Experimental study on comprehensive detection technology of shallow gas in deep soft soil layer

This study focuses on the underground shallow gas detection project in the Lingkun Island area of the northern entrance tunnel of the Wenzhou City Light Rail S2 line. Based on geological exploration data of shallow gas, we chose the technique of controlled-release gas with static pressure as the experimental foundation, integrating various technologies such as multi-functional in-situ probing, electrical methods, and seismic waves, comprehensively researching shallow gas detection technology in the Lingkun Island area. We conducted field probing experiments to accurately obtain the physical and mechanical properties of gas-rich soil layers and further studied the possibility of determining gas-rich locations. By applying parallel electrical methods, we can accurately identify and distinguish areas of anomalous resistivity in shallow geological structures. Based on abnormal changes in acoustic impedance in strata, we used seismic wave methods, including seismic CT and seismic wave scattering technology, to accurately reveal the presence and depth of shallow gas, providing reliable basis for accurate determination of shallow gas. Finally, we summarized a comprehensive plan for underground shallow gas detection technology, covering on-site data collection, data processing, and image interpretation of results, which will provide valuable references for future shallow gas exploration in relevant areas.

Ambient noise tomography of El Hierro island (Canary Islands)

El Hierro island is one of the most active islands in the Canary Islands from a volcanological point of view. This is the reason why the imaging of the internal crustal structure is of huge importance. The geophysical exploration methods employed on El Hierro Island, such as gravimetry and seismic tomography, allowed obtaining the high-resolution characterization of the crust’s deep part. However, these methods did not yield significant information about the surface and the shallower part of the crust. To gain a deeper insight into the shallow geological structure of El Hierro island, we employed Ambient Noise Tomography to construct a 3D S-wave velocity model. Our investigation revealed the presence of seven significant seismic velocity anomalies, partly identified by previous studies. We identified two high-velocity anomalies located in the eastern and western parts of the island at a depth between 0 and 3 km below sea level (b.s.l.). We interpreted these anomalies as dense intrusive complexes of dikes, possibly linked to the Tanganasoga volcano and the formation of the Tiñor edifice. Additionally, we observed two high-velocity anomalies in the northern and southern parts of the island at a depth between 3 and 4 km b.s.l., which we related to the accumulation of solidified igneous rocks. On the other hand, a low-velocity anomaly was observed in the Golfo valley, between 0 and 0.5 km b.s.l., and we interpreted it as megalandslide deposits. This anomaly was evidenced for the first time in the present study. Finally, two low-velocity anomalies were observed in the southern part of the island at different depths, between 0–0.5 km b.s.l. and 0–2 km b.s.l. These were interpreted as fractures generated by Quaternary volcanism along the SSE Rift. Also, one of them was evidenced for the first time in this study, corresponding to the zone of the fractures produced during the Quaternary volcanism. This study has allowed us to gain a more detailed understanding of the shallow geological structure of the island. Even if most of the anomalies had been evidenced previously, we could observe the existence of two low-velocity zones in the shallow crust that have not been observed before.

Yutu-2 Radar Observations at the Chang’E-4 Landing Site: The Shallow Geological Structure and Its Dielectric Properties

China has successfully carried out five lunar exploration missions since 2007. These missions indicate that China has successfully implemented a three-step lunar exploration program of “orbiting, landing, and returning”. Among them, the Lunar Penetrating Radar (LPR) carried by the Yutu-2 rover in the Chang’E-4 (CE-4) mission is the only one still operating on the far side of the Moon. Up to now, the Yutu-2 radar has measured a large amount of scientific data, and its observations are of great significance to human cognition of the geological evolution of the lunar surface and the exploration of possible lunar in situ resources. This paper reviews the scientific results obtained by previous researchers based on the radar exploration data of Yutu-2, focusing mainly on three aspects, e.g., the geological structure of the shallow surface at the CE-4 landing site, the dielectric properties of the shallow subsurface materials and the special geological features. Finally, the prospects of Yutu-2 radar research priorities and future exploration, and the application trend of Moon-based ground-penetrating radar are given.

