The effect of Baduanjin on body mass and body composition of college students: A randomized controlled trial.

Previous studies have also found that Baduanjin training can improve health-related physical fitness in young adults. However, it is unclear whether Baduanjin training can improve body mass and body composition in young adults. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of the Baduanjin training on body mass and body composition in college students. This was a single-center, randomized controlled trial comparing 12 weeks of Baduanjin exercise training group (BEG) at a frequency of 60 minutes per day, 4 days per week with no special exercise control group (CG) on the health-related physical fitness in college students. Body mass and body composition were assessed using the body mass index, waist-to-hip ratio, and Inbody 720 devices. A total of 93 college students (56 in the BEG and 37 in the CG) completed 2 body composition assessments and were included in the analysis. A mixed linear model was used to analyze the effect of the Baduanjin exercise intervention. After 12 weeks of intervention, the body mass index and waist-to-hip ratio in the BEG were significantly lower than that in the CG (P =.007 and P =.028) with a moderate effect size (Cohen d = 0.584 and 0.474) and a significant interaction effect of group by time (P =.007 and.028). The fat mass indicators of body composition including percent body fat, body fat mass, and body fat mass of both arms, both legs and trunk in the BEG were significantly lower than those in the CG (all P <.05), with a moderate effect size (Cohen d from 0.452 to 0.624) and a significant interaction effect of group by time (all P <.05); no significant differences were found in the total body composition indicators and the fat-free mass indicators of body composition between the 2 groups. Regular Baduanjin exercise training may be beneficial for improving body composition in young adults.

Effects of Heart Rate Variability (HRV) Biofeedback in Pulmonary Indicators and HRV Indices Among Patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease.

Patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) exhibit reduced cardiac autonomic activity, linked to poor prognosis and exercise intolerance. While heart rate variability biofeedback (HRVB) can enhance cardiac autonomic activity in various diseases, its use in patients with COPD is limited. This study explored the impact of the HRVB on cardiac autonomic activity and pulmonary indicators in patients with COPD. Fifty-three patients with COPD were assigned to either the HRVB (n = 26) or the control group (n = 27), with both groups receiving standard medical care. The HRVB group also underwent one-hour HRVB sessions weekly for six weeks. All participants had pre- and post-test measurements, including the Six-Minute Walking Test (6MWT), lead II electrocardiogram (ECG) recording, Modified Medical Research Council Dyspnea Scale (mMRC), body mass index, airflow obstruction, dyspnea, and exercise capacity (BODE) index. ECG data were analyzed for heart rate variability (HRV) as an index of cardiac autonomic activity. A two-way mixed analysis of variances demonstrated significant interaction effects of Group × Time in pulmonary indicators and HRV indices. The HRVB group exhibited significant post-test improvements, with decreased mMRC and BODE scores and increased 6MWT distance and HRV indices, compared to pre-test results. The 6MWT distance significantly increased and mMRC significantly decreased at post-test in the HRVB group compared with the control group. This study confirmed the efficacy of HRVB as an adjunct therapy in patients with COPD, showing improvements in exercise capacity, breathing difficulties, and cardiac autonomic activity.

The effects of task complexity on linguistic complexity and perception in English native speakers’ and L2 speakers’ argumentative writing

This study investigates how task complexity affects native speakers’ and second language (L2) learners’, and experts’ perceptions of task difficulty in writing tasks. It also explores how task complexity influences English native speakers’ and L2 learners’ linguistic complexity in their writing. Ninety participants performed one simple and one complex argumentative writing task manipulated by task complexity (± elements and reasoning demands) and counterbalanced. Their essays were analyzed using linguistic complexity metrics. The results showed that English native speakers, L2 learners, and experts perceived the complex task as requiring more mental effort, being more stressful, and creating more planning and writing time pressure than the simple task. The native speakers demonstrated greater overall linguistic complexity than the L2 learners in the two writing tasks. However, both English native speakers and L2 learners produced longer T-units and more diverse vocabulary in the complex task than in the simple task but also produced more syntactically similar structures in the complex task. Significant interaction effects of group (L1 and L2) and task (± elements and reasoning demands) were found for five linguistic complexity metrics. Theoretical and methodological implications are discussed in light of Robinson’s cognition hypothesis and Hayes’s writing model.

