Can spatial and temporal differences in fish assemblage structure inform conservation of an endangered sucker in a large western reservoir?

AbstractObjectiveConversion of lotic to lentic habitat after river impoundment can lead to habitat loss and threats from introduced species to native aquatic organisms. Some native species can persist in reservoirs despite these alterations. Some of the largest reservoirs in North America were constructed in the Colorado River basin and are used by endangered Razorback Sucker Xyrauchen texanus. This species successfully spawns in several reservoirs and recruits to adulthood in Lake Mead, whereas recruitment in other reservoirs and altered river habitats is limited or nonexistent. Hypothesized mechanisms for the general lack of recruitment include flow and habitat alteration as well as competition and predation from nonnative fishes.MethodsWe analyzed 16 years of netting data from Lake Mead to assess spatial and temporal patterns in fish assemblage structure and the size structure of Razorback Sucker across four sites.ResultThere was a substantial shift in assemblage structure across all sites after the establishment of Gizzard Shad Dorosoma cepedianum in 2010–2011 and an apparent decline in Threadfin Shad D. petenense. Captures of juvenile Razorback Sucker (<450 mm total length in Lake Mead) were higher at sites where overall fish abundance was also higher, suggesting that all fishes might be responding to similar spatial and temporal environmental variation. We identified differences in Razorback Sucker size structure that varied over time and among sites, largely driven by the presence of juvenile Razorback Sucker at some sites in some years.ConclusionRazorback Sucker was among the top‐10 most abundant species at all sites sampled, but assemblages were dominated by abundant nonnative fishes. Razorback Sucker continue to recruit in Lake Mead in the face of abundant and diverse nonnative fishes, but the adult population size remains relatively small (<1000). Further investigation of limiting factors will be necessary to understand which actions might be successful at improving recruitment conditions.

Spatial variability in the structure of fish assemblages associated with Laminaria hyperborea forests in the NE Atlantic

Understanding fish-habitat associations is critical for ecosystem-based approaches to management and conservation. Kelp species, which are estimated to inhabit around 25% of the world's coastline and underpin highly productive and biodiverse ecosystems, are widely recognised as important nursery and foraging habitats for coastal fish species. However, quantitative assessments of fish assemblages within kelp forests are lacking for many regions. Here, we used Baited Remote Underwater Video (BRUV) and Underwater Visual Census (UVC) to quantify fish assemblages in Laminaria hyperborea forests at eight shallow subtidal rocky reefs that spanned 9° of latitude in the United Kingdom (UK). Fish assemblages were a ubiquitous and conspicuous component of kelp forest communities at all sites. BRUV surveys recorded marked regional-scale variability, with latitudinal shifts in assemblage structure and particularly distinct assemblages recorded in southwest England. These patterns were largely due to greater abundances of Pollachius spp. (i.e. saithe and pollock) in northern regions and higher numbers of Gobiusculus flavescens (two-spotted goby) and labrid species (i.e. rock cook, goldsinny and ballan wrasses) in southern regions. Unlike BRUVs, UVC surveys did not detect significant regional-scale variation in assemblage structure but did detect significant site-level differences, highlighting differences between the two techniques. BRUV surveys also recorded clear latitudinal trends in richness, with more taxa recorded at lower latitudes. Fish assemblages in the NE Atlantic have been, and will continue to be, impacted by ocean warming and fishing activities. Greater spatiotemporal coverage of kelp forest surveys and ongoing robust monitoring is needed to better understand and manage future ecological changes.

Fish Assemblages in the Penobscot River: A Decade after Dam Removal

AbstractThe Penobscot River Restoration Project in Maine was a large river rehabilitation project that culminated in the removal of the two lowermost dams and improvements to fish passage on several remaining dams. Fish assemblages were surveyed for 3 years prior to rehabilitation, 3 years after rehabilitation, and 8 years after rehabilitation. Approximately 475 km of shoreline were sampled via boat electrofishing, yielding 133,394 individual fish of 41 species. The greatest shifts in assemblage structure occurred immediately after dam removal in formerly impounded sections, with an increased prevalence of riverine and migratory species. Long‐term sampling documented changes within tributaries and tidally influenced river segments, where large schools of adult and young‐of‐the‐year alosines increased in abundance. Upstream of the lowermost dam, the river remains dominated by lacustrine species, while adult anadromous fishes continue to be most abundant immediately downstream of the lowermost dam. Our results provide increased evidence that dam removals result in altered fish assemblages, which are now dominated by riverine and anadromous species in previously impounded habitats. Alosines in the Penobscot River have exhibited the greatest long‐term response to river restoration efforts.

