The Influence Of Father Involvement On Adolescent Sexual Self-Concept

Purpose: Self-concept is constructed through individual experiences and knowledge. Adolescents who start to become complicated about finding their identity, self-concept is also needed to help adolescents deal with the development of sexual turmoil, in this case it is called sexual self-concept. One of the factors that influences the construction of sexual self-concept is how fathers involve themselves in parenting. This research aims to determine the influence of father's involvement in parenting on adolescents' sexual self-concept. Method: This research used quantitative method with a total of 347 participants selected. They were teenagers aged 12-18 years who lived in Nganjuk Regency, East Java. Result: It showed that fathers' involvement in caring for adolescents in Nganjuk was at a medium level (91.1%) and teenagers' sexual self-concept was also at a medium level (72.6%). The significance value (Sig.) in the simple linear regression test is 0.000 < 0.05, with the t test result being -7.252 < 1.649, providing information that father involvement in parenting has a significant influence on adolescents' sexual self-concept. Conclusion: Result that show a negative direction indicated limitations in understanding and openness regarding the importance of sexual self-concept in adolescents. Many participants thought sexual self-concept as taboo to be discussed.

Predictors of genital self-image in Iranian women: a cross-sectional study.

Several factors influence women's perception of their genitalia. Understanding the elements associated with genital self‑image (GSI) can significantly contribute to enhancing women's sexual experiences. Therefore, the present study aimed to identify the predictors of GSI in Iranian women. This online cross-sectional study was conducted on 722 healthy married reproductive-aged women with records in Amol-Iran health centers during 2022. Participants were selected using a random sampling method from all the healthcare centers. Data were collected through a checklist of socio-demographic and obstetrics information, the Female Genital Self-Image Scale (FGSI), the 6-item Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI-6), the Female Sexual Distress Scale - revised (FSDS-R), and the Multidimensional Sexual Self-Concept Questionnaire (MSSCQ) for assessing sexual esteem and sexual satisfaction. The general linear model was employed to assess the impact of each independent variable (socio-demographic and obstetrics characteristics, sexual function, sexual distress, sexual esteem, and sexual satisfaction) on the dependent variable (GSI). The mean score of GSI was 21.70 ± 3.82. Based on the Pearson correlation test, there were significant correlations between GSI and sexual function, sexual esteem, sexual satisfaction, and sexual distress (r = 0.20, r = 0.43, r = 0.42, r = -0.28 respectively; p < 0.001). Using the adjusted general linear model, with the increasing scores of sexual esteem and sexual satisfaction, the GSI score also increased (β = 0.19, 95% CI: 0.10 to 0.27, β = 0.14, 95% CI: 0.06 to 0.22, respectively; p < 0.001). Additionally, age, abnormal vaginal discharge, genital feedback from partners, and satisfaction with body image were identified as other predictors of GSI. Based on the study results, it was observed that sexual esteem, sexual satisfaction, and certain socio-demographic variables served as predictors of GSI. Consequently, considering the potential impact of GSI on various aspects of women's lives, healthcare providers can enhance their counseling techniques to improve GSI by gaining an appropriate understanding of the factors that influence it.

Impact of pole dancing on mental wellbeing and sexual self-concept: Protocol for a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Despite the recognized psychological benefits of traditional dance forms, the impact of newer forms, such as pole dancing, on mental well-being and sexual self-concept remains underexplored. This protocol outlines a systematic review and meta-analysis aimed at elucidating the effects of pole dancing, a burgeoning non-pharmacological intervention, on these dimensions of mental health. This systematic review was registered in the PROSPERO. We will follow the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analysis Protocol to accomplish the systematic review protocol. This review will systematically search electronic databases, including PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Medline, and CNKI, for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) assessing the impact of pole dancing on mental well-being and sexual self-concept. Two independent evaluators will screen the literature, extract data, and evaluate study quality and bias. Data synthesis will utilize Stata 14.0 and Revman 5.4, employing random-effects models. The Grading of Recommendations, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE) system will appraise evidence reliability, with subgroup analysis exploring heterogeneity sources. Publication bias will be assessed through funnel plots and Egger's regression tests. This review aims to fill the gap in the current literature by providing a comprehensive evaluation of pole dancing's psychological effects. It is anticipated that this systematic review and meta-analysis will offer valuable insights for health policy and practice, advocating for the inclusion of pole dancing in mental health and sexual well-being interventions. Comparing sexual self-concept in women with obesity pre- and post-bariatric surgery

