Responses of drinking water bulk and biofilm microbiota to elevated water age in bench-scale simulated distribution systems

Reductions in nonresidential water demand during the COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the importance of understanding how water age impacts drinking water quality and microbiota in piped distribution systems. Using benchtop model distribution systems, we aimed to characterize the impacts of elevated water age on microbiota in bulk water and pipe wall biofilms. Five replicate constant-flow reactors were fed with municipal chloraminated tap water for 6 months prior to building closures and 7 months after. After building closures, chloramine levels entering the reactors dropped; in the reactor bulk water and biofilms the mean cell counts and ATP concentrations increased over an order of magnitude while the detection of opportunistic pathogens remained low. Water age, and the corresponding physicochemical changes, strongly influenced microbial abundance and community composition. Differential initial microbial colonization also had a lasting influence on microbial communities in each reactor (i.e., historical contingency).

Effect of booster disinfection on the prevalence of microbial antibiotic resistance and bacterial community in a simulated drinking water distribution system

Booster disinfection was often applied to control the microorganism's growth in long-distance water supply systems. The effect of booster disinfection on the changing patterns of antibiotic resistance and bacterial community was investigated by a simulated water distribution system (SWDS). The results showed that the antibiotic resistance bacteria (ARB) and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) were initially removed after dosing disinfectants (chlorine and chloramine), but then increased with the increasing water age. However, the relative abundance of ARGs significantly increased after booster disinfection both in buck water and biofilm, then decreased along the pipeline. The pipe materials and disinfectant type also affected the antibiotic resistance. Chlorine was more efficient in controlling microbes and ARGs than chloramine. Compared with UPVC and PE pipes, SS pipes had the lowest total bacteria, ARB concentration, and ARB percentage, mainly due to higher disinfectant residuals and a smoother surface. The significant correlation (rs = 0.77, p < 0.001) of the 16S rRNA genes was observed between buck water and biofilm, while the correlations of targeted ARGs were found to be weak. Bray-Curtis similarity index indicated that booster disinfection significantly changed the biofilm bacterial community and the disinfectant type also had a marked impact on the bacterial community. At the genus level, the relative abundance of Pseudomonas, Sphingomonas, and Methylobacterium significantly increased after booster disinfection. Mycobacterium increased after chloramination while decreased after chlorination, indicating Mycobacterium might resist chloramine. Pseudomonas, Methylobacterium, and Phreatobacter were found to correlate well with the relative abundance of ARGs. These results highlighted antibiotic resistance shift and bacterial community alteration after booster disinfection, which may be helpful in controlling potential microbial risk in drinking water.

DATA REPLICATION IN DISTRIBUTED SYSTEMS USING OLYMPIAD OPTIMIZATION ALGORITHM

Achieving timely access to data objects is a major challenge in big distributed systems like the Internet of Things (IoT) platforms. Therefore, minimizing the data read and write operation time in distributed systems has elevated to a higher priority for system designers and mechanical engineers. Replication and the appropriate placement of the replicas on the most accessible data servers is a problem of NP-complete optimization. The key objectives of the current study are minimizing the data access time, reducing the quantity of replicas, and improving the data availability. The current paper employs the Olympiad Optimization Algorithm (OOA) as a novel population-based and discrete heuristic algorithm to solve the replica placement problem which is also applicable to other fields such as mechanical and computer engineering design problems. This discrete algorithm was inspired by the learning process of student groups who are preparing for the Olympiad exams. The proposed algorithm, which is divide-and-conquer-based with local and global search strategies, was used in solving the replica placement problem in a standard simulated distributed system. The 'European Union Database' (EUData) was employed to evaluate the proposed algorithm, which contains 28 nodes as servers and a network architecture in the format of a complete graph. It was revealed that the proposed technique reduces data access time by 39% with around six replicas, which is vastly superior to the earlier methods. Moreover, the standard deviation of the results of the algorithm's different executions is approximately 0.0062, which is lower than the other techniques' standard deviation within the same experiments.

