Abstract Study question Does a circadian variation of serum progesterone (P) on the frozen embryo transfer (FET) day in a modified natural cycle (mNC) exist? Summary answer A statistically significant diurnal variation of serum P on the day of a FET in a mNC protocol exists. What is known already In recent years, the proportion of FET cycles has increased dramatically. To further optimize pregnancy outcomes after FET, recent studies have focused on serum luteal P levels in both natural and artificially prepared FET cycles. Despite the different cut-off values proposed to define low serum P in the natural cycle, it is generally accepted that lower serum P values (<10ng/ml) around the day of FET are associated with negative reproductive outcomes. However, a single serum P measurement on the day of FET is not reliable given that P levels are prone to diurnal fluctuations and are impacted by patients’ characteristics. Study design, size, duration A prospective cohort study was conducted in a single fertility center including 22 patients performing a single blastocyst mNC-FET from August 2022 to August 2023.Serum P levels were measured on the day of transfer at 08:00h,12:00h,16:00h and 20:00h.Differences between P levels were compared using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test.The sample size was calculated to detect a difference of 15% between the first and last P measurements with a 5% false-positive rate and a 95% confidence interval. Participants/materials, setting, methods Patients with a normal BMI, between 18 and 40 years old, without uterine diseases were eligible. Patients utilizing donated oocytes were excluded. The mNC-FET protocol implied monitoring the normal ovarian cycle and triggering ovulation with an injection of 250 mcg of choriogonadotropin alfa when a pre-ovulatory follicle (16-20 mm diameter)was visualized. The blastocyst was transferred seven days later. The patients were not supplemented with exogenous P at any moment before the day of the FET. Main results and the role of chance The mean age and BMI of the study population were 33.6 ± 3.8 years and 22.7 ± 1.8 kg/m2, respectively. Mean P values at 08:00h,12:00h,16:00h, and 20:00h were 14.6 ± 4.5ng/ml, 14.7 ± 4.1ng/ml, 12.9 ± 3.5ng/ml, and 14.6 ± 4.3ng/ml, respectively. The mean P levels at 16:00h were statistically significantly lower compared to all other time points (p < 0.05:p= 0.007 between P at 8:00h and 16:00h;p = 0.003 between P at 12:00h and 16:00h;p=0.007 between P at 16:00h and 20:00h). Absence of a statistically significant fluctuation was observed between P values at the other time points (p = 0.88 between P at 8:00h and 12:00h;p=0.96 between P at 8:00h and 20:00h;p=0.83 between P at 12:00h and 20:00h). This study confirms the existence of an intra-day variation of serum P on the day of mNC-FET, with lower values at 16:00h. This highlights the importance of standardizing P measurement on the day of FET; we propose this should always be assessed in the morning to be more reliable and to allow the time to prescribe additional exogenous progesterone if lower P values (<10ng/ml) are detected. This standardization would allow fertility clinics around the world to compare their results and develop internationally recognized treatment protocols. Limitations, reasons for caution The study’s main limitation include the small sample size that may cause a bias when results are extrapolated to a larger subfertile population undergoing mNC-FET. Ideally, larger prospective trials including a more heterogeneous patient population would be necessary to validate our findings. Wider implications of the findings This study demonstrates the existence of a diurnal fluctuation of serum P on the mNC-FET day highlighting the importance of a standardized time point for its measurement.This is important when clinical actions, like additional exogenous P supplementation, are considered when encountering P values lower than 10ng/ml on the FET day. Diurnal Variation in Choroidal Parameters Among Healthy Subjects Using Wide-Field Swept-Source Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the diurnal variation in choroidal parameters in a wide field area among healthy subjects and to identify correlations between choroidal luminal area and stromal area and various systemic factors. In this cross-sectional study, 42 eyes from 21 healthy participants (mean age = 32.4 ± 8.8 years) were examined using wide-field swept-source optical coherence tomography angiography (WF SS-OCTA, 24 mm × 20 mm). Measurements of choroidal parameters, including choroidal volume (CV), choroidal thickness (CT), choroidal vessel volume (CVV), and choroidal stromal volume (CSV), were taken at 8:00, 12:00, 18:00, and 22:00. Systemic factors, such as blood pressure and heart rate, were concurrently monitored. Our study observed significant diurnal variations in the mean total CV, CT, CVV, and CSV, with minimum measurements around 12:00 (P < 0.001) and peak values at 22:00 (P < 0.001). Furthermore, changes in CV in specific regions were more closely associated with fluctuations in CVV than CSV in the same regions. No significant diurnal variations were found in systolic (P = 0.137) or diastolic blood pressure (P = 0.236), whereas significant variations were observed in the heart rate (P = 0.001). Our study reveals diurnal variations in choroidal parameters and their associations, emphasizing that changes in choroidal volume relate more to the luminal than the stromal area in vessel-rich regions. This enhances our understanding of choroidal-related ocular diseases. Regions with higher choroidal vasculature observed greater choroidal volume changes.

