THE ABILITY OF THE 2022/2023 ACADEMIC YEARS STUDENTS OF ENGLISH STUDY PROGRAM, ISLAMIC UNIVERSITY OF INDRAGIRI IN IDENTIFIYING BETWEEN TRANSITIVE AND INTRANSITIVE VERBS IN A SENTENCE

This research was intended to find out the student’s ability in identifiying transitive and intransitive verbs in a sentence. The method used in this research was the descriptive quantitative research. The population of this research was the students of Islamic University of Indragiri. The sample of this research were 21 students at the first semester of English Study Program, Islamic University of Indragiri in the academic 2022/2023 years. In collecting the data, this research used written test (essay) as the research instrument to use to find out the students’ ability in identifiying transitive and intransitive verbs in a sentence. The students were asked to undeline whether transitive and intransitive verbs in a sentence. The total mean score was taken from two indicators, that were transitive verb with mean score 65.8 in a good level and intransitive verb with mean score 55.93 in an enough level. Based on the result of data, for both of indicators, their ability in identifiying transitive and intransitive verbs in a sentence were 59.58 in an enough level. In conclution, from the total mean score 50% the students can identify transitive and intransitive verbs in a sentence, but their ability in identifiying an intransitive verb was still limited.

Exploring Oral Presentation Performance: Level of Mastery and Common Problems of EFL Students from Selected University

This study aims to explore the EFL students’ performance in oral presentation by categorize their level of mastery, and to reveal if there are any common problems during the performance. This descriptive quantitative study purposively invited 24 students as the samples from the third semester of English Study Program at Timor University. The data were based on students’ performance on 10 selected texts which recorded to measure their oral presentation after an internal workshop. The analysis and the scoring were based on Harris’ (1969) five components in scoring speaking and with Brown’s (2004) six oral proficiency scoring categories. However, this study focusing only on the pronunciation and fluency categories to be in line with the scoring rubric of competence in the 2021 Academic Regulation of Timor University. The results showed that the students have mastered the oral presentation because their average score is 82 based their right answer is 144/150. This average scores then analysed using the Academic Regulation of Timor University (2021) showing the majority of the students is categorized excellent (19 out of 26 students). Nevertheless, two major problems in common this study manage to reveals were mispronounced/wrong pronunciation (13%) and lack of fluency (5%). The result implies that these two common problems should be put in attention during the process of learning oral performance i.e., English presentation in public. Further studies are suggested to investigate the impact of practice in improving students’ oral presentations through specific workshop.

Correlation of Attitudes and Perceptions in Intermediate Reading Class Students, University of Muhammadiyah Palembang

The enthusiasm toward reading happens as a result of good reading attitude is known as the attitude of reading. Students' reading attitudes are strongly related to their ability to be achieved by practice. The purpose of this study was to find out the correlations between students’ attitude and perception of reading in intermediate reading class. The participants were twenty-three students in the second semester of English study program, University of Muhammadiyah Palembang. The sample was taken by using purposive sampling of the even semester class in the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education. Coefficient correlation was adopted in this study. It is also intended to see if there any significant correlation between reading habits and reading perception of intermediate reading class students. The data was acquired through the use of Elementary Reading Attitude Survey (ERAS) that was established by McKenna and Kear (1990) in order to measure students’ reading attitude. An informal interview was also conducted by the researcher to acquire additional information about students' perceptions to reading. The results of this study revealed that there is moderate correlation between students' attitudes and perceptions of reading with the correlation value are 0.48. Thus, students must keep practicing and improving reading comprehension.

STUDENTS’ PERCEPTION ON ONLINE LEARNING CLASS DURING COVID 19 PANDEMIC

The purpose of this study was to find out the students’ perception on online learning class during covid 19 pandemic. Sample of this study were 16 students of the third semesterand the fifth semester of English Study Program at Islamic University of Indragiri. The research method used in this study was a descriptiveresearch. Researchers gave questionnaire and interview about student’s perception on online learning class during covid 19 pandemicto collect the data. After the data has been collected, it was found that the data from questionnaire shown that the percentage is 52,97 %, it can be written that the students’ perception on learning online class during covid 19 pandemic wasNeutral, because 52,97% was in range 60%-79,99%. This finding means that the students do not refuse learning online classduring covid 19 pandemic but also do not accept as whole since some obstacles they faced during online class. The poor connection and less of interaction made most of the learners did not have deep understanding of the material as in offline class.

