GSM-Enabled Home Automation and Security System: A Comprehensive Investigation and Implementation

This research project focused on integrating home control and security through advanced Home Automation Systems. A thorough analysis and practical implementation of home automation technology were conducted, utilizing Global System for Mobile Communication (GSM) modems to manage various home appliances, including fans, air conditioning systems, and security systems. The system relied on Short Message Service (SMS) text messages for control and monitoring. Key features included an entrance security mechanism to promptly notify homeowners of unauthorized access, bolstering overall security. Additionally, an anti-theft reporting system employed alarms and SMS notifications to inform owners of security breaches. The system also integrated safety protocols for fire or gas leakage, dispatching SMS notifications and activating alarms to alert homeowners. The use of GSM technology provided wireless access to control connected devices, enhancing system efficiency and convenience. This research contributed to the smart home technologies field by presenting an advanced system that harmonized automation, security, and safety, with potential applications across diverse residential settings. While numerous home automation systems were available in the market, the significance of the proposed home automation system lay in its advanced features and comprehensive approach to integrating control and security functions. Unlike many existing systems, which may have offered basic automation capabilities, the proposed system went beyond simple automation by seamlessly integrating security measures using GSM technology. This allowed homeowners to effectively manage a wide range of home appliances, including fans, air conditioning systems, and security systems, all through the convenience of SMS text messages. Key features of the proposed system, such as the entrance security mechanism and anti-theft reporting system, addressed critical security concerns and provided homeowners with real-time notifications of unauthorized access or security breaches. Additionally, the integration of safety protocols for fire or gas leakage further enhanced the system's utility and value by prioritizing homeowner safety. Moreover, the utilization of GSM technology offered wireless access to control connected devices, significantly enhancing system efficiency and convenience compared to traditional wired systems. This wireless connectivity ensured that homeowners could remotely monitor and control their home environment from anywhere, at any time, providing them with peace of mind and control over their living space. Overall, the proposed home automation system represented a significant advancement in the field of smart home technologies by offering a comprehensive solution that harmonized automation, security, and safety. Its potential applications across diverse residential settings underscored its importance and relevance in meeting the evolving needs of modern homeowners. Sistem Keamanan Rumah Menggunakan Sensor Passive Infrared Receiver dan SMS Gateway Berbasis Arduino

Weak security systems in a house provide opportunities and opportunities for other people who are not entitled to take and steal valuables for homeowners. Based on these problems, research was carried out by making a home security system using a passive infrared receiver sensor and an Arduino-based sms gateway. The system is designed using electronic devices such as Arduino Microcontroller as data processing, PIR sensor to detect movement in the house, buzzer as an alarm and GSM 900 A module as a communication medium in the form of SMS which is connected to the homeowner's cell phone. This system works when the PIR sensor (Passive InfraRed Receiver) detects a human entering the house and then Arduino sends data in the form of an alarm from the buzzer and sends a danger sign in the form of SMS (Short Message Service). The results of the research conducted on the PIR sensor with a distance of 30-150 cm on the object movement caused an alarm to sound originating from the buzzer and SMS notifications were also successfully sent to the homeowner every time there was movement or an open door detected by the PIR sensor. This research shows that technology can be a solution to prevent crime, especially at home through a home security system using PIR sensors and SMS Gateway

Prototype of movement monitoring Objects using Arduino Nano and SMS Notifications

Currently, the development of information technology is very rapid, coupled with the development of the internet of things which is also very fast. This encourages many researchers to use information technology devices and internet of things devices to solve problems in the field. The Internet of things is a device that can communicate between one device and another. Currently, there are many internets of things devices that have been used in everything, including Smart Home, Smart Office, Smart Campus, and others. There is a problem, where currently there is a lot of theft of goods or the transfer of goods that are not known by the owner. This problem encourages researchers to conduct research, by making prototypes to be able to find out about objects that have moved. So that the owner of the goods will know, that the goods have moved without notifying the owner. This research is to detect motion sensors using MPU6050. Where the sensor has two functions, namely accelerometer, and gyroscope. Both sensors are able to find the coordinates of the x-axis, y-axis, and z-axis. The most widely used and affordable microcontroller is the Arduino Nano or Arduino Uno. The purpose of this study is to detect motion with the MPU6050 sensor, then the detection results of the x-axis, y-axis, and z-axis are sent via SMS media with the SIM900A device. The use of a prototype has many functions, it can be used to detect falling objects, detect falling motorcycles, and others. This device is equipped with a SIM900A module which functions to transmit coordinate data via Short Message Service (SMS).