Spatial and temporal patterns in the coral assemblage at Clipperton Atoll: a sentinel reef in the Eastern Tropical Pacific

Isolated coral reef habitats are unique systems to study the natural dynamics of coral traits and their natural acclimatization, adaptation, and recovery from global-scale stressors such as thermally induced bleaching events. This study evaluates the spatial and temporal changes in coral community attributes (diversity, live cover, and coral assemblage structure) over 14 years (2005–2019) at Clipperton, an extremely remote Eastern Tropical Pacific (ETP) atoll. The atoll exhibited overall high coral cover (~ 50–60%) dominated by massive species (Porites spp.), yet we observed large variation (44–56%) in coral community attributes among survey years (2005, 2016, 2019) with depth explaining most of the variation. Live coral cover increased in 2019 after a severe thermal stress event (El Niño, 2015–2016) and many tropical cyclones, which also caused a shift in assemblage structure from branching Pocillopora to massive Porites in the shallower reef zones, resulting in a less well-defined depth gradient. These changes in coral assemblage structure may have long-term effects on the configuration of the physical reef framework of the well-conserved coral reef ecosystems at Clipperton and consequently may alter the ecological functionality of one of the most important biogeographic stepping stones in the central Pacific and ETP regions.

Response of fish assemblages to restoration of rapids habitat in a Great Lakes connecting channel

Rapids habitats are critical spawning and nursery grounds for multiple Laurentian Great Lakes fishes of ecological importance such as lake sturgeon, walleye, and salmonids. However, river modifications have destroyed important rapids habitat in connecting channels by modifying flow profiles and removing large quantities of cobble and gravel that are preferred spawning substrates of several fish species. The conversion of rapids habitat to slow moving waters has altered fish assemblages and decreased the spawning success of lithophilic species. The St. Marys River is a Great Lakes connecting channel in which the majority of rapids habitat has been lost. However, rapids habitat was restored at the Little Rapids in 2016 to recover important spawning habitat in this river. During the restoration, flow and substrate were recovered to rapids habitat. We sampled the fish community (pre- and post-restoration), focusing on age-0 fishes in order to characterize the response of the fish assemblage to the restoration, particularly for species of importance (e.g. lake whitefish, walleye, Atlantic salmon). Following restoration, we observed a 40% increase in age-0 fish catch per unit effort, increased presence of rare species, and a shift in assemblage structure of age-0 fishes (higher relative abundance of Salmonidae, Cottidae, and Gasterosteidae). We also observed a “transition” period in 2017, in which the assemblage was markedly different from the pre- and post-restoration assemblages and was dominated by Catostomidae. Responses from target species were mixed, with increased Atlantic salmon abundance, first documented presence of walleye and no presence of lake sturgeon or Coregoninae.

Ocean warming and species range shifts affect rates of ecosystem functioning by altering consumer-resource interactions.

Recent warming trends have driven widespread changes in the performance and distribution of species in many regions, with consequent shifts in assemblage structure and ecosystem functioning. However, as responses to warming vary across species and regions, novel communities are emerging, particularly where warm-affinity range-expanding species have rapidly colonized communities still dominated by cold-affinity species. Such community reconfiguration may alter core ecosystem processes, such as productivity or nutrient cycling, yet it remains unclear whether novel communities function similarly to those they have replaced, and how continued warming will alter functioning in the near future. Using simplified kelp forest communities as a model system, we compared rates of respiration, consumption and secondary productivity between current cold-affinity and future warm-affinity kelp assemblages under both present-day temperatures and near-future warming in a series of mesocosm experiments. Overall, respiration rates of gastropods and amphipods increased with warming but did not differ between cold and warm affinity kelp assemblages. Consumption rates of three consumers (urchin, gastropod and amphipod) differed between kelp assemblages but only amphipod consumption rates increased with warming. A diet derived from warm-affinity kelp assemblages led to a decrease in growth and biomass of urchins, whereas the response of other consumers was variable depending on temperature treatment. These results suggest that climate-driven changes in assemblage structure of primary producers will alter per capita rates of ecosystem functioning, and that specific responses may vary in complex and unpredictable ways, with some mediated by warming more than others. Understanding how differences in life history and functional traits of dominant species will affect ecological interactions and, in turn, important ecosystem processes is crucial to understanding the wider implications of climate-driven community reconfiguration.

