Shaping civic values of modern youth: Evaluating the influence of the international plein air as a specially organized artistic practice

Introduction. The article investigates the problem of patriotic education of modern youth. The purpose of the research is to identify and clarify the peculiarities of the influence of an international plein air as a specially organized artistic practice on the formation of modern youth civic values. Materials and Methods. The research is based on axiological and personality-centered approaches. The main research method is theoretical (reviewing regulatory documents and scholarly literature, analysis and synthesis, comparison, generalization and data interpretation). In addition, a practical method was used (students performing search and short-term training exercises, as well as long-term artistic compositions). The project of the International Art Competition called ‘Without Borders’ that is analyzed in the article is a new format of an online professional Internet competition for students majoring in Arts for partner pedagogical universities. Results. The article analyzes the results of the international project on patriotic education and formation of civic values in modern students, implemented within the framework of cooperation between pedagogical universities of Belarus and Russia. The study convincingly proves that it is the plein air that provides an effective environment for developing students’ artistic and creative skills, implementing patriotic education of students, as well as contributes to shaping their readiness to organize patriotic educational activities in the future. Conclusions. The article concludes about the specifics of the influence of the international plein air as a specially organized artistic practice on the formation of modern students’ civic values.

Short-term exercise counteracts accelerated ageing impacts on physical performance and liver health in mice.

Senescence impairs liver physiology, mitochondrial function and circadian regulation, resulting in systemic metabolic dysregulation. Given the limited research on the effects of combined exercise on an ageing liver, this study aimed to evaluate its impact on liver metabolism, circadian rhythms and mitochondrial function in senescence-accelerated mouse-prone 8 (SAMP8) and senescence-accelerated mouse-resistant 1 (SAMR1) mice. Histological, reverse transcription quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) and immunoblotting analyses were conducted, supplemented by transcriptomic data sets and AML12 hepatocyte studies. Sedentary SAMP8 mice exhibited decreased muscle strength, reduced mitochondrial complex I levels and increased lipid droplet accumulation. In contrast, combined exercise mitigated muscle strength loss, upregulated proteins involved in mitochondrial complexes (CIII, CIV, CV) and increased Bmal1 messenger RNA (mRNA) expression in the liver. These molecular adaptations are associated with healthier liver phenotypes and may influence metabolic function and cellular longevity. Notably, elevated lipid content in aged mice was reduced post-exercise, indicating liver benefits even after a relatively short intervention. The combined exercise regimen did not improve aerobic capacity, likely due to the low volume and brief duration of running. Moreover, no significant effects were observed in SAMR1 mice, possibly because the training intensity was insufficient for younger, healthier animals. These findings underscore the potential of combined strength and endurance exercise to attenuate age-related liver dysfunction, particularly in ageing populations.

Different treatments in chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension: comparison of strategies in the Italian centre real-world experience

Abstract Rationale Pulmonary endarterectomy (PEA) has been the most effective therapy for chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH). However, there is a substantial proportion of patients declared not operable in whom other treatment strategies are available: medical therapy and balloon pulmonary angioplasty (BPA). We aimed to compare different CTEPH treatment strategies effect in real-world setting. Methods All CTEPH referred to our Centre were included. We compare the short-term clinical, functional, exercise and haemodynamic effect of medical therapy (irrespective of subsequent treatment strategies), PEA and BPA (irrespective of previous/subsequent treatment strategies); we also describe the long-term outcome of the different patient groups. Results We included 467 patients (39% were treated only with medical therapy, 43% underwent PEA, 13% underwent BPA and 5% were not treated with any therapy). Patients treated only with medical therapy were the oldest; compared to patients undergoing PEA, they had a lower exercise capacity, a higher risk profile and gained a lower haemodynamic, functional and survival benefit from the treatment. Patients undergoing BPA had a lower haemodynamic improvement but a comparable functional, exercise and risk improvement and a similar survival compared to patients undergoing PEA; their survival is anyway better than patients undergoing only medical treatment. Untreated historical control patients had the worst survival. Conclusions We confirm the superiority of PEA compared to any alternative treatment in CTEPH and we observe that BPA, in patients declared not operable or with persistent/recurrent PH after PEA, leads to a better outcome than medical therapy alone.