Efficacy of probiotic supplements in improving the symptoms of psychosis, anxiety, insomnia, and anorexia due to amphetamine and methamphetamine use: a randomized clinical trial.

Changes in the density and diversity of gut microbiota in chronic use of methamphetamine have been mentioned as contributors to psychotic and anxiety symptoms, sleep problems, and loss of appetite. In this placebo-controlled clinical trial, we investigated the effect of the probiotic Lactobacillus Acidophilus in improving psychiatric symptoms among hospitalized patients with chronic methamphetamine use along with psychotic symptoms. 60 inpatients with a history of more than 3 years of methamphetamine use, were randomly assigned to one of two groups receiving either a probiotic capsule or placebo along with risperidone for 8 weeks based on a simple randomization method. In weeks 0, 4, and 8, patients were evaluated using the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS), Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI), Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), Simple Appetite Nutritional Questionnaire (SANQ), and Body Mass Index (BMI). Compared to the control group, patients receiving probiotics had better sleep quality, greater appetite, and higher body mass index (there were significant interaction effects of group and time at Week 8 in these variables (t = -3.32, B = -1.83, p = .001, d = 0.89), (t = 10.50, B = 2.65, p <.001, d = 1.25) and (t = 3.40, B = 0.76, p <.001, d = 0.30), respectively. In terms of the improvement of psychotic and anxiety symptoms, there was no statistically significant difference between the two groups. The use of probiotics was associated with improved sleep quality, increased appetite, and increased body mass index in patients with chronic methamphetamine use. Conducting more definitive clinical trials with larger sample sizes and longer-term follow-up of cases is recommended.

Hypoxic, blood flow restriction, or eccentric cycling: Which training intervention is the most effective in elderly individuals?

Introduction&#x0D; The global rise in the elderly population is accompanied by an increased incidence of non-communicable diseases, including cancers, cardiovascular conditions, or sarcopenia. Therefore, it becomes crucial to find effective strategies to delay the onset or slow down the progression of these diseases. Hypoxic (HYP), blood flow restriction (BFR), and eccentric (ECC) training are promising modalities to mitigate the effects of aging. However, these training strategies have never been compared. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate whether moderate-intensity intermittent training (MIIT) combined with HYP, BFR, or ECC can induce similar or greater effects in strength and muscle mass in the elderly, compared to traditional cycling training (CON).&#x0D; Methods&#x0D; Fifty-five elderly participants completed a four-week MIIT protocol on cycle ergometers, divided into HYP, BFR, ECC, and CON groups. The HYP group trained under hypoxic conditions (inspired oxygen fraction ~14%), BFR group used occlusion cuffs applied proximally on thighs (~350 mmHg occlusion pressure), ECC group trained with an eccentric cycle-ergometer, and the CON group underwent standard cycling training. The first week consisted of 3 sets of 5 min exercise followed by 5 min rest and an additional set was added each week. All groups maintained a 60-rpm cadence, with intensity set at a 14-perceived exertion level on the 6-20 Borg scale.&#x0D; Strength parameters were assessed via isokinetic tests at angular velocities of 30°/s, 90°/s, and 180°/s, as well as isometric and endurance tests. Endurance strength was calculated as a percentage decrement score during 30 repetitions at 180°/s and the rate of force development was calculated on the isometric test.&#x0D; Muscle-bone cross-sectional area (CSA) was measured by integrating thigh circumference measured using a measuring tape, and anterior and posterior adipose tissue thickness assessed with a B-mode ultrasound.&#x0D; Results&#x0D; Post-training, all groups showed increased isometric quadriceps strength (14 ± 15%, p &lt; 0.001) and strength at all angular velocities: 18 ± 17% and 15 ± 21% (30°/s), 17 ± 20% and 20 ± 26% (90°/s), 10 ± 14% and 10 ± 16% (180°/s) for quadriceps and hamstrings respectively, all P &lt; 0.001. No significant group interaction effects were noted, except for hamstring strength at 30°/s (P = 0.038), with no improvements in the ECC group. No changes in the rate of force development or dynamic endurance post-training were noted. Thigh circumference increased (1 ± 2%, p = 0.008), without difference between training modalities.&#x0D; No significant variations in adipose tissue thickness or muscle-bone CSA occurred. The ECC group had higher training intensity (173.2 ± 7.5 W) than HYP (169.6 ± 9.8 W), BFR (169.9 ± 11.6 W), and CON (169.6 ± 8.4 W) groups (p &lt; 0.001). Training heart rate was lower in ECC (104.5 ± 6.6 bpm) compared to BFR (117.5 ± 10.5 bpm; p = 0.007) and CON (122.2 ± 12.3 bpm; p = 0.001), but similar to HYP (112.2 ± 9.4 bpm).&#x0D; Discussion/Conclusion&#x0D; MIIT, regardless of modality, effectively improves muscle strength in the elderly. Unexpectedly, no single training method was superior. Power output reduction has been proposed as an advantage of HYP and BFR modalities but was not observed in the present study. These results advocate for a personalized approach to training prescriptions, considering individual preferences and health conditions. Future research should explore longer training durations and impacts on other health outcomes such as cardiovascular and respiratory health.