Does Chronotype Influence Diurnal Changes in Cardiovascular Disease Risk Factors? A Preliminary Analysis

Introduction: Humans experience diurnal fluctuations in the prevalence of cardiovascular events which is likely an output of endogenous circadian influence. Relatedly, vascular endothelial cell function, measured by conduit artery responsiveness to hyperemia during a flow-mediated dilation test, is supposed to follow a diurnal rhythm that is moderated by an individual’s chronotype. We therefore sought to examine the extent to which diurnal changes in other cardiovascular risk factors, such as blood pressure, cardiac chronotropy, and circulating blood leukocytes, were related to chronotype in humans. A moderating influence of chronotype on diurnal changes in the aforementioned parameters was hypothesized given prior research associating a preference for evening wakefulness with an adverse cardiometabolic phenotype. Methods: All data are presented as mean ± standard deviation. This abstract includes secondary data from a preliminary sample of 16 young (19 ± 2 years), healthy males and females. Participants completed a Munich Chronotype Questionnaire (MCQ) to quantify diurnal preference for morning or evening activity. The corrected mid-sleep time on free days (MSFSC) was calculated from the MCQ and interpreted to represent an index for morning or evening chronotype. Participants attended data collection sessions in the morning (09:16 ± 01:27 hh:mm) and again in the evening (16:19 ± 00:31 hh:mm) under resting conditions for the quantification of blood pressure and enumeration of circulating leukocytes from venous blood. Results: The sample included in this analysis had a slight preference for evening wakefulness (MSFSC = 04:58 ± 01:17 hh:mm). A significant and robust diurnal variation was found among circulating venous leukocytes (P &lt; 0.001) which measured higher in the afternoon (2.06×106 ± 3.67×105 cells/mL blood) than morning (1.61×106 ± 4.68×105 cells/mL blood). The diurnal variation in circulating venous leukocytes was independent (β = -9.87×104; R2 = 0.19; P = 0.186) of individual chronotype, as were individual diurnal changes of all other hemodynamic parameters included in this analysis (all P &gt; 0.05). More participants will be recruited to satisfy statistical power for primary outcomes. Discussion: These preliminary results from healthy, young adults indicate that individual disposition towards morning or evening wakefulness may not exert a profound influence over diurnal changes in several cardiovascular disease risk factors under resting conditions. A Comparative Study on Efficacy of Intraocular Pressure Lowering of Two Fixed-Dose Antiglaucoma Drug Combination Brinzolamide-Brimonidine Versus Latanoprost-Timolol in Primary Open-Angle Glaucoma and Ocular Hypertension.

