Diallel Analysis of Wheat Resistance to Fusarium Head Blight and Mycotoxin Accumulation under Conditions of Artificial Inoculation and Natural Infection.

Breeding resistant wheat cultivars to Fusarium head blight (FHB), caused by Fusarium spp., is the best method for controlling the disease. The aim of this study was to estimate general combining ability (GCA) and specific combining ability (SCA) for FHB resistance in a set of eight genetically diverse winter wheat cultivars to identify potential donors of FHB resistance for crossing. FHB resistance of parents and F1 crosses produced by the half diallel scheme was evaluated under the conditions of artificial inoculation with F. graminearum and natural infection. Four FHB related traits were assessed: visual rating index (VRI), Fusarium damaged kernels (FDK), and deoxynivalenol and zearalenone content in the harvested grain samples. Significant GCA effects for FHB resistance were observed for the parental cultivars with high FHB resistance for all studied FHB resistance related traits. The significant SCA and mid-parent heterosis effects for FHB resistance were rare under both artificial inoculation and natural infection conditions and involved crosses between parents with low FHB resistance. A significant negative correlation between grain yield under natural conditions and VRI (r = -0.43) and FDK (r = -0.47) under conditions of artificial inoculation was observed in the set of the studied F1 crosses. Some crosses showed high yield and high FHB resistance, indicating that breeding of FHB resistant genotypes could be performed without yield penalty. These crosses involved resistant cultivars with significant GCA effects for FHB resistance indicating that that they could be used as good donors of FHB resistance.

Genetic Potential of Newly Developed Maize Hybrids under Different Water-Availability Conditions in an Arid Environment.

Drought is a crucial environmental stress that tremendously impacts maize production, particularly under abrupt climate changes. Consequently, breeding drought-tolerant and high-yielding maize hybrids has become decisive in sustaining its production and ensuring global food security under the global fast-growing population. The present study aimed to explore drought tolerance and agronomic performance of newly developed maize inbred lines and their hybrids. Ten newly developed maize inbred lines were crossed with two high-yielding testers using a line × tester mating design. The developed twenty hybrids alongside two high-yielding commercial hybrids were evaluated under water-deficit (5411 m3/ha) and well-watered (7990 m3/ha) conditions in dry summer climate conditions. Highly significant variations were detected among the evaluated hybrids for all studied agronomic traits under well-watered and water-deficit conditions. The inbred lines L10 and L6 were particularly notable, demonstrating the most significant negative general combining ability (GCA) effects for earliness, which is crucial for stress avoidance in both environmental settings. Inbred lines L11, L7, L6, and L1 also showed the highest positive and most significant GCA effects for key yield traits, indicating their potential as parents in breeding programs. The crosses L-10×T-1 and L-6×T-2 were outstanding for their heterotic effects on earliness in days to tasseling and silking. Similarly, the crosses L-4×T-2 and L-1×T-1 excelled in plant and ear heights under both irrigation regimes. The hybrids L-1×T-2 and L-7×T-1 demonstrated superior heterosis for chlorophyll content, number of rows per ear, and overall grain yield. Additionally, hybrids L-11×T-1 and L-11×T-2 exhibited remarkable heterotic effects for the number of grains per row, number of rows per ear, 100-kernel weight, and grain yield, highlighting their potential in breeding for productivity. Based on drought tolerance indices and cluster analysis, the cross combinations L-11×T-1, L-11×T-2, L-7×T-1, and L-1×T-2 were classified as the most drought-tolerant crosses. The principal component analysis highlighted traits such as days to tasseling, days to silking, chlorophyll content, plant height, ear height, number of grains per row, number of rows per ear, and 100-kernel weight can be taken as selection criteria for improving grain yield in maize breeding programs under limited water conditions. Based on the summarized results, the identified genetic materials could be considered promising under both conditions and hold potential for future breeding programs.