STUDENTS’ PERCEPTION ON GOOGLE MEET VIDEO CONFERENCING PLATFORM DURING ENGLISH SPEAKING CLASS IN PANDEMIC ERA

The aim of the research was to investigate students’ perception while teaching learning process in 16 meeting by having google meet video conferencing. Method of the research used qualitative research by focusing at descriptive analysis to explore students’ perception in English speaking class as it was followed by 13 English students at the second semester of English study program of STKIP Setia Budhi Rangkasbitung who join speaking lesson. Instruments used were observation, questionnaire, and interview. The results of the research about students’ perception emphasized on interaction, teaching learning process, psychological aspects, and speaking skills. The researcher found that interaction showed that there were three patterns of interaction, they were interaction lecturer-students, students-lecturer, and students-students interaction. The three interactions happened well since the number of them was 100% and all students were involved in speaking activity. Teaching learning process was done as usual like in a real classroom such as pre-activity, main activity, and post-activity. In the form of psychological aspects, students were happy, secure, confident, and brave. Data showed 100%, it meant that they did not have any barriers during English speaking class with google meet video conference. Speaking skills in the form of pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar, fluency, and comprehension. Students kept having their right to learn about those aspects supported by the teacher in google meet. When students did some mistakes, lecturer explained directly in general at the end of class and this way was very helpful for students in learning speaking. From these findings, the conclusion was the usage of google meet video conferencing in the speaking class showed positive respond that students’ perception on google meet showed mostly perceive the advantages rather than disadvantages of google meet video conferencing provided.

THE CORRELATION BETWEEN STUDENTS’ WRITING ATTITUDE AND COMPOSITION PERFORMANCE

The main objectives of this study were to find out (1) whether student’ writing attitude correlates with their composition performance (2) whether the factors of writing attitude correlate with their composition performance, (3) whether students’ writing attitude give contribution to the value of their writing composition and (4) whether the factors of students’ writing attitude give contribution to their composition performance. The population and sample of the study covered one hundred and fifty-six students of six semester of English Study Program. The data were obtained giving a questionnaire and composition writing test. The data collected from were analyzed by using regression analysis and hypothesizes were tested by using F-test. The results show that there were significant correlation between the student writing attitude (total) and their composition performance. (R =.242 and R²=.058). Out of the five factors of student writing attitude, there were three factors which had a significant statistical relationship with the student composition performance. They were writing perception (R= .220 and R²= .049), positive writing activities (R= .176 and R²=.031), and reading preferences (R= .193 and R²= .037). The first factor, writing perception give much contribution to the sub scales of composition performance. Furthermore, the unhypothesized findings showed that gender and writing attitude were correlated significantly in composition performance since the mean value was balanced between male and female students. However, based on the mean value, male group has better writing attitude while female group has better composition performance. Finally, the results of this research are hopefully beneficial for the English teaching and learning processes, such as writing skills. Student’s writing attitude should be considered since students may have different attitude toward writing that can affect their performance in writing.

ENHANCHING STUDENTS’ WRITING SKILL THROUGH MALL: WHATSAPP MESSAGES IN TEACHING WRITING

Mobile technologies offer numerous practical uses in language learning. The objective of this study to investigate whether or not the application of whatsapp group could improve students’ English writing achievement. The participant of this study were the second semester of English study program that consisted of 40 students. Quasi – Experimental design was applied in this study. In collecting the data, written test is given to sample. The result of data analysis showed that the students got better improvement in English writing ability after being treated by using Whatsapp Group Discussion. It based on the result of independent t-test whereas the t obtain was 5.298 and the significant level 0.00. Futhermore, it can be concluded that there was a significant difference between the student who were taught by using whatsapp group discussion and those who were not. In other words, Whatsapp group is a good teaching media and strategy in increasing students’ writing achievement. Therefore, it can be said that MALL is an appropriate teaching strategy in teaching writing for EFL students.

