Context. Leo T (MV = −8.0) is a peculiar dwarf galaxy that stands out for being both the faintest and the least massive galaxy known to contain neutral gas and to display signs of recent star formation. It is also extremely dark-matter dominated. As a result, Leo T presents an invaluable opportunity to study the processes of gas and star formation at the limit where galaxies are found to have rejuvenating episodes of star formation. Aims. Our approach to studying Leo T involves analysing photometry and stellar spectra to identify member stars and gather information about their properties, such as line-of-sight velocities, stellar metallicities, and ages. By examining these characteristics, we aim to better understand the overall dynamics and stellar content of the galaxy and to compare the properties of its young and old stars. Methods. Our study of Leo T relies on data from the Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) on the Very Large Telescope, which we use to identify 58 member stars of the galaxy. In addition, we supplement this information with spectroscopic data from the literature to bring the total number of member stars analysed to 75. To further our analysis, we complement these data with Hubble Space Telescope (HST) photometry. With these combined datasets, we delve deeper into the galaxy’s stellar content and uncover new insights into its properties. Results. Our analysis reveals two distinct populations of stars in Leo T. The first population, with an age of ≲500 Myr, includes three emission-line Be stars comprising 15% of the total number of young stars. The second population of stars is much older, with ages ranging from > 5 Gyr to as high as 10 Gyr. We combine MUSE data with literature data to obtain an overall velocity dispersion of σv = 7.07−1.12+1.29 km s−1 for Leo T. When we divide the sample of stars into young and old populations, we find that they have distinct kinematics. Specifically, the young population has a velocity dispersion of 2.31−1.65+2.68 km s−1, contrasting with that of the old population, of 8.14−1.38+1.66 km s−1. The fact that the kinematics of the cold neutral gas is in good agreement with the kinematics of the young population suggests that the recent star formation in Leo T is linked with the cold neutral gas. We assess the existence of extended emission-line regions and find none to a surface brightness limit of < 1 × 10−20 erg s−1 cm−2 arcsec−2 which corresponds to an upper limit on star formation of ∼10−11 M⊙ yr−1 pc−2, implying that the star formation in Leo T has ended.

The supermassive black hole coincident with the luminous transient ASASSN-15lh

The progenitors of astronomical transients are linked to a specific stellar population and galactic environment, and observing their host galaxies hence constrains the physical nature of the transient itself. Here, we use imaging from the Hubble Space Telescope, and spatially resolved, medium-resolution spectroscopy from the Very Large Telescope obtained with X-shooter and MUSE to study the host of the very luminous transient ASASSN-15lh. The dominant stellar population at the transient site is old (around 1 to 2 Gyr) without signs of recent star formation. We also detect emission from ionized gas, originating from three different, time invariable, narrow components of collisionally excited metal and Balmer lines. The ratios of emission lines in the Baldwin-Phillips-Terlevich diagnostic diagram indicate that the ionization source is a weak active galactic nucleus with a black hole mass of M• = 5-3+8 × 108 M⊙, derived through the M•-σ relation. The narrow line components show spatial and velocity offsets on scales of 1 kpc and 500 km s-1, respectively; these offsets are best explained by gas kinematics in the narrow-line region. The location of the central component, which we argue is also the position of the supermassive black hole, aligns with that of the transient within an uncertainty of 170 pc. Using this positional coincidence as well as other similarities with the hosts of tidal disruption events, we strengthen the argument that the transient emission observed as ASASSN-15lh is related to the disruption of a star around a supermassive black hole, most probably spinning with a Kerr parameter a• ≳ 0.5.