Sensory reweighting and self-motion perception for postural control under single-sensory and multisensory perturbations in older Tai Chi practitioners.

Impairment in perception and sensory reweighting could predispose older adults to falls. This exploratory study aimed to investigate the differences in sensory reweighting and self-motion perception for postural control under single-sensory and multisensory perturbations between older Tai Chi (TC) practitioners and healthy active older controls. Twenty-four TC practitioners and 23 age-matched non-practitioners were recruited in this observational study. Participants stood on a force plate with or without a foam surface (baseline), followed by 36 s of visual rotation stimuli, vestibular rotation stimuli, or reduced somatosensory input (adaptation), and then continued standing for 44 s (reintegration). The center-of-pressure (COP) trajectories and self-motion perception were recorded. COP signals were analyzed using traditional sway, multiscale entropy, and wavelet analysis methods and the time-window-of-integration model to examine the postural balance performance and the flexibility and speed of sensory reweighting. Significant interaction effects of group with sensory perturbation and group with time window on COP parameters were observed (p < 0.05). Compared with non-practitioners, TC practitioners exhibited higher postural stability and complexity as the difficulty of standing tasks increased and smaller time windows to return to baseline levels as disturbance time evolved. Moreover, TC practitioners exhibited significantly greater weighting on unperturbed sensory systems, lower weighting on perturbed sensory systems for postural control, and higher self-motion perception ability under visual, vestibular, and visual-vestibular perturbations (p < 0.05). Long-term TC practitioners exhibited superior postural stability and adaptability under challenging sensory perturbations, and smaller amplitudes and shorter durations of postural aftereffects over time during adaptation and reintegration. These improvements may be partly attributed to more rapid and flexible sensory reweighting and improved self-motion perception for postural control.

Effect of Baduanjin exercise on executive function in older adults with cognitive frailty: A randomized controlled trial

Objective To investigate the effectiveness of Baduanjin exercise on executive function in community-dwelling older adults with cognitive frailty. Design Randomized controlled trial. Setting Community residential centers. Subjects 120 eligible older adults. Interventions Baduanjin training group received supervised Baduanjin training, 60 min sessions three times per week for 24 weeks. The control group did not receive any exercise intervention. Main measures Primary outcome was executive function, assessed using Clock Drawing Test. Secondary outcomes included the subcomponents of executive function (working memory, inhibitory control and cognitive flexibility), attention and cognitive frailty (global cognitive function, physical frailty) assessed using Verbal Fluency Test, Trail Making Test-A/B, Stroop Test, Montreal Cognitive Assessment and Edmonton Frailty Scale, respectively, at baseline and 24 weeks after intervention. Results After the 24-week intervention, the scores of Clock Drawing Test and Verbal Fluency Test, the Trail Making Test-B time and the Card correct numbers of Stroop Test in Baduanjin training group showed significant improvement compared with control group (all P < 0.05) with small to moderate effect sizes and the significant interaction effect of group by time in the Clock Drawing Test and Trail Making Test-B test (P = 0.003 and P = 0.043); cognitive frailty variables, including Montreal Cognitive Assessment and Edmonton Frail Scale scores, also showed significant improvement (P = 0.002 and P = 0.004) with a moderate effect sizes and a significant interaction effect (P < 0.001, P = 0.013). No adverse events were reported. Conclusion Regular Baduanjin training may be an effective and safe intervention to improve cognitive frailty and executive function in community-dwelling older adults with cognitive frailty. Exploring expected reward and efficacy in enhancing cognitive control in patients with depression

