A novel water optical types framework for Chinese inland waters with the application of multitype satellite sensor

ABSTRACT Optical Water Type (OWT) analysis is crucial for comprehending water composition and quality, key factors in assessing water quality over extensive areas. However, China’s inland waters lack a standardized system for such analysis. To quantitatively analyze the classification results, our study compared three K-means clustering methods, for analyzing 1310 spectral data from various Chinese lakes and reservoirs, thereby addressing this gap. The innovative split-merge K-means method identified 13 distinct OWTs that more closely adhere to the principles of minimizing intra-class distance and maximizing inter-class distance. These were categorized into four groups: clear water, turbid water, eutrophic water, and special type water. Additionally, we developed a method based on Spectral Angle Distance (SAD) to evaluate the classification capabilities of 12 satellite sensors. The results show that Sentinel-3 OLCI (Ocean and Land Color Instrument), MERIS (Medium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer), and Sentinel-2 MSI (Multispectral Instrument) have the best water classification capabilities, making them well-suited for large-scale monitoring of OWT changes. Conversely, other sensors, such as the Sustainable Development Scientific Satellite-1 (SDGSAT-1), Landsat-8, GaoFen-6, GaoFen-1, GaoFen-2, Landsat-5, Landsat-7, Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), and HuanJing-1, necessitate the consolidation of water types for effective categorization, indicative of their more limited classification capabilities.

Assessment of ocean color atmospheric correction methods and development of a regional ocean color operational dataset for the Baltic Sea based on Sentinel-3 OLCI

The Baltic Sea is characterized by large gradients in salinity, high concentrations of colored dissolved organic matter, and a phytoplankton phenology with two seasonal blooms. Satellite retrievals of chlorophyll-a concentration (chl-a) are hindered by the optical complexity of this basin and the reduced performance of the atmospheric correction in its highly absorbing waters. Within the development of a regional ocean color operational processing chain for the Baltic Sea based on Sentinel-3 Ocean and Land Colour Instrument (OLCI) full-resolution data, the performance of four atmospheric correction processors for the retrieval of remote-sensing reflectance (Rrs) was analyzed. Assessments based on three Aerosol Robotic Network-Ocean Color (AERONET-OC) sites and shipborne hyperspectral radiometers show that POLYMER was the best-performing processor in the visible spectral range, also providing a better spatial coverage compared with the other processors. Hence, OLCI Rrs spectra retrieved with POLYMER were chosen as input for a bio-optical ensemble scheme that computes chl-a as a weighted sum of different regional multilayer perceptron neural nets. This study also evaluated the operational Rrs and chl-a datasets for the Baltic Sea based on OC-CCI v.6. The chl-a retrievals based on OC-CCI v.6 and OLCI Rrs, assessed against in-situ chl-a measurements, yielded similar results (OC-CCI v.6: R2 = 0.11, bias = −0.22; OLCI: R2 = 0.16, bias = −0.03) using a common set of match-ups for the same period. Finally, an overall good agreement was found between chl-a retrievals from OLCI and OC-CCI v.6 although differences between Rrs were amplified in terms of chl-a estimates.

Sentinel-3 OLCI observations of Chinese lake turbidity using machine learning algorithms

Turbidity has a substantial effect on light propagation in water and is an optical indicator for monitoring water quality. The Ocean and Land Colour Instrument (OLCI) installed in the Sentinel-3 satellite could help to monitor turbidity variations due to its narrow spectral bandwidth and high revisit time. This makes us develop suitable turbidity algorithms for mapping the dynamics of lake turbidity using OLCI imagery. In this study, a total of 1081 samples were collected from 73 typical lakes across China during 2017–2022. Here, we developed and proposed applicable turbidity algorithms i.e., SR (simple regression), PLSR (partial least squares regression), SVR (support vector regression), BP (backpropagation neural network), KNN (K-nearest neighbor), RF (random forest), and XGBoost (extreme gradient boosting), which integrate a broad scale dataset of turbidity ranging from 0.15 NTU to 262.57 NTU using OLCI imagery. The performance results of developed turbidity algorithms demonstrated that RF obtained performed best with good agreements of measured- and derived- fitting (validation dataset: R2 = 0.92, MAPE = 54.32%, RMSE = 12.65 NTU). This allowed us to estimate turbidity concentration in Chinese lakes with a surface area>20 km2. The averaged turbidity level of lake groups in five lake regions was investigated with a decreased tendency as Northeast Plain Lake Region (NPL, 63.31 NTU) > Eastern Plain Lake Region (EPL, 58.30 NTU) > Inner Mongolia–Xinjiang Lake Region (IMXL, 16.64 NTU) > Yunnan–Guizhou Plateau Lake Region (YGPL, 11.63 NTU) > Tibetan Plateau Lake Region (TPL, 7.05 NTU). Further, we analyze the distributions of lake turbidity considering different land use types, and the results showed a decreasing tendency as cropland (56.97 NTU) > barren land (11.22 NTU) > grassland (8.06 NTU) > forest (4.71 NTU). Our results demonstrated and highlighted the quantification of lake turbidity concentrations using OLCI imagery and the stability of the RF algorithm, which can generate turbidity data for large-scale monitoring and decision-making related to environmental protection.