Magnetic ion exchange resin for reducing disinfection byproducts in drinking water: Pilot-scale study and organic matter characterization

Disinfection is an essential step in drinking water treatment to prevent waterborne illnesses. However, reaction of disinfectants with organic matter in the water can produce carcinogenic disinfection byproducts (DBPs), including trihalomethanes (THMs) and haloacetic acids (HAAs). Magnetic ion exchange (MIEX) resin has been used as a pretreatment to remove organics and reduce DBPs. In this study, a pilot-scale water treatment plant in Birmingham, AL (USA) that employed MIEX as a pretreatment to the conventional pilot treatment train was compared against an adjacent full-scale train that did not use MIEX. THM and HAA formation was tested via simulated distribution system (SDS) testing, and changes in organic character were assessed using fluorescence spectroscopy. MIEX treatment provided 20 % and 25 % removal of THMs and HAAs, respectively, compared to the full-scale treatment under typical SDS conditions. With higher residence times and incubation temperatures (15 days at 35 °C), MIEX treatment reduced HAAs by 36 %. Parallel factor (PARAFAC) analysis revealed that MIEX treatment reduced loadings for a terrestrial humic-like component. Additionally, MIEX treatment resulted in secondary benefits, including a reduction in the coagulant feed rate and a more stable pH and chlorine residual in the MIEX-treated water compared to full-scale treatment.

Total organic halogen (TOX) in drinking water: Occurrence, correlation analysis, and precursor removal during drinking water treatment

Total organic halogen (TOX) in drinking water provides a measurement of the overall organic halogenated disinfection by-products (DBPs) formed during disinfection. Yangtze River Delta is one of the regions with the highest population density, the fastest urbanization process, and the most severe water pollution in China. Collecting water samples from full-scale drinking water treatment plants (DWTPs) in this region, this study firstly surveyed TOX occurrence in drinking water. Besides, the correlation of TOX formation potential (TOXFP) and trihalomethane formation potential (THMFP) with general water quality parameters (e.g., dissolved organic carbon [DOC], UV254, and specific ultraviolet absorbance) and the removal efficiencies of TOX precursors by different water treatment processes were also investigated. TOX levels in DWTP effluents (i.e., finished water) ranged from 29 to 165 μg/L (median 67 μg/L), and those in simulated distribution system waters ranged from 101 to 276 μg/L (median 158 μg/L). There were generally higher linear regression coefficient values for raw water (R2 = 0.51–0.88) than for treated water (R2 = 0.33–0.64) in terms of the relationship between DBP formation potentials and general parameters. However, a relatively stronger correlation between THMFP and TOXFP was observed for treated water (R2 = 0.80, p < 0.001) than for raw water (R2 = 0.64, p < 0.001). The overall treatment efficiencies of investigated parameters in DWTPs generally followed the order of UV254 > DOC > TOX precursors > THM precursors. Notably, the overall removal rates of DOC and TOX precursors in summer (averaging 59 % and 54 %, respectively) were obviously higher than those in winter (averaging 39 % and 38 %, respectively), which was assumed to be related to the seasonal variation of bioactivity in sand filter. These results could expand the knowledge of TOX in drinking water, and provide valuable perspectives to water industry and DBP research.

Study on Malfunction of OCR Due to Penetration of DER into Power Distribution System with SFCL

Due to the demand for eco-friendly energy, distributed energy resources (DERs) using renewable energy have increased. The increase in DER has caused the power system to become more complex and caused problems in the protection system. Typical problems include an increase in fault current and a problem that causes malfunction of the overcurrent relay (OCR). If the fault current increases and exceeds the capacity of the existing protection devices, it may lead to a large blackout. The most effective way to limit the fault current is to install a superconducting current limiter (SFCL). The installation of SFCL and system penetration of DER both affect OCR operating characteristics. In this paper, a simulated power distribution system is constructed and OCR malfunctions caused by DER penetration and SFCL installation are analyzed.