The combining ability of extra-early maturing quality protein maize (Zea mays) inbred lines and the performance of their hybrids in Striga-infested and low-nitrogen environments

Maize production in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) faces challenges due to the damage caused by the parasitic weed, Striga hermonthica (Del.) Benths and low soil nitrogen. To address these constraints and improve food security and nutrition, this study assessed the combining ability of 47 inbred lines and four testers, grouped them into heterotic groups, identified effective testers, and determined the stability of the lines in hybrid combinations under contrasting research conditions. The study was conducted at Mokwa and Abuja during the 2019 and 2020 growing seasons. One hundred and ninety-six hybrids comprising 188 testcrosses, 6 hybrids derived by intermating the four testers, and two commercial checks were evaluated using a 14 × 14 lattice design with two replicates. Results revealed that under Striga infestation, the best quality protein maize (QPM) hybrid, TZEEQI 468 × TZEEQI 321, outyielded the best check, TZEEQI 342 × TZEEQI 7, by 24%. Under low-N, QPM hybrid, TZEEQI 515 × TZEEQI 321 outyielded the best check, TZEEQI 507 × TZEEQI 7 by 11% while under optimal conditions the best QPM hybrid, TZEEQI 506 × TZEEQI 321 outyielded the best check, TZEEQI 342 × TZEEQI 7 by 2%. General combining ability (GCA) and specific combining ability (SCA) significantly influenced grain yield and other measured traits across the test environments. These indicated the importance of both additive and non-additive genetic variances in trait inheritance. GCA was more important than SCA for grain yield and most traits in contrasting environments. Four inbred lines had significant and positive GCA effects for grain yield under Striga-infested conditions, while three lines had similar GCA effects under low-nitrogen conditions. These lines demonstrated outstanding potential for developing Striga-resistant and low-nitrogen-tolerant hybrids. The study identified four heterotic groups using the heterotic grouping method based on the general combining ability of multiple traits (HGCMAT). Inbred lines TZEEQI 490 and TZEEQI 460 were identified as testers. The QPM hybrid TZEEQI 515 × TZEEQI 321 exhibited outstanding yield and stability across contrasting environments, highlighting the need for extensive on-farm trials to confirm its superiority and potential for commercialization in SSA.

Combining Ability and Heterosis among Bottle Gourd [Lagenaria siceraria (Molina) Standl.] Selections for Yield and Related Traits under Drought-Stressed and Non-Stressed Conditions

Bottle gourd [Lagenaria siceraria (Molina) Standl.] is cultivated for multiple utilities, including as a leafy vegetable, for fresh and dried fruits and seeds. It is an under-researched and -utilized crop, and modern varieties are yet to be developed and deployed in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). There is a dire need for pre-breeding and breeding of bottle gourds for commercialization in SSA. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the combining ability and heterosis among selected genotypes of bottle gourd for fruit yield and related traits under drought-stressed and non-stressed conditions to select the best parents and hybrids. Eight preliminarily selected and contrasting parents with drought tolerance were crossed using a half-diallel mating design. The 8 parents and 28 crosses were evaluated under non-stressed (NS) and drought-stressed (DS) conditions across two growing seasons (2020/21 and 2021/22) using a 6 × 6 alpha lattice design with three replicates. Data were collected on fruit yield and related traits and subjected to analysis of variance, combining ability and heterosis analyses. Significant (p < 0.05) specific combining ability (SCA) and general combining ability (GCA) effects were computed for fruit yield per plant (FYPP). The SCA × environment and GCA × environment interaction effects were highly significant (p < 0.001) for FYPP and SYPP. The results suggest that genetic effects were affected by the test environment. Parental genotypes BG-58 and GC recorded positive and significant GCA effects for FYPP under the DS condition, whereas GC recorded positive and significant GCA effects for FYPP under the NS condition. The two genotypes are ideal breeding parents for population development to select genotypes with high fruit and seed yields. Crosses BG-27 × BG-79, BG-79 × BG-52, BG-79 × BG-70, BG-80 × BG-70, BG-80 × GC, and BG-70 × GC recorded high and positive SCA effects for FYPP and SYPP under DS condition. Crosses BG-81 × BG-52, BG-81 × GC, BG-27 × BG-79, BG-27 × GC, BG-79 × GC, BG-80 × BG-70, BG-81 × BG-58, BG-27 × BG-80, BG-27 × BG-58, BG-79 × BG-52, BG-52 × BG-58, BG-80 × BG-58, and BG-58 × BG-70 recorded high and positive SCA effects for FYPP and SYPP under NS condition. Crosses BG-80 × BG-58, BG-27 × BG-79, BG-79 × BG-52, BG-27 × BG-52, and BG-52 × BG-80 showed high and positive mid- and better-parent heterosis under DS condition for FYPP and SYPP. Crosses BG-27 × GC, BG-79 × GC, BG-27 × BG-58, and BG-27 × BG-79 showed high and positive mid- and better parent heterosis under NS condition for FYPP and SYPP. The newly selected families are recommended for multi-environment evaluation forrelease and commercialization in South Africa or similar agroecologies.

