Aerosol direct radiative forcing over China: A 40-year MERRA-2-based evaluation

Aerosol direct radiative forcing (ADRF) has substantial impacts on regional and global climate changes, whereas it remains one of the largest uncertainties among various climate forcing factors. The 40-year detailed clear-sky ADRFs over China from 1981 to 2020 are systematically studied based on the MERRA-2 satellite reanalysis data, which hopefully benefit for the evaluation of the performances of aerosol-climate models. The clear-sky shortwave ADRFs show diverse spatial distributions with strong top of atmosphere (TOA) and surface cooling and atmospheric heating over the Taklamakan desert, eastern China, and southern China. A high clear-sky longwave surface ADRF reaching ∼6.5 W/m2 over dust source regions is found, and continuous increase of ADRFs over the Taklamakan desert during the past four decades may indicate that dust episodes therein are becoming severe. The mean clear-sky shortwave surface, TOA and atmospheric ADRFs, and longwave surface ADRF over China during 1981–2020 are found to be −12.3, −5.1, 7.2, and 1.0 W/m2, respectively. The seasonality of clear-sky ADRFs shows strongest mean values in spring, moderate forcings in summer and fall, and weakest levels in winter. The monthly average clear-sky surface and TOA ADRFs over China vary by approximately twofold, ranging the weakest values of −7.8 and −3.9 W/m2 in December to the strongest −17.6 and −7.1 W/m2 in April, respectively. Distinctive seasonal and monthly patterns of clear-sky ADRFs are generally seen among the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, Yangtze River Delta, Pearl River Delta and Tarim Basin in China, while the monthly ADRF patterns over a typical area of these four regions are similar during four different decades. The clear-sky ADRFs over China are highly correlated with aerosol optical thickness, and dust has strong influences on clear-sky shortwave aerosol direct radiative forcing among column aerosol compositions. Our study indicates general underestimations of clear-sky atmospheric ADRF over China by aerosol-climate models and stronger impacts of aerosol scattering than absorption on the TOA radiation budgets in China.

An assessment of the impact of Indian summer monsoon droughts on atmospheric aerosols and associated radiative forcing at a semi-arid station in peninsular India

A continuing increase in droughts/floods in Asian monsoon regions and worsening air quality due to aerosols are the two biggest threats to the health and well being of over 60% of the world's population. This study focuses on in-situ observations of atmospheric aerosols and their impact on shortwave direct aerosol radiative forcing (SDARF) during the southwest monsoon season (June–September) from 2015 to 2020 over a semi-arid station in Southern India. The Standardized precipitation index (SPI) is used to identify the droughts and normal monsoon years. Based on the SPI index, 2015, 2016, and 2018 were considered the drought monsoon years, while 2017, 2019, and 2020 were chosen as the normal monsoon years. During the drought monsoon years (normal monsoon years), the monthly mean black carbon (BC) was 1.17 ± 0.25 (0.72 ± 0.18), 1.02 ± 0.31 (0.64 ± 0.17), 1.02 ± 0.38 (0.74 ± 0.28), and 1.28 ± 0.35 μg/m3 (0.88 ± 0.21 μg/m3), for June, July, August and September respectively. The lower BC concentration during the normal monsoon years is mainly due to the enhanced wet-removal rates by high rainfall over the measurement location. In July, there was a high ventilation coefficient (VC) and low concentration of BC, while in September, low VC, and a high concentration of BC was observed in both the drought and the normal monsoon years. In addition, a plane-parallel radiative transfer model was used to estimate shortwave direct aerosol radiative forcing for composite and without BC at various surfaces, including the surface (SUF), atmosphere (ATM), and top of the atmosphere (TOA). During the drought monsoon years (normal monsoon years), the estimated monthly mean ATM forcing was 17.6 ± 2.4 (13.9 ± 2.1), 17.5 ± 7.5 (12.7 ± 4.4), 17.2 ± 4.0 (13.5 ± 1.9), and 17.4 ± 2.8 Wm−2 (14.6 ± 0.7 Wm−2) for June, July, August, and September, respectively. During the drought monsoon years, the estimated BC forcing was substantially larger (8.8 ± 2.6 Wm−2) than that of normal monsoon years (6.0 ± 1.5 Wm−2). It indicates the important role of absorbing BC aerosols during the drought monsoon years in introducing additional heat to the lower atmosphere, particularly over peninsular India.