Effects of UV-based oxidation processes on the degradation of microplastic: Fragmentation, organic matter release, toxicity and disinfection byproduct formation

The occurrence and transformation of microplastics (MPs) remaining in the water treatment plants has recently attracted considerable attention. However, few efforts have been made to investigate the behavior of dissolved organic matter (DOM) derived from MPs during oxidation processes. In this study, the characteristics of DOM leached from MPs during typical ultraviolet (UV)-based oxidation was focused on. The toxicity and disinfection byproduct (DBP) formation potentials of MP-derived DOM were further investigated. Overall, UV-based oxidation significantly enhanced the aging and fragmentation of highly hydroscopic MPs. The mass scales of leachates to MPs increased from 0.03% - 0.18% at initial stage to 0.09% - 0.71% after oxidation, which were significantly higher than those leached by natural light exposure. Combined fluorescence analysis with high resolution mass spectrometer scan confirmed that the dominant MP-derived DOM are chemical additives. PET-derived DOM and PA6-derived DOM showed inhibition of Vibrio fischeri activity with corresponding EC50 of 2.84 mg/L and 4.58 mg/L of DOC. Bioassay testing with Chlorella vulgaris and Microcystis aeruginosa showed that high concentrations of MP-derived DOM inhibited algal growth by disrupting the cell membrane permeability and integrity. MP-derived DOM had a similar chlorine consumption (1.63 ± 0.41 mg/DOC) as surface water (1.0 - 2.0 mg/DOC), and MP-derived DOM mainly served as precursors for the investigated DBPs. Contrary to the results of previous studies, the DBP yields from MP-derived DOM were relatively lower than those of aquatic DOM under simulated distribution system conditions. This suggests that MP-derived DOM itself rather than serving as DBP precursor might be potential toxic concern.

Biofilm Control in Flow-Through Systems Using Polyvalent Phages Delivered by Peptide-Modified M13 Coliphages with Enhanced Polysaccharide Affinity.

Eradication of biofilms that may harbor pathogens in water distribution systems is an elusive goal due to limited penetration of residual disinfectants. Here, we explore the use of engineered filamentous coliphage M13 for enhanced biofilm affinity and precise delivery of lytic polyvalent phages (i.e., broad-host-range phages lysing multiple host strains after infection). To promote biofilm attachment, we modified the M13 major coat protein (pVIII) by inserting a peptide sequence with high affinity for Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa) extracellular polysaccharides (commonly present on the surface of biofilms in natural and engineered systems). Additionally, we engineered the M13 tail fiber protein (pIII) to contain a peptide sequence capable of binding a specific polyvalent lytic phage. The modified M13 had 102- and 5-fold higher affinity for P. aeruginosa-dominated mixed-species biofilms than wildtype M13 and unconjugated polyvalent phage, respectively. When applied to a simulated water distribution system, the resulting phage conjugates achieved targeted phage delivery to the biofilm and were more effective than polyvalent phages alone in reducing live bacterial biomass (84 vs 34%) and biofilm surface coverage (81 vs 22%). Biofilm regrowth was also mitigated as high phage concentrations induced residual bacteria to downregulate genes associated with quorum sensing and extracellular polymeric substance secretion. Overall, we demonstrate that engineered M13 can enable more accurate delivery of polyvalent phages to biofilms in flow-through systems for enhanced biofilm control.

