Sex Differences Across the Lifespan: A Focus on Cardiometabolism.

Women's health and sex differences research remain understudied. In 2022, to address the topic of sex differences, the Ludeman Family Center for Women's Health Research (LFCWHR) at the University of Colorado (LudemanCenter.org) held its third National Conference, "Sex Differences Across the Lifespan: A Focus on Metabolism." The research presentations and discussions from the 2022 conference addressed cardiometabolic sex differences across the lifespan and included sessions focusing on scientific methods with which to study sex differences, effects of estrogen on metabolism, and sex differences in cardiovascular disease-implications for women and policy among others. Over 100 participants, including basic scientists, clinical scientists, policymakers, advocacy group leaders, and federal agency leadership participated. The meeting proceedings reveal that although exciting advances in the area of sex differences have taken place, significant questions and gaps remain about women's health and sex differences in critical areas of health. Identifying these gaps and the subsequent research that will result may lead to important breakthroughs.

Girls exhibit greater empathy than boys following a minor accident

Hundreds of studies find that girls and women report feeling greater empathy than boys and men in response to adverse events befalling others. Despite this, few non-self-report measures demonstrate similar sex differences. This produces the oft-cited conclusion that to conform to societal expectations of appropriate sex-typed behavior females report higher levels of empathy. Several studies of sex differences in areas of brain activation and on infants’ and young children’s behavior however provide suggestive findings that self-reports reflect actual underlying sex differences in experiencing concern about others. We demonstrate using behavioral indices that females experience more empathy than males after witnessing an adverse event befall a same-sex classmate. In our study, one member of a pair experienced a minor accident on the way to constructing a tower while a bystander observed. We measured whether bystanders ceased their ongoing activity, looked at the victim, waited for the victim to recover from the accident, and actively intervened to help the victim. Female more than male bystanders engaged in these activities. These behavioral results suggest that an adverse event produces different subjective experiences in females than males that motivate objectively different behaviors, consistent with findings from self-report measures of empathy.

Two years later, in 2018, CWHR organized the 2nd National Conference. The research presentations and discussions from the 2018 conference also addressed sex differences across the lifespan with a focus on cardiometabolism and expanded the focus by including circadian physiology and effects of sleep on cardiometabolic health. Over 100 participants, including basic scientists, clinicians, policymakers, advocacy group leaders, and federal agency leadership participated. The meeting proceedings reveal that although exciting advances in the area of sex differences have taken place, significant questions and gaps remain about women's health and sex differences in critical areas of health. Identifying these gaps and the subsequent research that will result may lead to important breakthroughs.

Assessing Preoperative Risk Factors With Sex Disparities in Total Joint Arthroplasty Patients and Financial Outcomes From the National Inpatient Sample Database

Disparities in the healthcare system imply potential risks for vulnerable groups whose needs are not appropriately met. Total joint arthroplasty (TJA) is successful in treating end-stage arthritis, resulting in increased demand for the procedure, however remains underused in both sexes, especially in women. Although multiple studies assessed the differences in postoperative morbidities between sexes, there remains a lack in understanding patients' preoperative clinical profile and nonclinical demographics. The aim of this study is to provide a population-based epidemiologic assessment of preoperative risk factors and sex disparities and assess differences in outcomes following TJA. The National Inpatient Sample database from 2006 to 2011 was analyzed. Patients who underwent primary total knee and hip arthroplasty were identified and stratified into two cohorts of male and female, and demographic data and comorbidities were collected. Postoperative complications, length of stay, total charges, and discharge destination were measured for matched cohorts. Female patients present for TJAs at an older average age, are less likely to present with AIDS, alcohol abuse, coagulopathy, congestive heart failure, drug abuse, liver disease, peripheral vascular disease, and renal failure, and are more likely to present with anemia, autoimmune disorders, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, depression, obesity, and valvular disease. Postoperatively, the average length of stay for female patients was markedly higher (3.52 versus 3.39) and a lower percentage went home (59% versus 73%). Overall, female patients experience greater odds of any complication while in-patient. This study highlighted sex differences in areas that could account for the underuse of the procedure in both sexes, with women affected to a greater extent. Understanding these factors will help address the unmet needs of both sexes after TJA by encouraging future studies and provider education to ensure that all patients are able to access the necessary procedures for pain relief and functional improvement.

A comparison of task-based mental fatigue between healthy males and females

ABSTRACT Background: The issue of cognitive sex differences has been a topic of interest for researchers for several decades. The present study investigated the relatively new area of sex differences in mental fatigue. Methods: Mental fatigue was evaluated via a modified visual analogue mood scale (VAMS) and Activation Deactivation Adjective Checklist (AD-ACL) before and after a task designed to induce mental fatigue. The participants performed a reaction time task in three blocks of 17 min, without any rest time between the blocks. Results: Mental fatigue increased after each 17-min block for both sexes with no significant differences between males and females (P = .54). Females had slower reaction time within the first block but slightly faster reaction time within the second and third blocks (P ≤ .001). Conclusion: Although no significant differences in mental fatigue between male and female groups were found, the results may suggest that task unfamiliarity had a more negative influence on reaction times in females than males.

Experimental But Not Sex Differences of a Mental Rotation Training Program on Adolescents.

Given the importance of visuospatial processing in areas related to the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) disciplines, where there is still a considerable gap in the area of sex differences, the interest in the effects of visuospatial skills training continues to grow. Therefore, we have evaluated the visuospatial improvement of adolescents after performing a computerized mental rotation training program, as well as the relationship of this visuospatial ability with other cognitive, emotional factors and those factors based on the experience with videogames. The study, which was performed on students aged 14 and 15 years old, showed a significant improvement in this visuospatial skill for a training group (n = 21) compared to a control group (n = 24). Furthermore, no significant sex differences were obtained for spatial ability or for any of the other tasks evaluated, either before or after training. Regarding the relationship between skills, a significant correlation between experience with video games and spatial ability was found, as well as between mathematical reasoning and intelligence and with spatial ability in the initial phase for the total sample. These findings are discussed from a cognitive point of view and within the current sociocultural context, where the equal use of new technologies could help reduce the visuospatial gap between sexes.