Aerosol optical properties over Delhi during a dust event in summer 2014: plausible implications

Delhi experiences frequent dust storms during the pre-monsoon season. We studied one such event that occurred on May 30th, 2014 at New Delhi to understand the changes in the optical properties of aerosols. The present study utilizes the aerosol optical depth (AOD) from the ground and satellite measurements along with reanalysis data. The aerosol characteristics were examined during the pre-week and post-week of the dust storm event. The results show that AOD values reach ~ 1.0 in all the modes of measurements (i.e., sun photometer, MODIS, and MERRA-2) on the dust event day. MODIS-derived Aerosol Angstrom Exponent (AAE), which gradually decreases from 1.7 ± 0.3 to 1.1 ± 0.3, shows the presence of coarse mode particles during the event. The aerosol layer at an elevation from 1 to 2 km was observed using indigenously developed dual-polarization micro-pulse lidar (MPL) system during the dust event. The source of the dust during the storm was identified by the air mass back-trajectories analysis. The dust column mass density averaged 24 hourly at 850 hPa is 780 mg m−2 with a prevailing wind direction of west to east with wind speed of 11–13 ms−1. Shortwave aerosol direct radiative forcing (SWADRF) diurnally averaged at the top of the atmosphere (TOA), the atmosphere (ATM), and surface (SUR) are found to be − 10 W m−2, 27 W m−2, and − 37 W m−2, respectively. The heating rate was enhanced by 56% (from 0.16 to 0.25 K day−1) during the event in the whole atmospheric column. Visibility decreased by 31% during the dust storm day compared with its average value of non-dust storm days.

An Evaluation of the Shortwave Direct Aerosol Radiative Forcing Using CALIOP and MODIS Observations

AbstractIn this study, all‐sky ShortWave Direct Aerosol Radiative Forcing (SWDARF) at the top of atmosphere is estimated using the method of Oikawa et al. (2013) applied to two generations of Cloud‐Aerosol Lidar and Infrared Pathfinder Satellite Observations (CALIPSO) Level 2 products, i.e., version 2 (V2) and version 3 (V3), and the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) cloud product. The estimated SWDARF in Oikawa et al. (2013) was based on CALIPSO V2 product, which contained significant errors in cloud clearing and low‐altitude aerosols. This error was corrected in V3, resulting in greatly improved and significantly different aerosol and cloud distributions. In clear‐sky conditions, the magnitude of aerosol optical thickness underestimation becomes smaller and SWDARF becomes more negative using the V3 product. In addition, above‐cloud aerosols, which cause positive SWDARF, are less frequently detected and below‐cloud aerosols are more frequently detected in the V3 product than in the V2 product, so that cloudy‐sky SWDARF becomes more negative using the V3 product. From these results, clear‐sky, cloudy‐sky, and all‐sky SWDARFs become more negative using the V3 product than the V2 product. The magnitude of negative SWDARF using the V3 product is more than twice as large as the V2 product under all‐sky conditions due to V3 improvements in the lidar retrieval algorithms. Considering the uncertainties of aerosol and cloud measurements, annual zonal averages of clear‐sky, cloudy‐sky, and all‐sky SWDARFs from 60°S to 60°N are estimated as −4.0 ± 0.2, −1.1 ± 0.3, and −2.1 ± 0.2 Wm−2 from the V3 product.

Estimation of shortwave direct aerosol radiative forcing at four locations on the Indo-Gangetic plains: Model results and ground measurement

