Foot-dominance does not influence force variability during ankle dorsiflexion and foot adduction.

The aim of our study was to compare the force steadiness and the discharge characteristics of motor units in the tibialis anterior (TA) during ankle dorsiflexion and foot adduction produced by submaximal isometric contractions with the dominant and non-dominant foot. Fifteen young men performed maximal and submaximal contractions at five target forces with both legs, and motor unit activity in TA was recorded using high-density electromyography. Maximal force and the fluctuations in force during submaximal contractions were similar between the two legs (p > 0.05). Motor unit activity was characterized by measures of mean discharge rate (MDR), coefficient of variation for interspike interval (CoV for ISI), and standard deviation of the filtered cumulative spike train (SD of fCST). There were no statistically significant differences in motor unit activity between legs during ankle dorsiflexion. In contrast, the MDR and the CoV for ISI but not the SD of fCST, were greater for the non-dominant foot compared with the dominant foot during foot adduction. Nonetheless, these differences in motor unit activity were not sufficient to influence the force fluctuations during the submaximal contractions. These results indicate that control of the force produced by TA during the two actions was not influenced by limb dominance.

Myoelectrical activity of sternocleidomastoid muscle in smartphone-addicted versus non-addicted individuals

BackgroundOver the past decade, smartphone users have substantially increased, raising concerns about potential musculoskeletal problems associated with long-term use. Prolonged smartphone usage may cause discomfort in the thumb, shoulder, and neck that can be exacerbated over time, thereby affecting the electrical activity of several muscles, such as the sternocleidomastoid muscle (SCM). Accordingly, we aimed to examine the impact of smartphone addiction on the myoelectric activity of the SCM.Design and methodForty-four smartphone users, both male and female, aged 18–30 years, were recruited from the Faculty of Physical Therapy, Cairo University, in this observational study. The participants were equally allocated into two groups, A and B, based on their Smartphone Addiction Scale-Short Version (SAS-SV) scores. Group A consisted of smartphone-non-addicted users who scored below 31 for males and 33 for females, whereas group B included smartphone-addicted users who scored over 31 for men and 33 for females. Additionally, the electromyography (EMG) device was used to monitor the electrical activity during rest and maximum voluntary contraction (MVC).ResultsThe results showed a significant difference (P < 0.0001) in the electrical activity of the left and right SCMs between the two groups at rest but a nonsignificant difference during MVC.ConclusionSmartphone addiction significantly impacts the myoelectric activity of the SCM at rest among young adult smartphone users, but this impact is not significant during MVC.

Evaluation of Glutathione S-transferases Expression as Biomarkers by Heavy Metals in Geloina expansa from Sepang Besar River, Selangor, Malaysia

Glutathione S-transferases (GSTs) are enzymes involved in phase II of detoxification metabolism and could be used as biomarkers for water pollution. This study aims to determine heavy metal concentrations in the soft tissue of the mangrove clam Geloina expansa, as well as the expression of GSTs in the species. The acid digestion method was used to digest the samples, followed by a standard USEPA 6010B procedure using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) to measure the heavy metal contents in the samples. GST enzyme activity was measured using 1-chloro-2, 4-dinitrobenzene (CDNB) as substrate. One-way ANOVA was performed to compare the mean values of heavy metal concentration, protein concentration, enzyme activity, and specific activity. There was a significant difference (p&lt;0.05) for Zn, total protein, and specific activity in G. expansa, but no significant difference in Pb, Cu and enzyme activity. GST enzyme activities were estimated at 0.16 ± 0.01 µmol/min, with a protein content of 1.24 ± 0.04 mg. The specific activity for GST was 0.13 ± 0.01 µmol/min/mg, calculated as the ratio of enzyme activity to the total protein. GST-specific activity positively correlates with Pb concentration in the soft tissue of G. expansa. Detailed studies on the effects of pollution on the expression of GST need to be further investigated for the future use of this species as an efficient biomarker model.

