THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THE ACUPUNCTURE REDUCING POINT ON THE IMPROVEMENT OF MUSCULAR STRENGTH OF STROKE PATIENTS

Background: Stroke is a disease caused by disruption of blood flow to areas of the brain that are blocked in the cerebral or cervical arteries which result in decreased or even loss of function controlled by brain tissue. One of the effects caused by stroke is hemiparesis. Rehabilitation therapy plays an important role in a comprehensive restoration of bodily functions due to stroke, this program aims to restore function to reduce disability, one of the treatments is to use acupuncture meridian points. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of acupuncture meridian points in increasing muscle strength in stroke patients. Methods: The research design used in this study was a randomized controlled trial (RCT) design. The number of samples of all stroke patients at the Holistic nursing therapy clinic in Probolinggo and the Healer School Jember Clinic that met the inclusion criteria from October 2020 to March 2021 were 270 respondents. Data collection techniques used observation sheets to assess muscle strength before and after the intervention of acupuncture meridian points in stroke patients. Data analysis used was the Wilcoxon test with a statistical significance value accepted if p <0.05. Results: The results of the data analysis of the intervention group showed a significant value of hand muscle strength (p 0.003; α 0.05) and leg (p 0.005, α 0.05) where (p <0.05) it can be concluded that there is a significant difference in strength. A muscle in the intervention group before and after being given acupuncture. The findings of this study suggest that there is a significant effect of acupuncture on lower and upper muscle strength. Conclusion: In general, the use of acupuncture meridian points can increase muscle strength in stroke patients, so the use of acupuncture meridian points can provide benefits for restoring muscle strength in stroke patients.

Pengaruh Terapi Akupunktur terhadap Metabolisme Glukosa pada Penderita Overweight dan Obesitas di Kelurahan Mojosongo Surakarta

Obesity is a multifactorial disease, which occurs as a result of excessive fat tissue accumulation and if not treated properly in the long term will lead to risks and complications of dangerous diseases including diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular disease, reproductive system disorders, gallstones, and bone diseases and joints. The purpose of this study is to determine the effect of acupuncture on glucose metabolism in overweight and obese patients. This study uses a quasi-experimental one-group pretest-posttest design. This research was conducted at the Posyandu Elderly in Mojosongo, Jebres, Surakarta City. This study focuses on acupuncture therapy on blood glucose levels, body mass index (BMI) and serum Hb.A1c levels before and after acupuncture therapy. Data analysis with Paired T-Test using SPSS Series 23 data processing application. The results showed that there was a significant but not significant effect of acupuncture on overweight and obese patients, there was a significant effect of acupuncture on Body Mass Index (BMI) in overweight and obese patients, and there is a significant effect of acupuncture on Hb.A1c levels in overweight and obese patients. The conclusion of this study shows that acupuncture therapy can affect glucose metabolism and reduce body mass index so as to prevent the onset of dangerous chronic diseases in the future.

Specifying the nonspecific components of acupuncture analgesia

It is well known that acupuncture has pain-relieving effects, but the contribution of specific and especially nonspecific factors to acupuncture analgesia is less clear. One hundred one patients who developed pain of ⩾3 on a visual analog scale (VAS, 0 to 10) after third molar surgery were randomized to receive active acupuncture, placebo acupuncture, or no treatment for 30min with acupuncture needles with potential for double-blinding. Patients’ perception of the treatment (active or placebo) and expected pain levels (VAS) were assessed before and halfway through the treatment. Looking at actual treatment allocation, there was no specific effect of active acupuncture (P=.240), but there was a large and significant nonspecific effect of placebo acupuncture (P<.001), which increased over time. Interestingly, however, looking at perceived treatment allocation, there was a significant effect of acupuncture (P<.001), indicating that patients who believed they received active acupuncture had significantly lower pain levels than those who believed they received placebo acupuncture. Expected pain levels accounted for significant and progressively larger amounts of the variance in pain ratings after both active and placebo acupuncture (up to 69.8%). This is the first study to show that under optimized blinding conditions, nonspecific factors such as patients’ perception of and expectations toward treatment are central to the efficacy of acupuncture analgesia and that these factors may contribute to self-reinforcing effects in acupuncture treatment. To obtain an effect of acupuncture in clinical practice, it may therefore be important to incorporate and optimize these factors.
