Flexible Capacity Road Passenger Transport: History, Current, Future

Regular passenger transportation plays an important role in the life of modern society. At the same time, the financial burden of paying for its operation falls on the state budget and is the subject of periodic measures aimed at reducing this budgetary burden. Implementation of such goals is usually carried out by reducing the number of flights, which leads to a decrease in the quality of passenger service and their outflow to the personal car, which leads to an increase in motorization with all the negative attributes inherent in this phenomenon. This publication gives a literature review of scientific publications on the subject of the use of road passenger transport of dynamic capacity - trailer passenger vehicles, which in the period of growth of passenger traffic are coupled, increasing capacity, and in periods of decline - uncoupled, reducing capacity. Modern scientific and practical tendencies of this direction abroad are shown. A new approach to the organization of regular passenger transport operation in the Republic of Belarus is proposed, which consists in the daily forecasting of passenger capacity for each trip of each route with the subsequent assignment of passenger vehicles of flexible capacity to such trips, maximally corresponding to the available passenger capacity.

Contactless Service: Artificial Intelligence Applications of Airports

Airports are an essential part of the airline value chains. Artificial intelligence (AI) technologies are widely used at airports; they utilize two technologies: face detection and recognition. The study examines how passengers' performance expectancy and emotions affect satisfaction and willingness to adopt the AI service of passengers via familiarity. Based on the AI device, it uses acceptance and socio-technical systems perspectives; participants who adopted the AI service in airports in Beijing, Taipei, and Singapore who have the potential to use AI service usage experience more than three times; 387 completed questionnaires. A satisfaction model was analyzed using the partial least squares approach; this study used purposed sampling to collect data based on the passenger volume analysis by those airports, and 387 completed questionnaires were analyzed. With the rise of AI innovation services in airports, passengers can quickly complete boarding procedures through AI innovative services. The research findings point out that passengers' performance expectancy and emotions positively affect familiarity with AI services for passengers. AI innovations provide a service change driver for and have the potential to replace human tasks and intelligence and analytics applications at airports. AI services are a powerful tool for airports to serve their passengers efficiently, and airports will collaborate with airlines to serve passengers with AI.

Formation of a transport hub with an air terminal of international and public airlines under adverse conditions of Irkutsk

The study is aimed at exploring the possibility of building a new airport in Irkutsk as part of a major transport hub on the territory equidistant from the cities of Irkutsk, Angarsk and Shelekhov, close to the East Siberian Railway, R255 Siberia Federal Highway and the bypass road of Irkutsk. This problem requires evaluating the advantages of locating a new airport on the proposed site compared to the location of the existing airport within the city. The analytical and theoretical studies of the transport hub and types of air terminals proved the formation of the airport as part of a transport hub with a railway station and a bus station to be the most appropriate solution for the development of the city. A comparative analysis of time necessary to get to the new air terminal and to the old one showed that passengers would save time if the airport is placed the outside the city due to its easy access for residents of three cities. The conducted analysis of current trends in the development of the transport interchange hub formed the basis for recommendations on the choice of a hub type appropriate for the conditions of the city. The proposed hub will increase passenger traffic, areas for servicing passengers and aircraft, and the length of runways. Placing the airport as part of a transport hub on a free territory between three large cities and modernization will ensure a high level of quality of flights and passenger service, increase the quality of life of citizens, and significantly improve the ecology of the city.

Railway transport is traditionally preferred when travelling between 400 and 1000 km. Depending on financial possibilities and personal idea of comfort, passengers choose different types of cars. Despite the fact that the passenger is familiarised with the conditions of travel in advance (at the time of ticket purchase), requests to change seats with fellow travellers are often noted at the moment of boarding, which complicates the work of the car conductor, provokes violation of the Rules of Passenger Transportation and causes discomfort to persons with whom the passenger wants to agree on such an exchange. Despite the de facto existence of the problem, the carrier does not have statistical data on passengers' perception of seat exchange requests. This paper examines the need to introduce an additional parameter in the menu of the mobile application "RZD to Passengers" to enable early legitimate seat exchange in purchased tickets with provision for compensation for the passenger who expresses consent to the exchange in the incoming request. As a methodology of the research a set of methods of analysis, synthesis, deduction and induction was used. The author proposes to improve the quality of passenger service of long-distance trains by preventive solution of the issue of seat exchange, thereby eliminating the probability of conflict situations during the journey and reducing the number of violations of the Rules of Passenger Transport. This article may be of practical interest to companies providing passenger transport services on long-distance trains (e.g. JSC FPC, TC Grand Service Express, LLC Tverskoy Express).