Genetic Potential of Tropically Adapted Exotic Maize (Zea mays L.) Heat-Tolerant Donor Lines in Sub-Tropical Breeding Programs

Breeding for heat stress tolerance became a priority in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), as projections are showing an increase in frequency, duration, and severity. In this study, 14 heat stress tolerant-donor lines (HSTDLs) sourced from CIMMYT-India (males) were crossed with 15 locally adapted elite lines (females) developed within the CIMMYT-Zimbabwe maize-breeding program using the North Carolina Design II mating scheme. The resultant 175 single crosses were evaluated alongside five commercial hybrids and adjacent to the trial of parental lines used in the crosses across two locations representing heat stress and optimal environments in Zimbabwe. The design II analysis showed significant (p < 0.01) general combining ability (GCA) effects for exotic heat donor lines and specific combining ability (SCA) effects on grain yield under heat stress, optimal conditions, and across locations; demonstrating additive and non-additive genetic inheritance of grain yield. High Baker’s ratios observed in this study indicate predominance of additive over non-additive gene effects. Three exotic HSTDLs, namely CAL14138, CAL152, and CAL1440, exhibited significant (p < 0.001) and positive GCA effects under heat stress conditions. The results imply that these exotic lines could serve as valuable genetic resources for introgression of heat tolerant alleles into local maize populations for accelerated yield genetic gains. Single crosses, DJ265-15 × VL1018816 and DJ267-9 × CAL1440, exhibited positive and significant (p < 0.01) and (p < 0.05) SCA effects for grain yield under heat stress conditions, respectively. These crosses can be used for further breeding and can contribute to grain yield performance under heat stress conditions. The exotic HSTDLs, CAL14138, CAL152, and VL109126 showed superior per se performance under heat, optimal conditions, and across environments. Overall data demonstrate the potential of exotic HSTDLs for improving the adaptation of maize to heat stress in sub-tropical breeding programs.

Combining ability of experimental maize lines for yield and aflatoxin in the southeastern United States

AbstractAflatoxin contamination of maize (Zea mays L.) grain presents risks to animal and human health and causes economic losses for growers, particularly in the southeastern United States. Development of hybrids with genetic resistance to aflatoxin contamination by Aspergillus flavus will reduce these risks. Two factorial crossing experiments were conducted to evaluate yield, agronomic traits, and aflatoxin in maize hybrids. In Experiment 1, 18 aflatoxin‐resistant (GT) lines were each crossed to six testers. In Experiment 2, 13 of the same lines were each crossed to 10 different testers. Each experiment was conducted for 2 years at Tifton, GA, and commercial check hybrids were included for comparison. Ears were inoculated with A. flavus isolate NRRL 3357 using the side‐needle technique 14 days after silking. Aflatoxin was quantified after harvest. Broad sense heritability for aflatoxin was low in Experiment 1 (H2 = 0.09) but was higher in Experiment 2 (H2 = 0.27). Heritability was moderate to high for plant height (H2 = 0.49–0.51) and days to silking (H2 = 0.54–0.72). Among experimental lines, GT1209 and GT1309 had consistent positive general combining ability (GCA) for yield, whereas GT1203 and GT1204 had consistent negative (favorable) GCA for aflatoxin. Significant GCA effects, both positive and negative, for aflatoxin were also observed among testers in both experiments. Some experimental hybrids had yields that were comparable to commercial checks while also having lower aflatoxin, demonstrating the progress made in improvement of both traits in maize hybrids adapted to the Southern United States.

Performance of testers with contrasting provitamin A content to evaluate provitamin A maize for resistance to Aspergillus flavus infection and aflatoxin production.

In sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), millions of people depend on maize as a primary staple. However, maize consumers in SSA may be exposed to malnutrition due to vitamin A deficiency (VAD) and unsafe aflatoxin levels, which can lead to serious economic and public health problems. Provitamin A (PVA) biofortified maize has been developed to alleviate VAD and may have additional benefits such as reduced aflatoxin contamination. In this study, maize inbred testers with contrasting PVA content in grain were used to identify inbred lines with desirable combining ability for breeding to enhance their level of resistance to aflatoxin. Kernels of 120 PVA hybrids generated by crossing 60 PVA inbreds with varying levels of PVA (5.4 to 51.7 µg/g) and two testers (low and high PVA, 14.4 and 25.0 µg/g, respectively) were inoculated with a highly toxigenic strain of Aspergillus flavus. Aflatoxin had a negative genetic correlation with β-carotene (r= -0.29, p < 0.0001) and PVA (r = -0.23, p < 0.0001), indicating that hybrids with high PVA content accumulated less aflatoxin than those with low to medium PVA. Both general combining ability (GCA) and specific combining ability (SCA) effects of lines and testers were significant for aflatoxin accumulation, number of spores, PVA, and other carotenoids, with additive gene actions playing a prominent role in regulating the mode of inheritance (GCA/SCA ratio >0.5). Eight inbreds had combined significant negative GCA effects for aflatoxin accumulation and spore count with significant positive GCA effects for PVA. Five testcrosses had combined significant negative SCA effects for aflatoxin with significant positive SCA effects for PVA. The high PVA tester had significant negative GCA effects for aflatoxin, lutein, β-carotene, and PVA. The study identified lines that can be used as parents to develop superior hybrids with high PVA and reduced aflatoxin accumulation. Overall, the results point out the importance of testers in maize breeding programs to develop materials that can contribute to controlling aflatoxin contamination and reducing VAD.

Diallel analysis of soybean (Glycine max L.) for biomass yield and root characteristics under low phosphorus soil conditions in Western Ethiopia.

Combining ability studies under low soil P conditions provides useful information on the inheritance of important traits to improve soybean for low P tolerance. The study aimed at determining the combining ability and gene actions of biomass yield and root traits in soybean under low phosphorus conditions. Nine parental genotypes and their 36 half diallel F2/F3 progenies were evaluated at two locations in Ethiopia on soils of low P availability. Highly significant (P<0.01) general combining ability (GCA) were found for all the traits and specific combining ability (SCA) for root dry weight and root fresh weight; while the SCA effects of all the rest of the traits were significant (P<0.05). The higher relative contributions of GCA over SCA revealed the preponderance of additive gene action in the inheritance of biomass yield, root dry weight, biomass dry weight, root volume, and root fresh weight with respective relative GCA:SCA contributions of (60.6, 39.4), (50.4, 49.6), (54.9, 45.1), (51.1, 48.9), and (52.1, 47.9); while the narrow-sense heritability was high (34.3%) only for biomass yield. Hardee-1 displayed significant (P<0.05) and positive GCA effects for most of the studied traits, and several crosses involving this parent showed superior performances. The traits i.e., biomass yield, biomass dry weight, root volume and root fresh weight showed highly (P<0.001) correlation with grain yield. Thus, breeding programs aiming to improve soybean for biomass yield and root traits under low-P condition can use Hardee-1 as a parent.

Genetic analyses of tropical maize lines under artificial infestation of fall armyworm and foliar diseases under optimum conditions.

