Facile preparation of cellulose nanofiber/ZSM-5 zeolite/polyethyleneimine aerogel for selective adsorption of Cu2+ in wastewater

The development of a cost-effective and environmentally friendly adsorbent is essential for effectively removing heavy metals from wastewater. This study presents the preparation of a recyclable cellulose nanofiber (CNF)/ZSM-5 zeolite/polyethyleneimine (PEI) aerogel through chemical crosslinking and freeze-drying techniques. The synthesized aerogel was applied for the highly selective adsorption of Cu2+. The characterization of the as-prepared aerogel indicates that its three-dimensional network porous structure, along with the abundance of active sites, contributes to the effective adsorption of Cu2+. The adsorption capacity was found to be 134.23 mg/g. Furthermore, it was observed that Cu2+ adsorbed by the composite aerogel could be efficiently eluted using 0.2 M EDTA-2Na. The adsorption kinetics and isotherm studies revealed consistency with the pseudo-second-order model and Langmuir model, indicating that the adsorption process was primarily governed by monolayer chemisorption. Mechanism analysis further confirmed that surface complexation, ion exchange, and electrostatic interaction were the primary driving forces behind the excellent adsorption capabilities of the prepared aerogel. Remarkably, the structural integrity and selective adsorption of the composite aerogel remained largely unchanged even after undergoing five sorption-desorption cycles. These findings strongly suggest that the CNF/ZEM-5/PEI composite aerogel holds significant promise for achieving efficient and selective removal of copper ions in wastewater.

Alginate-based adsorbents with adjustable slit-shaped pore structure for selective removal of copper ions

Adopting effective and efficient techniques for the treatment of heavy metal pollution in water bodies plays an important role in guaranteeing the quality of water and the sustainable development of water resources. In this study, GO, MMT and SA were used as raw materials to compare the adsorption behaviors of three alginate-based adsorbents crosslinked with different valence metal ions (Ca2+, Fe3+ and Zr4+) on Cu(II). The aerogels were based on sodium alginate as the matrix material with unique slit-shaped pore structures formed by stacking effect of sheets and chemical bonding. It was found that the pore structures of the aerogels were denser and more orderly with the increase of the valence states of the crosslinked ions, and the affinity for Cu(II) in planar configuration was stronger. The Zr4+-GMSA aerogel had the maximum adsorption capacity of 126.68 mg/g and the Kd of Cu(II) was up to 50.80 L/g, which exhibited good preferential adsorption performance. The adsorption mechanism of Mn+-GMSA aerogels on Cu(II) was mainly ionic exchange, surface complexation and physical adsorption, which was explored by combining XPS and EDS characterizations of Mn+-GMSA before and after adsorption. This scheme can provide valuable and meaningful contribution to realize the selective recovery of Cu(II).

MoS2-encapsulated nitrogen-doped carbon bowls for highly efficient and selective removal of copper ions from wastewater

Capacitive deionization has been considered as a promising wastewater treatment technology because of its low-cost and highly efficient. Herein, we prepared hollow bowl-type carbon materials loaded with molybdenum sulfide (HBC-MoS2) composites and fabricated it as an innovative electrode material to remove Cu2+ in a multi-ion coexistence system. With the synergistic effect of electric double layer (EDL) and complexation between MoS2 and Cu2+, the HBC-MoS2-0.02 electrode achieved effective removal of copper ions from low concentration wastewater (25 mg/L) and high electrosorption capacity of 28.97 mg g−1 at 1.0 V. Even in the presence of competing ions (Na+/Zn2+/Cu2+), the HBC-MoS2-0.02 electrode still can effectively remove Cu2+ with a final adsorption capacity of 28 mg g−1, showing its superiority. The mechanism of Cu2+ removal by HBC-MoS2 is mainly due to the synergistic effect of EDL and complexation.

