The Detectability of Post-Seismic Ground Displacement Using DInSAR and SBAS in Longwall Coal Mining: A Case Study in the Upper Silesian Coal Basin, Poland

The Upper Silesian coal basin (USCB) in Poland faces significant ground deformation issues resulting from mining activities conducted without backfill, which can persist for years. These activities can cause damage to surface structures and phenomena such as induced seismicity. Ground deformations can be monitored using differential synthetic aperture radar interferometry (DInSAR). However, various DInSAR approaches have their own advantages and limitations, particularly regarding accuracy and atmospheric filtering. This is especially important for high-frequency displacement signals associated with seismic activity, which can be filtered out. Therefore, this study aims to assess the detectability of mining-induced seismic events using interferometric techniques, focusing on the USCB area. In this experiment, we tested two InSAR approaches: conventional DInSAR without atmospheric filtering and the small baseline subset (SBAS) approach, where the atmospheric phase screen was estimated and removed using high-pass and low-pass filtering. The results indicate that, in most cases, post-seismic ground displacement is not detectable using both methods. This suggests that mining-related seismic events typically do not cause significant post-seismic ground displacement. Out of the 17 selected seismic events, only two were clearly visible in the DInSAR estimated deformation, while for four other events, some displacement signals could neither be definitively confirmed nor negated. Conversely, only one seismic event was clearly detectable in the SBAS displacement time series, with no evidence of induced tremors found for the other events. DInSAR proved to be more effective in capturing displacement signals compared to SBAS. This could be attributed to the small magnitude of the tremors and, consequently, the small size of the seismic sources. Throughout the investigated period, all registered events had magnitudes less than 4.0. This highlights the challenge of identifying any significant influence of low-magnitude tremors on ground deformation, necessitating further investigations. Moreover, SBAS techniques tend to underestimate mining displacement rates, leading to smoothed deformation estimates, which may render post-seismic effects invisible for events with low magnitudes. However, after an in-depth analysis of the 17 seismic events in the USCB, DInSAR was found to be more effective in capturing displacement signals compared to SBAS. This indicates the need for significant caution when applying atmospheric filtering to high-frequency displacement signals.

Multi-Scale Ground Deformation Analysis and Investigation of Driver Factors Based on Remote Sensing Data: A Case Study of Zhuhai City

Ground deformation poses an imminent threat to urban development. This study uses the multiscale geographically weighted regression (MGWR) model to investigate the spatial heterogeneity in factors influencing ground deformation, thereby elucidating the drivers behind regional variations in ground deformation patterns. To gain insights into the characteristics of ground deformation in Zhuhai, China, and its spatial relationship with natural and anthropogenic features, we initially utilized the small baseline subset interferometric synthetic aperture radar (SBAS-InSAR) method to collect data on ground deformation and its distribution across the entire area. Concurrently, remote sensing imagery was used to identify the various mechanisms affecting ground deformation during the same period, including geotectonic conditions, geographic environment, and human activities. Subsequently, we used the MGWR model to quantitatively estimate the effects of these driving force factors on ground deformation in Zhuhai. Our findings reveal significant ground deformation in specific areas, including Baijiao Town (Doumen District), Hongqi Town (Jinwan District), the Gaolan Port Economic Zone, and the northern part of Hengqin Town, with peak deformation rates reaching 117 mm/y. Key drivers of ground deformation in Zhuhai include NDVI, groundwater extraction intensity, and soft soil thickness. The application of the MGWR model, with an R-sq value of 0.910, outperformed both the global regression model ordinary least squares (OLS), with an R-sq value of 0.722, and the local regression model geographically weighted regression (GWR), with an R-sq value of 0.770, in identifying driving forces. This study can provide valuable insights for government policies aimed at mitigating the disaster risks associated with urban ground deformation.

