Clinical Features of Temporomandibular Disorders: Validity and Reliability of the Fonseca Anamnestic Index in Persian

Background: Temporomandibular Disorders (TMDs) are a group of disorders associated with masticatory dysfunction. TMDs are usually diagnosed late which leads to complicated treatments. Early diagnosis and treatment of TMDs are essential. Methods: A valid and reliable version of Fonseca’s Anamnestic Index (FAI) was prepared in Persian from the English version. It was used to assess TMD in 350 patients. Clinical signs of TMD were also recorded based on examination. Results: FAI scores showed 161(46%) people had TMD. There was no significant difference between occlusion classes in terms of the frequency of TMD. There was no significant difference between the mean maximum mouth opening and severity of TMD. Conclusion: In this study the validity and reliability of the FAI in Persian language, as a simple tool for TMD screening in health centers, was confirmed. Based on results, there is a relationship between clinical findings and the severity of TMD by using FAI and it can be used for screening TMD patients.

Exploring the association between orthodontic treatment and temporomandibular disorders in pediatric patient: A retrospective study

OBJECTIVE: This retrospective study aimed to investigate the association between orthodontic treatment and development of temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) in pediatric patients. METHODS: This study analyzed 122 pediatric patients (age 10–18 years) who underwent orthodontic treatment. The inclusion criteria included comprehensive orthodontic records and substantial clinical documentation, while the exclusion criteria targeted preexisting TMDs or syndromes affecting the temporomandibular joint. Demographic details, treatment characteristics, and radiographic analyses, including standardized cephalometric measurements, were recorded. Clinical records were systematically reviewed for signs and symptoms of TMD, with categorization based on TMD severity using the Research Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders (RDC/TMD). RESULTS: Demographic characteristics revealed a mean age of 14.2 years, with a sex distribution of 36.9% males and 63.1% females. Pain, clicking/popping sounds, and limited jaw movement were reported by 23.0%, 16.4%, and 12.3% of the patients, respectively. TMD severity classification showed that 73.8% had no symptoms, 20.5% had mild symptoms, 4.1% had moderate symptoms, and 1.6% had severe symptoms. Statistical analyses revealed a significant association between TMD symptoms and sex (P = 0.023). Correlations among TMD severity, treatment duration (P = 0.036), and cephalometric changes were observed. Radiographic findings showed a moderate correlation with the gonial angle (r = 0.42) and a strong correlation with the condylar position (r = 0.58). CONCLUSION: This study provides insights into the complex relationship between orthodontic treatment and TMD development in pediatric patients. These findings suggest potential associations between treatment characteristics, cephalometric changes, and TMD symptoms.

Prevalence and Severity of Temporomandibular Disorders in A Group of Iranian Musicians

ObjectiveAllegedly playing a musical instrument is a contributing factor to developing TMD signs and symptoms, but the literature is incoherent. The main aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of TMD among amateur musicians for the first time in the Iranian population. MethodsThis is a descriptive questionnaire-based cross-sectional study that includes 140 amateur musicians (35 international wind instrumentalists, 35 traditional wind instrumentalists, 35 international string instrumentalists, and 35 traditional string instrumentalists). Forty-eight violinists were studied separately from other study groups. The Fonseca questionnaire was used to evaluate TMD in this sample. A P-value of 0.05 was considered significant. ResultsThe Prevalence of the study sample was 72.8%. The prevalence of TMD and the mean severity score among musicians of international wind instruments, traditional wind instruments, international string instruments, and traditional string instruments were 77.1%, 67.6%, 82.8%, and 62.8%, and 30.00 ± 15.52, 32.42 ± 14.92, 30.71 ± 18.75, and 28.57 ± 19.87, respectively. The study groups did not show any significant differences regarding the TMD severity score. The prevalence of TMD was higher among women (P = 0.000017) and wind instrumentalists (P = 0.009). The prevalence of TMD and the mean severity score among violinists were 62.85% and 26.85 ± 20.68, respectively. ConclusionsRegardless of class or category, the prevalence of TMD is high among musicians compared to the available statistics reported previously on the Iranian population in the literature. Moreover, TMD prevalence is higher among wind instrumentalists than string instrumentalists.