Spectral detection of multiple stellar populations in z ∼ 1 early-type galaxies

We present a spectroscopic analysis based on measurements of two mainly age-dependent spectrophotometric indices in the 4000A rest frame region, i.e. H+K(CaII) and Delta4000, for a sample of 15 early-type galaxies (ETGs) at 0.7 < z_{spec} < 1.1, morphologically selected in the GOODS-South field. Ages derived from the two different indices by means of the comparison with stellar population synthesis models, are not consistent with each other for at least nine galaxies (60 per cent of the sample), while for the remaining six galaxies, the ages derived from their global spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting are not consistent with those derived from the two indices. We then hypothesized that the stellar content of many galaxies is made of two stellar components with different ages. The double-component analysis, performed by taking into account both the index values and the observed SED, fully explains the observational data and improves the results of the standard one-component SED fitting in 9 out of the 15 objects, i.e. those for which the two indices point towards two different ages. In all of them, the bulk of the mass belongs to rather evolved stars, while a small mass fraction is many Gyr younger. In some cases, thanks to the sensitivity of the H+K(CaII) index, we find that the minor younger component reveals signs of recent star formation. The distribution of the ages of the younger stellar components appears uniformly in time and this suggests that small amounts of star formation could be common during the evolution of high-z ETGs. We argue the possibility that these new star formation episodes could be frequently triggered by internal causes due to the presence of small gas reservoir.

A WFC3 study of globular clusters in NGC 4150: an early-type minor merger

Abstract We combine near-ultraviolet (NUV; 2250 Å) and optical (U, B, V, I) imaging from the Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3), on-board the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), to study the globular cluster (GC) population in NGC 4150, a sub-L* (MB∼−18.48 mag) early-type minor-merger remnant in the Coma I cloud. We use broad-band NUV—optical photometry from the WFC3 to estimate individual ages, metallicities, masses and line-of-sight extinctions [E(B−V)] for 63 bright (MV &amp;lt; −5 mag) GCs in this galaxy. In addition to a small GC population with ages greater than 10 Gyr, we find a dominant population of clusters with ages centred around 6 Gyr, consistent with the expected peak of stellar mass assembly in faint early types residing in low-density environments. The old and intermediate-age GCs in NGC 4150 are metal poor, with metallicities less than 0.1 Z⊙, and reside in regions of low extinction [E(B−V) &amp;lt; 0.05 mag]. We also find a population of young, metal-rich (Z &amp;gt; 0.3 Z⊙) clusters that have formed within the last Gyr and reside in relatively dusty [E(B−V) &amp;gt; 0.3 mag] regions that are coincident with the part of the galaxy core that hosts significant recent star formation. Cluster disruption models (in which ∼80–90 per cent of objects younger than a few ×108 yr dissolve every dex in time) suggest that the bulk of these young clusters are a transient population.

Discovery of a spiral-host episodic radio galaxy

Abstract We report the discovery of a unique radio galaxy at z= 0.137, which could possibly be the second spiral-host large radio galaxy and also the second triple—double episodic radio galaxy. The host galaxy shows signs of recent star formation in the ultraviolet but is optically red and is the brightest galaxy of a possible cluster. The outer relic radio lobes of this galaxy, separated by ∼1 Mpc, show evidence of spectral flattening and a high fraction of linear polarization. We interpret that these relic lobes have experienced re-acceleration of particles and compression of the magnetic field due to shocks in the cluster outskirts. From the morphology of the relics and galaxy distribution, we argue that re-acceleration is unlikely to be due to a cluster—cluster merger and speculate about the possibility of accretion shocks. The source was identified from Sloan Digital Sky Survey, Galaxy Evolution Explorer, NRAO VLA Sky Survey and Faint Images of the Radio Sky at Twenty-Centimetres survey data, but we also present follow-up optical observations with the Lulin telescope and 325-MHz low-frequency radio observations with the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope. We briefly discuss the scientific potential of this example in understanding the evolution of galaxies and clusters by accretion, mergers, star formation and active galactic nucleus feedback.

Galaxy Zoo: a correlation between the coherence of galaxy spin chirality and star formation efficiency★

We report on the finding of a correlation between the past star formation activity of galaxies and the degree to which the rotation axes of neighbouring galaxies are aligned. This is obtained by cross-correlating star formation histories, derived using the multiple optimized parameter estimation and data compression (MOPED) algorithm, and the spatial coherence of spin direction (chirality), as determined by the Galaxy Zoo project, for a sample of Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) galaxies. Our findings suggest that spiral galaxies, which formed the majority of their stars early (z > 2), tend to display coherent rotation over scales of ∼10 Mpc h−1. The correlation is weaker for galaxies with significant recent star formation. We find evidence for this alignment at more than the 5σ level, but no correlation with other galaxy stellar properties. This finding can be explained within the context of hierarchical tidal-torque theory if the SDSS galaxies harbouring the majority of the old stellar population were formed in the past, in the same filament and at about the same time. Galaxies with significant recent star formation instead are in the field, thus influenced by the general tidal field that will align them in random directions, or have had a recent merger that would promote star formation but change the spin direction.

