Improvement of optical wave propagation simulations: the scaled angular spectrum method for far-field and focal analysis

In the field of optics, accurately simulating wave propagation is essential for both theoretical insights and practical applications. This study introduces the scaled angular spectrum method (Sc-ASM) for simulating far-field and focal patterns, overcoming the limitations inherent in the standard angular spectrum method (ASM) by allowing variable sampling intervals between source and observation planes. Comparative analysis with the Rayleigh–Sommerfeld integral demonstrates Sc-ASM's superior accuracy in estimating the far-field patterns of beams with complex phase structures. Our results underscore Sc-ASM’s potential to set a new benchmark in optical simulations, significantly advancing optical system design and the study of wave propagation.

Extended finite element method with cell-based smoothing for modeling frictional contact crack-induced acoustic nonlinearity involving distorted mesh

This study proposes a 2D cell-based smoothed extended finite element method (CS-XFEM) for accurate and efficient simulation of nonlinear ultrasonic wave propagation in solid structures, specifically addressing the effects of frictional contact in cracks. Traditional mesh discretization methods for cracks often suffer from mesh distortion and computational instability owing to their high aspect ratios. To overcome this, CS-XFEM integrates a cell-based smoothing technique into XFEM to model the frictional contact of a crack. A comprehensive numerical example demonstrates the advantages of CS-XFEM. The results show that CS-XFEM exhibits a higher convergence rate and enables a larger critical time increment than XFEM. Specifically, the critical time increment of CS-XFEM was found to be twice that of XFEM, leading to a 50% reduction in the total computational time. These findings confirm that CS-XFEM is an efficient, accurate, and robust numerical method for studying the acoustic nonlinearity induced by crack-induced frictional contact.

Numerical simulation of acoustic waves propagation by finite element method based on optimized matrices

Abstract Based on the wave equation, scholars worldwide have proposed various methods for numerical simulation of seismic wave propagation in underground and surface media. The finite element method offers a unique advantage in accurately depicting the undulating surfaces and steep palaeoburial hills with its triangular mesh. However, its computational efficiency cannot meet our needs while lots of memories are occupied. To address this, we optimized and improved the critical Mass matrix and Stiffness matrix of spatial discretization of the acoustic wave equation. We first fully utilized the flexibility of triangles to fit different undulating terrains, then reorganized the numbering of triangle mesh nodes and elements to reduce the bandwidth of the matrices, and then used optimized matrices for solving. The Crank-Nicolson scheme was adopted for time discretization, and the Perfectly Matched Layer condition was utilized to eliminate false waves reflected from the boundary. The numerical experiments with simple and significant fluctuation models proved that this method can accelerate computational efficiency while ensuring computational accuracy.

Earthquake source impacts on the generation and propagation of seismic infrasound to the upper atmosphere

Summary Earthquakes with moment magnitude (Mw) ranging from 6.5 to 7.0 have been observed to generate sufficiently strong acoustic waves (AWs) in the upper atmosphere. These AWs are detectable in Global Navigation Satellite System satellite signals-based total electron content (TEC) observations in the ionosphere at altitudes ∼250-300 km. However, the specific earthquake source parameters that influence the detectability and characteristics of AWs are not comprehensively understood. Here, we extend our approach of coupled earthquake-atmosphere dynamics modeling by combing dynamic rupture and seismic wave propagation simulations with two- and three-dimensional atmospheric numerical models, to investigate how the characteristics of earthquakes impact the generation and propagation of AWs. We developed a set of idealized dynamic rupture models varying faulting types and fault sizes, hypocentral depths and stress drops. We focus on earthquakes of Mw 6.0-6.5, which are considered the smallest detectable with TEC, and find that the resulting AWs undergo nonlinear evolution and form acoustic shock N-waves reaching thermosphere at ∼90-140 km. The results reveal that the magnitude of the earthquakes is not the sole or primary factor determining the amplitudes of AWs in the upper atmosphere. Instead, various earthquake source characteristics, including the direction of rupture propagation, the polarity of seismic wave imprints on the surface, earthquake mechanism, stress drop, and radiated energy, significantly influence the amplitudes and periods of AWs. The simulation results are also compared with observed TEC fluctuations from AWs generated by the 2023 Mw 6.2 Suzu (Japan) earthquake, finding preliminary agreement in terms of model-predicted signal periods and amplitudes. Understanding these nuanced relationships between earthquake source parameters and AW characteristics is essential for refining our ability to detect and interpret AW signals in the ionosphere.