Effect of Pipe Materials on Bacterial Community, Redox Reaction, and Functional Genes

In the present study, the effect of pipe materials on water quality as well as the microbial community was researched with static devices as well as dynamic ones. Five kinds of pipe materials (SP: steel plastic composite pipe, SS: stainless steel pipe, DI: ductile iron pipe, CI: cast iron pipe, GS: galvanized steel pipe) were chosen, and the soaking experiment was carried out with bench-scale devices. To further investigate the performance of pipe materials over a long term, a pilot-scale simulated drinking water distribution system was constructed, and the water quality parameters were monitored for six months. The pipe materials were ranked as SP, DI, and CI by the order of increasing turbidity, CODMn, and NH3-N. Furthermore, the biofilm samples were analyzed via pyrosequencing and COG functional categories. The DI biofilm possessed the highest bacterial diversity with a Shannon index of 3.56, followed by SP (3.14) and CI (0.77). The presence of nitrate-reducing bacteria (NRB), iron-oxidizing bacteria (IOB), iron-reducing bacteria (IRB), and sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB)was identified, and NRB composed the largest share in all pipe materials (13.0%–17.2%), with other redox bacteria making up a minor proportion (0.02%–1.52%). NRB and IRB inhibited the corrosion process while IOB and SRB enhanced it. Most dominant genera present in samples were derived firstly from soil or active sludge, indicating a turbidity problem due to soil contamination in the distribution network.

Simultaneous prediction of trihalomethanes, haloacetic acids, haloacetonitriles and haloacetamides using simulated distribution system tests

Inhibiting the increase of antibiotic resistance genes during drinking water distribution by superior microbial interface using Fe modified granular activated carbon

The effects of biological activated carbon treatment using Fe2O3-modified granular activated carbon in inhibiting antibiotic resistance genes in simulated drinking water distribution systems was compared with unmodified granular activated carbon as a reference. Fe2O3-modified biofiltration resulted in a sustained inhibition of resistance genes during drinking water chlorination and distribution (relative abundance in simulated tap water after the modified and unmodified filtration was 1.31% and 9.40%, respectively). A new electron transfer pathway occurring in attached biofilms on Fe2O3-modified granular activated carbon surface, which was identified using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and the phenanthroline spectrophotometric method, enhanced the extracellular electron transfer rate and weakened the pressure of organic micropollutants on microorganisms. Hence, the relative abundance of resistance genes (36.32%) and integron (8.79%) on modified carbon was considerably lower than that on unmodified carbon (115.59% and 13.85%, respectively). Meanwhile, the secreted extracellular polymeric substances on modified carbon presented higher flocculating efficiency and better mechanical stability, resulting in the suspended extracellular polymeric substances in downstream water exhibiting stronger electrostatic repulsion. The particle-attached biofilms in downstream distribution systems consistently failed to form larger aggregates, inhibiting horizontal gene transfer, and overall microbial metabolism. Based on network analysis, 11 OTUs in the water samples from raw water to simulated tap water formed an extremely interrelated module with no links to target resistance genes and integron. Therefore, a range of microbial variations triggered by the microbial interface on modified carbon successfully controlled the transfer of antibiotic resistance genes-associated risk from biological activated carbon effluent to tap water. Our findings revealed that enhancing the microbial interface using Fe2O3-modified granular activated carbon is a promising option for inhibiting the antibiotic resistance genes increase in tap water.

Improving the Performance of Integrated Power-Hardware-in-the-Loop and Quasi-Static Time-Series Simulations

This article introduces a novel multirate cosimulation architecture that overcomes previous challenges integrating faster real-time, microseconds-scale, power-hardware-in-the-loop (PHIL) with larger scale but slower, real-time, seconds-scale, quasi-static time-series (QSTS) simulation. Specifically, an intermediate reduced-equivalent electromagnetic transient (EMT) model duplicates the key power system topology to capture high-speed dynamics and converge hardware-power system interactions between QSTS updates. Exchanging multidimensional parameter vectors (loads, control status, etc.) between the QSTS and EMT models enables capturing the interactions of the rich, high-node-count (thousands of electrical nodes) QSTS model with the hardware. This architecture offers full spatial resolution from QSTS, including individual load dynamics, actual distribution management system controls, and nodal voltages. Simultaneously, the intermediate EMT model provides more detailed high-speed transients of key distributed energy resource hardware interactions. In addition, we use careful PHIL interface design and the exchange of complex power data, rather than current, to further improve performance. This cosimulation architecture is demonstrated by testing a simulated distribution system with an interconnected 500-kVA advanced photovoltaic (PV) inverter in PHIL. The architecture successfully captured PV local volt-volt ampere reactive (volt-VAR) control interactions with the larger network under time-varying electrical and weather conditions.

