Analysis of Harmonic Current Propagation in Industrial Sectorin Function of the Load Level

This article presents the influence of the loadlevel variation in the power quality. The study it is based on apunctual audit, made to a group of loads in a cement industry,with experimental data acquired by monitoring equipment.Quality indexes of Power Energy Industrial System aredetermined for different points of the network, such as points ofcommon coupling, disturbing load points, linear load points andreactive energy compensation points. The monitored data areanalyzed, according to the patterns of the IEEE 519-1992standard. Using audit results along with system data, a PowerEnergy Industrial System simulation model is developed inMATLAB®/SIMULINK®. This model is then used to extrapolatethe Harmonic Distortion Propagation at the industry plant, forother load levels apart from the monitored ones. Theinformation related to Harmonic Distortion Propagation fordifferent load levels is used to strengthen the conclusions ofPower Energy Industrial System audits.

On artificial density treatment for the pressure Poisson equation in the DEM-CFD simulations

The discrete element method (DEM) coupled with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is regarded to be a standard approach in a numerical calculation of gas-solid flow. When the DEM-CFD method is applied to the simulation of industrial systems, we cannot shy away from the modeling of arbitrary shape wall boundaries. Very recently, we have developed an innovative wall boundary model in the DEM-CFD simulations, where the signed distance function (SDF) and the immersed boundary method (IBM) are used for the wall boundary in the DEM and CFD. The SDF makes it possible to create an arbitrary shape wall boundary based on the scalar field. The IBM can be used for the wall boundary model by reflecting the number of the SDF points on the local volume fraction in CFD grid. Thus, the arbitrary shape wall boundary can be easily created in the DEM-CFD method by combining the SDF with the IBM. On the other hand, the authors' group has pointed out the necessity of the density scale technique in CFD. In the density scale technique, the density scale coefficient is considered in the calculation of the pressure Poisson equation. When the SDF/IBM is applied to CFD without density scaling technique, an unnatural fluid flow might occur through the wall boundary object. The effect of the density scaling coefficient on a gas-solid flow has not been examined so far. From this background, the influence of the density scale coefficient on a gas-solid flow is investigated in the present study. Through this study, introduction of the density scaling technique is designated to be crucial when the IBM is used for the wall boundary in the DEM-CFD simulation. The density scaling coefficient is shown to be decided not by theory but by experience, and the value should become 100 to 1000 in a typical gas-solid flow system. Besides, it is illustrated that the calculation cost is not influenced by the value of the density scale coefficient in the DEM-CFD simulations.

Modelling and Simulation of a Shearcut Process Flow at a Steel Processing Company

Modelling and simulation of industrial systems have become a conventional method for productivity improvement through optimizing design, operation, performance and troubleshooting. This paper analyses the current Shearcut process flow through modelling and simulation. A case study research was undertaken at a steel processing company that transform steel coils into sheets, plates, slits, tubes, blanks and various roofing products. Two models were created using Arena software. The models were a representation of the process flow found in the Shearcut warehouse. The first model was developed from data obtained from production records and time studies that were carried out on some of the operations. Bottleneck stations and non-value adding operations were identified. The second model was created with some improvements that included reduced non-value adding times. Results from the second model had an improved output. This paper contributes to the use of computer simulation as a tool to improve productivity.

Understanding granular media: from fundamentals and simulations to industrial application

Academic and industrial research on the behaviour of granular material is increasingly supported by numerical simulations. Such simulation environments are not only a vital tool in design and analysis, but also a key link between physicists and engineers. This Topical Collection includes a range of papers that use simulation to study granular matter from the micro- and macroscopic behaviour of particles to the behaviour of large industrial or geomechanical systems. These contributions enhance our understanding of basic physical effects and processes such as heat transfer, agglomeration and screening but also give essential parameters for the simulation of industrial systems, or, at least, guide the strategies required to provide realistic simulation results. The collection focuses on the presentation of (a) new coupled simulation methods to consider the interaction of granular bodies with structural or fluid systems (b) new findings for the consideration of particle shape and particle size distributions within simulations, (c) acoustic wake agglomeration, and (d) gravitational flow in geomechanics.

