Vibrations of skew cylindrical shells made of FG-GPLRCs under rapid surface heating

An analysis is performed in this research to examine the thermally induced vibrations in skew cylindrical shells. It is assumed that shell is made from a composite laminated material where each layer is reinforced with graphene platelets (GPLs). The amount of GPLs in the layers may be different which results in a piecewise functionally graded media. The one-dimensional transient heat conduction equation is established through the thickness of the shell. Heat conduction equation is solved using the finite difference method for each layer and continuity of temperature and heat flux is applied between the layers. Crank Nicolson algorithm is implemented to obtain the temperature profile at each time step and after that thermally induced force and moment are evaluated. The kinematics of the shell are estimated following the first order shear deformation shell theory. Also it should be noted that an oblique coordinates system in addition to orthogonal system is defined which make it easier to apply the boundary conditions. The definition of strain and kinetic energies are constructed and Following the Ritz method whose shape functions are estimated by Chebyshev polynomials, energies are provided in discrete form of the governing equations. Results of this study are provided to explore the effects of thermal and mechanical boundary conditions, geometry of the shell, weight fraction and distribution patterns of GPLs. It is highlighted that thermally induced vibrations indeed exist especially in thin class of shells.

Nonlocal strain gradient-based dynamic stability of functionally graded piezoelectric nanoshells considering thermo-electro-mechanical coupling effects

In this paper, a nonclassical shell model is utilized to investigate the dynamic stability of functionally graded piezoelectric (FGP) nanoshells considering the thermo-electro-mechanical coupling effects. Also, the FGP nanoshells on elastic foundations are subjected to periodic axial loading. The theoretical formulations are derived by implementing the first-order shear deformation (FSD) shell theory into the nonlocal strain gradient theory (NSGT). Hamilton’s principle is utilized to obtain the equations of motion and related boundary conditions of the present nanoshell model. Moreover, the Mathieu-Hill equations determining the instability regions are presented and analyzed based on Bolotin’s method. Results demonstrate that the external electric voltage, the elastic foundations, the temperature rise, the static load factor, the power-law index and the small-scale parameters have significant influences on the dynamic stability responses of FGP nanoshells.

On the free and forced vibrations of porous GPL reinforced composite conical panels using a Legendre-Ritz method

An analysis is conducted in the present investigation to study the free and forced vibration characteristics of composite laminated conical panels. It is assumed that composite panel is reinforced with graphene platelets (GPLs) where the amount of GPLs may be different between the layers which results in a piecewise functionally graded media. In addition, the effect of uniform and non-uniform porosities is also included into the formulation. The elasticity modulus of the media is estimated following the Halpin-Tsai rule while the simple rule of mixtures approach is applied to obtain the mass density and Poisson's ratio on the panel. With the aid of the first order shear deformation theory of shells and Donnell kinematics, definition of strain, kinetic and potential energy of applied loads is given. After that with the general idea of Ritz method suitable for arbitrary types of boundary conditions and Legendre polynomials as the basic functions, the energies are discreted which results in the general form of the equations of motion. While standard eigenvalue solution is applied to obtain the natural frequencies, a Newmark time marching method is implemented to obtain the temporal evolution of displacement of the panel. Results of this study are well-compared with the available data in the open literature and after that novel results on the present study are provided in the form of figures and tables. It is highlighted that type of porosity and graded pattern of GPLs are both important on the frequencies and dynamic deflection of the panel.