Association of Malocclusion with Temporomandibular Disorders: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Background/Objectives: Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) encompass a range of musculoskeletal and neuromuscular conditions affecting the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and associated structures. This cross-sectional study, conducted in a Portuguese TMD department, aimed to assess the relationship between malocclusion and TMD severity. Methods: Data on demographic variables, TMD clinical symptoms, and malocclusion classes were collected using the EUROTMJ database. The Chi-square test (χ2) identified associations, with their intensity measured by Cramér's V (φc). Results: The study included 1170 patients (932 females and 238 males), with a mean age of 41.73 ± 16.80 years. Most patients exhibited Angle Class I malocclusion (85.5%), followed by Angle Class II (13.5%) and Angle Class III (1.1%). Class II malocclusion was associated with increased TMD severity (p < 0.001), higher myalgia levels (p = 0.002), more frequent disc displacement without reduction (p = 0.002) and lower maximum mouth opening values (Class II: 38.13 ± 7.78 mm, Class I: 39.93 ± 8.67 mm). Significant associations were also found between malocclusion type and arthralgia (p = 0.021), mouth-opening limitation (p = 0.016), and TMJ crepitus (p = 0.017). In cases of malocclusion, the presence of oral signs of bruxism explained the degree of myalgia, disc displacement, and severity (p = 0.003; p = 0.048; p = 0.045). Conclusions: This study highlights that (1) the most common type of dental malocclusion in TMD patients was Class I; (2) Class II malocclusion was associated with increased TMD severity and oral signs of bruxism; and (3) Class III was rarely observed in TMD consultation. The findings suggest that bruxism behavior in cases of malocclusion may be significant in TMD.

Exploring the Association Between Physical Fitness (High Intensity and Low Intensity) and the Incidence of Temporomandibular Disorders: A Comparative Study.

Temporomandibular joint disorders affect the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), masticatory muscles, and associated structures. Symptoms include TMJ pain, limited jaw movement, muscle tenderness, and referred pain. Physical activity can alleviate musculoskeletal pain. This study explored the link between physical fitness (high and low intensity) and temporomandibular disorder (TMD) incidence. Sixty patients were divided into three groups in this comparative study. Group I underwent 30 minutes of high-intensity aerobic training. Group II had 30 minutes of low-intensity yoga sessions weekly. Group III received health education. TMD was diagnosed using the Fonseca Anamnestic Index (FAI). Pain intensity was measured using the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) and the Pain Self-Efficacy Questionnaire (PSEQ). Of the participants, 38.1% were males and 61.9% were females. TMD severity was mild (25.0%), moderate (55.0%), and severe (20.0%). High-intensity training groups had higher TMD symptom severity than low-intensity groups (p = 0.001). VAS scores increased in group I and decreased in group II (significant). PSEQ scores decreased in group I and increased significantly in group II. Group III showed no significant differences in PSEQ scores. High-intensity training resulted in moderate TMD symptoms. Low-intensity training was beneficial for TMD pain. The study recommends combining low-intensity physical workouts with medications to alleviate TMD.

Conceptualising TMD symptom burden in youths: Symptom duration, frequency, intensity and interference.

This study aimed to conceptualise Temporomandibular disorder (TMD) symptom burden and severity and explored their interrelationships with somatic symptoms and psychological distress. Participants were recruited from a local polytechnic. The quintessential five TMD symptoms (5Ts) of the Diagnostic Criteria for TMDs (DC/TMD) were appraised and extended to evaluate the duration, frequency, intensity and interference of discrete TMD symptoms. Global TMD severity (GS) was computed by totaling the points for all TMD symptoms and dimensions. TMD (TS) and somatic symptom (SS) burden were assessed based on the Somatic Symptoms Scale-8, while psychological distress was measured with the Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scales-21. Statistical analyses were performed using Kruskal-Wallis/Dunn tests and Spearman's correlation (α = .05). Of the 366 eligible participants (mean age 19.1 ± 2.3 years), 51.4% were 5Ts-negative and 48.6% were 5Ts-positive. Among the 5Ts-positive individuals, 25.3%/64.0% were 'bothered a little' whereas 4.5%/10.7% were 'bothered a lot' by TMD pain/headache. Correspondingly, 32.6%/12.4%/5.1% were 'bothered a little' while 2.8%/2.8%/1.1% were 'bothered a lot' by TMJ sounds/closed/open locking. TS burden was moderate-to-strongly correlated to aggregate symptom duration, frequency, intensity, interference, GS and SS burden (rs = .50-.88). While TS burden and GS were weakly associated with psychological distress (rs = .18-.36), SS burden was moderately related to depression, anxiety and stress (rs = .47-.53). TS burden can serve as a proxy for global TMD severity and may be more meaningful than the mere presence of TMD symptoms in clinical and research settings.