Prototype of Fire Detection Tool Using Short Message Service (SMS) Notification as A Disaster Mitigation Effort Against Environmental Damage Due to Forest Fires

In relation to the threat of drought, it is necessary to do a drought analysis to evaluate the drought that has occurred. Another disaster caused by water drought is forest fires. The purpose of this study using the prototype of a Forest Fire Detection Tool (FFDT) are to early detection of forest fires and providing Short Message Service (SMS) notification of forest fires to the officer. The method of this study used a prototype of a FFDT with SMS Notification. This tool is controlled using the ATmega328 microcontroller or better known as Arduino Uno R3 and also the GSM 800L v2 module so that this tool will provide notification to forest guards in the form of sirens and SMS sounds when there are indications of smoke or fire that are identical to the event of a forest fire. Monitoring uses fire sensors, namely fire for the detection of flames that are often associated with forest fires and uses sensors as soon as possible, namely MQ2 and MQ9, all of which are equipped in one device, a forest fire detector using the Arduino Mega microcontroller. When there is a good sign that the flame or as soon as possible is read, the tool will send an SMS notification to the forest officer, the process of sending the SMS makes the fire process can detect even though it is still in a small condition or not widened.

Automated Security Light Motion Sensor with SMS Notification

The purpose of this study was to assist the faculty of the Institute of Information and Computer Studies in securing their records and personal devices that were left at the office. This study made use of developmental-descriptive research. In software development, the Rapid Application Development (RAD) model was used. The system was developed using the n-tier architectural design. Because the developed system will be deployed in the IICS Building, the concerned faculty can be added as secondary users of the system so that they, along with the guard-on-duty, receive notification whenever there is motion detected during the night. A short message service (SMS) support is essential as a communication tool in notifying the room custodian and security guard-on-duty.

Public High School Web-Based Attendance Monitoring System with SMS Notification

This study put emphasis on the improvement of the current system used in Estancia National High School for the class advisers, subject teachers, and 4P’s Coordinator for the easy viewing and monitoring student’s attendance. A Short Message Service (SMS) Support, was added as an additional feature to inform parents or guardians that their child was absent. Reports can be printed in real-time. The developmental-descriptive research was employed in this study. The Rapid Application Development (RAD) was used as the model in the software development. The n-tier architectural design was used in development system. Since the developed system would be deployed at the Estancia National High School, the developed system will be applied by the person in-charge in monitoring the attendance of the students, it should provide proper maintenance to keep the system work well. A total of 51 respondents were surveyed as respondents of the study. The data were gathered through survey questionnaires that primarily solicited feedbacks from the respondents using the researchers-made survey instrument. The mean statistic was employed to describe the level of usability, understandability, learnability, and operability. Findings revealed that in terms of understandability, learnability, and operability, the developed system was describe as “Very Good” while its level of performance and efficiency in terms of in terms of time behavior and resource utilization was also described as “Very Good”. The usability features of the developed system was operational, accessible with effectiveness, efficiency, and the performance was appropriate to the need of the users.

Design and Construction of Additional Security Device for House Door Using Arduino Uno Based on Short Message Service

Security is a very important aspect of a house. The level of protection and comfort of the house certainly cannot be separated from how good the security system of the house is. The door is used for the main entrance and exit of the house. When the owner of the house is inside, the door can be locked from the inside with the addition of a slop lock on the door. However, if the owner of the house leaves, the door is only locked using a regular key without any additional keys on the inside of the door. So that the door of the house can be opened only by "lockpick" by an irresponsible person. Such problems can be prevented by installing additional security devices on the door of the house that can be controlled to lock the inside of the door and can provide early warning to homeowners through SMS (Short Message Service) notifications on cell phones. The components used in this system are Arduino Uno microcontroller, Servo Motor, Vibration Sensor (SW-420), Buzzer, Magnetic Switch MC-38, and GSM SIM800L V2. The prototype worked well and reach the research’s objective.

QR-Code tracking and SMS notification transaction interface for scholarship management system

ABSTRACT Information system (IS) is a product of information technology (IT) that supports various business functions utilizing advanced technology comprising hardware, software, people, network, and data. Scholarship management systems is one example of an information system that is designed to assist with the scholarship awarding process of any university. When designing such systems, it is important to consider the reusability of certain components instead of developing an entire software from scratch. In this article, a scholarship management system was developed integrating a quick response code (QR-Code) tracking and short message service (SMS) notification transaction interface. The results of this study showed a high rating from two perspective evaluators with regards to its system functionality, execution, generality as well as its reusability in its source code.