SN 2006bt: A PERPLEXING, TROUBLESOME, AND POSSIBLY MISLEADING TYPE Ia SUPERNOVA

SN 2006bt displays characteristics unlike those of any other known Type Ia supernova (SN Ia). We present optical light curves and spectra of SN 2006bt which demonstrate the peculiar nature of this object. SN 2006bt has broad, slowly declining light curves indicative of a hot, high-luminosity SN, but lacks a prominent second maximum in the i band as do low-luminosity SNe Ia. Its spectra are similar to those of low-luminosity SNe Ia, containing features that are only present in cool SN photospheres. Light-curve fitting methods suggest that SN 2006bt is reddened by a significant amount of dust; however, it occurred in the outskirts of its early-type host galaxy and has no strong Na D absorption in any of its spectra, suggesting a negligible amount of host-galaxy dust absorption. C II is possibly detected in our pre-maximum spectra, but at a much lower velocity than other elements. The progenitor was likely very old, being a member of the halo population of a galaxy that shows no signs of recent star formation. SNe Ia have been very successfully modeled as a one-parameter family, and this is fundamental to their use as cosmological distance indicators. SN 2006bt is a challenge to that picture, yet its relatively normal light curves allowed SN 2006bt to be included in cosmological analyses. We generate mock SN Ia datasets which indicate that contamination by similar objects will both increase the scatter of a SN Ia Hubble diagram and systematically bias measurements of cosmological parameters. However, spectra and rest-frame i-band light curves should provide a definitive way to identify and eliminate such objects.

The SAURON project - XIII. SAURON-GALEX study of early-type galaxies: the ultraviolet colour-magnitude relations and Fundamental Planes

We present GALEX far (FUV) and near (NUV) ultraviolet imaging of 34 nearby early-type galaxies from the SAURON representative sample of 48 E/S0 galaxies, all of which have ground-based optical imaging from the MDM Observatory. The surface brightness profiles of nine galaxies show regions with blue UV-optical colours suggesting recent star formation. Five of these show blue integrated UV-optical colours that set them aside in the NUV integrated colour-magnitude relation. They also have other properties confirming they have had recent star formation, in particular H_beta absorption higher than expected for a quiescent population and a higher CO detection rate. NUV-blue galaxies are generally drawn from the lower stellar velocity dispersion and thus lower dynamical mass part of the sample. We have also constructed the first UV Fundamental Planes and show that NUV blue galaxies bias the slopes and increase the scatters. If they are eliminated the fits get closer to expectations from the virial theorem. Although our analysis is based on a limited sample, it seems that a dominant fraction of the tilt and scatter of the UV Fundamental Planes is due to the presence of young stars in preferentially low-mass early-type galaxies. Interestingly, the UV-optical radial colour profiles reveal a variety of behaviours, with many galaxies showing signs of recent star formation, a central UV-upturn phenomenon, smooth but large-scale age and metallicity gradients, and in many cases a combination of these. In addition, FUV-NUV and FUV-V colours even bluer than those normally associated with UV-upturn galaxies are observed at the centre of some quiescent galaxies. Four out of the five UV-upturn galaxies are slow rotators. These objects should thus pose interesting challenges to stellar evolutionary models of the UV-upturn.