Optical remote sensing (Sentinel-3 OLCI) used to monitor dissolved organic carbon in the Lena River, Russia

In the past decades the Arctic has experienced stronger temperature increases than any other region globally. Shifts in hydrological regimes and accelerated permafrost thawing have been observed and are likely to increase mobilization of organic carbon and its transport through rivers into the Arctic Ocean. In order to better quantify changes to the carbon cycle, Arctic rivers such as the Lena River in Siberia need to be monitored closely. Since 2018, a sampling program provides frequent in situ observations of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM) of the Lena River. Here, we utilize this ground truth dataset and aim to test the potential of frequent satellite observations to spatially and temporally complement and expand these observations. We explored all available overpasses (~3250) of the Ocean and Land Colour Instrument (OLCI) on Sentinel-3 within the ice-free periods (May – October) for four years (2018 to 2021) to develop a new retrieval scheme to derive concentrations of DOC. OLCI observations with a spatial resolution of ~300 m were corrected for atmospheric effects using the Polymer algorithm. The results of this study show that using this new retrieval, remotely sensed DOC concentrations agree well with in situ DOC concentrations (MAPD=10.89%, RMSE=1.55 mg L−1, r²=0.92, n=489). The high revisit frequency and wide swath of OLCI allow it to capture the entire range of DOC concentrations and their seasonal variability. Estimated satellite-derived DOC export fluxes integrated over the ice-free periods of 2018 to 2021 show a high interannual variability and agree well with flux estimates from in situ data (RMSD=0.186 Tg C, MAPD=4.05%). In addition, 10-day OLCI composites covering the entire Lena River catchment revealed increasing DOC concentration and local sources of DOC along the Lena from south to north. We conclude that moderate resolution satellite imagers such as OLCI are very capable of observing DOC concentrations in large/wide rivers such as the Lena River despite the relatively coarse spatial resolution. The global coverage of remote sensing offers the expansion to more rivers in order to improve our understanding of the land-ocean carbon fluxes in a changing climate.

A preliminary assessment of Sentinel-3 ocean and land color instrument data for the estimation of chlorophyll-a concentration using bio-optical methods in Annaba Bay and El Kala’s coast (Algerian Basin)

The use of bio-optical methods and high spatial and spectral resolution satellite sensors has enabled the estimation of chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) on a large spatiotemporal scale. However, their application on a regional scale necessitates validation and, in certain cases, calibration, especially when it comes to coastal waters. This study was carried out in the eastern Algerian coastal waters to evaluate the relevance of Sentinel-3 satellite data in Annaba Bay and El Kala’s coast. Sentinel-3 OLCI (Ocean and Land Color Instrument) Level-2 products (OC4Me and Chl-a NN) and the Chl-a generated by applying the C2RCC processor on Level-1B (Chl-a C2RCC) were compared to the measured Chl-a at fixed locations. In addition, nine other Chl-a algorithms have been tested. Finally, six of those later were locally calibrated. The results demonstrate the good performance of the initially available products (Chl-a C2RCC and Chl-a NN), followed by the blue–green algorithms (OC4, OC5, OC6, MedOC4, and ADOC4), whereas the near-infrared (NIR) algorithms (2B-OLCI, 3B-OLCI, and G2B) show underwhelming performance and very poor prediction of the Chl-a concentration. Even though the OC4Me has the best correlation (r = 0.9820), it also has the highest MAE, RMSD, and BIAS (0.628, 1.264, and 0.5696, respectively). The fit of the NIR methods has been significantly refined. Nevertheless, their performance is still inadequate for the estimation of the Chl-a in our region. The performance of the calibrated OCx was improved, with the OC6-AW at the top of the list (r = 0.9881, MAE = 0.08). The latter outperforms the existing ones, which improves the estimation of Chl-a based on the Sentinel-3 OLCI data in our study area.