Cepstral Analysis of Voice in Patients With Temporomandibular Disorders.

This study aimed to assess the voice quality of patients with temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) compared with healthy subjects using cepstral analysis and investigate the relationship between the TMD severity and the values of cepstral analysis. Subjects who met the inclusion criteria completed a general health questionnaire and the Fonseca Anamnestic Index. Patients who had TMDs with FAI were subjected to an examination based on the Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders. The final sample included 65 subjects, 31 TMDs patients (with a mean age ± standard deviation of 36.64 ± 13.67 years), and 34 healthy individuals in the control group (with a mean age ± standard deviation of 30.35 ± 7.78 years). Cepstral Peak Prominence (CPP) and Smoothened Cepstral Peak Prominence (CPPS) of a sustained vowel and connected speech were computed using Praat software. TMD patients indicated lower cepstral values and lower voice quality compared to the control group. Significant differences were found between TMD and control groups for all cepstral parameters (P < .001) and cepstral measurements showed a moderate to strong negative correlation with TMD severity (P < .001, rho = -0.57 to -0.88). The outcomes of the present study indicate that cepstral analysis can accurately distinguish the reduced voice quality of TMD patients from normal voice.

Comparative evaluation and correlation of variations in articular disc morphology as assessed by automated segmentation using deep learning on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) images in Class II (vertical) TMD cases, Class II (horizontal) TMD cases and Class I non-TMD cases

Introduction: Temporomandibular disorder (TMD) encompasses several clinical manifestations, which are characterized by temporomandibular joint and masticatory muscle discomfort and dysfunction (TMJ). The best imaging technique for evaluating TMJ is magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), which makes it possible to see the anatomical and pathological characteristics of every joint component. In recent years, convolutional neural networks -based deep learning algorithms have been favoured because of their outstanding capability in recognizing objects in medical images. The objective of this study is to assess, compare and co-rrelate articular disc morphology by automated segmentation using deep learning on MRI images in skeletal Class II (vertical growth pattern) TMD cases as compared to skeletal Class II (horizontal growth pattern) TMD cases and Class I non-TMD cases Methods: Grading of skeletal Class II (vertical growth pattern) cases and skeletal Class II (horizontal growth pattern) cases based on severity of TMD will be carried out using diagnostic criteria for temporomandibular disorders. Bilateral sagittal as well as coronal MRI images will be obtained. A convolutional neural network (CNN) encoder-decoder named U-Net will be used to segment the articular disc on MRI. Understanding the nature of variations between Class I and both types of Class IIs will help orthodontists to better predict the potential risk for the development of TMDs and accordingly take precautions while doing treatment in such cases. Moreover, it can be used to automate TMD diagnosis and other smart applications. Conclusions: This study will aid in identifying articular disc morphology on MRI. The deep learning algorithms with effective data augmentation may perform better in MRI readings than human clinicians when using the same data, which will be advantageous for TMD diagnosis.

Temporary Hydrostatic Splint Therapy and Its Effects on Occlusal Forces.

Background and objectives: This study analyzed and compared the distribution patterns of occlusal forces using T-Scan III before and after the hydrostatic temporary oral splint (Aqualizer Ultra) therapy in healthy subjects and subjects with temporomandibular disorders (TMDs). Materials and Methods: Fifty-one subjects were divided into groups based on anamnesis and responses to the Fonseca questionnaire. The first group, non-TMDs group (n = 19), and the second group, TMDs group (n = 32), had mild-to-severe TMDs, as identified by the Fonseca questionnaire. The non-TMDs group had an average age of 25.4 years (SD = 4.8, range 20-38) with 15 females (78.95%) and 4 males (21.05%). The TMDs group had an average age of 27.4 years (SD = 7.0, range 22-53) with 25 females (78.125%) and 7 males (21.875%). T-Scan III device was used for occlusal analysis before and after hydrostatic splint usage. Results: Significant differences were observed in the TMDs group for anterior and posterior right percentages of forces before and after hydrostatic splint usage. The analysis of force distribution per sector before and after hydrostatic splint therapy showed no significant differences in the non-TMDs group. Analysis of force distributions in the entire study population before and after hydrostatic splint therapy showed significant differences in the anterior and posterior right regions. Occlusal force increased by 32-56% in the front region and decreased in the posterior area after hydrostatic splint usage. Conclusions: Hydrostatic splint therapy is recommended as a part of full-mouth rehabilitation treatment for all patients regardless of the severity of TMDs.