Monoculture and mixture-planting of non-native Douglas fir alters species composition, but promotes the diversity of ground beetles in a temperate forest system

Planting non-native tree species, like Douglas fir in temperate European forest systems, is encouraged to mitigate effects of climate change. However, Douglas fir monocultures often revealed negative effects on forest biota, while effects of mixtures with native tree species on forest ecosystems are less well understood. We investigated effects of three tree species (Douglas fir, Norway spruce, native European beech), on ground beetles in temperate forests of Germany. Beetles were sampled in monocultures of each tree species and broadleaf-conifer mixtures with pitfall traps, and environmental variables were assessed around each trap. We used linear mixed models in a two-step procedure to disentangle effects of environment and tree species identity on ground beetle abundance, species richness, functional diversity and species assemblage structure. Contradictory to our expectations, ground beetle abundance and functional diversity was highest in pure Douglas fir stands, while tree mixtures showed intermediate values between pure coniferous and pure beech stands. The main drivers of these patterns were only partially dependent on tree species identity, which highlights the importance of structural features in forest stands. However, our study revealed distinct shifts in assemblage structure between pure beech and pure Douglas fir stands, which were only partially eased through mixture planting. Our findings suggest that effects of planting non-native trees on associated biodiversity can be actively modified by promoting beneficial forest structures. Nevertheless, integrating non-native tree species, even in mixtures with native trees, will invariably alter assemblage structures of associated biota, which can compromise conservation efforts targeted at typical species composition.

Environmental disturbance events drive declines in juvenile wrasse biomass on inshore coral reefs of the Great Barrier Reef

Environmental disturbances and fishing are well known drivers of coral reef fish population size, length-frequency, and assemblage structure. However, few studies have partitioned the spatial and temporal impacts of multiple disturbance events and long-term no-take marine reserve (NTMR) protection on the biomass of juvenile and adult reef-fishes based on the known size of sexual maturity. Here, we document responses in the biomass of juvenile and adult wrasses (Labridae) Hemigymnus melapterus, H. fasciatus, Cheilinus fasciatus, and Oxycheilinus digramma, to environmental disturbance events, NTMR protection, and predator density on inshore fringing coral reefs at the Palm and Whitsunday Island groups, Great Barrier Reef (GBR), Australia from 2007 to 2018 (12 years). The biomass of juvenile and adult wrasses on inshore GBR reefs were driven predominantly by benthic habitat associations, rather than by NTMR protection or density of wrasse predators (Plectropomus spp.). Despite similar species-specific associations of juvenile and adult wrasses with benthic cover, juvenile wrasse biomass consistently declined following coral bleaching and cyclone events. Conversely, adult wrasses had variable responses to disturbance events, including some increases in biomass. Disturbance-mediated declines in the biomass of juvenile wrasses are likely to generate ongoing reductions in the abundance of these species on inshore GBR reefs. Our findings provide further evidence that habitat loss impacts a range of coral reef fishes beyond those that are directly reliant upon live coral. Shifts in assemblage structure, loss of biodiversity, and reductions in fishery productivity will become increasingly apparent in coral reef ecosystems if anthropogenic global warming continues unabated.

Metabarcoding mites: Three years of elevated CO2 has no effect on oribatid assemblages in a Eucalyptus woodland

Elevated atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations (eCO2) are known to significantly impact aboveground vegetation, with cascading effects on belowground systems. However, the effects of altered biogeochemical and hydrological cycles on belowground faunal assemblages remain unclear. Oribatid mites are abundant and hyperdiverse litter decomposers, with the potential to act as bioindicators of ecosystem disturbance. Here, we assessed oribatid mite assemblages under ambient and eCO2 (ambient +150 ppm) at the Eucalyptus Free-Air CO2 Enrichment (EucFACE) facility using high-throughput sequencing of the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase 1 (COI) gene. Our aims were to i) quantify the effect of eCO2 on mite abundance and diversity, and ii) evaluate metabarcoding as a reliable approach for the rapid assessment of oribatid mite assemblages. Three years of eCO2 exposure resulted in lower soil pH but had no significant impact on mite abundances or oribatid mite assemblage structure. Instead, mite densities were found to correlate negatively with soil NH4+, while oribatid species richness using both morphological and metabarcoding datasets were positively correlated with total soil nitrogen content. Additionally, metabarcoding showed that oribatid mite assemblage structure was correlated with total soil carbon and nitrogen content, and soil pH. However, dissimilarity matrices based on the two approaches were not correlated, indicating that metabarcoding can be used as a proxy for shifts in assemblage structure but cannot be directly compared with morphological datasets. This study demonstrates how metabarcoding can rapidly assess belowground assemblages, providing a useful monitoring tool under current and future climate scenarios.

