Composting and fermentation: mitigating hop latent viroid infection risk in hop residues

AbstractHop cultivation, integral to the brewing industry, faces challenges from viroids, especially the citrus bark cracking viroid (CBCVd) but also the hop latent viroid (HLVd) influences hop cone quality. We focused on the degradation kinetics of HLVd thereby covering compost, silage, and digestate made from hop residues. In this study, HLVd serves as a model for understanding CBCVd, which causes significant stunting and yield losses in European hop crops. Composting experiments revealed that although composting significantly lowers HLVd levels, complete degradation within 7 weeks is not guaranteed, with loose compost showing a more rapid reduction than compacted variants. Infectivity experiments conducted using inocula obtained from HLVd-infected hop plant residues exposed to composting, ensiling, and biogas digestate did not result in the transmission of HLVd to viroid-free plants. Also extracting and analyzing the soil-root mixture of plants inoculated with HLVd-infected hop residues did not show evidence for viroid persistence. Degradation experiments further differentiated between the physiochemical and biological influences on viroid and viroid-like random RNA stability, showing that higher temperatures of 50 °C enhance degradation over 40 °C, and pH levels of 5 or 7 are slowing degradation. In contrast deionized water or a pH of 4 or 9 enhances viroid degradation. Adding extracts from digestate accelerated the process indicating a role of biological activity. Interestingly, a viroid-like random RNA with similar physiochemical properties, showed to degrade faster compared to HLVd, suggesting high robustness of the actual viroid secondary structure. These findings offer valuable insights into managing HLVd in hops and potentially other crops, highlighting effective strategies to mitigate viroid spread, and contributing to broader understanding of RNA degradation in agriculture.

Physicochemical properties and antibacterial activity evaluation of new indigo extract from Baphicacanthus cusia (Nees) Bremek prepared by chemical conversion method

The effect of acidolysis time, hydrochloric acid concentration, ozonization time and pH on the yield of indigo were investigated by single factor experiment using dried leaves of Baphicacanthus cusia (Nees) Bremek (DLB) as raw material. On this basis, the technological condition for preparing new indigo extract (NIE) by directional chemical conversion method was optimized by orthogonal experiment. Then, the physiochemical properties of NIE were analyzed by combustion assay, nitric acid assay, thin layer chromatography identification assay, moisture detection and water-soluble pigment observation assay. Moreover, UPLC-Q-TOF-MS/MS technology was utilized to compare chemical composition difference between the NIE and traditional indigo naturalis (TIN). Finally, NIE emulsion was prepared by ultrasound assisted high pressure homogenization method and its stability, antibacterial activity as well as antibacterial mechanism were evaluated. The experimental results showed that optimum process for preparing NIE were hydrochloric acid concentration of 2 %, ozonization time of 3 min, pH of 7 and acidolysis time of 1 h; Under this condition, the content and yield of indigo in the NIE were significantly improved, which could reach up to 42.6 ± 0.28 % and 2.26 ± 0.04 %, separately. NIE possessed similar physiochemical properties with TIN described in Chinese pharmacopoeia 2020, and had more diverse active ingredients than TIN. The prepared NIE emulsion demonstrated excellent stability, whether at dark or bright place, and no matter at low temperature (4 ℃) or room temperature (25 ℃), the particle size, PDI, pH and indigo content of which displayed little variation. In addition, the NIE emulsion owned good inhibitory activity against S. aureus, and its MIC and MBC values were 40 and 80 μg/mL, respectively. Moreover, NIE emulsion exhibited antibacterial effect by influencing cell membrane integrity, Ca2+-Mg2+-ATPase activity on the cell membrane and intracellular Ca2+ levels of S. aureus. All of above results will lay the foundation for the green and sustainable utilization of Baphicacanthus cusia (Nees) Bremek.

Use of Nonhuman Sera as a Highly Cost-Effective Internal Standard for Quantitation of Multiple Human Proteins Using Species-Specific Tryptic Peptides: Applicability in Clinical LC-MS Analyses.