Association of night-time sleep and daytime napping with painful temporomandibular disorder.

Painful temporomandibular disorder (TMD) is the common cause of chronic oro-facial pain, which may interfere with sleep. Previous studies have documented an association between sleep and TMD. This study aimed to further explore the association of night-time sleep and daytime napping with painful TMD. A total of 419 patients (aged 31.88 ± 11.54 years with women forming 85.4%) from a TMD/Orofacial Pain center were enrolled. Patients' sleep conditions were evaluated with the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) questionnaire, and information on night-time sleep duration, napping duration and napping frequency was interviewed. TMD was diagnosed according to the Diagnostic Criteria for TMD protocol and stratified into myalgia (muscle pain), arthralgia (joint pain) and combined (muscle and joint pain) subgroups. The severity of TMD was measured with the Fonseca Anamnestic Index (FAI) questionnaire. Restricted cubic spline (RCS) regression models were established to explore relationships between sleep and painful TMD subgroups. Patients with poor sleep quality (PSQI≥6) had higher FAI scores (median 60, p < .001) and higher proportions of painful TMDs. The myalgia subgroup had higher PSQI scores (median 8, p < .001) than the arthralgia subgroup. The RCS models indicated a non-linear relationship between night-time sleep duration and myalgia (p < .001), which was not observed in arthralgia. However, there were no significant findings concerning napping and painful TMD subgroups. This study found that the association between sleep and TMD is mainly related to painful TMD conditions, which are associated with night-time sleep duration.

Prevalence of Temporomandibular Disorders and its Association with Stress among Students of The University of Lahore, Lahore, Pakistan

The objective of this study was to check the prevalence of Temporomandibular disorder (TMD) among the students of University of Lahore, Lahore, Pakistan, its association with stress, and to compare the prevalence among students of different departments This study included 198 students with age ranging from 18 to 25 years. The questionnaire comprised of 2 sections, the first part covered the demographic data (age, gender, semester and department) and TMD signs and symptoms using Fonseca’s questionnaire whereas the second part comprised of standardized Perceived stress scale (PSS). After taking informed consent the subjects were given the questionnaires. Fonseca’s questionnaire is a standardized scale to check the severity of TMD. The results of this study showed that most of the participants included in this study were from 21-24 of age. Among subjects, 55% were females and 45% were males with a greater number of students in their 4th or final year of degree. The Fonseca questionnaire used in this study showed that the 65-80% of the sample revealed no symptoms of TMD, while 34.2% revealed mild symptoms of TMD. Results from perceived stress scale showed a significant association between stress and TMD. Temporomandibular disorders with mild symptoms were prevalent among University of Lahore student. It was also found that stress plays an important role in the development of TMD. TMD was more prevalent among health sciences students as compared to others.

The relationship between pregnancy and temporomandibular disorder (TMD) through diagnostic criteria for temporomandibular disorders (DC/TMD) axis II evaluation: a case-control cross-sectional study

IntroductionThis study focuses on temporomandibular disorders (TMDs), which affect the temporomandibular joint and related muscles and have multiple causes. Recent studies have examined the connection between menstrual cycles, estrogen levels, and TMDs, but results are inconsistent, highlighting the need for more research. The aim is to explore the prevalence of TMDs in pregnant women and consider how hormonal changes during pregnancy might influence these disorders.MethodsIn this cross-sectional case-control study, we compared 32 pregnant women with 35 non-pregnant women. We evaluated several TMD-related factors such as pain levels, chronic pain classification, scores on the Jaw Functional Limitation Scale-20 and Oral Behaviors Checklist, and psychological health. We used various statistical methods including descriptive statistics, chi-square tests, linear regression, and adjustments for multiple comparisons to analyze the data.ResultsPregnant women showed different pain perceptions, generally reporting less pain and lower severity. Nonetheless, these differences were not uniform across all TMD-related measures. Linear regression did not find a consistent link between pregnancy and TMD scores, except for chronic pain grade, which was not significant after adjusting for multiple comparisons. There was a significant relationship between depression and TMD severity, emphasizing the need to consider mental health in TMD evaluations.DiscussionThe findings suggest that pregnancy is neither a risk nor a protective factor for TMD. Differences in pain perception, functional status, and psychological health were observed in pregnant women but were not consistent for all TMD-related aspects. The role of estrogen in TMJ health and TMD risk is complex and requires further study. The research highlights the necessity of including mental health, especially depression, in TMD assessments. More comprehensive research with larger sample sizes is essential to better understand the connections between pregnancy, TMD, and hormones, aiming to improve TMD management in pregnant women and others.