Mesoscopic engineering materials for visual detection and selective removal of copper ions from drinking and waste water sources

The monitoring and removal of abundant heavy metals such as Cu ions are considerable global concerns because of their severe impact on the health of humans and other living organisms. To meet this global challenge, we engineered a novel mesoscopic capture protocol for the highly selective removal and visual monitoring of copper (Cu2+) ions from wide-ranging water sources. The capture hierarchy carriers featured three-dimensional, microsized MgO mesoarchitecture rectangular sheet-like mosaics that were randomly built in horizontal and vertical directions, uniformly arranged sheet faces, corners, and edges, smoothly quadrilateral surface coverage for strong Cu2+-to-ligand binding exposure, and multidiffusible pathways. The Cu2+ ion-selectively active captor surface design was engineered through the simple incorporation/encapsulation of a synthetic molecular chelation agent into hierarchical mesoporous MgO rectangular sheet platforms to produce a selective, visual mesoscopic captor (VMC). The nanoscale VMC dressing of MgO rectangular mosaic hierarchy by molecularly electron-enriched chelates with actively double core bindings of azo- and sulfonamide- groups and hydrophobic dodecyl tail showed potential to selectively trap and efficiently remove ultratrace Cu2+-ions with an extreme removal capability of ~233 mg/g from watery solutions, such as drinking water, hospital effluent, and food-processing wastewater at specific pH values. In addition to the Cu2+ ion-selective removal, the VMC design enabled the continuous visual monitoring of ultratrace Cu2+ ions (~3.35 × 10−8 M) as a consequence of strong chelate-to-Cu2+ binding events among all accumulated matrices in water sources. Our experimental recycle protocol provided evidence of reusability and recyclability of VMC (≥10 cycles). With our mesoscopic capture protocol, the VMC can be a promising candidate for the selective decontamination/removal and sensitive detection of hazardous inorganic pollutants from different water sources with indoor or outdoor applications.

Green multi-functional monomer based ion imprinted polymers for selective removal of copper ions from aqueous solution

Green ion imprinted polymers (IIPs) were prepared in aqueous phase via the synergy of three functional monomers of low-cost eco-friendly gelatin (G), 8-hydroxyquinoline (HQ) and chitosan (C), namely G-HQ-C IIPs, and were applied as an effective and recyclable adsorbent to remove Cu(II) from aqueous solution. The as-prepared G-HQ-C IIPs were systematically characterized, and several major factors affecting adsorption capacity including solution pH, temperature and contact time were investigated in detail. The adsorption of Cu(II) on G-HQ-C IIPs followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic and Langmuir isotherm models, and the adsorption capacity increased with temperature increase. Moreover, the maximum adsorption capacities of G-HQ-C IIPs toward Cu(II) reached up to 111.81 mg/g at room temperature, much higher than those of most of the reported adsorbents for Cu(II). The G-HQ-C IIPs displayed excellent selectivity against seven common divalent ions with selectivity coefficients above 18.71, as well as high anti-interference ability. Additionally, a good reusability was demonstrated without significant loss in adsorption capacity after at least ten cycles. The IIPs were applied to environmental water samples for selective removal of Cu(II) with satisfactory results. By replacing Cu(II) template by Cd(II), Hg(II) and Pb(II), respectively, the obtained three kinds of IIPs based on G-HQ-C presented convincing imprinting properties, and therefore the work could provide a simple and general imprinting strategy toward various concerned heavy metal ions through multi-point interactions from multiple functional monomers.

Molecularly imprinted porous beads for the selective removal of copper ions.

In the present work, novel molecularly imprinted polymer porous beads for the selective separation of copper ions have been synthesized by combining two material-structuring techniques, namely, molecular imprinting and oil-in-water-in-oil emulsion polymerization. This method produces monodisperse spherical beads with an average diameter of ∼2-3 mm, in contrast to adsorbents produced in the traditional way of grinding and sieving. Field-emission scanning electron microscopy indicates that the beads are porous in nature with interconnected pores of about 25-50 μm. Brunner-Emmett-Teller analysis shows that the ion-imprinted beads possess a high surface area (8.05 m(2) /g), and the total pore volume is determined to be 0.00823 cm(3) /g. As a result of the highly porous nature and ion-imprinting, the beads exhibit a superior adsorption capacity (84 mg/g) towards copper than the non-imprinted material (22 mg/g). Furthermore, selectivity studies indicate that imprinted beads show splendid recognizing ability, that is, nearly fourfold greater selective binding for Cu(2+) in comparison to the other bivalent ions such as Mn(2+) , Ni(2+) , Co(2+) , and Ca(2+) . The imprinted composite beads prepared in this study possess uniform porous morphology and may open up new possibilities for the selective removal of copper ions from waste water/contaminated matrices.

