Post-traumatic stress disorder among long-term resettled Syrian refugees in Turkey: a comprehensive analysis of pre- and post-migratory factors.

After the war in Syria, many people were forcibly displaced, and many others migrated to foreign countries. Many Syrians have been exposed to traumatic negative lifeexperiences during this process. In this context, this study was carried out to investigate the effects of pre- and post-migration traumatic experiences and living difficulties on the development of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in Syrian refugees who have been residing in Turkey for more than five years. The sample size of this cross-sectional study consisted of 200 Syrian refugees. Research data were collected using a self-report questionnaire. Refugees' depression and anxiety levels were assessed with The Hopkins Symptom Checklist-25 (HSCL-25), and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms were assessed with the PTSD Checklist for the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5) (PCL-5). Logistic regression models were created to assess the effects of pre- and post-migration traumas, adverse events, and other sociodemographic variables, including age and gender, on PTSD. The study unveiled a high prevalence of PTSD (55.5%), depression (33.5%), and anxiety(4.5%) among participants. Notably, male refugees and those exposed to armed conflict exhibited a significantly higher frequency of PTSD. In contrast, depression was more prevalent among female participants. Pre-migration traumatic experiences, especially near-death situations, were identified as significant predictors of PTSD. Interestingly, while pre-migration traumatic experiences were higher, post-migration living difficulties also emerged as a concern, with factorslike "inability to return home in emergencies" and "worries about losing ethnic identity" beinghighlighted. Path analysis further revealed that pre-migration traumatic experiences indirectly contributed to PTSD by exacerbating post-migration living difficulties. Syrian refugees in Turkey, even after long-term residence, exhibit high rates of PTSD, depression, and anxiety. While pre-migration traumas play a pivotal role, post-migration challenges further compound their mental health issues. These findings underscore the need for holistic, long-term mental health interventions that address both past traumas and current living difficulties.

PTSD of Chinese nurses in the normalisation of COVID-19 pandemic prevention and control: Prevalence and correlates.

Though the severe prevention and control measures faced by Chinese nurses had changed during the normalisation stage of the coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, they still worked under great stress. Due to a lack of related evidence, we aimed to investigate the prevalence and correlates of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among Chinese nurses during the normalisation of COVID-19 pandemic prevention and control measures. Using convenience sampling, we recruited 784 nurses in Jiangsu province, China to complete a survey via their mobile devices. We used a demographic questionnaire, the Perceived Social Support Scale, the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale, the General Self-Efficacy Scale, and The Impact of Event Scale-Revised to collect data and applied binary logistic regression analysis to identify factors associated with PTSD. The prevalence of PTSD was 26.4%. Married nurses were less likely to experience PTSD than unmarried ones (odds ratio (OR) = 0.573; 95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.33-0.99, P = 0.046). Social support (OR = 0.96; 95% CI = 0.94-0.98, P = 0.000) and resilience (OR = 0.98; 95% CI = 0.97-0.99, P = 0.004) were significant predictors of PTSD. PTSD remained prevalent among Chinese nurses as COVID-19 pandemic prevention and control measures became normalised, with an incidence rate of 26.4%. Resilience, social support, and marital status were factors associated with PTSD. Chinese hospital management must intervene to improve resilience and social support for nurses to reduce symptoms of PTSD.

0645 Prevalence of sleep disorders and their association with posttraumatic stress and anxiety symptoms among college students