A 2.5D hybrid SBM-MFS methodology for elastic wave propagation problems

This paper proposes a novel hybrid methodology that combines the singular boundary method (SBM) and the method of fundamental solutions (MFS) for the computational simulation of elastic wave propagation. Particularly, the methodology aims to address radiation or scattering problems of longitudinally invariant systems in the wavenumber-frequency domain involving boundaries with intricate geometries. The approach uses the SBM to deal with the complex parts of these geometries and the MFS for the smooth ones. The method is studied in the framework of three case studies involving longitudinally infinite cavities in a homogeneous full-space with circular, square-shaped and five-cusped hypocycloid cross-sections. These three examples are selected to assess the accuracy and robustness of the hybrid SBM-MFS approach in comparison with alternative modelling strategies. The comparisons show that the proposed method inherits the accuracy of the MFS while keeping the robustness of the SBM when dealing with complex geometries. The method is found to be computationally more efficient than the SBM or the boundary element method (BEM). Moreover, the hybrid approach naturally mitigates the effect of fictitious eigenfrequencies, a feature that neither conventional versions of the SBM nor the BEM have.

A Gaussian process approach for rapid evaluation of skin tension

Skin tension plays a pivotal role in clinical settings, it affects scarring, wound healing and skin necrosis. Despite its importance, there is no widely accepted method for assessing in vivo skin tension or its natural pre-stretch. This study aims to utilise modern machine learning (ML) methods to develop a model that uses non-invasive measurements of surface wave speed to predict clinically useful skin properties such as stress and natural pre-stretch. A large dataset consisting of simulated wave propagation experiments was created using a simplified two-dimensional finite element (FE) model. Using this dataset, a sensitivity analysis was performed, highlighting the effect of the material parameters and material model on the Rayleigh and supersonic shear wave speeds. Then, a Gaussian process regression model was trained to solve the ill-posed inverse problem of predicting stress and pre-stretch of skin using measurements of surface wave speed. This model had good predictive performance (R2 = 0.9570) and it was possible to interpolate simplified parametric equations to calculate the stress and pre-stretch. To demonstrate that wave speed measurements could be obtained cheaply and easily, a simple experiment was devised to obtain wave speed measurements from synthetic skin at different values of pre-stretch. These experimental wave speeds agree well with the FE simulations, and a model trained solely on the FE data provided accurate predictions of synthetic skin stiffness. Both the simulated and experimental results provide further evidence that elastic wave measurements coupled with ML models are a viable non-invasive method to determine in vivo skin tension. Statement of significanceTo prevent unfavourable patient outcomes from reconstructive surgery, it is necessary to determine relevant subject-specific skin properties. For example, during a skin graft, it is necessary to estimate the pre-stretch of the skin to account for shrinkage upon excision. Existing methods are invasive or rely on the experience of the clinician. Our work aims to present an innovative framework to non-invasively determine in vivo material properties using the speed of a surface wave travelling through the skin. Our findings have implications for the planning of surgical procedures and provides further motivation for the use of elastic wave measurements to determine in vivo material properties.

Design and time-domain finite element simulation of multi-functional transformation optical device

In this paper, we first proposed mathematical model equations for wave propagation in a multi-functional transformation optical device, namely, an electromagnetic rotation concentrator. This device can concentrate electromagnetic energy while rotating electromagnetic waves. We also demonstrate the stability of the model equation in the continuous case. Next, we designed the multi-functional device with multiple layers. We then proposed a time-domain finite element method for simulating wave propagation in this device and conducted a stability analysis of the model equations in the discrete case. Finally, we implemented the proposed algorithm and obtained numerous numerical results that demonstrate the validity of our model equations. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work on time-domain modeling and analysis of multi-functional electromagnetic devices.