Screening and the analysis of genotypic and phenotypic characterization of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency in Fujian province, China

IntroductionGlucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency is a common X-linked hereditary disorder in southern China. However, the incidence rate of G6PD deficiency and the frequency of the most common G6PD gene variants vary widely. The purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence, genotype, and phenotypic features of G6PD deficiency in neonates in Fujian province, southeastern China.MethodsThis retrospective cohort study enrolled 2,789,002 newborns (1,521,431 males and 1,267,571 females) based on the newborn screening program for G6PD deficiency in Fujian Province between January 2010 and December 2021.ResultsOf the 2,789,002 newborns enrolled, 26,437 cases were diagnosed (22,939 males and 3,498 females), and the estimated prevalence of G6PD deficiency in Fujian province was 0.95%. The prevalence was significantly higher among males (1.51%) than in females (0.28%) (p &amp;lt; 0.00001). Among the 3,198 patients with G6PD deficiency, 3,092 cases (2,145 males and 947 females) were detected to have G6PD gene variants. The top six prevalent genotypes identified represented 90.84% (2095/3,198) of the total and included c.1376G &amp;gt; T (44.93%), c.1388G &amp;gt; A (18.42%), c.1024C &amp;gt; T (9.32%), c.95A &amp;gt; G (8.69%), c.392G &amp;gt; T (5.25%), and c.871G &amp;gt; A (4.22%). The frequency of genotypes with c.1388G &amp;gt; A, c.1024C &amp;gt; T, and c.871G &amp;gt; A was higher in males in the Fujian province than in females, while the frequency of genotypes with c.1376G &amp;gt; T was lower. Furthermore, when comparing the enzyme activities of the top six prevalent genotypes, there were significant differences in the enzyme activities among the genotypes of male hemizygotes and female heterozygotes. According to the new classification of G6PD variants proposed by the World Health Organization (WHO), the variants with c.1376G &amp;gt; T, c.95A &amp;gt; G, and c.871G &amp;gt; A were recognized as Class A, while the c.392G &amp;gt; T, c.1388G &amp;gt; A, and c.1024C &amp;gt; T were recognized as Class B.DiscussionTo the best of our knowledge, this study is the first to systematically describe the overview of epidemiological characteristics of newborn G6PD deficiency in Fujian province, China, including the screening rate, incidence rate, and variant spectrum. Additionally, we elucidated the relationship between the distribution of enzyme activity with specific mutations and their WHO classification patterns. Our results could provide strategies for screening, diagnosis, and genetic counseling of G6PD deficiency in this area.

Clinical characteristics and labial gland pathological features in children with systemic lupus erythematosus complicated by Sjögren's syndrome

To study the clinical manifestations, laboratory features, and labial gland pathological features in children with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) complicated by Sjögren's syndrome (SS). A retrospective analysis was conducted on 102 children with SLE who underwent labial gland biopsies at Renji Hospital, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine from January 2013 to December 2022. The children were divided into two groups based on the presence of SS: the SLE with SS group (SLE-SS; 60 children) and the SLE-only group (42 children). According to the focus score (FS) of the labial glands, children in the SLE-SS group were further subdivided into FS≥4 subgroup (26 children) and FS<4 subgroup (34 children). The clinical data of the groups were compared. Compared to the SLE-only group, children in the SLE-SS group had less skin and mucosal involvement, were more likely to have positive anti-SSA and anti-SSB antibodies, and had higher levels of rheumatoid factor (P<0.05). There was no significant difference in treatment protocols between the two groups (P>0.05). Compared to the FS<4 subgroup, the FS≥4 subgroup had more frequent musculoskeletal involvement (P<0.05), but there was no significant difference in SLE disease activity or other major organ involvement between the subgroups (P>0.05). Children with SLE complicated by SS are less likely to have skin and mucous membrane involvement and exhibit specific serological characteristics. The SLE-SS children with an FS≥4 are more likely to experience musculoskeletal involvement. However, FS is not associated with disease activity or other significant organ damage.