An Experiment of the Actual Vertical Resolution of the Sub-bottom Profiler in an Anechoic Tank

Sub-bottom profiler (SBP) is an acoustic instrument commonly used to survey underwater shallow geological structure and embedded objects whose most important performance parameter is the actual vertical resolution. This paper presented a methodology to measure and evaluate the actual vertical resolution of SBP based on an experiment in an anechoic tank, which was divided into three components: building of artificial geological model, measurement of acoustic parameters, and determination of actual vertical resolution of the acoustic profiles. First, the wedge-shaped geological model, whose thickness could be accurately controlled, was designed and built in an anechoic tank to try to directly measure the vertical resolution of SBP. Then, the acoustic pulse width of SBP was measured to calculate the theoretical general vertical resolution and extreme vertical resolution. Finally, based on the acoustic profiles obtained in the experiment, the method which was used to evaluate the actual vertical resolution by measuring the duration of reflection event was put forward. Due to comparing measurement data of different parameter settings of the SBP, the study has revealed that the SBP had the lowest resolution in the 4 kHz-500 μs setting, which was 226.5 μs, or 36.2 cm, and the highest resolution in the 15 kHz-67 μs setting, which was 72.7 μs, or 11.6 cm. The vertical resolution decreased with the increase of the pulse width. The results also showed that the actual resolution was close to the theoretical general resolution and far from the extreme resolution.

Urban geophysical exploration: case study in Chengdu International Bio-City

Abstract Understanding the shallow geological structure of urban areas is crucial for effective planning and development of underground spaces. Geophysical methods that are well-suited for site-specific investigation and have robustly anti-interference capabilities can provide important geological information for urban areas. In support of investigating the 3D geological structure of the shallow subsurface in Chengdu International Bio-City, a geophysical exploration study was conducted using three methods: the electrical resistivity tomography (ERT), micro-seismic exploration and opposing-coil transient electromagnetic method (OCTEM). Results from the study showed that the ERT method was greatly affected by local high-resistance bodies, construction sites and industrial currents, therefore leading to poor detection results that did not match well with the area’s layered structure characteristics. The micro-seismic exploration method showed good layering effects and correlation with the drilling data in the elevation range of ∼350 to 436 m, but poor layering effects and low correlation with drilling data in the elevation range of ∼235 to 350 m, with relatively slow construction efficiency. The OCTEM showed good correlation with the drilling data for shallow depths up to 200 m and good identification capabilities for gypsum and mudstone in the area. Additionally, the instrument’s anti-interference ability was suitable for complex urban conditions. Thus, OCTEM was selected for the area-based exploration with a 100 × 10 m grid, rapidly obtaining 3D resistivity information for depths up to 200 m in the study area. By integrating the 3D resistivity information with known engineering geological information, a comprehensive 3D geological model of the study area was created.

Recognition of the flysch substrate using the electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) method to assess the effectiveness of the injection process

During the construction of a section of the S-7 Lubień – Rabka-Zdrój dual expressway, located in the area of the Carpathian flysch (Carpathian Flysch Belt, South Poland), damage to the embankment was observed, as well as cracks and depressions in the new pavement. An analysis of the geological and engineering conditions in the area of the road section under construction showed the existence of a complex tectonic structure of the flysch formations, a shallow groundwater table, and numerous landslides. In order to stabilize the road substrate, it was decided to carry out injections, and the locations of these injections were initially geotechnically tested. However, due to the high variability of the geological structure, the target method employed was electrical resistivity tomography (ERT), which performed the survey in two stages. In Stage I, the geoelectrical/geochemical structure of the near-surface zone was identified, and the probable causes of road damage were indicated. This stage was completed by performing the stabilization and sealing process of the ground with an injection mixture. In Stage II, studies were carried out to evaluate the effectiveness of the injection process. The ERT method effectively identified the shallow geological structure and, in particular, delineated the zone of strong fractures in the flysch and areas associated with faults. Using the electrical resistivity tomography method, it was also possible to determine the injection mixture’s approximate penetration depth and the loosening zone’s degree of filling.

