In this paper the major technologies of the Semantic Web which may be useful for archives management are summarized. Several local and international projects that generate ontologies from standardized descriptions based on ISAD-G are examined. It is also discussed LIAM (Linked Archival Metadata), that facilitates the transformation of archive records into RFD (Resource Description Framework) format. Furthermore, we analyze how Linked Data enables interoperability between information systems and faceted search of OWL (Ontology Web Language), SKOS (Simple Knowledge Organization System) and Dublin Core records. The authors propose the use of a CMS (Content Management System) compatible with SIOC (Semantically-Interlinked Online Communities) and OAI-PMH (Open Archives Initiative - Protocol for Metadata Harvesting) for archive records to improve the exchange and retrieval of information. We specifically describe the technologies used for developing CoroArchivo, system assessed by an experiment that automatically generates ontologies from ISAD-G records stored in DSpace. The evaluation tool lets users perform federated queries based on the OWL vocabulary disjointness and equivalent classes.

Semantic Web Approach to the GitHub Database Processing

Despitethe vast choice of RDFS (resource description framework schema) vocabularies being published in projects like LOV (Linked Open Vocabularies), there are still areas for which proper ontology has to be developed. GitHub, being both a reliable source of open Git repositories and a social platform, introduces new termsfor which no proper description by means of the Semantic Web has been made yet. This paper regards every aspect of introducing a new set of semantic data: extracting the data, creating or refining the vocabulary, and possible ways to operate on properly integrated data set using SPARQL (SPARQL protocol and RDF query language). Authors of the paper would like to present a methodology of developing a unique RDFS vocabulary. Having this vocabulary, data extracted from GitHub can be described bythe use of new terms as well as those from well-established ontologies, such as SIOC (semantically-interlinked online communities), DOAP (description of a project) or DC (dublin core).

CiTO + SWAN: The web semantics of bibliographic records, citations, evidence and discourse relationships

Most literature searching in biomedicine is now conducted via PubMed, Google Scholar or other web-based bibliographic search mechanisms. Yet until now a public, open, interoperable and complete web-adapted information schema for bibliographic citations, bibliographic references and scientific discourse has not been available. Such a schema, expressed in the form of a description logic compatible with current web semantics approaches, would provide the ability to treat bibliographic references and citations, and rhetorical discourse in scientific publications, as semantic metadata on the web, with all the benefits that implies for organization, search and mash-up of web-based scientific information.In this paper we present CiTO + SWAN, a set of fully harmonized ontology modules resulting from the harmonization of CiTO the Citation Typing Ontology with SWAN Semantic Web Applications in Neuromedicine, which we have developed by jointly adapting and evolving version 1.6 of CiTO, the Citation Typing Ontology, and version 1.2 of the SWAN Scientific Discourse Ontology v1.2. The CiTO + SWAN model is specified in OWL 2 DL, is fully modular, and inherently supports agent-based searching and mash-ups.Through the harmonization activity presented here, and previous work that harmonized SWAN with the SIOC Semantically-Interlinked Online Communities Ontology for describing blogs, wikis and discussion groups, we have construct the basis of a powerful new web framework for scientific communications.

Nexus: sistema para facilitar la difusión de la información en bibliotecas universitarias

With the objective of achieving greater visibility for the research and scholarly contributions generated by members of the university community, the development of a content management system (cms) is proposed that would work with the Semantically-interlinked online communities (Sioc) initiative, managed within the academic library. This enables interoperability between the information systems of the library and the dissemination of information in social networks. Nexus is a tool that facilitates interaction between researchers and academics using microformats and Drupal as a cms. This paper explains the features of the service, its nodes and modules, and the services offered under the philosophy of linked data.

Leveraging social network analysis with topic models and the Semantic Web (extended)

Research in the Semantic Web, especially in modeling virtual communities, has provided models useful to represent the richness of these social network interactions. The SIOC Semantically-Interlinked Online Communities vocabulary provides concepts and properties that can be used to describe information from online communities e.g., message boards, wikis, weblogs, etc.. However, the SIOC ontology does not consider social aspects nor the higher order semantics hidden in linkages between community members. This paper describes SIOC-SNA-DM, an extension of the SIOC vocabulary. SIOC-SNA-DM's model is tri-partite, consisting of People, Policies, and Purposes which are social aspects observable in most social communities. A challenge to using our model is how to populate these aspects, since higher order semantics from interactions need to be extracted. Thus, we explain how this population is done with advanced text mining using a latent semantic technique over a large virtual community called Plexilandia.cl with more than 2500 musicians working on the site.Our previous work, in this area, has shown how including these social aspects help to outperform results generated by state-of-the-art techniques. One of the novelties of this present work is the introduction and the elucidation of SIOC-SNA-DM, and how to populate the ontology in order to support the social aspects needed to enhance results of Social Network Mining techniques.

Establishing a distributed system for the simple representation and integration of diverse scientific assertions

BackgroundInformation technology has the potential to increase the pace of scientific progress by helping researchers in formulating, publishing and finding information. There are numerous projects that employ ontologies and Semantic Web technologies towards this goal. However, the number of applications that have found widespread use among biomedical researchers is still surprisingly small. In this paper we present the aTag (‘associative tags’) convention, which aims to drastically lower the entry barriers to the biomedical Semantic Web. aTags are short snippets of HTML+RDFa with embedded RDF/OWL based on the Semantically Interlinked Online Communities (SIOC) vocabulary and domain ontologies and taxonomies, such as the Open Biomedical Ontologies and DBpedia. The structure of aTags is very simple: a short piece of human-readable text that is ‘tagged’ with relevant ontological entities. This paper describes our efforts for seeding the creation of a viable ecosystem of datasets, tools and services around aTags.ResultsNumerous biomedical datasets in aTag format and systems for the creation of aTags have been set-up and are described in this paper. Prototypes of some of these systems are accessible at http://hcls.deri.org/atagConclusionsThe aTags convention enables the rapid development of diverse, integrated datasets and semantically interoperable applications. More work needs to be done to study the practicability of this approach in different use-case scenarios, and to encourage uptake of the convention by other groups.

Interlinking the Social Web with Semantics

One of the most visible trends on the Web is the emergence of Social Web sites, which help people create and gather knowledge by simplifying user contributions via blogs, tagging and folksonomies, wikis, podcasts, and online social networks. Current online-community sites are isolated from one another, like islands in a sea. Various discussions might contain complementary knowledge and discussions—parts of the answer a person is looking for—but people participating in one discussion can't readily access information about related discussions elsewhere. The potential synergies among many sites, communities, and services are expensive to exploit, and their data are difficult and cumbersome to link and reuse. The main reason for this lack of interoperation is that for the most part in the Social Web, common standards still don't exist for knowledge and information exchange and interoperation. However, the Semantic Web effort aims to provide the tools needed to define extensible, flexible standards for this purpose. The Semantic Web technology stack is well defined, enabling the creation of metadata and associated vocabularies. The Semantic Web effort is in an ideal position to make Social Web sites interoperable. Applying Semantic Web frameworks including SIOC (Semantically Interlinked Online Communities) and FOAF (Friend-of-a-Friend) to the Social Web can lead to a Social Semantic Web, creating a network of interlinked and semantically rich knowledge.