BackgroundObesity leads to increased disease burden, decreased life expectancy, and disrupted sexual life. One of the most effective ways of obesity treatment is bariatric surgery. This study was conducted aiming to determine and compare sexual self-concept in women with obesity pre- and post-bariatric surgery.MethodA longitudinal study comparing sexual self-concept pre and post- surgery was conducted on women with obesity referring to obesity clinics in the city of Tehran in 2020–2021. Data collection was performed using Snell’s Multidimensional Sexual Self-Concept Questionnaire (MSSCQ), which was completed online. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 16 statistical software and Fisher’s exact test, chi-square, Mann-Whitney, independent t, and logistic and linear regression tests. A p-value of less than 0.05 was considered significant.ResultsAccording to the findings, the mean (standard deviation) score of sexual self-concept was 240.26 (26.82) in the post-surgery group and 200.26 (32.24) in the pre-surgery group (P = 0.001), and the highest mean (standard deviation) score of sexual self-concept both in the pre-surgery group (13.06 [4.00]) and in the post-surgery group (15.46 [2.16]) was related to the area of sexual depression (P = 0.05). Also, with increasing educational level, the odds of bariatric surgery increased by 33%, and those who had no private bedroom had lower odds of bariatric surgery by 65%. In those who did not have other individuals living in their house and their spouse was not a smoker, the self-concept score was 52.35 and 23.11 units higher.ConclusionIn general, bariatric surgery can improve sexual self-care. Considering the issue of sexual self-concept in bariatric surgery, it is recommended to design appropriate counseling and planning before surgery according to the culture of each country.

(115) SEXUAL SELF-ESTEEM IN TWO SAMPLES OF ADOLESCENT AND YOUNG ADULT CANCER SURVIVORS: A QUALITATIVE INVESTIGATION

Abstract Introduction As rates of survival from cancer continue to increase in adolescents and young adults, long term physical and psychological impacts are likely to rise. For those diagnosed with cancer during childhood or adolescence, one such late effect may be delayed sexual development. Delayed sexual development may manifest as issues of sexual functioning (i.e., the ability to successfully complete the sexual response cycle) as well as issues of sexual self-concept (i.e., how one navigates the world as a sexual being). These issues may, in turn, impact survivors’ self-esteem. These concerns are likely to be exponentially exacerbated when survivors identify as a member of a sexual and/or gender minority (SGM) group. Objective Based on empirical research and two studies from our team, we examine variables that impact the sexual self-esteem of AYA cancer survivors, particularly those that identify as members of an SGM group. Methods In our small pilot project, we conducted cognitive interviews to assess whether a novel model, adapted from sexual health frameworks established by Woods (1995) and Evan et al. (2006), applied to AYA cancer survivors. Following analysis of these interviews, we refined our model, and received funding for a larger qualitative study (n = 30) tailored to AYA cancer survivors who identify as members of an SGM group. Results Four cisgender female cancer survivors participated in this small qualitative study, which provided preliminary validation that variables such as body image, amount of sexual education, quality of interpersonal relationships, and sexual functioning, were all tied into one’s perception of their sexual self-esteem. Several additional potential variables were identified from these interviews, including amount of sexual equity (how much participants felt that their sexual activity was balanced between them and a partner), religiosity, negative self-evaluative emotions (e.g., guilt and shame), and SGM identity, that could influence sexual self-esteem. Preliminary analyses of our SGM-focused qualitative study have revealed high levels of asexuality and mental health comorbidities that may be affecting sexual self-esteem. Recruitment and analysis for this study is ongoing. Conclusions Results from these two studies will provide some of the first empirical research on sexual self-esteem in a population for which sexual health is vastly under researched. We anticipate that this work will lay the foundation for novel measurements and interventions for these individuals. By providing a voice to those who are underrepresented in research, we hope that this research may have high-impact in informing future interventions to become more holistic and culturally-informed to allow for studies to ensure they are reflecting all identities of cancer survivors. Finally, we anticipate that this research may be of significant benefit to oncology providers and clinicians to overhaul and adapt sexual education for patients in treatment, as well as inform areas of concern and assessment for these providers and clinicians, particularly among their SGM patients and survivors. RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SEXUAL DYSFUNCTION AND SEXUAL SELF-CONCEPT IN PATIENTS WITH DIABETES MELLITUS: A SCOPING REVIEW