The effect of different pain characteristics on jaw functional limitations in patients with temporomandibular disorders.

Patients with painful temporomandibular disorders (TMD) more often experience jaw functional limitations. The study of jaw functional limitations should be primarily focused on painful TMD. The impact of TMD pain characteristics (source, chronicity and intensity) on jaw functional limitations were evaluated using Jaw Functional Limitation Scale (JFLS). This cross-sectional study reviewed the dental records and self-report questionnaires of patients with painful TMD. The pain source, chronicity and intensity were evaluated to study the TMD pain characteristics. The jaw functional limitations were analysed using the Thai version of the JFLS. A total of 176 patients with painful TMD were included in this study. The jaw functional limitations were affected only by pain intensity. Patients with TMD with severe pain intensity had significantly higher jaw functional limitations than those with mild-to-moderate pain intensity (p < .05). A significant association was observed between pain intensity and jaw functional limitations (p < .05). Mastication was highly restricted by pain intensity (odd ratio = 1.39, 95% confidence interval = 1.16-1.67). The present study found a significant effect of TMD pain intensity on jaw functional limitations. Patients with severe TMD pain intensity were more likely to experience jaw functional limitations, particularly mastication limitation. Management focusing on reduction of pain intensity may improve jaw functions in patients with TMD.

Pregnancy related factors and temporomandibular disorders evaluated through the diagnostic criteria for temporomandibular disorders (DC/TMD) axis II: a cross sectional study

IntroductionTemporomandibular disorder (TMD) is a multifaceted condition impacting the chewing system, with its frequency varying across different age groups and showing a higher incidence in women. The involvement of estrogen in TMD has been examined due to the presence of estrogen receptors in the TMJ area. However, the exact effect of estrogen on TMD is complex. During pregnancy, marked by significant hormonal fluctuations, the impact on TMD has been hypothesized but remains unclear due to inconsistent results from various studies.MethodsIn this cross-sectional study, we enrolled 32 pregnant women consecutively. We gathered information on demographics, TMD evaluations (using the Graded Chronic Pain Scale, Jaw Functional Limitation Scale-20, and Oral Behaviors Checklist), and mental health assessments (including Patient Health Questionnaire-9, Patient Health Questionnaire-15, and Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7). We employed descriptive statistics to summarize continuous and categorical data and used t-tests and chi-square tests for comparisons. We also conducted multivariate linear regression, adjusted for demographic factors, to investigate correlations.ResultsThe study group mainly consisted of women aged 30–35 (40.6%) and 25–30 (18.8%). Most participants had completed high school (50%) and were married (71.9%). A notable association was found between younger women (under 30) and higher levels of somatic symptoms (p = 0.008) and generalized anxiety (p = 0.015). Women in their second trimester showed lower severity of somatic symptoms (p = 0.04). A significant link was also observed between depression severity and somatic symptom severity (p = 0.01). However, we found no significant correlations with other TMD-related health aspects.DiscussionOur study identified significant associations between psychosomatic and psychological symptoms with variables like age and pregnancy trimester in pregnant women. However, it notably failed to establish a clear relationship between pregnancy-related factors and the severity of temporomandibular disorders (TMD). More comprehensive studies with larger participant pools are necessary to further validate and expand these findings.

Fatty infiltration and morphology of cervical muscles in patients with temporomandibular disorders: A case-control study.