Two weeks of exercise alters neuronal extracellular vesicle insulin signaling proteins and pro-BDNF in older adults with prediabetes.

Adults with prediabetes are at risk for Alzheimer's Disease and Related Dementia (ADRD). While exercise may lower ADRD risk, the exact mechanism is unclear. We tested the hypothesis that short-term exercise would raise neuronal insulin signaling and pro-BDNF in neuronal extracellular vesicles (nEVs) in prediabetes. Twenty-one older adults (18F, 60.0 ± 8.6 yrs.; BMI: 33.5 ± 1.1 kg/m2) with prediabetes (ADA criteria; 75 g OGTT) were randomized to 12 supervised work-matched continuous (n = 13, 70% HRpeak) or interval (n = 8, 90% HRpeak and 50% HRpeak for 3 min each) sessions over 2-wks for 60 min/d. Aerobic fitness (VO2peak) and body weight were assessed. After an overnight fast, whole-body glucose tolerance (total area under the curve, tAUC) and insulin sensitivity (SIis) were determined from a 120 min 75 g OGTT. nEVs were acquired from 0 and 60 min time-points of the OGTT, and levels of insulin signaling proteins (i.e., p-IRS-1, total-/p-Akt, pERK1/2, pJNK1/2, and pp38) and pro-BNDF were measured. OGTT stimulatory effects were calculated from protein differences (i.e., OGTT 60-0 min). Adults were collapsed into a single group as exercise intensity did not affect nEV outcomes. Exercise raised VO2peak (+1.4 ± 2.0 mL/kg/min, p = 0.008) and insulin sensitivity (p = 0.01) as well as decreased weight (-0.4 ± 0.9 kg, p = 0.04) and whole-body glucose tAUC120min (p = 0.02). Training lowered 0-min pro-BDNF (704.1 ± 1019.0 vs. 414.5 ± 533.5, p = 0.04) and increased OGTT-stimulated tAkt (-51.8 ± 147.2 vs. 95 ± 204.5 a.u., p = 0.01), which was paralleled by reduced pAkt/tAkt at 60 min of the OGTT (1.3 ± 0.2 vs. 1.2 ± 0.1 a.u., p = 0.04). Thus, 2 weeks of exercise altered neuronal insulin signaling responses to glucose ingestion and lowered pro-BNDF among adults with prediabetes, thereby potentially lowering ADRD risk.

Short-Term Multicomponent Exercise Impact on Muscle Function and Structure in Hospitalized Older at Risk of Acute Sarcopenia.