Background: An often-occurring complication of diabetes mellitus is sexual dysfunction, often linked to poor blood sugar control. Despite its significant impact on patients' lives, issues related to sexual desire, education, and timely detection and management of sexual problems have historically been overlooked in diabetes interventions. This neglect may affect individuals' sexual self-concept and overall well-being. The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between sexual dysfunction and sexual self-concept in diabetics. Design: This research employs a scoping review design. Data Sources: A comprehensive literature search was conducted using databases such as Web of Science, Open Alex, Crossref, Google Scholar, PubMed, Scopus, and Semantic Scholar. Articles published between January 2018 and October 2023 were included. Review Methods: The analysis followed the Arksey and O'Malley model and PRISMA guidelines. 26 quantitative articles were reviewed, including 24 cross-sectional studies and 2 observational studies, all using quantitative methodologies. Results: Sexual dysfunction is prevalent among diabetes type 1 and type 2 in both men and women, influenced by physiological factors and glycemic control. Men may experience issues like diminished libido, premature ejaculation, and difficulty achieving orgasm, while women may face reduced sexual desire, arousal difficulties, and dyspareunia. Factors contributing to sexual dysfunction include age, duration of diabetes, glycemic control, comorbidities, medication use, psychological factors, and lifestyle elements like physical activity and stress levels. Sexual dysfunction in people with diabetes has a significant impact on sexual self-concept, which includes feelings, views, and beliefs about sexual relationships. Conclusion: There hasn't been any specific research conducted on diabetic patients concerning the correlation between sexual dysfunction and sexual self-concept, highlighting the need for dedicated studies to address this association and raise awareness.

Measuring Sexual Motivation and Marital Satisfaction in Young Adult Men

Satisfaction is a crucial aspect of a marital relationship. The subjective nature of an individual's views and reactions to their marriage is a well-documented phenomenon. The potential for various risks to arise if individuals are dissatisfied with their marriage is considerable. One such risk is the potential for separation. One aspect of sexuality that can influence marital satisfaction is sexual motivation. One of the principal determinants of marital satisfaction is the individual's motive for engaging in sexual relations. The objective of this research is to ascertain the relationship between sexual motivation and marital satisfaction in young married adult men. This research employs quantitative methods. The subjects of this research were 604 participants. The sampling technique employed a purposive sampling approach, with the subjects comprising married young adult males, aged between 20 and 40 years. Marital satisfaction was gauged utilizing the Relationship Assessment Scale (RAS) instrument, while sexual motivation was quantified using the Multidimensional Sexual-Self Concept Questionnaire (MSCCQ) instrument. The results of Spearman's rho analysis indicate that the p value is .508, which is greater than .05. This indicates that there is no correlation between sexual motivation and marital satisfaction in young adult men. Further research is required to ascertain whether there are intervening variables that can explain the correlation between the two research variables

Investigating the Impact of Reproductive Coercion and Intimate Partner Violence on Psychological and Sexual Wellbeing.