Global estimates of surface albedo from Sentinel-3 OLCI and SLSTR data for Copernicus Climate Change Service: Algorithm and preliminary validation

The aim of Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) is to supply reliable climate data in support of strategies to adaptation and mitigation to climate change. The C3S provides access to high-quality climate data through its Climate Data Records (CDRs) of atmospheric, marine and land Essential Climate Variables (ECVs). Global Earth Surface Albedo (SA) satellite-based products are included in the land (biosphere) portfolio. SA is a magnitude which quantifies the fraction of solar energy reflected by the surface of the Earth. This paper details the retrieval methodology and preliminary validation results for global estimates of surface albedo based on Sentinel-3 observations for the C3S ECVs data (C3S SA v3.0). The retrieval algorithm exploits the synergistic use of the Ocean and Land Colour Instrument (OLCI) and the Sea and Land Surface Temperature Radiometer (SLSTR) on-board Sentinel-3 A and B satellites. Firstly, the atmospherically corrected reflectances are generated in the Copernicus Global Land Service framework. After that, the Bidirectional Reflectance Distribution Function (BRDF) inversion module concludes the BRDF model parameters, which are transferred to the angular integration module in order to generate spectral albedo quantities for the selected OLCI (Oa03, Oa04, Oa07, Oa17 and Oa21) and SLSTR (S1, S2, S5 and S6) bands. At the end, the spectral integration module generates broadband albedo quantities in three different standard broadband spectral regions (visible [0.4μm − 0.7μm ], near infrared [0.7μm − 4μm] and total shortwave [0.3μm − 4μm]). Preliminary validation results over 10-months demonstration period (July 2018–April 2019) show, in terms of spatial and temporal consistency, that C3S Sentinel-3 SA global estimates reached in general good agreement as compared to other satellite operational references derived from MODIS (MCD43A3 C6) and PROBA-V (C3S PROBA-V SA v1.0) acquisitions. The comparison with ground data shows similar results to the MCD43A3 C6 comparisons but opposite sign in differences (marginally positive in case of Sentinel-3), with accuracy of 0.005 (3.7%), precision of 0.016 (11.3%) and uncertainty of 0.032 (22.7%). Our results have demonstrated the feasibility to estimate global fields of SA from Sentinel-3 observations, with similar quality of existing operational products. These Sentinel-3 based SA datasets will give the continuity to the existing C3S SA CDR, introducing improvements in terms of spatial resolution (300 m) and spectral information (9 spectral albedos) in contrast to previous datasets based on Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR; 4 km, 4 channels) and Vegetation instruments (VGT; 1 km, 4 channels).

A Back Propagation Neural Network-Based Calibration Approach for Sentinel-3 OLCI Near-Infrared Water Vapor Product

A back propagation neural network (BPNN)-based calibration method is developed to enhance the all-weather quality of official integrated water vapor (IWV) products from near-infrared (NIR) observations of the Ocean and Land Color Instrument (OLCI) onboard Sentinel-3A and Sentinel-3B satellites. The model utilizes multiple variables that link with the derivation of satellite NIR IWV products, including official OLCI NIR IWV, latitude, land quality and science flag, month, and solar zenith angle. The in situ IWV observations, collected from 100 Global Positioning System (GPS) stations, are employed as the desired IWV estimates. The model is evaluated using one-year water vapor data at additional 114 GPS stations and 97 radiosonde stations from June 1, 2019 to May 31, 2020 in China and its surrounding regions. The results show that the BPNN-based calibration model reduces the root-mean-square error (RMSE) of official OLCI NIR all-weather IWV products by 24.52% from 3.10 to 2.34 mm for Sentinel-3A and by 25.00% from 3.44 to 2.58 mm for Sentinel-3B, when compared with in situ GPS-observed reference IWV. When compared with in situ radiosonde-observed IWV, the RMSE reduces 21.01% from 4.57 to 3.61 mm and 20.81% from 5.19 to 4.11 mm for Sentinel-3A and Sentinel-3B, respectively.