Simulating time-harmonic acoustic wave effects induced by periodic holes/inclusions on surfaces

This paper introduces a localized meshless method to analyze time-harmonic acoustic wave propagation on curved surfaces with periodic holes/inclusions. In particular, the generalized finite difference method is used as a localized meshless technique to discretize the surface gradient and Laplace-Beltrami operators defined extrinsically in the governing equations. An absorbing boundary condition is introduced to reduce reflections from boundaries and accurately simulate wave propagation on unclosed surfaces with periodic inclusions. Several benchmark examples demonstrate the efficiency and accuracy of the proposed method in simulating acoustic wave propagation on surfaces with diverse geometries, including complex shapes and periodic holes or inclusions.

Weakly-Anelliptical Traveltime Analysis: Ambiguity between Subsurface and Elasticity

The building of a subsurface and (anisotropic) velocity model from a single gather of reflection traveltime (kinematic) data is inherently ambiguous since the processing of such data can only determine a horizontal slowness component, not a vertical one. Based thereon I derive a simple algorithm that generates an infinite series of combinations of subsurface - velocity models, all of which will show nearly the same seismic kinematic response, as further demonstrated by simulating wave propagation through a model with different interface dips. This algorithm assumes, firstly, all interface dips remain constant over the distance considered and, secondly, an approximation of the elasticity model – that is, linearization of a phase velocity – valid for weak anisotropy can be used. Furthermore, when applied at the classic, and analytically solvable, case of traveltime analysis for a stack of flat layers with weak transverse isotropy, the algorithm explains theoretically the combination of anisotropy parameters that govern the non-hyperbolic term of a traveltime series: the established [Formula: see text] and its new counterpart [Formula: see text] for a [Formula: see text] - and [Formula: see text] -wave, respectively.

Pebble tracing experiment at the Promenade des Anglais (Nice, France): A contribution towards beach management efforts

In this paper, the results of a short-term tracing experiment carried out at a beach compartment along the Bay of Nice (southern France) are presented. Nice urban beach is characterized by persistent offshore sediment loss issues that force the local administration to operate frequent artificial replenishments to maintain the current configuration, which also protects the well-renown Promenade des Anglais from high-energy events. As beach refills are quite expensive, the aim of the paper is to provide novel insights about the transport processes of pebble-sized tracers, which might support the Municipality to better adjust future interventions. Pebbles were tracked by means of the Radio Frequency Identification technology, largely used in such settings because of its reliability and efficiency. In addition, the morphology of the beach was monitored during the three-days-long experiment by airborne and ground topographic surveys, as well as the shape and the size of the tracers. Finally, a wave model was produced to simulate wave propagation in the nearshore, which validates the observed transport patterns. The results documented a low recovery rate (56%) 4 h after tracer injection, which is uncharacteristic considering that it jumped to 91% after the second survey, 24 h after the injection. At the end of the experiment (48 h), the recovery rate sank to 14%. These data were adequate to identify a few trends in pebble transport: tracer recovery rate in the swash zone was very low, while many marked pebbles were found at the step crest. Although this transport pattern may corroborate the offshore movement of the sediments, the topographic surveys revealed the destruction and re-formation of the fair-weather berm overnight, which would imply the presence of a shoreward transport under low energy wave conditions. While size did not single out any tendency, shape did: spheres rolled down the beachface earlier than disks; by contrast, disk-shaped pebbles moved for longer distances than spheres. These findings will be useful for local coastal managers because next beach fills will be planned and optimized based on the observed transport patterns. Though the selection of disk-shaped pebbles implies increasing costs, replenishments would be more efficient and fine-tuned for this sector of coast, which would ultimately save resources reducing negative impacts on the environment along the way. These considerations are valid for the Bay of Nice, but they might be useful wherever coarse-clastic beaches need recurring replenishments.