Quantitation of proteins using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) is complex, with a multiplicity of options ranging from label-free techniques to chemically and metabolically labeling proteins. Increasingly, for clinically relevant analyses, stable isotope-labeled (SIL) internal standards (ISs) represent the "gold standard" for quantitation due to their similar physiochemical properties to the analyte, wide availability, and ability to multiplex to several peptides. However, the purchase of SIL-ISs is a resource-intensive step in terms of cost and time, particularly for screening putative biomarker panels of hundreds of proteins. We demonstrate an alternative strategy utilizing nonhuman sera as the IS for quantitation of multiple human proteins. We demonstrate the effectiveness of this strategy using two high abundance clinically relevant analytes, vitamin D binding protein [Gc globulin] (DBP) and albumin (ALB). We extend this to three putative risk markers for cardiovascular disease: plasma protease C1 inhibitor (SERPING1), annexin A1 (ANXA1), and protein kinase, DNA-activated catalytic subunit (PRKDC). The results show highly specific, reproducible, and linear measurement of the proteins of interest with comparable precision and accuracy to the gold standard SIL-IS technique. This approach may not be applicable to every protein, but for many proteins it can offer a cost-effective solution to LC-MS/MS protein quantitation.

Tunable Gas Admission via a "Molecular Trapdoor" Mechanism in a Flexible Cationic Metal-Organic Framework Featuring 1D Channels.

Achieving high gas selectivity is challenging when dealing with gas pairs of similar size and physiochemical properties. The "molecular trapdoor" mechanism discovered in zeolites holds promise for highly selective gas adsorption separation but faces limitations like constrained pore volume and slow adsorption kinetics. To address these challenges, for the first time, a flexible metal-organic framework (MOF) featuring 1D channels and functioning as a "molecular trapdoor" material is intoduced. Extra-framework anions act as "gate-keeping" groups at the narrowest points of channels, permitting gas admissions via gate opening induced by thermal/pressure stimuli and guest interactions. Different guest molecules induce varied energy barriers for anion movement, enabling gas separation based on distinct threshold temperatures for gas admission. The flexible framework of Pytpy MOFs, featuring swelling structure with rotatable pyridine rings, facilitates faster gas adsorption than zeolite. Analyzing anion properties of Pytpy MOFs reveals a guiding principle for selecting anions to tailor threshold gas admission. This study not only overcomes the kinetic limitations related to gas admission in the "molecular trapdoor" zeolites but also underscores the potential of developing MOFs as molecular trapdoor adsorbents, providing valuable insights for designing ionic MOFs tailored to diverse gas separation applications.

Abstract 5777: Rewiring EWS/FLI1 with transcriptional chemical inducers of proximity (TCIPs)

Abstract The purpose of this study was to determine if EWS/FLI1 (E/F), the oncogenic fusion protein that drives Ewing Sarcoma (ES), can be rewired to enhance expression of BCL6-controlled genes using Transcriptional Chemical Inducers of Proximity (TCIPs), a novel bivalent small molecule platform. TCIP molecules recruit a transcriptional regulator, such as BRD4, to the transcriptional repressor BCL6. Upon binding, a ternary complex is formed on chromatin at BCL6-bound loci, causing transcriptional upregulation of BCL6 target genes. Since E/F does not have a bona fide ligand, we have used an exogenously expressed N terminal FKBPF36V-EWS/FLI1 (N-FK-E/F) fusion system to study how modulation of E/F by TCIPs impacts the transcriptome of ES cells. To eliminate background signal from endogenous E/F, we used CRISPR/Cas9 to knockout (KO) endogenous E/F. Our exogenously expressed N-FK-E/F has mutated PAM motifs and is resistant to KO. In our proof-of-concept study we used TCIP1 consisting of ortho-AP1867 (oAP), a synthetic ligand for FKBPF36V, linked to the BCL6 inhibitor BI3812 (BI) to rewire N-FK-E/F. We have also tested a negative control TCIP (TCIP NEG) that links oAP to a BI derivative that abolishes BCL6 binding. TCIP NEG has similar physiochemical properties to our active TCIP1; however, it cannot bind BCL6, serving as a negative control for ternary complex formation. TCIP1 rapidly and dose-dependently increases the RNA and protein expression of several BCL6 target genes, like p21, in multiple ES models that stably express N-FK-E/F. TCIP NEG does not increase the expression of BCL6 target genes in ES cells. TCIP1 induces ternary complex formation in ES cell lysates, and ternary complex formation is necessary for activity in ES cells. TCIP1 is specific and does not increase BCL6 target gene levels to the same extent in ES cells expressing a FKBP-GFP construct or in parental ES cells lacking N-FK-E/F. RNA sequencing of EWS502 N-FK-E/F expressing cells shows that TCIP1 treatment induces a larger increase in expression of BCL6 target gene RNA than BCL6 inhibition. Moreover, CUT&RUN experiments in EWS502 N-FK-E/F expressing cells suggest TCIP1 leads to an accumulation of N-FK-E/F at the promoters of BCL6 target genes. Motif analysis showed that TCIP1 increases the likelihood of N-FK-E/F binding to BCL6 consensus sequences as wells as increases the likelihood of BCL6 binding to E/F recognition sequences. In future studies we will conduct RNA sequencing, CUT&RUN, and other ‘omics’ approaches (e.g. DisP-seq) to compare TCIP1 to TCIP NEG in multiple cell lines at multiple concentrations and time points. Our data suggests that N-FK-E/F can be rewired to induce the expression of BCL6 target genes in ES. Since ES is driven solely by E/F, TCIPs may be promising next generation therapeutics. Our study provides a proof-of-concept that will be the foundation for the development of future TCIP molecules that recruit endogenous E/F once suitable ligands are developed. Regulating the Si/Al ratio of GIS zeolite with bulky primary particles for selective CO2 capture from hydrocarbons