The adoption of self-service check-in kiosks among commercial airline passengers

This study examines passenger adoption of self-service check-in kiosks based on the technology acceptance model (TAM) and its extension. This study investigated the relationships between three independent variables (technology self-efficacy, need for human interaction, and perceived enjoyment) and two TAM's cognitive variables (perceived usefulness and ease of use). The analysis of these relationships is novel in aviation self-service technology research. Structural equation modeling (SEM) was employed to analyze 346 valid responses. The analysis reveals that enjoyment enhances the perception of self-service check-in kiosks as useful and easy to use, resulting in greater intention to use them. Moreover, passengers with higher confidence in their technological self-efficacy are more likely to perceive check-in kiosks as helpful. However, passengers may perceive kiosks as less useful when they require more human interaction. The results of this study contribute to the current knowledge on aviation self-service adoption. Additionally, managerial implications are offered to improve the future of airlines' passenger services.

Robust optimization of train timetables with short-length and full-length services considering uncertain passenger volume and service choice behavior

Train timetables with a combination of short-length and full-length services can adapt to spatial and temporal variations in demand. However, with such timetables, some passengers may choose to catch an earlier short-length service and then transfer to a full-length service to reach their destinations rather than waiting for a crowded full-length service. This uncertain service choice behavior frequently occurs, which, however, was not well considered in most studies on demand-oriented timetabling. Therefore, this study presents a robust timetabling approach based on the scenario-based method considering uncertain passenger volumes and service choice behavior for choosing different types of train services. A customized decomposition-based method with an iterative solution procedure is designed to solve the proposed model. In each iteration, a multi-agent-based simulation algorithm is developed to update passengers’ travel utility and the service choice preference proportion based on the previous iteration’s timetabling results. To obtain high-quality solutions in an acceptable computing time, a hybrid “ALNS + GUROBI” algorithm is developed to handle the timetabling problems for large-scale cases. The proposed method optimizes the train timetables for Xi’an Metro Line 3 in China. Our results indicate that the proposed method can account for uncertain passenger volumes and service choice behavior by adjusting the short-length plans and train headways to match the transport capacity to passenger demand.

Analysing group‐ and metatechnology efficiencies and technology gap of airlines for a sustainable future

AbstractAirline performance evaluation, which involves incorporating sustainable concepts, provides stakeholders and managers with an objective basis for decision‐making. This evaluation considers not only conventional metrics but also environmental impacts, contributing to the advancement of sustainable development goals. This study incorporates a two‐stage network of airline operations, which implies that airlines utilise limited resources to meet their service capacity in the first stage and generate passenger and cargo services alongside carbon emissions in the second stage. The study proposes a union dynamic network data envelopment analysis model, which integrates group technology and meta‐technology into a unified model. This model not only solves the unreasonable technology gap ratio problem but also accounts for the technological heterogeneity (whether or not to participate in a strategic alliance) and the dynamic efficiency of different airlines in the network structure during different operation periods. A sample of 24 global airlines from 2017 to 2019 is used in the study. The empirical results show that the dynamic total meta‐efficiency of the alliance group is significantly greater than that of the nonalliance group over the 3 years. This suggests that joining a strategic alliance has a positive effect on airlines' operational efficiency while reinforcing their commitment to sustainability initiatives.