Hospitalization exacerbates sarcopenia and physical dysfunction in older adults. Whether tailored inpatient exercise prevents acute sarcopenia is unknown. This study aimed to examine the effect of a multicomponent exercise programme on muscle and physical function in hospitalized older adults. We hypothesized that participation in a brief tailored exercise regimen (i.e., 3-5 days) would attenuate muscle function and structure changes compared with usual hospital care alone. This randomized clinical trial with blinded outcome assessment was conducted from May 2018 to April 2021 at Hospital Universitario de Navarra, Spain. Participants were 130 patients aged 75 years and older admitted to an acute care geriatric unit. Patients were randomized to a tailored 3- to 5-day exercise programme (n = 64) or usual hospital care (control, n = 66) consisting of physical therapy if needed. The coprimary endpoints were between-group differences in changes in short physical performance battery (SPPB) score and usual gait velocity from hospital admission to discharge. Secondary endpoints included changes in rectus femoris echo intensity, cross-sectional area, thickness and subcutaneous and intramuscular fat by ultrasound. Among 130 randomized patients (mean [SD] age, 87.7 [4.6] years; 57 [44%] women), the exercise group increased their mean SPPB score by 0.98 points (95% CI, 0.28-1.69 points) and gait velocity by 0.09 m/s (95% CI, 0.03-0.15 m/s) more than controls (both p < 0.01). No between-group differences were observed in any ultrasound muscle outcomes. There were no study-related adverse events. Three to 5 days of tailored multicomponent exercise provided functional benefits but did not alter muscle or fat architecture compared with usual hospital care alone among vulnerable older patients. Beta (β)-cell senescence contributes to type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). While exercise is vital for T2DM management and significantly affects cellular ageing markers, its effect on β-cell senescence remains unexplored. Here, we show that short-term endurance exercise training (treadmill running, 1 h per day for 10 days) in two male and female mouse models of insulin resistance decreases β-cell senescence. In vivo and in vitro experiments revealed that this effect is mediated, at least in part, by training-induced increases in serum glucagon, leading to activation of 5'-AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) signalling in β-cells. AMPK activation resulted in the nuclear translocation of NRF2 and decreased expression of senescence markers and effectors. Remarkably, human islets from male and female donors with T2DM treated with serum collected after a 10-week endurance exercise training programme showed a significant decrease in the levels of senescence markers. These findings indicate that exercise training decreases senescence in pancreatic islets, offering promising therapeutic implications for T2DM.

Short-term exercise training benefits pulmonary arterial hypertension patients.

Studies have shown exercise rehabilitation training improves exercise tolerance in pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) patients. However, implementing such programs in developing countries can be challenging. We investigated the benefits of short-term exercise rehabilitation training for PAH patients in a developing country. This study was a prospective study of adult PAH patients attending the cardiology outpatient unit of a tertiary referral hospital. The patients were equally divided into an intervention group and a control group. We measured hemodynamic characteristics and six-minute walking distance (6MWD) before and after four weeks of exercise rehabilitation training. The Shapiro-Wilk normality test was performed, followed by an independent t-test or Mann-Whitney test to statistically compare the data. We included 28 patients aged 29.1 ± 11 years. We found no significant differences in all hemodynamic characteristics between the groups before and after the rehabilitation (all p-values >0.05). The intervention group showed a significant increase in 6MWD (300.6 ± 90.8 (95% CI: 248.2, 352.9) vs 436.3 ± 58.8 (95% CI: 402.3, 470.2), p-value <0.001) and consequently, the Δ6MWD in the intervention group was remarkably higher (17.1 ± 48.3 (95% CI: -10.8, 44.9) vs 115.36 ± 54.69 m (95% CI: 83.8, 146.9), p-value <0.001). A short-term exercise rehabilitation training safely improved the exercise tolerance of patients with PAH. Our findings may lead to the improvement of rehabilitation strategies for this detrimental disease in countries with limited resources.

Improved heart rate variability in postmenopausal women following short-term combined exercise training

Imbalances in cardiac autonomic nervous systems are associated with cardiovascular risk factors and poor cardiac outcomes. Heart rate variability (HRV) is a practical and reproducible measure of cardiac autonomic nervous system function. Exercise training promotes positive adjustments in HRV. However, previous studies have reported mixed results. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the effects of short-term combined exercise training on heart rate variability in post-menopausal women. Thirty-four women aged 50-80 years, at least 12 months post-menopause, were divided into a control (CON) group and an exercise (EX) training group. The participants in the exercise group underwent a 2-week of combined exercise program consisting of aerobic, strength, flexibility, and balance exercises. HRV was recorded using an Actiheart device, before and after the final exercise intervention in a sitting position. The significant main effects of time and group were found in the parameter of SDNN (p time = 0.039; p group = 0.026). Post-hoc analysis showed a borderline increase in SDNN in the EX group (POST: 48.79 ± 17.88 VS 44.54 ± 17.39, p = 0.055). No significant change was observed in the CON group (POST: 35.55 ± 13.51 VS 33.17 ± 8.74, p = 0.288). Statistical analysis of other HRV components revealed no significant results (all P &gt; 0.05). In conclusion, a 2-week of combined exercise training program, including aerobic, resistance, balance, and flexibility exercises improves global cardiac autonomic function in post-menopausal women. Long- and short-term effectiveness of traditional Chinese exercises in improving the overall physical capacity of patients with knee osteoarthritis: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