Semantic processing in auditory lexical decision: Ear-of-presentation and sex differences

In this study we examined the interplay between appetitive (approach) and defensive (avoid) responses in spoken word recognition. Ninety-two right-handed participants (half women) took part in an auditory lexical decision experiment in which speech was presented to only one ear. The danger and usefulness of the word referents interacted in predicting RTs, as in previous (binaural) studies with poorer control of psycholinguistic covariates. Specifically, higher danger ratings were associated with faster RTs for words rated low on usefulness; but higher danger ratings were associated with slower RTs for words rated high on usefulness. In addition to this primary finding, men showed more lateralised performance, as indicated by significant interactions of sex and ear of presentation with word frequency, and with the animacy of the word referents. For both sexes, word frequency had a stronger effect on accuracy for speech presented to the right ear. Finally, men's but not women's RTs were related to the danger dimension. This last finding provides an intriguing avenue for future research in the area of sex differences and emotion.

A‐LEVEL EXPECTANCIES AND UNIVERSITY ASPIRATIONS OF MALES AND FEMALES

Summary. This study, utilising both an examination of the national statistics and a detailed survey of a smaller group of sixth form students, draws attention to the sex differences still found in expected and actual examination results. In gross numbers of students and passes, girls are likely to reach equality with boys up to A‐level in the fairly near future. However, two areas of sex differences, the sex stereotyping of subject choices and the grade attainments of males and females, still represent sources of grave concern for anyone worried about inequality. In the future the real test will be whether the boundaries break down around the courses that are now still predominantly male or female in recruitment, and whether the more general sex‐typing of higher education as masculine subsides sufficiently for females to both want, and expect, to equal the performance of their male peers.

Partisan Preference and Income Redistribution: Cross-National and Cross-Sexual Results

AbstractThe relationships between attitudes toward income redistribution and partisan preferences are examined and contrasted in Canadian and American samples of college students. In both samples evidence is found that there is a strong relationship between the variables among males and an absence of a relationship among females. In Canada, support for income redistribution is strongly positively correlated with support for the New Democratic party, positively correlated with support for the Liberal party, and strongly negatively correlated with support for the Progressive Conservative party. In the United States support for income redistribution is strongly positively correlated with support for the Democratic party and strongly negatively correlated with support for the Republican party. Cross-national differences are also found between Canadian and American subjects, Canadian subjects having significantly lower variance among party supporters regarding this issue. Some implications of the results for research in the area of sex differences in politics and the influence of economic concerns on political behaviour are discussed briefly.

Bright girls, mathematics and fear of success

A review of the relevant literature has identified two important areas of sex differences in the field of mathematics. Not only do considerably more boys than girls perform very well in mathematics, but girls, far more frequently than boys, choose not to take intensive mathematics courses once they are no longer compulsory. A variety of factors are frequently cited to explain such consistent sex differences. This paper reports two studies that examine whether there is a relation between fear of success and sex differences in performance and participation in mathematics courses. The evidence provided highlights the effect of environmental pressures. Possible classroom based intervention programs are discussed.

AN INVESTIGATION OF THE RELATIONSHIP OF SEX AND SEX ROLE TO THE ABILITY TO DECODE NONVERBAL CUES

This paper reports an investigation of the ability to decode nonverbal cues. Past studies of decoding have often tested for differences in ability between males and females. Results do not consistently favor the ability of one sex over the other, but, when differences do appear, they indicate greater sensitivity for females. Researchers in the area of sex differences in human communication emphasize that variability may be related to sex roles. With regard to nonverbal sensitivity, researchers have suggested that femininity may be associated with better nonverbal decoding because of practice gained in traditionally feminine occupations. It has also been reasoned that certain traits, such as submissiveness and expressiveness, are linked to both femininity and nonverbal sensitivity. The present study investigates the relationship of sex, sex role, and nonverbal sensitivity. Whereas female sex was found to be positively associated with nonverbal ability, femininity was negatively related. Several interpretations of this surprising result are offered.

The role of sex and personality in the prenegotiation stage of coalition formation

Research in the area of sex differences in coalitional behavior has produced inconsistent results that may be partially resolved through an examination of personality and attitudinal differences between males and females. The responses of males and females to the Shure and Meeker Personality/Attitude Schedule were analyzed and the sexes differed in their elevation on six major factors. A subsample of each sex participated in a coalition game situation. Four of the six personality and attitude factors were related to prenegotiation stage indices of coalition formation. It was suggested that the role of sex differences in coalitional behavior may be mediated by sex role socialization differences.

Sex Differences in Reading: An Evaluation and a Critique of Current Theories

It has been a common research finding that girls are generally better readers than boys, and that the magnitude of sex differences in reading is usually found to be greater than for sex differences in other measures of verbal abilities. Girls characteristically learn to read earlier, achieve higher scores on standardized reading tests (more markedly so in the primary grades), and account for a lower percentage of the pupils referred for remedial reading work than do boys. The question of sex differences in reading has received wide attention from researchers and educators since the thirties. Perhaps the scope of this attention is related to the direction of the sex difference. It is possible that sex differences in reading might not be as widely investigated if the difference were in the other direction-if boys were superior to girls. This would imply a tacit assumption among educators and researchers that boys should be superior to girls in everything that counts. Awareness of this possibility is important to the interpretation of much of the research in the area of sex differences.