Quality of honey from Tubuna bees (Scaptotrigona bipunctata) fresh, thermally treated and during storage

Intrinsic characteristics, such as the presence of sugars and high levels of moisture and water activity, give stingless bee honey a greater tendency to fermentation than Apis mellifera honey. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the physicochemical, microbiological, and antioxidant parameters of honey sourced from Tubuna bees (Scaptotrigona bipunctata) in its fresh state, following thermal treatment, and during storage. Samples were collected from three meliponaries in the South of Brazil. Thermal treatment involved a 3 min immersion at 65 °C, and storage occurred at ambient temperature. Parameters assessed included moisture, free acidity, pH, water activity, soluble solids, reducing sugars, apparent sucrose, hydroxymethylfurfural, color, ash, mesophilic aerobic bacteria, molds, yeasts, Escherichia coli, and antioxidant activity (DPPH and ABTS). Thermally treated honey demonstrated improved moisture stability, acidity, water activity, and increased color during storage. There were no significant differences in pH, soluble solids, hydroxymethylfurfural, bacteria, molds, yeasts, and antioxidant activity between thermally treated and fresh honey, and during storage. Both fresh and thermally treated S. bipunctata honey samples were free from E. coli and maintained values within state legislation limits for moisture, sugars, hydroxymethylfurfural, ash, molds, and yeasts during storage. However, the microorganism count was reduced, and an increase in antioxidant activity after 360 days was observed. The treatment in a water bath at 65 °C for 3 min preserved the physicochemical, microbiological, and antioxidant quality of Scaptotrigona bipunctata honey during storage. The results hold promise for supporting “meliponicultores”, offering market opportunities, ensuring product quality, and fostering sustainability while preserving local biodiversity and culture.

Is Salivary Α-Amylase a Reliable Indicator of Psychological Status and Quality of Life in Patients with Oral Lichen Planus: a Case-Control Study.

The objectives of our study were to determine salivary α-amylase activity (stress biomarker) and its association with psychological status and quality of life (QoL), disease duration and intensity of symptoms (pain/burning) in patients with OLP. A total of 50 subjects participated in this case-control study: 30 patients with oral lichen planus (OLP); 20 control subjects. Unstimulated whole saliva (UWS) was collected between 9 and 10 am to avoid diurnal fluctuations. Psychological status was assessed using the Croatian validated version of the original Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale (DASS-21). The impact of oral health on QoL was assessed using the Croatian version of the Oral Health Impact Profile Questionnaire (OHIP-CRO14). There was no statistically significant difference in salivary α-amylase activity between patients with OLP (N=30) and control subjects (N=20) (133813.3 vs. 166815.5 U/L, p=0.314; t-test). Depression, anxiety and stress showed no statistically significant difference between patients with OLP and control subjects (p=0.076, p=0.111, p=0.209; t-test). The patients with OLP had statistically significantly poorer QoL (total) compared to control subjects (p=0.004, t-test). There was a moderate positive correlation between symptom intensity (pain/burning) and poor QoL (total) (r=0.584, p<0.001), the OHIP-CRO14 dimension "physical pain" (r=0.661, p<0.001), "psychological impossibility" (r=0.555, p<0.01), "handicap" (r=0.546, p<0.01). Although salivary α-amylase showed no statistically significant difference between patients with OLP and control subjects, the patients with OLP had poorer psychological status (three times higher scores for depression and two times higher scores for anxiety) and poorer QoL compared to the control subjects. Recognising and treating mental disorders in patients with OLP is important in order to break the "vicious circle" and achieve a better QoL in these patients.

Sleep disorder experienced by healthcare nurses after terminating Zero-COVID-19 policy

ObjectiveMedical staff, especially nurses, suffered great anxiety and stress from the COVID-19 pandemic, which negatively affected their sleep quality. In this study, we aimed to analyze the sleep quality of nursing staff after terminating the Zero-COVID-19 policy in China.Methods506 participants were involved in our study. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) was used to evaluate the sleep status of the participants. Binary regression was performed to evaluate the impact factors related to sleep difficulty.ResultsThe majority of participants (96.44%) suffered from sleep disturbances. There were significant differences in age, education level and front-line activity between participants with good sleep quality and sleep difficulty. Younger age (16–25 years old) was independently associated with less sleep difficulty, while front-line activity was independently associated with severe sleep difficulty.ConclusionSleep disorder was very common among nurses after ending the Zero-COVID-19 policy in China. More front-line nurses suffered severe sleep difficulty in particular, which should be worthy of attention.