Purpose: To compare the efficacy of Brinzolamide-Brimonidine (BB) (1%+0.2%) with the gold standard Latanoprost-Timolol (LT) (0.005%+0.5%) in treating primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) and ocular hypertension (OHT). Methods: A 1-year prospective study, spanning from May 2022 to May 2023, conducted at a tertiary eye-care hospital. Participants, aged 40-60, with a baseline intraocular pressure (IOP) >21 mm Hg, requiring a >30% reduction, were enrolled. Group A (n = 100) received BB, and Group B (n = 100) received LT. Outcomes were assessed at 1 month (IOP difference from baseline), 3 and 6 months (mean diurnal variations). Results: The mean age at presentation was 55.5 ± 4.5 years in Group A and 54.7 ± 4.2 years in Group B. At 1 month, Group A exhibited a mean IOP of 18.7 mm Hg, while Group B had 17.6 mm Hg, with no statistically significant difference (P = 0.53). No significant diurnal variation was observed in either group (P = 0.07). Target pressure was achieved in 88% of patients in Group A and slightly higher at 92% in Group B. Moreover, no serious side effects were reported, and compliance was higher in Group B (98%) compared to Group A (96%). Conclusion: Although LT showed slightly better and sustained IOP reduction, the difference was not statistically significant. Both BB and LT demonstrated comparable outcomes for managing POAG and OHT.

Energy consumption analysis and optimization of cold stores considering differential electricity price

Despite the rapid development of cold stores, most cold store facilities exhibit high energy consumption. Reducing energy costs in cold stores is crucial for minimizing operating expenses and effectively managing the overall cold supply chain. Our objective is to optimize the operational strategy of cold stores based on differential pricing to minimize energy consumption. Firstly, we employ computational fluid dynamics simulation to model the operation of cold stores and determine optimal boundary conditions. Secondly, we propose a comprehensive method for accounting for cold stores' energy consumption by considering heat conduction from the enclosure structure and air seepage. Additionally, under the conditions of extra cool storage at a low electricity price, we divide the cold store operation process into four stages and establish a mathematical model for optimizing energy consumption throughout the entire operational cycle based on differential electricity pricing policies. Finally, three cities are selected for case analysis purposes. The results demonstrate that all three cities achieve an average energy saving level exceeding 8%, with Harbin city achieving over 18% savings specifically, thereby validating that our optimization model can yield superior results in northern cities characterized by significant diurnal temperature variations.

Daytime variation in the aerosol indirect effect for warm marine boundary layer clouds in the eastern North Atlantic

Abstract. Warm boundary layer clouds in the eastern North Atlantic region exhibit significant diurnal variations in cloud properties. However, the diurnal cycle of the aerosol indirect effect (AIE) for these clouds remains poorly understood. This study takes advantage of recent advancements in the spatial resolution of geostationary satellites to explore the daytime variation in the AIE by estimating the cloud susceptibilities to changes in cloud droplet number concentration (Nd). Cloud retrievals for the month of July over 4 years (2018–2021) from the Spinning Enhanced Visible and Infrared Imager (SEVIRI) on Meteosat-11 over this region are analyzed. Our results reveal a significant “U-shaped” daytime cycle in susceptibilities of the cloud liquid water path (LWP), cloud albedo, and cloud fraction. Clouds are found to be more susceptible to Nd perturbations at noon and less susceptible in the morning and evening. The magnitude and sign of cloud susceptibilities depend heavily on the cloud state defined by cloud LWP and precipitation conditions. Non-precipitating thin clouds account for 44 % of all warm boundary layer clouds in July, and they contribute the most to the observed daytime variation. Non-precipitating thick clouds are the least frequent cloud state (10 %), and they exhibit more negative LWP and albedo susceptibilities compared to thin clouds. Precipitating clouds are the dominant cloud state (46 %), but their cloud susceptibilities show minimal variation throughout the day. We find evidence that the daytime variation in LWP and albedo susceptibilities for non-precipitating clouds is influenced by a combination of the diurnal transition between non-precipitating thick and thin clouds and the “lagged” cloud responses to Nd perturbations. The daytime variation in cloud fraction susceptibility for non-precipitating thick clouds can be attributed to the daytime variation in cloud morphology (e.g., overcast or broken). The dissipation and development of clouds do not adequately explain the observed variation in cloud susceptibilities. Additionally, daytime variation in cloud susceptibility is primarily driven by variation in the intensity of cloud response rather than the frequency of occurrence of cloud states. Our results imply that polar-orbiting satellites with an overpass time at 13:30 LT underestimate daytime mean values of cloud susceptibility, as they observe susceptibility daily minima in the study region.

