- In current scenario, where individuals spend the majority of their time indoors, the quality of the indoor air has become increasingly crucial. This research paper investigates the role of optimizing Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) as a proactive strategy for mitigating Sick Building Syndrome (SBS) within built environments. This research aims to conduct a comprehensive analysis of these standards. Moreover, the multifaceted nature of IAQ management is explored through the inclusion of parameters like radon (Rn), relative humidity (RH), and temperature. These factors not only contribute to indoor air quality but also affect occupants' comfort and well-being. By considering both chemical and environmental factors. The Impact of Sick Building Syndrome and Physical Air Quality on Staff Productivity in the Hospital's Outpatient Room of Rumah Sakit Umum Daerah Haji Indonesia

Introduction: The concept of SBS as an occupational health problem is related to air pollution, inadequate ventilation, and indoor air quality in office buildings. Lighting in the RSUD Haji Building still does not meet general and local lighting standards. Complaints of eye fatigue are also felt by administrative staff in the outpatient room of the RSUD Haji Indonesia. This research aimed to examine how physical air quality and sick building syndrome give impact to officer productivity in the outpatient room of the RSUD Haji Indonesia. Methods: This kind of study used a cross-sectional design and was observational. Simple random sampling was utilized in the sampling process, and logistic and linear regression were used to analyze the data. Results and Discussion: Lighting in outpatient rooms that is 100% compliant with standards. The percentage of rooms without proper temperature norms was 21.42%. The rate of rooms with inadequate noise requirements was 17.86%. Spaces without 50% relative humidity norms. SBS symptoms: 10.3% of respondents said they always had itchy skin, and 27.6% said they frequently experienced extreme stress and exhaustion symptoms. Conclusion: There was no effect of temperature, lighting, or noise in the room regarding the sick building syndrome symptoms of officers in the outpatient room, except humidity. However, most workers felt SBS symptoms. Officer productivity was not impacted by the physical quality of the air or by sick building syndrome symptoms.

Indoor air quality and sick building syndrome symptoms in administrative office at public university

Sick Building Syndrome (SBS) is an illness among workers linked to time spent in a building. This study aimed to investigate the Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) and symptoms of Sick Building Syndrome (SBS) among administrative office workers. The IAQ parameters consist of ventilation performance indicators, and physical and chemical parameters were measured using specified instruments for three days during weekdays. The SBS symptoms were assessed by a questionnaire adopted from the Industry Code of Practice of Indoor Air Quality (ICOP-IAQ) 2010 among 19 employees from the office in East Coast Malaysia. Relationship between past symptoms and present symptoms which are draught (past symptoms) with feeling heavy headed (present symptoms) (r = 0.559, p < 0.05), room temperature too high (past symptoms) was highly correlated with feeling heavy headed (present symptoms) (r = 0.598, p < 0.01) and cough (present symptoms) (r = 0.596, p < 0.01). Room temperature (past symptoms) has a positive medium relationship with cough (present symptoms) (r = 0.477, p < 0.05) and scaling itching scalp or ears (present symptoms) has a relationship between stuffy bad air (r = 0.475, p < 0.05) and dry air (r = 0.536, p < 0.05). There was a significant association between RH with drowsiness (χ2 = 7.090, p = 0.049) and dizziness (χ2 = 7.090, p = 0.049). The association was found between temperature and SBS symptoms between temperature with headache (χ2 = 7.574, p = 0.051), feeling heavy-headed (χ2 = 8.090, p = 0.046), and skin rash itchiness (χ2 = 7.451, p = 0.044). Air movement also showed a positive association with symptoms of feeling heavy-headed (x2 = 8.726, p = 0.021). PM10 has positive significance with SBSS which are feeling heavy-headed (χ2 = 7.980, p = 0.023), and eyer's irritation (χ2 = 7.419, p = 0.038). The conclusion of this study showed that there were positive significant between temperature and relative humidity toward SBSS.