The increasing global popularity of traditional Chinese exercise (TCE) provides substantial evidence of its significant efficacy in treating knee osteoarthritis (KOA). To assess the impact of different types of TCE and varying exercise durations on KOA patients, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) on this topic. Two investigators extensively searched four electronic databases (PubMed, Embase, Cochrane, and Web of Science) from their inception until December 16, 2023, to identify all relevant RCTs on the use of TCE for KOA treatment. The included studies were assessed for risk of bias using the Cochrane Collaboration Risk of Bias Tool (CCRBT), and data analysis was performed using Stata 15.0. A total of 20 RCTs, involving 1367 patients with KOA, met the inclusion criteria. Compared to the control group, TCE demonstrated significant improvement in three subscale scores of the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) [Pain (SMD = -0.44; P = .0001); Stiffness (SMD = -0.35; P = .001); Physical function (SMD = -0.52; P = .0001)] and two subscale scores of the 36-item Short-Form (SF-36) [Physical score (WMD = 2.76; P = .001); Mental score (WMD = 2.49; P = .0001)] in KOA patients. Subgroup analysis showed that both long-term habitual exercise (over 12 weeks) and short-term exercise (within 12 weeks) were more effective than the control group in improving pain, joint stiffness, and physical function in KOA patients. Tai Chi, among the four TCE modalities analyzed, demonstrated improvements in all indicators. Based on the results of our meta-analysis, it can be concluded that both long-term and short-term TCE interventions are effective in alleviating the main symptoms of KOA and improving patients' physical function. However, due to limited methodological quality and inconsistent outcome measures in the included RCTs, further high-quality RCTs with larger sample sizes and longer-term interventions are necessary to validate our findings before TCE can be recommended as a treatment for KOA.

Engaging in Short-Term Moderate-Intensity Exercise Increases Growth Hormone Levels in Individuals with Obesity

Objectives. This study aimed to analyze the effect of a four-week moderate-intensity exercise regimen on increasing growth hormone (GH) levels in individuals with obesity. Materials and methods. A total of 25 female individuals aged 20-25 years, with a body mass index (BMI) of 27.50-37.00 kg/m², were involved in the study and randomly divided into two groups, namely the control group (CON; n = 12) and the moderate-intensity exercise group (MIE; n = 13). The moderate-intensity exercise regimen (treadmill exercise for 30 minutes at 60-70% of HRmax, and resistance exercise for 30 minutes at 60-70% of 1RM) was conducted 3 times per week for a period of 4 weeks. Blood samples from participants were collected pre- and post-exercise sessions, and GH levels were analyzed using the Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay method. Data analysis techniques used the paired sample t-test with a significance level of 5 %. Results. The paired sample t-test results of GH levels between the pre-exercise and post-exercise sessions in the CON group showed a change from (1291.79 ± 383.76 to 1151.53 ± 484.80 pg/mL; p = 0.694), while the MIE group demonstrated the following dynamics of change — from (1161.79 ± 133.72 to 2103.83 ± 357.09 pg/mL; p = 0.006). Conclusions. The main findings of this study revealed that after implementing a four-week moderate-intensity exercise intervention, a significant increase in GH levels was observed in obese females.