Joint effect of black carbon deriving from wheat straw burning and plastic mulch film debris on the soil biochemical properties, bacterial and fungal communities

Black carbon (BC) formed after straw burning remains in farmland soil and coexists with plastic mulch film (PMF) debris. It is unclear how BC influences soil multifunctionality in the presence of PMF debris. In this study, we determined the joint effects of BC and PMF debris on soil biochemical properties and microbial communities. We conducted a soil microcosm experiment by adding BC formed by direct burning of wheat straw and PMF debris (polyethylene (PE) and biodegradable PMF (BP)) into soil at the dosages of 1 %, and soils were sampled on the 15th, 30th, and 100th day of soil incubation for high-throughput sequencing. The results showed that the degradation of PMF debris was accompanied by the release of microplastics (MPs). BC decreased NH4+-N (PE: 68.63 %; BP: 58.97 %) and NO3−-N (PE: 12.83 %; BP: 51.37 %) and increased available phosphorus (AP) (PE: 79.12 %; BP: 26.09 %) in soil containing PMF debris. There were significant differences in enzyme activity among all the treatments. High-throughput sequencing indicated that BC reduced bacterial and fungal richness and fungal diversity in PMF debris-exposed soil, whereas PMF debris and BC resulted in significant changes in the proportion of dominant phyla and genera of bacteria and fungi, which were affected by incubation time. Furthermore, BC affected microorganisms by influencing soil properties, and pH and N content were the main influencing factors. In addition, FAPRPTAX analysis indicated that BC and PMF debris affected soil C and N cycling. These findings provide new insights into the response of soil multifunctionality to BC and PMF debris.

A Semester of Hatha Yoga Has Comparable Effects to Physical Education for Children in Terms of Physical Activity and Psychosocial Indicators

Background/Objectives: As research on yoga with school children is growing, this study investigated the effects a semester of yoga versus physical education on children’s physical activity and psychosocial indicators. Methods: Physical activity and psychosocial variables were assessed at Time 1 (January/February) and Time 2 (April/May) through self-report surveys (n = 157; 63% female, age: m = 10.38, sd = 0.81 years) for the intervention (Hatha yoga classes) and control groups (standard physical education classes). The intervention group was also observed regarding pedometer and System for Observing Fitness Instruction Time data. Results: The results revealed a trend towards an increase for the control and a decrease for the intervention group in stress levels. The pedometer results showed a trend towards an increasing number of steps/min. Skill practice had the greatest increase with time dedicated to that activity. The observation results revealed a significant difference in activity from Time 1 to Time 2. The major differences were decreases in sitting and being very active, and an increase in walking. Conclusions: Given the observation data and our study design limitations, the study results showed similarities between Hatha yoga and physical education in terms of increasing physical activity levels and psychosocial variables; thus, yoga may be a viable alternative to children’s physical education in this regard.

Late Onset Systemic Lupus Erythematosus: Different Clinical, Serological Presentations and Damage Compared to Adult Lupus in Egypt

