Mole gun — an unusual firearm, a case note

There are different kinds of types of firearms used worldwide and of different origin. This case note evaluates the mole gun, which cannot be found in the literature. This simple gun, which is usually used in the fields against moles, was used in an apartment as a trap against burglars. This instrument manufactured to be used as a trap against detrimental animals, and not to be used as a firearm, can create dangerous situations, if used for different purposes.

Instabilities Due to Interaction between a Slow Electron Beam and a Plasma

A mercury plasma is perturbed experimentally by a slow electron beam whose velocity is of the order of a thermal velocity of medium electrons. A special but a simple gun is used to drive the slow electron beam into a plasma region. The beam is therefore considered to be of the drifted Maxwellian distribution. Instabilities are classified into the two types; one of them is a wave of beam-electron coupling and the other is a wave of beam-ion coupling. Unstable regions are shown as a function of the frequency and the electron beam velocity, and explained on the basis of the theory of drift instability in three-component plasma system.

Desorption from Surfaces by Slow-Electron Impact

An adsorbate-covered W field emitter was bombarded from one side with low-energy electrons from a simple gun and changes were looked for visually and by work-function measurements. Beam intensities were determined by replacing the field emitter with a microprobe and were approximates 10/sup -4/ amp/cm/sup 2/ above 10 ev. With hydrogen on W no desorption could be detected at any coverage between 4 and 300 deg K, with energies from 10 to 200 ev. With oxygen, desorption was detected only from a full layer, deposited by low-temperature spreading and heated to 80 deg K to evaporate physisorbed oxygen. Desorption was limited to energies)25 ev. The salient feature of the results is the remarkable small reaction cross section, which is approximates 10/sup -4/ that of ionization or excitation in the gas phase. (P.C.H.)
