Twistor space origins of the Newman-Penrose map

Recently, we introduced the “Newman-Penrose map”, a novel correspondence between a certain class of solutions of Einstein’s equations and self-dual solutions of the vacuum Maxwell equations, which we showed was closely related to the classical double copy. Here, we give an alternative definition of this correspondence in terms of quantities that are defined naturally on twistor space, and a shear-free null geodesic congruence on Minkowski space whose twistorial character is articulated by the Kerr theorem. The advantage of this reformulation is that it is purely geometrical in nature, being manifestly invariant under both spacetime diffeomorphisms and projective transformations on twistor space. While the original formulation of the map may be more convenient for most explicit calculations, the twistorial formulation we present here may be of greater theoretical utility.

Axially symmetric Petrov type II general space–time and closed timelike curves

We present a Petrov type II general space–time which violates causality in the sense that it allows for the formation of closed timelike curves that appear after a definite instant of time. The metric, which is axially symmetric, admits an expansion-free, twist-free and shear-free null geodesic congruence. From the general metric, we obtain two particular type II metrics. One is a vacuum solution while the other represents a Ricci flat solution with a negative cosmological constant.

3-folds CR-embedded in 5-dimensional real hyperquadrics

E. Cartan’s method of moving frames is applied to 3-dimensional manifolds M which are CR-embedded in 5-dimensional real hyperquadrics Q in order to classify M up to CR symmetries of Q given by the action of one of the Lie groups SU(3,1) or SU(2,2). In the latter case, the CR structure of M derives from a shear-free null geodesic congruence on Minkowski spacetime, and the relationship to relativity is discussed. In both cases, we compute which homogeneous CR 3-folds appear in Q.

Geometry of flat-space null geodesic congruences

In Minkowski space-time, (locally) space-filling families of null geodesics i.e., null geodesic congruences, appear in a variety different physical contexts. We here describe what appears to be the general explicit generic expression for these congruences. From each congruence one can construct a (virtually) unique form of the flat Lorentzian metric that is associated with the congruence. In addition, the “so-called” optical parameters for each congruence are calculated. The very important special cases of the shear-free congruences (twisting and non-twisting) are described in detail. These results are closely related to the asymptotically shear-free null geodesic congruences of asymptotically flat space-times and their rather surprising physical implications.

A changed perspective concerning asymptotically flat Einstein/Einstein–Maxwell space–times

Approximately 60 years ago, Herman Bondi took the major step in the study of gravitational radiation of introducing the use of null surfaces as coordinates for the study and integration of the Einstein equations. This led to the well-known Bondi mass loss theorem, the basis of the recent observation by the Ligo team of gravitational radiation. In Bondi’s approach to the integration procedure, he used special null surfaces (now referred to as Bondi null surfaces) where the null generators possessed (in general) non-vanishing asymptotic shear—the free radiation data. The use of this Bondi strategy over the years has become almost sacrosanct—being the central approach in almost all discussions of gravitational radiation issues. It led to the idea of an asymptotic symmetry—the BMS group. Eventually Bondi’s description of null infinity became elegantly formalized via Penrose’s future null infinity and associated structures. However recently an alternative picture of null infinity has been developed—now based on the similarity of the null surfaces to those of flat-space near null infinity. The new null surfaces, that are now asymptotically shear-free, are very different from the Bondi surfaces. These surfaces are as similar as possible to flat-space light cones near infinity. Totally new structures—e.g., the geometric asymptotically shear-free null geodesic congruences and even the physical classical equations of motion, now appear in this new picture. The Bondi–Sachs energy–momentum conservations laws remain but are augmented by angular momentum (orbital and spin) conservation laws. The BMS group again reappears, not as an asymptotic symmetry group, but as a transformation group acting on these new structures. An unanswered question arises: with this new point of view, have we lost the asymptotic symmetries of the BMS group?