Abstract Introduction Incidence of diagnosed psychiatric disorders tend to peak during early adulthood. Furthermore, sleep complaints are highly prevalent among college students, and often exacerbate psychiatric disorders. This study aimed to explore the prevalence of sleep disorders, and their association with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) symptoms among college students. Methods College students completed self-report measures as part of a larger study (n=56; mean age 20.23 (SD=1.5); 83.9% females). The SLEEP-50 questionnaire estimated the prevalence of sleep disorders. Each sleep disorder required a cutoff score and at least one sleep complaint, with a minimum score of three or four used to classify a sleep complaint. The GAD-7 scale assessed for generalized anxiety disorder symptoms, and the PCL-5 determined PTSD symptomatology. Linear regression models identified the association between each sleep disorder on posttraumatic stress and generalized anxiety symptoms. Results Approximately 19.6% of students were at risk for at least one sleep disorder. The most frequent sleep disorder was hypersomnia (69.5%), followed by narcolepsy (53.6%), insomnia (48.2%), affective disorder (28.6%), and restless leg syndrome (21.4%). In contrast, circadian rhythm disorder (16.1%) and sleep apnea (7.1%) were infrequently reported. Linear regression models indicated that affective disorder (t=2.83, p<.007; t=3.13, p<.003) and hypersomnia disorder (t=2.31, p=.025; t=2.39, p=.020) significantly predicted PTSD and GAD symptoms respectively. Additionally, insomnia (t=3.97, p<.001) and restless leg syndrome (t=2.34, p=.023) were significant predictors for GAD only, and circadian rhythm disorder (t=2.760, p=.008) was a significant predictor for PTSD only. Conclusion Results suggest that risk of sleep disorders was significantly associated with PTSD and GAD symptoms in college students. Given these findings, health promotion programs are needed to promote good sleep hygiene and early interventions for mental health during college years. The virtue of religious faith and its relationship to posttraumatic stress disorder in victims of torture: the unique outcomes of men and women

ABSTRACT Three aspects of religious faith: faith-as-faithfulness; faith-as-trust; and faith-as-experience were examined in the lives of torture survivors with Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). The Fetzer Scale items: Positive and Negative Religious Coping (PRC & NRC), Religious Practices (RP), and Daily Spiritual Experiences (DSE) were applied to a sample of 111 asylees. While none of the correlational hypotheses from the total sample showed a significant association between the variables of PRC, RP, and DSE to PTSD, a post hoc gender analyses revealed significant posttraumatic responses between women and men. Men showed a positive and significant association between PTSD, PRC and NRC, and women, a significant, negative association between Religious Social Support and PTSD. A multiple regression analysis investigated whether NRC, RP and DSE would predict significant variance with PTSD. Only NRC was shown to be a unique, significant predictor of PTSD above and beyond any beneficial effects of Religious Social Support (RSS).

Personality traits and risk of posttraumatic stress disorder among dental residents during COVID-19 crisis.

Purpose/objectivesThe coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID‐19) pandemic has presented mental health challenges among healthcare professionals, including posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Few studies have examined PTSD predictors in dental settings. This cross‐sectional study aimed to describe the relationship between personality traits and PTSD symptoms among US dental residents engaged in patient care during the pandemic.MethodsAn online survey was administered to residents in advanced education in general dentistry, dental anesthesia, general practice residency, oral and maxillofacial surgery, and pediatric dentistry programs between September 2020 and April 2021. The survey included a sociodemographic questionnaire, the Big Five Inventory, and the PTSD Checklist for Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition. Logistic regression models, analysis of variance, and Tukey tests were used to examine the association between variables and PTSD scores and assess differences in personality traits and PTSD by specialty.ResultsAmong 149 respondents (mean age = 29.9 ± 4.9 years; 57.0% female), 53.7% reported experiencing stress during the pandemic. Many residents (38.9%) were not aware of available mental health resources. A total of 17.4% of residents met the diagnostic criteria for PTSD, but only 1.3% reported a previous PTSD diagnosis. The most significant predictors of PTSD were neuroticism (odds ratio = 2.90, p = 0.046) and stress unrelated to the resident's program role during the pandemic (odds ratio = 5.88, p = 0.02).ConclusionsPTSD symptoms were highly prevalent among dental residents, with stress and neuroticism being the most significant predictors.