Comparison of iCOR and Rayleigh atmospheric correction methods on Sentinel-3 OLCI images for a shallow eutrophic reservoir.

Remote sensing of inland waters is challenging, but also important, due to the need to monitor the ever-increasing harmful algal blooms (HABs), which have serious effects on water quality. The Ocean and Land Color Instrument (OLCI) of the Sentinel-3 satellites program is capable of providing images for the monitoring of such waters. Atmospheric correction is a necessary process in order to retrieve the desired surface-leaving radiance signal and several atmospheric correction methods have been developed through the years. However, many of these correction methods require programming language skills, or function as commercial software plugins, limiting their possibility of use by end users. Accordingly, in this study, the free SNAP software provided by the European Space Agency (ESA) was used to evaluate the possible differences between a partial atmospheric correction method accounting for Rayleigh scattering and a full atmospheric correction method (iCOR), applied on Sentinel-3 OLCI images of a shallow, highly eutrophic water reservoir. For the complete evaluation of the two methods, in addition to the comparison of the band reflectance values, chlorophyll (CHL) and cyanobacteria (CI) indices were also calculated and their values were intercompared. The results showed, that although the absolute values between the two correction methods did not coincide, there was a very good correlation between the two methods for both bands' reflectance (r>0.73) and the CHL and CI indices values (r>0.95). Therefore, since iCOR correction image processing time is 25 times longer than Rayleigh correction, it is proposed that the Rayleigh partial correction method may be alternatively used for seasonal water monitoring, especially in cases of long time-series, enhancing time and resources use efficiency. Further comparisons of the two methods in other inland water bodies and evaluation with in situ chlorophyll and cyanobacteria measurements will enhance the applicability of the methodology.

Seasonal dynamics of dissolved organic matter in the Mackenzie Delta, Canadian Arctic waters: Implications for ocean colour remote sensing

Increasing air temperatures and associated permafrost thaw in Arctic river watersheds, such as the Mackenzie River catchment, are directly affecting the aquatic environment. As a consequence, the quantity and the quality of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) that is transported via the Mackenzie River into the Arctic Ocean is expected to change. Particularly in these remote permafrost regions of the Arctic, monitoring of terrigenous organic carbon fluxes is insufficient and knowledge of distribution and fate of organic carbon when released to the coastal waters is remarkably lacking. Despite its poorly evaluated performance in Arctic coastal waters, Satellite Ocean Colour Remote Sensing (SOCRS) remains a powerful tool to complement monitoring of land-ocean DOC fluxes, detect their trends, and help in understanding their propagation in the Arctic Ocean.In this study, we use in situ and SOCRS data to show the strong seasonal dynamics of the Mackenzie River plume and the spatial distribution of associated terrigenous DOC on the Beaufort Sea Shelf for the first time. Using a dataset collected during an extensive field campaign in 2019, the performance of three commonly-used atmospheric correction (AC) algorithms and two available colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM) retrieval algorithms were evaluated using the Ocean and Land Colour Instrument (OLCI). Our results showed that in optically-complex Arctic coastal waters the Polymer AC algorithm performed the best. For the retrieval of CDOM, the gsmA algorithm (Mean Percentage Error (MPE) = 35.7%) showed slightly more consistent results compared to the ONNS algorithm (MPE = 37.9%). By merging our measurements with published datasets, the newly-established DOC-CDOM relationship for the Mackenzie-Beaufort Sea region allowed estimations of DOC concentrations from SOCRS across the entire fluvial-marine transition zone with an MPE of 20.5%. Finally, we applied SOCRS with data from the Sentinel-3 OLCI sensor to illustrate the seasonal variation of DOC concentrations in the surface waters of the Beaufort Sea on a large spatial scales and high frequency throughout the entire open water period. Highest DOC concentrations and largest lateral extent of the plume were observed in spring right after the Mackenzie River ice break-up indicating that the freshet was the main driver of plume propagation and DOC distribution on the shelf. Satellite-derived images of surface water DOC concentration placed the in situ observations into a larger temporal and spatial context and revealed a strong seasonal variability in transport pathways of DOC in the Mackenzie- Beaufort Sea region.

