A practical and mild method for the switchable synthesis of sulfoxides or sulfones via selective oxidation of sulfides using cheap N-fluorobenzenesulfonimide (NFSI) as the oxidant has been developed. These highly chemoselective transformations were simply achieved by varying the NFSI loading with H2O as the green solvent and oxygen source without any additives. The good functional group tolerance makes the strategy valuable.

Visible-light-activated selective synthesis of sulfoxides via thiol-ene/oxidation reaction cascade

A convenient, highly selective and metal-free synthesis of sulfoxides from alkenes and thiols using NHPI as an inexpensive and reusable organophotoredox catalyst is reported. The protocol involves radical thiol-ene/oxidation reaction cascade and utilizes visible light and air (O2) as inexpensive, readily available, non-toxic and eco-sustainable reagents to afford up to 96% yields of the product at room temperature.

Selective Synthesis of Sulfoxides through Oxidation of Sulfides with Sodium Hypochlorite Pentahydrate Crystals

ChemInform Abstract: Selective Synthesis of Sulfoxides and Sulfones from Sulfides Using Silica Bromide as the Heterogeneous Promoter and Hydrogen Peroxide as the Terminal Oxidant.

Silica bromide as a heterogeneous promoter and reagent is prepared from the reaction of silica gel with PBr3 as a non-hydroscopic, filterable, cheap, and stable yellowish powder that can be stored for months. The results show that silica bromide is a suitable and efficient promoter for the chemoselective oxidation of sulfides to the corresponding sulfoxides or sulfones in the presence of 30% H2O2 in acetonitrile. The excellent yields, heterogeneous conditions, simplicity, compatibility with a variety of functionalities, and ease of isolation of the products make our procedure a practical alternative.

Selective synthesis of sulfoxides and sulfones by tantalum(V) catalyzed oxidation of sulfides with 30% hydrogen peroxide

The reaction of sulfides with 30% hydrogen peroxide catalyzed by tantalum(V) chloride in acetonitrile, i-propanol, or t-butanol selectively provided the corresponding sulfoxides in high yields. On the other hand, the reaction of sulfides with 30% hydrogen peroxide-catalyzed by tantalum(V) chloride or tantalum(V) ethoxide in methanol effectively gave the sulfones.

Selective synthesis of sulfoxides from sulfides using ultrasound

The present work aims at developing a new process to selectively synthesize sulfoxide from sulfides using ultrasound. Methyl phenyl sulfide (MPS) has been taken as a model reactant. The reaction has been carried out in ultrasonic bath with an operating frequency of 22 kHz and maximum power supply of 120 W with an actual power dissipation of ∼40 W measured using calorimetric studies. Effect of various parameters such as presence and absence of catalyst, type of catalyst (catalysts used were sodium tungstate and ammonium molybdate), temperature, concentration of hydrogen peroxide, effect of molar ratio of MPS to H 2O 2 has been investigated with an aim of obtaining the optimum conditions for the synthesis of sulfoxides. It was observed that the presence of catalyst is a must to achieve appreciable conversions. It was also observed that the periodic addition of stoichiometric amount of hydrogen peroxide instead of sudden addition of it (total quantity of hydrogen peroxide remains the same) gave better selectivity for sulfoxide. The maximum conversion achieved in the present work was ∼88.42% with sulfone formation being only 0.4% indicating a 99.6% selectivity for the desired product i.e. sulfoxides.

Selective Synthesis of Sulfoxides and Sulfones by Methyltrioxorhenium-Catalyzed Oxidation of Sulfides with Hydrogen Peroxide

Abstract Methyltrioxorhenium-catalyzed oxidation of sulfides with hydrogen peroxide in ethanol has been found to be an efficient catalytic system for the selective formation of sulfoxides and sulfones. The oxidation using an equimolar amount of hydrogen peroxide afforded sulfoxides in excellent yield, and the use of two molar amounts of hydrogen peroxide gave sulfones quantitatively. Strongly deactivated sulfide, bis(4-nitrophenyl) sulfide, was converted smoothly to the corresponding sulfoxide and sulfone in excellent yields. The functional group in the side chain of sulfide such as a carbon–carbon double bond was not affected under the reaction conditions, and the sulfur atom was selectively oxidized.