Carbon dioxide (CO2) capture from hydrocarbons using low-energy adsorption separation techniques is a promising alternative to conventional low-temperature distillation, but limited by the shortness of low-cost and efficient physical adsorbent, especially for the direct acetylene (C2H2) purification because of their very similar size and physiochemical properties. In this work, GIS zeolites with tunable Si/Al ratio were synthesized in an unusual acid co-hydrolysis route to enable the formation of large-sized primary particles, which greatly reduce the outside surface adsorption to enhance the sieving effect of 8-membered ring microchannels. The obtained GIS zeolites afforded high CO2 uptake (3.5 mmol g-1 and 128 cm3 cm-3) while negligible adsorption towards other gases including C2H2, N2, CH4, C2H4, and C2H6, showing the remarkable selective CO2 adsorption from a CO2-C2H2(N2 or CH4) mixture with the CO2/C2H2 (50/50 v/v) selectivity up to 8.5 × 1010. Breakthrough experiments revealed the favorable dynamic separation behavior with better performance on the sample with the comparatively high Si/Al ratio of 3.1. The CO2 adsorption at 195 K and structural refinement results demonstrated that the excellent separation performance was attributed to the less Na+ ions inside the microchannels providing more inner space for the accommodation of guest molecules.

Sustainable lithium extraction enabled by responsive metal-organic frameworks with ion-sieving adsorption effects

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are superior ion adsorbents for selectively capturing toxic ions from water. Nevertheless, they have rarely been reported to have lithium selectivity over divalent cations due to the well-known flexibility of MOF framework and the similar physiochemical properties of Li+ and Mg2+. Herein, we report an ion-sieving adsorption approach to design sunlight-regenerable lithium adsorbents by subnanoporous MOFs for efficient lithium extraction. By integrating the ion-sieving agent of MOFs with light-responsive adsorption sites of polyspiropyran (PSP), the ion-sieving adsorption behaviors of PSP-MOFs with 6.0, 8.5, and 10.0 Å windows are inversely proportional to their pore size. The synthesized PSP-UiO-66 with a narrowest window size of 6.0 Å shows high LiCl adsorption capacity up to 10.17 mmol g-1 and good Li+/Mg2+ selectivity of 5.8 to 29 in synthetic brines with Mg/Li ratio of 1 to 0.1. It could be quickly regenerated by sunlight irradiation in 6 min with excellent cycling performance of 99% after five cycles. This work sheds light on designing selective adsorbents using responsive subnanoporous materials for environmentally friendly and energy-efficient ion separation and purification.

Temperature-dependent molecular sieving of fluorinated propane/propylene mixtures by a flexible-robust metal-organic framework.