ABSTRACT Background Depression is associated with impairments in cognitive control. Considering the lack of mechanistic models accounting for cognitive control deficits in depression, the expected value of control (EVC) theory offers a mechanistic view for allocating cognitive control emphasizing motivational components (efficacy, value). Efficacy refers to the possibility that an effort leads to a special outcome and reward refers to the value (amount) associated with the outcome. This study aimed to examine the role of the EVC in depression. Method This study used a within-between-subject design. Participants with depression (n = 36) and healthy controls (n = 31) completed a clinical diagnostic interview, the Beck Depression Inventory-II, the General Health Questionnaire-12, and a computer-based incentivized Stroop Color-Word Paradigm in which levels of efficacy (high vs. low) and the amount of rewards (high vs. low) were presented as cues before target stimuli. Results We found significant interaction effects of group × efficacy and efficacy × reward in terms of reaction time in the Stroop Paradigm. Follow-up analyses indicated the Depressed group were significantly slower than Controls on high efficacy trials, but the two groups did not differ significantly on low efficacy trials. Additionally, on high efficacy trials, reward did not influence performance, but on low efficacy trials, high reward improved performance in both groups. Limitation Lack of neurological measures and eye tracking techniques. Conclusion Overall, our findings suggest that reward and efficacy may jointly improve cognitive control allocation and highlight the need for further research examining EVC theory as a mechanistic account of cognitive control deficits in depression.

Efficacy of spironolactone as adjunctive therapy to sodium valproate in bipolar-I disorder: A double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trial.

Treatment of mood and cognitive symptoms of patients with bipolar disorder is associated with many complications and is generally not associated with therapeutic satisfaction. In this clinical trial, we evaluated the effectiveness of spironolactone in controlling mood and cognitive symptoms, sleep quality, appetite, and body mass index in patients with bipolar disorder in manic episodes. Sixty inpatients with bipolar disorder in manic episodes were treated with spironolactone/placebo in an 8-week randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial. They were evaluated using the Young Mania Rating Scale (YMRS), mini-mental state examination (MMSE), Pittsburgh sleep quality index, Simplified Nutritional Appetite Questionnaire, and body mass index in weeks 1, 4, and 8. For cognitive impairment (MMSE), there were significant interaction effects of group and time at week 8 (B=-1.60, SE=0.69, t=-2.33, p=.021) such that individuals in the spironolactone group experienced more improvement in their cognitive performance. For manic symptoms (YMRS), there were no significant interaction effects of group and time at week 8 (B=-2.53, SE=1.46, t=-1.73, p=.085). Considering the promising findings in this clinical trial, further study of spironolactone as adjunctive therapy in bipolar disorder in manic episodes with larger sample sizes, multicenter settings, and longer follow-ups are recommended.

Effects of 12 weeks colostrum milk supplement among older adults: A randomised, double-blind and placebo-controlled trial

The effects of milk intake, particularly bovine colostrum-enriched skim milk among older adults, were investigated. Sixty-six adults aged 50–69 years old were recruited for a 12-weeks double-blind, randomised, placebo-controlled trial. Participants were instructed to consume colostrum-enriched or placebo skim bovine milk in two sachets daily. Participants in the intervention and placebo groups showed significant (p <0.05) drop in BMI, hip circumference, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, improvement in physical fitness test and increment in differential white cell count. Further, consumption of bovine colostrum-enriched skim milk could significantly (p <0.05) improve verbal memory (as indicated by Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test score), and reduce total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol levels among older adults. However, none of the outcome measurements showed a significant interaction effect of group and time. In conclusion, consuming milk, especially the bovine colostrum-enriched skim milk could provide beneficiary health effects and promote healthy ageing among older adults.