1067 Replicative and Non-Replicative Nightmares in the Development of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder

Abstract Introduction Nightmares are a frequent and disturbing symptom of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). They are associated with sleep disruption and increased psychopathology. There is growing evidence that different types of nightmares may differ in their effects on psychopathology. Previous findings suggest that nightmares that are close replications of the experienced traumatic event might be especially important in the development of PTSD. This study investigated trauma-related (replicative) and non-trauma-related (non-replicative) nightmares as predictors of PTSD in a civilian sample. Methods Participants were recruited from the general public of the greater Boston area. The sample consisted of 108 participants who had experienced a psychological trauma in the past 2 years (e.g. sexual or physical assaults and accidents). The criteria for PTSD were met by 49% of participants. PTSD diagnosis was assessed using the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV-TR Axis I Disorders-Non-Patient Edition. Participants received an Actiwatch 2 (Philips Respironics, Bend, OR) and a sleep diary for sleep measurements over an average of 14 consecutive nights. The diary included a prospective nightmare assessment and an item assessing the relatedness of each nightmare to traumatic events. Logistic regression analyses were performed with PTSD as the categorical outcome variable. Results Our analyses showed that replicative nightmares were the only statistically significant predictor of PTSD (OR = 1.2, p = .027), while controlling for age, sex, time since the traumatic event, and actigraphy total sleep time and minutes awake after sleep onset. All of these variables, including non-replicative nightmares, did not significantly predict PTSD in our analyses. Conclusion This study confirms and adds to the existing knowledge of nightmares and the importance of the degree to which they replicate the trauma in the development of PTSD. These findings underline the potential role of specific nightmare treatments after traumatic events, with a special focus on replicative nightmares. Support R01MH109638

Mental health among immigrants in Germany \u2013 the impact of self-attribution and attribution by others as an immigrant

BackgroundIn Germany, the term ‘migration background’ has been established to differentiate between immigrants and natives. In the present study post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, and depression were analysed in immigrant populations in Germany by considering self-attribution as well as attribution by others on one’s own ‘migration background’.MethodsIn a population-based survey (N = 2317), socio-demographic characteristics, migration background (official statistics definition vs. self-attribution as well as the anticipated attribution by others), PTSD (PCL-5), and symptoms of anxiety and depression (PHQ-4) were assessed. Logistic regression models were applied to predict mental health outcomes by considering socio-demographic and immigration-related factors.ResultsA total of 10.7% of respondents (N = 248) had a ‘migration background’. Immigrants of the 2nd generation compared to 1st generation immigrants are less likely to see themselves as immigrants. Attribution as an immigrant (self and/or by others) was found as significant predictor for PTSD and depression, but not anxiety.ConclusionsIt seems useful to focus on immigration-related factors considering subjective perspectives and not only comparing immigrants and natives using a federal statistics definition. Our findings suggest that research on the association between immigration-related factors such as attribution as an immigrant and mental health outcomes might be a promising approach to better identify subgroups at higher risk of mental distress.

Development and validation of the Stressful Experiences in Transit Questionnaire (SET-Q) and its Short Form (SET-SF)

ABSTRACT Background: Previous studies have demonstrated that traumatic experiences from countries of origin (so-called pre-migratory factors), as well as stressors in countries of destination (so-called post-migratory factors), are related to the extent of mental health difficulties and psychological well-being of refugees. However, numerous risks that this population is exposed to during transit have so far been neglected. Objective: The aim of this research was to construct and validate a questionnaire for assessing stressful and traumatic experiences in transit as well as its short form, which would at the same time provide information on one’s stressful experiences as well as existing risks that refugees are exposed to on their journey. Method: The study was realized in three phases – item construction, item revision and instrument validation. In the validation phase, a total of 226 refugees completed the Stressful Experiences in Transit Questionnaire (SET-Q), along with Harvard Trauma Questionnaire (HTQ) Parts I and IV, Hopkins Symptom Checklist-25 (HSCL-25) and Beck Depression Inventory – II (BDI-II). Results: Refugees were exposed to an average of 13 stressful events during transit. SET-Q total score was positively correlated with HTQ Part IV Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Self-Perception of Functioning scales (SPFS) while the number of stressful experiences with the local population was positively related to BDI-II depression symptoms. Moreover, SET-Q scores were significant predictors of PTSD and SPFS even after traumatic experiences in the country of origin, assessed by HTQ Part I, were taken into account. A short form of the questionnaire (SET-SF) has also been developed. Conclusions: SET-Q is a valid instrument for measuring the scope of stressful experiences refugees have been exposed to during transit, targeted for this population specifically. Furthermore, SET-SF has the potential to assess the same extent of stressful experiences with a significantly reduced number of items.