Prototipe smart home berbasis mikrokontroler arduino dan smart phone

In this study, a home electrical control system and electronic components were designed using an Arduino Uno R3 microcontroller equipped with a motion sensor and connected to a Bluetooth module and a GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) SIM (Subscriber Identification Module) module. In addition, the Smart Home prototype will also be equipped with earthquake detection sensors, fire sensors and sensors as soon as possible to deal with early earthquakes and fire detection. The purpose of research is to see the performance of the smart home system. The research method used is a research method with methods and making and testing Smart home prototypes. Testing is done by running the system to see the performance of the system being made. From the research results it can be ignored that the electrical control system and electronic components made using the Arduino Uno R3 microcontroller and the Bluetooth module and the GSM SIM module can work properly, the electrical system and electronic components can be turned on and off using a GSM SIM and Bluetooth module. The security system uses motion sensors and a GSM SIM module to work properly, the system can send SMS (Short Message Service) notifications to homeowners if human movement. The earthquake and fire detection sensor system in the smart home prototype can work properly, the system can turn on notification alarms when an earthquake and wait for fire and as soon as possible. Two-by-two factorial randomised study within a trial (SWAT) to evaluate strategies for follow-up in a randomised prevention trial

BackgroundFailure to collect outcome data in randomised trials can result in bias and loss of statistical power. Further evaluations of strategies to increase retention are required. We assessed the effectiveness of two strategies for retention in a randomised prevention trial using a two-by-two factorial randomised study within a trial (SWAT).MethodsParents of babies included in the host trial were randomised to (1) short message service (SMS) notification prior to sending questionnaires at 3, 6, 12 and 18 months versus no SMS notification and (2) a £10 voucher sent with the invitation letter for the primary follow-up visit at 24 months or given at the visit. The two co-primary outcomes were collection of host trial (1) questionnaire data at interim follow-up times and (2) primary outcome at 24 months during a home/clinic visit with a research nurse.ResultsBetween November 2014 and November 2016, 1394 participants were randomised: 350 to no SMS + voucher at visit, 345 to SMS + voucher at visit, 352 to no SMS + voucher before visit and 347 to SMS + voucher before visit. Overall questionnaire data was collected at interim follow-up times for 75% in both the group allocated to the prior SMS notification and the group allocated to no SMS notification (odds ratio (OR) SMS versus none 1.02, 95% CI 0.83 to 1.25). Host trial primary outcome data was collected at a visit for 557 (80%) allocated to the voucher before the visit in the invitation letter and for 566 (81%) whose parents were allocated to receive the voucher at the visit (OR before versus at visit 0.89, 95% CI 0.69 to 1.17).ConclusionThere was no evidence of a difference in retention according to SMS notification or voucher timing. Future synthesis of SWAT results is required to be able to detect small but important incremental effects of retention strategies.Trial registrationISRCTN registry, ID: ISRCTN21528841. Mobile Health Technologies May Be Acceptable Tools for Providing Social Support to Tuberculosis Patients in Rural Uganda: A Parallel Mixed-Method Study.

Background Social support has been shown to mitigate social barriers to medication adherence and improve tuberculosis (TB) treatment success rates. The use of mobile technology to activate social support systems among TB patients, however, has not been well explored. Moreover, studies that tie supportive SMS (Short Message Service) texts to electronic monitoring of TB medication adherence are lacking. Objective To explore TB patients' current access to social support and perceptions of utilizing real-time adherence monitoring interventions to support medication adherence. Methods We purposively selected TB patients who owned phones, had been taking TB medications for ≥1 month, were receiving their treatment from Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital, and reported having ≥1 social supporter. We interviewed these patients and their social supporters about their access to and perceptions of social support. We used STATA 13 to describe participants' sociodemographic and social support characteristics. Qualitative data were analyzed using content analysis to derive categories describing accessibility and perceptions. Results TB patients report requesting and receiving a variety of different forms of social support, including instrumental (e.g., money for transport and other needs and medication reminders), emotional (e.g., adherence counselling), and informational (e.g., medication side effects) support through mobile phones. Participants felt that SMS notifications may motivate medication adherence by creating a personal sense of obligation to take medications regularly. Participants anticipated that limited financial resources and relationship dynamics could constrain the provision of social support especially when patients and social supporters are not oriented about their expectations. Conclusion Mobile telephones could provide alternative approaches to providing social support for TB medication adherence especially where patients do not stay close to their social supporters. Further efforts should focus on optimized designs of mobile phone-based applications for providing social support to TB patients and training of TB patients and social supporters to match their expectations.