Emerging research suggests that reproductive coercion and abuse (RCA), like intimate partner violence (IPV), is associated with poorer mental and sexual health outcomes, including greater symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression and poorer markers of physical and sexual health such as sexually transmitted infections, unplanned pregnancies and lowered sexual agency. Although victims/survivors of RCA report long-lasting impacts on future relationships, including fear and anxiety, little is known about impacts of RCA on anxiety and general wellbeing, nor emotional and mental components of sexual health that comprise a person's sexual self-concept. With community samples of participants in Australia, we conducted two studies to explore the impact of RCA and IPV on psychological (study 1) and sexual (study 2) health outcomes. Study 1 (n = 368) found that experiencing IPV and RCA both significantly and uniquely contributed to poorer mental health outcomes. After controlling for age and IPV, RCA significantly predicted symptoms of depression, anxiety, stress, PTSD, and reduced satisfaction with life. Study 2 (n = 329) found that IPV and RCA differentially predicted various components of sexual health. IPV predicted decreased sexual satisfaction and increased sexual anxiety, depression, and fear of sexual encounters. After controlling for age and IPV, RCA significantly and uniquely predicted lower levels of sexual assertiveness and increased sexual depression and fear of sexual encounters, but not sexual satisfaction or anxiety. We conclude that RCA is associated with significant psychological distress and a negative sexual self-concept that may impact future relationships. Screening for both IPV and RCA across settings is warranted.

Breast cancer and sexual self-concept: Comparing women with breast cancer and healthy women

This study aimed to assess and compare the dimensions of sexual self-concept (SSC) in women with (n=80) and without (n=120) breast cancer (BC). Women with BC and healthy cases in the control group were selected from the same center. The recruiting women referred for screening, and no BC was detected based on the results. The participants completed the demographic and Persian versions of the modified Multidimensional Sexual Self-Concept Questionnaires. Chi-square, t test, and Mann-Whitney tests were used to analyze the data. Women with BC reported significantly higher scores in negative dimensions of SSC, particularly in sexual anxiety and fear of sex (P&lt;0.05). In the dimension of positive self-concept, only the assertiveness score (P=0.008) was different between the two groups. In contrast, the overall score of positive self-concept did not demonstrate a significant difference between the groups. SSC in women with BC seems impaired compared with healthy women.

Social-Demographic Predictors of Sexual Self-concept in Women on the Verge of Marriage: A Cross-Sectional Study

Background: A satisfying and proper sexual relationship that meets the needs of both spouses plays a crucial role in the stability and longevity of the family. Sexual self-concept is one of the factors affecting women's sexual behavior and performance and can be changed throughout life. Objectives: This study aimed to determine the status of sexual self-concept and its socio-demographic predictors of women on the verge of marriage. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted on 130 women referring to premarital counseling centers in Tabriz, Iran. The data collection tool was the questionnaire of personal and social characteristics and Snell's Multidimensional Sexual Self-Concept Questionnaire. Pearson's correlation test, one-way analysis of variance, and multivariate linear regression test were used in data analysis with SPSS software version 24. Results: The mean (standard deviation) of the positive sexual self-concept score was 117 (0.20) from the obtainable score of 0 - 176, and the mean (standard deviation) of the negative sexual self-concept score was 16 (0.7) from the obtainable score of 4 - 38. Additionally, the mean (standard deviation) of the sexual self-concept score was 44 (0.9) from the range of the obtainable score of 0 - 72. The results of multivariate analysis with multivariate linear regression test and control of confounding variables showed that the husband’s age, education, and mother's education were the predictors of positive sexual self-concept. Moreover, age, father's education, and duration of previous acquaintance were reported as predictors of negative sexual self-concept, and age was observed as a predictor of situational sexual self-concept. Conclusions: The study's findings indicated that age, education, parents' education, and the duration of acquaintance with the future spouse could predict sexual self-concept in women approaching marriage without sexual abuse. Given that sexual self-concept evolves well before any sexual activity, policymakers can enhance women's sexual self-concept through interventions, such as psychological counseling with a focus on sexual health. This, in turn, can improve their overall well-being, ultimately supporting stable family foundations and successful childbearing in the future.