Deriving Nutrient Concentrations from Sentinel-3 OLCI Data in North-Eastern Baltic Sea

Nutrients are important elements in marine ecosystems and water quality, and have a major role in the eutrophication of water bodies. Monitoring nutrient loads is especially important for the Baltic Sea, which is especially sensitive to the eutrophication. Using optical remote sensing data in mapping total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) is challenging because these substances do not have a direct influence on the water optics that remote sensing sensors can detect. On the other hand, it would be very rewarding. In this study, more than 25,000 Sentinel-3 Ocean and Land Colour Instrument (OLCI) data algorithms were tested in order to detect the TN and TP concentrations in the Estonian marine waters between 2016–2021. The TN estimations were well derived for Estonian marine waters (R2 = 0.73, RMSE = 4.87 µmolN L−1, MAPE = 14%, n = 708), while the TP estimations were weaker (R2 = 0.38, RMSE = 0.23 µmolP L−1, MAPE = 24%, n = 730). The Estonian marine waters were divided into six geographic regions in order to study the effect of regional water quality on the TN and TP retrievals. The nutrient concentrations were derived in every region when spring and summer periods were treated separately. In this study, the detection of both nutrients was more successful in more closed areas with P deficiency, while in open sea areas it was more challenging. This study shows that it is possible to estimate nutrients, especially TN, from remote sensing data. Consequently, remote sensing could provide a reliable support to the conventional monitoring by covering large marine areas with high temporal and spatial resolution data.

A semianalytical algorithm for estimating particulate composition in inland waters based on Sentinel-3 OLCI images

The composition of suspended particles is a key factor in determining the underwater light field, which is of great significance for understanding the variability in the optical properties of water bodies. In this study, the ratio of the phytoplankton absorption coefficient to the backscattering coefficient at wavelength of 681 nm (aph(681)/bb(681)) was found to be an optimal optical indicator of the ratio of chlorophyll-a to the total suspended matter concentration (Chla/TSM), a parameter indicating the particulate composition. Therefore, a semianalytical algorithm was proposed to estimate Chla/TSM from remote sensing reflectance (Rrs(λ)) at 681 nm and 754 nm on Sentinel-3 Ocean and Land Color Instrument (OLCI) images. The validation dataset collected from 11 inland lakes and 3 reservoirs in China and 2 inland lakes in America was used to evaluate the algorithm’s performance. The evaluation results demonstrated that the proposed algorithm could have favorable performance in inland waters. Furthermore, comparison with two other state-of-the-art algorithms (Sun_13 and NTD675) showed that this proposed algorithm had higher estimation accuracy, with an overall winning rate (OWR) of 60%, an unbiased mean absolute percentage error (UMAPE) reduction from 72.95% to 46.44%, a root mean square error (RMSE) decline from 1.42 µg/mg to 0.83 µg/mg and a normalized root mean square error (NRMSE) decline from 11.36% to 6.62%. This algorithm was successfully applied to acquire the Chla/TSM tempo-spatial variation using the OLCI images of Lake Taihu from 2016 to 2019. It was found that the algorithm developed based on OLCI images can be applied to satellite sensors with similar bands, such as Medium-Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MERIS), and Sentinel-2 multispectral instrument (MSI), etc. As a simple and effective algorithm, the proposed algorithm has the potential to monitor changes in Chla/TSM in inland waters on a global scale.

INTERCOMPARISON OF DESIS, SENTINEL-2 (MSI) AND SENTINEL-3 (OLCI) DATA FOR WATER COLOUR APPLICATIONS

Abstract. In this work, we investigate the potential of DESIS hyperspectral data for water colour applications as preparation for the exploitation of data from the future EnMAP mission. We show results on the intercomparison of Level 2 data of the DESIS sensor, Sentinel-2 MultiSpectral Instrument (S2-MSI) and Sentinel-3 Ocean and Land Colour Instrument (S3-OLCI) processed with the Polymer atmospheric correction. Examples of mapping of water quality parameters in inland and coastal waters is provided for different ecosystems (e.g. lagoon, clear lakes, estuaries). First results of Polymer applied to DESIS data at different study regions show similar spatial distribution of chlorophyll-a concentration (Chl-a) to S2-MSI and S3-OLCI.