Free vibration behaviour of composite laminated skew cylindrical shells reinforced with graphene platelets

Current Investigation deals with the free vibration response of composite laminated shells which are reinforced with graphene platelet. Shell is in the form of skew cylinder where rectangular and skew plates and cylindrical shell are considered as especial cases. Each layer of the shell may be enriched with different amount of graphene platelets which results in a functionally graded pattern of reinforcements. The basic governing equations of the shell are obtained by means of the first order shear deformation shell theory. To implement the boundary conditions, it is more preferred to use an oblique coordinate system. Consequently, definition of strains and stresses are provided in an oblique coordinate system. After that, total kinetic and strain energies of the shell are established. Following the idea of Ritz method where the basic shape functions are Chebyshev polynomials, the motion equations of the shell associated to free vibrations are established. Results of this research are compared with the available data in the open literature and after that novel numerical results from the present study are provided to explore the effects of skew angle, opening angle, shallowness, side to thickness ratio, boundary conditions, graphene platelet weight fraction and profile. It is shown that all of these factors are important for the free vibration response of such structure.

On the wave propagation characteristics of functionally graded porous shells

This paper concentrates on the wave propagation characteristics of functionally graded (FG) porous shells. The transversal shear deformation of the shell is taken into consideration by employing a simple higher-ordered shear deformation shell theory. The equations of motion are derived for the proposed model based on Hamilton’s principle. An eigenvalue problem that relates the wave propagation elements is formulated and solved to present the various dispersion relations of FG cylindrical and spherical shells. The effects of porosities, shells’ geometrical parameters, FG material exponent, and wavenumbers on the principal wave propagation frequency and the associated phase velocity are investigated in detail.

Dynamic characteristics of novel damping sandwich composite open cylindrical shell: From theory to simulation

Based on the first-order shear deformation shell theory, the free vibration model of Multilayer Damping Sandwich Composite Open Cylindrical Shell (MDSCOCS) under different lay-up angles is established. The Navier double series and Rayleigh-Ritz method are used to solve the free vibration equation under four sided simply supported boundary conditions. The theoretical solutions are compared with the existing literature and finite element simulation results respectively to verify the validity of theoretical calculation model. The influences of the thickness, position, shell opening angle, composite lay-up angle and other factors on the natural frequency and loss factor of the structure under different number of core layers are investigated in detail. The analysis shows that the damping loss factor of the composite structure is greatly improved by the addition of multilayer damping sandwich, and the dynamic performance of the composite structure is optimized, compared with that of single-layer damping sandwich composite structure. It provides a theoretical basis for the design of multilayer damping sandwich composite open cylindrical shell.

Nonlinear vibration and dynamic buckling responses of stiffened functionally graded graphene‐reinforced cylindrical, parabolic, and sinusoid panels using the higher‐order shear deformation theory

AbstractThe nonlinear vibration and dynamic responses of functionally graded graphene‐reinforced composite (FG‐GRC) laminated cylindrical, parabolic, and sinusoid panels stiffened by FG‐GRC stiffeners in the uniformly distributed temperature variation are presented in this paper. An improved smeared stiffener technique is used to model the added stiffnesses of stiffeners to the total stiffnesses of panels. The higher‐order shear deformation shell theory (HSDT) with the geometrical nonlinearities of von Kármán is applied to establish the governing formulations. The stress function form is estimated using the approximated technique for complex curvature panels. Lagrange function and Euler‐Lagrange equations are applied, and the Rayleigh dissipation function is taken into account to obtain the nonlinear equation of motion. Numerical examples are investigated using the Runge‐Kutta method to obtain the dynamic responses of panels, and the critical dynamic buckling loads of panels are considered using the Budiansky‐Roth criterion. Some significant remarks on the nonlinear vibration and dynamic buckling responses of three types of stiffened panels can be recognized from the numerical examples.

Free-damped vibration analysis of viscoelastic foam-filled FGM anisogrid lattice cylindrical shells

Our aim with this paper is to model and investigate the vibration and damping of a new hybrid composite shell. The considered composite cylindrical shell includes an FGM anisogrid lattice shell perfectly filled with viscoelastic foams. The modeling of the lattice part composed of spiral and hoop ribs is accomplished according to a global continuous standard based on orthotropic deep shells. The distribution pattern of the metal and ceramic constituents along the lattice ribs is specified by a power law. The homogenizations between ceramic and metal phases within the ribs, as well as between the FGM lattice structure and foam, are governed by the rule of mixtures. Based on the transferred Kelvin–Voigt viscoelastic scheme, the dynamic moduli of the foam portion are acquired. Because viscoelastic foam is a soft material, the higher-order shear deformation shell theory is used to estimate the system's displacement components. After emanating the dynamic equations by Hamilton's principle, the Chebyshev collocation-based semi-numerical method is implemented to detect the system's frequencies and loss factors. The comprehensive results show the role of each composite characteristic in the vibration and damping behavior of the defined structure.