Linking life history strategies and historical baseline information shows effects of altered flow regimes and impoundments on freshwater mussel assemblages

Abstract Human impacts on aquatic ecosystems are causing shifts in the composition and distribution of species, leading to subsequent changes in community structure. However, these changes may not be fully realised because of inadequate baseline information. In Texas, such baseline information is generally lacking for cryptic aquatic species such as unionid mussels, which will be likely to impede identification of impacted populations, potential causal factors, and the setting or achieving of management goals. The Navasota River, located in central Texas, is an exception, having been comprehensively surveyed more than 40 years ago, prior to large‐scale impoundment of this system. Hierarchical cluster analysis, nonmetric multidimensional scaling, and fuzzy set ordination were performed to compare assemblage structure from the 1975 survey to that of a recent survey in 2016 at similar sampling locations. Comparing sites based on the presence–absence of mussel species, we found no significant differences between the number of taxa and species present; however, we did find significant filtering of mussel life history strategies. Specifically, prior to impoundment, we found that mussel assemblages were filtered based on longitudinal patterns in life history strategy from taxa that are adapted to disturbed habitats to those favoured in more stable habitats with low environmental variation. However, following large‐scale impoundment after 1975, we saw a shift in the hydrologic regime towards consistent, homogenised flows and a shift in assemblage structure towards equilibrium species. This shift appears to represent a discontinuity, wherein river impoundment alters physical parameters of the hydrologic regime and these changes in turn modify biotic patterns and processes. Our results provide another example of how large dams can restructure mussel assemblages, highlight the importance of incorporating reference or baseline conditions wherever possible when evaluating the conservation status of aquatic biota, and provide further evidence for the use of life history theory and the serial discontinuity concept in predicting the consequences of flow alteration and river impoundment.

Interannual variation of bycatch assemblages of artisanal bottom shrimp-trawling on the Patos Lagoon estuary, Brazil

One of the most concerning problems of trawl fisheries today is the bycatch, especially given that over the last decade the Ecological Approach to Fisheries (EAF) has increased in importance. Bycatch variation is an important issue in fisheries management, since non-representative assessments of this topic can lead to the implementation of inadequate legislation. The assemblages of bycatch species in shrimp trawlings on the Patos Lagoon estuary and their relation to salinity, the size of the main species captured, and the bycatch to shrimp ratio were studied. Samples were taken between January 2011 and May 2014, encompassing four fishing seasons. We analyzed a total of 173 trawls, containing a joint total of 32,835 individuals. Sixty-one different types of bycatch species were captured, which were mostly (>80%) juveniles/non-mature individuals of commercial species. Eleven species dominated the captures, the most abundant of which were Micropogonias furnieri (FO > 82%), Callinectes sapidus (FO > 90%) and Genidens barbus (FO between 1.30–66.7%). There was a shift in assemblage structure according to salinity, which was reflected in the presence or absence of the lesser abundant species, but also in shifts on the density of the dominant species. Temperature was similar throughout the studied fishing seasons (23.9 ±3.3∘C), but salinity varied between 8.6 and 21.9. The bycatch to shrimp ratio was very high during the studied period (2011 = 3.3:1; 2012 = 2.6:1; 2013 = 8.7:1; 2014 = 65:1), but highest values were recorded when salinity was lower. However, even when environmental conditions favored pink shrimp abundance (high salinity), the ecological impact of this fishery was high, confirmed by the higher richness of species in the samples. Results call for a better fisheries management and supervision of illegal trawls.