Chlorination contributes to multi-antibiotic resistance in a pilot-scale water distribution system

Abstract The generation and dissemination of antibiotic resistance bacteria (ARB) and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in the environment has become a critical risk to human health. This study is based on a pilot-scale simulated water distribution system to understand the effects of chlorine disinfection treatment (without free chlorine) on ARB and ARGs in biofilms. The hydraulic parameters and pipe materials of the system were simulated based on a drinking water system. The results of the colony counts showed that bacterial multi-antibiotic resistance could be enhanced 13-fold in the biofilms of the pipeline. The use of high-throughput qPCR (HT-qPCR) indicated that the total relative abundance of ARGs in biofilm samples increased significantly (p &amp;lt; 0.05), while the diversity of bacteria was shown to be reduced via taxonomic analysis of the V3–V4 region of 16S rRNA. The prominent types of ARGs were conferred resistance by aminoglycoside and β-lactam after the chlorine disinfection treatment, and antibiotic deactivation was the main mechanism. Phyla Proteobacteria had the highest abundance in both treatment and control groups but decreased from 70.81% (initial biofilm sample) to 26.09% (the sixth-month biofilm sample) in the treatment groups. The results show that the chlorine disinfection plays a role in the risk of development of bacterial antibiotic resistance in pipe networks owing to bacteria in biofilms. This study was the first to investigate the contribution of chlorination without free chlorine to the bacterial community shift and resistome alteration in biofilms at a pilot-test level.

Investigation of Harmonic Reduction Using Passive Filters in a Distribution Network in Basra City

Harmonics in current and voltage waveforms produced by nonlinear loads in a distribution system can be minimised using passive filters; however, implementing these filters requires the calculation of several suitable parameters for filter components. This work aimed to simulate and analyse the harmonics in the Al-Itihad 11 kV distribution system that branches off from Zubayr substation (33/11 kV) in Basra in Iraq using MATLAB/SIMULINK. Five non-linear loads were simulated to generate harmonics in the simulated Al-Itihad distribution system, and for each non-linear load three types of filters were tested: a single tuned filter (STF), double tuned filter (DTF), and C-type filter. The objectives of these filters to minimise the total harmonic distortion (THD) in the voltage and current waveforms, to minimise the total current, and to improve the power factor of the distribution system. The simulation results showed a reduction in total harmonic distortion, a reduction in the current at the main distribution feeder, and an improvement in the power factor of the feeder.

Analysis of interconnected configuration for penetration of distributed generation

This paper visualizes the feasibility of the proposed interconnected distributed power system configuration, which aims at incorporating the electricity generation from renewables and to cater to low voltage areas of radial distribution network. The shortcoming of existing traditional radial systems is inconsistent load distribution and technical viability in incorporating renewable sources without disturbing the power system. Sustainable development is achieved with improvement in the prevailing distribution system. Maximum potential benefits in terms of demand-supply balance and integrating renewables can be achieved by selecting properly placed and optimally sized distributed generation sources in a distribution network. The generation facility is selected as per the geographical profile of the location and placed on the weakest node. The weakest node is the low voltage profile region where the maximum output of the integration of power sources is beneficial. In this paper, the ZIP model-based methodology is applied to feeder loads on the data set of the distribution grid of the National University of Science & Technology (NUST), Islamabad, Pakistan. The comparative analysis is performed on a radial network of NUST distribution grid and compared with a simulated interconnected distribution system of the same distribution network on MATLAB software as a case study to observe the performance of interconnected power systems. This analysis results in better voltage profiles for interconnected networks, compared to radial networks. That said, incorporating a Distributed Generation (DG) source in the interconnected network builds a substantial impact on the distribution system voltage profile. The efficacy of the proposed interconnected system confirms the performance improvement of the distribution power system. The VSI values for interconnected systems give better results which is further justified by the machine learning algorithm, Logistic regression. The simulation results indicate that the Interconnected system encourages penetrations of solar, wind, gas turbine, and other renewable sources near the low voltage end in the distribution system. © 2021 Bilal Asghar Farooqi et al.