Speaking Activities Used in English Community of English Study Program in Enhancing Students’ Speaking Skill

Abstract: Speaking skill is the skill that makes us communicate to each other effectively. The objectives of this study were (1) to find out the implementation of speaking activities used in English community, (2) to find out the problem of speaking activities. The subject of this study was the fourth semester of English Study Program at IAIN Curup which consisted of 53 students. In this study, the reseachers used descriptive qualitative method by using questionnaire and interview as the encouragement of the data. This study found that the findings of this study, reseachers found that the implementation of speaking activities started with the instruction of the activity, gave the topic, encouraged students with nice activities, and supported with the positive feedback at the end of activity. For the problem, the reseachers found two problems that significant appeared. The problems were inhibition and lack of theme to be spoken.

Students’ Speaking Problem at the Fourth Semester of English Study Program in Sembilanbelas November Kolaka

ABSTRACTThe objectives of this research were to find out the students’ speaking problemsat the fourth semester of English Study Program in Sembilanbelas November University and factors affecting them. This research employed case study with qualitative approach. There were 26 participants at class A of the fourth semester in English Study Program. Those participants were selected through purposive sampling technique. To gain the data interview, observation sheet, and students’ transcript report were used. The result showed that there were four problems that were experienced by students at the class A fourth semester first was inhibition, when speaking the students tend to be worried about making mistake, getting criticism from others, and shyness. The second was lack of ideas; the students tend to be silent participants in speaking due to lack of vocabulary and grammar. The third was low or uneven participation in speaking. Here, only few students participate the speaking activities while other remaining silent. And the last was students got difficulty to speak because of the influencing of mother-tongue use. There were two factors affecting the students’ speaking ability such as internal and external factors. The internal factors here the students have low motivation in speaking while the external factors were the students’ condition in the classroom

Improving the Students’ Speaking Skill Through Snakes and Ladders (Sl) on Second Semester Students of English Study Program at Stain Bengkalis

The aim of the research was to describe the learning atmosphere during the implementation of “Snakes and Ladders” in teaching Speaking. Besides, the research was also designed to know how the improvement of the students’ Speaking skill during the implementation of “Snakes and Ladders”. This research was a classroom action research. The participants of this research were 27 second semester students of English Study Program at STAIN Bengkalis. This research was conducted in two cycles by following the procedure of action research, i.e. planning, implementing, observing, and reflecting. In collecting the data, the researcher used observation, questionnaire, and test. The lecturer was the researcher assisted by collaborator as observer. The questionnaire was given to the students before and after the implementation of “Snakes and Ladders”. The tests were in the form of pre-test, post-test 1 and post-test 2. The data were analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively. The qualitative data were analyzed using Interactive Model of Data Analysis as propounded by Matthew M. Miles and A.M. Huberman. The results of the research showed that the learning atmosphere also improved. The class became more active and confident. Furthermore, “Snakes and Ladders” was able to improve the students’ Speaking Skill. It was proven by the increase of the students’ mean score from 41.16 in pre-test to 46.21 in cycle 1, and 48.98 in cycle 2, although the results of the research were just a little bit improvement. It could be concluded that the use of “Snakes and Ladders” has proven to be an effective way in teaching-learning of Speaking Skill on Second Semester of English Study Program at STAIN Bengkalis.

EXPLORING ENGLISH FOREIGN LANGUAGE STUDENTS’ LEARNING STRATEGIES IN READING ELT MATERIALS

This research aimed to reveal the type of language learning strategies dominantly used by the learners and the least type of learning strategies used by the learners. There were 10 students who were taken as the sample of participants. They are students who officially enrolled in Academic Reading Class in the second semester of English Study Program of Teacher Training and Education Faculty (FKIP) Tanjungpura University in Academic Year 2016/2017. Questionnaire consisting of 40 statements was distributed for data collection which in turn were analyzed by using mean score calculation. The analysis of the data revealed that the mean score of metacognitive learning style was 4.0 which indicated that this type of learning strategy fell into the highest frequency used by the students. Meanwhile, the average score for cognitive strategies was 3.7 in which it is categorized as the second rank of the learning strategy mostly used by the learners. The analysis toward compensation strategy resulted 3.5 for the mean score, and the average score for affective and social strategy reached average at 3.1 and 3.0 respectively. By contrast, memory strategy is the least type of learning strategy used by the students, reaching the mean only at 2,9.Keywords: EFL, Language Learning Strategies, Reading, ELT Materials