Abstract Background Comparing cases of adult onset and late onset systemic lupus erythematous (SLE) reveals significant differences in clinical, serological, disease activity, and damage score. Objective This study aimed to analyze clinical manifestations, laboratory data, serological markers, and prognosis of late-onset SLE (L-SLE) and for comparing with adult- onset SLE. Patients and Methods One hundred fifty individuals with SLE were included in a cross-sectional study conducted at Ain Shams University Hospital divide into Group 1: 100 cases with adult-onset (age of onset ≥ 19 years and below 50 years). Group 2: 50 Patients with L-SLE (age of onset ≥ 50 years). All patients were subjected to medical history, physical examination, disease activity measured by the SLE disease activity index (SLEDAI-2K) and a damage score. Laboratory investigations as complete blood count (CBC), serum creatinine, anticardiolipin antibodies, lupus anticoagulant, protein creatinine ratio, serum complement (C3, C4), anti-dsDNA antibody, and antinuclear antibodies (ANA). Results Mucocutaneous manifestations, frequency of hematuria, proteinuria, urinary cast, consumed C3, positive anti-dsDNA antibodies, anti-cardiolipin antibody and lupus anticoagulant titers had considerably greater rates in-group 1 compared to group 2 (P-value &amp;lt;0.05) while group 2 had significantly more musculoskeletal symptoms (P-value &amp;lt;0.05). The SLEDAI scores of the two groups were equivalent, however the damage index was greater in group 2 (P-value 0.00). Neuropsychiatric, cutaneous, renal, and skin damage were more frequent in group 1, while musculoskeletal, endocrinal, pulmonary, cardiovascular and ocular damage were more frequent in- group 2. Conclusion L-SLE is different from adult onset SLE with more frequent damage.

Comparing and Analyzing the Physical and Functional Concerns of Post Breast Cancer Surgery Patients Who Received Physical Therapy for Lymphedema After Surgery to Those Who Did Not Receive Physical Therapy After Surgery

Objective: This pilot research project examined the physical and functional concerns of patients who had breast cancer surgery followed by receiving skilled physical therapy or lymphedema therapy services for more than or less than three months. Methods: This research study utilized the Qualtrics system to create a survey for the participants to complete. After completing the survey, the researchers divided the participants into two groups. The researchers analyzed the data using SPSS to run independent sample t-tests. Results: The study results show no significant difference in limb size and self-care activities between the two groups who received physical therapy.

Cutibacterium acnes contamination does not enhance the proinflammatory profile of platelet concentrates.

Cutibacterium acnes, a common anaerobic platelet concentrate (PC) contaminant, has been associated with rare mild adverse transfusion reactions and is often considered a harmless commensal. Notably, C. acnes can cause chronic infections and has been shown to induce the release of proinflammatory cytokines by immune cells. Since elevated concentrations of proinflammatory factors in PCs have been linked to noninfectious adverse reactions, this study aimed to assess whether C. acnes could elicit the release and accumulation of proinflammatory factors during PC storage, thereby enhancing the risk of such reactions. Four ABO-matched buffy coat PCs were pooled and split into six units, each were inoculated with either saline (negative control), a Staphylococcus aureus isolate (positive control, 30 colony forming units [CFU]/unit), or four C. acnes PC isolates (10 CFU/mL) and stored at 20-24°C with agitation. Bacterial counts, platelet activation, and concentration of proinflammatory factors were assessed on days 0, 3, and 5. N = 3. C. acnes counts remained stable, while S. aureus proliferated reaching 108CFU/mL by the end of PC storage. By day 5, no significant differences in platelet activation or proinflammatory cytokine profiles were observed in C. acnes-contaminated PCs compared to the negative control (p > .05), while there was a significant increase (p ≤ .05) in sCD40L concentration (day 3), and platelet activation and IL-8 concentration (day 5) in S. aureus-contaminated units. C. acnes contamination does not promote the accumulation of proinflammatory factors in the absence of proliferation during storage and may not enhance the risk of inflammatory reactions when transfused to patients.

Dietary sugar kelp (Saccharina latissima) consumption did not attenuate atherosclerosis in low-density lipoprotein receptor knockout mice.