Diurnal variation of corneal epithelium and stroma measured by optical coherence tomography

Abstract Purpose: The purpose of the study is to evaluate whether there is a significant diurnal variation in the thickness of corneal epithelium and stroma, in healthy volunteers, using corneal optical coherence tomography (OCT). Introduction: During sleep, closing the eyelids impairs the diffusion of oxygen through the corneal epithelium, resulting in the production of lactic acid, which can interfere with corneal thickness in the 1st min of wakefulness. OCT is an objective and noninvasive accurate method for evaluating corneal epithelium and storm thickness. Methods: A prospective and analytical study investigated the thickness and regularity of the cornea and its epithelium in the eyes (n = 30) of individuals without comorbidities. The volunteers underwent corneal OCT examination in two different periods: between 30 and 60 min after waking up and in the late afternoon of the same day. The study was carried out at Médicos de Olhos S.A, Curitiba, Brazil, between August and October 2023. For statistical analysis, the T-Student test was used, considering P &lt; 0.0001 as statistically significant. Results: Epithelium variability index, in OD (P = 0.965) and in OS (P = 0.516), did not present a statistically significant difference. The difference in thickness between epithelium minimum and maximum, OD (P = 0.880) and OS (P = 1.0), also did not show a statistically significant difference. Discussion: It was possible to verify that the epithelial and stromal thickness of the cornea did not show significant diurnal variations. Furthermore, the regularity of epithelial thickness remained constant, as indicated by the epithelial variability index value.

Plant Molecular Phenology and Climate Feedbacks Mediated by BVOCs.

Climate change profoundly affects the timing of seasonal activities of organisms, known as phenology. The impact of climate change is not unidirectional; it is also influenced by plant phenology as plants modify atmospheric composition and climatic processes. One important aspect of this interaction is the emission of biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs), which link the Earth's surface, atmosphere, and climate. BVOC emissions exhibit significant diurnal and seasonal variations and are therefore considered essential phenological traits. To understand the dynamic equilibrium arising from the interplay between plant phenology and climate, this review presents recent advances in comprehending the molecular mechanisms underpinning plant phenology and its interaction with climate. We provide an overview of studies investigating molecular phenology, genome-wide gene expression analyses conducted in natural environments, and how these studies revolutionize the concept of phenology, shifting it from observable traits to dynamic molecular responses driven by gene-environment interactions. We explain how this knowledge can be scaled up to encompass plant populations, regions, and even the globe by establishing connections between molecular phenology, changes in plant distribution, species composition, and climate. Characteristics and Source Apportionment of Volatile Organic Compounds in an Industrial Area at the Zhejiang–Shanghai Boundary, China