Comparing classic regression with credit scorecard model for predicting sick building syndrome risk: A machine learning perspective in environmental assessment

Quarantine policy for COVID-19 control brings outdoor risks to indoor, leading to unintended exposure to sick building syndrome (SBS) symptoms. The aim of this study was to establish a comparative framework for the application of multiple logistic regression (classic regression) and credit scorecard models based on Logistic Regression (logit) and Decision Tree (DT) models in predicting the risk of developing SBS among citizens of Alborz province in Iran. The results of the classic regression indicated that the number of residents in the home (OR = 1.127, 95% CI: 1.017–1.760), were shown to have a significant association with total SBS symptoms. In the credit scorecard model utilizing the logit model, the variable with the greatest predictive significance for total SBS as well as general, and mucosal symptoms was work status. Furthermore, in the credit scorecard model based on DT model, the levels of PM2.5 and PM10, were the most significant predictors for the total SBS and dermal symptoms, respectively. As such, ozone (O3) emerged as the most influential factor in predicting both general and mucosal symptoms. As credit scoring, the greatest base score (109.86) was associated with mucosal symptoms, while the lowest base score (82.10) was associated with general symptoms. In conclusion, the DT model exhibited superior performance as a scoring model compared to the logit model and classic regression, as evidenced by its higher performance indexes. As such, only dermal symptoms exhibited mean scores higher than the base scores, suggesting that the overall quality of the indoor environments was generally poor.

Assessment of the Air Cleaning Performance and Humidity and Temperature Control by Five Evergreen Woody Plants

Indoor air quality (IAQ) directly affects human health. The increase in PM and CO2 concentration indoors caused an increase in the prevalence of sick building syndrome (SBS) symptoms. Plants could contribute to reducing particulate matter (PM) and CO2. This study identifies the most efficient evergreen plant species for improving indoor air quality by assessing the ability of five different indigenous Korean evergreen plant species to reduce PM and CO2 and regulate humidity and temperature under indoor environmental conditions in acrylic chambers. The clean air delivery rates (CADR) were calculated to evaluate the efficacy of plants in reducing PM and CO2. We assessed the performance of removing the five study plants on PM1 (~0.68–3.01 m3/h/leaf area), PM2.5 (~0.73–3.08 m3/h/leaf area), PM10 (~0.67–3.04 m3/h/leaf area), and CO2 (~0.48–1.04 m3/h/leaf area). The species Ilex pedunculosa, Pittosporum tobira, and Gardenia jasminoides were the most effective at reducing PM. The CADR of CO2 also differed among the five plant species and corresponded to their photosynthetic rate. Viburnum odoratissimum var. awabuki, which had the high photosynthetic rate, was most effective at reducing CO2. By contrast, PM reduction was correlated with plant leaf structure. Plants with a high leaf density can accumulate more PM. The plants were also able to control temperature and humidity. The average temperature of the control chamber was higher, and the humidity was lower than that of the plant chambers. In this study, the five evergreen species effectively reduced air pollutants and can be used to improve IAQ.

Association Between Air Microbiological Exposure With Sick Building Syndrome (SBS) among College Dormitory Students in Public University

Introduction: Microbiological pollutants in indoor air can lead to sick building syndrome (SBS). A conducive academic environment in university dormitories requires healthy indoor air quality to enhance student performance. This study aimed to determine the association between indoor air microbiological exposure and SBS among college dormitory students at a public university. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 112 male and female college dormitory students who stayed in the public university dormitory for more than three months. Respondents were given a self-administered questionnaire-based NIOSH Indoor Environmental Quality Survey. 14 houses were selected for the measurement of indoor air quality which included PM2.5, PM10, relative humidity (%), temperature (°C), air velocity (m/s), indoor bacterial concentration (cfu/m3), and indoor mould concentration (cfu/m3). Results: Higher percentages of SBS symptoms were reported among female (94.6%) college dormitory students compared to male (82.1%). A significant difference in itching symptom on the arms and forearms was found among individuals of different genders (p&lt;0.05). Indoor air parameters such as temperature (OR = 2.56, 95% CI = 2.66-9.87), relative humidity (OR = 1.77, 95% CI = 1.54 – 5.79), indoor bacteria concentration (OR=2.28, 95% CI = 2.48 – 10.93), and indoor mould concentration (OR=2.59, 95% CI = 1.75 – 8.98) were significantly associated with the recent SBS symptoms. Multiple logistic regression showed that the most significant predictor of SBS was indoor mould concentration. Conclusion: Exposure to high concentrations of indoor bacteria and mould, high temperatures, and high relative humidity influenced the prevalence of SBS among college dormitory students. Further assessment and preventive action need to be taken to reduce the exposure of indoor air microbiological to the students.