Effect of self-acupressure on fatigue-predominant subhealth in young and middle-aged adults: A randomized controlled trial

IntroductionFatigue is the most prominent symptom of fatigue-predominant subhealth (FPSH). Relieving fatigue can effectively reduce the occurrence and development of FPSH to help people with FPSH transform into a healthy state. This study aimed to investigate the effects of self-acupressure on young and middle-aged people with FPSH. MethodsThis study was a randomized controlled trial. Fifty-four eligible participants were randomized into the experimental group (self-acupressure intervention and health education) and the control group (health education). In the experimental group, the selected acupoints were DU20, GB21, ST36, SP6, and LR3, each pressed for three minutes, once a day, 5 days a week for 4 weeks. The primary outcomes were fatigue symptoms assessed using the Fatigue Scale-14 (FS-14) and Checklist Individual Strength (CIS). Data were collected at baseline, after 2-weeks of intervention, and after 4-weeks of intervention. A generalized estimating equation was used to analyze the repeated data. ResultsThe generalized estimating equation showed that there were significant interaction effects of group and time for physical fatigue scores, mental fatigue scores, total FS-14 scores, fatigue severity scores, motivation scores, and total CIS scores (P<0.05). This suggested that the scores for the primary outcomes varied over time in both groups. Compared to those in the control group, participants in the experimental group experienced significant improvements in fatigue symptoms (including physical fatigue, mental fatigue, fatigue severity, and motivation). In addition, no treatment-related adverse events were observed during the study. ConclusionsThese findings provide evidence for the effectiveness of self-acupressure in young and middle-aged adults with FPSH.

Altered interaction of physiological activity and behavior affects risky decision-making in ADHD.

Adult attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is often associated with risky decision-making behavior. However, current research studies are often limited by the ability to adequately reflect daily behavior in a laboratory setting. Over the lifespan impairments in cognitive functions appear to improve, whereas affective functions become more severe. We assume that risk behavior in ADHD arises predominantly from deficits in affective processes. This study will therefore aim to investigate whether a dysfunction in affective pathways causes an abnormal risky decision-making (DM) behavior in adult ADHD. Twenty-eight participants with ADHD and twenty-eight healthy controls completed a battery of questionnaires regarding clinical symptoms, self-assessment of behavior and emotional competence. Furthermore, skin conductance responses were measured during the performance in a modified version of the Balloon Analogue Risk Task. A linear mixed-effects model analysis was used to analyze emotional arousal prior to a decision and after feedback display. Results showed higher emotional arousal in ADHD participants before decision-making (β = -0.12, SE = 0.05, t = -2.63, p < 0.001) and after feedback display (β = -0.14, SE = 0.05, t = -2.66, p = 0.008). Although risky behavior was greater in HC than in ADHD, we found a significant interaction effect of group and anticipatory skin conductance responses regarding the response behavior (β = 107.17, SE = 41.91, t = 2.56, p = 0.011). Post hoc analyses revealed a positive correlation between anticipatory skin conductance responses and reaction time in HC, whereas this correlation was negative in ADHD. Self-assessment results were in line with the objective measurements. We found altered changes in physiological activity during a risky decision-making task. The results confirm the assumption of an aberrant relationship between bodily response and risky behavior in adult ADHD. However, further research is needed with respect to age and gender when considering physiological activities.

Effects of Aquatic Exercise Training on Physical Performance and Mood States in Male Collegiate Soccer Players

ABSTRACT Introduction/Purpose This study investigated the effects of aquatic exercise training on the physical performance and mood states of male collegiate soccer players. Methods Twenty male collegiate soccer players (age 19.9 ± 0.9 yr) performed aquatic exercise training composed of warm-up exercises, high-intensity interval training, resistance training using tools, and cooldown activities. Training was performed for 30 min·d−1, twice per week for 11 wk. Participants were randomly allocated to the training or control groups (n = 10 each). The participants’ anthropometric measurements, range of motion (ROM), muscle strength, change of direction, endurance performance, and mood states were assessed at baseline and after the 11-wk intervention period. Results After the intervention, the ROM of the shoulder and hip joints and the isokinetic and back muscle strength increased in the training group (P &lt; 0.05 each). Significant group–time interaction effects was observed between the two groups in the ROM of the shoulder and hip joints and in isokinetic and back muscle strength (P &lt; 0.05 each). The Profile of Mood States, Second Edition vigor–activity scores increased in the training group (19.3 ± 6.4 to 24.5 ± 5.6 points, P = 0.007), and a significant interaction effect for group–time was observed for vigor–activity between the two groups (P = 0.005). Conclusions These results suggest that aquatic exercise training helps improve ROM, muscle strength, and mood in male collegiate soccer players.