As “fuel” for atmospheric photochemical reactions, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) play a key role in the secondary generation of ozone (O3) and fine particulate matter (PM2.5, an aerodynamic diameter ≤ 2.5 μm). To determine the characteristics of VOCs in a high-level ozone period, comprehensive monitoring of O3 and its precursors (VOCs and NOx) was continuously conducted in an industrial area in Shanghai from 18 August to 30 September 2021. During the observation period, the average concentration of VOCs was 47.33 ppb, and alkanes (19.64 ppb) accounted for the highest proportion of TVOCs, followed by oxygenated volatile organic compounds (OVOCs) (13.61 ppb), alkenes (6.92 ppb), aromatics (4.65 ppb), halogenated hydrocarbons (1.60 ppb), and alkynes (0.91 ppb). Alkenes were the predominant components that contributed to the ozone formation potential (OFP), while aromatics such as xylene, toluene, and ethylbenzene contributed the most to the secondary organic aerosol production potential (SOAFP). During the study period, O3, NOx, and VOCs showed significant diurnal variations. Industrial processes were the main source of VOCs, and the second largest source of VOCs was vehicle exhaust. While the largest contribution to OFP was from vehicle exhaust, the second largest contribution was from liquid petroleum gas (LPG). High potential source contribution function (PSCF) values were observed in western and southeastern areas near the sampling sites. The results of a health risk evaluation showed that the Hazard Index was less than 1 and there was no non-carcinogenic risk, but 1,3-butadiene, benzene, chloroform, 1,2-dibromoethane, and carbon tetrachloride pose a potential carcinogenic risk to the population.

Physical Properties, Chemical Components, and Transport Mechanisms of Atmospheric Aerosols Over a Remote Area on the South Slope of the Tibetan Plateau

AbstractThe physicochemical properties and origins of atmospheric aerosols in the Tibetan Plateau (TP) region are a research topic of great interest, but an in‐depth understanding of this topic is challenging, partially due to a lack of intensive in situ observations. Thus, a field campaign was conducted over Yadong, a remote area on the south slope of the TP from June 11 to 31 August 2021. The aerosol loading was low, with a black carbon mass concentration of 147.4 ± 98.4 ng·m−3. Aerosol single‐scattering albedo was low (0.73 ± 0.11 at 550 nm) and increased from 450 to 700 nm wavelength. Organic matter (OM) accounting for 69.6% of the total aerosol mass and relatively high secondary organic carbon ratios, highlighting the importance of secondary formation. An interesting phenomenon observed was that the evolution of aerosols was mainly characterized by diurnal variation, which could not be explained by large‐scale atmospheric processes such as Indian summer monsoon. Instead, it was found that regional mountain‐valley winds between the Himalayas and South Asia transported polluted air masses toward the TP, especially in the afternoon when regional valley wind are expected to be the strongest and the boundary layer in South Asia is deepest. Additionally, daytime local valley wind further elevated these aerosols to higher altitudes on the TP. This paper provides insights into the transport mechanisms of aerosols from South Asia to the TP. These findings are of great importance since aerosols exhibit significant diurnal variations in the TP region.

Lighting the way: Exploring diurnal physical performance differences in school-aged visually impaired children and adolescents

ABSTRACT Circadian rhythms play a pivotal role in governing various physiological processes, including physical performance. However, in individuals deprived of light perception, such as the blind, these circadian rhythms face disruption. This study aimed to explore the influence of disturbed circadian rhythms on short-term maximal physical performance in children and adolescents with visual impairment. Forty-five volunteers participated in this study, comprising 17 blind, 13 visually impaired, and 15 sighted participants. The participants underwent a series of tests assessing maximal isometric strength performance across two days. To mitigate the influence of morning session fatigue on the evening results, each participant group performed in two separate testing sessions (i.e. in the morning (7:00 h) and in the evening (17:00 h)) on non-consecutive days in a randomized and counterbalanced setting, with approximately 36 h of recovery time between sessions. To mitigate the impact of inter-individual differences on mean values and to account for the influence of age and sex on the studied variables, data were normalized. The outcomes revealed a significant diurnal variation in maximal isometric strength performance among sighted individuals, with peak performance observed in the evening. This pattern aligns with their well-entrained circadian rhythm. In contrast, blind and visually impaired individuals did not display significant diurnal variation, signaling disrupted circadian rhythms due to the absence of light perception. These findings emphasize the crucial consideration of circadian rhythms in assessments of physical performance, especially among participants with visual impairments.