Classical mechanics via general relativity and Maxwell’s theory: a bit of magic

In the 1950’s Herman Bondi observed that a very effective way to study gravitational radiation was to use null surfaces as part of the coordinate system for analyzing the Einstein (Einstein–Maxwell) equations. A particular class of such surfaces, (referred to as Bondi null surfaces) with their associated null tetrad, has now been the main tool for this analysis for many years; their use—until recently—has been almost ubiquitous. Several years ago we realized that there was an attractive alternative to the use of Bondi coordinates, namely to use coordinates (in the asymptotic null future space–time region) that were as close to ordinary flat-space light-cones as possible—very different from Bondi surfaces. There were initially serious impediments to this program: these new null surfaces (referred to as asymptotically shear-free surfaces, ASF) were determined by solving a non-linear differential equation (the “good-cut” equation) whose solutions were most often complex. Eventually these problems were overcome and the program was implemented. In a series of papers, using the ASF null surfaces to study the asymptotically flat Einstein (or Einstein–Maxwell) equations, a variety of surprising (strange) results were obtained. Using only the Einstein and Maxwell equations, we found a large number of the basic relations of classical mechanics. They included very detailed conservation laws, well know kinematic relations and dynamic equations and even the Abraham–Lorentz–Dirac radiation reaction force and the rocket force. As interesting as these were, they came with a serious enigma. These relations from classical mechanics had no relationship with the physical space–time. The space for the action of these relations was the parameter space of solutions of the good-cut equation—a complex space, known as H-space. The enigma—what possible relationship did these standard appearing classical relations have with physical space–time? It is the purpose of this work to establish such a relationship—objects in H-space are related to structures in physical space–time. For example, a complex world-line in H-space becomes in physical space–time an asymptotically shear-free null geodesic congruence where its twist describes its intrinsic spin and if charged, its magnetic dipole.

Light-cones, almost light-cones and almost-complex light-cones

We point out an unusual relationship among a variety of null geodesic congruences; (a) the generators of ordinary light-cones and (b) certain (related) shear-free but twisting congruences in Minkowski Space-time as well as (c) asymptotically shear-free null geodesic congruences that exist in the neighborhood of Penrose's Scri in Einstein or Einstein-Maxwell asymptotically flat-space-times. We refer to these geodesic congruences respectively as: Lignt-Cones (LCs), as Almost-Complex- Light-Cones, (ACLCs), [though they are real they resemble complex light-cones in complex Minkowski space] and finally to a family of congruences in asymptotically flat-spaces as `Almost Light-Cones', (ALC). The two essential points of resemblance among the three families are: (1) they are all either shear-free or asymptotically shear-free and (2) in each family the individual members of the family can be labeled by the points in a real or complex four-dimensional manifold. As an example, the Minkowski space LCs are labeled by the (real) coordinate value of their apex. In the case of (ACLCs) (complex coordinate values), the congruences will have non-vanishing twist whose magnitude is determined by the imaginary part of the complex coordinate values. In studies of gravitational radiation, Bondi-type of null surfaces and their associated Bondi coordinates have been almost exclusively used for calculations. Some surprising relations arise if, instead of the Bondi coordinates, one uses ALCs and their associated coordinate systems in the analysis of the Einstein-Maxwell equations near Scri. More explicitly and surprisingly, the asymptotic Bianchi Identities expressed in the coordinates of the ALCs, turn directly into many of the standard definitions and relations of classical mechanics.

Surprising structures hiding in Penrose’s future null infinity

Since the late1950s, almost all discussions of asymptotically flat (Einstein–Maxwell) space-times have taken place in the context of Penrose’s null infinity, In addition, almost all calculations have used the Bondi coordinate and tetrad systems. Beginning with a known asymptotically flat solution to the Einstein–Maxwell equations, we show first, that there are other natural coordinate systems, near (analogous to light-cones in flat-space) that are based on (asymptotically) shear-free null geodesic congruences (analogous to the flat-space case). Using these new coordinates and their associated tetrad, we define the complex dipole moment, (the mass dipole plus i times angular momentum), from the l = 1 harmonic coefficient of a component of the asymptotic Weyl tensor. Second, from this definition, from the Bianchi identities and from the Bondi–Sachs mass and linear momentum, we show that there exists a large number of results—identifications and dynamics—identical to those of classical mechanics and electrodynamics. They include, among many others, , spin, Newton’s second law with the rocket force term (v) and radiation reaction, angular momentum conservation and others. All these relations take place in the rather mysterious H-space rather than in space-time.This leads to the enigma: ‘why do these well known relations of classical mechanics take place in H-space?’ and ‘What is the physical meaning of H-space?’

Type N Einstein space Time Machine spacetime

We present an Einstein space axially symmetry spacetime admitting closed timelike curves (CTCs) which appear after a certain instant of time, i.e., a time machine spacetime. The spacetime is a four-dimensional generalization of flat Misner space in curved spacetime, free-from curvature divergences and belongs to type N in the Petrov classification. The spacetime admits a non-expanding, non-twisting, and shear-free null geodesic congruence.

Maxwell, Yang–Mills, Weyl and eikonal fields defined by any null shear-free congruence

We show that (specifically scaled) equations of shear-free null geodesic congruences on the Minkowski space-time possess intrinsic self-dual, restricted gauge and algebraic structures. The complex eikonal, Weyl 2-spinor, [Formula: see text] Yang–Mills and complex Maxwell fields, the latter produced by integer-valued electric charges (“elementary” for the Kerr-like congruences), can all be explicitly associated with any shear-free null geodesic congruence. Using twistor variables, we derive the general solution of the equations of the shear-free null geodesic congruence (as a modification of the Kerr theorem) and analyze the corresponding “particle-like” field distributions, with bounded singularities of the associated physical fields. These can be obtained in a straightforward algebraic way and exhibit nontrivial collective dynamics simulating physical interactions.