This study provides observational results of aerosol optical and radiative characteristics over four locations in IGP. Spectral variation of Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD), Single Scattering Albedo (SSA) and Asymmetry Parameter (AP) were analysed using AErosol RObotic NETwork (AERONET) data. The analysis revealed that coarse particles were dominant in summer and pre-monsoon, while fine particles were more pronounced in winter and post-monsoon. Furthermore, the spatio-temporal variations of Shortwave Direct Aerosol Radiative Forcing (SDARF) and Shortwave Direct Aerosol Radiative Forcing Efficiency (SDARFE) at the Top Of Atmosphere (TOA), SURface (SUR) and within ATMosphere (ATM) were calculated using SBDART model. The atmospheric Heating Rate (HR) associated with SDARFATM were also computed. It was observed that the monthly averaged SDARFTOA and SDARFSUR were found to be negative leading to positive SDARFATM during all the months over all sites. The increments in net atmospheric forcing lead to maximum HR in November–December and May. The seasonal analysis of SDARF revealed that SDARFTOA and SDARFSUR were negative during all seasons. The SW atmospheric absorption translates to highest atmospheric HR during summer over Karachi and during pre-monsoon over Lahore, Jaipur and Kanpur. Like SDARF, the monthly and seasonal variations of SDARFETOA and SDARFESUR were found to be negative, resulting in positive atmospheric forcing. Additionally, to compare the model estimated forcing against AERONET derived forcing, the regression analysis of AERONET-SBDART forcing were carried out. It was observed that SDARF at SUR and TOA showed relatively higher correlation over Lahore, moderate over Jaipur and Kanpur and lower over Karachi. Finally, the analysis of National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Hybrid Single Particle Lagrangian Integrated Trajectory (HYSPLIT) model revealed that air masses were arriving from multiple source locations.

Characteristics of columnar aerosol optical and microphysical properties retrieved from the sun photometer and its impact on radiative forcing over Skukuza (South Africa) during 1999-2010.

The detailed analysis of columnar optical and microphysical properties of aerosols obtained from the AErosol RObotic NETwork (AERONET) Cimel sun photometer operated at Skukuza (24.98° S, 31.60° E, 150m above sea level), South Africa was carried out using the level 2.0 direct sun and inversion products measured during 1999-2010. The observed aerosol optical depth (AOD) was generally low over the region, with high values noted in late winter (August) and mid-spring (September and October) seasons. The major aerosol types found during the study period were made of 3.74, 69.63, 9.34, 8.83, and 8.41% for polluted dust (PD), polluted continental (PC), non-absorbing (NA), slightly absorbing (SA), and moderately absorbing (MA) aerosols, respectively. Much attention was given to the aerosol fine- and coarse-modes deduced from the particle volume concentration, effective radius, and fine-mode volume fraction. The aerosol volume size distribution pattern was found to be bimodal with the fine-mode showing predominance relative to coarse-mode during the winter and spring seasons, owing to the onset of the biomass burning season. The mean values of total, fine-, and coarse-mode volume particle concentrations were 0.07±0.04, 0.03±0.03, and 0.04±0.02μm3μm-2, respectively, whereas the mean respective effective radii observed at Skukuza for the abovementioned modes were 0.35±0.17, 0.14±0.02, and 2.08±0.02μm. The averaged shortwave direct aerosol radiative forcing (ARF) observed within the atmosphere was found to be positive (absorption or heating effect), whereas the negative forcing in the surface and TOA depicted significant cooling effect due to more scattering type particles.

Aerosol characterization and radiative properties over Kavaratti, a remote island in southern Arabian Sea from the period of observations

Long-term measurements of spectral aerosol optical depth (AOD) using sun/sky radiometer for a period of five years (2009–2014) from the remote island location at Kavaratti (KVT; 10.56°N, 72.64°E) in the southern Arabian sea have been analysed. Climatologically, AODs decrease from October to reach maximum of ~0.6 (at 500nm) in March, followed by a sudden fall towards May. Significant modulations of intra-seasonal timescales over this general pattern are noticed due to the changes in the relative strength of distinctively different sources. The corresponding changes in aerosol inversion parameters reveal the presence of coarse-mode aerosols during spring and fine-mode absorbing aerosols in autumn and winter months. An overall dominance of a mixed type of aerosols (~41%) with maximum in winter (~53%) was found via the AOD500 vs. Ångström exponent (α440–870) relationship, while biomass-burning aerosols or thick urban/industrial plumes contribute to ~19%. Spectral dependence of Ångström exponent and aerosol absorbing properties were used to identify the aerosol types and its modification processes. Based on air mass back trajectory analysis, we revealed that the advection of aerosols from Indian subcontinent and western regions plays a major role in modifying the optical properties of aerosols over the observational site. The shortwave aerosol direct radiative forcing estimated via SBDART model ranges from −11.00Wm−2 to −7.38Wm−2, −21.51Wm−2 to −14.33Wm−2 and 3.17Wm−2 and 10.0Wm−2 at top of atmosphere, surface and within the atmosphere, respectively. This atmospheric forcing translates into heating rate of 0.62–1.04Kday−1. Furthermore, the vertical profiles of aerosols and heating rate exhibit significant increase in lower (during winter and autumn) and mid troposphere (during spring). This may cause serious climate implications over Kavaratti with further consequences on cloud microphysics and monsoon rainfall.