Uncertainty of Atmospheric Winds in Three Widely Used Global Reanalysis Datasets

Abstract Atmospheric winds are crucial to the transport of heat, moisture, momentum, and chemical species, facilitating Earth’s climate system interactions. Existing weather and climate studies rely heavily on the wind fields from reanalysis datasets. In this study, we analyze the uncertainty of instantaneous atmospheric winds in three reanalysis (ERA5, MERRA-2, and CFSv2) datasets. We show that the mean wind vector differences (WVDs) between the reanalysis datasets are about 3–6 m s−1 in the troposphere. The mean absolute wind direction differences can be more than 50°. Large WVDs greater than 5 m s−1 are found for 30%–50% of the time when the observed precipitation rate is larger than 0.1 mm h−1 over the eastern Pacific Ocean, Indian Ocean, Atlantic Ocean, and some mountain areas. The mean WVDs exhibit seasonal variations but no significant diurnal variations. The uncertainty of vertical wind shear has a correlation of 0.59 with the uncertainty of winds at 300 hPa. The magnitudes of vorticity and horizontal divergence uncertainties are on the order of 1 × 10−5 s−1, which is comparable to the mean values of vorticity and horizontal divergence. In comparison with some limited observations from field campaigns, the reanalysis datasets exhibit a mean WVD ranging from 2 to 4.5 m s−1. Among the three reanalysis datasets, ERA5 shows the closest agreement with the observations while MERRA-2 has the largest discrepancy. The substantial uncertainty and errors of the reanalysis wind products highlight the critical need for new satellite missions dedicated to 3D wind measurements.

Circadian rhythm and variability of large and small airway spirometric variables in healthy individuals.

To assess the diurnal rhythm and variability of lung function in healthy individuals, encompassing both large and small airways. A prospective study enrolled 35 healthy adults without a history of smoking. Initial spirometry and a bronchodilation test were performed using the Jaeger spirometer, followed by a seven-day continuous home monitoring using the GOSPT2000. We evaluated repeatability using the intraclass correlation coefficient and agreement through linear regression and Bland-Altman analyses. Circadian rhythm and variability in spirometric measurements were analyzed using the coefficient of variation (CV) and daily variation rate. The GOSPT2000 demonstrated strong repeatability and high agreement with the Jaeger spirometer. Notable findings included a decrease in nocturnal forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1), forced vital capacity (FVC), and FEV3 by 44, 59, and 53 mL, respectively. In contrast, peak expiratory flow at noon showed an increase of 0.143L/min. Small-airway variables, including forced expiratory flow at 50% and 75% of the FVC and maximum midexpiratory flow, showed no significant diurnal variation. The nocturnal CV for large-airway variables was ≤ 4%, while for small-airway variables, it was ≤ 11.89%. This study has established a spectrum of variability for both large and small airways in healthy populations. The variability of small-airway variables is higher than that of large-airway variables. The investigation into the diurnal rhythms and variability characteristics of both large and small airway variables in the healthy population can serve as a foundation for diagnosing asthma or assessing the efficacy of asthma treatments.

Diurnal Variation Characteristics of Raindrop Size Distribution Observed by a Parsivel2 Disdrometer in the Ili River Valley

The diurnal variation characteristics of raindrop size distribution (RSD) in the Ili River Valley are investigated in this study, using the RSD data from May to September during 2020-2021 collected by a Parsivel2 disdrometer in Zhaosu. Significant diurnal variations (02–07, 08–13, 14–19, and 20-01 local standard time (LST)) of precipitation and RSD in Zhaosu are revealed during the rainy seasons. Precipitation mainly occurs in the late afternoon and early evening. A higher concentration of small raindrops is observed in the morning, whereas more mid-size and large raindrops are observed in the afternoon. The RSD exhibits diurnal differences between different rainfall rate classes; the diurnal difference of RSD is more pronounced in the case of high rainfall rates. Stratiform precipitation can occur at any time of the day, yet convective precipitation mainly occurs during the late afternoon and early evening. The RSD of stratiform rainfall shows a similar distribution over the four time periods. For convective rainfall, the concentration of small raindrops is the highest (lowest) over 02–07 (14–19) LST, while the highest (lowest) concentration of medium and large drops is observed over 14–19 (02–07) LST. Convective rain in the Ili River Valley over 14–19 LST can be characterized as the continental convective cluster, while in the rest time of the day, it is neither in the maritime cluster nor in the continental cluster. The empirical relationships between the radar reflectivity factor and rainfall rate (Z-R) for stratiform and convective rain types are also derived. The purpose of this study is to advance our understanding of precipitation microphysics in arid mountainous region.