Testing the Impacts of Rational-Emotive Couple Intervention in a Sample of Parents Seeking Divorce.

Marital burnout has not been extensively studied despite its huge consequences on family wellbeing and quality of family life. This study, using randomised-controlled trial, tested the impact of rational-emotive couple intervention on marital burnout in a sample of parents seeking a divorce. A total of 67 parents who participated during the rational-emotive couple intervention (RECI) were assessed using the marital burnout scale, Beck depression inventory, and parent rational and irrational beliefs scale. Crosstabulation, multivariate test analysis, and bivariate analysis were used to analyse the data collected. Results show a significant reduction of marital burnout in RECI group participants, and significant improvement was maintained at the follow-up stage. The result of the group and gender interaction effect shows no significant interaction effect of group and gender on participants' marital burnout at Time two and Time 3, respectively. The results indicate that a decrease in parents' irrational beliefs accounts for marital burnout among couples seeking a divorce. Marital burnout is positively associated with depression among couples seeking a divorce. This study concludes that the RECI is an effective intervention that reduces marital burnout which is a direct consequence of irrational beliefs which later metamorphose into depressive symptoms.

Does the Augmentation of Trauma Informed Hatha Yoga Increase the Effect of Dialectical Behavior Therapy for Substance Use Disorders on Psychopathological Strain of Patients with Borderline Personality Disorder and Comorbid Substance Use Disorder? Results of a Quasi-Experimental Study

Background: Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is one of the most common personality disorders among persons with substance use disorders (SUDs) and is characterized by severe clinical symptoms. The aim of this study was to investigate if the effect of dialectical behavior therapy for substance use disorders (DBT-S) inpatient treatment on psychopathological symptom load in patients suffering from both BPD and SUD can be augmented by weekly 60-min “Trauma Informed Hatha Yoga” sessions. Materials and Methods: Thirty-nine patients suffering from comorbid BPD and SUD were consecutively in time included in this quasi-experimental pilot study (first intervention then control group). In the intervention group, weekly Trauma Informed Hatha Yoga sessions were added to standard DBT-S for 8 weeks. The participants of the control group received standard DBT-S. All participants completed several self-report questionnaires to assess symptoms of depression, anxiety, symptoms of BPD, and their subjective stress perception at three points in time during the study course. Results: A repeated measures analysis of variance with patients’ psychopharmacological medication as covariate revealed a significant main effect of time for each of the psychometric scales (State and Trait Anxiety Inventory subscale for state anxiety [STAI-S] p = 0.001, Beck Depression Inventory [BDI] p < 0.001; Borderline Symptom List 23 [BSL] p = 0.036) indicating that the psychopathological symptom load of the patients was significantly lower at the end of the DBT-S therapy compared to the beginning in both study groups. Moreover, there was a significant interaction effect of group*time on the psychometric scales STAI-T (subscale for trait anxiety) sum score (p = 0.010) and the sum score of the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) (p = 0.043). This was expressed by the fact that the participants of the intervention group showed a significant reduction of the STAI-T sum score as well as the sum score of the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS), while the control group did not. Due to the exploratory nature of this study, correction for multiple testing was omitted. Conclusion: Although they are very preliminary, our results suggest that practicing Trauma Informed Hatha Yoga on a regular basis in addition to DBT-S inpatient treatment seems to reduce the level of trait anxiety and perceived stress significantly more than DBT-S inpatient treatment alone. Nevertheless, the effectiveness of Trauma Informed Hatha Yoga in reducing trait anxiety and perceived stress in patients suffering from SUD und BPD must be tested in large randomized controlled trials.

Effectiveness of a Hybrid Exercise Program on the Physical Abilities of Frail Elderly and Explainable Artificial-Intelligence-Based Clinical Assistance.