Indicators of pelagic forage community shifts in the California Current Large Marine Ecosystem, 1998–2016

Forage fishes are ecologically and economically important in marine ecosystems worldwide and thus are a focal topic for ecosystem-based fisheries management. In the California Current Large Marine Ecosystem (CCLME), the community dynamics of forage populations have been studied at regional spatial scales, but not across regions. To evaluate indicators of the forage community at the ecosystem-wide scale, we examine temporal variability of forage assemblages in Northern (Oregon/Washington), Central (California; Point Reyes to Monterey Bay) and Southern (southern California) regions of the CCLME from 1998 through 2016 which include years with unprecedented climate variability. Forage communities fluctuated greatly between years within each region owing to regionally low abundances of common taxa in at least some years (e.g., rockfishes Sebastes spp. in each region). Comparison of species assemblages among regions indicate that that temporal shifts in assemblage structure were largely synchronous throughout the CCLME. However, dynamics of most individual taxa were out of phase between regions, indicating that different taxa drove the variability in each region. Within regions, taxa with similar adult ecological niches tended to co-vary, suggesting synchronous responses to environmental forcing. Major changes in forage assemblage structure are descriptively linked to large oceanographic perturbations such as the transition from El Niño to La Niña conditions in 1998, anomalous upwelling in 2005, and the onset of a large marine heatwave in fall-winter 2013–2014. Changes in forage assemblage structure are reflected in prey switching in the diet of California sea lions, Zalophus californianus, in the Southern region. The multivariate forage indices that we develop can serve as effective indicators of regional forage community composition shifts in the CCLME and provide managers with context on spatio-temporal changes in the structure of forage fish communities important to top predators in this system.

Large scale variability in the structure of sessile invertebrate assemblages in artificial habitats reveals the importance of local-scale processes

Natural communities are structured by a complex suite of interacting physical and biological processes that operate across multiple spatial and temporal scales. Documenting spatiotemporal variability in ecological patterns can yield insights into the key processes influencing the distributions of species and structure of communities. Many previous studies conducted in natural habitats have recorded systematic shifts in assemblage structure along broad-scale latitudinal gradients, largely because of individual species' thermal affinities. However, it remains unclear as to whether similar patterns occur in artificial habitats, where patterns could be decoupled from natural processes. In this study, we examined patterns of spatial variability in the structure of sessile invertebrate assemblages in coastal infrastructure at multiple scales, including along a large-scale latitudinal gradient in Western Australia (WA). We deployed settlement panel arrays to sample invertebrate assemblages at 5 regions (in 2 seasons) along a latitudinal gradient spanning about 16° and >2000km along the coast of WA. As sea temperature co-varies predictably with latitude in this system, the study also encompassed a temperature gradient of about 10°C. We examined spatiotemporal variability in several assemblage-level metrics, including total biomass, total cover, taxonomic richness and multivariate structure, as well as variability patterns for individual taxa. Unlike assemblages associated with natural habitats along the WA coastline, sessile invertebrate assemblages on coastal infrastructure did not vary systematically with latitude/temperature. Assemblage structure demonstrated little predictability at the regional scale, driven by processes including variability in temperature and adjacent species pools. Rather local-scale variability (and presumably processes and conditions acting at this scale) was far more important. This is an important consideration for coastal managers as local factors (e.g. the design of coastal infrastructure, human activities, hydrodynamic processes and propagule pressure) are likely to be important determinants of ecological pattern, with implications for the spread and establishment of non-indigenous species, biofouling and general ecological structure and functioning.

Regional-scale variability in the response of benthic macroinvertebrate assemblages to a marine heatwave

Extreme climatic events are predicted to increase in severity as a consequence of anthropogenic climate change. In marine ecosystems, the importance of marine heatwaves (MHWs)—discrete periods of anomalously high sea temperatures—is gaining recognition. In 2011, the highest-magnitude MHW ever recorded impacted the west coast of Australia (southeast Indian Ocean). The MHW was associated with widespread mortality of habitat-forming species, including corals and kelps, and structural changes in assemblages of macroalgae and fish. However, the responses of benthic macroinvertebrate assemblages have not yet been fully documented. Here, we resurveyed 2 subtidal habitat types (reef ‘flats’ and ‘slopes’) at 4 locations (spanning >800 km of coastline and >6° of latitude) during the period 1999-2015 to examine the effects of the 2011 MHW on herbivorous macroinvertebrates (i.e. sea urchins, gastropod molluscs). Responses to the MHW varied with latitude; at our warmest study location, abundances were severely depleted, whereas no effects were detected at the coolest location. Across the entire study region, subtle but significant shifts in assemblage structure were observed due to decreased abundances of more southerly-distributed species (i.e. ‘cool’ affinity) and increased abundances of several more northerly-distributed species (i.e. ‘warm’ affinity). The 2011 MHW has had profound effects on the marine biota off the west coast of Australia, across multiple trophic levels and taxonomic groups. Here, as in many other regions, contemporary warming events are superimposed onto gradual warming trends, increasing the likelihood of abrupt changes in ecosystem structure and functioning.