The Onset, Middle, and Climax of Precursory Hydrothermal Intrusion of the 2018 Phreatic Eruption at Kusatsu‐Shirane Volcano

AbstractTriggering intrusions of phreatic eruptions are often observed as seismic and ground deformation signals on a time scale of minutes. The current understanding of hydrothermal intrusions still needs improvement to obtain insight into the eruption scale from the observables. We examine local geophysical data from the precursory hydrothermal intrusion of the 2018 phreatic eruption of Kusatsu‐Shirane volcano. To achieve an integrated intrusion model, we divide analyzing time window into the onset, middle, and climax. Focusing on the transient response of tilt data for the sudden pressurization, we estimate a vertical tensile opening (1.7 × 103 m3/s in 40 s) at 1.1 km depth for the intrusion onset. Pressurization can represent the start of vapourization. Very long period (VLP, 0.033–0.1 Hz) seismic signals are adopted to constrain the middle and climax phases. We obtained two sequential semi‐horizontal tensile crack oscillation sources with peak volume changes of 3.6 × 104–1.9 × 105 m3 at 0.3–0.6 km depths. The second VLP source acted as a final trigger of the eruption to cause depressurization in the shallow portion of the intruded region, which is constrained as having reached 0.1 km depth by surface deformation. Simultaneously, we find another depressurization originated from depth in the climax due to a decrease in the hydrothermal intrusion rate. Through comparison with the 2014 Ontake phreatic eruption, the total inflation volume may correlate with eruption scales. Intruded hydrothermal fluid and local structure characteristics also may have to be considered to evaluate the eruptions scales from inferred signal source intensity.

Pre‐Eruptive Outgassing and Pressurization, and Post‐Fragmentation Bubble Nucleation, Recorded by Vesicles in Breadcrust Bombs From Vulcanian Activity at Guagua Pichincha Volcano, Ecuador

AbstractBreadcrust bombs formed during Vulcanian eruptions are assumed to originate from the shallow plug or dome. Their rim to core texture reflects the competition between cooling and degassing timescales, which results in a dense crust with isolated vesicles contrasting with a highly vesicular vesicle network in the interior. Due to relatively fast quenching, the crust can shed light on pre‐ and syn‐eruptive conditions prior to or during fragmentation, whereas the interior allows us to explore post‐fragmentation vesiculation. Investigation of pre‐ to post‐fragmentation processes in breadcrust bombs from the 1999 Vulcanian activity at Guagua Pichincha, Ecuador, via 2D and 3D textural analysis reveals a complex vesiculation history, with multiple, spatially localized nucleation and growth events. Large vesicles (Type 1), present in low number density in the crust, are interpreted as pre‐eruptive bubbles formed by outgassing and collapse of a permeable bubble network during ascent or stalling in the plug. Haloes of small, syn‐fragmentation vesicles (Type 2), distributed about large vesicles, are formed by pressurization and enrichment of volatiles in these haloes. The nature of the pressurization process in the plug is discussed in light of seismicity and ground deformation signals, and previous textural and chemical studies. A third population (Type 3) of post‐fragmentation small vesicles appears in the interior of the bomb, and growth and coalescence of Type 2 and 3 vesicles causes the transition from isolated to interconnected bubble network in the interior. We model the evolution of viscosity, bubble growth rate, diffusion timescales, bubble radius and porosity during fragmentation and cooling. These models reveal that thermal quenching dominates in the crust whereas the interior undergoes a viscosity quench caused by degassing, and that the transition from crust to interior corresponds to the onset of percolation and development of permeability in the bubble network.

