Applying Shrink Resist Polymers to Wool Fabrics at Room Temperature Using Pad-Store Methods

Shrink-resist finishing of wool fabrics using aqueous based polymer systems is usually carried out using an energy intensive pad → dry → heat cure technique. This paper describes fabric shrink-resist finishing using the Bunte salt terminated polyether, Lankrolan SHR3 (Diamond Shamrock), by a simple pad → store (room temperature) → wash-off procedure. Advantages of the method include low energy consumption, no fiber yellowing due to the absence of high temperature treatments under alkaline conditions, and ease of post dyeing. Evidence is presented for covalent reaction of the polymer with the fiber to form mixed disulphides, improving the stability of the shrink-resist finish to such agencies as post dyeing.

Treatment of Wool Fabrics with Mixtures of Fluorochemicals and Shrink-Resist Polymers

The influence of polymeric shrink-resist finishes on the durability on wool of fluorochemical stain and soil repellents was examined. In some cases the durability to washing, drycleaning, and abrasion of the fluorochemical (as judged by oil and water-repellency tests) was improved. The best results were obtained by addition of FC-234 (3M Company) to Sirolan BAP pad treatments. This combination also showed improved durability on cotton and polyacrylonitrile when cured with organo metallic catalysts.

Determination of Shrink-Resist Polymers on Wool Fabric by DSC

Abstract Many reactive polymers used to shrink-resist wool fabric are derived from poly(propylene oxide) (PPO). Shrink-resist polymers derived from PPO were identified on wool by their oxidation characteristics using differential scanning calorimetry. The amount of PPO-based polymers on the fabric was estimated using isothermal scans after calibration with suitable standards. Polyacrylates applied with the PPO did not interfere with the oxidation of the PPO component, but a polyester-polyurethane dispersion suppressed PPO oxidation and made identification and estimation of the PPO component unreliable. The technique was used to determine the distribution of shrink-resist polymer on men's trousers.

Multifunctional Amino-Terminated Polyurethanes : Their Preparation and Use as Crosslinkers in Shrink-Resist Polymers for Wool

A simple, rapid method for converting water-insoluble polyisocyanates into either water soluble (or water-dispersible multifunctional amino-terminated polyurethanes or self-crosslinkable polymers containing protonated an ino groups and blocked isocyanate groups is descried. Both types of product are suitable for shrink resisting wool, the self-crosslinkable polymers can be used alone, whereas the polyamines need to be combined with poly mers containing groups capable of reaction with amino groups. The effective functionalites of the amino-terminated polyurethanes correlated well with the values calculated from the known functionality of the reactants, which suggests that chain extension via urea formation was suppressed by this preparative procedure.

The Effect of Environment on Adhesion of Shrink-Resist Polymers on Wool

The durability of wool/polymer adhesive Joints in wash liquors of different surface tension was determined by measuring the rate of felting shrinkage of polymer-treated wool sliver and fabric in each liquor. The rate of felting shrinkage increased as the surface tension of the liquor decreased. This trend in the rate of felting shrinkage of polymer-treated wool agreed well with the trend in the magnitude of the thermodynamic work of adhesion of a wool/polymer “adhint” in different liquids, calculated assuming only secondary bonding forces across the wool/polymer interface. Limitations of the theory are discussed