Prediksi Kebangkrutan dengan Altman Z-Score dan Springate pada Maskapai Penerbangan Terdaftar di BEI Periode 2016-2023

An airline is a company that offers air transportation services for passengers and cargo. This research aims to analyze bankruptcy predictions for airline companies listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange (BEI) during the 2016-2023 period using the Altman Z-Score (Modified) model and the Springate model. The research population consists of 12 companies operating in the transportation subsector, focusing on the air transportation industry (airlines). The sample used includes 2 airline companies listed on the IDX, namely PT Garuda Indonesia (Persero) Tbk (GIAA) and PT Jaya Trishindo Tbk (HELI). The data collection technique involves documentation in the form of secondary data, specifically the financial reports of airline companies available on the IDX or each company's website. The results of the study show that PT Garuda Indonesia (Persero) Tbk demonstrates potential bankruptcy according to the Modified Altman Z-Score with an average Z-Score of 0.568. However, this company is considered healthy by Springate with an average S-Score of 0,913. Meanwhile, PT Jaya Trishindo Tbk (HELI) is in a grey area according to the Modified Altman Z-Score with an average Z-Score of 1,101, but shows potential bankruptcy according to Springate with an average S-Score of 0,806.

Flight Schedule Optimization Considering Fine-Grained Configuration of Slot Coordination Parameters

In response to the rapid growth of air passenger and cargo transportation services and the sharp increase in congestion at various airports, it is necessary to optimize the allocation of flight schedules. On the basis of reducing the total airport delay time and ensuring the total deviation of flight schedules applied by airlines, it is necessary to consider finely configuring flight schedules with slot coordination parameters, introducing a 5 min slot coordination parameter, and optimizing airport flight schedules in different time periods. This article considers factors such as flight schedule uniqueness, corridor flow restrictions, and time adjustment range limitations to establish a three-objective flight-schedule refinement configuration model, which is solved using the NSGA-II algorithm based on the entropy weight method. Taking Beijing Capital International Airport as an example, the optimized results show that the total flight delay was reduced from 4130 min to 1142 min, and the original delay of 389 flights was reduced to 283 flights. Therefore, flight schedule optimization considering the fine-grained configuration of slot coordination parameters can effectively reduce airport delays, fully utilize time resources, and reduce waste of time slot resources.

Efficiency versus market power in the rail industry

Although an extensive literature exists that examines efficiency in rail markets, analyses that also study the market power of rail operators are scarce. We examine the effects of competition and vertical separation on efficiency and price-cost margins. In doing so we propose a two-stage procedure. Firstly, efficiency and Lerner indexes will be obtained for a sample of rail operators for the period 2000–2016. Secondly, the determinants of both indexes are jointly estimated. Results indicate that integrated incumbents not facing competition perform worst and exert the highest market power. Vertically separated and specialized in passenger services operators display the strongest improvements in efficiency levels, while integrated incumbents facing competition show the lowest market power indexes. Finally, more efficiency translates to smaller values of the Lerner index.

Towards Double-Layer Dynamic Heterogeneous Redundancy Architecture for Reliable Railway Passenger Service System

Researchers have proposed the dynamic heterogeneous redundancy (DHR) architecture, which integrates dynamic, heterogeneous, redundant, and closed-loop feedback elements into the system, to fortify the reliability of the railway passenger service system (RPSS). However, there are at least two weaknesses with the common DHR architectures: (1) they need system nodes with enough computing and storage resources; (2) they have hardly considered the reliability of DHR architecture. To this end, this paper proposes a double-layer DHR (DDHR) architecture to ensure the reliability of RPSS. This architecture introduces a set of algorithms, which are optimized co-computation and ruling weight optimization algorithms for the data processing flow of the DDHR architecture. This set improves the reliability of the DDHR architecture. For the evaluation of the reliability of DDHR architecture, this paper also proposes two metrics: (1) Dynamic available similarity metric. This metric does not rely on the overall similarity of the double-layer redundant executor sets but evaluates the similarity of their performance under the specified interaction paths within a single scheduling cycle. The smaller its similarity, the higher its reliability. (2) Scheduling cycle under dual-layer similarity threshold. This metric evaluates the reliability of the RPSS under actual conditions by setting the schedulable similarity thresholds between the same and different layers of the dual-layer redundant executives in the scheduling process. Finally, analog simulation experiments and prototype system building experiments are carried out, whose numerical experimental results show that the DDHR architecture outperforms the traditional DHR architecture in terms of reliability and performance under different redundancy and dynamically available similarity thresholds, while the algorithmic complexity and multi-tasking concurrency performance are slightly weaker than that of the DHR architecture, but can be applied to the main operations of the RPSS in general.