Wavelet-like denoising of GNSS data through machine learning. Application to the time series of the Campi Flegrei volcanic area (Southern Italy)

The great potential of the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) in monitoring ground deformation is widely recognized. As with other geophysical data, GNSS time series can be significantly noisy, hiding elusive ground deformation signals. Several denoising techniques have been proposed to improve the signal-to-noise ratio over the years. One of the most effective denoising techniques has been proved to be multi-resolution decomposition through the discrete wavelet transform. However, wavelet analysis requires long data sets to be effective, as well as long computation times, that hinder its use as a real or near real-time monitoring tool. We propose training by a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) to perform the equivalent of wavelet analysis to overcome these limitations. Once trained, the CNN model provides answers within seconds, making it feasible as a real-time data analysis tool. Our Machine Learning algorithm is tested on daily GNSS time series collected in the Campi Flegrei caldera (Southern Italy), which is a highly volcanic risk area. Without significant gaps, the retrieved RMSE and R2 values vary in the ranges 0.65–0.98 and 0.06–0.52 cm, respectively. These results are encouraging, as they hint at the possibility of applying this methodology in more effective real-time monitoring solutions for active volcanoes.

Weather model based atmospheric corrections of Sentinel-1 InSAR deformation data at Turkish volcanoes

SUMMARYOne of the main constraints on the use of satellite radar data for monitoring natural hazards is the existence of atmospheric signals. In particular, volcanic deformation can be difficult to identify because atmospheric phase delays can mask or even mimic ground deformation signals. Eliminating atmospheric signals is particularly crucial for high-relief volcanoes such as Ağrı, Tendürek, Acigöl, Göllüdağ and Hasandağ in the Eastern and Central Anatolia. To overcome the atmospheric effects, we use high-resolution ECMWF weather models coupled with an empirical phase-elevation approach for correcting Sentinel-1 interferograms. We apply these methods to two areas of Turkey, the first of which covers three volcanoes in Central Anatolia (Acigöl, Göllüdağ, Hasandağ) between January 2016 and December 2018 and the second covers two volcanoes in Eastern Anatolia (Ağrı, Tendürek) between September 2016 and December 2018. The reduction in standard deviation (quality factor) is calculated for both ascending and descending tracks and the atmospheric corrections are found to perform better on descending interferograms in both cases. Then, we use a least-squares approach to produce a time-series. For Central Anatolia, we used 416 ascending and 415 descending interferograms to create 144 and 145 cumulative displacement maps, respectively, and for Eastern Anatolia, we used 390 ascending and 380 descending interferograms to produce 137 and 130 cumulative displacement maps, respectively. We find that the temporal standard deviation before atmospheric corrections ranges between 0.9 and 3.7 cm for the five volcanoes in the region and is consistently higher on ascending track data, which is acquired at the end of the day when solar heating is greatest. Atmospheric correction reduces the standard deviation to 0.5–2.5 cm. Residual signals might be due to the ice-cap at Ağrı and agriculture near Acigöl. We conclude that these volcanoes did not experience significant magmatic deformation during this time period, despite the apparent signals visible in individual uncorrected interferograms. We demonstrate that atmospheric corrections are vital when using InSAR for monitoring the deformation of high-relief volcanoes in arid continental climates such as Turkey.

Routine Processing and Automatic Detection of Volcanic Ground Deformation Using Sentinel-1 InSAR Data: Insights from African Volcanoes

Since the launch of Sentinel-1 mission, automated processing systems have been developed for near real-time monitoring of ground deformation signals. Here, we perform a regional analysis of 5 years over 64 volcanic centres located along the East African Rift System (EARS). We show that the correction of atmospheric signals for the arid and low-elevation EARS volcanoes is less important than for other volcanic environments. We find that the amplitude of the cumulative displacements exceeds three times the temporal noise of the time series (3σ) for 16 of the 64 volcanoes, which includes previously reported deformation signals, and two new ones at Paka and Silali volcanoes. From a 5-year times series, uncertainties in rates of deformation are ∼0.1 cm/yr, whereas uncertainties associated with the choice of reference pixel are typically 0.3–0.6 cm/yr. We fit the time series using simple functional forms and classify seven of the volcano time series as ‘linear’, six as ‘sigmoidal’ and three as ‘hybrid’, enabling us to discriminate between steady deformation and short-term pulses of deformation. This study provides a framework for routine volcano monitoring using InSAR on a continental scale. Here, we focus on Sentinel-1 data from the EARS, but the framework could be expanded to include other satellite systems or global coverage.