Background: Due to the low physical fitness of the frail elderly, current exercise program strategies have a limited impact. Eight-form Tai Chi has a low intensity, but high effectiveness in the elderly. Inspired by it, we designed an exercise program that incorporates eight-form Tai Chi, strength, and endurance exercises, to improve physical fitness and reverse frailty in the elderly. Additionally, for the ease of use in clinical practice, machine learning simulations were used to predict the frailty status after the intervention. Methods: For 24 weeks, 150 frail elderly people completed the experiment, which comprised the eight-form Tai Chi group (TC), the strength and endurance training group (SE), and a comprehensive intervention combining both TC and SE (TCSE). The comparison of the demographic variables used one-way ANOVA for continuous data and the chi-squared test for categorical data. Two-way repeated measures analysis of variance (ANOVA) was performed to determine significant main effects and interaction effects. Eleven machine learning models were used to predict the frailty status of the elderly following the intervention. Results: Two-way repeated measures ANOVA results before the intervention, group effects of ten-meter maximum walking speed (10 m MWS), grip strength (GS), timed up and go test (TUGT), and the six-minute walk test (6 min WT) were not significant. There was a significant interaction effect of group × time in ten-meter maximum walking speed, grip strength, and the six-minute walk test. Post hoc tests showed that after 24 weeks of intervention, subjects in the TCSE group showed the greatest significant improvements in ten-meter maximum walking speed (p < 0.05) and the six-minute walk test (p < 0.05) compared to the TC group and SE group. The improvement in grip strength in the TCSE group (4.29 kg) was slightly less than that in the SE group (5.16 kg). There was neither a significant main effect nor a significant interaction effect for TUGT in subjects. The stacking model outperformed other algorithms. Accuracy and the F1-score were 67.8% and 71.3%, respectively. Conclusion: A hybrid exercise program consisting of eight-form Tai Chi and strength and endurance exercises can more effectively improve physical fitness and reduce frailty among the elderly. It is possible to predict whether an elderly person will reverse frailty following an exercise program based on the stacking model.

Testing the effectiveness of an SCT-based training program in enhancing health self-efficacy and outcome expectations among college peer educators.

Peer health education (PHE) is a widely implemented prevention approach among college populations. While social cognitive theory (SCT; Bandura, 2004) has been assumed to account for the underlying mechanisms of PHE, no studies have tested the utility of an SCT-based training program in improving health-related outcomes among peer educators. The present study developed, implemented, and tested the effectiveness of a 15-week, SCT-based wellness coaching training program in enhancing health self-efficacy (HSE) and outcome expectations (HOE) among undergraduate peer educators. The quasi-experimental design included an SCT training group (n = 39), alternative training group (n = 46), and no-treatment control group (n = 46) and gathered data from participants at pretest, posttest, and 6-week follow-up. Results of a split-plot multivariate analysis of variance revealed a significant interaction effect for group and time when considering HSE and HOE together. Follow-up analyses indicated that the interaction was significant for HOE, but not for HSE. The SCT group reported significantly lower HOE than the control group at pretest but showed no differences in HOE scores compared to the other two groups at posttest or follow-up. Findings also revealed significant improvements in the SCT group's HSE scores over time. The findings provide initial empirical support for the effectiveness of SCT-based training programs in promoting positive health-related beliefs and attitudes among peer educators. Further, this study demonstrates that the process of training peer educators may be utilized as a health promotion strategy in and of itself. Metabolic syndrome components and leukocyte telomere length in patients with major depressive disorder

Objectives The relationship between metabolic syndrome (MetS) components and leukocyte telomere length (LTL) attrition in major depressive disorder (MDD) remains unclear. Methods We recruited 70 MDD patients (mean age: 44.6 years, 60.0% female) and 51 age- and sex-matched controls (mean age: 41.2 years, 68.6% female) to examine the associations of MetS components and LTL. Five MetS components—waist circumference, systolic/diastolic blood pressure, serum levels of fasting glucose, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), and triglycerides—were assessed. LTL was measured through quantitative polymerase chain reaction. Results MDD had higher prevalence of MetS (34.3 vs. 17.6%, p=.042), low HDL-C (25.7 vs. 7.8%, p=.009) and shorter LTL (-0.038 ± 0.169 vs. 0.033 ± 0.213, p=.042). Regression analysis revealed that MDD (p=.046) and age (p=.003) associated with LTL, while a significant interaction effect of group (MDD vs. controls) × HDL-C (p=.037) was observed. Post-hoc analysis showed MDD with low HDL-C had greater LTL attrition than controls without low HDL-C (p=.020). In MDD, HDL-C dysregulation negatively correlated with LTL (p=.010); but no significance after Bonferroni correction. Conclusions HDL-C may be involved in accelerated ageing process regarding metabolic disturbance in MDD only. The relationship merits prospective investigations with larger sample size for clarification.