Changes in column aerosol optical properties during extreme haze-fog episodes in January 2013 over urban Beijing

Several dense haze-fog (HF) episodes were occurred in the North China Plain (NCP), especially over Beijing in January 2013 characterized by a long duration, a large influential region, and an extremely high PM2.5 values (>500 μg m−3). In this study, we present the characteristics of aerosol optical properties and radiative forcing using Cimel sun-sky radiometer measurements during HF and no haze-fog (NHF) episodes occurred over Beijing during 1–31 January, 2013. The respective maximum values of daily mean aerosol optical depth at 440 nm (AOD440) were observed to be 1.21, 1.43, 1.52, and 2.21 occurred on 12, 14 19, and 28 January. It was found that the Ångström exponent (AE) values were almost higher than 1.0 during all the days with its maximum on 26 January (1.53), suggests the dominance of fine-mode particles. The maximum (minimum) aerosol volume size distributions occurred during dense HF (NHF) days with larger particle volumes of fine-mode. The single scattering albedo, asymmetry parameter, and complex refractive index values during HF events suggest the abundance of fine-mode particles from anthropogenic (absorbing) activities mixed with scattering dust particles. The average shortwave direct aerosol radiative forcing (DARF) values at the bottom-of-atmosphere (BOA) during HF and NHF days were estimated to be 112.29 ± 42.18 W m−2 and −58.61 ± 13.09 W m−2, while at the top-of-atmosphere (TOA) the forcing values were −45.78 ± 22.17 W m−2 and −18.64 ± 5.84 W m−2, with the corresponding heating rate of 1.61 ± 0.48 K day−1 and 1.12 ± 0.31 K day−1, respectively. The DARF values retrieved from the AERONET were in good agreement with the SBDART computed both at the TOA (r = 0.95) and the BOA (r = 0.97) over Beijing in January 2013.

Direct radiative effect of the Russian wildfires and its impact on air temperature and atmospheric dynamics during August 2010

Abstract. In this study, we investigate the shortwave aerosol direct radiative forcing (ADRF) and its feedback on air temperature and atmospheric dynamics during a major fire event that occurred in Russia during August 2010. The methodology is based on an offline coupling between the CHIMERE chemistry-transport and the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) models. First, simulations for the period 5–12 August 2010 have been evaluated by using AERONET (AErosol RObotic NETwork) and satellite measurements of the POLarization and Directionality of the Earth's Reflectance (POLDER) and the Cloud-Aerosol LIdar with Orthogonal Polarization (CALIOP) sensors. During this period, elevated POLDER aerosol optical thickness (AOT) is found over a large part of eastern Europe, with values above 2 (at 550 nm) in the aerosol plume. According to CALIOP observations, particles remain confined to the first five kilometres of the atmospheric layer. Comparisons with satellite measurements show the ability of CHIMERE to reproduce the regional and vertical distribution of aerosols during their transport from the source region. Over Moscow, AERONET measurements indicate an important increase of AOT (340 nm) from 0.7 on 5 August to 2–4 between 6 and 10 August when the aerosol plume was advected over the city. Particles are mainly observed in the fine size mode (radius in the range 0.2–0.4 μm) and are characterized by elevated single-scattering albedo (SSA) (0.95–0.96 between 440 and 1020 nm). Comparisons of simulations with AERONET measurements show that aerosol physical–optical properties (size distribution, AOT, SSA) have been well simulated over Moscow in terms of intensity and/or spectral dependence. Secondly, modelled aerosol optical properties have been used as input in the radiative transfer code of WRF to evaluate their direct radiative impact. Simulations indicate a significant reduction of solar radiation at the ground (up to 80–150 W m−2 in diurnal averages over a large part of eastern Europe due to the presence of the aerosol plume. This ADRF causes an important reduction of the near-surface air temperature between 0.2 and 2.6° on a regional scale. Moscow has been affected by the aerosol plume, especially between 6 and 10 August. During this period, aerosol causes a significant reduction of surface shortwave radiation (up to 70–84 W m−2 in diurnal averages) with a moderate part (20–30%) due to solar absorption within the aerosol layer. The resulting feedbacks lead to a cooling of the air up to 1.6° at the surface and 0.1° at an altitude of 1500–2000 m (in diurnal averages), that contribute to stabilize the atmospheric boundary layer (ABL). Indeed, a reduction of the ABL height of 13 to 65% has been simulated during daytime in presence of aerosols. This decrease is the result of a lower air entrainment as the vertical wind speed in the ABL is shown to be reduced by 5 to 80% (at midday) when the feedback of the ADRF is taken into account. However, the ADRF is shown to have a lower impact on the horizontal wind speed, suggesting that the dilution of particles would be mainly affected by the weakening of the ABL development and associated vertical entrainment. Indeed, CHIMERE simulations driven by the WRF meteorological fields including this ADRF feedback result in a large increase in the modelled near-surface PM10 concentrations (up to 99%). This is due to their lower vertical dilution in the ABL, which tend to reduce model biases with the ground PM10 values observed over Moscow during this specific period.