Home environment exposure and sick building syndrome (SBS) symptoms among adults in southern China: Health associations in 2010 and 2019

We studied time trends in home environment and sick building syndrome (SBS) symptoms in a repeat study in five cities in southern China. Moreover, we studied associations between home environment exposure and SBS symptoms. Parents from randomly selected day care centers were invited. One parent per family answered a questionnaire on the home environment and their own SBS symptoms. Data collection was performed in two surveys in 2010 and 2019 (27,292 participants in 2010 and 32,073 in 2019). We used two-level logistic regression to analyze health associations. Asthma decreased from 1.7% to 1.5% (P < 0.05) but allergic rhinitis increased from 6.5% to 16.4% (P < 0.001). All SBS symptoms decreased from 2010 to 2019 (all P < 0.001). Most aspects of the home environment improved from 2010 to 2019 but there were less cleaning, more cats, dogs, and urbanization in 2019. Redecoration, new furniture, and pests were associated with most types of SBS symptoms, similarly in 2010 and 2019. Environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) was associated with SBS symptoms in 2019 only. In conclusion, prevalence of SBS symptoms among young parents in southern China decreased from 2010 to 2019 but allergic rhinitis increased. Cockroaches, rats, mice, mosquitoes or flies can be consistent biological risk factors for SBS symptoms. Redecoration, buying new furniture and traffic air pollution are other risk factors for SBS symptoms. Daily cleaning, frequently putting bedding to sunshine, and having a fan in the bathroom can be protective factors. ETS is an emerging risk factor for SBS symptoms.

Estimating perceived indoor air quality and environmental satisfaction using a camera

Although indoor environmental monitoring data are increasingly available, they often fail to accurately capture personal environmental perception, comfort, and satisfaction. This disconnection has led to a growing interest in using real-time feedback from building users to improve the control of heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning systems and reduce energy waste. However, traditional questionnaire-based surveys only provide a snapshot at the time of investigation and suffer from a variety of bias sources. To address this, this paper proposes a novel camera-based method for estimating perceived indoor air quality and environmental satisfaction by analysing facial expressions. We conducted indoor air pollution exposure experiments on 24 healthy adults in twin environmental chambers. Their changes in facial expressions were compared between different exposure conditions and the potential correlation between facial expressions and perceived air quality, environmental satisfaction, and self-reported sick building syndrome symptoms was explored. Preliminary results indicate that a common RGB camera can repeatably detect facial expressions from the same subject. Also, results from a subset of five subjects suggest moderate differences in concentration, calmness, contemplation, and tiredness expressions between the two air quality conditions.

Dampness and mould in Chinese homes and sick building syndrome (SBS) symptoms – Associations with climate, family size, cleaning and ventilation

We investigated associations between dampness in Chinese homes and sick building syndrome (SBS) symptoms and studied the role of climate, family size, cleaning and ventilation for dampness, mould and SBS. A questionnaire survey was done in 2019–2020 among adults in five cities (32349 participants) and data on outdoor climate was collected. Multilevel logistic regression was used to calculate adjusted odds ratios (ORs). In total, 2.2% had rhinitis, 1.8% eye, 1.6% throat and 2.9% skin symptoms, 2.1% headache and 8.7% fatigue (weekly symptoms). Overall, 12.1% reported indoor mould, 5.7% damp bedding, 5.3% mould odour and 33.8% humid air in current home. Mould was associated with all symptoms (ORs 1.86–2.15 for minor mold growth and 1.65–3.45 for major mould growth). Damp bedding was associated with all symptoms (ORs 2.18–2.80 for minor dampness and 2.51–8.03 for major dampness). Mould odour was associated with all symptoms (ORs 1.84–2.77 for sometimes odour and ORs 3.78–7.80 for weekly odour). Perception of humid air was associated with all symptoms. ORs increased by number of dampness signs. Precipitation, outdoor relative air humidity and temperature increased dampness, mould and SBS symptoms. Large family size increased dermal symptoms. Daily floor cleaning, airing in winter, putting bedding to sunshine and mechanical ventilation in the bathroom reduced dampness, mould and SBS symptoms. In conclusion, mould and dampness in Chinese homes can increase rhinitis and SBS-symptoms in a dose-response manner. A warmer and more humid climate can increase, and cleaning and ventilation in the home can decrease dampness, mould and SBS symptoms.