Numerical investigation of the roles of gravel fabric on composite strata deformation induced by thrust faulting

In historical earthquakes, fault ruptures have caused significant ground deformation and infrastructure damage. Because the occurrences of earthquakes are hard to predict, it is critical to assess the area influenced by fault propagation for disaster resistance. Based on trench excavations in active fault zones, earthquake faults propagated through the composite strata with gravel deposits are common. However, the stratigraphy change of the overburden strata and the non-spherical granular particles of the gravel deposit are rarely considered in most case studies. This study proposes a procedure that utilizes digital image analysis and discrete element modeling to estimate the composite strata deformation induced by thrust faulting. The procedure is demonstrated through a series of small-scale sandbox modeling and a case study of the Chushan excavation site in Taiwan. The gravel fabric, including gravel volumetric content, aspect ratio and initial long-axis orientation, are considered in the parametric study as well as the configuration of the strata composition. Simulations show that fault propagation restricts in the overburden because the faulting-induced kinematic energy is mostly dissipated by clast rotation, resulting in a lower fault extended distance and a wider tri-shear zone. The rotation of the gravels shows good agreement with the range of the tri-shear zone, indicating that the long-axis orientations of gravels can be an indicator to interpret the faulting history. Overall, it is feasible to construct a reasonable numerical model for assessing fault rupture-composite strata interaction (FR-CSI) once the outcrop photo data are available. The proposed procedure is useful for efficient and reliable scenario modeling regarding earthquake hazard mitigation.

Data analysis of the unsteadily accelerating GPS and seismic records at Campi Flegrei caldera from 2000 to 2020

Ongoing resurgence affects Campi Flegrei caldera (Italy) via bradyseism, i.e. a series of ground deformation episodes accompanied by increases in shallow seismicity. In this study, we perform a mathematical analysis of the GPS and seismic data in the instrumental catalogs from 2000 to 2020, and a comparison of them to the preceding data from 1983 to 1999. We clearly identify and characterize two overlying trends, i.e. a decennial-like acceleration and cyclic oscillations with various periods. In particular, we show that all the signals have been accelerating since 2005, and 90–97% of their increase has occurred since 2011, 40–80% since 2018. Nevertheless, the seismic and ground deformation signals evolved differently—the seismic count increased faster than the GPS data since 2011, and even more so since 2015, growing faster than an exponential function The ground deformation has a linearized rate slope, i.e. acceleration, of 0.6 cm/yr2 and 0.3 cm/yr2 from 2000 to 2020, respectively for the vertical (RITE GPS) and the horizontal (ACAE GPS) components. In addition, all annual rates show alternating speed-ups and slow-downs, consistent between the signals. We find seven major rate maxima since 2000, one every 2.8–3.5 years, with secondary maxima at fractions of the intervals. A cycle with longer period of 6.5–9 years is also identified. Finally, we apply the probabilistic failure forecast method, a nonlinear regression that calculates the theoretical time limit of the signals going to infinity (interpreted here as a critical state potentially reached by the volcano), conditional on the continuation of the observed nonlinear accelerations. Since 2000, we perform a retrospective analysis of the temporal evolution of these forecasts which highlight the periods of more intense acceleration. The failure forecast method applied on the seismic count from 2001 to 2020 produces upper time limits of [0, 3, 11] years (corresponding to the 5th, 50th and 95th percentiles, respectively), significantly shorter than those based on the GPS data, e.g. [0, 6, 21] years. Such estimates, only valid under the model assumption of continuation of the ongoing decennial-like acceleration, warn to keep the guard up on the future evolution of Campi Flegrei caldera.