Mapping the soil thickness in the Main Ethiopian Rift using passive seismic data and HVSR, case for Northern water divided between the Ziway-Shala lakes basin and the Awash basin

A passive seismic survey wasconducted in the northern water dividebetween the Ziway-Shala Lakes Basin, Central Main Ethiopian Rift (CMER), and Awash basin. Previous geophysical studies in the same areahad mainly focused on mapping intermediate to deeper Earth geological structures, and little attention given to shallowest layer.In contrast, the study aimed to map these shallow geologic structures of soil layer undulations at this specific location of CMER. A rapid and non-invasive technique was employed, which involve recording three component measurements of ambient seismic noise data. The collected seismic noise data was processed and analyzed using the average of Horizontal to Vertical Spectral Ratio (HVSR) which helpsto determine resonance frequencies of the survey stations. After frequency estimatesweremadefor each station, corresponding depth estimates were obtained using the method of Nakamura.The point depth to the shallowest layer was determined for each siteand these depth valueswere gridded and mapped to show subsurface topographic undulations or thickness of topsoil cover.The result showed that the shallowest bedrock layer wasthickening northwards, toward the Awash basin.

A multi-geophysical approach to assess potential sinkholes in an urban area

Sinkholes caused by natural or anthropogenic factors pose as potential safety hazards in urban areas. From April to May 2019, six consecutive ground collapses occurred in Beihuan New Village (Guigang City, China) that affected the livelihoods of residents and caused substantial economic losses. The present study aimed to investigate potential sinkhole areas and determine the formation mechanism of a series of ground collapses in Beihuan New Village using a combined drilling and multi-geophysical approach. Geophysical profiles collected using electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) and ground penetrating radar (GPR) revealed shallow geological structures, potential sinkholes, and karst fracture zones. We also drilled several shallow boreholes along the geophysical survey profiles to obtain accurate hydrogeological information. To precisely identify groundwater runoff zones, cross-hole electrical resistivity tomography (CHERT) surveys of deep boreholes were conducted to locate the initial boundaries of the target anomaly areas delineated using ERT and GPR. The results demonstrated that a combination of geophysical exploration and geological profile analysis could accurately delineate potential sinkholes in urban areas. The locations of sinkholes in the study area were consistent with subsurface karst and groundwater runoff zones inferred from our survey results. Additionally, comprehensive analysis indicated that a depleted groundwater table, heavy seasonal rainfall, and overlying soil characteristics were possibly responsible for sinkhole formation. These findings can assist in prevention of ground collapses in urban areas and mitigation of the damages caused by these collapses.

Using Karhunen - Loeve filter in the processing of ground penetrating radar data (GPR)

Ground - penetrating radar (GPR), a modern geophysical method, is used to study the shallow structure below the ground, based on the principle of electromagnetic wave generation and reception in the high frequency range of 10 - 3000 MHz. The received signal could be presented in the form of images, similar to the ultrasound method in medicine, to study the shallow geological structure below the ground. In order for the GPR cross - section to accurately reflect the environment below the ground, data processing always plays a very important role, in order to eliminate horizontal noise, permanent noise, etc., which often blur or obscure objects of interest. Many signal processing methods have been studied and applied, but the improvement of processing methods has always received much attention from scientists. This paper presented the theoretical basis and how to apply the Karhunen - Loeve filter to the model and practical GPR cross - section, in order to remove the standing and horizontal noises. Experimental results on the theoretical and practical models showed that the interested signals were highlighted and some noise forms were blurred. This initial success would be a promise to develop the problem of automatic processing and identification in the GPR method of the research team.

Ground Penetrating Radar of Neotectonic Folds and Faults in South-Central Australia: Evolution of the Shallow Geophysical Structure of Fault-Propagation Folds with Increasing Strain