Evaluation of in situ observations on Marine Weather Observer during Typhoon Sinlaku

Abstract. The mobile ocean weather observation system, named Marine Weather Observer (MWO), developed by the Institute of Atmospheric Physics (IAP), consists of a fully solar-powered, unoccupied vehicle and meteorological and hydrological instruments. One of the MWOs completed a long-term continuous observation, actively approaching the center of Typhoon Sinlaku from 24 July to 2 August 2020, over the South China Sea. The in situ and high-temporal-resolution (1 min) observations obtained from MWO were analyzed and evaluated through comparison with the observations made by two types of buoys during the evolution of Typhoon Sinlaku. First, the air pressure and wind speed measured by MWO are in good agreement with those measured by the buoys before the typhoon, reflecting the equivalent measurement capabilities of the two methods under normal sea conditions. The sea surface temperature (SST) between MWO and the mooring buoys is highly consistent throughout the observation period, indicating the high stability and accuracy of SST measurements from MWO during the typhoon evolution. The air temperature and relative humidity measured by MWO have significant diurnal variations, generally lower than those measured by the buoys, which may be related to the mounting height and sensitivity of sensors. When actively approaching the typhoon center, the air pressure from MWO can reflect some drastic and subtle changes, such as a sudden drop to 980 hPa, which is difficult to obtain by other observation methods. As a mobile meteorological and oceanographic observation station, MWO has shown its unique advantages over traditional observation methods, and the results preliminarily demonstrate the reliable observation capability of MWO in this paper.

Hydraulic properties and drought response of a tropical bamboo (Cephalostachyum pergracile)

Bamboo plants are an essential component of tropical ecosystems, yet their vulnerability to climate extremes, such as drought, is poorly understood due to limited knowledge of their hydraulic properties. Cephalostachyum pergracile, a commonly used tropical bamboo species, exhibited a substantially higher mortality rate than other co-occurring bamboos during a severe drought event in 2019, but the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. This study investigated the leaf and stem hydraulic traits related to drought responses, including leaf-stem embolism resistance (P50leaf; P50stem) estimated using optical and X-ray microtomography methods, leaf pressure–volume and water-releasing curves. Additionally, we investigated the seasonal water potentials, native embolism level (PLC) and xylem water source using stable isotope. We found that C. pergracile exhibited strong resistance to embolism, showing low P50leaf, P50stem, and turgor loss point, despite its rapid leaf water loss. Interestingly, its leaves displayed greater resistance to embolism than its stem, suggesting a lack of effective hydraulic vulnerability segmentation (HVS) to protect the stem from excessive xylem tension. During the dry season, approximately 49% of the water was absorbed from the upper 20-cm-deep soil layer. Consequently, significant diurnal variation in leaf water potentials and an increase in midday PLC from 5.87 ± 2.33% in the wet season to 12.87 ± 4.09% in the dry season were observed. In summary, this study demonstrated that the rapid leaf water loss, high reliance on surface water, and a lack of effective HVS in C. pergracile accelerated water depletion and increased xylem embolism even in the typical dry season, which may explain its high mortality rate during extreme drought events in 2019.