This paper proposes to use the detonation process to solve the problem of controlling highly maneuverable flying vehicles. The goal of the work is to study a new way of the thrust vector control of a rocket engine using the effect of a detonation shock wave on the gas flow in the nozzle. It is known that the method of thrust vector control by gas injection into the supersonic nozzle area of a rocket engine features one of the lowest losses of specific momentum and a high response speed and produces a significant lateral force. However, for the current level of rocket technology, there is a need to improve these characteristics. Detonation is considered as a method to intensify processes that affect the main gas flow and produce a lateral force. Its features make it possible to develop a system for pulse trajectory correction. In order to study the features of such a system, experimental studies of the detonation wave effect on a supersonic nozzle flow were conducted. A nozzle model and a gas generator for initiating a detonation wave interacting with the main supersonic air flow were developed and made. In the course of experiments, the effect of separation of the main flow from the nozzle wall by the detonation wave during the nozzle operation in the overexpansion mode was revealed. The duration of this effect was much longer than that of the detonation product effect on the main air flow in the nozzle, thus allowing it to be used in the development of a new thrust vector control method. To better understand the experimental results, a numerical simulation of the detonation wave propagation in a supersonic flow was carried out for the test conditions. The simulation was carried out in a non-stationary 2D formulation using the Solid Works software package. The goal of the simulation was to estimate the flow structure and the value of the relative lateral force produced by the change of this structure during detonation product injection into the supersonic nozzle area. The time evolution of the pressure field was obtained. The relative lateral force produced by detonation product injection into the supersonic air flow in the nozzle was determined. The presented features and method of jet engine thrust vector control may be used in unmanned systems operating in a wide range of speeds.

Acoustic emission source location for composite tubes using finite element simulation and machine learning

ABSTRACT Acoustic emission is widely used in engineering structural health monitoring, where damage location based on acoustic emission have great advantages. Currently, most of the acoustic emission location work requires extensive experimental studies. In this study, acoustic emission source location model was proposed based on BP neural network and acoustic emission wave propagation simulation, thus reduced the experiments required for acoustic emission localisation and improved the location accuracy. Initially, finite element simulation was conducted to study the propagation of acoustic emission waves in composite tubes. The calculated findings showed a high level of agreement with the experimental data. Additionally, the first arrival time of the signal was extracted according to the Akaike information criterion, and the neural network was trained and tested using the simulated data, while the trained network model was validated using the experimental data. The results show that the finite element method is a reliable alternative test method. More than 94% of the sound source location results have absolute location error within ± 3 mm, and the all points is less than ± 5 mm. The deviation of the location results showed significant improvement compared to the traditional time difference of arrival method, verifying the feasibility of the method.

A non-invasive short range acoustic technique for liquid level measurement in containers

Techniques to measure liquid level in containers and vessels non-invasively are of great interest for the manufacturing, chemical industries, and energy sectors. Most commercial solutions use invasive techniques, which are not always practical and can lead to unsafe conditions when measuring devices encounter high pressures or hazardous chemical contents. In this study, a portable, non-invasive acoustic liquid level identification technique is developed. The technique relies on comprehensive analysis of acoustic guided wave modes in the container walls and their coupling to liquid contents to determine the optimal sensor separation distance and excitation signal characteristics, resulting in liquid level determination with high accuracy and precision. First, dispersion characteristics of guided wave propagation in container walls in contact with a liquid boundary are studied in detail. Based on the dispersion analysis a general-purpose short-range liquid level detection methodology is developed. The developed methodology is then validated using numerical wave propagation simulations and experiments on various metal containers with different physical characteristics, illustrating the versatility of the method. Compared to existing techniques, which are optimized for specific applications, the proposed method, due to its short range and non-invasive nature, has the potential for universal applicability on virtually any container, irrespective of its shape, size, wall-thickness, and whether it has any internal components.