AEGIS: THE NATURE OF THE HOST GALAXIES OF LOW-IONIZATION OUTFLOWS ATz&lt; 0.6

We report on a S/N-limited search for low-ionization gas outflows in the spectra of the 0.11 < z < 0.54 objects in the EGS portion of the DEEP2 survey. Doppler shifts from the host galaxy redshifts are systematically searched for in the Na I 5890,96 doublet (Na D). Although the spectral resolution and S/N limit us to study the interstellar gas kinematics from fitting a single doublet component to each observed Na D profile, the typical outflow often seen in local luminous-infrared galaxies (LIRGs) should be detected at >~ 6 sigma in absorption equivalent width down to the survey limiting S/N (~ 5 per pixel) in the continuum around Na D. The detection rate of LIRG-like outflow clearly shows an increasing trend with star-forming activity and infrared luminosity. However, by virtue of not selecting our sample on star formation, we also find a majority of outflows in galaxies on the red sequence in the rest-frame (U-B, M_B) color-magnitude diagram. Most of these red-sequence outflows are of early-type morphology and show the sign of recent star formation in their UV-optical colors; some show enhanced Balmer H-beta absorption lines indicative of poststarburst as well as high dust extinction. These findings demonstrate that outflows outlive starbursts and suggest that galactic-scale outflows play a role in quenching star formation in the host galaxies on their way to the red sequence. The fate of relic winds, as well as the observational constraints on gaseous feedback models, may be studied in galaxies during their poststarburst phase. We also note the presence of inflow candidates in red, early-type galaxies, some with signs of AGNs/LINERs but little evidence for star formation.

The Fundamental Planes of E+A galaxies and GALEX UV-excess early-type galaxies: revealing their intimate connection

Strong Balmer absorption lines and the lack of Hα and [O ii] emission lines signify that E+A galaxies are post-starburst systems. Recent studies suggest that E+As may undergo the transition from the ‘blue cloud’ to the ‘red sequence’ and eventually migrate to red-sequence early-type galaxies. An observational validation of this scenario is to identify the intervening galaxy population between E+As and the red sequence. Motivated by recent findings with Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) that an unexpectedly large fraction of early-type galaxies exhibit ultraviolet (UV) excess (i.e. blue UV – optical colours) as a sign of recent star formation (RSF), we investigate the possible connection of the UV-excess galaxies to E+As. In particular, we examine the Fundamental Plane (FP) scaling relations of the currently largest sample of ∼1000 E+As selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and ∼20 000 morphologically selected SDSS early-type galaxies with GALEX UV data. The FP parameters, combined with stellar population indicators, reveal a certain group of UV-excess early types that bridge between E+As and quiescent red galaxies. The newly identified galaxies are the post-starburst systems characterized by UV-excess but no Hα emission. This is essentially a conceptual generalization of ‘E+A’, in that the Balmer absorption line in the ‘E+A’ definition is replaced with UV – optical colours that are far more sensitive to RSF than the Balmer lines. We refer to these UV-excess galaxies as ‘E+a’ galaxies (named after ‘E+A’), which stand for elliptical (‘E’) galaxies with a minority of A-type (‘a’) young stars. The species are either (1) galaxies that experienced starbursts weaker than those observed in E+As (1 ∼ 10 per cent of E+As, ‘mild E+As’) or (2) the products of passively evolved E+As after quenching star formation quite a while ago (∼1 Gyr, ‘old E+As’). We suggest that the latter type of E+a galaxies (i.e. old ‘E+As’) represents the most recent arrival to the red sequence in the final phase of the E+A to red early-type transition.

GALEX Ultraviolet Photometry of Globular Clusters in M31: Three‐Year Results and a Catalog