Development and deployment of high-yielding maize varieties with native resistance to Fall armyworm (FAW), turcicum leaf blight (TLB), and gray leaf spot (GLS) infestation is critical for addressing the food insecurity in sub-Saharan Africa. The objectives of this study were to determine the inheritance of resistance for FAW, identity hybrids which in addition to FAW resistance, also show resistance to TLB and GLS, and investigate the usefulness of models based on general combining ability (GCA) and SNP markers in predicting the performance of new untested hybrids. Half-diallel mating scheme was used to generate 105 F1 hybrids from 15 parents and another 55 F1 hybrids from 11 parents. These were evaluated in two experiments, each with commercial checks in multiple locations under FAW artificial infestation and optimum management in Kenya. Under artificial FAW infestation, significant mean squares among hybrids and hybrids x environment were observed for most traits in both experiments, including at least one of the three assessments carried out for foliar damage caused by FAW. Interaction of GCA x environment and specific combining ability (SCA) x environment interactions were significant for all traits under FAW infestation and optimal conditions. Moderate to high heritability estimates were observed for GY under both management conditions. Correlation between GY and two of the three scorings (one and three weeks after infestation) for foliar damage caused by FAW were negative (-0.27 and -0.38) and significant. Positive and significant correlation (0.84) was observed between FAW-inflicted ear damage and the percentage of rotten ears. We identified many superior-performing hybrids compared to the best commercial checks for both GY and FAW resistance associated traits. Inbred lines CML312, CML567, CML488, DTPYC9-F46-1-2-1-2, CKDHL164288, CKDHL166062, and CLRCY039 had significant and positive GCA for GY (positive) and FAW resistance-associated traits (negative). CML567 was a parent in four of the top ten hybrids under optimum and FAW conditions. Both additive and non-additive gene action were important in the inheritance of FAW resistance. Both GCA and marker-based models showed high correlation with field performance, but marker-based models exhibited considerably higher correlation. The best performing hybrids identified in this study could be used as potential single cross testers in the development of three-way FAW resistance hybrids. Overall, our results provide insights that help breeders to design effective breeding strategies to develop FAW resistant hybrids that are high yielding under FAW and optimum conditions.

Combining ability studies of grain Fe and Zn contents of pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum L.) in West Africa.

Micronutrient malnutrition is a major challenge in Africa, where half a million children die each year because of lack of micronutrients in their food. Pearl millet is an important food and fodder crop for the people living in the Semi-Arid regions of West Africa. The present study was conducted to determine the stability, combining ability, and gene action conditions of the high level of Fe and Zn content in grain and selected agronomic traits. Hence, eight genotypes were selected based on the availability of grain Fe and Zn contents and crossed in a full diallel mating design. Progenies from an 8 × 8 diallel mating along with the parents were evaluated in an alpha lattice design with three replications in three locations for two years. The parental lines Jirani, LCIC 9702 and MORO, had positive significant general combining ability (GCA) effects for grain Fe concentration, while Jirani and MORO had positive significant GCA effects for grain Zn concentration. For the specific combining ability (SCA), among the 56 hybrids evaluated, only the hybrids LCIC 9702 × Jirani and MORO × ZANGO had positive significant SCA effects for grain Fe concentration across locations, and for grain Zn concentration, the hybrids Gamoji × MORO, LCIC 9702 × Jirani, and ICMV 167006 × Jirani had positive significant SCA effects. The reciprocal effects were significant for grain Zn concentration, grain yield, flowering time, plant height, test weight, and downy mildew incidence, suggesting that the choice of a female or male parent is critical in hybrid production. Grain Fe and Zn concentration, flowering time, plant height, panicle length, panicle girth, panicle compactness, and downy mildew incidence were found to be predominantly under additive gene action, while grain yield and test weight were predominantly under non-additive gene action. A highly positive correlation was found between grain Fe and Zn concentrations, which implies that improving grain Fe trait automatically improves the grain Zn content. The stability analysis revealed that the hybrid ICMV 167006 × Jirani was the most stable and high-yielding with a high level of grain Fe and Zn micronutrients.

Combining ability and heritability analysis of sweetpotato weevil resistance, root yield, and dry matter content in sweetpotato

Efficient breeding and selection of superior genotypes requires a comprehensive understanding of the genetics of traits. This study was aimed at establishing the general combining ability (GCA), specific combining ability (SCA), and heritability of sweetpotato weevil (Cylas spp.) resistance, storage root yield, and dry matter content in a sweetpotato multi-parental breeding population. A population of 1,896 F1 clones obtained from an 8 × 8 North Carolina II design cross was evaluated with its parents in the field at two sweetpotato weevil hotspots in Uganda, using an augmented row-column design. Clone roots were further evaluated in three rounds of a no-choice feeding laboratory bioassay. Significant GCA effects for parents and SCA effects for families were observed for most traits and all variance components were highly significant (p ≤ 0.001). Narrow-sense heritability estimates for weevil severity, storage root yield, and dry matter content were 0.35, 0.36, and 0.45, respectively. Parental genotypes with superior GCA for weevil resistance included “Mugande,” NASPOT 5, “Dimbuka-bukulula,” and “Wagabolige.” On the other hand, families that displayed the highest levels of resistance to weevils included “Wagabolige” × NASPOT 10 O, NASPOT 5 × “Dimbuka-bukulula,” “Mugande” × “Dimbuka-bukulula,” and NASPOT 11 × NASPOT 7. The moderate levels of narrow-sense heritability observed for the traits, coupled with the significant GCA and SCA effects, suggest that there is potential for their improvement through conventional breeding via hybridization and progeny selection and advancement. Although selection for weevil resistance may, to some extent, be challenging for breeders, efforts could be boosted through applying genomics-assisted breeding. Superior parents and families identified through this study could be deployed in further research involving the genetic improvement of these traits.