A new analytical approach to the nonlinear buckling and postbuckling behavior of functionally graded graphene reinforced composite laminated cylindrical, parabolic, and half‐sinusoid shallow imperfect panels

AbstractThis paper presents and analyzes the nonlinear buckling responses of three types of shallow imperfect panels (cylindrical panel, parabolic panel, and half‐sinusoid panel) made from functionally graded graphene reinforced composite (FG‐GRC) on nonlinear elastic foundations subjected to axial compressive load in thermal environments. The nonlinear governing equations are formulated on Reddy's higher‐order shear deformation shell theory (HSDST) and take into account von Karman‐type nonlinearity. A new approximation technique to determine the stress function in average sense is developed and Galerkin's method is used to obtain the algebraically nonlinear equation system. Then, the simple calculation process can be used to solve the obtained equation systems, and the formulations to calculate the critical buckling loads and postbuckling load‐deflection curves are expressed in explicit form. The results can be flexibly applied to FG‐GRC panels with different curvatures in engineering designs. The effects of panel types, geometrical parameters, temperature increase, initial imperfection, and nonlinear elastic foundations on the critical buckling loads and postbuckling curves of cylindrical, parabolic, and half‐sinusoid FG‐GRC panels are discussed in numerical results. Numerical results also show a small disadvantage in the load‐carrying capacity of cylindrical panels compared to parabolic panels and half‐sinusoid shallow panels.Highlights Postbuckling of cylindrical, parabolic, and half‐sinusoid panels are studied. The panels are made of functionally graded graphene reinforced composite. Reddy's higher‐order shear deformation shell theory is applied. A new approximation technique to determine the stress function is developed. Critical buckling loads and postbuckling expressions are explicitly obtained.

Elasticity and stability of corrugated conical shells with diverse orthotropy

Curved thin-walled structures have attracted significant attention within engineering communities thanks to their remarkable properties, including high load-bearing capacity, tailorable directional stiffness, adaptability, and lightweight characteristics. The geometric intricacies of these structures not only influence their mechanical behavior but also provide a vast design space for exploring new frontiers in structural development. This study investigated a unique form of curved thin-walled structure, namely the corrugated annular conical shell, which exhibits diverse degrees of cylindrical orthotropy across various corrugation patterns. An analytical model was formulated based on the minimum total potential energy principle and first-order shear deformable shell theory to predict the non-monotonous force-deflection relationships and non-uniform stress distributions in corrugated conical shells when axially loaded under compression. Within this novel framework, the local undulation shape, corrugation pitch, and amplitude emerged as influential determinants of the responses of corrugated shells, intrinsically intertwined with the polar and shear orthotropy ratios. The accuracy of our analytical model was verified by comparing its results to those obtained using the finite element method and experimental measurements. A machine learning method was employed to classify the stability behaviors of corrugated annular conical shells and derive comprehensive design maps for the first time. Corrugated annular conical shells hold enticing potential for applications as adaptive spring units or building blocks for more sophisticated architectural metamaterials.