STUDENTS’ OPINIONS TOWARD WRITING ACTIVITIES

Problem in this research is how is students’ opinions toward writing activities. This research is a qualitative research. The subject of the research is First semester consisted of 21 students who pragrammed Basic Writing subject in English Study Program at Dayanu Ikhsanuddin University, academic year 2019-2020. The instrument used in this research is questionairre about students’ opinion toward writing activities. The test consisted of 10 numbers with 5 optional degree of feeling, are: Strongly Agree (5), Agree (4), Neither Agree nor Disagree (3), Disagree (2) and Strongly Disagree (1). Data analysis uses the percentage formula as the frequency is divided by the number of the students, then the total number of the percentage is multiplied by 100% (Sugiyono,2010 in Husain, 2012).1 The research outcomes is majority students at the first semester of English Study Program, Teaching Training and Education Faculty, Dayanu Ikhsanuddin University, academic year 2019/2020 presented their positive opinion and responses toward writing activities.

STUDENTS' SELF-DIRECTED LEARNING IN LISTENING CLASS

the purpose of this research is to know the level of students’ self-directed learning at the second semester of English Study program of Islamic University of Indragiri. It is achieved by conducting a quantitative study. Questionnaire was distributed to 23 students to get the result of the research. The questionnaire was using Guttmann Scale. The result of this questionnaire revealed that students’ self-directed learning in listening class relies on low level.

ANALYSIS ON THE STUDENTS’ COMMON DIFFICULTIES IN TOEFL READING COMPREHENSION (A CASE STUDY ON THE SECOND SEMESTER OF ENGLISH STUDY PROGRAM AT ISLAMIC UNIVERSITY OF INDRAGIRI TEMBILAHAN)

The problem in this study was the students’ common difficulties in TOEFL Reading Comprehension. This study only used one variable. The research method used in this study was a descriptive research. The purpose of this study was to know the students’ common difficulties in TOEFL Reading Comprehension on the second semester of English Study Program at Islamic University of Indragiri Tembilahan. The total of the sample used in this study were 23 students, the technique was used to take the sample is total sampling. In collecting the data, the researcher used a test. After the data has been collected, the result of test showed that the skills that are considered to be the most difficult ones in TOEFL reading, which is skill 3. This skill is identifying stated detail questions correctly. It is the highest percentage (84%) with the total of incorrect answer is 210 from 5 items. Then, it is followed by skill 5 (82%) with the total of incorrect answer is 82 from 2 items, which is finding pronoun reference. It is the second most difficult skill for the students. The third most difficult skill is skill 7. It is responding of transition question achieve 81% with the total of incorrect answers is 81 from 2 items. Next, skill 10 is considered to be the fourth most difficult skill in TOEFL reading comprehension. The questions are about the use of context to give meaning of difficult word which is counted 80 % from the total of incorrect answers is 120 from 3 items. Then, the fifth most difficult skill in TOEFL reading comprehension is skill 1, which is consisting the questions about answering main idea questions correctly, students made 78% of the total incorrect answers is 156 from 4 items.

ENHANCING STUDENT’S MOTIVATION IN LEARNING READING COMPREHENSION

The objective of this research is to know the student’s motivated in learning reading comprehension. This research employed descriptive quantitative. The population of this research was the third semester of English Study Program in STAIN Watampone. This research used cluster random sampling. The sample of this research was 25 students. The data were collected by questionnaire. The result of the data showed that the students’ motivation in learning reading comprehension is 87.14 and it is categorized as strongly motivated. Therefore, it can be stated that motivation is one of the most essential factors that has a direct impact on the enhancing of reading comprehension, but the teachers need to know that the students are motivated differently.