Selection for high yield and quality in half-diallel bread wheat F2 populations (Triticum aestivum L.) through heterosis and combining ability analysis

The study was carried out to evaluate the combining ability and heterosis of seven parents and their 21 half-diallel F2 populations for yield and quality traits during the 2013-14 season in the randomized complete block design with three replications. Significant differences were observed among the genotypes, GCA (general combining ability) and SCA (specific combining ability) effects for all traits, except spike length. The best combiner parents were identified as Esperia and Pehlivan for grain yield, and Flamura85, Aldane and Selimiye for quality traits because of significant GCA and per se performance. The ranges of best parent heterosis were -12.71 to 8.23% for plant height, -15.46 to 8.36% for spike length, -16.62 to 24.80% for number of grains per spike, -23.61 to 36.50% for grain weight per spike, -17.13 to 8.84% for harvest index and -44.26 to 15.83 for grain yield, -17.61 to 8.38% for thousand grain weight, -18.55 to 8.44% for wet gluten content, -33.80 to 24.78% for gluten index, -20.24 to 15.23% for Zeleny sedimentation value, -15.58 to 10.00% for quality index and -8.96 to 6.87 for grain protein content. The three (Slm/Phl, F85/Slm and F85/Esp) and seven (F85/Phl, Sb/Fs, Fs/Slm, Esp/Slm, Fs/Phl, Esp/Sb and Sb/Slm) of F2 populations are offered a good opportunity in base material for selection of potential because of significant SCA effects and best parent heterosis for grain yield and quality traits respectively.

Combining Ability of Drought-Tolerant Bread Wheat Genotypes for Agronomic and Physiological Traits

A combining-ability analysis is key to select desirable parents and progenies with enhanced response to selection under water-limited environments. The objective of this study was to determine combining ability for agronomic and physiological traits among distantly related drought-tolerant bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) genotypes under well-watered (WW) and terminal-drought (TD) conditions to determine their genetic merit for breeding. Ten heat- and drought-tolerant wheat genotypes were crossed in a half-diallel mating design to generate 45 F1s, which were evaluated under WW and TD moisture regimes in rainout shelter (RS) and greenhouse (GH) environments. The following agronomic traits were assessed: days to 50% maturity (DTM), plant height (PH), spike length (SL), number of productive tillers (TN), spikelets number per spike (SPS), number of grains per spike (GPS), grain yield (GY) and thousand-kernel weight (TKW); and physiological traits (stomatal conductance (SC) and chlorophyll content index (CCI)). Variances attributable to general combining ability (GCA) and specific combining ability (SCA) were significant (p &lt; 0.05) for GY, DTM, PH, SL, SPS, GPS, TKW and CCI. The parental genotypes LM72, LM81 and LM95 with positive and significant GCA effects on GY were selected to make crosses to develop high-yielding wheat genotypes for water-limited environments. Crosses LM71 × LM02, LM71 × LM81, LM82 × LM02, LM82 × LM81, LM22 × LM100, LM22 × LM81 and LM95 × LM22 were selected with positive and significant SCA effects for GY. The selected parents and crosses are valuable genetic resources for breeding and genetic advancement.

STUDY ON COMBINING ABILITY FOR YIELD AND YIELD CONTRIBUTING TRAITS IN WATER STRESS TOLERANT GENOTYPES OF TOMATO (SOLANUM LYCOPERSICUM L.)