We previously demonstrated the beneficial effects of U.S.-grown sugar kelp (Saccharina latissima), a brown seaweed, on reducing serum triglycerides (TG) and total cholesterol (TC) and protecting against inflammation and fibrosis in the adipose tissue of diet-induced obesity mice. In this current study, we aimed to explore whether the dietary consumption of sugar kelp can prevent atherosclerosis using low-density lipoprotein receptor knockout (Ldlr KO) mice fed an atherogenic diet. Eight-week-old male Ldlr KO mice were fed either an atherogenic high-fat/high-cholesterol control (HF/HC) diet or a HF/HC diet supplemented with 6% (w/w) sugar kelp (HF/HC-SK) for 16 weeks. Consumption of sugar kelp significantly increased the body weight gain without altering fat mass and lean mass. Also, there were no significant differences in energy expenditure and physical activities between the groups. The two groups did not show significant differences in serum and hepatic TG and TC levels or the hepatic expression of genes involved in cholesterol and lipid metabolism. Although serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT) activity did not differ significantly between the two groups, there were significant increases in the expression of macrophage markers, including adhesion G protein-coupled receptor E1 and cluster of differentiation 68, as well as tumor necrosis factor alpha in the HF/HC-SK group compared to the HF/HC mice. The consumption of sugar kelp did not elicit a significant effect on the development of aortic lesions. Moreover, lipopolysaccharide-stimulated splenocytes isolated from HF/HC-SK-fed mice showed no significant changes in the mRNA levels of pro-inflammatory genes compared with those from the HF/HC mice. In summary, the consumption of dietary sugar kelp did not elicit anti-atherogenic and hepatoprotective effects in Ldlr KO mice.

Anti-Inflammatory, Wound Healing, and Anti-Diabetic Effects of Pure Active Compounds Present in the Ryudai Gold Variety of Curcuma longa.

Turmeric (Curcuma longa) contains curcumin, demethoxycurcumin (DMC), and bisdemethoxycurcumin (BDMC). Nevertheless, curcumin is the most researched active ingredient for its numerous pharmacological effects. We investigated the impact of these curcuminoids found in Ryudai gold, an approved cultivar of Curcuma longa, on wound healing, inflammation, and diabetes. Sub-planter injections of carrageenan induced acute paw inflammation in rats. The wound-healing ability of 1% curcuminoids was examined by making a 6 mm round wound on the shaved dorsum of the mice with a biopsy punch. A single intraperitoneal injection of streptozotocin (50 mg/kg) was used to induce diabetes in mice. Curcuminoids at a dose rate of 100 mg/kg body weight were used with feed and as a gastric gavage to treat diabetes and inflammation in experimental animals. Paw thickness was measured at 1, 3, and 6 h following carrageenan injection. After three hours, mean paw volume was 58% in carrageenan-injected mice, which was 35%, 37%, and 31% in the curcumin, DMC, and BDMC groups, respectively. Histopathology of the paw tissue demonstrated severe infiltration of inflammatory cells and thickening of the dermis, which were remarkably improved by the curcuminoids. The wound-healing abilities were significantly higher in the curcumin- (95.0%), DMC- (93.17%), and BDMC-treated (89.0%) groups, in comparison to that of the control (65.09%) group at day nine. There were no significant differences in wound-healing activity among the groups treated with 1% curcuminoids throughout the study. Streptozotocin-induced diabetes was characterized by an increased blood glucose (552.2 mg/dL) and decreased body weight (31.2 g), compared to that of the control rats (145.6 mg/dL and 46.8 g blood glucose and body weight, respectively). It also caused an increase in serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT; 44.2 U/L) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST; 55.8 U/L) compared to that of the control group (18.6 U/L and 20.1 U/L, respectively). Histopathological examination of the liver showed that diabetes caused hepatic cellular necrosis, congestion of the central vein, and parenchymatous degeneration. However, all three curcuminoids significantly decreased blood glucose levels, ALT, and AST and improved the histopathological score of the liver. These results evidenced that not only curcumin but also DMC and BDMC have potent anti-inflammatory, wound healing, and anti-diabetic efficacy, and the Ryudai gold variety of turmeric could be used as a functional food supplement.

Neuroimaging evaluation of the long term impact of a novel paired meditation practice on brain function.