Exact solutions to force-free electrodynamics in black hole backgrounds

A shared property of several of the known exact solutions to the equations of force-free electrodynamics is that their charge-current four-vector is null. We examine the general properties of null-current solutions and then focus on the principal congruences of the Kerr black hole spacetime. We obtain a large class of exact solutions, which are in general time-dependent and non-axisymmetric. These solutions include waves that, surprisingly, propagate without scattering on the curvature of the black hole’s background. They may be understood as generalizations to Robinson’s solutions to vacuum electrodynamics associated with a shear-free congruence of null geodesics. When stationary and axisymmetric, our solutions reduce to those of Menon and Dermer, the only previously known solutions in Kerr. In Kerr, all of our solutions have null electromagnetic fields ( and E2 = B2). However, in Schwarzschild or flat spacetime there is freedom to add a magnetic monopole field, making the solutions magnetically dominated (B2 > E2). This freedom may be used to reproduce the various flat-spacetime and Schwarzschild-spacetime (split) monopole solutions available in the literature (due to Michel and later authors), and to obtain a large class of time-dependent, non-axisymmetric generalizations. These generalizations may be used to model the magnetosphere of a conducting star that rotates with arbitrary prescribed time-dependent rotation axis and speed. We thus significantly enlarge the class of known exact solutions, while organizing and unifying previously discovered solutions in terms of their null structure.

Null Geodesic Congruences, Asymptotically-Flat Spacetimes and Their Physical Interpretation.

A priori, there is nothing very special about shear-free or asymptotically shear-free null geodesic congruences. Surprisingly, however, they turn out to possess a large number of fascinating geometric properties and to be closely related, in the context of general relativity, to a variety of physically significant effects. It is the purpose of this paper to try to fully develop these issues.This work starts with a detailed exposition of the theory of shear-free and asymptotically shear-free null geodesic congruences, i.e., congruences with shear that vanishes at future conformal null infinity. A major portion of the exposition lies in the analysis of the space of regular shear-free and asymptotically shear-free null geodesic congruences. This analysis leads to the space of complex analytic curves in an auxiliary four-complex dimensional space, {mathcal H}-space. They in turn play a dominant role in the applications.The applications center around the problem of extracting interior physical properties of an asymptotically-flat spacetime directly from the asymptotic gravitational (and Maxwell) field itself, in analogy with the determination of total charge by an integral over the Maxwell field at infinity or the identification of the interior mass (and its loss) by (Bondi’s) integrals of the Weyl tensor, also at infinity.More specifically, we will see that the asymptotically shear-free congruences lead us to an asymptotic definition of the center-of-mass and its equations of motion. This includes a kinematic meaning, in terms of the center-of-mass motion, for the Bondi three-momentum. In addition, we obtain insights into intrinsic spin and, in general, angular momentum, including an angular-momentum-conservation law with well-defined flux terms. When a Maxwell field is present, the asymptotically shear-free congruences allow us to determine/define at infinity a center-of-charge world line and intrinsic magnetic dipole moment.

Optical structures, algebraically special spacetimes, and the Goldberg–Sachs theorem in five dimensions

Optical (or Robinson) structures are one generalization of four-dimensional shearfree congruences of null geodesics to higher dimensions. They are Lorentzian analogues of complex and CR structures. In this context, we extend the Goldberg–Sachs theorem to five dimensions. To be precise, we find a new algebraic condition on the Weyl tensor, which generalizes the Petrov type II condition, in the sense that it ensures the existence of such congruences on a five-dimensional spacetime, vacuum or under weaker assumptions on the Ricci tensor. This results in a significant simplification of the field equations. We discuss possible degenerate cases, including a five-dimensional generalization of the Petrov type D condition. We also show that the vacuum black ring solution is endowed with optical structures, yet fails to be algebraically special with respect to them. We finally explain the generalization of these ideas to higher dimensions, which has been checked in six and seven dimensions.

