Ontology Driven Meta-Modeling of Service Oriented Architecture

Effective modelling has helped in explain, formalize and understand Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) that is a complex architecture style inherently. Yet, a serious gap is still exist in modelling inter dependency between structural and behavioural characteristics of SOA. Beside, lack of precise semantics and formalization in modelling of SOA has made serious challenges in checking consistency over SOA models. In order to address these challenges, in this paper, an ontology driven meta-model has been proposed for SOA. The proposed meta- model is conformed towards an ontology driven meta-meta model called, Generalized Ontology Modelling (GOM). It can be further restricted towards distinct models of SOA based applications. The proposed meta-model is implemented using ontology editorial tool Protege and illustrated using suitable case study.

Extended Fault Taxonomy of SOA-Based Systems

Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) is considered as a standard for enterprise software development. The main characteristics of SOA are dynamic discovery and composition of software services in a heterogeneous environment. These properties pose newer challenges in fault management of SOA-based systems (SBS). A proper understanding of different faults in an SBS is very necessary for effective fault handling. A comprehensive three-fold fault taxonomy is presented here that covers distributed, SOA specific and non-functional faults in a holistic manner. A comprehensive fault taxonomy is a key starting point for providing techniques and methods for accessing the quality of a given system. In this paper, an attempt has been made to outline several SBSs faults into a well-structured taxonomy that may assist developers to plan suitable fault repairing strategies. Some commonly emphasized fault recovery strategies are also discussed. Some challenges that may occur during fault handling of SBSs are also mentioned.

An Approach for Effort Estimation of Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) Projects

In the last few decades SOA (Service Oriented Architecture) has become the new trend in the IT industry. Many organizations tend to migrate to SOA in order to cope with the rapidly changing business. Effort estimation of SOA projects has become a real challenge to project managers due to the limited literatures addressing this issue. The traditional effort estimation techniques do not fit SOA projects entirely, as SOA has unique characteristics were not addressed by the traditional cost estimation approaches. These unique SOA characteristics include: loose coupling, reusability, composability and discoverability. On the other hand, cost estimation approaches that were proposed to estimate SOA projects, are still immature and most of them are impractical. They cannot be used in real life projects, as they are more guidelines than actual practical cost estimation approaches. This paper proposes an effort estimation approach for SOA projects that has been applied to different variety of services. It considers SOA characteristics and the various cost factors for different types of services including available, migrated, new and composed services. This proposed approach provides effort estimation technique for each type of service. The proposed approach also gives effort distribution among project phases for easily resources allocation. This framework has been applied to real life projects in the IT industry as the SOA project is divided into its component services and each service is estimated solely based on its type. The services' efforts are then aggregated to calculate the project’s overall effort. The estimated effort relative error in the case studies ranges from 3.66 % and 19.14%.

SOAR: towards dependable Service-Oriented Architecture via reflective middleware

The dependability of Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) is usually achieved by dynamic binding and switching of replicated services, which is insufficient to handle the whole SOA system and the tradeoff between dependability and other qualities, like performance. We propose a reflective middleware based approach, called SOAR (SOA with Reflection), to dependable SOA systems. It makes four contributions: first, defining a meta model for capturing dependability threats according to SOA characteristics. Second, identifying four dependability mechanisms and their impacts on other qualities. Third, building a mathematic foundation for the tradeoff between dependability and other qualities. Fourth, demonstrating SOAR on reflective J2EE.