The electronics industry necessitates highly selective adsorption separation of hexafluoropropylene (C3F6) from perfluoropropane (C3F8), which poses a challenge due to their similar physiochemical properties. In this work, we present a microporous flexible-robust metal-organic framework (Ca-tcpb) with thermoregulatory gate opening, a rare phenomenon that allows tunable sieving of C3F8/C3F6. Remarkably, the temperature-dependent adsorption behavior enhances the discrimination between the larger C3F8 and the smaller C3F6, resulting in unprecedented C3F6/C3F8 selectivity (over 10,000) compared to other well-known porous materials at an optimal temperature (298 K). Dynamic breakthrough experiments demonstrate that high-purity C3F8 (over 99.999%) could be obtained from a C3F6/C3F8 (10:90) mixture under ambient conditions. The unique attributes of this material encompass exceptional adsorption selectivity, remarkable structural stability, and outstanding separation performance, positioning it as a highly promising candidate for C3F6/C3F8 separation. Single-crystal structural analysis of C3F6-loaded Ca-tcpb and theoretical calculations elucidate the host-guest interaction via multiple intermolecular interactions.

Analysis of Methanol Content in Different Varieties of Traditionally Fermented Alcohol Found in Chandannath Municipality of Jumla District, Nepal

Background: Alcohol poisoning associated with traditionally fermented alcoholic beverages have been reported in Nepal with the constituents of these beverages not being quantified usually. In traditionally fermented alcoholic beverages, methanol, due to its cheaper cost and similar physiochemical properties with ethanol, is adulterated most commonly and readily. The objective of the present study was to quantify four different varieties of traditionally fermented alcoholic beverages available in Chandannath, Jumla for methanol level.Methods: The present study is a cross-sectional study in which four different types of traditionally fermented alcoholic beverages were collected from Chandannath, Jumla and they were analyzed for methanol content. From Chandannath municipality, the ward number two was selected for collection of samples. Further, from this ward, four different households regularly involved in brewing local alcohol were also randomly selected. These households belonged to three different ethnic groups (Indo-Aryan, Tibeto-Burman and Newar) and these samples were chhyang (sample- 1), local raksi (sample- 2), nigar (sample- 3) and local apple cider (sample- 4). In air tight containers, the samples were sealed and transported to Zest laboratory, Bhaktapur, Nepal for quantification of methanol using Gas Chromatography.Results: The residents in half of these four households belonged to the Tibeto-Burman ethnic groups. Methanol was detected in two samples among the four analyzed beverages. These samples, sample- 2 and sample- 4, on quantification showed the concentrations of 10.050ppm and 13.721ppm of methanol respectively. Conclusion: Among four samples of locally brewed alcoholic beverages, methanol was detected in two samples, but at a concentration below the level that would be considered toxic. This finding emphasizes the importance of conducting larger-scale quantification of traditionally fermented alcohol to mitigate the various health risks associated with its potential toxicity, as these beverages are currently not being quantified.

A process insight into production of ethyl levulinate via a stepwise fractionation

Ethyl levulinate (EL) is a key biomass-derived compounds due to its socio-economic benefits for the synthesis of commodity chemicals. Herein, we proposed an efficient one-step bamboo conversion to EL in ethanol, and a novel stepwise fractionation to purify EL and lignocellulose degradation products. A proton acid, due to its high catalytic efficiency, yielded 26.65 % EL in 120 min at 200 °C. The productions of ethyl glucoside and 5-ethoxymethylfurfural were analyzed in terms of by-products formation. To the best of our knowledge, there is no single report on catalyst for one step synthesis of EL directly from bamboo, as well as a stepwise fractionation to purify EL. Due to similar physiochemical properties in each fraction, the platform molecules could broaden a new paradigm of bamboo biomass utilization for renewable energy and value-added biochemicals. In addition, glucose, ethyl glucoside, corn starch, and microcrystalline cellulose were also investigated as substrates, so that the reaction intermediates of this one-pot procedure were identified and a possible reaction mechanism was proposed.

Ligand and structure based hierarchical virtual screening cascade for finding novel epidermal growth factor receptor inhibitors.

The epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) tyrosine kinase plays an important role in tumor formation and growth by mediating cell growth and other physiological processes. Therefore, EGFR is a promising target for the treatment of cancer. In this work, we combined ligand-based and structure-based virtual screening methods to identify novel EGFR inhibitors from a library of more than 103 thousand compounds. We first obtained hundreds of compounds with similar physiochemical properties through 3D molecular shape and electrostatic similarity screening with potent inhibitors AEE788 and Afatinib as queries. Next, we identified compounds with strong binding affinities to the EGFR pocket through molecular docking, which makes good use of the structure information of the receptor. After molecular scaffold analysis, our bioassay confirmed 13 compounds with EGFR inhibitory activity and three compounds had IC50 values below 1000 nM. In addition, we collected 5371 EGFR inhibitors from online databases, and clustered them into 7 groups by K-means method using their ECFP4 fingerprints as input. Each cluster had typical molecular fragments and corresponding activity characteristics, which could guide the design of EGFR inhibitors, and we concluded that the fragments from some of the hits are indicated in the highly active scaffolds.

Identification of rice melatonin receptor OsPMTR and its comparative in silico analysis with arabidopsis AtCAND2 receptor

Melatonin (N-acetyl-5-methoxytryptamine) is a signaling molecule having crucial role in plant growth, development and stress responses. Melatonin receptor has been identified in Arabidopsis, maize, tobacco and cassava. However no bona fide receptor has been identified in rice. Here we have identified a homolog of Arabidopsis melatonin receptor (AtCAND2/PMTR1) in rice OsPMTR. It is predicted to be a plasma membrane localized, seven transmembrane domain containing protein resembling G-protein coupled receptor. The comparative in silico analysis revealed that OsPMTR has similar gene structure and physiochemical properties as that of AtCAND2/PMTR1. Molecular docking analysis of OsPMTR and melatonin revealed pKi and ligand efficiency that were comparable to that of AtCAD2 which indicates strong possible interaction between OsPMTR and melatonin. To further elucidate melatonin signaling, we identified 24 potential interacting partners of OsPMTR using in silico protein-protein interaction, and also identified co-expression network of OsPMTR. OsRGA1, a known downstream signaling protein in G-protein mediated pathway, was identified as one of the interacting partners. We confirmed the interaction of OsPMTR with OsRGA1 through molecular docking. The quantitative expression analysis revealed that OsPMTR, two interacting partners (OsRGA1, OsCOLD1) and four co-expressed genes (OsTGA2.1, OsWRKY90, OsDREB6/OsERF60 and OsTCP5) were significantly induced by exogenous melatonin treatment in rice. This further suggests a potential role of OsPMTR interacting partners and coexpressed genes in OsPMTR signaling pathway. Our study shows that OsPMTR may act as a G-protein coupled receptor (GPCR) which activates the G-protein signaling through the downstream α subunit (OsRGA1) and may transcriptionally regulate many transcription factors and genes related to plant growth, development, biotic and abiotic stress tolerance. Our findings lay the foundation for the future experimental investigation in plant system to bring out the functional role of OsPMTR as a melatonin receptor and its signaling pathway in rice. This will further help develop cheap agonists and orthogonal receptors for management of abiotic stress tolerance and yield of crops. © 2017 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Energy, exergy, emission, exergoeconomic, enviroeconomic, and sustainability analysis of diesel engine, fueled by waste cooking oil and waste polyethylene co-pyrolysis oil-diesel blends

This study aims to evaluate the energy, exergy, emission, exergoeconomic, enviroeconomic, and sustainability aspects of a diesel engine utilizing blends of Diesel and co-pyrolysis oil. In this study, oil derived from co-pyrolysis of waste cooking oil and waste polyethylene was blended with Diesel up to 30% proportion. These blends exhibited similar physiochemical properties as regular diesel fuel. Among the blends, D90P10 (90% diesel and 10% co-pyrolysis oil by vol%) showed exceptional performance in terms of sustainability, with a sustainability index value of 1.43. Furthermore, the D90P10 blend achieved the highest energy efficiency at 33.6% and exergy efficiency at 30.3% compared to regular diesel fuel. However, it was noted that D90P10 also exhibited a maximum increase of 25.6% in NOX emissions at fuel injection timing of 25° bTDC. Overall, all the blends displayed improved efficiencies, higher sustainability index values, and lower relative costs compared to using neat diesel fuel with a penalty of higher cost of CO2. Among the tested blends, the D70P30 blend had the minimum cost of CO2, making it a promising and viable alternative to blend. In conclusion, the research suggests that the D70P30 (70% diesel and 30% co-pyrolysis oil by vol%) blend offers a compelling option to be utilized as a blended fuel with diesel, considering its favorable efficiency, sustainability, and cost factors.