The Link between Posttraumatic Stress Disorder and Functionality among United States Military Service Members Psychiatrically Hospitalized Following a Suicide Crisis.

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is one of the most commonly diagnosed psychiatric disorders in the United States and has been linked to suicidal thoughts and behaviors, yet the role of a PTSD diagnosis on functional impairment among suicidal individuals remains unknown. This study examined the association between PTSD status and functional impairment among military psychiatric inpatients admitted for acute suicide risk (N = 166) with a lifetime history of at least one suicide attempt. Measures of functionality included: (1) alcohol use; (2) sleep quality; (3) social problem-solving; and (4) work and social adjustment. Thirty-eight percent of the sample met criteria for PTSD. Women were more likely than men to meet criteria for PTSD (p = 0.007), and participants who met PTSD criteria had significantly more psychiatric diagnoses (p < 0.001). Service members who met PTSD criteria reported more disturbed sleep (p = 0.003) and greater difficulties with work and social adjustment (p = 0.004) than those who did not meet PTSD criteria. However, functionality measures were not significantly associated with PTSD status after controlling for gender and psychiatric comorbidity. Gender and number of psychiatric comorbidities other than PTSD were significant predictors of PTSD in logistic regression models across four functionality measures. Future studies should assess the additive or mediating effect of psychiatric comorbidities in the association between impaired functioning and PTSD. Clinicians are encouraged to assess and address functionality during treatment with suicidal individuals, paying particular attention to individuals with multiple psychiatric diagnoses.

Psychological morbidities and positive psychological outcomes in people with traumatic spinal cord injury in Mainland China.

Cross-sectional survey. To explore the prevalences of three psychological morbidities (posttraumatic stress disorder, anxiety, and depression) and two positive psychological outcomes (resilience and posttraumatic growth) in people with spinal cord injury (SCI). To examine the relationships between the five aforementioned variables and to determine the predictors of the three psychological morbidities. Shanghai Sunshine Rehabilitation Center, Mainland China. Participants included 300 adults with SCI in one rehabilitation center in Shanghai. Standardized self-report measures were used. Sociodemographic, injury, and psychological variables were assessed. Descriptive analyses were used to calculate the prevalences of five psychological outcome variables. Pearson correlation analyses were conducted to examine the relationships between the five psychological variables and regression analyses were conducted to determine the predictors of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, and depression. Of the 300 respondents, 35%, 29%, and 27% exceeded the clinical cutoff score for PTSD, anxiety, and depression, respectively. About 32% reported good resilience, and 51% reported moderate to high levels of posttraumatic growth (PTG). Three psychological morbidities showed positive correlations between each other while significant negative relationships with the resilience and PTG. Hierarchical regressions indicated that both the extent of environmental barriers and resilience were the significant predictors of PTSD, anxiety, and depression. High prevalences of psychological morbidities were found in the SCI population in Mainland China. They should be identified and intervened early in the rehabilitation process. Some positive psychological techniques that focus on increasing resilience and promoting PTG would likely be beneficial for the SCI population.

Residual Sleep Problems Predict Reduced Response to Prolonged Exposure among Veterans with PTSD.

While evidence-based treatments exist for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), a significant sub-set of veterans continue to meet criteria for PTSD after treatment. Sleep problems may affect treatment retention and predict efficacy for PTSD treatments. The present study used data from a clinical trial of Prolonged Exposure therapy (PE) administered to veterans (N=154) to evaluate whether residual sleep symptoms remained after treatment completion, and if so, whether these residual sleep symptoms were associated with higher levels of PTSD and comorbid depression at the end of treatment. Participants (ages 20 to 75 years old; 35.7% Black; 54.5% married) completed demographic questions, symptom assessments, and engagement-related surveys. Hierarchical multiple linear regression models demonstrated that changes in sleep were significant predictors of PTSD and depression symptom reduction above and beyond the influence of demographic and engagement factors (e.g., therapy satisfaction). Greater residual sleep symptoms were predictive of smaller treatment gains. Findings illustrate the potential significance of sleep during the course of PTSD treatment, leading to several important clinical assessment and treatment implications.