Light cones in relativity: Real, complex, and virtual, with applications

We study geometric structures associated with shear-free null geodesic congruences in Minkowski space-time and asymptotically shear-free null geodesic congruences in asymptotically flat space-times. We show how in both the flat and asymptotically flat settings, complexified future null infinity ${\mathfrak{I}}_{\mathbb{C}}^{+}$ acts as a ``holographic screen,'' interpolating between two dual descriptions of the null geodesic congruence. One description constructs a complex null geodesic congruence in a complex space-time whose source is a complex worldline, a virtual source as viewed from the holographic screen. This complex null geodesic congruence intersects the real asymptotic boundary when its source lies on a particular open-string type structure in the complex space-time. The other description constructs a real, twisting, shear-free or asymptotically shear-free null geodesic congruence in the real space-time, whose source (at least in Minkowski space) is in general a closed-string structure: the caustic set of the congruence. Finally we show that virtually all of the interior space-time physical quantities that are identified at null infinity ${\mathfrak{I}}^{+}$ (center of mass, spin, angular momentum, linear momentum, and force) are given kinematic meaning and dynamical descriptions in terms of the complex worldline.

Electromagnetic fields in Kerr-Schild space-times

Making use of twistor structures and the Kerr theorem for shear-free null geodesic congruences, an infinite family of electromagnetic fields satisfying the homogeneous Maxwell equations in flat Minkowski and the associated curved Kerr-Schild backgrounds is obtained for any such congruence in a purely algebraic way. Simple examples of invariant axisymmetric Maxwell fields are presented.

The real meaning of complex Minkowski-space world-lines

In connection with the study of shear-free null geodesics in Minkowski space, we investigate the real geometric effects in real Minkowski space that are induced by and associated with complex world-lines in complex Minkowski space. It was already known, in a formal manner, that complex analytic curves in complex Minkowski space induce shear-free null geodesic congruences. Here we look at the direct geometric connections of the complex line and the real structures. Among other items, we show, in particular, how a complex world-line projects into the real Minkowski space in the form of a real shear-free null geodesic congruence.

Vacuum non-expanding horizons and shear-free null geodesic congruences

We investigate the geometry of a particular class of null surfaces in spacetime called vacuum non-expanding horizons (NEHs). Using the spin-coefficient equation, we provide a complete description of the horizon geometry, as well as fixing a canonical choice of null tetrad and coordinates on a NEH. By looking for particular classes of null geodesic congruences which live exterior to NEHs but have the special property that their shear vanishes at the intersection with the horizon, a good cut formalism for NEHs is developed which closely mirrors asymptotic theory. In particular, we show that such null geodesic congruences are generated by arbitrary choice of a complex worldline in a complex four-dimensional space, each such choice induces a CR structure on the horizon, and a particular worldline (and hence CR structure) may be chosen by transforming to a privileged tetrad frame.

Asymptotically stationary and static spacetimes and shear free null geodesic congruences

In classical electromagnetic theory, one formally defines the complex dipole moment (the electric plus ‘i’ magnetic dipole) and then computes (and defines) the complex center of charge by transforming to a complex frame where the complex dipole moment vanishes. Analogously in asymptotically flat spacetimes, it has been shown that one can determine the complex center of mass by transforming the complex gravitational dipole (mass dipole plus ‘i’ angular momentum) (via an asymptotic tetrad transformation) to a frame where the complex dipole vanishes.We apply this procedure to such spacetimes which are asymptotically stationary or static, and observe that the calculations can be performed exactly, without any use of the approximation schemes which must be employed in general. In particular, we are able to exactly calculate complex center of mass and charge world-lines for such spacetimes, and—as a special case—when these two complex world-lines coincide, we recover the Dirac value of the gyromagnetic ratio.

On extracting physical content from asymptotically flat spacetime metrics

A major issue in general relativity, from its earliest days to the present, is how to extract physical information from any solution or class of solutions to the Einstein equations. Though certain information can be obtained for arbitrary solutions, e.g., via geodesic deviation, in general, because of the coordinate freedom, it is often hard or impossible to do. Most of the time information is found from special conditions, e.g. degenerate principle null vectors, weak fields close to Minkowski space (using coordinates close to Minkowski coordinates), or from solutions that have symmetries or approximate symmetries. In the present work, we will be concerned with asymptotically flat spacetimes where the approximate symmetry is the Bondi–Metzner–Sachs group. For these spaces the Bondi 4-momentum vector and its evolution, found from the Weyl tensor at infinity, describes the total energy–momentum of the interior source and the energy–momentum radiated. By generalizing the structures (shear-free null geodesic congruences) associated with the algebraically special metrics to asymptotically shear-free null geodesic congruences, which are available in all asymptotically flat spacetimes, we give kinematic meaning to the Bondi 4-momentum. In other words, we describe the Bondi vector and its evolution in terms of a center of mass position vector, its velocity and a spin vector, all having clear geometric meaning. Among other items, from dynamic arguments, we define a unique (at our level of approximation) total angular momentum and extract its evolution equation in the form of a conservation law with an angular momentum flux.