Chatbots applications in civil aviation passenger service: A scoping review

With the continuous development and popularization of artificial intelligence technology, chatbots, as an innovative service tool, are gradually demonstrating their significant application potential in the field of civil aviation. Chatbots can engage in real-time interactions with passengers through natural language processing technology, providing personalized services. This scoping review aims to provide a preliminary analysis of the current status, advantages, challenges, and future prospects of chatbot applications in the field of civil aviation passenger services. This review was conducted in accordance with the PRISMA extension for scoping reviews guidelines. Studies were identified by searching five prominent databases - Scopus, ACM, IEEE Xplore, Springer Link, and Web of Science - covering the period from 2015 to 2024. Chatbots have demonstrated significant potential in various applications within civil aviation passenger service, including flight inquiries, ticket booking, customer support, and baggage tracking. Existing literature indicates that chatbots can significantly enhance passenger satisfaction and loyalty by providing personalized and convenient service experiences. Additionally, they can reduce operating costs and improve service efficiency for civil aviation participants. However, challenges such as technical limitations in natural language processing and privacy protection issues remain to be addressed.

Optimalisasi Penggunaan Conveyor Belt Dalam Menunjang Pelayanan Di Bandar Udara Internasional Syamsudin Noor Banjarmasin

This study examines the optimization of conveyor belt usage in supporting passenger services at Syamsudin Noor International Airport, Banjarmasin. Conveyor belt is one of the important facilities in handling luggage that has a crucial role in accelerating the process of handling goods and reducing passenger waiting time. The less than optimal use of conveyor belts at Syamsudin Noor International Airport causes less than optimal passenger service, especially causing a buildup of passengers in the arrival terminal area. Therefore, the author conducted this research with the aim of finding out the causes of non-optimal use of conveyor belts at Syamsudin Noor Airport and the solutions that must be implemented to overcome them.This research was conducted from January 31 to February 10 2024 at Syamsudin Noor International Airport, Banjarmasin. This research uses qualitative research methods in the form of primary and secondary data. Primary data in this research was obtained from interviews conducted with 1 technical officer and 2 Terminal Service Officers. Meanwhile, secondary data in this research was obtained from literature reviews and journals related to this research. Qualitative data analysis techniques used include Data Reduction, Triangulation, and Drawing Conclusions. The research results show that optimizing and increasing conveyor belt capacity as well as implementing automatic monitoring and maintenance technology can reduce the risk of operational disruption and increase passenger satisfaction. This research also identifies solutions for terminal service area officers and mechanics to improve conveyor belt conditions that are not optimal, where the solutions suggested by the author include replacing rollers and pulleys, cleaning and lubricating components, and applying strengthening techniques.

Analisis Implementasi SOP Pasasi PT Jasa Angkasa Semesta dalam Pelayanan Penumpang di Bandar Udara Internasional Juanda Surabaya

Ground Handling is an activity of a flight company related to handling or services to passengers such as baggage, tickets and equipment for aircraft movement on the ground and the aircraft it self while at the airport both departure and arrival. The cassation unit is part of Ground Handling which has duties and responsibilities in handling passengers from the check-in process to boarding passengers, as well as handling the process of transit passengers. This study is to find out how the role of PT Angkasa Semesta services in serving passengers at Juanda International Airport Surabaya. This research is a descriptive qualitative research. The data used are primary and secondary data. Primary data include direct observation of the research object and interviews with pasasi officers. While secondary data is taking data when conducting observations and interviews such as how cassation staff work in the field and SOPs of the cassation unit related to services to passengers. The results of this study can be concluded that the role of PT Jasa Angasa semesta in passenger services at Juanda International Airport Surabaya is in accordance with the existing Procedur Operational Standards. Ground Handling officers carry out services from the check-in counter to the departure gate, supervise passenger movements on the landside and coordinate with AVSEC, AMC and RAMP. Obstacles experienced by PT Jasa Angkasa Semesta is constrained by foreign languages and then lacks the number of personnel.