The experiment was conducted to develop tomato hybrids by identifying parental lines with estimation of good combining ability effects and their variances through line x tester analysis of 44 genotypes including 32 F1 cross combinations using 12 parents after selfing (8 lines and 4 testers). The genotypes were evaluated for the yield and contributing traits. The analysis of variance (ANOVA) showed highly significant difference for all the characters suggesting the presence of genetic variability among the studied materials. The variance values of general combining ability (GCA) were lower than the specific combining ability (SCA) for all the traits except plant height. This indicates that these traits were under the control of non-additive (non-fixable) gene effects and could be exploited by heterosis breeding. The lines L1, L2, L3, L5, and testers T2, and T4 showed a desirable significant negative GCA effect for days to first flowering and days to maturity. The line L5 showed a positive significant GCA effect for most of the traits except fruit per cluster and L4 for plant height, cluster per plant, fruit per cluster, fruit per plant, fruit diameter, and yield per plant. Based on GCA effects across ten traits L4 and L5 were identified as the most promising parental lines for inclusion in hybridization programs. Outstanding crosses based on SCA effects across ten traits were L6XT1, L2XT3, L7XT2, and L4XT4. These crosses could be considered the most promising specific combiner for most traits which can be used to develop elite tomato varieties.

COMBINING ABILITY OF WATERLOGGING TOLERANCE IN WHEAT (TRITICUM AESTIVUM L.)

The mean performance and combining abilities of cross combinations derived from a complete diallel mating and their parents were evaluated under waterlogging conditions. Analysis of variance for combining abilities indicated significant GCA (general combining ability) and SCA (specific combining ability) for single spike yield, SPAD (soil plant analysis development) and leaf area; GCA for NDVI (normalised differences vegetation index) and SCA for Fe and Mn contents in roots and membrane thermal stability. The parents Stendal, Beşköprü and Pamukova 97 were the best combiners in terms of waterlogging tolerance, while Beşköprü × Pamukova 97, Pamukova 97 × Beşköprü, Stendal × Pamukova 97, Stendal × Beşköprü and Beşköprü × Hanlı were identified as the best cross combinations, with high positive specific combining ability effects for most waterlogging related characters.

Combining Ability for Growth, Yield and Related Traits In Cucumber (Cucumis Sativus L.) Under Subtropical Conditions of Garhwal Himalayas

To assess the combining ability for quantitative and qualitative traits in cucumber a full diallel set of 7 parents and their 42 F1’s was evaluated at Horticultural Research Centre, Department of Horticulture, H.N.B. Garhwal University, Srinagar (Garhwal), Uttarakhand, India during 2015 and 2016. The mean sum of squares due to general combining ability (GCA) was of significant differences at 1 % level for almost all the characters. The variance due to specific combining ability (SCA) was found highly significant at 1 % level for almost all the characters. Results from general combining ability studies revealed that the parent, New Manipur-1 showed significant GCA effect in desired direction for maximum characters viz., length of vine, days to first fruit harvest and number of fruits per vine. The cross combinations, Seven Star x New Manipur-1 for length of vine, Swarna Purna x Seven Star for days to first fruit harvest; K-90 x Seven Star for number of fruits per vine and the cross PB-Naveen x Swarna Purna for total fruit yield per vine showed significant SCA effect in desired direction and found to be superior specific cross combinations. Unveiling combining ability and heterotic grouping of newly developed winter maize (Zea mays) inbreds

Pooled analysis of the test-crosses evaluation of 61 newly developed maize (Zea mays L.) inbred lines usingtwo inbred testers namely BML-6 and BML-7 during rabi 2016-17 and 2017-18 at ICAR-IIMR Regional Centre,Begusarai revealed significant variation among genotypes, general combining ability (GCA) and specific combiningability (SCA) effects for all the traits. Out of 61 inbred lines, 29 exhibited significant positive GCA effect for grainyield with maximum GCA effect value of 25.64. Inbred lines, viz. IMLSB-1299-5, IMLSB-406-2, IMLSB-334B-2,IMLSB-814-2 and IMLSB-285-1 were identified as the best general combiners on the basis of GCA effects whichcan be utilized to a greater extent in hybrid breeding programme. Out of 29 inbred lines with significant positive GCAeffects, 12 and 17 lines also showed significant positive SCA effects with tester, BML-7 and BML-6 respectively, thuswere classified into two heterotic groups ‘A’ and ‘B’, respectively. Out of 122 test-crosses, 14 exhibited significantand positive heterosis for yield over three national checks. The information generated on the heterotic grouping willhelp in further streamlining the available germplasm into heterotic pools and thereby augmenting the national hybridbreeding programme.