Evaluation of trophic state for inland waters through combining Forel-Ule Index and inherent optical properties

Eutrophication is a severe environmental pollution problem for inland waters and poses significant threats to the water safety. Monitoring trophic state of inland waters using optical remote sensing generally requires the inversion of water quality parameters, such as chlorophyll-a, secchi depth, etc. However, the accurate inversion of these individual indicators remains challenging, while the associated retrieval errors can propagate and degrade the evaluation of trophic state. Hence, we proposed a novel monitoring method by developing a Trophic State Index (TSI) based on optical remote-sensing parameters, i.e., Forel-Ule index (FUI) and non-water absorption coefficient at 674 nm (referred to as at−w(674)) retrieved from Sentinel-3 Ocean and Land Color Instrument (OLCI) imagery. The estimated TSI showed favorable correspondence with observed water quality data, including coefficient of determination (r2 = 0.91), root mean squared error (RMSE = 5.54), and mean absolute percentage error (MAPE = 10.69%). Using the Sentinel-3 OLCI data, the proposed method also had very good performance in the field spectrum (MAPE = 5.25 % , RMSE = 3.36). The monthly trophic state evaluation also showed congruence (MAPE = 12.51 % , RMSE = 6.41) with surface water quality monthly report (SWQMR) from the Ministry of Environment and Ecology of the People's Republic of China. The monthly TSI showed favorable agreement for 23 ungauged lakes (RMSE = 7.26, MAPE = 12.78%), indicating potential utility for regional lake water quality monitoring. The proposed method was then applied to 47 other large (>50 km2) water bodies in the Middle-and-Lower watershed of Yangtze River and the Huaihe watershed to evaluate the spatial and temporal variation of trophic state from 2016 to 2020. The TSI results revealed several lakes, such as Lake Honghu and Lake Luoma, with rapidly deteriorating water quality during the study period, while other lakes show relative improvement (e.g., Xiashan Reservoir), indicating unbalanced environmental pressure over the region. Overall, this study showed promising performance and potential for satellite-based monitoring of regional aquatic environments.

The First Validation of Sentinel-3 OLCI Integrated Water Vapor Products Using Reference GPS Data in Mainland China

The integrated water vapor (IWV) products collected from June 1, 2019 to May 31, 2020 from the ocean and land color instrument (OLCI) sensor, onboard the Sentinel-3 satellites, are evaluated against reference water vapor data estimated from ground-based 214 global positioning system (GPS) stations in the Mainland China. This is the first time to thoroughly evaluate the quality of Sentinel-3 OLCI IWV products by <italic xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">in situ</i> GPS-measured IWV data from such a large spatial coverage as China. The validation results show that, under cloud-free conditions, the OLCI IWV measurements agree very well with the ground-based GPS water vapor data, with a root-mean-square error (RMSE) of 3.03 mm for Sentinel-3A satellite and 3.13 mm for Sentinel-3B satellite. The dependence of OLCI IWV on various parameters was also analyzed. Analysis showed that the accuracy of inland OLCI IWV products was superior to that in coastal areas and that OLCI tended to overestimate IWV value in lower elevation and underestimate IWV value in higher elevation. The accuracy of OLCI IWV measurements increased as IWV decreased. Solar zenith angle analysis showed that the OLCI IWV product had a higher accuracy at a larger solar zenith angle. In spring and winter, the OLCI IWV observations had higher accuracy than those in summer and autumn. OLCI IWV tended to underestimate IWV value in most land cover types. Except for the polar climatic zone, the Sentinel-3 OLCI IWV products tended to overestimate IWV value. The validation results against previous studies were also discussed in this work.

Evaluation of Ocean Color Atmospheric Correction Methods for Sentinel-3 OLCI Using Global Automatic In Situ Observations

The Ocean and Land Color Instrument (OLCI) on Sentinel-3 is one of the most advanced ocean color satellite sensors for aquatic environment monitoring. However, limited studies have been focused on a comprehensive assessment of atmospheric correction (AC) methods for OLCI. In an attempt to fill the gap, this study evaluated seven different AC methods for OLCI using global automatic <italic xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">in situ</i> observations from Aerosol Robotic Network-Ocean Color (AERONET-OC). Results showed that the POLYnomial-based algorithm applied to MERIS (POLYMER) had the best performance for bands with wavelength ≤ 443 nm, and the SeaDAS method based on 779 and 865 nm was the best for longer spectral bands; however, SeaDAS (SeaWiFS Data Analysis System) processing algorithm based on 779 and 1020 nm, as well as 865 and 1020 nm, obtained degraded AC performance; Case 2 Regional CoastColor (C2RCC) also produced large uncertainties; Baseline AC (BAC) method might be better than SeaDAS method; and simple subtraction method was the worst except for turbid waters. POLYMER and C2RCC underestimated high remote sensing reflectance (Rrs) at red and green bands; SeaDAS method based on 779 and 865 nm held an advantage for clear waters over the other two band combinations, while their difference turned small for turbid waters. AC uncertainties generally impacted the performance of chlorophyll retrievals. POLYMER outperformed other methods for chlorophyll retrieval. This study provides a good reference for selecting a suitable AC method for aquatic environment monitoring with Sentinel-3 OLCI.