Post-traumatic Stress Disorder among child perpetrators and victims of violence from the Northern Uganda civil war: Findings from the WAYS study

War experiences are known risk factors for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other poor psychosocial outcomes. This study aimed to assess the extent to which perpetrating violence (operationalised as intentional and unintentional killing or mutilation) and being a victim of violence (operationalised as being a victim of violence, e. g., witnessing violence, injuries, torture) predict PTSD and other psychosocial outcomes independently in war-affected youth of Northern Uganda. Data on war experiences, PTSD, psychosocial problems, and socio-demographic characteristics were collected from the youth formerly abducted by the Ugandan Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) at baseline (mean age = 22.39 years; SD = 10.47) and at follow-up (mean age = 23.52 years; SD = 9.28) using self-report questionnaires. On average, the participants spent 3.13 years in captivity (SD = 2.99) and were abducted at 14.14 years of age (SD = 4.21). Regression models were fitted to predict PTSD and psychosocial outcomes from perpetrating violence controlling for being a victim of violence and demographic characteristics. Thirty-seven percent (n = 168) reported killing or being responsible for killing while in rebel captivity. After adjusting for being a victim of violence, perpetrating violence remained a statistically significant predictor of PTSD and poor psychosocial outcomes such as depression, anxiety, somatic complaints, psychotic symptoms, and conduct problems. Among war-affected youth returning from LRA captivity, perpetrating violence may just be as toxic a risk factor for PTSD and other psychosocial outcomes as being a victim of violence. Mental health workers should consider both the effects of being a victim of violence and perpetrating violence in treatment planning.

Trauma type as a conditional risk factor for posttraumatic stress disorder in a referred clinic sample of adolescents

IntroductionTraumatic experiences that are varied in type and severity may lead to the development of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Some trauma types present a higher conditional risk for PTSD owing to their nature and impact on growth and functioning. Few studies have investigated the conditional risk of PTSD in clinic referred adolescents in low- and middle-income countries. The aim of the study was to determine the conditional risk for PTSD based on various trauma types (car accidents, other serious accidents, fires, witnessing a natural disaster, witnessing a violent crime, being confronted with traumatic news, witnessing domestic violence, physical abuse and sexual abuse) and to stratify risk by gender. MethodAdolescents exposed to at least one Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, fourth edition (DSM-IV) qualifying trauma were referred to a research clinic in Cape Town, South Africa (n = 216). PTSD status was assessed using a clinician administered interview. Conditional risk was determined using backwards stepwise multiple logistic regression analysis for 1) the whole sample, 2) females only and 3) males only. Gender differences in exposure to trauma types were determined using chi-square tests and cross-tabulation. ResultsThe prevalence of PTSD was 48.1% in the whole sample. Age (β = .16, p = .048, OR 1.17), fire exposure (β = 2.32, p = .036, OR 10.12) and sexual abuse (β = .93, p = .001, OR 2.54) were significant predictors of PTSD in the whole sample with the model explaining 12.4% of the variance in PTSD status. Age (β = .22, p = .041, OR 1.24) and sexual abuse (β = .87, p = .018, OR 2.39) were significant predictors of PTSD in female participants and explained 9.8% of the variance in PTSD status. Being a victim of a violent crime (β = .78 p = .100, OR 2.19) was the only remaining predictor of PTSD in male participants and showed a trend towards significance. The model explained 7% of the variance in PTSD status. ConclusionsThe findings underscore the importance of timely identification of trauma, particularly, sexual abuse and violence. Longitudinal tracking of adolescents exposed to different trauma types may identify those in need of treatment and enhance our understanding of the lasting impact of trauma.