Impact of physiochemical properties of protein ingredients on pellet quality and microstructure

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of different protein ingredients on the physical quality of extruded pellets. Five experimental diets were based on five formulations using fish meal (FM), poultry by-product meal (PBM), and three novel protein ingredients, yellow mealworm (YM), Clostridium ethanolic protein (CAP), and Chlorella variabilis (high protein strain, CV), mixed with wheat flour in a 7:3 ratio. The results showed that the CAP had the highest content of water absorption index and the lowest value of crude lipid. The pellets containing CAP had the lowest water solubility while having the highest expansion ratio. The CV had the highest values of crude lipid and pasting properties (peak viscosity and final viscosity). The feed containing CV had the highest hydration time. The PBM had the highest content of crude lipid and produced pellets with the lowest expansion ratio and floatability. The FM and YM had similar physiochemical properties and the qualities of pellets containing both were also similar. The extruded pellets produced with CAP had the highest pore area and porosity, while extruded pellets containing PBM had a smallest pore area and porosity. Furthermore, the pore area and porosity of extruded pellets containing CV were significantly lower than that of the CAP, FM, and YM groups, and had thicker pore wall structures (P < 0.05). Overall, the comprehensive physical quality score of the extruded pellets, feed containing CAP ranked first, followed by feed formulated with FM, YM, and CV, while PBM ranked last.

Pure Silica with Ordered Silanols for Propylene/Propane Adsorptive Separation Unraveled by Three-Dimensional Electron Diffraction.

Adsorptive separation of propylene (C3H6) from propane (C3H8), which could deal with energy-intensive cryogenic distillation technologies, remains challenging due to their similar physiochemical properties. Herein, we present a pure silica zeolite with ordered silanols (OSs), whose crystallographic structure was unraveled by the advanced three-dimensional electron diffraction (3D ED), displaying the highly efficient separation of propylene from propane under ambient conditions. The 3D ED technique enables us to investigate its 8-ring pore opening transformation from the round one to the elliptical one during the removal of organic structure-directing agents. Such unique elliptical 8-ring pore openings can exclude larger-size propane and only adsorb propylene. Its C3H6/C3H8 separation performance is also confirmed by column breakthrough experiments, showing a high dynamic adsorption capacity of 53.36 cm3 g-1 for C3H6 but negligible C3H8 under ambient conditions. The dynamic capacity for C3H6 is superior to that of the well-known pure silica DDR-type zeolite (31.07 cm3 g-1). The density functional theory calculation demonstrates that the adsorbed propylene is distributed in the heart-shaped cavity and has a weak interaction with the OSs.

An experimental study on the performance and emission characteristics of CI engines using bio-oil blends from Moringaoleifera

In the present research, a CI engine runs on waste moringaoleifera from drumstick seeds as a bio fuel, which replaces diesel by 25% and reduces the dependence on fossil fuels. Experimental analysis is done on the performance and emissions characteristics of a CI engine utilizing blends of Moringaoleifera bio-oil. Moringaoleifera seeds having higher oil content and calorific value. Moringaolifera leaves and pods are edible and have therapeutic and nutritional properties. This seed is obtained from early stages of drumstick which is small and spoiled ones and it is classified as non-edible and a potential source for replacement of diesel. This type of bio-oil has similar physiochemical properties of pure diesel. The result shows that B15 gives better brake thermal efficiency and B10 gives good volumetric efficiency during peak load condition. In comparison to pure diesel, the smoke density is almost eliminated and the NOx emission is decreased by 50% for B15 at maximum load. In order to replace fossil fuels, moringaoleifera bio-oil is directly combined with diesel up to 25%.