Changes in the fatty infiltration and/or muscle volume of neck muscles can alter cervical spine alignment and cranial load distribution, which may cause pain in the orofacial region. The aim of the study was to examine the muscle volume and fatty infiltration of neck muscles in patients with temporomandibular disorders (TMD). This case-control study included 18 patients with TMD and 18 ageand sex-matched controls. The muscle volume and fatty infiltration of the neck muscles of the participants were measured using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and ITK-SNAP software. The 3D models of the sternocleidomastoid (SCM), splenius capitis (SPLC), semispinalis cervicis (SC)-semispinalis capitis (SCP), and multifidus (M) muscles within the C3-C7 range were created using ITK-SNAP, a semi-automatic segmentation software. The models were used to determine the volumes and fatty infiltration levels. The Neck Disability Index (NDI) was used to assess neck pain-related disability. The severity of TMD was determined using the Fonseca Anamnestic Index (FAI), while jaw-related disability was measured with the Jaw Functional Limitation Scale-20 (JFLS-20). Pain levels were recorded at rest and during chewing using the numeric rating scale (NRS). There were no statistically significant differences in total muscle volume, fatty infiltration volume and fatty infiltration percentage of the SCM, SPLC, SCP, SC, and M muscles between the 2 groups (p > 0.05). The patient group had higher NDI scores compared to the controls (p < 0.001). The NDI scores correlated positively with the JFLS-20 (r = 0.831, p < 0.001), FAI (r = 0.815, p < 0.001) and NRS scores at rest (r = 0.753, p < 0.001) and during chewing (r = 0.686, p < 0.001). The present study did not identify any significant differences in the neck muscle volume or fatty infiltration between the TMD patients and controls. However, the severity of neck disability was found to correlate with jaw function, pain and TMD levels.

Temporomandibular joint disorders and associated factors in a Turkish pediatric population.

To explore the presence and severity of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) signs and symptoms in a Turkish pediatric population, as well as their relationship to parafunctional behaviors, bruxism, malocclusion, anxiety, and sociodemographic traits. A cross-sectional study was conducted with patients between the ages of 5-15. Demographic variables, TMD signs and symptoms, parafunctional habits, bruxism, and malocclusion were evaluated by clinical examination. Fonseca Anamnestic Index (FAI) was used to determine the presence and severity of TMD. State-Trait Anxiety Scale for Children (STAI-C) was used to evaluate the anxiety. Student t, Mann-Whitney U, chi-square tests, and logistic regression were used for statistical analysis. One hundred sixty-two participants (85 girls, 77 boys) with a mean age of 10.03 ± 1.88 years were included. The frequency of the participants who reported signs/symptoms of TMD was 19.7% according to FAI scores. Logistic regression analysis with the associated factors showed a significant relationship between the presence of the signs/symptoms of TMD and parafunctional habits (OR 4.24, 95% CI 1.64-10.93), and the presence of signs/symptoms of anxiety (OR 1.09, 95% CI 1.02-1.16). Children and adolescents who exhibit parafunctional behaviors and anxiety had a higher likelihood of having TMD signs/symptoms of varying degrees of severity.

Temporo-mandibular joint function has been extensively studied for more despite extensive investigation, the complicated etiology of TMJ dysfunction has remained a mystery for more than a century. Temporomandibular disorder (TMD) is a sub - class of painful orofacial conditions characterized by complaints of pain in the region of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), difficulty concentrating craniocervicofacial muscles, especially mastication muscles, limitations of mandibular movement, and the presence of articular clicking. Emotional stress, occlusal interferences, tooth loss, postural deviation, muscles of mastication neuromuscular both internal and external dysfunction anomalies in Temporo-mandibular joint anatomy, and the multiple interrelationships between these factors all contribute to the complicated etiology of TMD.Aim: Determine the prevalence of temporomandibular joint disorder between college students. The sample for this sectional potential study consisted of 691 college students (339 male and 352 female). Self-reported questionnaires were used to determine the incidence and severity of TMJ disorders. By virtue of the quantity and frequency of notable replies, the rankings were upgraded to an intensity ranking. Results:56.6% of students reported some level of TMD, including 39.7% with mild TMD, 12.2% with moderate TMD, and 4.6% with severe TMD. Historically, no significant correlation between gender and TMD severity was observed.Conclusion: This student population exhibited a high prevalence of TMD; however, the majority of cases were mild. The statistical significance of the association between TMD severity and gender is no longer proven. Despite having TMD. The students had little knowledge of their conditions.

