitative determination of a xenobiotic in sweat collected using a sweat patch. This study suggests that EtG determination in sweat could represent an interesting alternative to urine or serum analysis for the control of abstinence of patients included in treatment programs.

Abstract In 0.05mol/dm3 tetrabutylammonium iodide (Dimethylformamide as solvent) buffer solution (pH=4.5), the reduction peaks of Na+ and K+ are very close. After dibenzo-18-crown-6 is added in, K+ may form complex with it. The complex can be reduced at the hanging mercury drop electrode, and gives a new reductive peak at −1.80 V which is more negative than the reductive peak of Na+. The peak current of the two peaks are proportional to the concentration of Na+ and K+ in the range of 1.0×10−8∼1.0×10−6 mol/dm3 and 2.0×10−9∼4.0×10−6 mol/dm3 respectively. The detection limits are 5.0×10−9 mol/dm3 and 6.0×10−10 mol/dm3 separately. The proposed method has been applied to the determination of Na+ and K+ content in banana and its peel.

Ultra-trace detection of potassium by laser enhanced ionization (LEI) spectrometry in flames using a non-resonant transition

Abstract A minimum detection limit (MDL) of 0.1 ng ml−1 has been obtained for potassium in water solutions by laser enhanced ionization (LEI) in an acetylene-air flame using a pulsed laser. The previous best reported MDL by a pulsed laser photoexcitation is 1 ng ml−1. In the present work, a transition from the first excited atomic state at 580.2 nm (4p-7s) has been used with an acetylene-air flame in place of the resonant line at 766.5 nm (4s-4p) and the cooler hydrogen-air dame used by earlier workers. A matrix ionization interference has been observed for the 580.2 nm (4p-7s) transition at K concentrations higher than 50 μg ml−1. Simultaneous determination of sodium with potassium is possible with this method since the (3s-4d) Na two-photon transition at 578.7 nm is nearby. An efficient new sitting type of split-electrode cathode is used for the investigations.

Simultaneous Determination of Sodium and Potassium Ions in River Water by Ion Chromatography Using Silica Gels as a Stationary Phase

Alkali metal cations were shown to be separable on a silica gel column by cation exchange. Factors affecting the separation of these cations were investigated. Among them, type and concentration of the mobile phase electrolytes profoundly affected the retention of the analyte. The alkali metal cations were well separated on a 150 mm long Zorbax SIL column with 2.1 mm i.d., using an aqueous 0.01 mol dm−3 lithium acetate as the mobile phase. Sodium and potassium in river water were determined rapidly with satisfactory accuracy.

Sodium, magnesium, aluminium, silicon and phosphorus were determined simultaneously by measuring the activities of 24Na, 27Mg and 28Al produced by neutron activation once with reactor neutrons and once with epithermal neutrons (those neutrons from a nuclear reactor that are not absorbed by a cadmium sheet). The six countings gave six equations from which the required five quantities were calculated. Several known mixtures were checked, and the ranges in which Si and P could be determined were found (Si : Al and P : Al >10 : 1).

Simultaneous determination of sodium and potassium in human urine or serum using coated-wire ion-selective electrodes based on bis(crown ether)s

High-performance coated-wire ion-selective electrodes based on dodecylmethyl bis(12-crown-4) and bis(benzo-15-crown-5) are used for the simultaneous determination of Na+ and K+ in human urine or serum by means of the Gran's plot method. The results of the potentiometric determination for Na+ and K+ in human urine or serum are in good agreement with the values obtained by flame photometry.

Simultaneous Determination of Sodium, Potassium, and Ammonium Ions by Automated Direct Potentiometry

Abstract Sodium, potassium and ammonium ions, in concentration ranges of natural and waste water samples, have been simultaneously determined by direct potentiometry, using sodium, potassium, and ammonia ion-sensitive electrodes. The results are printed out as concentration units directly from an automated continuous -flow system with on-line minicomputer and printer. The optimum sampling rate is 20 samples or 60 determinations per hour. Various water samples have been analyzed and the results compared to those obtained by the standard methods. The lower detection limits were 0.1 ppm for Na+ and NH4 + and 1.0 ppm for K+. The values of standard deviation were < 10%, with the exception of the lowest concentrations. The relative error was in the range of ± 2%. The correlation of standard and proposed methods was very good.

Simultaneous Determination of Sodium and Potassium in Small Volumes of Fluid by Flame Photometry

ABSTRACT A method of flame photometry is described, by which the amount of sodium and potassium in biological fluids can be determined simultaneously, using samples of the order of 10−3 cu.mm. When the method is tested with quantities near the lower limits of detection (of the order 4 × 10−8 mg. sodium, 6 × 10−8 mg. potassium) the reproducibility, measured as standard deviation, is ±7 × 10−9 mg. sodium and ± 17 × 10−9 mg. potassium. When larger quantities (up to certain limits) are used, the standard deviation is approximately ± 3 % of the quantity in the sample, both for sodium and for potassium. As is usual in flame photometry serious errors can be caused by the presence of other substances in the sample. In the case studied for purposes of illustration it is shown that these interference errors can be reduced to the order of ± 6 % by the addition of excess ammonium phosphate.