Distribution Feeder-Scale Fast Frequency Response via Optimal Coordination of Net-Load Resources—Part II: Large-Scale Demonstration

This article is the second of a two-part series in which we develop and experimentally demonstrate a hierarchical control solution for optimally coordinating thousands of deferrable loads and distributed energy resources (DERs) to provide fast frequency response (FFR) from an entire distribution feeder. In Part I, we developed and proved practical algorithms for fast, cost-based optimal dispatch and for determining the optimal amount of headroom to operate solar inverters with to support FFR dispatch while minimizing opportunity cost. Simulation results in Part I demonstrated the advantages of the hierarchical dispatch approach in being able to maintain fast solution times needed for FFR even when the problem size increases. In Part II, we implement the algorithms developed in Part I in a novel, large-scale power hardware-in-the-loop experiment including embedded controllers and more than 100 powered appliance loads and DER connected to a simulated real-world distribution system with more than 10,000 controlled devices. Experimental results from multiple scenarios confirm that the optimal FFR dispatch approach scales well and can optimally coordinate more than 10,000 net-load resources across a distribution network while achieving hardware response times within 500 ms, which is not possible using state-of-the-art optimal coordination approaches.

Regulated disinfection byproduct formation over long residence times

Design and operation of drinking water treatment plants and associated distribution systems with long residence times are complicated by the formation of regulated disinfection byproducts (DBPs), comprised of total trihalomethanes (TTHM) and five haloacetic acids (HAA5). Treated water dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations, the unit processes required to meet those DOC concentrations, and disinfection strategies (e.g., booster chlorination) are the primary design and operational considerations that can require extensive testing or modeling to determine. In this study, twelve different treated drinking waters were generated at the bench-scale using ferric chloride coagulation and granular activated carbon adsorption from four parent raw waters collected from the San Juan River representing spring runoff, monsoon, and low flow events. Treated drinking waters with DOC concentrations of 0.9, 1.4, and 1.9 mg/L were tested for regulated DBP formation under simulated distribution system (SDS) conditions over residence times as long as 56 days and compared to 7-day formation potential (FP) testing. SDS free chlorine concentrations were maintained between 0.2 and 1.0 mg/L as Cl2 through periodic booster chlorination. Maximum SDS TTHM and HAA5 concentrations were 0.208 and 0.074 mg/L, respectively, with formation consistently varying by approximately ±20% across the four different parent raw waters despite having been treated to the same three DOC concentrations. An average of four existing TTHM models consistently underpredicted TTHM formation by approximatively 20%. Long considered a conservative measure of DBP formation, FP testing also underpredicted SDS DBP formation at 56 days by approximately 40% on average. The DBP testing approach presented in this study allowed for the development of several significant linear relationships for predicting DBP concentrations based on treated water ultraviolet light absorbance at 254 nm, water temperature, and cumulative free chlorine demand.

Enhancing inhibition of disinfection byproducts formation and opportunistic pathogens growth during drinking water distribution by Fe2O3/Coconut shell activated carbon.