Numerical Study on Stratigraphic and Structural Deformation Patterns Considering Surface Load with Pile-Beam-Arch Method Construction

Due to soil disturbance during the construction of metro stations, the initial stress of the stratum is modified, leading to ground settlement within a particular range, fracturing the surrounding buildings and even causing significant ground deformation and building collapse. This paper employed the Pile-Beam-Arch method to assemble the Daguanying Station of Beijing Metro Line 7 as the engineering background. The numerical calculation method was used to study the regulations of ground settlement and structural deformation throughout the construction stage. Meanwhile, the effect of surface loading was taken into account and surface settlement control strategies were suggested. Finally, the Stochastic medium theory was used to predict surface settlement. It was evident from the study’s findings that the pilot tunnels excavation and the arches installation accounted for 67% and 23.1% of the total surface settlement, respectively, and produced the most surface settlement. Surface settlement can be significantly reduced by utilizing grouting reinforcement technology and the pilot tunnels excavation approach of “upper first, then lower and side first, then middle”. The structure was much less stressed during the pre-construction stage, with the maximum principal stress ranging from 1 to 5 MPa; after construction was finalized, the maximum principal stress reached 14.203 MPa, concentrating mostly in the middle column part, which was the consequence of the combined action of the upper load and the lower soil uplift. Additionally, there was a linear relationship between the surface load and ground settlement. The bottom slab and the middle column were situated where the structure’s most unfavorable components were concentrated. The conclusions of the surface settlement prediction demonstrated that there were discrepancies between the theoretical calculation and the simulated; thus, the prediction results were more conservative. The study results can serve as a reference for construction sites.

The Arkalochori Mw = 5.9 Earthquake of 27 September 2021 Inside the Heraklion Basin: A Shallow, Blind Rupture Event Highlighting the Orthogonal Extension of Central Crete

A strong, shallow earthquake occurred near Heraklion (Crete, Greece) on 27 September 2021. The earthquake produced significant ground deformation in the vicinity of Arkalochori village but without any evidence for surface ruptures of primary origin. We used geodetic (InSAR and GNSS) data to map motions of the Earth’s surface that occurred during and shortly after the earthquake. A 14 cm subsidence of the GNSS station ARKL and a maximum of 19 cm distance from the SAR satellite were recorded. The measured surface displacements were used to constrain the rupture geometry and slip distribution at depth. Our best-fitting inversion model suggests that the rupture occurred on a 13 km-long planar normal fault striking N195° E dipping 55° to the northwest, with major slip occurring to the east and updip of the hypocentre. The fault tip is located 1.2 km beneath the surface. The maximum coseismic slip occurred in the uppermost crust, in the depth interval of 4–6 km. A decrease in the fault offsets toward the Earth’s surface is likely caused by an increased frictional resistance of the shallow layers to rapid coseismic slip. Satellite observations made in the first month after the earthquake detected no post-seismic deformation (i.e., below one fringe or 2.8 cm). The seismic fault may be identified with the Avli (Lagouta) segment of the NNE-SSW striking, west-dipping, 23 km-long neotectonic Kastelli Fault Zone (KFZ). Part of the rupture occurred along the Kastelli segment, indicating a fault segment linkage and a history of overlapping ruptures along KFZ. Based on geological data and footwall topography we estimate an average slip rate between 0.17–0.26 mm/yr for the KFZ. The Arkalochori earthquake is a paradigm example for the on-going extension of Heraklion basin (central Crete) in the WNW-ESE direction, which is almost orthogonal to the E-W Messara graben and other active faults along the south coast of Crete.

The significance of the 1971 flank eruption of Etna from volcanological and historic viewpoints

The 1971 eruption represents a benchmark in the recent history of Etna volcano. From a volcanological point of view, this eruption was characterised by complex intrusive dynamics associated with significant ground deformation that induced the activation of the Moscarello seismogenic fault and the formation of a new summit crater: the Southeast Crater. At the same time, the 1971 event marks an important change in the eruptive style and composition of the magma towards products richer in K. It is no coincidence that, over the next fifty years, there would be an increase in the frequency of summit and flank eruptions and associated output rate. From an historical viewpoint, the eruptive event of 1971 was the first important flank eruption studied by the International Institute of Volcanology: the analysis of the scientific articles on this activity reveals a greater multidisciplinary content in the descriptions and explanations of volcanic activity. Particularly important were the collaborations of British and French research groups that, together with their Italian colleagues, succeeded in giving a complete picture of the eruption and describing the state of knowledge on the Sicilian volcano. The multidisciplinary methodology used to study this eruption is still valid today.