We present ultraviolet (UV) photometry of M31 globular clusters (GCs) found in 23 Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) images covering the entirety of M31. We detect 485 and 273 GCs (and GC candidates) in the near-ultraviolet (NUV; 2267 A) and far-ultraviolet (FUV; 1516 A), respectively. Comparing M31 data with those of Galactic GCs in the UV with the aid of population models, we find that the age ranges of old GCs in M31 and the Galactic halo are similar. Three metal-rich ([Fe/H]>-1) GCs in M31 produce significant FUV flux making their FUV-V colors unusually blue for their metallicities. These are thought to be analogs of the two peculiar Galactic GCs NGC 6388 and NGC 6441 with extended blue HB stars. Based on the models incorporating helium enriched subpopulations in addition to the majority of the population that have a normal helium abundance, we suggest that even small fraction of super-helium-rich subpopulations in GCs can reproduce the observed UV bright metal-rich GCs. Young clusters in M31 show distinct UV and optical properties from GCs in Milky Way. Population models indicate that their typical age is less than ~ 2 Gyrs. A large fraction of young GCs have the kinematics of the thin, rapidly rotating disk component. However, a subset of the old GCs also shares the thin-disk kinematics of the younger clusters. The existence of young GCs on the outskirts of M31 disk suggests the occurrence of a significant recent star formation in the thin-disk of M31. Old thin-disk GCs may set constraints on the epoch of early formation of the M31 thin-disk. We detect 12 (10) intermediate-age GC candidates in NUV (FUV). We suggest that some of spectroscopically identified intermediate-age GCs may not be truly intermediate in age, but rather older GCs that possess developed HB.

Gravitational Stability of Circumnuclear Disks in Elliptical Galaxies

A significant fraction of nearby elliptical galaxies are known to have high-density gas disks in their circumnuclear (CN) region (0.1 to a few kpc). Yet ellipticals, especially luminous ones, show little sign of recent star formation. To investigate the possible cause of the dearth of star formation in these systems, we study the gravitational stability of CN gas disks embedded within the gravitational potentials of both the stellar bulge component and the central massive black hole (BH) in elliptical galaxies. We find that CN disks in higher mass galaxies are generally more stable than those in lower mass galaxies, because higher mass galaxies tend to have more massive BHs and more centrally concentrated stellar density profiles. We also consider the case in which the central stellar density profile has a core, which is often observed for ellipticals whose total stellar mass is higher than about 1011 M☉. Such a cored stellar density profile leads to more unstable CN disks than the power-law stellar density profile characteristic of less massive galaxies. However, the more massive BHs in high-mass galaxies act to stabilize the CN disk. Our results demonstrate that the gravitational potentials of both the central BH and the stellar component should be taken into account when studying the properties of CN disks, as their stability is sensitive to both the BH mass and the stellar density profile. Our results could explain the observed trend that less luminous elliptical galaxies have a greater tendency to exhibit ongoing star formation than giant ellipticals.

Star formation in bulges from GALEX

AbstractEarly-type galaxies, considered as large bulges, have been found to have had a much-more-than-boring star formation history in recent years by the UV satellite GALEX. The most massive bulges, brightest cluster galaxies, appear to be relatively free of young stars. But smaller bulges, normal ellipticals and lenticulars, often show unambiguous sign of recent star formation in their UV flux. The fraction of such UV-bright bulges in the volume-limited sample climbs up to the staggering 30%. The bulges of spirals follow similar trends but a larger fraction showing signs of current and recent star formation. The implication on the bulge formation and evolution is discussed.

Galaxy pairs in cosmological simulations: effects of interactions on colours and chemical abundances

We perform a statistical analysis of galaxies in pairs with a A-CDM scenario by using the chemical GADGET-2 of Scannapieco et al. (2005, MNRAS, 364, 552) in order to study the effects of galaxy interactions on colours and metallicities. We find that galaxy-galaxy interactions can produce a bimodal colour distribution where galaxies with significant recent star formation activity contribute mainly to blue colours. In the simulations, the colours and the fractions of recently formed stars of galaxies in pairs depend on their environments more strongly than those of galaxies without close companions, suggesting that interactions play an important role in galaxy evolution. If the metallicity of the stellar populations is used as the chemical indicator, we find that the simulated galaxies determine luminosity-metallicity and stellar mass-metallicity relations that do not depend on the presence of a close companion. However, in the case of the luminosity-metallicity relation, at a given level of enrichment, we detect a systematic displacement of the relation to brighter magnitudes for active star forming systems. Regardless of relative distance and current level of star formation (SF) activity, galaxies in pairs have stellar populations with higher level of enrichment than galaxies without a close companion. In the case of the gas component, this is no longer valid for galaxies in pairs with passive star formation that only show an excess of metals for very close pair members, consequence of an important recent past star-formation activity. In agreement with observations, the signature of gas inflows driven by interactions can be also detected in the lower mean O/H abundances measured in the central regions of galaxies in pairs. Our results suggest that interactions play a significant role in the determination of colour and chemical properties of galaxies in hierarchical clustering scenarios, although SN energy feedback is needed to achieve a full agreement.