A CFD-FEA coupled model for simulating dynamic response of offshore jacket platform under earthquake considering wind, wave, current and aftershock loads

Offshore platforms as the key equipment in marine oil and gas exploitation are facing challenges from various environmental conditions, such as winds, waves, currents and even earthquakes. Due to the combined action of those concurrent loads, there is potential risk of accidents. The aim of this paper is to systematically study the dynamic response and safety assessment of the large scaled offshore structures against the concurrent loads considering the fluid-structure interaction (FSI) effects. Three-dimensional numerical wave flume including a jacket platform is established by CFD software Fluent, based on which the simulation of wave generation and propagation is carried out. Then the FSI effects between waves and platform are analyzed using the CFD- FEA coupling method. Subsequently, the seismic ground accelerations are inputted into the platform, correspondingly the structural response is analyzed. Moreover, multiple influencing factors including earthquake direction and mainshock-aftershock sequence are discussed. The results show that the structure response under concurrent loads is not a simple linear superposition of different load. The seismic response would be underestimated if wave action is ignored when the earthquake acts on certain angles. The methodology proposed could be regarded as an effective way to analyze the FSI problem under realistic offshore environment.

Simulations of S waves from the piezoelectric source to the receiver to assist in laboratory measurements of rock properties

An accurate determination of the emitted S-wave arrival time at the piezoelectric receiver of laboratory triaxial cells is challenging due to the complex preceding P- and S-wave patterns. To analyze this pattern and decipher the true arrival time of the emitted S wave, we simulate wave propagation from the actuator to the receiver. The piezoelectric response is accounted for, and the electromechanical coupling is solved, using the spectral finite-element method or approximated using a linear spatial variation of the electric potential over the actuator to capture the same field over the receiver. The fully coupled algorithms are validated with 1D simulations and compared with an exact solution constructed with the method of characteristics. Simulations for a 2D simplified experimental system indicate the validity of the linear simplification. The comparison of the simulated results through a section of the triaxial cell with laboratory calibration data for a steel specimen validates our choice of damping material proxy within the actuator. A final series of simulations for two orthotropic shales with different anisotropy axis orientations with respect to the cell, and two Fontainebleau sandstones with very different [Formula: see text]/[Formula: see text] ratios, is presented. These differences in physical properties have little impact on the wave pattern at and just after the arrival of the main S wave. The pattern is influenced more by the experimental setup geometry and the actuator’s internal structure than by the nature of the specimen.

The influence of an anticline structure on ambient noise spectral anomalies at an underground gas storage

SUMMARY The purpose of this study is to investigate the seismic ambient noise spectral anomalies that occur near gas reservoirs. These anomalies involve a significant spectral amplification of the vertical component for frequencies generally between 1.5 and 4 Hz and have been reported at various hydrocarbon sites worldwide. There are differing views on the mechanisms responsible for these anomalies. The guideline for this study is that many hydrocarbon reservoirs share a common geological feature: an anticline structure. It appears to cause site effects that influence the amplitude of the ambient noise wavefield. This research examines a dense real data set of ambient noise recorded at the Chémery underground gas storage site in France. The analysis identifies stable spectral anomalies between 1.2 and 2.4 Hz that are correlated to the position of the anticline structure, which also corresponds to the position of the gas bubble. We use a beamforming technique to study the composition and the origin of the ambient noise, and show that the variations of the spectral anomalies over time are correlated to changes in the source wavefield. Finally, we perform numerical simulations of Rayleigh wave propagation within a realistic 3-D velocity model of the Chémery site, while using source distributions directly extracted from real data analysis. The comparison of the simulated anomalies with real data yields a satisfactory qualitative fit. We conclude that the fundamental-mode Rayleigh wave site effect on the anticline is the main mechanism of the spectral anomaly.

Numerical simulation of sound attenuation in an acoustically lined duct in high-temperature air flows

Noise reduction structures are important for the vibration and noise reduction design of aerospace engines. The design of noise-reducing structures often needs to be quickly evaluated via numerical simulations. Hence, the simulation results of the corresponding system are very important for guiding the design of noise-reducing structures. High temperature is one of the key environmental factors that need to be considered when evaluating the sound attenuation process via numerical methods. In this study, numerical simulations of acoustic wave propagation on an acoustic liner structure considering air temperature variations are carried out by using compressible Navier–Stokes equations and the ideal gas equation of state. The results showed that the effect of temperature on sound attenuation under grazing flow conditions is complex. Moreover, an increase in temperature will reduce the transmission loss of the acoustic liner in the grazing flow at high air speed.