Search for Infrasound Signals in InSight Data Using Coupled Pressure/Ground Deformation Methods

ABSTRACT The unprecedented quality and sampling rate of seismometer and pressure sensors of the InSight Mars mission allow us to investigate infrasound through its pressure and ground deformation signals. This study focuses on compliance effects induced by acoustic waves propagating almost horizontally close to the surface. The compliance of acoustic waves is first estimated using the compliance estimates from pressure perturbations moving at wind speed. Then, a marker of compliance events is used to detect events of ground deformation induced by pressure variations, in three frequency bands from 0.4 to 3.2 Hz, from InSight sol 180 to 690. Additional selection criteria are imposed on the detected events to focus on acoustic waves and to remove various noise sources (e.g., wind effects or seismometer artifacts). After an automated selection, the visual inspection of the records allows us to validate two infrasound candidates that cannot be related to pressure perturbations moving at wind speed nor to known noise sources. For our highest quality infrasound candidate, the relation between this event and a convective vortex occuring 10 s later is tested. The azimuth of the vortex position at the time of infrasound detection is not consistent with the arrival azimuth of the suspected infrasound inferred from the polarization of seismometer records, thus the link between these two phenomena cannot be demonstrated. Further investigations would require a better understanding of wind-related noise impacting InSight sensors and of the effects of lateral variations of subsurface mechanical properties on the ground deformations induced by atmospheric pressure variations.

Characterizing the Topographic Changes and Land Subsidence Associated with the Mountain Excavation and City Construction on the Chinese Loess Plateau

A mega project, Mountain Excavation and City Construction (MECC), was launched in the hilly and gully region of the Chinese Loess Plateau in 2012, in order to address the shortage of available land and create new flat land for urban construction. However, large-scale land creation and urban expansion significantly alters the local geological environment, leading to severe ground deformation. This study investigated the topographic changes, ground deformation, and their interactions due to the MECC project in the Yan’an New District (YND). First, new surface elevations were generated using ZiYuan-3 (ZY-3) stereo images acquired after the construction in order to map the local topographic changes and the fill thickness associated with the MECC project. Then, the interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) time series and 32 Sentinel-1A images were used to assess the spatial patterns of the ground deformation in the YND during the postconstruction period (2017–2018). By combining the InSAR-derived results and topographic change features, the relationship between the ground deformation and large-scale land creation was further analyzed. The results indicated that the MECC project in the YND has created over 22 km2 of flat land, including 10.8 km2 of filled area, with a maximum fill thickness of ~110 m. Significant uneven ground deformation was detected in the land-creation area, with a maximum subsidence rate of approximately 121 mm/year, which was consistent with the field survey. The strong correlation between the observed subsidence patterns and the land creation project suggested that this recorded uneven subsidence was primarily related to the spatial distribution of the filling works, along with the changes in the thickness and geotechnical properties of the filled loess; moreover, rapid urbanization, such as road construction, can accelerate the subsidence process. These findings can guide improvements in urban planning and the mitigation of geohazards in regions experiencing large-scale land construction.