The Effect of Environment on the Ultraviolet Color‐Magnitude Relation of Early‐Type Galaxies

We use \textit{GALEX} (Galaxy Evolution Explorer) near-UV (NUV) photometry of a sample of early-type galaxies selected in \textit{SDSS} (Sloan Digital Sky Survey) to study the UV color-magnitude relation (CMR). $NUV-r$ color is an excellent tracer of even small amounts ($\sim 1$% mass fraction) of recent ($\la 1$ Gyr) star formation and so the $NUV-r$ CMR allows us to study the effect of environment on the recent star formation history. We analyze a volume-limited sample of 839 visually-inspected early-type galaxies in the redshift range $0.05 < z < 0.10$ brighter than $M_{r}$ of -21.5 with any possible emission-line or radio-selected AGN removed to avoid contamination. We find that contamination by AGN candidates and late-type interlopers highly bias any study of recent star formation in early-type galaxies and that, after removing those, our lower limit to the fraction of massive early-type galaxies showing signs of recent star formation is roughly $30 \pm 3%$ This suggests that residual star formation is common even amongst the present day early-type galaxy population. We find that the fraction of UV-bright early-type galaxies is 25% higher in low-density environments. However, the density effect is clear only in the lowest density bin. The blue galaxy fraction for the subsample of the brightest early-type galaxies however shows a very strong density dependence, in the sense that the blue galaxy fraction is lower in a higher density region.

Massive Young Clusters in the Disk of M31

We have studied the properties of a sample of 67 very blue and likely young massive clusters in M31 extracted from the Bologna Revised Catalog of globular clusters, selected according to their color [(B - V)0 ≤ 0.45] and/or the strength of their Hβ spectral index (Hβ ≥ 3.5 A). Their existence in M31 has been noted by several authors in the past; we show here that these blue luminous compact clusters (BLCCs) are a significant fraction (15%) of the whole globular cluster system of M31. Compared to the global properties of the M31 globular cluster system, they appear to be intrinsically fainter and morphologically less concentrated, with a shallower Balmer jump and enhanced Hβ absorption in their spectra. Empirical comparison with integrated properties of clusters with known ages, as well as with theoretical simple stellar population models, consistently indicates that their typical age is less than ~2 Gyr, so they are probably not as metal-poor as would be deduced if they were older. When selecting BLCCs by either their (B - V)0 colors or the strength of their Hβ index, the cluster sample turns out to be distributed on the outskirts of the M31 disk, sharing the kinematic properties of the thin, rapidly rotating disk component. If confirmed to be young and not metal-poor, these clusters indicate the occurrence of significant recent star formation in the thin disk of M31, although they do not set constraints on the epoch of its early formation.

Ongoing Mass Transfer in the Interacting Galaxy Pair NGC 1409/1410

I present two-band HST STIS imaging, and WIYN spectral mapping, of ongoing mass transfer in the interacting galaxy pair NGC 1409/10 (where NGC 1410 is the Seyfert galaxy also catalogued as III Zw 55). Archival snapshot WFPC2 imaging from the survey by Malkan et al. showed a dust feature stretching between the galaxies, apparently being captured by NGC 1409. The new images allow estimates of the mass being transferred and rate of transfer. An absorption lane typically 0.25" (100 pc) wide with a representative optical depth tau_B = 0.2 cuts across the spiral structure of NGC 1410, crosses the 7-kpc projected space between the nuclei, wraps in front of and, at the limits of detection, behind NGC 1409, and becomes a denser (tau_B = 0.4) polar feature around the core of NGC 1409. Combination of extinction data in two passbands allows a crude three-dimensional recovery of the dust structure, supporting the front/back geometry derived from colors and extinction estimates. The whole feature contains of order $10^6$ solar masses in dust, implying about 2x10^7 solar masses of gas, requiring a mass transfer rate averaging ~1 solar mass per year unless we are particularly unlucky in viewing angle. Curiously, this demonstrable case of mass transfer seems to be independent of the occurrence of a Seyfert nucleus, since the Seyfert galaxy in this pair is the donor of the material. Likewise, the recipient shows no signs of recent star formation from incoming gas, although NGC 1410 has numerous luminous young star clusters and widespread H-alpha emission.