Role of Body Gaze, Interpersonal Sexual Objectification and Sensation Seeking in Sexual Self-Concept in Heterosexual Young Adults in Pakistan

Past research has shown that body gaze behavior is marked for being a central feature of sexual objectification and that it may be associated with the sexual self-concept and tendency for sensation seeking among both men and women. The purpose of the present study was to assess the role of body gaze, interpersonal sexual objectification and sensation seeking in the sexual self-concept of heterosexual young adults in Pakistan. A cross-sectional research design was used to assess the aforementioned predictive associations with a sample of 455 individuals comprising 250 males and 205 females selected through purposive sampling. Data analysis was done using Pearson product moment correlation, multiple regression using dummy coding and MANOVA. The findings showed that body gaze behavior toward the other gender significantly predicted interpersonal sexual objectification, higher levels of sexual desire and sexual anxiety along with a higher orientation toward sensation seeking. Moreover, men scored high on body gaze behavior, sexual desire, sexual anxiety and sensation seeking. These results resonate with the existing body of research on sexual objectification, sexual self-concept and sensation seeking and how cultural contexts may contribute toward the above associations.

The effect of sexual education on the postpartum women’s sexual self-confidence and self-efficacy: a theory-based intervention

IntroductionPregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period cause significant physical and psychological changes in mothers, leading to changes in their sexual self-concept and adverse effects on their sexual self-confidence and self-efficacy. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the effect of sexual education on postpartum women’s sexual self-efficacy and self-confidence.MethodThis randomized interventional study was conducted on 115 women who had given birth at least six weeks ago and attended healthcare centers. Using convenience sampling, the researchers randomly allocated the participants into two intervention and control groups through a block size of six. The intervention group received six 90-minute online training sessions based on the sexual self-concept model over one month, while the control group received routine care. To collect data, the self-efficacy and sexual confidence questionnaires by Buzwell and Rosenthal were used before the intervention, immediately after the intervention, and one month later.ResultsThe study findings demonstrated no significant differences in demographic characteristics, sexual self-confidence, and sexual self-efficacy scores between the two groups before the intervention. However, the repeated measures ANOVA results revealed a substantial increase in sexual self-confidence and self-efficacy scores over time in the intervention group immediately after participating in the training sessions and one month later.ConclusionConsidering the effect of training based on the sexual self-concept model on postpartum women, the researchers recommend using this model to improve their sexual self-efficacy and self-confidence after childbirth.Clinical trial registrationThis study is registered at the Iranian Registry Clinical Trial (IRCT20220530055025N1).

The Effectiveness of Strength-Based Intervention on Attitude Toward Marital Infidelity and Sexual Self-Concept in Women with Marital Conflict

Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a strength-based intervention on altering attitudes toward marital infidelity and enhancing sexual self-concept among women experiencing marital conflict. Methods: A randomized controlled trial design was employed with 30 women from the Mehravar Counseling Center in Tehran, divided equally into intervention and control groups. The intervention consisted of eight 75-minute sessions based on strength-based principles. Data were collected at three points using the Attitudes Towards Infidelity Scale (ATIS) and the Sexual Self-Concept Inventory (SSCI). Statistical analysis was conducted using ANOVA with repeated measurements and Bonferroni post-hoc tests, utilizing SPSS-27. Findings: The intervention group showed significant improvements in both measured outcomes. Attitudes toward marital infidelity decreased from a pre-test mean of 42.53 (SD = 5.67) to 37.82 (SD = 5.12) at follow-up. Sexual self-concept increased from a pre-test mean of 30.88 (SD = 4.45) to 35.64 (SD = 3.72) at follow-up. The ANOVA results revealed significant time effects and time x group interactions for both variables (p &lt; .001). Conclusion: The strength-based intervention was effective in significantly improving attitudes toward marital infidelity and sexual self-concept among women with marital conflicts. These findings suggest that such interventions can be beneficial in marital counseling settings, offering a promising approach for enhancing marital satisfaction and individual well-being.