The shortwave aerosol direct radiative forcing (SWARF) was analyzed using the Clouds and Earth's Radiant Energy System (CERES) data in the East Asian region from 2001 to 2010. In the Yellow Sea and the Korean Peninsula, located in the leeward side of China, significantly negative high SWARF at the top of atmosphere (TOA) occurs due to the long-range transport of anthropogenic (e.g. sulphate) and natural aerosols (e.g. mineral dust) from the East Asian continent. Conversely, eastern China has much higher levels of SWARF at the surface (SFC) due to anthropogenically emitted aerosol than in the Yellow Sea and the Korean Peninsula. Since the radiative forcing of aerosols in the atmosphere are different in type, aerosol types were classified into sea salt+sulphate, smoke, sulphate and dust by using satellite data. The analysis on the SWARF by the classified aerosol types indicated that sulphate occupies a predominant portion of the atmosphere in the Yellow Sea and the Korean Peninsula in the summer. In particular, the annual averages of the summer TOA SWARF increased in the Yellow Sea and the Korean Peninsula from 2001 to 2010.

A study of the shortwave direct aerosol forcing using ESSP/CALIPSO observation and GCM simulation

Shortwave direct aerosol radiative forcing (DARF) is derived at the top of the atmosphere (TOA) and at the surface under clear‐sky, cloudy‐sky, and all‐sky conditions using data of space‐borne CALIOP lidar and MODIS sensor. We investigate four scenarios for evaluating the DARF: clear‐sky, the case that aerosols exist above clouds, the case that aerosols exist below high‐level clouds, and the case that aerosols are not detected by CALIOP in cloudy‐sky condition. The cloudy‐sky DARF is estimated by the latter three scenarios. The all‐sky DARF is the combination of clear‐sky and cloudy‐sky DARF weighted by the cloud occurrence. They are then compared with DARF calculated by a global aerosol model, SPRINTARS. The results show that the TOA forcing over desert regions caused by dust with single scattering albedo (SSA) of 0.92 is positive regardless of cloud existence, due to high solar surface albedo. Off southern Africa, smoke aerosols with SSA of 0.84 above low‐level clouds are observed and simulated and the annual mean TOA cloudy‐sky DARF is estimated at more than +3 Wm−2, consistent with past studies. Aerosols with SSA of 0.96 within optically thin clouds cause a TOA negative forcing, while that within optically thick clouds cause a TOA positive forcing. This indicates that aerosols within optically thick clouds cause positive forcing in our radiative transfer calculation, regardless of SSA. Annual zonal averages of DARF from 60°S to 60°N under clear‐sky, cloudy‐sky, and all‐sky are −2.97, +0.07, and −0.61 Wm−2 from CALIOP and −2.78, +1.07, and −0.58 Wm−2 from SPRINTARS.