Chemiresistive Sensor Arrays for Gas/Volatile Organic Compounds Monitoring: A Review

Gas detection and monitoring are essential due to their direct impact on human health, environment, and ecosystem. Chemiresistive sensors are one of the most used classes of sensors for monitoring and measurement of gases thanks to their ease of fabrication, customizability, mechanical flexibility, and fast response time. While chemiresistive sensors can offer good sensitivity and selectivity to a particular gas in a controlled environment with known interferences, they may not be able to differentiate between various gases having similar physiochemical properties under uncontrolled conditions. To address this shortcoming of chemiresistive gas sensors, sensor arrays have been the subject of recent studies. Gas sensor arrays are a group of individual gas sensors that are arranged to simultaneously detect and differentiate multiple cross‐reactive gases. In this regard, various sensor array technologies have been developed to differentiate a given set of gases using multivariate algorithms. This review provides an insight into the different algorithms that are used to extract the data from the sensor arrays, highlighting the fabrication techniques used for developing the sensor array prototypes, and different applications in which these arrays are used.

Universal machine-learning algorithm for predicting adsorption performance of organic molecules based on limited data set: Importance of feature description

Adsorption of organic molecules from aqueous solution offers a simple and effective method for their removal. Recently, there have been several attempts to apply machine learning (ML) for this problem. To this end, polyparameter linear free energy relationships (pp-LFERs) were employed, and poor prediction results were observed outside model applicability domain of pp-LFERs. In this study, we improved the applicability of ML methods by adopting a chemical-structure (CS) based approach. We used the prediction of adsorption of organic molecules on carbon-based adsorbents as an example. Our results show that this approach can fully differentiate the structural differences between any organic molecules, while providing significant information that is relevant to their interaction with the adsorbents. We compared two CS feature descriptors: 3D-coordination and simplified molecular-input line-entry system (SMILES). We then built CS-ML models based on neural networks (NN) and extreme gradient boosting (XGB). They all outperformed pp-LFERs based models and are capable to accurately predict adsorption isotherm of isomers with similar physiochemical properties such as chiral molecules, even though they are trained with achiral molecules and racemates. We found for predicting adsorption isotherm, XGB shows better performance than NN, and 3D-coordinations allow effective differentiation between organic molecules.

Recyclable and reprintable biobased photopolymers for digital light processing 3D printing

Developing recyclable biobased photopolymers for UV-curable 3D printing is of great significance for sustainable development of 3D printing industry. In this work, novel recyclable and reprintable castor oil (CO)-based photopolymers for digital light processing (DLP) 3D printing were developed via hindered urea bonds, a type of dissociating dynamic covalent bonds. Remarkably, the printed objects could be recycled in 4 h at 90 °C or 2 h at 100 °C without any catalysts or solvents, and the recycled resins had similar physiochemical properties, polymerization kinetics, and printing resolutions as the original resin. Furthermore, reprintable sacrificial molds and thermochromic materials were achieved with the optimal biobased resin, which can be used in complicated model casting and information encryption/anti-counterfeiting areas. In particular, thermochromic microcapsules could be recycled nondestructively from the printed thermochromic materials and reused in DLP 3D printing.

Chitosan-based microneedle arrays for dermal delivery of Centella asiatica

Centella asiatica, a medicinal herb used for wound healing, has a limited effect when delivered as an ointment. Centella asiatica's active component asiatic acid (AA) increases extracellular matrix development and reduces inflammation but cannot penetrate the stratum corneum to access deeper skin layers. To bypass the stratum corneum, we formulated two types of AA-loaded microneedle arrays. We fabricated, characterised and optimised a dissolving array made from chitosan and PVA and a hydrogel array made from chitosan and PVP. Both needles were strong and long enough to pierce the epidermis without breaking. Both were biocompatible with keratinocytes and fibroblasts (>75% viability at 100% concentration) and showed a sustained drug release over 48 h. The hydrogel microneedle released more AA (52.2%) than the dissolving formulation (26.4%); thus, we evaluated them in an excisional rat model. The hydrogel microneedle arrays significantly increased the rate of wound closure compared to the control. This research has shown that the chitosan-PVA hydrogel microneedles could penetrate the epidermis, effectively release AA, and increase the wound closure rate. This AA-loaded delivery system shows promise as a natural treatment for wound healing and may be applied to other bioactive compounds with similar physiochemical properties in the future.