Low-velocity impact resistance of all composite cylindrical shell panels with a foam filled honeycomb core: Theoretical and experimental investigation

The low-velocity impact resistance of all composite cylindrical shell panels (CCSPs) with a foam filled honeycomb core (FFCHC) is studied experimentally and theoretically. Initially, a dynamical model of the FFCHC-CCSPs is proposed, with the equivalent material properties of the core being determined by combining the Hamilton equivalence theory and the Gibson theory. By using the virtual work principle and quasi-static method, together with the von Karman's theory and the high order shear deformation shell theory, the constitutive relationship related to each damage case is derived. Also, by considering the influence of collapse of the FFCHC, the failure criteria and damage modes are modified. The impact displacement, load and impact energy absorption are solved by using the elastoplastic contact principle and energy principle. Several numerical results from the literature are employed for preliminary validation of the model. Furthermore, the FFCHC-CCSP specimens with and without polyurethane foam are fabricated and the detailed measurements associated with different impact energies are performed to provide a solid validation of the present model as well as to evaluate the structural impact resistance. Finally, the influences of the thickness of FFCHC, wall thickness and side length of honeycomb cell and density of foam on the impact resistance of the FFCHC-CCSP structures are discussed, with some useful conclusions being refined for better impact suppression design and manufacture of such advanced shells.

Free Vibration Analyses of Stiffened Functionally Graded Graphene-Reinforced Composite Multilayer Cylindrical Panel

In this paper, the free vibration response of a stiffened functionally graded graphene nanoplatelet (GPL)-reinforced composite multilayer cylindrical shell panel is studied for the first time. The shell is stiffened by both stringers and rings. Additionally, the effect of reinforcing the shell panel, ring and stinger with GPLs is independently studied. Halpin–Tsai relations are employed to evaluate the mechanical properties of the shell panel, rings and stringers. The first-order shear deformation shell theory, accompanied by the Lekhnitsky smeared stiffener model, using the numerical finite element method and Hamilton principle, is employed to develop the governing motion equations of the shell panel. Four different types of GPL patterns, including FG-A, FG-X, FG-O and UD, are assumed across the thickness of the shell panel, rings and stringers. The effects of different factors, including various weight fractions and patterns of GPLs nanofillers, the geometry of the shell panel and stiffeners and two displacement boundary conditions, on the natural frequencies of the shell panel, have been studied.

On the Static Instability of FG-GNP-Reinforced Composite Cylindrical Shells Under Thermo-Mechanical Loading

The nonlinear buckling response of laminated composite cylindrical shells reinforced with graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) is studied in this paper. The functionally graded (FG) shell reinforced by GNPs is analytically studied under external pressure and uniform temperature rise loadings. It is also assumed that the GNP-reinforced laminated composite shell is in contact with an elastic foundation. Various types of profiles are employed for the GNP distribution patterns in the shell thickness including 10 nanocomposite layers. The nonlinear strain-displacement relations of the shallow cylindrical panel are established utilizing the third-order shear deformation shell theory. Governing equilibrium equations of the laminated GNP-reinforced composite shell are formulated employing the principle of virtual displacement. The coupled system of nonlinear differential equations is solved analytically for the hinged–hinged and fixed–fixed boundaries of the shell using a perturbation-based technique. Correctness of presented formulations and obtained solutions is proved by comparisons with results from previous studies for an isotropic cylindrical shell. Novel numerical results reveal that the material properties, geometrical characteristics and load parameters significantly affect on the buckling behavior of laminated composite cylindrical shells.

Simple first-order shear deformation theory for free vibration of FGP-GPLRC spherical shell segments

This study presents a free vibration analysis of spherical shell segments using simple first-order shear deformation shell theory (S-FSDT) for the first time. The shell structure is made of functionally graded porous graphene platelet reinforced composite (FGP-GPLRC) – one kind of porous material strengthened by graphene platelets (GPLs). Effective material properties of the FGP-GPLRC are determined by the modified Halpin-Tsai micromechanical model and the mixture rule. Four types of porosity distributions and GPL dispersions are considered fully in this study. The governing equations of the shell are derived based on the S-FSDT and classical shell theory, then solved by the well-known Rayleigh-Ritz method and the artificial spring technique. The results show that the S-FSDT can capture well the behaviors of the spherical shell segments. Besides, the best profile of novel FGP-GPLRC is not fixed; the physical parameters, geometric parameters, and material characteristics of the shells need to be investigated fully.