Sexual anxiety mediate relationship between sexual schemas and body image with sexual function in Iranian women.

Sexual function is one of the most critical challenges in human society, especially among women. The problems associated with sexual function are significantly ambiguous in a society like Iran. This study investigated the mediating role of sexual anxiety in relationship between sexual schemas and body image with female sexual function. The research method was correlational and specifically path analysis. The statistical population included women aged 25-45 in Rasht, Iran, 2021. 365 women were selected using Cochran's formula and the convenience sampling method. The Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI), Sexual Self-Schema Scale for Women (SSSS), Body Image Scale (BIS), and Multidimensional Sexual Self-Concept Questionnaire (MSQ) were used for data collection. For data analysis, SPSS-26 and LISREL 10.2 software were used. Descriptive data analysis showed that mean and standard deviation were for further passionate-romantic schema 22.96 and 4.83, open-direct schema 27.64 and 5.09, embarrassed-conservative 20.93 and 4.61, body image 128.96 and 27.35, sexual anxiety 13.13 and 3.91 and sexual function 49.83 and 8.67. According to the results of path analysis, passionate-romantic (β = 0.51), explicit-comfortable (β = 0.27), shy-conservative (β = -0.59), and body image (β = -0.62) schemas showed a significant relationship with sexual function. Sexual function anxiety as a mediating variable also had a significant role (β = -0.41) in female sexual function. Sexual function anxiety, negative body image, and negative sexual schema negatively affect women's sexual function, and positive sexual schemas and body image positively affect sexual function anxiety.

A Quantitative Study of Intimate Partner Violence Context: Is Self-Compassion Related to Sexual Esteem?

Intimate partner violence (IPV) is defined as physical, psychological, or sexual violence perpetrated by a partner. This conduct is harmful and has long-term negative consequences for people who encounter it, particularly psychological illnesses. This has an impact on judgment, self-satisfaction with sexuality, and sexual function. This can influence how people evaluate their relationships and sexuality, how individuals assess their worth in a sexual context, which is thought to be related to self-compassion in individuals. This study drew 227 participants, consisting of men and women aged 20 to 30 who have been or are now in a dating relationship for at least one year. Purposive sampling was used to collect the research sample. The Conflict Tactic Scale Revised-2 (CTS-2) measurement tool, the Multidimensional Sexual Self-Concept Questionnaire (MSSCQ) subscale sexual esteem, and the Self-Compassion Scale were utilized for data collection. The direction of the association between variables is positive, indicating that the higher the level of self-compassion ability, the higher the level of sexual-esteem capacity in persons, and vice versa.

Construction and validation of a scale of sexual self-concept for the elderly Chilean population.

Sexual self-concept has a central role in the life of the elderly population. Indeed, their sexual self-concept has significant and positive relationships with their satisfaction with life, pleasure, and willingness to interact with others. However, social-cultural prejudice means that the elderly are considered asexual individuals, harming their sexual self-concept. This prejudice is prominent in Chile, where the elderly do not have access to clear information about their sexuality. However, research on the Chilean elderly population is still in its infancy and requires more attention. Hence, this research aims to construct and validate a scale of sexual self-concept for the elderly Chilean population to cover this identified gap in the literature. Sixty items were integrated into the first version of the scale. Ten external judges were asked to assess the content validity. Twenty-eight items were maintained. Subsequently, an instrumental and cross-sectional design was implemented with a non-probabilistic sampling (N = 188). Items were refined with corrected homogeneity indices and conditional estimates of Cronbach's alpha and Omega coefficient. A final scale of nine items equally distributed in three dimensions was obtained: Sexual self-efficacy (ω = 0.867), Sexual assertiveness (ω = 0.764), and Sexual self-esteem (ω = 0.803). The confirmatory factor analysis reflects that the theoretical model has an adequate fit (CFI = .989; TLI = .984; RMSEA = .086). The data analyses confirmed that the scale has adequate psychometric properties. This scale can be used for multidimensional measurements of sexual self-concept in the elderly in Chile. Further research can confirm its psychometric properties in different settings within the Spanish language population.