Using ground penetrating radar (GPR) we investigate the near surface (~0–10 m depth) geophysical structure of neotectonic fault-propagation folds and thrust faults in south-central Australia in varying stages of fold and fault growth. Variations in neotectonic fold scarp heights are interpreted to reflect variations in accumulated slip on the underlying reverse faults. Fold scarps on the Nullarbor and Roe Plains are characterized by broad, asymmetric morphologies with vertical displacements of ~5 to ~40 m distributed over 1 to 2 km widths (~0.5 to ~4 m per 100 m). Within increasing scarp height there is an increase in the frequency and spatial density of strong reflector packages in the hanging wall that are attributed to material contrasts imposed by co-seismic fracturing and associated lithological and weathering variations. No evidence for discrete faulting is found at scarp heights up to 40 m (maximum relief of 4 m per 100 m). Where the principal slip zone of a fault ruptures to the surface, scarp morphologies are characterized by steep gradients (ca. 10 m per 100 m). Discrete faulting is imaged in GPR as structural lineaments, abrupt changes in the thickness of reflector packages with variations of amplitude, and/or hyperbolic diffraction packages indicative of the disturbance of reflector packages. Geophysical imaging of subtle changes in the shallow geological structure during growth of fault-propagation folds can be conducted using GPR informing the identification of locations for invasive investigations (e.g., trenching).

Shallow geological structures building by joint waveform inversion based on curvelet decomposition

Shallow geological imaging structures often play an essential role in the field of environmental and engineering geophysics. Early arrival waveform inversion (EWI) is high-resolution method to imaging near-surface structures. We proposed a joint waveform and envelope inversion method based on curvelet transform (CJWEI) to build shallow geological structures. By taking advantage of their complementary sensitivities to near-surface structure, we can constrain both low- and high-wavenumber components of structures, as well as mitigating the cycle-skipping problem. Curvelet transform was used to decompose seismic data into different scales and provide a multi-scale inversion strategy to further reduce non-uniqueness of the inversion. With synthetic test, we demonstrate that our method can constrain the anomalies and hidden layers in the shallow structure more efficiently as well as robust in terms of noise.

Curvelet-Based Joint Waveform and Envelope Inversion of Early-Arrival Imaging Shallow Geological Structure

Abstract Near-surface imaging structures often plays a significant role in the field of environmental and engineering geophysics. Early-arrival waveform inversion (EWI) is state-of-the-art method to imaging near-surface structures due to its high resolution. However, the method faces with cycle-skipping issue which might lead to an unexpected local minimum. Envelope inversion (EI) could deal with this issue which contributes to the ultralow-frequency information extracted from the envelope but has a low resolution. We have developed a curvelet-based joint waveform and envelope inversion (CJWEI) method for inverting imaging near-surface velocity structures. By inverting two types of data, we are able to recover the low- and high-wavenumber structures and mitigate the cycle-skipping problem. Curvelet transform was used to decompose seismic data into different scales and provide a multiscale inversion strategy to further reduce non-uniqueness of waveform inversion efficiently. With synthetic test and real data application, we demonstrate that our method can constrain the anomalies and hidden layers in the shallow structure more efficiently as well as is robust in terms of noise. The proposed multiscale joint inversion offers a computational efficiency and high precision to imaging fine-scale shallow underground structures.

Day–night cycle of seismic noise HVSR and comparison with body waves andTwaves

SUMMARYWe analysed long (months) continuous recordings of ground motion at more than 30 sites in Calabria (Italy) in order to investigate the relationships among background signal amplitude, noise composition, day–night cycle and horizontal to vertical spectral ratio (HVSR). We computed the root mean square (rms), polarization and HVSR of the seismic signal. For many sites, the HVSR contains at least one well-defined peak of amplitude greater than 2 that is representative of site effects produced by the shallow geological structure and/or topography. At six of the investigated sites, we observe an important variation of the HVSR peak amplitude that is well correlated with the day–night cycle, the peak amplitude being greater during day hours, when the background signal amplitude is higher. The rectilinearity of particle motion computed from the polarization analysis is higher during day hours, thus showing a positive correlation with both signal rms and HVSR peak amplitude. For these sites we analysed also body waves of local earthquakes and T waves produced by regional earthquakes in order to compute the HVSR of signals composed predominantly by body waves. Results of body waves and T waves are more similar to the HVSR of day hour seismic noise than the HVSR of night hour seismic noise, thus suggesting that the stronger seismic noise recorded during day hour may contain a greater amount of body waves with respect to the night hour noise.