Impacts of future air pollution mitigation strategies on the aerosol direct radiative forcing over Europe

Projections of aerosol emissions for 2030 have been recently generated and implemented in a comprehensive chemistry-transport model to analyse the future evolution of the aerosol radiative forcing over Europe. In this study, numerical developments based on an off-line coupling between the regional chemistry-transport model CHIMERE (extended by an aerosol optical module) and the radiative transfer code GAME have been implemented in order to simulate the interaction of physico-chemically resolved aerosols with radiation at regional scale. This novel approach is used to examine the shortwave aerosol direct radiative forcing response to two air pollution reduction scenarios for 2030 over Europe. Our study suggests that measures introduced to improve future air quality could have large implication on the aerosol climate forcing over Europe. Results of simulations indicate that abatement of aerosols in the near future could lead to a decrease of the aerosol cooling effect at the surface and at the top of the atmosphere over the main anthropogenic emission regions. Especially over the Moscow region, different strategies of reduction for scattering sulphate and absorbing black carbon aerosols between the two scenarios could result, however, in either a reduction or an enhancement in atmospheric radiative forcing.

Downscaling aerosols and the impact of neglected subgrid processes on direct aerosol radiative forcing for a representative global climate model grid spacing

[1] Recent improvements to many global climate models include detailed, prognostic aerosol calculations intended to better reproduce the observed climate. However, the trace gas and aerosol fields are treated at the grid cell scale with no attempt to account for subgrid impacts on the aerosol fields. This paper begins to quantify the error introduced by the neglected subgrid variability for the shortwave direct aerosol radiative forcing for a representative climate model grid spacing of 75 km. An analysis of the value added in downscaling aerosol fields is also presented to give context to the WRF-Chem simulations used for the subgrid analysis. We found that the impact of neglected subgrid variability on the direct aerosol radiative forcing is strongest in regions of complex topography and complicated flow patterns. Evidence also suggests that scale-induced differences in emissions, particularly for emissions calculated online, such as dust, contribute strongly to the impact of neglected subgrid processes on the aerosol radiative forcing. The two of these effects together, when simulated at 75 km versus 3 km in WRF-Chem, result in an average daytime mean bias of over 30% error in top-of-atmosphere shortwave direct aerosol radiative forcing for a large percentage of central Mexico during the Megacity Initiative: Local and Global Research Observations (MILAGRO) field campaign and an average mean bias of 10% when averaged over the entire analysis region and 17 day period.

Physical and optical properties of aerosols over an urban location in western India: Implications for shortwave radiative forcing

We discuss results on implications of seasonal and interannual variabilities in aerosol parameters measured over Ahmedabad, an urban location in western India, for the regional‐scale shortwave aerosol direct radiative forcing. Results on physical and optical properties of aerosols are discussed in a companion paper. A discrete ordinate radiative transfer model has been used to carry out the radiative transfer computations. Two different approaches are followed to generate spectral values of aerosol parameters required as input for the radiative transfer computations, and the estimated values are found comparable for both methods. Magnitudes of surface forcing are found to be highest during postmonsoon (−63 ± 10 W/m2), followed by dry (−54 ± 6 W/m2) and lower values during premonsoon (−41.4 ± 5 W/m2) and monsoon (−41 ± 11 W/m2) seasons. In case of TOA, radiative forcing are found to be negative during dry (−26 ± 3 W/m2) and postmonsoon (−22), while positive values are obtained during monsoon (14) and premonsoon (8). Large differences between TOA and surface forcing during monsoon and premonsoon indicate large absorption of radiant energy (∼50 W/m2) within the atmosphere during these seasons. Different properties of aerosols and differences in their vertical distribution give rise to different heating rates within the atmosphere for different seasons. Heating rates at the surface are found to be highest during postmonsoon (5.6°K/day) but decreases sharply with increase in height. Atmosphere is heated strongly at higher levels between 1 and 2 km during monsoon. Results from several sensitivity studies have emphasized the importance of solar zenith angle and other related factors in modulating the values of aerosol radiative forcing.