Mediation and Moderation of the Relationship Between Combat Experiences and Post-Traumatic Stress Symptoms in Active Duty Military Personnel.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a major health concern among the U.S. military population, affecting up to 12% to 24% of veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan. Sleep disturbances, neuroticism, and childhood trauma have all been associated with the development of PTSD in military populations, especially in relation to combat experiences. The effects of disrupted sleep and post-traumatic stress can affect the physical well-being of soldier and sailors in the field and impact them for years after deployment. This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between self-reported measures of combat experiences, PTSD symptoms, sleep, neuroticism, and childhood adversity in an active duty military population. 972 U.S. Navy Sailors serving in Afghanistan were given anonymous surveys that assess scales of combat stressors, PTSD symptoms, sleep problems, neuroticism, adverse child experiences (ACEs), and other covariates. Sleep disturbances were hypothesized as moderators, having an indirect effect on the relationship between combat experiences and PTSD symptoms. Neuroticism scores and ACEs were proposed as moderators of the combat-PTSD symptom relationship. Mediation and moderation models were developed and tested using logistic regressions. Increased number of combat experiences was found to be a significant predictor of PTSD, even when adjusting for all covariates (p < 0.05). Consistent with partial mediation, nightmares had an indirect effect on the relationship between combat experiences and PTSD symptoms in the final model (path coefficient = 0.233, 95% confidence interval = 0.036, 0.483). Neuroticism was an independent predictor of PTSD symptoms (p < 0.001), but the interaction of combat and neuroticism did not predict symptoms of PTSD. ACEs did not have a significant impact in the model as either an independent predictor or a moderating factor. These results indicate that the presence of nightmares may partially explain how traumatic combat experiences lead to the development of PTSD. The study also reaffirms neuroticism as risk factor for developing PTSD symptoms. These findings highlight the importance of sleep hygiene and operational stress models in combat situations and may help stress control professionals address risk factors associated with PTSD symptoms.

The Impact of Lifetime Victimization and Polyvictimization on Adolescents in Québec: Mental Health Symptoms and Gender Differences

This study documents lifetime experiences of victimizations, polyvictimization, and trauma symptoms among 1,400 adolescents from the province of Québec. The vast majority (81%) of adolescents were victimized during their lifetime, with most victims (82%) being the target of more than one form of victimization. Polyvictimization accounted for most variability in scores of depression, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and anger/ aggression compared to individual victimization categories. Sexual victimization and maltreatment still made an independent contribution in predicting all trauma scores once polyvictimization was considered. Gender differences were found in the victimization experiences contributing to the prediction of mental health symptoms. Sexual victimization was a significant predictor of PTSD and anger/aggression symptoms for girls, whereas witnessing violence predicted anger and PTSD symptoms for boys, and assault predicted their anger. This study outlines the importance of assessing various types of victimization among adolescents. Systematic data and observation of trends on child victimization are needed in Canada and elsewhere.

Differences in Abuse, Neglect, and Exposure to Community Violence in Adolescents With and Without PTSD and Depression.

South African adolescents are exposed to high levels of violence and trauma, including community violence, abuse, and neglect. Violence and trauma are associated with negative mental health outcomes, including posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression. Demographic characteristics, additional exposure to trauma, community violence, and types of childhood abuse and neglect may place adolescents at greater risk of developing PTSD. This study aimed to first assess the weighted contribution of demographic factors, trauma load, community violence, and types of abuse and neglect in predicting PTSD symptom severity. Second, we aimed to determine group differences in demographic factors, trauma load, community violence, and types of abuse and neglect among participants with no disorder, PTSD only, PTSD and depression, and depression only. Participants were 215 adolescents identified with emotional and/or behavioral problems and referred to an adolescent trauma clinic from schools in the Western Cape region of South Africa. Clinical assessments were undertaken to assess community violence exposure; physical, sexual, and emotional abuse; physical and emotional neglect; and a clinical diagnosis of PTSD and comorbidity. Trauma-exposed adolescents with PTSD and depression reported significantly higher levels of emotional abuse and community violence exposure in comparison with trauma-exposed adolescents without a disorder. Emotional abuse, community violence exposure, and female gender were significant predictors of PTSD in regression analysis. These findings underscore the contribution of different types of trauma in the development of PTSD. Interventions focused on preventing trauma, PTSD, and depression should be multifaceted and be targeted at various levels, for example, individual/interpersonal level (reduce abuse in the household and immediate environment) and community/societal level (reduce crime rates in communities and strengthen conviction policies). Traumatized youth should routinely be screened for a history of abuse and particularly exposure to community violence, given their strong association with PTSD.