Stellar populations in NGC 5128 with the VLT: Evidence for recent star formation

We resolve stars of the nearest giant elliptical galaxy NGC 5128 using VLT with FORS1 and ISAAC. We construct deep U, V and Ks color-magnitude and color-color diagrams in two different halo fields (in the halo and in the north-eastern diffuse shell). In the outer, shell field, at ~14 kpc from the center of the galaxy, there is a significant recent star formation with stars as young as 10 Myr, approximately aligned with the prominent radio and x-ray jet from the nucleus of the host AGN. Ionized gas filaments are evident in ultraviolet images near the area where neutral HI and CO molecular gas was previously observed. The underlying stellar population of the halo of the giant elliptical is predominantly old with a very broad metallicity distribution. The presence of an extended giant branch reaching M_bol=-5 mag suggests the existence of a significant intermediate-age AGB population in the halo of this galaxy.

Caltech Faint Galaxy Redshift Survey. XIII. Spectral Energy Distributions for Galaxies in the Region of the Hubble Deep Field North*

We introduce a new empirical function for modeling the spectral energy distributions of galaxies. We apply it to a sample of 590 galaxies in the region of the HDF with $z < 1.5$ using multi-color photometry with wide wavelength coverage combined with spectroscopic redshifts from our 93% complete R-selected redshift survey there. We find the following: As expected, galaxies with strong signs of recent star formation (i.e. those which show emission lines) have bluer continua in both the rest frame UV and the optical/near-infrared. The redder galaxies tend to be more luminous. The SEDs of actively star forming galaxies become bluer in the mean in the rest-frame UV at higher redshift, which trend might arise from SED modeling errors. Aside from this, we discern no change with redshift in the relationship between SED characteristics and galaxy spectral type based on the strength of narrow emission and absorption features. There is no evidence in our R-selected sample that supports the existence of a substantial population of very dusty star forming galaxies at z < 1.5. The overall pattern of the L(K) - z relationship suggests that passive evolution at constant stellar mass is a good approximation to the actual behavior of at least the most luminous galaxies in this large sample of galaxies in the region of the HDF out to z \sim 1.5. The Tully-Fisher Relation as a Measure of Luminosity Evolution: A Low-Redshift Baseline for Evolving Galaxies

We use optical rotation curves to investigate the R-band Tully-Fisher properties of a sample of 90 spiral galaxies in close pairs, covering a range of luminosities, morphological types, and degrees of tidal distortion. The galaxies follow the Tully-Fisher relation remarkably well, with the exception of eight distinct ~3 σ outliers. Although most of the outliers show signs of recent star formation, gasdynamical effects are probably the dominant cause of their anomalous Tully-Fisher properties. Four outliers with small emission-line widths have very centrally concentrated line emission and truncated rotation curves; the central emission indicates recent gas infall after a close galaxy-galaxy pass. These four galaxies may be local counterparts to compact, blue galaxies at intermediate redshift. The remaining galaxies have a negligible offset from the reference Tully-Fisher relation, but a shallower slope (2.6 σ significance) and a 25% larger scatter. We argue that triggered star formation is a significant contributor to the slope difference. We characterize the nonoutlier sample with measures of distortion and star formation to search for third-parameter dependence in the residuals of the TF relation. Severe kinematic distortion is the only significant predictor of TF residuals; this distortion is not, however, responsible for the slope difference from the reference distribution. Because the outliers are easily removed by sigma clipping, we conclude that even in the presence of some tidal distortion, detection of moderate (0.5 mag in rest-frame R) luminosity evolution should be possible with high-redshift samples the size of this 90-galaxy study. The slope of the TF relation, although difficult to measure, is as fundamental for quantifying luminosity evolution as the zero-point offset.