ANotify: A Fingerprint Biometric-Based and Attendance Web-Based Management System with SMS Notification for Industrial Sector

Managing people is a difficult task and maintaining the attendance record is an important factor for most of the organizations. Meanwhile, in the industrial sector, a precise attendance record system of the employees is important for companies, especially for the payroll process. There are various existing technology that has been implemented to help an industrial sector to manage their attendance records. The use of current technology such as fingerprint biometric scanner and mobile devices as a complement to the software development will benefits to the industrial sector in order to enhance their services. This paper described a fingerprint biometric-based and web-based management system integrated with short message service (SMS) notification for attendance records of the employees known ANotify. It was specifically developed for an industrial sector that uses fingerprint as biometric features for employee attendance, is able to store records of employees’ attendance in organized, systematic, and the SMS alert notification to the supervisors about the employee attendance reports. This system was developed based on System Development Life Cycle (SDLC) as a methodology. A user acceptance test was conducted with thirty (30) respondents to determine the effectiveness of the system by evaluating the questionnaire which was categorized into three (3) parts included user interface satisfaction, perceived ease of use, and integration of SMS notification. Results of the system evaluation showed that the system has a positive impact and to be well accepted by users, convenient, economic and reliable method of notification for the attendance records

Short message service (SMS) reminders and real-time adherence monitoring improve antiretroviral therapy adherence in rural Uganda.

Objective:To explore the effects of four types of short message service (SMS) plus real-time adherence monitoring on antiretroviral therapy (ART) adherence: daily reminders, weekly reminders, reminders triggered after a late or missed dose (delivered to patients), and notifications triggered by sustained adherence lapses (delivered to patient-nominated social supporters).Design:Pilot randomized controlled trial.Methods:Sixty-three individuals initiating ART received a real-time adherence monitor and were randomized (1 : 1 : 1): (1) Scheduled SMS reminders (daily for 1 month, weekly for 2 months), then SMS reminders triggered by a late or missed dose (no monitoring signal within 2 h of expected dosing); SMS notifications to social supporters for sustained adherence lapses (no monitoring signal for >48 h) added after 3 months. (2) Triggered SMS reminders starting at enrolment; SMS notifications to social supporters added after 3 months. (3) Control: No SMS. HIV RNA was determined at 9 months. Percentage adherence and adherence lapses were compared by linear generalized estimating equations and Poisson regression, respectively.Results:Median age was 31 years, 65% were women, and median enrolment CD4+ cell count was 322 cells/μl 97% took once daily tenofovir/emtricitabine/efavirenz. Compared to control, adherence was 11.1% higher (P = 0.04) and more than 48-h lapses were less frequent (IRR 0.6, P = 0.02) in the scheduled SMS arm. Adherence and more than 48-h lapses were similar in the triggered SMS arm and control. No differences in HIV RNA were seen.Conclusion:Scheduled SMS reminders improved ART in the context of real-time monitoring. Larger studies are needed to determine the impact of triggered reminders and role of social supporters in improving adherence.

Electronic referral in orthopaedics benefitting patients and the system

Introduction: The orthopaedic unit at the Teaching Hospital, Ragama is the referral centre for three large hospitals, having the only orthopaedic surgeon in the entire Gampaha district (with a population in excess of two million). Each day, patients are transferred for orthopaedic opinion and for further management at inconvenience to the patient and cost to the hospital. An electronic mail link between two units is easily set up at minimal cost as a route for telemedicine. Method: A surgical unit at district general hospital Gampaha served as a referring unit. A template was used. History, management, digital photographs of radiographs, and of the wound where relevant were electronically mailed with Short Message Service notification. Trauma patients requiring orthopaedic opinion were included in the process except those whom the surgeon decided needed immediate transfer (to Ragama for orthopaedics or to Colombo for neurosurgery) Results: Eighty four patients were referred in 43 batches. The initial management at Gampaha was considered satisfactory in 40 (48%). Minor corrections were advised in 14 (17%). Eleven, (13%)were to be reviewed in the clinic at Ragama. Only 4 (5%) required immediate transfer. Maximum delay in obtaining an opinion was 12 hours (overnight). Overall, 62 (74%) patients were saved a four hour round trip.Anestimated thirty four ambulance journeys including 3 to 4 staff members per journey were saved. Conclusion: Electronic referral in orthopaedics is feasible. Inconvenience to patients is reduced while the hospital will save time and money. Design and Implementation of a University-Based Information Service Centre with SMS Notification (Obafemi Awolowo University as a Case Study)

Coordination of learners and resources form the basic process in the delivery of education in Universities. The use of mobile computing can be proved to be of immense help in this coordination. This paper presents the description of a suitable software system that can deliver information services with mobile functionality to the content subscriber (student in this case) using Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife (OAU) as a case study. The mobility provided was achieved using Short Message Service (SMS) over Global System for Mobile Communication (GSM) Network with the hardware implemented on a GSM Nokia phone acting as a modem. Object-Oriented Analysis and Design (OOAD) approach with the Unified Modeling Language (UML) was employed to document the software artifacts of the applications. The proposed system was implemented using Java programming language. The software developed integrated subscription, payment and billing, user profile management, efficient mobile architecture, and ease of content publishing, all loosely coupled, to allow for further extension to the service architecture.