The Effects of Short-Term Electromyostimulation Exercises and Different Diet Types on Body Composition in Obese Women

Obesity is one of the world's most risky health problems with increasing prevalence. This study aimed to investigate the effect of calorie-restricted diet and intermittent fasting diet on body composition with electromyostimulation (EMS) applications in obese females. The study was conducted with 90 obese females. Participants were randomly divided into 5 groups, EMS, EMS+intermittent fasting (EMS+IF), EMS+calorie restricted (EMS+CR), intermittent fasting (IF), and calorie restricted (CR) diet groups. EMS groups received 27min/2g/week EMS exercise protocol for 4 weeks. Furthermore, dietary interventions were conducted with all groups (except EMS). Body composition measurements of the participants were obtained with a bioelectrical impedance device. Two-way repeated measures ANOVA was used to analyze the obtained data. BMI, body mass, and body fat weight decreased significantly in the EMS+IF, and EMS+CR groups compared to the EMS group while skeletal muscle weight decreased dramatically in all four groups compared to the EMS group. In body analysis regional (right-left arm, right-left leg, and trunk) parameters, fat weight decreased significantly in EMS+IF, and EMS+CR groups compared to the other groups. Moreover, muscle mass decreased more in the EMS+CR and EMS+IF groups compared to the other groups. Dietary interventions in the form of CR or IF with EMS significantly affected body composition measurements in obese participants. Effects of short-term upper extremity exercise training in office workers during COVID-19 restrictions: A randomized controlled trial.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, physical inactivity and inactivity-related health problems have deepened in many individuals, including office workers. It is not yet known whether there are exercise programs through telerehabilitation that will provide rapid relief in a short time in office workers who apply part or full-time teleworking system. To comparatively investigate influences of short-term upper extremity exercise trainings (UEET) on pain, musculoskeletal discomforts (MSD), physical activity (PA), mood, and quality of life (QOL) in office workers during COVID-19 restrictions. Thirty office workers were divided into exercise (EG) (UEET and walking advice) and control (CG) (walking advice) groups. The UEET was applied for at least 20-40 minutes/day, 5-7 days/week for a one week between February 2022 and June 2022. Office workers' pain, MSD, PA level, mood and QOL were measured. Baseline characteristics of groups (EG: 37.8±7.04 years, CG: 41.6±7.97 years) were similar (p > 0.05). Following UEET, scores of office workers in EG on total step count, vigorous PA, moderate-intensity PA, walking, total PA, physical functioning, and body pain subscales of QOL significantly increased compared to scores of office workers in CG, while scores on neck, back and hip discomforts and anxiety and depression significantly decreased (p < 0.05). One-week UEET and walking advice can improve office workers' daily step counts, MSD, PA levels, mood, and QOL. Office workers who have a busy work schedule may do these UEET and walking exercises in break times to relieve perception of discomfort.

The role of interleukin-10 in mitigating endoplasmic reticulum stress in aged mice through exercise.

Although unfolded protein response (UPR) is essential for cellular protection, its prolonged activation may induce apoptosis, compromising cellular longevity. The aging process increases the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress in skeletal muscle. However, whether combined exercise can prevent age-induced ER stress in skeletal muscle remains unknown. Evidence suggests that ER stress may increase inflammation by counteracting the positive effects of interleukin-10 (IL-10), whereas its administration in cells inhibits ER stress and apoptosis. This study verified the effects of aging and combined exercise on physical performance, ER stress markers, and inflammation in the quadriceps of mice. Moreover, we verified the effects of IL-10 on ER stress markers. C57BL/6 mice were distributed into young (Y, 6 mo old), old sedentary (OS, sedentary, 24 mo old), and old trained group (OT, submitted to short-term combined exercise, 24 mo old). To clarify the role of IL-10 in UPR pathways, knockout mice lacking IL-10 were used. The OS mice presented worse physical performance and higher ER stress-related proteins, such as C/EBP homologous protein (CHOP) and phospho-eukaryotic translation initiation factor 2 alpha (p-eIF2α/eIF2α). The exercise protocol increased muscle strength and IL-10 protein levels in OT while inducing the downregulation of CHOP protein levels compared with OS. Furthermore, mice lacking IL-10 increased BiP, CHOP, and p-eIF2α/eIF2α protein levels, indicating this cytokine can regulate the ER stress response in skeletal muscle. Bioinformatics analysis showed that endurance and resistance training downregulated DNA damage inducible transcript 3 (DDIT3) and XBP1 gene expression in the vastus lateralis of older people, reinforcing our findings. Thus, combined exercise is a potential therapeutic intervention for promoting adjustments in ER stress markers in aged skeletal muscle.NEW & NOTEWORTHY Aging elevates endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress in skeletal muscle, potentially heightening inflammation by opposing interleukin-10 (IL-10) effects. This study found that short-term combined exercise boosted strength and IL-10 protein levels while reducing CHOP protein levels in older mice. In addition, IL-10-deficient mice exhibited increased ER stress markers, highlighting IL-10's role in regulating ER stress in skeletal muscle. Consequently, combined exercise emerges as a therapeutic intervention to elevate IL-10 and adjust ER stress markers in aging.