Integrated Geophysical Investigation of River Ogun Floodplain, Papalanto, Southwestern Nigeria

A geophysical investigation that involves the integration of Vertical Electrical Sounding (VES), Electrical Resistivity Imaging (ERI), and Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) methods was conducted on Papalanto, Ogun River floodplain, a location underlain by sedimentary terrain of Southwestern Nigeria. This research aimed to image the underground lithological units and delineate the shallow geologic structures in order to characterize the area for agricultural suitability throughout the dry season. VES results typically outlined three geologic layers which are topsoil, saturated loamy clay, and alluvium. From 2D inverted resistivity results, three major geologic layers, namely topsoil, saturated loamy clay, and alluvium, were outlined and are in very good agreement with the results attained through VES. The first three layers of 3D inverted resistivity sections display a great amount of variation in the distribution of resistivity at superficial depth, made up of low resistive content. From the GPR survey, three geologic layers were also outlined from the results, namely the topsoil, saturated loamy clay, and alluvium. Consequently, the study location can be said to be semi-competent to competent luxuriant farming land in consideration of the resistivity distribution of the floodplain subsurface. Therefore, VES, ERI, and GPR are very effective geophysical methods for describing and classifying the shallow subsurface in reference to the measured physical properties. Hence, they should be applied in related geophysical investigations for better insight into the geology of the subsurface. Airborne geophysical surveys of the lower Mississippi Valley demonstrate system-scale mapping of subsurface architecture

The Mississippi Alluvial Plain hosts one of the most prolific shallow aquifer systems in the United States but is experiencing chronic groundwater decline. The Reelfoot rift and New Madrid seismic zone underlie the region and represent an important and poorly understood seismic hazard. Despite its societal and economic importance, the shallow subsurface architecture has not been mapped with the spatial resolution needed for effective management. Here, we present airborne electromagnetic, magnetic, and radiometric observations, measured over more than 43,000 flight-line-kilometers, which collectively provide a system-scale snapshot of the entire region. We develop detailed maps of aquifer connectivity and shallow geologic structure, infer relationships between structure and groundwater age, and identify previously unseen paleochannels and shallow fault structures. This dataset demonstrates how regional-scale airborne geophysics can close a scale gap in Earth observation by providing observational data at suitable scales and resolutions to improve our understanding of subsurface structures.

Short-Period Surface-Wave Tomography in the Continental United States—A Resource for Research

Abstract The variation of phase and group velocity dispersion of Love and Rayleigh waves was determined for the continental United States and adjacent Canada. By processing ambient noise from the broadband channels of the Transportable Array (TA) of USArray and several Program for the Array Seismic Studies of the Continental Lithosphere experiments and using some earthquake recordings, the effort was focused on determining dispersion down to periods as short as 2 s. The relatively short distances between TA stations permitted the use of a 25 km×25 km grid for the four independent tomographic inversions (Love and Rayleigh and phase and group velocity). One reason for trying to obtain short-period dispersion was to have a data set capable of constraining upper crust velocity models for use in determining regional moment tensors. The benefit of focusing on short-period dispersion is apparent in the tomography maps—shallow geologic structures such as the Mid-Continent Rift, and the Michigan, Illinois, Anadarko, Arkoma, and Appalachian basins are imaged. In our processing, we noted that the phase velocities were more robustly determined than the group velocities. We also noted that the inability to obtain dispersion at short periods shows distinct regional patterns that may be related to the local upper crust structure.

High‐Resolution 3‐D Shear Wave Velocity Model of Northern Taiwan via Bayesian Joint Inversion of Rayleigh Wave Ellipticity and Phase Velocity With Formosa Array

AbstractThe Formosa array, with 137 broadband seismometers and ∼5 km station spacing, was deployed recently in Northern Taiwan. Here by using eight months of continuous ambient noise records, we construct the first high‐resolution three‐dimensional (3‐D) shear wave velocity model of the crust in the area. We first calculate multi‐component cross‐correlations to extract robust Rayleigh wave signals. We then determine phase velocity maps between 3 and 10 s periods using Eikonal tomography and measure Rayleigh wave ellipticity at each station location between 2 and 13 s periods. For each location, we jointly invert the two types of Rayleigh wave measurements with a Bayesian‐based inversion method for a one‐dimensional shear wave velocity model. All piecewise continuous one‐dimensional models are then used to construct the final 3‐D model. Our 3‐D model reveals upper crustal structures that correlate well with surface geological features. Near the surface, the model delineates the low‐velocity Taipei and Ilan Basins from the adjacent fast‐velocity mountainous areas, with basin geometries consistent with the results of previous geophysical exploration and geological studies. At a greater depth, low velocity anomalies are observed associated with the Linkou Tableland, Tatun Volcano Group, and a possible dyke intrusion beneath the Southern Ilan Basin. The model also provides new geometrical constraints on the major active fault systems in the area, which are important to understand the basin formation, orogeny dynamics, and regional seismic hazard. The new 3‐D shear wave velocity model allows a comprehensive investigation of shallow geologic structures in the Northern Taiwan.