Hardware-in-the-loop environment for verification of a small satellite's on-board software

Hardware-in-the-loop test beds are applied in industrial satellite development to verify on-board software and to simulate operational scenarios. Spacecraft attitude sensors are simulated by models, which eliminate the need to stimulate them for closed loop scenarios. Similarly, attitude actuators are simulated including actuation interaction with spacecraft dynamics behavior. This approach leads to an enormous reduction in a spacecraft's verification time. Small satellites developed by organizations like AMSAT or by universities are even more limited with respect to available staff and thus even more constrained. As a consequence, there is a need to implement a comparable approach for a hardware-in-the-loop simulation environment at lower cost than in industrial development. The University of Stuttgart has developed and verified a hardware-in-the-loop system test bed for a small satellite's on-board computer while maintaining compliance to industrial standards. Further cost reduction was achieved by applying an industrial system simulation kernel, additional open-source software, the voluntary participation of students, and cooperation with the industry. The system simulation environment connected to the on-board computer was verified by comparing its results with dedicated simulation tools of several disciplines. The latency of signal transfers between the on-board software and the simulator in closed loop operation was determined and analyzed with respect to compliance to control loops and simulation step sizes. All results have been proven to be satisfactory for application in university satellite development and are presented in this publication. This setup is now used in the frame of the on-board software verification for the Flying Laptop satellite.

CHISA 2014 – Worldwide Chemical Engineers Meet in the Heart of Europe

Imagine a perfect chemical engineering scenario. At the beginning, you, a chemical engineer, in the lab together with your colleague, an organic chemist, come up with a formula and process for a product that will make the customer happy. The lab-scale synthesis is not straightforward; it includes granular powder, multiphase flow and harsh conditions. The production scale is multi-ton per year and the product is expected on the market soon. In the past, a similar scale-up from the lab to the production would have meant a tedious if not impossible work, pilot plant tests, and a portion of good luck to deliver the production process in time. This time, you use the multi-scale numerical simulation to transfer the multiphase flow from the lab to the reactor scale at once and to design the optimized continuous reactor geometry at the same time. Using the process intensification guidelines, you select the proper heat exchanger with micro-structured elements and calculate the operating expenses. The product is at the market soon, profits are high, customers are happy. The job is well done. This might sound like fiction, but it is not that farfetched as will be documented with this special issue of Chemical Engineering & Technology, which is dedicated to the International Congress on Chemical Engineering CHISA 2014, held in Prague, Czech Republic, indeed in the heart of Europe. The CHISA 2014 congress traditionally addressed the full spectrum of chemical and process engineering practice, including the current trends and future needs in reaction engineering, catalysis, separation processes, fluid flow and multiphase systems, computer aided engineering, and other engineering fields. Ten specialized symposia were organized to cover the broader research areas such as environmental engineering, food processes, biotechnology, process intensification miniaturization and others. Due to the high number of quality contributions, another CHISA 2014 focus issue is in consideration for publication in Chemical Engineering & Technology later this year. During a CHISA 2014 plenary, Prof. Wei Ge presented a systematic co-design of the physical model, numeric software and computer hardware conducted by his team at the Institute of Process Engineering, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing. This approach can be applied in multi-scale simulations of discrete systems at different levels from molecular dynamics to multiphase fluid flow with micron-scale particles at reactor scale. Prof Ge believes that with further optimization of the model and algorithm, the speed and scale of discrete simulation can be elevated again by several orders in the near future, resulting in real-time simulation of industrial systems without scarifying its resolution and accuracy. That means the virtual reality of industrial processes is turning from fiction to practice. More details can be found in the related article in this issue. In one of many CHISA 2014 keynote lectures, Alberto Simoncelli (PrimaRatio) explored the frontiers of processing, mentioning the concurrent early formulation and processing, timescale management, and fast, lean and targeted approach. I believe that challenging these frontiers with the research, approaches, and methodologies not only presented at CHISA 2014, but also published in Chemical Engineering & Technology in general, we can pursue the chemical engineering scenarios similar to the one described above. Their knowledge is generally based on the measurements of system variables and on the physico-chemical models of the process. Nevertheless, this information is imprecise because of process and measurement noise. So, the research ways aim at developing new and more powerful techniques for the detection of process fault. This article presents a method for the fault detection based on the comparison between the reference model evolution and the real system generated by the extended Kalman filter. The reference model is simulated by the dynamic hybrid simulator, PrODHyS. It is a general object-oriented environment which provides common and reusable components designed for the development and the management of dynamic simulation of industrial systems. The use of this method is illustrated through a didactic example relating to the field of Chemical Process System Engineering.

We are located in the context of the industrial system simulation, which is complex and distributed in operational, informational and decisional terms. In this article, we present the problems of the simulation of such systems. We propose a methodological approach based on the systemic and on the multi-agent concepts. It authorizes the data-processing and modeling distributions.