Identifying Students’ Error in Writing Islamic Text at the Third Semester of English Study Program at IAIN Bone

This research aimed to find out the most common errors do the students made in their writing Islamic text at the third semester of English Study program IAIN Bone in Academic Years 2018-2019. The data were collected from the students’ writing of the third semester. The key instrument used was writing test result and interview. This research used descriptive research. It refers to the descriptive qualitative. Qualitative data described each category that occurred in the students’ writing. The researcher described the situation about the occurrence of the errors in the students’ writing. The total number of lexical errors that the researcher found in the students’ writing Islamic text was 150 errors that consisted of lexicon category was 68 errors and surface strategy was 82 errors. Most of the students’ errors in the lexical category were sentence pattern. Sentence pattern is the highest errors made by the students in writing Islamic text with 10 students or 62.50% made errors; the second was punctuation and article by 5 students or 31.25%; the third errors in spelling by 4 students or 25%; the fourth errors in vocabulary and preposition by 3 students or 18.75%; the last errors in tense, pronoun, and conjunction by 1 student or 6.25%. It is figured out that the students have less ability in writing a text and still have difficulties in learning grammatical structures in writing process.

FACTORS INFLUENCING STUDENTS’ LISTENING COMPREHENSION AT THE FOURTH SEMESTER ENGLISH STUDY PROGRAM OF UNISI TEMBILAHAN

This research was done because the researchers found that most of the students' listening comprehension of the fourth semester was low. Therefore, the researchers decided to conduct research about factors that causing it. So that the researchers want to find out students' listening comprehension factors at English study program of UNISI. This aim was achieved through a descriptive qualitative design. The sample of this research was the students of the fourth semester of English Study Program of UNISI. They consist of 13 students. They were chosen by using total sampling technique. By conducting this research, the researcher found that there are three factors influencing students’ listening comprehension at the fourth semester of English Study Program of UNISI, they are reduced form, colloquial language and rate of the delivery. It can be interpreted that their low result in listening to English monologue text was because of those factors.

Classroom Interaction Patterns in EFL Task- Based Classroom

The research was conducted to find out the interaction pattern that emerged when lecturer used Task-Based Instruction in EFL (English as a Foreign Language) classroom at the third semester of English Study Program of Sekolah Tinggi Keguruan and Ilmu Pendidikan Muhammadiyah Kotabumi-Lampung. Researcher used third semester of speaking class students as the participants. The data was taken by using three instruments which were classroom observation, questionnaire and interview. The research was qualitative research. The result of this study revealed a conclusion. There were two kinds of interaction in the classroom during the use of Task-Based Instruction. The interactions that emerged were student-lecturer interaction and student-student interaction. The finding of this research can be beneficial as suggestions in two following area; theoretical and practical. In the theoretical area, this research can be useful for enriching the existing theory of classroom interaction, especially for teaching English as Foreign Language in Indonesia. On practical area, this research can be useful for lecturer to broaden the understanding toward classroom interaction and researcher for further research on classroom interaction.

AN ANALYSIS OF TRANSITION SIGNALS IN DISCUSSION TEXTS WRITTEN BY THE SIXTH SEMESTER STUDENTS OF THE ENGLISH STUDY PROGRAM OF UNDANA IN ACADEMIC YEAR 2016/2017

This research is aimed to identify the types of transition signals used in discussion texts written by the sixth semester students of the English Study Program of UNDANA in academic year 2016/2017, to classify the types of transition signals which are mostly used by students and to analyze the appropriateness of the use of those transition signals in students’ discussion texts. The researcher used descriptive qualitative method in conducting this research and the instrument used in collecting the data was the writing discussion text test. The subjects are forty eight students of the sixth semester of English Study Program of UNDANA in academic year 2016/2017. The result of the data analysis revealed that first, students are used all types of transition signals proposed by Oshima and Hogue. From all of the types, addition is the type of transition signals mostly used by students. Generally, students have good competence in using transition signal appropriate with its function and grammar, however, some transition signals are still used incorrectly.