Combining of MASW and GPR Imaging and Hydrogeological Surveys for the Groundwater Resource Evaluation in a Coastal Urban Area in Southern Spain

This paper conceptualizes and evaluates the groundwater resource in a coastal urban area hydrologically influenced by peri-urban irrigation agriculture. Adra town in southern Spain was the case study chosen to evaluate the groundwater resource contributed from the northern steep urban sector (NSUS) to the southern flat urban sector (SFUS), which belongs to the Adra River Delta Groundwater Body (ARDGB). The methodology included (1) geological and hydrogeological data compilation; (2) thirteen Multichannel Analysis of Surface Waves (MASW), and eight Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) profiles to define shallow geological structures and some hydrogeological features; (3) hydrogeological surveys for aquifer hydraulic definition; (4) conceptualization of the hydrogeological functioning; and (5) the NSUS groundwater resource evaluation. All findings were integrated to prepare a 1:5000 scale hydrogeological map and cross-sections. Ten hydrogeological formations were defined, four of them (Paleozoic weathered bedrock, Pleistocene littoral facies, Holocene colluvial, and anthropogenic filling) in the NSUS contributing to the SFUS. The NSUS groundwater discharge and recharge are, respectively, around 0.28 Mm3 year−1 and 0.31 Mm3 year−1, and the actual groundwater storage is around 0.47 Mm3. The groundwater renewability is high enough to guarantee a durable small exploitation for specific current and future urban water uses which can alleviate the pressure on the ARDGB.

Magnetic signatures of subsurface faults on the northern upper flank of Mt Etna (Italy)

A ground magnetic study was performed on the northern upper flank of Mt. Etna to provide new insights into subsurface volcano-tectonic structures. The high resolution magnetic survey was focused on the main structures of Piano delle Concazze, a large flat area dominated by the North- East crater and bounded by the rim of the Valle del Leone depression and the extremity of the North- East Rift. More than 2,500 measurements were gathered with a sampling step of about 3 m covering an area of about 0.2 km2. The total-intensity anomaly field shows the presence of intense South- North aligned maxima related to shallow geological structures affecting this area. Filtering techniques and 2.5D modeling have been applied for the determination of the magnetic source parameters. In order to distinguish the near surface structure, filters of the vertical derivatives, Butterworth high-pass and the tilt derivative were used. The 3D Euler deconvolution has been applied to estimate the depth and the structural indices of the causative sources. The calculated structural indices, that express the geometrical nature of the source, are in agreement with forward modeling. They show that the area is mainly affected by subvertical normal fault and the estimated depth of magnetic sources ranges between 10 m and 40 m. Our total field magnetic survey shows that characteristic magnetic anomalies are related to fault zones in the Piano delle Concazze that are well consistent with the local tectonics. The subsurface structures that have been detected allowed to delineate the general structural framework of the area. In particular, it was possible to clarify that these structures seem to be not deep rooted and consequently they can hardly act as preferential pathways for magma ascent.

Preliminary Study on Shallow Geological Features of Weixi Exploration Area in Beibu Gulf

The shallow geological research of Weixi exploration area in Beibu Gulf is of low degree, which is not conducive to further exploration and engineering activities in the future. In this paper, based on the well site survey data and regional research results of predecessors, the engineering geology and sequences of the shallow strata in this area are divided, and the shallow geological structure is preliminarily established. Within the depth of 40 m below the sea floor, the lithology of the strata is silty clay layer, hard clay layer, gravel sandy layer, clay layer and sandy layer from top to bottom, and the formation ages are respectively Holocene and late, middle and early Pleistocene.