Evaluation of genetic behavior of some Egyption Cotton genotypes for tolerance to water stress conditions

Water stress is a critical abiotic stress for plant reduction in arid and semiarid zones and, has been discovered to be detrimental to the development of seedlings as well as the growth and physiological characteristics of many crops such as cotton. The objectives of our study were to determine the combining ability and genetic components for five quantitative traits [(leaf area (LA), leaf dry weight (LDW), plant height (PH), fiber length (2.5 percent SL), and lint cotton yield/plant (LCY/P)] under water shortage stress, a half diallel cross between six cotton genotypes representing a wide range of cotton characteristics was evaluated in RCBD with four replications. The genotype mean squares were significant for all traits studied, demonstrating significant variation among genotypes for all characters under water shortage stress. LCY/P had the highest phenotypic and genotypic correlation co-efficient with PH, LDW, and LA shortage. The highest direct effect on lint cotton yield was exhibited by leaf area (3.905), and the highest indirect effects of all traits were through LA, with the exception of 2.5 percent SL, which was through LDW. The highest dissimilarity (Euclidean Distance) between parental genotypes was between G.87 and G.94, followed by G.87 and Menoufi. G.94 was also a well-adapted genotype, and the combinations G.87 x G.94 and G.87 x Menoufi may outperform their parents. The combining ability analysis revealed highly significant differences between parental GCA effects and F1 crosses SCA effects. The variation of GCA and SCA demonstrated the assurance of additive and non- additive gene action in the inheritance of all traits studied. In terms of general combining ability (GCA) effects, parental genotype G.94 demonstrated the highest significant and positive GCA effects for all traits studied, with the exception of 2.5 percent SL, where G.87 revealed the highest significant and positive GCA effects. The effects of specific combining ability (SCA) revealed that the cross (G.87 x2G.94) revealed stable, positive, and significant SCA for all of the studied traits.

F1 progenies derived from a set of diallel crosses involving native and 5 elite cucumber varieties were evaluated in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications to study combining ability for some important agronomic traits. The analysis of variance revealed that the mean squares due to genotypes were significant for the traits studied, indicating wide diversity among the parents. Mean squares for general combining ability (GCA) and specific combining ability (SCA) were significant, implying both additive and non-additive genetic system controlling the studied traits. Significant GCA values were recorded by the native variety (Odukpani) for vegetative traits, fruit girth and average fruit weight. Low GCA values were recorded for days to flowering by the elite varieties, implying they are negative combiners for early flower influx. GCA for number of pistillate flowers and number of fruits per plant were positive and significant for the elite varieties, indicating they could be exploited in cucumber breeding programmes for improved female flower production. The high mean values for vegetative traits and days to flowering of the progenies arising from crosses with Odukpani as the maternal parent appear to suggest cytoplasmic influence in the inheritance of the traits. Eight sunflower inbred lines were crossed in 8&times;8 diallel fashion (without reciprocal) and 28 F1 were developed at Oilseed Research Centre (ORC), Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI), Gazipur in Rabi season, 2018. All F1 and their parents were planted in Rabi season 2019 to estimate general combining ability (GCA) and specific combining ability (SCA) effects for yield and yield attributes. The highly significant mean squares for genotypes for all the studied characters indicating wide variability in the parental materials. The highly significant GCA effects for stem diameter, days to maturity, number of seeds/head, 1000-seed weight and SCA effects for days to 50 flowering, days to maturity, head diameter, number of seeds/head, 1000-seed weight and seed yield were observed. The greater ratio of GCA/SCA implies the predominance of additive gene effect for all the studied characters. The parents, P1, P2, P3, P6 and P8 were found as good general combining parents for short duration, early maturity, lodging resistant, and 1000 seed weight. Crosses with the best SCA effects for some characters were found from the interaction of low &times; low, high &times; low, low &times; high or high &times; average combining parents. Further investigation on superiority and stability of good combining parents and hybrids over different years and locations is needed.