A growing number of advanced neuroimaging studies have compared brain structure and function in long term meditators to non-meditators. The goal is to determine if there may be long term effects on the brain from practicing meditation. In this paper, we present new data on the long term effects of a novel meditation practice in which the focus is on clitoral stimulation. The findings from such a study have implications for potential therapeutic uses with regard to various neurological or psychiatric conditions. We evaluated the cerebral glucose metabolism in 40 subjects with an extended history (>1 year of practice, 2-3 times per week) performing the meditation practice called Orgasmic Meditation (OM) and compared their brains to a group of non-meditating healthy controls (N = 19). Both meditation and non-meditation subjects underwent brain PET after injection with 148 to 296 MBq of FDG using a standard imaging protocol. Resting FDG PET scans of the OM group were compared to the resting scans of healthy, non-meditating, controls using statistical parametric mapping. The OM group showed significant differences in metabolic activity at rest compared to the controls. Specifically, there was significantly lower metabolism in select areas of the frontal, temporal, and parietal lobes, as well as the anterior cingulate, insula, and thalamus, in the OM group compared to the controls. In addition, there were notable distinctions between the males and females with the females demonstrating significantly lower metabolism in the thalamus and insula. Overall, these findings suggest that the long term meditation practitioners of OM have different patterns of resting brain metabolism. Since these areas of the brain in which OM practitioners differ from controls are involved in cognition, attention, and emotional regulation, such findings have implications for understanding how this meditation practice might affect practitioners over long periods of time.

Fabrication of a coral-like barium titanate nano-piezoelectric coating and its effect on promoting osteogenic differentiation of rat bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells in vitro

Objective: To investigate the biocompatibility of coral-like barium titanate nano-piezoelectric coatings and the influence of ultrasound-excited piezoelectric effect on the early osteogenic differentiation. Methods: The barium titanate nano-piezoelectric coating (the coating group) was prepared on the surface of titanium metal by anodic oxidation, hydrothermal reaction and high-temperature annealing, and polished titanium specimens were used as control group. The surface morphology, composition, and crystal phase and hydrophilicity of the two groups of titanium specimens were characterized using scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy and contact angle meter. The piezoelectric properties of the materials were characterized by piezoresponse force microscopy. Rat bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSC) were cultured and identified and seeded the surface of titanium specimens in two groups. The cells seeded on blank culture plates were used as blank group. After low intensity pulsed ultrasound intervention, cell proliferation and live/dead staining were detected to evaluate cytocompatibility of the coatings. Alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity of each group was detected by ALP staining kit, and the expression of osteogenesis-related genes [integrin, bone morphogenetic protein 2 (BMP-2), Runt-related transcription factor 2 (RUNX2)] was detected by real-time fluorescent quantitative PCR (RT-qPCR) to evaluate the effect of the coating on promoting the early osteogenic differentiation of BMSC. Results: The surface of titanium specimens in the coating group showed a uniform coral-like morphology, and the diameter of the coral tentacles was 70-100 nm. The main component was tetragonal barium titanate. The surface hydrophilicity of the coating group (water contact angle 10.12°± 0.93°) was significantly better than that of the control group (water contact angle 78.32°±0.71°) (F= 10 165.91, P<0.001). The coating has a stable piezoelectric property with a piezoelectric constant of about 5 pC/N. Cell experiments showed that, with or without ultrasound, the cell proliferation activity of the coating group was significantly lower than that of the blank group and the control group on the third day (P<0.05). On the fifth day, with or without ultrasound, there was no significant difference in cell proliferation activity between the three groups (P>0.05). After 7 days of culture, the ALP activity of the coating group was significantly higher than that of the blank group and the control group (P<0.05). The results of RT-qPCR showed that the mRNA expression of integrin and BMP-2 in the coating group with ultrasound was significantly higher than that in the other groups with ultrasound, and was higher than that of the coating group without ultrasound (P<0.05). The expression of integrin mRNA in the control group with ultrasound was significantly higher than that in the control group without ultrasound (P<0.05). The expression of RUNX2 mRNA in the coating group with ultrasound was significantly higher than that in the coating group without ultrasound (P<0.05). Conclusions: The coral-like barium titanate nano-piezoelectric coating exhibits favorable biocompatibility and stable piezoelectric property, and facilitates the early osteogenic differentiation of BMSC under the excitation of low-intensity pulsed ultrasound.