Physiological mechanisms of exercise related to prevention and treatment of breast cancer: A review

Background: Considering limitations related to intensity, duration, and mode of exercise and possible physiological mechanisms, this study aimed to summarize the physiological mechanisms emphasizing inflammation, angiogenesis, and immunology of different exercises related to prevention and treatment of breast cancer. Methods: In the current review study, different platforms were analyzed including PubMed, Scopus, Cochrane, Embase, Web of Science, Science Direct, Google Scholar, and Research Gate as well as Iranian databases such as Scientific Information Database (SID) and Magiran. The data was reviewed until May 2024. Search keywords included “exercise", "sport”, “physical exercise”, “intensity, training”, “breast cancer”, “inflammation”, “angiogenesis”,” immunology”, and “physiological mechanisms”. Results: Among several proposed mechanisms, inflammation, immunity and angiogenesis have been mentioned as important indices but there are ambiguities regarding the influence of different intensities and durations of exercise on breast cancer prevention and treatment. Other effective factors such as the effect of exercise on gene regulation and some other mechanisms have been proposed as possible mediators. Conclusion: According to some previous studies, aerobic exercise induces positive effects on preventing and treating breast cancer through reducing inflammation, improving angiogenesis, and enhancing immunological mechanisms. Regarding duration and intensity, long term regular exercise (&gt;8 weeks), in the form of aerobic and especially high intensity interval training (HIIT) reduces inflammation. while the effect of short-term exercise training is not clear yet and high intensity exercise may induce suppressing effects on the immune system. Therefore, the effect of intensity and duration of exercise on physiological mechanisms must be clarified.

EFFECTS OF SHORT-TERM PRACTICE OF FAST DEEP BREATHING EXERCISE ON PARASYMPATHETIC FUNCTIONS IN TRANS-FEMORAL AND TRANS-TIBIAL-AMPUTATION PATIENTS

Background of the Study: After lower limb amputation, the functioning parasympathetic system is compromised so the regular practice of breathing techniques improves cardiorespiratory functions. To determine the effects of short-term fast-breathing exercises on parasympathetic functions in amputees. Methodology: The study was conducted at the Armed Forces Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine Rawalpindi, on 61 stable transfemoral and transtibial amputation patients within the duration of six months (January to June 2017), performed fast deep breathing exercises Parasympathetic functions were observed through different variables. Data was analyzed using IBM® SPSS® v 21. Results: Breathing exercises showed significant effects on HR with a p-value of (0.000), the Valsalva ratio had a p-value of (0.000), and oxygen saturation was improved in both control and experimental groups with p-values of (0.000) and (0.000). Valsalva’s BP systolic and diastolic p values were (0.001) (0.012), breathing exercise BP systolic and diastolic values were (0.16) and (0.000), and orthostatic testing BP systolic and diastolic p values were (0.134) and (0.389). Post Borg scale readings showed a significant decrease in exertion level Conclusion: The study concludes that short-term fast deep breathing exercise improves cardiovagal functioning.