Prevalence and Clinical Characteristics of Temporomandibular Disorders in Adults: An Epidemiological Study in the Mediterranean Region of Turkiye

The prevalence and clinical characteristics of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) in the Mediterranean region of Türkiye have not yet been thoroughly investigated. Objective: This study aimed to determine the prevalence and severity of TMD in a sample of the population in this region and to characterize the clinical findings related to TMD. Methods: Four hundred and one participants were included in this study. “Presence of TMD” in the participants was evaluated using the Fonseca Anamnestic Index. Through clinical examination, the findings in the participants were classified as limited mouth opening, deviation, temporomandibular joint (TMJ) sounds, TMJ pain, and muscle pain. Results: The prevalence of TMD was found to be 66.8%, with “Mild TMD” being the most frequent diagnosis among the participants. Clinical findings related to TMD were detected in 48.6% of the participants, and TMJ sounds were the most common clinical finding. TMD was most commonly found in participants over the age of 52, and clinical findings related to TMD were most common in participants between the ages of 25 and 38. In addition, a relationship was found between “Presence of clinical findings” and the gender and age of the participants (p &lt; 0.001 for both comparisons). Conclusion: The results show that females may be more prone to TMD than males. During clinical examinations, it should be considered that “Presence of clinical findings” may be related to gender and age.

Frequency and Severity of Temporomandibular Disorders Among Weightlifters at Fitness Centers in a Subset Population of Saudi Arabia: A Cross-Sectional Observational Study.

Background Teeth clenching in weightlifters is a common finding that may result in temporomandibular disorders (TMDs). This study aimed to evaluate the severity and frequency of TMDs among weightlifters at fitness centers in Saudi Arabia. Methods A cross-sectional study was designed to collect data from weightlifters at fitness centers. A non-probability convenient sampling technique was applied using a valid and reliable Fonseca's questionnaire on a Google Sheet (Google, Mountain View, CA) to collect participant data. The survey was conducted from November 2022 to April 2023. Epi Info software (CDC,Atlanta, Georgia) was used to calculate the sample size, and a minimum sample of 278 was required. The data underwent analysis using SPSS version 20 (IBM Corp., Armonk, NY). Results Data analyzed from 375 participants revealed that 192 (51.2%) had mild signs of TMD, whereas 128 (34.13%) of the respondents had no symptoms of TMD. A significant difference was observed among female participants in all the temporomandibular joint severity categories. A statistically significant difference was observed between both genders concerning frequent headaches, earache, and nervousness. Conclusion The prevalence of TMD is high worldwide. Unsupervised athletic activity may result in the occurrence of TMD. Fonseca's questionnaire findings reveal a mild prevalence of TMD in weightlifters.

The association of self-reported awake bruxism and sleep bruxism with temporomandibular pain and dysfunction in adult patients with temporomandibular disorders.

To investigate the association of the severity of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) pain and dysfunction with the frequency of self-reported awake bruxism (AB), sleep bruxism (SB), and stress in an adult TMD-patient population. This cross-sectional study included 237 TMD patients based on the Diagnostic Criteria for TMD. Age, sex, frequency of self-reported AB and SB, and stress were included as independent variables. TMD pain and TMD dysfunction were included as dependent variables in regression analyses. Univariate and multivariable linear regression analyses were used to predict TMD pain and TMD dysfunction in two separate models. Finally, network analysis was performed to investigate the associations between all variables. In the univariate analyses, TMD pain was significantly associated with self-reported AB-frequent (unstandardized coefficient (B) = 3.196, 95%CI 1.198-5.195, p = 0.002). TMD dysfunction was significantly associated with AB-frequent (B = 2.208, 95%CI 0.177-4.238, p = 0.033) and SB-sometimes (B = 1.698, 95%CI 0.001-3.394, p = 0.050). In the multivariable analyses, TMD pain was significantly associated with TMD dysfunction (B = 0.370, p < 0.001), stress (B=0.102, p < 0.001). TMD dysfunction was significantly associated with TMD pain (B = 0.410, p < 0.001) only. Network analysis showed that TMD pain is a bridge factor between AB, stress, and TMD dysfunction. TMD pain is directly associated with AB, stress, and TMD dysfunction, while TMD dysfunction is only associated with TMD pain. Reducing pain may improve pain-related dysfunction, and the management of AB and stress may improve TMD pain and dysfunction, and vice versa.