Efficacy of ozonated olive oil against peri-implant microbes isolated from peri-implantitis.

This study aimed to investigate the antibacterial and antimicrobial activity of ozone gel against oral biofilms grown on titanium dental implant discs. The experiment used medical grade five titanium discs on which peri-implant isolated biofilms were grown. The experimental groups were control, Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans) and Granulicatella adiacens (G. adiacens), (n = 6). The oral microbes grown on titanium discs were exposed to ozone gel for 3 minutes and the antibacterial activity was assessed by turbidity test and adherence test for the antibiofilm activity test. Bacterial morphology and confluence were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), (n=3). Two bacterial species were identified from the peri-implant sample, S. mutans and G. adiacens. The results showed that adding ozone to the bacterial biofilm on titanium dental implants did not exhibit significant antibacterial activity against S. mutans. Moreover, there was no significant difference in antibiofilm activity between control and treatment groups. However, significant antibacterial and antibiofilm effect was exhibited by ozone gel against G. adiacens. Ozonated olive oil can be considered as a potential antimicrobial agent for disinfecting dental implant surfaces and treating peri-implantitis.

Psychophysiological and Psychological Responses of Teenage Students Conducting Computer Programming Activities Combined with Horticultural Activities

This study investigated whether coding (computer programming) and horticultural activities alone and combined have psychophysiological and psychological effects. Compulsory computer programming has been required in elementary schools in South Korea since 2018. A total of 34 participants, who were students between the ages of 11 and 16 years were involved in the study. Participants undertook the following activities in random order: connecting components, coding, horticultural activities, and combining coding and horticultural activities (run program, horticultural activities, and coding modifications). Brain waves were measured during the activity, and a subjective self-report evaluation was conducted at the end of each activity. In a spectral edge frequency of 50% of the alpha spectrum band, which indicates a comfortable, stable, and relaxed state, there was a significant difference in the left prefrontal pole when participants performed a combination of coding and horticultural activities (P &lt; 0.001). In addition, there were significant differences in the coding activities based on horticultural activities (P &lt; 0.05, P &lt; 0.001), with a relatively low beta, indicating attention and alertness; relative mid beta, indicating active awareness; ratio of SMR to theta, indicating focused attention; and the ratio of mid beta to theta, indicating concentrated focus. It is judged that activities involving plant engagement can contribute to comfort, stability, focused attention, and positive effects in response to active stimuli. As a result of a subjective evaluation, it was found that horticultural activities had a positive effect on participants’ emotions (P &lt; 0.01). This study demonstrates that horticulture-based coding activities have a positive impact on physiological relaxation and cognitive enhancement, and are also associated with subjectively reported positive emotions.

Operando Spectroscopy to Understand Dynamic Structural Changes of Solid Catalysts.

Solid materials like heterogeneous catalysts are highly dynamic and continuously tend to change when exposed to the reaction environment. To understand the catalyst system under true reaction conditions,operando spectroscopy is the key to unravel small changes, which can ultimately lead to a significant difference in catalytic activity and selectivity. This was also the topic of the 7th International Congress on Operando Spectroscopy in Switzerland in 2023. In this article, we discuss various examples to introduce and demonstrate the importance of this area, including examples from emission control for clean air (e.g. CO oxidation), oxidation catalysis in the chemical industry (e.g. oxidation of isobutene), future power-to-X processes (electrocatalysis, CO2 hydrogenation to methanol), and non-oxidative conversion of methane. All of these processes are equally relevant to the chemical industry. Complementary operando techniques such as X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS), and Raman spectroscopy were utilized to derive the ultimate structure of the catalyst. The variety of conditions requires distinctly different operando cells that can reach a temperature range of 400-1000 °C and pressures up to 40 bar. The best compromise for both the spectroscopy and the catalytic reaction is needed. As an outlook, we highlight emerging methods such as modulation-excitation spectroscopy (MES) or quick-extended X-ray absorption fine structure (QEXAFS) and X-ray photon in/out techniques, which can provide better sensitivity or extend X-ray based operando studies.