Analyzing GOES-R ABI BRDF-adjusted EVI2 time series by comparing with VIIRS observations over the CONUS

The Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI) instruments onboard the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite-R series (GOES-R) provide new opportunities to expand their applications in global terrestrial ecology and environmental sciences. It offers a 5–15 min temporal resolution and 0.5–1 km spatial resolution that greatly benefit those environmental applications where spatial resolution can be compromised in favor of more frequent imagery. However, ABI captures reflected radiation at varying sun positions throughout the day, causing significant diurnal variations. The varying off-nadir view across ABI full disk presents further challenges for generating comparable and consistent vegetation observations, such as the two-band Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI2). To address these challenges, three Bidirectional Reflectance Distribution Function (BRDF) models (RossThick-LiSparse-Reciprocal (RTLSR), Walthall, and Tian models) are examined to generate high-quality BRDF-adjusted EVI2 based on GeoNEX GOES-16 ABI surface reflectance. The ABI BRDF retrievals are then systematically compared to the corresponding VIIRS (Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite) Nadir BRDF-Adjusted Reflectance (NBAR) products (VNP43 V001) retrieved from RTLSR model. The viewing geometry effects are further analyzed over various land cover types using time series analysis, Pearson Correlation Coefficients (PCC), and Relative Difference (RD) between ABI and VIIRS high-quality time series inversions. The results indicate that the RTLSR model fits well the diurnal ABI observed reflectance and EVI2 values (even for the hot-spot phenomena), and outperforms the Walthall and Tian models for generating ABI high-quality BRDF retrievals with consistently low Root Mean Square Error (RMSE<0.02) and Weight of Determination (WoD < 0.5) across the CONUS. The annual proportion of ABI high-quality BRDF retrievals with a 3-day moving window using the RTLSR model is spatially and statistically comparable to that of VIIRS NBAR with a 16-day retrieval period. Compared to the time series of high-quality VIIRS NBAR EVI2, the BRDF adjusted ABI EVI2 time series still show considerable impacts of view zenith angles over evergreen forest, shrubland, and savanna pixels. However, such impacts are not significant over spatially homogeneous pixels such as cropland and deciduous forests. These results emphasize the need for BRDF correction when considering the impact of off-nadir observations from geostationary satellites on vegetation monitoring. They also demonstrate the advantages of geostationary satellites in capturing rapid changes in greenness trajectories.

Diurnal variation in quantitative pupillary reactivity in large hemispheric stroke

Background: Pupillary light reflex (PLR) assessment is an important neurological examination reflecting neurological deterioration in severe stroke cases. This study investigated the impact of diurnal variation in the PLR using quantitative pupillometry in stable patients with large hemispheric stroke.Methods: We included 35 patients with large hemispheric stroke without neurological worsening, who were admitted to the neurological intensive care unit between April 2017 and November 2021. Quantitative pupillometry was performed every 4 hours. Pupillometer parameters of maximum pupil size, percentage of constriction (%CH), latency (LAT), constriction velocity (CV), dilation velocity (DV), maximum constriction velocity (MCV), and neurological pupil index (NPi) score were recorded. We evaluated changes in the pupillometer parameters over time using linear mixed model analysis.Results: The diurnal variations revealed that the following parameters were significantly higher at 04:00 than at 20:00: maximum pupil size (right [Rt]: 3.59 vs. 3.21 mm, P&lt;0.001; left [Lt]: 3.51 vs. 3.18 mm, P&lt;0.001), %CH (Rt: 31.48 vs. 25.72, P&lt;0.001; Lt: 31.42 vs. 24.98, P&lt;0.001), CV (Rt: 1.97 vs. 1.68 mm/sec, P&lt;0.001; Lt: 1.98 vs. 1.65 mm/sec, P&lt;0.001), and DV (Rt: 0.97 vs. 0.84 mm/sec, P&lt;0.001; Lt: 0.94 vs. 0.82 mm/sec, P=0.001). However, no significant diurnal variations were observed in the NPi values. Conclusion: Pupillary dynamics based on quantitative pupillometer parameters, including the NPi, demonstrated diurnal variations over 24 hours in large hemispheric stroke patients without neurological worsening. However, all changes in the pupillometer parameters were within normal ranges.