The Implications of Sick Building Syndrome (SBS) on Students’ Productivity in Hostel Buildings

In recent years, sick building syndrome (SBS) has emerged as a major issue across Asia. The aim of this study is to investigate associations between the SBS and its implication towards students' well-being and productivity in four (4) hostel buildings in Taiping, Perak. Four hundred (n = 400) questionnaires were distributed on purpose to the students as part of a quantitative research design. The most significant effect of Sick Building Syndrome on pupils is a disruption of their ability to concentrate in the classroom. Symptoms such as fatigue and drowsiness, dizziness, sore throat, and dryness are the most common ones that students experience when residing in hostels. Totally, 61% reported being unable to concentrate on their studies, 38% are unhealthy and inactive in the hostel, and 19% do not get enough sleep. This research is important for students, researchers, educational institutions, and society as it addresses the prevalence of SBS symptoms in building environments. Its findings can contribute to creating healthier and more productive living conditions for students.

Background: Sick Building Syndrome (SBS) is a syndrome caused by the work environment. SBS is stated as a health problem in the work environment which is related to poor indoor air quality. The Central Java Provincial Health Office building is in the city center so it is an environment prone to air pollution. The purpose of this study was to determine the factors that influence SBS symptoms in Central Java Provincial Health Office employees. Methods: This study uses an analytic study type with a cross-sectional approach. The sample in this study were 73 respondents. The sampling technique used purposive sampling technique. The instruments used were questionnaires and measurements. The data analysis used the chi square statistical test. Results: The results of this study showed that among the 73 respondents there was a relationship between age and SBS symptoms (p=0.020), there was a relationship between gender and SBS symptoms (p=0.010), there was a relationship between years of service and SBS symptoms (p=0.020 ), there was a relationship between room temperature and SBS symptoms (p=0.007), there was a relationship between the number of bacteria and SBS symptoms (p=0.004), there was no relationship between room air humidity and dust levels and SBS symptoms. Conclusion: Age, gender, length of service, and number of bacteria are factors associated with SBS symptoms. In an effort to reduce the risk of SBS symptoms, workers need to relax body muscles, optimize the use of AC, increase AC maintenance, turn off the AC for a moment and open windows periodically.

Sick building syndrome in air-conditioned museum

ABSTRACT Exposure to indoor contaminants in air-conditioned buildings can cause serious health effects to their occupants. The failure to control indoor air contaminants is one of the factors that contribute to poor indoor air quality (IAQ) and is a major contributor to sick building syndrome (SBS) symptoms. This study aims to investigate the relationship between the maintenance of mechanical ventilation and air conditioning (MVAC) that is installed in museums towards IAQ and SBS. Data were collected through site visits and observations with a combination of field measurements and a questionnaire survey. The field measurements results show that several locations in the museums were in a state of heat discomfort. The recorded measurement of air velocity was very low and the average level of HCHO concentrations are above the permissible level. The correlation test between the satisfaction level of MVAC maintenance on IAQ and SBS also shows significant relationships, indicating that MVAC maintenance in the museum affects the comfort and health of the occupants.

Effects of indoor temperature on office workers’ performance: an experimental study based on subjective assessments, neurobehavioral tests, and physiological measurements

Indoor temperature has a critical impact on the performance of office workers. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of indoor temperature on work performance through subjective assessments, neurobehavioral tests, and physiological measurements. The experiment was conducted in a controlled office environment. Under each temperature condition, participants voted on their perception of thermal sensation, thermal satisfaction, and sick building syndrome (SBS) symptoms. Participants were given neurobehavioral tests based on a ten-item task, and their body temperature, blood pressure, heart rate, and blood oxygen saturation were measured before and after the tests. The study showed that the effect of indoor temperature on the test tasks varied greatly and depended on the task type. The indoor temperature, thermal sensation votes, and body temperature for optimum work performance were 17 °C, −0.57, and 36.4 °C, respectively. Work performance was positively correlated with thermal satisfaction votes and negatively correlated with sleepiness intensity. Practitioner summary: Work performance is closely related to indoor temperature. This study evaluated the effect of indoor temperature on work performance through subjective assessments, neurobehavioral tests, and physiological measurements. The relationships between work performance and indoor temperature, perceived votes, and physiological parameters were established, respectively.