Dynamics of Near‐Coastal Fish Assemblages following the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill in the Northern Gulf of Mexico

AbstractCoastal ecosystems along the northern Gulf of Mexico are highly productive and are affected by fishing and petroleum industries in different, sometimes contrasting, ways. As a result of the Deepwater Horizon (DWH) oil spill in April 2010, oil and oil dispersants were introduced into the northern Gulf of Mexico. At the same time, large portions of the Gulf of Mexico were closed to commercial and recreational fishing for most of the 2010 summer. This presented a unique opportunity to study the dynamics of a fish assemblage exposed to changes in two disparate types of anthropogenic disturbances. We compared assemblage data for near‐coastal fish (456 samples representing over 45,000 individuals and 109 species) from pre‐DWH (before 2010) and post‐DWH (2011–2014) to assess potential changes in abundance, diversity (alpha, beta, and gamma), and assemblage structure. In contrast to predicted oil‐induced mortality, post‐DWH assemblages were characterized by high abundance in 2011 (CPUE across all species pooled was 2.5 times higher than in any other year). This high abundance was most pronounced in medium‐sized fish species that are direct targets of commercial fishing or likely bycatch. Abundances returned to levels similar to pre‐DWH in 2012, 2013, and 2014. There were no differences in pre‐ and post‐DWH levels of diversity, and shifts in assemblage structure may be consistent with increases driven by reduced fishing pressure. While other assemblages and ecosystems may respond differently, our data for the near‐coastal fish assemblage indicated the effects of the DWH were minimal. Rigorous empirical data from other systems are required to assess potential DWH impacts across the range of ecosystems potentially affected.

In situ effects of human disturbances on coral reef-fish assemblage structure: temporary and persisting changes are reflected as a result of intensive tourism

Non-lethal human disturbances are often drivers of change in animal population and community structure. To gauge their severity, short-term behaviour (e.g. avoidance and habituation) has been argued to be a sensitive measure. However, many of these behavioural changes may occur only if disturbance-free habitat is readily accessible. In coral-reef fish, we tested whether human disturbances from intensive (i.e. loud music, swimming, snorkelling, splashing and fish feeding by numerous visitors) tourist visitations resulted in assemblage structure shifts led by short-term behaviour. We monitored fish assemblage before, during and after tourist visitations to monitor changes associated with behaviour. Additionally, we monitored two adjacent reefs not visited by tourists because of difficult approach by boat. We posited that if short-term benefits of relocating to disturbance-free habitat outweigh the costs of tolerating disturbances, fish assemblage structure should shift along with tourist visitation levels. By contrast, if sensitive species are unable or unwilling to relocate, we predicted greater levels of assemblage heterogeneity between the visited and control reefs. Our results showed that in situ human visitations led to significant shifts in assemblage structure, resulting from short-term behavioural changes. Additionally, we showed significant between-reefs differences, whereby control reefs were characterised by higher species richness, larger fish sizes and variations in relative trophic guild prevalence. Our results suggest that short-term relocations to adjacent disturbance-free reefs may not mitigate the effects of human disturbances.

Downstream fish assemblage response to river impoundment varies with degree of hydrologic alteration

River impoundments can fundamentally restructure downstream fish assemblages by altering flow regimes. However, the degree of alteration and associated ecological change may depend on pre-existing hydrologic regimes. We used long-term datasets to compare downstream hydrological and fish assemblage responses to impoundment in two catchments classified as having intermittent and perennial-flashy natural hydrologic regimes. We observed significant shifts in fish assemblage structure at both sites after stream impoundment. The historically intermittent stream shifted to a stable perennial flow regime. Changes in fish assemblage structure covaried with changes in five different components of the flow regime; most species that increased in abundance require fluvial habitats and likely benefited from increased flows during historically low flow seasons. Shifts in fish assemblage structure were also observed in the perennial stream, despite minimal flow alteration after impoundment; however, most species shifts were associated with lentic environments, and were more likely related to proximity of reservoirs in the drainage system rather than changes in stream flow. Findings from this study confirm that downstream fish assemblage response to river impoundment can be associated with high levels of hydrologic alteration, but other factors including expansion of lentic species into lotic environments also influence shifts in assemblage structure.