Sexual Self-Concept After Child Maltreatment: The Role of Resilient Coping and Sexual Experience Among U.S. Young Adults.

Evidence supports sexual experience as normative and health-promoting for many, but this picture is less clear for people with histories of adversity. Amazon Mechanical Turk (MTurk) was used to garner data from a sample of 362 young adults (aged 18-25) wherein 44.5% (n = 161) identified as women. We assessed longitudinal associations between child maltreatment and sexual self-concept, as mediated by sexual behaviors and sexual partners, and whether resilient coping moderated these associations using structural equation modeling. Although both child maltreatment and resilient coping were directly associated with aspects of sexual experience, only resilient coping was directly associated with sexual self-concept. In addition, we found support for sexual experience as a mediator between child maltreatment/resilient coping and sexual self-concept. Specifically, cumulative maltreatment was associated with more sexual partners, which was associated with higher sexual self-monitoring. Resilient coping was associated with more sexual partners and more sexual behaviors, which was associated with higher sexual self-monitoring and higher sexual self-consciousness, sexual assertiveness, sexual self-esteem, and sexual motivation, respectively. Thus, sexual behaviors and sexual partners operated independently. Findings contrast messaging that sexual experience is universally risky regardless of maltreatment history. Rather, sexual experience may foster positive sexual self-concept for some. Sexual health advocates must attend to differences between sexual behaviors and sexual partners in relation to sexual well-being, and support resilience in the sexual domain.

Satanists’ sexual self-concept

The present study examines several sexual behaviors and attitudes within an international sample (n = 908) of modern Satanists. Sociodemographic and religious data from this sample are provided. Frequencies of Satanists’ engagement in different sexual behaviors are also explored. Furthermore, two aspects of Satanists’ sexual self-concept, sexual self-esteem and sexual anxiety, are assessed along with these variables’ relationships with the strength of Satanists’ group identity and the length of time identifying as a Satanist. Results indicate that the strength of Satanists’ identity impacts both their sexual self-esteem and sexual anxiety. Limitations and directions for future research on Satanism and sexuality are discussed.

"Finding My Worth as a Sexual Being": A Qualitative Gender Analysis of Sexual Self-Concept and Coping in Survivors of Childhood Sexual Abuse.

Childhood sexual abuse (CSA) is likely to have impacts on adult survivors' sexuality, particularly on their sexual self-concept. However, little is known about how survivors cope with CSA-related sexual impacts, including sexual self-concept impairments. Thus, this study aimed to examine the interplay between sexual self-concept and coping strategies in CSA survivors by (1) documenting the manifestations of their impaired sexual self-concepts; (2) identifying their strategies to cope with the sexual impacts of CSA; and (3) examining gender differences on sexual self-concept impairments and coping strategies. Content analysis was conducted on semi-structured interviews with 25 women and 26 men adult survivors of CSA recruited via social networks and victim support organizations. Analyses yielded three conceptual categories: (1) Developing an unconsolidated and unfavorable sexual self-concept following CSA; (2) Avoiding CSA-related sexual impacts and impaired sexual self-concept; (3) Approaching CSA-related sexual impacts with more authenticity. Men often managed their suffering and compensated for their impaired sexual self-concept by engaging in sexual dominance and over-investment, by accepting their sexual difficulties and relying on medication to overcome them. Women tended to restrict themselves and disconnect sexually to avoid suffering, complied with their partners' sexual demands out of a sense of duty, prioritized sexual intimacy over orgasm, and seek professional help. Interventions with survivors should promote the development of approach strategies to cope with sexual difficulties, including self-concept impairments, and foster sexual authenticity.