Effect of Short-term Deep Breathing Exercises on Perioperative Anxiety and Pain in Pediatric Orthopedic Patients: A Randomized Controlled Trial

PurposeThere are currently no pediatric studies examining the effects of deep breathing on perioperative pain and anxiety. This study sought to determine the effect of short-term deep breathing exercises on perioperative anxiety and pain in pediatric patients and their parents. DesignA randomized controlled trial was conducted in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery where pediatric patients about to undergo surgery were allocated to a control group or a deep breathing group. In the intervention group, patients and their main guardian were guided to practice 10 minutes of deep breathing exercises twice a day for 3 to 4 days prior to surgery. Perioperative anxiety and pain were measured for both the children and parents as outcome indicators. MethodsPerioperative anxiety was measured using the modified Yale Preoperative Anxiety Scale-Short Form (mYPAS-SF) and state anxiety was measured using the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI). Patients reported their pain levels daily using the Wong-Baker FACES Pain Rating Scale. The following cutoffs were determined as high levels of anxiety: STAI (adult) > 44, STAI (child) > 36, and mYPAS-SF ≥ 30. FindingsNo significant differences were found in the STAI, mYPAS-SF, and Wong-Baker FACES Pain Rating Scale scores of the patients between the intervention and control group. Overall statistics showed that parents had significantly higher postoperative state anxiety levels toward female children (44.93 ± 9.01) compared to male children (40.18 ± 9.89). Preoperative and postoperative parental state anxiety levels were correlated with the child’s postoperative anxiety. Furthermore, children’s postoperative state anxiety was slightly correlated with postoperative pain. ConclusionsShort-term use of our deep breathing exercises was ineffective in reducing incidences of perioperative pain and anxiety in pediatric orthopedic patients. A longer period of deep breathing administration may be required for the intervention to be effective. Parental anxiety may have an effect on anxiety levels in children, and postoperative parental anxiety may be affected by the gender of the child.

Aerobic exercise-induced HIF-1α upregulation in heart failure: exploring potential impacts on MCT1 and MPC1 regulation

BackgroundThe terminal stage of ischemic heart disease develops into heart failure (HF), which is characterized by hypoxia and metabolic disturbances in cardiomyocytes. The hypoxic failing heart triggers hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α) actions in the cells sensitized to hypoxia and induces metabolic adaptation by accumulating HIF-1α. Furthermore, soluble monocarboxylic acid transporter protein 1 (MCT1) and mitochondrial pyruvate carrier 1 (MPC1), as key nodes of metabolic adaptation, affect metabolic homeostasis in the failing rat heart. Aerobic exercise training has been reported to retard the progression of HF due to enhancing HIF-1α levels as well as MCT1 expressions, whereas the effects of exercise on MCT1 and MPC1 in HF (hypoxia) remain elusive. This research aimed to investigate the action of exercise associated with MCT1 and MPC1 on HF under hypoxia.MethodsThe experimental rat models are composed of four study groups: sham stented (SHAM), HF sedentary (HF), HF short-term exercise trained (HF-E1), HF long-term exercise trained (HF-E2). HF was initiated via left anterior descending coronary artery ligation, the effects of exercise on the progression of HF were analyzed by ventricular ultrasound (ejection fraction, fractional shortening) and histological staining. The regulatory effects of HIF-1α on cell growth, MCT1 and MPC1 protein expression in hypoxic H9c2 cells were evaluated by HIF-1α activatort/inhibitor treatment and plasmid transfection.ResultsOur results indicate the presence of severe pathological remodelling (as evidenced by deep myocardial fibrosis, increased infarct size and abnormal hypertrophy of the myocardium, etc.) and reduced cardiac function in the failing hearts of rats in the HF group compared to the SHAM group. Treadmill exercise training ameliorated myocardial infarction (MI)-induced cardiac pathological remodelling and enhanced cardiac function in HF exercise group rats, and significantly increased the expression of HIF-1α (p < 0.05), MCT1 (p < 0.01) and MPC1 (p < 0.05) proteins compared to HF group rats. Moreover, pharmacological inhibition of HIF-1α in hypoxic H9c2 cells dramatically downregulated MCT1 and MPC1 protein expression. This phenomenon is consistent with knockdown of HIF-1α at the gene level.ConclusionThe findings propose that long-term aerobic exercise training, as a non- pharmacological treatment, is efficient enough to debilitate the disease process, improve the pathological phenotype, and reinstate cardiac function in HF rats. This benefit is most likely due to activation of myocardial HIF-1α and upregulation of MCT1 and MPC1.