Magmatic Processes in the East African Rift System: Insights From a 2015–2020 Sentinel‐1 InSAR Survey

AbstractThe East African Rift System (EARS) is composed of around 78 Holocene volcanoes, but relatively little is known about their past and present activity. This lack of information makes it difficult to understand their eruptive cycles, their roles in continental rifting and the threat they pose to the population. Although previous InSAR surveys (1990–2010) showed sign of unrest, the information about the dynamics of the magmatic systems remained limited by low temporal resolution and gaps in the data set. The Sentinel‐1 SAR mission provides open‐access acquisitions every 12 days in Africa and has the potential to produce long‐duration time series for studying volcanic ground deformation at regional scale. Here, we use Sentinel‐1 data to provide InSAR time series along the EARS for the period 2015–2020. We detect 18 ground deformation signals on 14 volcanoes, of which six are located in Afar, six in the Main Ethiopian Rift, and two in the Kenya‐Tanzanian Rift. We detected new episodes of uplift at Tullu Moje (2016) and Suswa (mid‐2018), and enigmatic long‐lived subsidence signals at Gada Ale and Kone. Subsidence signals are related to a variety of mechanisms including the posteruptive evolution of magma reservoirs (e.g., Alu‐Dallafila), the compaction of lava flows (e.g., Nabro), and pore‐pressure changes related to geothermal or hydrothermal activity (e.g., Olkaria). Our results show that ∼20% of the Holocene volcanoes in the EARS deformed during this 5‐years snapshot and demonstrate the diversity of processes occurring.

Development of an Imagewise Stacking Method to Mitigate Atmospheric Effect With an Application to Lianyan Railway

Much attention has been paid to the subsidence monitoring of large-scale man-made linear features, which are usually characterized by long-distance, large-scale, and nonuniform distribution. The multitemporal interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) technique can provide ground deformation maps for a large area with high spatial resolution and millimeter precision at low costs. The technique overcomes the limitations of ground-based survey instruments. However, the variable atmospheric turbulent component in flat areas has impacts on InSAR detection capability, especially over low-amplitude quasi-stable deformation areas. We propose an imagewise stacking method, which can improve the InSAR time-series analysis by reducing residual noise while retaining the ground deformation signal. We integrate persistent scatterer and distributed scatterer in our processing strategy and conduct a tentative test on the roadbed subsidence monitoring of the Lianyan high-speed railway using 47 medium-resolution Sentinel-1 images. Comparing the InSAR displacement time series and the results with a continuous BeiDou navigation satellite system network, the standard deviation of 3.3 mm and the mean absolute error of 2.2 mm are obtained. The proposed method reduced the above two error measures by 66.3% and 65.6%, respectively, compared with the spatiotemporal filtering. Moreover, the analysis of the spatiotemporal characteristics of the railway deformations also tells that the railway under study is stable.

Ionospheric Phase Compensation for InSAR Measurements Based on the Faraday Rotation Inversion Method.

The ionospheric error can significantly affect the synthetic aperture radar (SAR) signals, particularly in the case of L band and lower frequency SAR systems. The ionospheric distortions are mixed with terrain and ground deformation signals, lowering the precision of the interferometric measurements. Moreover, it is often difficult to detect the small-scale ionospheric structure due to its rapid changes and may have more influence on ionospheric phase compensation for InSAR measurements. In this paper, we present a Faraday rotation (FR) inversion method and corresponding procedure to compensate the ionospheric error for SAR interferograms and to detect the variations of small-scale ionospheric disturbances. This method retrieves the absolute total electron content (TEC) based on the FR estimation and corrects the ionospheric error for synthetic aperture radar interferometry (InSAR) measurements by transforming the differential TEC into the ionospheric phase. In two selected study cases, located in high latitude and equatorial regions where ionospheric disturbances occur frequently, we test the method using the Phased Array L-band Synthetic Aperture Radar (PALSAR) full-polarimetric SAR images. Our results show that the proposed procedure can effectively compensate the ionospheric phase. In order to validate the results, we present the results of ionospheric phase compensation based on the split-spectrum method as a comparison to the proposed method. To analyze the ability of our proposed method in detecting small-scale ionospheric disturbances, TEC derived from FR estimation are also compared with those derived from the global ionosphere maps (GIM). Our research provides a robust choice for the correction of ionospheric error in SAR interferograms. It also provides a powerful tool to measure small-scale ionospheric structure.