The effects of biological activated carbon treatment using Fe2O3 modified coconut shell-based activated carbon (Fe/CAC) were investigated on the occurrence of opportunistic pathogens (OPs) and formation of disinfection by-products (DBPs) in simulated drinking water distribution systems (DWDSs) with unmodified CAC as a reference. In the effluent of annular reactor (AR) with Fe/CAC, the OPs growth and DBPs formation were inhibited greatly. Based on the differential pulse voltammetry and dehydrogenase activity tests, it was verified that extracellular electron transfer was enhanced in the attached biofilms of Fe/CAC, hence improving the microbial metabolic activity and biological removal of organic matter especially DBPs precursors. Meanwhile, the extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) on the surface of Fe/CAC exhibited stronger viscosity, higher flocculating efficiency and better mechanical stability, avoiding bacteria or small-scale biofilms falling off into the water. Consequently, the microbial biomass and EPS substances amount decreased markedly in the effluent of Fe/CAC filter. More importantly, Fe/CAC did significantly enhance the shaping role on microbial community of downstream DWDSs, continuously excluding OPs advantage and inhibiting EPS production. The weakening of EPS in DWDSs resulted in decrease of microbial chlorine-resistance ability and EPS-derived DBPs precursors supply. Therefore, the deterioration of water quality in DWDSs was inhibited greatly, sustainably maintaining the safety of tap water. Our findings indicated that optimizing biological activated carbon treatment by interface modification is a promising method for improving water quality in DWDSs.

Decreased natural organic matter in water distribution decreases nitrite formation in non-disinfected conditions, via enhanced nitrite oxidation

Nitrite in drinking water is a potentially harmful substance for humans, and controlling nitrite formation in drinking water distribution systems (DWDSs) is highly important. The effect of natural organic matter (NOM) on the formation of nitrite in simulated distribution systems was studied. The objective was to inspect how a reduced NOM concentration affected nitrite development via nitrification, separated from the effects of disinfection. We observed that nitrite formation was noticeably sensitive to the changes in the NOM concentrations. Nitrite declined with reduced NOM (TOC 1.0 mg L-1) but increased with the normal NOM concentration of tap water (TOC 1.6 mg L-1). Ammonium oxidation was not altered by the reduced NOM, however, nitrite oxidation was enhanced significantly according to the pseudo-first order reaction rate model interpretation. The enhanced nitrite oxidation was observed with both ammonium and nitrite as the initial nitrogen source. The theoretical maximum nitrite concentrations were higher with the normal concentration of NOM than with reduced NOM. The results suggest that the role of nitrite oxidation may be quite important in nitrite formation in DWDSs and worth further studies. As a practical result, our study supported enhanced NOM removal in non-disinfected DWDSs.

Interactive Effects of Copper Pipe, Stagnation, Corrosion Control, and Disinfectant Residual Influenced Reduction of Legionella pneumophila during Simulations of the Flint Water Crisis.

Flint, MI experienced two outbreaks of Legionnaires’ Disease (LD) during the summers of 2014 and 2015, coinciding with use of Flint River as a drinking water source without corrosion control. Using simulated distribution systems (SDSs) followed by stagnant simulated premise (i.e., building) plumbing reactors (SPPRs) containing cross-linked polyethylene (PEX) or copper pipe, we reproduced trends in water chemistry and Legionella proliferation observed in the field when Flint River versus Detroit water were used before, during, and after the outbreak. Specifically, due to high chlorine demand in the SDSs, SPPRs with treated Flint River water were chlorine deficient and had elevated L. pneumophila numbers in the PEX condition. SPPRs with Detroit water, which had lower chlorine demand and higher residual chlorine, lost all culturable L. pneumophila within two months. L. pneumophila also diminished more rapidly with time in Flint River SPPRs with copper pipe, presumably due to the bacteriostatic properties of elevated copper concentrations caused by lack of corrosion control and stagnation. This study confirms hypothesized mechanisms by which the switch in water chemistry, pipe materials, and different flow patterns in Flint premise plumbing may have contributed to observed LD outbreak patterns.