Short-term aerobic exercise prevents development of glucocorticoid myopathic features in aged skeletal muscle in a sex-dependent manner.

Older adults are vulnerable to glucocorticoid-induced muscle atrophy and weakness, with sex potentially influencing their susceptibility to those effects. Aerobic exercise can reduce glucocorticoid-induced muscle atrophy in young rodents. However, it is unknown whether aerobic exercise can prevent glucocorticoid myopathy in aged muscle. The objectives of this study were to define the extent to which sex influences the development of glucocorticoid myopathy in aged muscle, and to determine the extent to which aerobic exercise training protects against myopathy development. Twenty-four-month-old female (n = 30) and male (n = 33) mice were randomized to either sedentary or aerobic exercise groups. Within their respective groups, mice were randomized to either daily treatment with dexamethasone (DEX) or saline. Upon completing treatments, the contractile properties of the triceps surae complex were assessed in situ. DEX marginally lowered muscle mass and soluble protein content in both sexes, which was attenuated by aerobic exercise only in females. DEX increased sub-tetanic force and rate of force development only in females, which was not influenced by aerobic exercise. Muscle fatigue was higher in both sexes following DEX, but aerobic exercise prevented fatigue induction only in females. The sex-specific differences to muscle function in response to DEX treatment coincided with sex-specific changes to the content of proteins related to calcium handling, mitochondrial quality control, reactive oxygen species production, and glucocorticoid receptor in muscle. These findings define several important sexually dimorphic changes to aged skeletal muscle physiology in response to glucocorticoid treatment and define the capacity of short-term aerobic exercise to protect against those changes. KEY POINTS: There are sexually dimorphic effects of glucocorticoids on aged skeletal muscle physiology. Glucocorticoid-induced changes to aged muscle contractile properties coincide with sex-specific differences in the content of calcium handling proteins. Aerobic exercise prevents glucocorticoid-induced fatigue only in aged females and coincides with differences in the content of mitochondrial quality control proteins and glucocorticoid receptors.

Detraining after short-term exercise induces hyperphagia and obesity with fatty liver and brown adipose tissue whitening in young male OLETF rats.

This study examined the effects of exercise and detraining at a young age on fat accumulation in various organs. Four-week-old male Otsuka Long-Evans Tokushima Fatty (OLETF) rats were assigned to either the non-exercise sedentary (OLETF Sed) or exercise groups. The exercise group was subdivided into two groups: exercise between 4 and 12 weeks of age (OLETF Ex) and exercise between 4 and 6 weeks of age followed by non-exercise between 6 and 12 weeks of age (OLETF DT). Body weight was significantly lower in the OLETF Ex group than in the OLETF Sed group at 12 weeks of age. Fat accumulation in the epididymal white adipose tissue, liver, and brown adipose tissue was suppressed in the OLETF Ex group. During the exercise period, body weight and food intake in the OLETF DT group were significantly lower than those in the OLETF Sed group. However, food intake was significantly higher in the OLETF DT group than in the OLETF Sed group after exercise cessation, resulting in extreme obesity with fatty liver and brown adipose tissue whitening. Detraining after early-onset exercise promotes hyperphagia, causing extreme obesity. Overeating should be avoided during detraining periods in cases of exercise cessation at a young age.