A comparison of ground motions predicted through one-dimensional site response analyses and three-dimensional wave propagation simulations at regional scales

One-dimensional (1D) site response analysis (SRA), which considers vertically propagating seismic waves from the bedrock to the surface, has been a common technique among geotechnical engineers to examine site-specific ground shaking. However, observations from past earthquakes and analytical studies indicate that idealizations ingrained in 1D SRA may be too severe to capture the ground truth, such as the omissions of spatial variability of soil properties, surface topography, and basin and directivity effects. Physics-based three-dimensional ground motion simulations (GMSs) can incorporate these factors and yield more reliable predictions. In this study, we utilize ground motions from 57 physics-based broadband (from 0 to 8–12 Hz) GMS for a region of Istanbul. A total of 2912 sites with experimentally measured soil profiles that are distributed over the 30 km-by-12.5 km area are also modeled as soil columns and analyzed through 1D SRA. The ground responses from 1D SRA and three-dimensional (3D) GMS are then compared for all 57 earthquake scenarios. These systematic comparisons are then used for examining model features that are correlated with variations in the ratios of various ground motion intensity measures (IMs) and for developing regression-based formulas that can be used for determining simple factors for the considered region to correctly scale (up or down) the site-specific ground motion intensities obtained from 1D SRA, including peak ground acceleration (PGA), peak ground velocity (PGV), and spectral acceleration ( Sa) values.

Volcano generated tsunami recorded in the near source

Volcano sector collapse and pyroclastic density currents are common phenomena on active volcanoes and potentially a fatal source of tsunami waves which constitute a serious hazard for local as well as distant coastal population. Several examples in recent history, warn us on the urgent need to improve our mitigation counter-actions when tsunamis have volcanic origin. However, instrumental record of tsunami generated by mass movement along a volcano flank are still rare and not well understood yet. Small tsunamis (≤1 m) induced by pyroclastic density currents associated to violent explosions of Stromboli volcano were recorded in near-source conditions (<1.6 km). We show how tsunami waveform remains unaltered regardless of the two orders of variability in the landslide volume and dynamics. This unprecedented record is also providing the lesson to develop unconventional warning strategies necessary when the tsunamigenic source is expected to be very close (<10 minutes) to densely populated coasts and with a limited time to issue an alert based on simulation of wave propagation and inundation.

Midpoint geometric integrators for inertial magnetization dynamics

We consider the numerical solution of the inertial version of Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation (iLLG), which describes high-frequency nutation on top of magnetization precession due to angular momentum relaxation. The iLLG equation defines a higher-order nonlinear dynamical system with very different nature compared to the classical LLG equation, requiring twice as many degrees of freedom for space-time discretization. It exhibits essential conservation properties, namely magnetization amplitude preservation, magnetization projection conservation, and a balance equation for generalized free energy, leading to a Lyapunov structure (i.e. the free energy is a decreasing function of time) when the external magnetic field is constant in time. We propose two second-order numerical schemes for integrating the iLLG dynamics over time, both based on implicit midpoint rule. The first scheme unconditionally preserves all the conservation properties, making it the preferred choice for simulating inertial magnetization dynamics. However, it implies doubling the number of unknowns, necessitating significant changes in numerical micromagnetic codes and increasing computational costs especially for spatially inhomogeneous dynamics simulations. To address this issue, we present a second time-stepping method that retains the same computational cost as the implicit midpoint rule for classical LLG dynamics while unconditionally preserving magnetization amplitude and projection. Special quasi-Newton techniques are developed for solving the nonlinear system of equations required at each time step due to the implicit nature of both time-steppings. The numerical schemes are validated on analytical solution for macrospin terahertz frequency response and the effectiveness of the second scheme is demonstrated with full micromagnetic simulation of inertial spin waves propagation in a magnetic thin-film.