Chemical apportionment of shortwave direct aerosol radiative forcing at the Gosan super-site, Korea during ACE-Asia

Shortwave direct aerosol radiative forcing (DARF) at the surface as well as aerosol optical depth (AOD) were estimated and chemically apportioned on the basis of ground-based aerosol and radiation measurements at the Gosan super-site in Korea during the Asian Pacific Regional Aerosol Characterization Experiment (ACE-Asia) in April 2001. An aerosol optical model and a radiative transfer model (RTM) were employed to calculate the aerosol extinction coefficient and radiative flux at the surface, respectively. The calculated scattering and absorption coefficients for D p<10 μm aerosols agreed well with measured scattering and absorption coefficients with root mean square errors (RMSEs) of 23.6 and 3.0 Mm −1, respectively. The modeled direct and diffuse irradiances at the surface were also in good agreement with the measured direct and diffuse irradiances. In this study we found that the 17-day mean aerosol radiative forcing of −38.3 W m −2 at the surface is attributable to mineral dust (45.7%), water-soluble components (sum of sulfate, nitrate, ammonium, and water-soluble organic carbon (WSOC)) (26.8%), and elemental carbon (EC) (26.4%). However, sea salt does not play a major role. For the cases of Asian dust and smoke episodic events on 26 April 2001, a diurnal averaged forcing of −36.2 W m −2 was contributed by mineral dust (−18.8 W m −2), EC (−6.7 W m −2), and water-soluble components (−10.7 W m −2). The results of this study suggest that water-soluble and EC components as well as a mineral dust component are responsible for a large portion of the aerosol radiative forcing at the surface in the continental outflow region of East Asia.

Shortwave aerosol radiative forcing over cloud‐free oceans from Terra: 2. Seasonal and global distributions

Using 10 months of collocated Clouds and the Earth's Radiant Energy System (CERES) scanner and Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aerosol and cloud data from Terra, we provide estimates of the shortwave aerosol direct radiative forcing (SWARF) and its uncertainties over the cloud‐free global oceans. Newly developed aerosol angular distribution models (ADMs) (Zhang et al., 2005), specifically for different sea surface conditions and aerosol types, are used for inverting the CERES observed radiances to shortwave fluxes while accounting for the effect of aerosol optical properties on the anisotropy of the top of atmosphere (TOA) shortwave radiation fields. The spatial and seasonal distributions of SWARF are presented, and the MODIS retrieved aerosol optical depth (τ0.55) and the independently derived SWARF show a high degree of correlation and can be estimated using the equation SWARF = 0.05 − 74.6 τ0.55 + 18.2 τ0.552 W m−2 (τ0.55 &lt; 0.8). The instantaneous TOA SWARF from Terra overpass time is −6.4 ± 2.6 W m−2 for cloud‐free oceans. Accounting for sample biases and diurnal averaging, we estimate the SWARF over cloud‐free oceans to be −5.3 ± 1.7 W m−2, consistent with previous studies. Our study is an independent measurement‐based assessment of cloud‐free aerosol radiative forcing that could be used as a validation tool for numerical modeling studies.

Aerosol direct radiative impact over the INDOEX area based on passive and active remote sensing

This study is dedicated to the direct radiative impact assessment of the pollution aerosol particles during the Indian Ocean Experiment (INDOEX). We use here an instrumental synergy based on active and passive ground‐based (Goa University, India), airborne (Mystere 20 research aircraft), and spaceborne (Meteosat‐5) devices. An original method based on ground‐based active actinic flux measurements is developed to assess the atmospheric, columnar aerosol single scattering albedo. This parameter has been found between 0.88 and 0.93 (at 440 nm) with an absolute uncertainty of 0.04 during the operating period from 11 to 23 March 1999. We have also assessed this parameter off the West Indian coast by comparing simultaneous airborne lidar and flux measurements with radiative transfer simulations. The value retrieved for the atmospheric column is close to 0.83 ± 0.05 (at 523 nm) in agreement with the coastal value. The horizontal and vertical extent of the aerosol plume is investigated using airborne lidar and Meteosat‐5 satellite. Using the Meteosat‐5‐derived aerosol optical thickness, we have estimated the regional extent of the shortwave aerosol direct radiative forcing. The vertical profile of the aerosol extinction coefficient derived from lidar sounding is used to assess the atmospheric shortwave heating rate induced by the aerosol layer. For an aerosol optical thickness of 0.6 (±0.12), as it has been observed in the aerosol plume in late March, the top of atmosphere direct aerosol forcing is −17 (±5) W m−2. The surface forcing is between 2.5 and 4.5 higher than the top of atmosphere forcing. This difference leads to a significant heating of the three lowest kilometers of the atmosphere by the aerosols. For an aerosol optical thickness of 0.6, the atmospheric heating rate induced by aerosols is between 0.8 and 1.2 Kd−1 depending on the aerosol single scattering albedo value.