Statistical Evaluation of Sentinel-3 OLCI Ocean Color Data Retrievals

We employ a previously developed statistical method to evaluate the performance of the Sentinel-3 OLCI (Ocean and Land Colour Instrument) global ocean color data relying on the temporal stability of the retrievals. We analyze the normalized water-leaving reflectance ρ <italic xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">wN</i> (λ) spectra generated by the Multi-Sensor Level-1 to Level-2 (MSL12) ocean color data processing system from the OLCI measurements, as well as EUMETSAT-IPF-OL-2 OLCI reflectance ρ <italic xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">wN</i> (λ) spectra. The deviations in ρ <italic xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">wN</i> (λ) spectra from temporally and spatially averaged baseline data are statistically evaluated corresponding to various parameters, including the solar-sensor geometry, various ancillary data (i.e., surface wind speed, sea-level atmospheric pressure, water vapor amount, and ozone concentration), and other related parameters. Our results show that, under most conditions, both NOAA-MSL12 and EUMETSAT-IPF-OL-2 data processing systems produce statistically consistent ocean color products in the open ocean with respect to all corresponding parameters analyzed, but with some underestimates of ρ <italic xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">wN</i> (λ) spectra by EUMETSAT retrievals in moderate sun glint conditions being the notable exception.

Evaluation of OLCI Neural Network Radiometric Water Products

Radiometric water products from the neural network (NNv2) in the alternative atmospheric correction (AAC) processing chain of Ocean and Land Colour Instrument (OLCI) data were assessed over different marine regions. These products, not included among the operational ones, were custom-produced from Copernicus Sentinel-3 OLCI Baseline Collection 3. The assessment benefitted of <italic xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">in situ</i> reference data from the Ocean Color component of the Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET-OC) from sites representative of different water types. These included clear waters in the Western Mediterranean Sea, optically complex waters characterized by varying concentrations of total suspended matter and chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM) in the northern Adriatic Sea, and optically complex waters characterized by very high concentrations of CDOM in the Baltic Sea. The comparison of the water-leaving radiances <inline-formula xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"> <tex-math notation="LaTeX">$L_{\text {WN}}(\lambda)$ </tex-math></inline-formula> derived from OLCI data on board Sentinel-3A and Sentinel-3B with those from AERONET-OC confirmed consistency between the products from the two satellite sensors. However, the accuracy of satellite data products exhibited dependence on the water type. A general underestimate of <inline-formula xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"> <tex-math notation="LaTeX">${L}_{\text {WN}}(\lambda)$ </tex-math></inline-formula> was observed for clear waters. Conversely, overestimates were observed for data products from optically complex waters with the worst results obtained for CDOM-dominated waters. These findings suggest caution in exploiting NNv2 radiometric products, especially for highly absorbing and clear waters.

Chlorophyll-a concentration inversion based on the modified Quasi-Analytical Algorithm and Sentinel-3 OLCI in Daihai Lake, China

Abstract The Quasi-Analytical Algorithm (QAA) is effective in retrieving water inherent optical properties (IOPs) from remote sensing spectral reflectance and has wider applications in studies of the open ocean and coastal waters than of inland waters. This research aimed to modify the QAA model based on measured field spectral reflectance and absorption coefficients to render it applicable to studies of Daihai Lake, China. The improvements mainly included the reference wavelength selection, the power index of the particle backscattering coefficient and the exponential slope of the absorption coefficient of the colored detrital matter estimation. The average relative error between the inverse and measured absorption coefficients was less than 20%. A linear model was established between the phytoplankton absorption coefficient at a wavelength of 674 nm (aph(674)) and the chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) concentration, with a determination coefficient of 0.88. Additionally, the modified Quasi-Analytical Algorithm (MQAA) model was applied to the Ocean and Land Color Instrument (OLCI) data aboard the Sentinel-3 satellite. Finally, a spatial distribution map for the Chl-a concentrations in Daihai Lake on August 10, 2017, was drawn and the mid-eutrophication area was found to occur in the north and border.