Effects of Small Dams on Sunfish Assemblages in North Carolina Piedmont and Coastal Plain Streams

AbstractOver the past century dams have played a major role in restructuring North American stream communities. Effects of large dams on fish assemblages are well studied; however, effects of small dams are relatively unstudied. Sunfishes (family Centrarchidae) include many meso‐ and apex predators that are key components of North American lotic and lentic ecosystems. Additionally, centrarchids are widely introduced into impoundments well beyond their native ranges. Here, we examine sunfish assemblages at 75 sites associated with small dams in the Neuse, Tar, and Roanoke drainages in North Carolina. We predicted that streams with intact dams would have more introduced centrarchids than streams with breached or relict dams in response to dam‐induced shifts in assemblage structure. Contrary to our predictions, streams with breached dams had significantly higher numbers of introduced centrarchids, but total and native centrarchid richness were not significantly different from streams with intact dams. Streams with relict dams had significantly lower total and native centrarchid richness; exotic centrarchids did not differ between streams with intact and relict dams. Abundance of the most frequently encountered native taxon (Redbreast Sunfish Lepomis auritus) did not differ across dam types, and the abundance of the most frequently encountered exotic taxon (Bluegill L. macrochirus) was only significantly different (lower) in streams with relict dams. These data suggest that low‐head–small dams have unanticipated and potentially long‐lasting effects on stream fish communities. Moreover, they suggest a need to (1) reevaluate current views of breached dams as benign structures, and (2) develop a more holistic approach to prioritizing dams for removal.

New Approaches Indicate Constant Viral Diversity despite Shifts in Assemblage Structure in an Australian Hypersaline Lake

It is widely stated that viruses represent the most significant source of biodiversity on Earth, yet characterizing the diversity of viral assemblages in natural systems remains difficult. Viral diversity studies are challenging because viruses lack universally present, phylogenetically informative genes. Here, we developed an approach to estimate viral diversity using a series of functional and novel conserved genes. This approach provides direct estimates of viral assemblage diversity while retaining resolution at the level of individual viral populations in a natural system. We characterized viral assemblages in eight samples from hypersaline Lake Tyrrell (LT), Victoria, Australia, using 39,636 viral contigs. We defined viral operational taxonomic units (OTUs) in two ways. First, we used genes with three different functional predictions that were abundantly represented in the data set. Second, we clustered proteins of unknown function based on sequence similarity, and we chose genes represented by three clusters with numerous members to define OTUs. In combination, diversity metrics indicated between 412 and 735 sampled populations, and the number of populations remained relatively constant across samples. We determined the relative representation of each viral OTU in each sample and found that viral assemblage structures correlate with salinity and solution chemistry. LT viral assemblages were near-replicates from the same site sampled a few days apart but differed significantly on other spatial and temporal scales. The OTU definition approach proposed here paves the way for metagenomics-based analyses of viral assemblages using ecological models previously applied to bacteria and archaea.

Upstream effects of a reservoir on fish assemblages 45 years following impoundment

Fish assemblage structure, rarefied species richness, species diversity and evenness of assemblages upstream of a reservoir in Oklahoma, U.S.A., were compared pre and post-impoundment as well as in contemporary collections from streams above and below the reservoir. There were significant shifts in assemblage structure between historical and contemporary collections above the reservoir but not between contemporary assemblages above and below the impoundment. Indicator species analysis revealed that the sand shiner Notropis stramineus and fathead minnow Pimephales promelas have declined, whereas largemouth bass Micropterus salmoides and western mosquitofish Gambusia affinis have increased in relative abundance in assemblages upstream of the impoundment. Species richness was lower in contemporary assemblages compared with historical assemblages. Furthermore, contemporary assemblages below the dam had lower species richness, diversity and evenness compared with contemporary collections above the dam. These results highlight the spatial and temporal extent of reservoirs altering fish assemblages upstream of impoundments.