An exploration of associations between smoking motives and behavior as a function of body mass index

ObjectiveCigarette smoking and obesity are the leading causes of premature morbidity and mortality and increase the risk of all-cause mortality four-fold when comorbid. Although research suggests that smoking motives may differ based on body mass index (BMI), it is unclear how these differences translate to smoking behavior. MethodThree groups of adults who smoke cigarettes (N = 79; obese n = 25, overweight n = 30, and lean n = 24) completed measures of smoking and the Smoking Motivations Questionnaire. Groups did not differ on age, education, cigarettes per day (CPD), pack-years, or nicotine dependence, as measured by the Fagerström Test for Cigarette Dependence (FTCD). ResultsAnalyses revealed different associations between reasons for smoking and smoking behavior depending on lean, overweight, or obesity status. Participants (N = 37 female, average age 39.8 years) self-reported smoking was positively associated with Addictive, and Automatic subscale scores among lean participants, with only the Addictive subscale score among those with overweight, and only the Automatic subscale score among those with obesity. Post hoc MANCOVA analysis revealed a significant interaction effect of Group x Automatic Smoking on Pack-years (F(2, 79)=3.34, p = 0.04). ConclusionFindings suggest smoking motives are differentially associated with smoking behavior in adults who smoke depending on weight status. The daily smoking rate of participants with obesity may be less related to the addictive quality of smoking, and automaticity may be less associated with smoking history in those with overweight. Additional research on the influence of BMI on cigarette smoking is necessary to fully elucidate how obesity may impact treatment outcomes to optimize smoking cessation treatment among those with excess body weight.

Associations of low-back pain and pain-related cognitions with lumbar movement patterns during repetitive seated reaching

BackgroundDevelopment of more effective interventions for nonspecific chronic low back pain (LBP), requires a robust theoretical framework regarding mechanisms underlying the persistence of LBP. Altered movement patterns, possibly driven by pain-related cognitions, are assumed to drive pain persistence, but cogent evidence is missing. AimTo assess variability and stability of lumbar movement patterns, during repetitive seated reaching, in people with and without LBP, and to investigate whether these movement characteristics are associated with pain-related cognitions. Methods60 participants were recruited, matched by age and sex (30 back-healthy and 30 with LBP). Mean age was 32.1 years (SD13.4). Mean Oswestry Disability Index-score in LBP-group was 15.7 (SD12.7). Pain-related cognitions were assessed by the ‘Pain Catastrophizing Scale’ (PCS), ‘Pain Anxiety Symptoms Scale’ (PASS) and the task-specific ‘Expected Back Strain’ scale(EBS). Participants performed a seated repetitive reaching movement (45 times), at self-selected speed. Lumbar movement patterns were assessed by an optical motion capture system recording positions of cluster markers, located on the spinous processes of S1 and T8. Movement patterns were characterized by the spatial variability (meanSD) of the lumbar Euler angles: flexion-extension, lateral-bending, axial-rotation, temporal variability (CyclSD) and local dynamic stability (LDE). Differences in movement patterns, between people with and without LBP and with high and low levels of pain-related cognitions, were assessed with factorial MANOVA. ResultsWe found no main effect of LBP on variability and stability, but there was a significant interaction effect of group and EBS. In the LBP-group, participants with high levels of EBS, showed increased MeanSDlateral-bending (p = 0.004, η2 = 0.14), indicating a large effect. MeanSDaxial-rotation approached significance (p = 0.06). SignificanceIn people with LBP, spatial variability was predicted by the task-specific EBS, but not by the general measures of pain-related cognitions. These results suggest that a high level of EBS is a driver of increased spatial variability, in participants with LBP.