Energy, SBS symptoms, and productivity in Swiss open-space offices: Economic evaluation of standard, actual, and optimum scenarios

The fundamental aspiration of new-generation high-performing buildings is to reduce energy use while securing indoor environmental quality conducive to human health and productivity. However, existing frameworks for identifying Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) of buildings are sporadic and limited to a few parameters. Based on two Swiss open-space buildings, this paper demonstrates an economic comparison combining three KPIs: health (represented by sick building syndrome (SBS) symptoms), occupants’ productivity (based on the thermal environment and ventilation), and operational energy for heating (based on building simulations using measured inputs). Monetization translated various criteria into the same unit currency and compared them on equal terms. Three scenarios for human- and energy-related performance analysis were actual (considering measured data), standard (using parameters from the national standard), and optimal (maximized productivity). The actual environment in case studies measured in the Fall and Winter seasons was relatively warm, with poor ventilation in one of the two buildings as no mechanical ventilation was on. Therefore, there was some loss of productivity (0.11–0.4%) and SBS symptoms (e.g., dry eyes, fatigue) present in both buildings resulting in up to 2 times the difference between the energy and human costs. The minimum energy costs for the standard scenario indicated that standard settings prioritize energy objectives. Oppositely, energy costs were the highest (47.6–69.6%) in the optimal scenario minimizing the human-related costs but not the weekly SBS symptoms. The analysis presented highlights the conflicting goals when one parameter is prioritized over another one, thus demonstrating the importance of a multi-criteria approach.

Gambaran Kejadian Sick Building Syndrome (SBS) pada Pegawai Kantor PT. PLN (Persero) UP3 Surabaya Selatan Kota Surabaya

One of the health problem phenomena related to indoor air quality is Sick Building Syndrome (SBS). Sick Building Syndrome (SBS) is a collection of symptoms felt by people who are in the building. The purpose of this study is to provide an overview of the impact of the Sick Building Syndrome (SBS) incident. This research is an analytical observational study. Time of research: February - March 2023. PT. PLN (Persero) UP3 Ngagel, South Surabaya, Surabaya City. from the interview results, there were 45% of respondents who experienced at least 12 symptoms from 20 categories of Sick Building Syndrome (SBS) complaints among office employees of PT. PLN (Persero) UP3 South Surabaya, City of Surabaya. Conclusion: Based on the characteristics of the respondents, it can be seen that the working age of the respondents is mostly&gt; 35 years with the most sex, namely men and the dominant working mass is classified as old &gt; 10 years and smoking habits, namely 73% of respondents do not smoke and 28 respondents have good psychosocial conditions and 2 respondents had poor psychosocial conditions. Of all the symptoms of Sick Building Syndrome, (SBS) complaints that are often felt are dry / hoarse throat (36%), dry skin (29%), skin is often reddish, irritated feeling (21%), rash on the skin, red spots ( 29%), Eye irritation (eyes are often watery/red/itchy, etc.) (36%), Runny nose, sneezing (36%), Chest tightness (36%), Flu-like symptoms (50%), Head dizziness, spinning (29%), Frequent headaches (29%), Drowsiness (36%), Chronic fatigue, lethargy (36%).

Indoor environmental quality in offices and risk of health and productivity complaints at work: A literature review

