Working across boundaries

Abstract We are delighted to publish the abstracts presented at the Royal Pharmaceutical Society (RPS) Annual Conference 2024 in this International Journal of Pharmacy Practice Issue Supplement. The conference entitled ‘Working across boundaries: Embracing new opportunities and empowering excellence’ included the themes of: Enhancing patient care; Advancing the workforce; Science & Research; and Your RPS. It was held both online and in person at Convene, 133 Houndsditch, London on 8 November 2024. As the flagship event for the RPS, the conference hosted a full day of discussions centred on the topic of cross-boundary working, from dealing with medicines shortages, to prescribing and clinical supervision, to the strategic work of the RPS, and finally to innovations and research that will be shaping practice. The morning’s keynote presentation was delivered by Dr Liz O'Riordan, a breast oncology surgeon who herself has had breast cancer three times, speaking on the topic of high-quality care from the perspectives of being both a medical doctor and a patient. The conference also included a keynote panel discussion in the afternoon with the four of the United Kingdom’s Chief Pharmaceutical Officers, namely David Webb (NHS England), Andrew Evans (Welsh Government), Cathy Harrison (Northern Ireland), and Alison Strath (Scotland). The event included a multitude of research and innovation presentations, as posters and orals, many published as abstracts herewith. We were particularly pleased to see the return of five oral research presentations selected from the submitted abstracts, covering a breadth of methodologies. We would like to acknowledge all those who have contributed to making this event happen, in particular members of the conference steering committee co-chaired by Helen Chang and Anna Pielach at the RPS; Leah Burton and Lauren Ross from the RPS Science and Research team who managed the abstract processes; Dr Christopher Martin and Dr Diane Ashiru-Oredope, also from the RPS Science and Research team, who joined the Conference Abstract Review Panel; Science and Research Committee members who joined us on the Conference Abstract Review Panel, namely Dr Mar Estupiñan Fdez. de Mesa, Dr Andy Fox, Prof. Amira Guirguis, Dr Gillian Hawksworth, Prof. Delyth James, Dr Rachel Palmer, and Dr Ka-Wai Wan, as well as additional members of the Conference Abstract Review Panel, including Dr Paul Forsyth, Ola Howell, Dr Louise Hughes, Dr Matthew Ivory, Prof. Catriona Mathieson, Prof. Hamde Nazar, Prof. Philip Rogers, Dr Julian Smith, and Dr Sara Visram. Developing a Rural Teacher Education Curriculum Package

This paper documents the development of a new website (www.rrrtec.net.au) specifically designed to better equip teacher educators to prepare graduates to teach in rural and regional communities. The two year study (2009-2011) that informed the website’s creation included three data sources: A literature review of research into rural teacher education, a survey of pre-service students who had completed a rural practicum and interviews with teacher educators about the current strategies they used to raise awareness and understanding of the needs of rural students, their families, and communities. An analysis of the data revealed that teacher educators need to focus more on developing graduates to be not only ‘classroom ready’ but also ‘school and community ready’. This analysis provided the framework for the creation of a set of curriculum modules and resources including journal articles, film clips, websites and books that teacher educators could readily and publicly access and use in their own classroom teaching. ANDREW RUDD The “Other” Robert Bloomfield: “To Immagination” (1800) and the Quest for an Authentic Poetic Voice T he opening of robert Bloomfield’s the farmer’s boy: a rural poem (1800) tells the reader very emphatically what sort of poem it is not: No deeds of arms my humble lines rehearse; No Alpine wonders thunder through my verse, The roaring cataract, the snow-topt hill, Inspiring awe, till breath itself stands still; Nature’s sublime scenes ne’er charm’d mine eyes, Nor Science led me through the boundless skies[.] Instead, it promises to depict “meaner objects” and “retrace the paths of wild obscurity,” positioning its author as someone whose principal con­ cerns are rural life and labor, who has not traveled to witness exotic natural wonders, who is not well educated and who, in both senses of the term, knows his place. SiR, 55 (Summer 2016) 239 240 ANDREW RUDD many of his readers and not unreasonably so, given that, at first glance, ru­ ral themes underpin the majority of his poetic output, from Rural Tales, Ballads, and Songs (1802), Good News; or, Tidingsfrom the Farm (1804), Wild Flowers (1806) to The Banks of Wye (1811) and May-Day with the Muses (1822), his last published collection. Insofar as Bloomfield is known to the general reader at all, he is still likely to be categorized as a “rustic” versifier of the English countryside. Yet a very different Bloomfield emerges in “To Inimagination,” a roughly contemporaneous but unpublished poem brought to light and ana­ lyzed in 2009 by Tim Fulford.2 Here, Bloomfield seemingly goes out of his way to include all the elements he chose to reject from The Farmer’s Boy: “To Immagination” does describe scenes of conquest and deeds of arms; it does depict mountainous wonders; and, at its climax, it does transport the reader to the “sublime scenes” of Niagara Falls. The reader may well ask: was Bloomfield the poet interested in such grandiose spectacles or was he not? Which poem represents the “real” Bloomfield? These are increasingly important questions given the valuable recovery work that has taken place in relation to the laboring-class literary tradition by John Goodndge, Bridget Keegan, William Christmas, and numerous others.1 Where once laboring-class authors might have been regarded as writing with a broadly cohesive sense of purpose on the basis of their shared social backgrounds, recent scholarship emphasizes the individual differences between authors and the multiplicity of ways in which laboring-class writers could engage with, vary, or reject established canons of polite taste; as Goodridge writes in the introduction to the seminal anthology Eighteenth-Century English Laboring-Class Poets (2003), “one thing these writers have rarely been al­ lowed is simply to be poets.”'1 In “To Immagination,” a close reading ofwhich will form the main sub2 . The Poem as a Bodily Thing:

Ross Gay's books of poetry include Against Which (CavanKerry Press, 2006) and Bringing the Shovel Down (University of Pittsburgh Press, 2011). His poems have appeared in many magazines and journals, including American Poetry Review, MARGIE, and Ploughshares. With the artist Kimberly Thomas, he has collaborated on several artists' books: The Cold Loop, BRN2HNT, and The Bullet. He is an editor with the chapbook press Q Avenue, whose recently published books include Chromosomory by Layli Long Soldier, Amigos by Matthew Dickman, Ad Hoc by Chris Mattingly, and Dolly by Kimberly Thomas and Simone White. Gay received his MFA in poetry from Sarah Lawrence College, and his Ph.D. in American literature from Temple University. He teaches in the low-residency MFA program in poetry at Drew University and in Indiana University's English department.

Effectiveness of public health and education programs for creating awareness of and managing cardiovascular disease

Correspondence: Simon White School of Pharmacy, Keele University, Keele, Staffordshire, ST5 5BG, UK Tel +440 178 273 4772 email s.j.white@mema.keele.ac.uk Abstract: This paper reviews the effectiveness of public health and education programs for creating awareness of, preventing and managing cardiovascular disease (CVD), with a particular focus on their impact on people’s behavior. Evidence-based guidance recommends that such programs, eg, cardiac rehabilitation, should include risk assessment, modification of lifestyle risk factors and, where appropriate, medication. However, despite substantial evidence of cardiac rehabilitation being beneficial, a significant proportion of eligible patients fail to receive cardiac rehabilitation and numerous barriers to attendance remain, particularly because cardiac rehabilitation service provision continues to be patchy and of variable quality. Evidence suggests that educational programs to prevent CVD may achieve favorable reductions in mortality and overall CVD risk. However, whilst people tend to have significant knowledge of the modifiable risk factors for CVD, this does not necessarily lead to action to reduce risk, because lay epidemiology appears to play a significant role in sophisticated determinations of CVD causation, amongst other factors. Some people, but not all, make and maintain some lifestyle changes, but not necessarily all of the changes recommended, because they may only change aspects of lifestyle that are perceived to have been likely causes of their CVD. In addition, many people experience difficulty in making and maintaining lifestyle changes. There appears to be considerable disquiet among patients about taking medicines prescribed for CVD, particularly concerning side effects, which in some instances may affect medicine-taking. New developments and patient approaches recognize the wider societal issues that influence the lifestyle choices people make. Initiatives to increase attendance and widen access to cardiac rehabilitation have included home-based and technological innovations as alternatives to hospital-based cardiac rehabilitation programs. Effective future approaches are likely to build on these developments, and offer even greater choice in accessing preventative services.

Contesting the Curriculum in the Schooling of Indigenous Children in Australia and the United States: From Eurocentrism to Culturally Powerful Pedagogies

This paper presents comparative research which examines issues in teaching Indigenous primary school students in Australia and the USA. It portrays the dilemmas for teachers and students when the curriculum is dominated by a monocultural, Eurocentric ethos. It then describes schools that have moved towards an alternative curriculum. In discussing postcolonial challenges for teacher educators and education policy makers arising out of these issues, the paper continues the debate about postcolonial approaches to cross-cultural and anti-racist education for Indigenous children in their community contexts. It argues that elements for significant educational change exist in both countries, and discusses how these changes need to be expanded and systematised to achieve a culturally powerful curriculum in Indigenous schools.