Hydro-mechanical coupling in the shallow crust – Insight from groundwater level and satellite radar imagery in a mining area

The hydro-mechanical coupling in the shallow crust influences both geological processes such as earthquakes and landslides and anthropogenic processes such as induced seismicity and mining-produced subsidence. Yet there have been few direct field observation to illustrate how the hydraulic and the mechanical processes are coupled. In this study we use continuous water level data from wells and ground deformation data over a large area (>71 km2) of active coal mining in NW China to examine hydro-mechanical coupling in the shallow crust. We present detailed analysis of the tidal response of groundwater and surface deformation from radar remote sensing in an actively and intensely mined area, and we show that the phase shift of the tidal response of water level may respond significantly to mining disturbances when the excavation workface was many hundred meters to >1 km away, whereas significant ground deformation and water-level drops occurred only when the workface came much closer to the wells. Water level and tidal response recovered after the workface moved away but the subsidence is permanent. We suggest that the permeability of the mined crust may be controlled by narrow conductive fractures that open and close in response to deviatoric stresses, while large ground deformation and water-level drops may be controlled by larger fractures and faulting. One possibility is the release of the deviatoric stresses in the wall rocks by faulting, may have allowed the conductive fractures to close and the water level and its tidal response to recover after the workface moved away. Another possible mechanism is the mobilization of precipitates in clogged fractures by dynamic waves associated with mining-induced seismicity, which may change the permeability of fractures. More studies are warranted for a better understanding of the hydro-mechanical coupling during longwall mining.

Surface displacement revealed by L-band InSAR analysis in the Mayya area, Central Yakutia, underlain by continuous permafrost

Recent increases in global temperature have stimulated permafrost degradation associated with landform deformation caused by the melting of excess ground ice (thermokarst). Central Yakutia is underlain by ice-rich continuous permafrost, and there are complicated permafrost-related features in forested and deforested areas. This situation makes thermokarst monitoring necessary over a wide area to achieve a better understanding of its dynamics. As a case study, we applied L-band InSAR analysis to map surface subsidence due to thermokarst in this area and to demonstrate the suitability of L-band SAR for such monitoring. Our results show that InSAR detected subsidence/uplift signals in deforested areas and alasses; whereas, there were few ground deformation signals in forested areas with middle coherence. The InSAR stacking process, including both seasonal and inter-annual displacements, showed subsidence in deforested areas during 2007–2010 and 2015–2018, in the range of 0.5–3 cm yr−1. We also estimated the inter-annual subsidence to be up to 2 cm yr−1 during 2015–2018, using InSAR pairs that spanned the same seasonal interval but in different years. The magnitude of subsidence and the spatial patterns are qualitatively reasonable as thermokarst subsidence compared to observations using field surveys and high-resolution optical images. L-band InSAR was effective in maintaining coherence over a long period for a partially forested thermokarst-affected area, which resulted in deriving the inter-annual subsidence by the stacking using four interferograms. The advantage of the persistent coherence in L-band InSAR is crucial to better understand thermokarst processes in permafrost regions.

LAND DEFORMATION MONITORING USING D-INSAR TECHNIQUE DURING LOMBOK EARTHQUAKE OBSERVED BY SENTINEL-1A/B

The significant ground deformation occurred at Lombok Island due to the large scale of series Earthquake in shallow depth from July to August 2018. Extract the information of ground deformation on the study area, Differential Interferometry Synthetic Aperture Radar (D-InSAR) technique was applied. The observation supported by SAR satellite data of Sentinel-1A/B (C-band) 5.5 GHz provided by the European Space Agency (ESA). The satellite direction observation is from ascending and descending orbit with vertical transmit and vertical received (VV) polarization. The data acquisition is taken from July 2018 to August 2018 in three pairs before and after the earthquake hit the Lombok Island. Three zones have significant land deformation during the Lombok earthquake in 2018 namely zone A, zone B and zone C with 16 cm, 25.2 cm, and 28 cm uplift in the line of sight (LOS), respectively. The value carried out by comparing the two-close time acquisition before and after the earthquake.