Many service jobs are carried out in modern offices, with individual offices being increasingly replaced by open-plan settings. The high number of adult people working in office buildings, in most situations sharing the workplace with many others during a considerable part of their daily time, highlights the importance of providing adequate guidance to ensure the quality of office environments. This paper aims to summarize existing data on modern offices' indoor environmental quality (IEQ) conditions in terms of air pollution (volatile organic compounds (VOC), particulate matter and inorganic pollutants), thermal comfort, lighting and acoustics and the respective associations with health and productivity-related outcomes in workers. Evidence shows that although many offices present acceptable IEQ, some office settings can have levels of air pollutants, hygrothermal conditions/thermal comfort and illuminance that do not comply with the existing international standards and recommendations. In addition, findings suggest the existence of significant associations between the assessed IEQ indicators and the risk of detrimental effects on health and productivity of office workers. In particular, airborne particles, CO2, O3 and thermal comfort were linked with the prevalence of sick building syndrome symptoms. Poor lighting and acoustical quality have also been associated with malaise and physiological stress among office workers. Similarly, better productivity levels have been registered for good indoor air quality conditions, in terms of VOC, airborne particles and CO2. Overall, the evidence revised in this work suggests that for promoting health and productivity recommendations for office building managers include actions to ensure that: i) all relevant IEQ indicators are periodically controlled to ensure that levels comply with recommended limit values; ii) declared indoor pollution sources are avoided; iii) adequate ventilation and acclimatization strategies are implemented; and iv) there is the possibility of conduct personalized adjustments to environmental conditions (following workers' preferences).

Indoor PM2.5, home environmental factors and lifestyles are related to sick building syndrome among residents in Nanjing, China

The cause of Sick Building Syndrome has attracted worldwide attention. Studies on the correlation between indoor air pollution and SBS symptoms are still limited. A cross-sectional study was conducted to investigate the prevalence of sick building syndrome symptoms and its associated factors among residents in Nanjing, China. 1281 residents participated in a questionnaire survey, and information on their dwelling building characteristics, home environmental factors, lifestyles and sick building symptoms was obtained. Indoor PM2.5 concentrations were modeled by the multizone airflow and contaminant transport program. The prevalence of general, mucosal and dermal symptoms were 14.4%, 9.5% and 5.1%, respectively. Females, residents with respiratory disease history and from lower income families, reported more sick building syndrome symptoms. Painting peeling, indoor PM2.5 concentration and environmental smoking exposure were significantly associated with general symptoms. Residents’ satisfaction with the indoor environment was a significant predictor of sick building syndrome symptoms. Ventilation by opening windows for more than 6 h per day was found to be a protective factor for mucosal and dermal symptoms. Besides this, residential building characteristics such as building construction year, floor area were also associated with dermal symptoms. The study indicates that improving indoor environmental quality and keeping good lifestyle habits are important to prevent residents suffering from sick building syndrome symptoms.

Experimental study on the supply air characteristics and thermal comfort of a novel personalized ventilation air terminal device

Personalized ventilation (PV) has a significant potential for improving thermal comfort, inhaled air quality and energy efficiency. A novel PV air terminal device (ATD) based on the function of bath showers was evaluated to determine discomfort related to thermal sensation, draughts, dry eyes and skin irritation. The supply air characteristics and thermal comfort were analyzed using objective and subjective experiments in an environmental chamber. Thirty college students participated in the subjective experiments. Results showed that the proposed PV ATD could provide uniform distributions of air velocity at the human head and chest. Compared with the conventional round-monitor panel ATD, the proposed PV ATD can provide an improved cooling effect, wherein overall thermal sensation was reduced by 0.56 scale, showing a potential for energy saving. Moreover, the proposed PV ATD could produce a highly uniform distribution of local thermal sensation (LTS). Compared with the conventional PV, the proposed PV ATD could reduce the standard deviation of distribution of LTS by 41.7% and reduce overall thermal discomfort by 45.5%. Fewer sick building syndrome symptoms at a lower supply airflow rate of 6.3 L/s was achieved. Consequently, the proposed PV ATD could improve the comfort performance with the usage of lower supply airflow rates.

Analysis of Symptoms of Sick Building Syndrome for Nurses in Hospital Inpatient Rooms

Sick Building syndrome is a symptom that is felt by someone who carries out activities in the building caused by poor indoor air quality conditions that can cause several symptoms of health problems. The purpose of this study was to analyze complaints of sick building syndrome among nurses in hospital inpatient rooms. This research method uses quantitative methods with analytic survey types. The design used was a cross-sectional study with a total sample of 120 people. Data analysis used the chi-square test. The results of this study showed that as many as 40% of nurses experienced symptoms of sick-building syndrome with the most common complaints being sneezing, runny nose/flu, dry skin, dry lips, and feeling tired. And the factors associated with the symptoms of sick building syndrome in nurses are temperature, humidity, lighting, occupancy density, air circulation, years of service, and age. So that hospital management needs to periodically check the physical environment in hospital inpatient rooms.