Comparison of In-Situ Chlorophyll-a Time Series and Sentinel-3 Ocean and Land Color Instrument Data in Slovenian National Waters (Gulf of Trieste, Adriatic Sea)

While satellite remote sensing of ocean color is a viable tool for estimating large-scale patterns of chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) and global ocean primary production, its application in coastal waters is limited by the complex optical properties. An exploratory study was conducted in the Gulf of Trieste (Adriatic Sea) to assess the usefulness of Sentinel-3 satellite data in the Slovenian national waters. OLCI (Ocean and Land Colour Instrument) Chl-a level 2 products (OC4Me and NN) were compared to monthly Chl-a in-situ measurements at fixed sites from 2017 to 2019. In addition, eight other methods for estimating Chl-a concentration based on reflectance in different spectral bands were tested (OC3M, OC4E, MedOC4, ADOC4, AD4, 3B-OLCI, 2B-OLCI and G2B). For some of these methods, calibration was performed on in-situ data to achieve a better agreement. Finally, L1-regularized regression and random forest were trained on the available dataset to test the capabilities of the machine learning approach. The results show rather poor performance of the two originally available products. The same is true for the other eight methods and the fits to the measured values also show only marginal improvement. The best results are obtained with the blue-green methods (OC3, OC4 and AD4), especially the AD4SI (a designated fit of AD4) with R = 0.56 and RMSE = 0.4 mg/m³, while the near infrared (NIR) methods show underwhelming performance. The machine learning approach can only explain 30% of the variability and the RMSE is of the same order as for the blue-green methods. We conclude that due to the low Chl-a concentration and the moderate turbidity of the seawater, the reflectance provided by the Sentinel-3 OLCI spectrometer carries little information about Chl-a in the Slovenian national waters within the Gulf of Trieste and is therefore of limited use for our purposes. This requires that we continue to improve satellite products for use in those marine waters that have not yet proven suitable. In this way, satellite data could be effectively integrated into a comprehensive network that would allow a reliable assessment of ecological status, taking into account environmental regulations.

Retrieving and Validating Leaf and Canopy Chlorophyll Content at Moderate Resolution: A Multiscale Analysis with the Sentinel-3 OLCI Sensor.

ESA’s Eighth Earth Explorer mission “FLuorescence EXplorer” (FLEX) will be dedicated to the global monitoring of the chlorophyll fluorescence emitted by vegetation. In order to properly interpret the measured fluorescence signal, essential vegetation variables need to be retrieved concomitantly. FLEX will fly in tandem formation with Sentinel-3 (S3), which conveys the Ocean and Land Color Instrument (OLCI) that is designed to characterize the atmosphere and the terrestrial vegetation at a spatial resolution of 300 m. In support of FLEX’s preparatory activities, this paper presents a first validation exercise of OLCI vegetation products against in situ data coming from the 2018 FLEXSense campaign. During this campaign, leaf chlorophyll content (LCC) and leaf area index (LAI) measurements were collected over croplands, while HyPlant DUAL images of the area were acquired at a 3 m spatial resolution. A multiscale validation strategy was pursued. First, estimates of these two variables, together with the combined canopy chlorophyll content (CCC = LCC × LAI), were obtained at the HyPlant spatial resolution and were compared against the in situ measurements. Second, the fine-scale retrieval maps from HyPlant were coarsened to the S3 spatial scale as a reference to assess the quality of the OLCI vegetation products. As an intermediary step, vegetation products extracted from Sentinel-2 data were used to compare retrievals at the in-between spatial resolution of 20 m. For all spatial scales, CCC delivered the most accurate estimates with the smallest prediction error obtained at the 300 m resolution (R2 of 0.74 and RMSE = 26.8 μg cm-2). Results of a scaling analysis suggest that CCC performs well at the different tested spatial resolutions since it presents a linear behavior across scales. LCC, on the other hand, was poorly retrieved at the 300 m scale, showing overestimated values over heterogeneous pixels. The introduction of a new LCC model integrating mixed reflectance spectra in its training enabled to improve by 16% the retrieval accuracy for this variable (RMSE = 10 μg cm–2 for the new model versus RMSE = 11.9 μg cm-2 for the former model).