Critical velocities of a two-layer composite tube incorporating the effects of transverse shear, rotary inertia and material anisotropy

Critical velocities of a two-layer composite tube subjected to a uniform internal pressure moving at a constant velocity are analytically derived by using a first-order shear deformation shell theory incorporating the transverse shear, rotary inertia and material anisotropy. The composite tube consists of two perfectly bonded axisymmetric circular cylindrical layers of dissimilar materials, which can be orthotropic, transversely isotropic, cubic or isotropic. Closed-form expressions for four critical velocities are first derived for the general case by including the effects of transverse shear, rotary inertia, material orthotropy and radial stress. The formulas for composite tubes without the transverse shear, rotary inertia or radial stress effect and with simpler anisotropy are then obtained as special cases. In addition, it is shown that the model for a single-layer, homogeneous tube is included in the current model as a special case. To illustrate the newly derived closed-form formulas, a composite tube with an isotropic inner layer and an orthotropic outer layer is analyzed as an example. The numerical values of the lowest critical velocity of the two-layer composite tube predicted by the new formulas compare well with existing data.

Nonlinear continuum thermo-mechanics of the composite thick panel used in concrete ceilings via general expression of the polynomial series theory

Proper concrete vibration is vital to the final quality and durability of concrete structures. There is a lack of objective methods to assess conformance to the requirements of vibration behavior of concrete systems used in various engineering structures. So, in the current work for the first time, nonlinear vibrations of a composite thick panel made of concrete materials are presented. In the current work, the GPLs are used to reinforce the thick concrete panel in the length direction. In the current work, according to the higher-order shear deformation shell theory the effects of the von Kármán strain-displacement kinematic nonlinearity are presented in the constitutive laws of the shell. The nonlinear governing equations for various nonlinear boundary edges are solved via discretization of equations on the space domain, derivation of Duffing-type equations, and Hadamard and Kronecker Products. The results are validated by comparing the current results with deep neural networks (DNN) and open-source results in the literature. For DNN, it is introduced a supervised neural network based on physical information to predict the vibrational behavior of the current system. In this context, data-driven solutions and data-driven discovery are presented to solve the problem of determining nonlinear frequency. Consequently, new results are investigated to show the effects of the Pasternak modulus, Winkler modulus, and the GPLs’ weight fraction on the nonlinear vibrations of concrete panels.

Stability analysis of hybrid laminated cylindrical shells reinforced with shape memory fibers

Laminated composite structures are widely used in various industries. Body and cape of high-speed flight vehicles are exposed to aerodynamic heating so that causes thermal buckling and dynamic instability. Shape memory alloys (SMAs) have extraordinary mechanical and physical properties which made them suitable for application in laminated structures. In this paper, stability analysis of hybrid laminated cylindrical shells reinforced with SMA fibers is investigated. Utilizing the principle of virtual displacement, governing equations and associated boundary conditions are determined based on the first-order shear deformation theory of shells considering Von- Kármán form of geometrical non-linearity and Love's first approximation. Material properties of SMA fibers and composite vary due to temperature. Variation of thermo-mechanical properties for SMA fibers due to uniform change of temperature are determined through the one-dimensional form of Brinson's constitutive law. Also, different types of loading conditions consist of axial load, pure lateral pressure and hydrostatic pressure are considered. Eventually, the effect of material properties, boundary supports and temperature on the critical buckling axial load, pure lateral pressure and hydrostatic pressure of the laminated cylindrical shells are studied. Investigations indicate that volume fraction and pre-strain of SMA fibers have significant effect on the stability of the laminated cylindrical shells.

Free Vibration Analysis of Functionally Graded Porous Cylindrical Panels Reinforced with Graphene Platelets.