Прогнозирование безопасной эксплуатации сооружений при вибрационных динамических воздействиях работающего промышленного оборудования и транспорта

Vibrational process excited in foundation soils by the operation of industrial equipment and transport traffic causes dynamic vibrations of building structures located in proximity to industrial enterprises and transport communications, which leads to additional dynamic force in building structures and violations of sanitary and hygienic norms when operating premises designed, inter alia, for working personnel and passenger services. This causes the reduction of operational characteristics of structures such as cracking and local destructions. A computational model «the source of dynamic load (equipment of industrial buildings, moving automotive and railroad transport) — medium of load transfer (soil) — building structure (receiver of impacts)» to assess such impacts has been proposed. When formating computational schemes, a simplifying assumption on the discretization of the computational scheme based on the Dalembert principle has been taken into account. Solution of the motion equations must be sought in the decomposition by appropriate vibration forms. Some simplifications of the computational model to obtain numeric engineering observable results have been substantiated. The simplified methodology to solve the problem of vibrations of bearing and enclosing structures of buildings and facilities impacted by vibrations spread in foundation soils under operating industrial equipment wheeled and railroad transport has been theoretically substantiated. The suggested methodology is based on the division of the structural scheme into separate core structures, dynamic support deviation calculation of which is to be performed sequentially. The calculation of building structures for vibrations caused by dynamic impacts of transport traffic and equipment operation can be used as a theoretical basis for the design and construction of buildings and facilities in order to ensure their safe operation.

The main points that distinguish Boeing and Airbus from each other are analyzed, and the article provides detailed information about their contributions to the aviation industry.

Digital transformation in PAS file management: A case study of PT. AP I Bali

In the current era of globalization, digitization has become a significant advancement, often utilized by companies to streamline administrative processes and reduce reliance on paper-based systems. This research explores the effectiveness of using Google Drive for the monthly accumulation of Passenger Service Charge (PSC) files at PT. AP1 Bali. It aims to assess how digital technology can optimize administrative tasks, particularly the storage and management of PAS files. Additionally, the study outlines the procedural steps involved in the accumulation of these files, offering insights into improving service efficiency. The research is conducted through interviews, observations, and documentation at the airport, using qualitative methods to analyse the collected data. The process involves data reduction, summarization, and drawing conclusions to determine how effectively Google Drive enhances the company's file management system. The expected outcomes will provide PT. AP1 Bali with practical recommendations to optimize its PAS file accumulation process and improve overall service efficiency.

MANAGEMENT OF EXCELLENCE IN A COOPERATIVE OF URBAN TRANSPORT OPERATORS

The urban mobility systems of municipalities are made up of various transport, passenger and freight services and subsystems. The mode of public passenger transport, the main one, in many cases, is operated by buses belonging to urban transport companies, and by the complementary service, operated by small vehicles. The great challenge of this format is to establish the corporate culture in the associations of operators of small vehicles, accustomed to an almost artisanal model, practically an extension of the informal or clandestine operation previously carried out. This challenge can be overcome through the actions of the Government, encouraging the formation of cooperatives, formed by these permittees. It must be considered that a cooperative has different specificities from a capital company. The management bodies of transport systems should encourage the assimilation of the management culture, more precisely the Management ® Excellence Model, which is desirable for cooperatives to have the necessary conditions to operate properly in transport systems. Hence, the general objective of this work is to provide the technical, economic, financial and structural conditions for cooperatives to have sustainability as an economic activity. The methodology used was based on an empirical, inductive and exploratory study, with the presentation of a strategic business management model. With this, it is intended to establish a management model to be followed by any entity that has delegation of operation by the Government, which, without a doubt, will constitute a great innovation in the institutional relationship with these individual operators

Integrated optimization of train line planning and timetabling: a new method of changing train operation zone and direct-service of cross-line ODs

ABSTRACT Cross-line operation increases accessibility to the railway network. However, its long-distance operation is quite difficult due to the transport resource limitations. To provide good transportation plans for operators and more direct services for cross-line passengers, we propose a new method of changing operation zones of cross-line trains, which can be summarized as the integrated train line planning and timetabling problem. A model is established to minimize deviation of same-line trains from ideal timetables and maximize cross-line origin-destination direct services. A Lagrangian relaxation approach and an improved priority-rule heuristic algorithm are developed to solve large-scale problems and obtain feasible solutions. Reality-based instances are conducted on the Beijing-Shanghai high-speed railway and its connecting lines to verify the performance of the model and solution approach. The results show the benefit of changing train operation zones, and the model and approach can help to generate a good balance between operating profit and passenger demand.