Enhanced selective removal of Cu(II) from aqueous solution by novel polyethylenimine-functionalized ion imprinted hydrogel: Behaviors and mechanisms

A novel polyethylenimine-functionalized ion-imprinted hydrogel (Cu(II)-p(PEI/HEA)) was newly synthesized by 60Co-γ-induced polymerization for the selective removal of Cu(II) from aqueous solution. The adsorption performances including the adsorption capacity and selectivity of the novel hydrogel were much better than those of similar adsorbents reported. The hydrogel was characterized via scanning electron microscope, transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectra, thermal gravimetric analysis and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy to determine the structure and mechanisms. The adsorption process was pH and temperature sensitive, better fitted to pseudo-second-order equation, and was Langmuir monolayer adsorption. The maximum adsorption capacity for Cu(II) was 40.00mg/g. The selectivity coefficients of ion-imprinted hydrogel for Cu(II)/Pb(II), Cu(II)/Cd(II) and Cu(II)/Ni(II) were 55.09, 107.47 and 63.12, respectively, which were 3.93, 4.25 and 3.53 times greater than those of non-imprinted hydrogel, respectively. Moreover, the adsorption capacity of Cu(II)-p(PEI/HEA) could still keep more than 85% after four adsorption–desorption cycles. Because of such enhanced selective removal performance and excellent regeneration property, Cu(II)-p(PEI/HEA) is a promising adsorbent for the selective removal of copper ions from wastewater.

Treatment of wastewater containing copper, zinc, nickel and cobalt using Duolite ES‐467

AbstractDuolite ES‐467 was used to treat wastewater containing heavy metal ions. Sorption experiments were carried out at varying pH values, agitation speeds, reaction times, and metal ion and sorbent concentrations. Each of the parameters affects the sorption behaviour of individual metal ions. Copper sorption was greater compared with other metal ions such as zinc, nickel and cobalt. The presence of other metal ions affects copper sorption. Equilibrium isotherm curves were developed. These were used to predict that the metal ion concentration would be reduced from 100 to less than 1 mg dm−3. Fixed bed tests were conducted to investigate the efficiency of Duolite ES‐467 for the selective removal of copper ions from multi‐metal solutions. Breakthrough curves were obtained using Duolite ES‐467 for solutions containing copper, nickel and copper, zinc, nickel and cobalt. A silica support impregnated with 2-hydroxy-5-nonylacetophenone oxime (LIX 84) was prepared after surface modification by -aminopropyltriethoxysilane. Fixed-bed tests were conducted to investigate the capabilities of the prepared adsorbent with respect to the selective removal of copper ions from multi-metal solutions. Break-through curves were obtained using the modified silica for a solution containing Cu2+, Cd2+, Ni2+, Co2+ and Zn2+, as well as an industrial electronics wastewater sample. The copper adsorption capacities for the multi-metal solution and the wastewater were 0.175 and 0.198 mmolg−1, respectively under the conditions used in this study. The copper recovery ratios for the modified silica treated with the multi-metal solution and the wastewater were 86 and 91%, respectively after treating with 0.1 moldm−3 HNO3. The results show that the modified silica, prepared here, has potential value for the selective removal of copper ions from multi-component aqueous solutions containing multi-metals using a fixed-bed reactor. © 2000 Society of Chemical Industry

Selective removal of copper ions from aqueous solutions using modified silica beads impregnated with LIX 84

Silica beads immobilized with 2-hydroxy-5-nonylacetophenoneoxime (LIX 84) were prepared after silica surface modification by γ-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (SB-L). Batch and packed-column tests were conducted to evaluate the metal ion removal capabilities of the prepared adsorbent. Equilibrium isotherms of the SB-L with aqueous solutions containing copper ions were obtained. In addition, the kinetic performances for copper ion removal from aqueous solutions were investigated. The results showed that the amount of extraction increases with solution pH in the range between 1.5 and 5. The selectivity was also experimentally investigated, these results showed that the SB-L adsorbed copper ions selectively in the presence of other metal ions such as Ni2+, Co2+, Zn2+, Cd2+, Ca2+ and Mg2+. From the regeneration experiments, it was found that the copper ions adsorbed at the SB-L surface were recovered by acidic solutions. The recovery ratios were between 78% and 90%, depending on the types of acidic solutions. The results showed that the SB-L prepared may be used for the selective extraction of copper ions from aqueous solutions. © 1999 Society of Chemical Industry