Mental health problems among children and adolescents experiencing two major earthquakes in remote mountainous regions: A longitudinal study

ObjectiveMillions of children were exposed to major earthquake in China, with serious psychological and developmental consequences. To obtain accurate rate of post-disaster related disorder and identify predictors may help inform post-disaster rescue and rehabilitation efforts. The present longitudinal study explored correlations of demographic and socioeconomic characteristics of juvenile survivors of the Ya'an and Wenchuan earthquakes in China with their trajectories of post-disaster related disorder. MethodsA total of 435 Chinese children and adolescents who survived the 2013 Ya'an earthquake were recruited from six primary, secondary and high schools in Baoxing County. All survivors were assessed at 12months after the disaster, when a trained psychiatrist assessed mental health problems in a face-to-face structured interview, and 153 survivors were followed up at 30months after the earthquake via telephone. ResultsThe 12-month assessment indicated a post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) prevalence of 43.9% as well as depression (20.9%) or the criteria for both PTSD and depression (18.2%) and the other disorder (0.9%). The 30-month assessment indicated that 15.7% of subjects met the criteria for PTSD, 21.6% met the criteria for depression. No subjects met the criteria for other affective or anxiety disorders. Significant predictors of PTSD and depression were death in the family, previous earthquake experience, a poor parent–child relationship and economic pressure or poverty. LimitationsClinical interview face to face is quite different from via telephone and the attrition rate in the longitudinal cohort is high, which would directly affect our results of the assessment. ConclusionsPTSD and depression may be as prevalent and persistent in disaster victims in China as elsewhere, and high co-comorbidities remain poorly understood. Although many adolescents recover over time, some exhibit chronic, delayed-onset PTSD and depression, especially those with poor relationships with their parents or those living in precarious economic conditions. Family-based therapy may be needed to support child and adolescent trauma survivors in order to prevent mental illness.

Coping, Personality and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder in Nurses Affected by Super Storm Sandy

Objectives: To identify the incidence of post-traumatic stress disorder experienced by nurses as a result of a natural disaster, and its relationship to personality and coping style. Design and Sample: A descriptive correlational design was used to examine the relationships between and among the variables using an anonymous online survey. Measures: Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) was measured using the PTSD-8 [1]. The Brief COPE [2] was used to measure coping style. Personality was measured utilizing the State Trait Personality Inventory [3]. Participants answered demographic questions such as gender and age, and how they were affected by the storm. Results: Over 19% percent of the nurse participants met the criteria for PTSD. The significant predictors of PTSD were the personality characteristics of state-anxiety, state-trait and trait depression, and the coping strategies of active coping, denial, acceptance, instrumental support, behavioral disengagement, venting and planning. The final regression model explained 90.7% of the variance in high PTSD-8 score. Conclusions: The findings of this study support the literature and the researchers’ belief, that there is a relationship among coping, personality, and PTSD. More research is needed to understand the individual coping mechanisms that nurses utilize during times of stress and how they are related to personality and PTSD.

Traumatic dissociation as a predictor of posttraumatic stress disorder in South African female rape survivors.

Women survivors of rape are at an increased risk for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Traumatic dissociation has been identified as a precursor of PTSD. This study assessed the predictive potential of traumatic dissociation in PTSD and depression development.The study followed a longitudinal, prospective design. Ninety-seven female rape survivors were recruited from 2 clinics in Cape Town, South Africa. Clinical interviews and symptom status assessments of the participants were completed to measure dissociation, childhood traumas, resilience, depression, and PTSD.Traumatic dissociation was a significant predictor of PTSD and depression. The linear combination of prior dissociation, current dissociation, and resilience significantly explained 20.7% of the variance in PTSD. Dissociation mediated the relationship between resilience and PTSD.As traumatic dissociation significantly predicts PTSD, its early identification and management may reduce the risk of developing PTSD. Interventions focused on promoting resilience may also be successful in reducing the risk of dissociation following rape.