The free vibration of functionally graded porous cylindrical shell panels reinforced with graphene platelets (GPLs) was numerically investigated. The free vibration problem was formulated using the first-order shear deformation shell theory in the framework of the 2-D natural element method (NEM). The effective material properties of the GPL-reinforced shell panel were evaluated by employing the Halpin-Tsai model and the rule of mixtures and were modified by considering the porosity distribution. The cylindrical shell surface was transformed into the 2-D planar NEM grid to avoid complex computation, and the concept of the MITC3+shell element was employed to suppress shear locking. The numerical method was validated through benchmark experiments, and the free vibration characteristics of FG-GPLRC porous cylindrical shell panels were investigated. The numerical results are presented for four GPL distribution patterns (FG-U, FG-X, FG-O, and FG-Λ) and three porosity distributions (center- and outer-biased and uniform). The effects of GPL weight, porosity amount, length-thickness and length-radius ratios, and the aspect ratio of the shell panel and boundary condition on the free vibration characteristics are discussed in detail. It is found from the numerical results that the proposed numerical method accurately predicts the natural frequencies of FG-GPLRC porous cylindrical shell panels. Moreover, the free vibration of FG-GPLRC porous cylindrical shell panels is significantly influenced by the distribution pattern as well as the amount of GPLs and the porosity.

Free Vibration Responses of Functionally Graded CNT-Reinforced Composite Conical Shell Panels.

Functionally graded CNT (carbon nanotube)-reinforced composites (FG-CNTRCs) are intensively studied because the mechanical behaviors of conventional composites can be dramatically improved. Only a small amount of CNTs are appropriately distributed through the thickness. However, the studies on conical shell panels have been poorly reported when compared with beams, plates and cylindrical shells, even though more parameters are associated with the mechanical behaviors of conical shell panels. In this context, this study intends to profoundly investigate the free vibration of FG-CNTRC conical shell panels by developing an effective and reliable 2-D (two-dimensional) numerical method. The displacement field is expressed using the first-order shear deformation shell theory, and it is approximated by the 2-D planar natural element method (NEM). The conical shell surface is transformed into the 2-D planar NEM grid, and the approach for MITC3+shell element is employed to suppress the shear locking. The developed numerical method is validated through the benchmark experiments, and the free vibration responses of FG-CNTRC conical shell panels are investigated with respect to all the associated parameters. It is found from the numerical results that the free vibration of FG-CNTRC conical shell panels is significantly influenced by the volume fraction and distribution pattern of CNTs, the geometry parameters of the conical shell, and the boundary condition.

Investigating Electromechanical Buckling Response of FG-GPL-Reinforced Piezoelectric Doubly Curved Shallow Shells Embedded in an Elastic Substrate.

This work reports the investigations of the electric potential impacts on the mechanical buckling of the piezoelectric nanocomposite doubly curved shallow shells reinforced by functionally gradient graphene platelets (FGGPLs). A four-variable shear deformation shell theory is utilized to describe the components of displacement. The present nanocomposite shells are presumed to be rested on an elastic foundation and subject to electric potential and in-plane compressive loads. These shells are composed of several bonded layers. Each layer is composed of piezoelectric materials strengthened by uniformly distributed GPLs. The Halpin-Tsai model is employed to calculate the Young's modulus of each layer, whereas Poisson's ratio, mass density, and piezoelectric coefficients are evaluated based on the mixture rule. The graphene components are graded from one layer to another according to four different piecewise laws. The stability differential equations are deduced based on the principle of virtual work. To test the validity of this work, the current mechanical buckling load is analogized with that available in the literature. Several parametric investigations have been performed to demonstrate the effects of the shell geometry elastic foundation stiffness, GPL volume fraction, and external electric voltage on the mechanical buckling load of the GPLs/piezoelectric nanocomposite doubly curved shallow shells. It is found that the buckling load of GPLs/piezoelectric nanocomposite doubly curved shallow shells without elastic foundations is reduced by increasing the external electric voltage. Moreover, by increasing the elastic foundation stiffness, the shell strength is enhanced, leading to an increase in the critical buckling load.
