Application of the R method in solving material handling equipment selection problems

In manufacturing industries, material handling equipment plays a vital role and is considered as one of the important pillars to increase production efficiency. Hence, the selection of appropriate material handling equipment for a specific task is well acknowledged, but the complexity of this selection process drastically increases with the rise in the number of alternative equipment available in the market and a set of conflicting evaluation criteria. To resolve this problem, several multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) techniques have been proposed by past researchers. In this paper, the application potentiality of a newly developed MCDM technique, i.e. R method is explored while solving five material handling equipment selection problems, i.e. conveyor, automated guided vehicle (AGV), stacker, wheel loader and excavator. The derived ranking results are contrasted with other popular MCDM techniques to validate its potentiality in shortlisting the candidate alternatives from the best to the worst, which would ultimately help in improving the overall efficiency of the manufacturing processes.

A new framework for green selection of material handling equipment under fuzzy environment

In the rapidly changing global circumstances, managements of industrial organizations are making decisions for their survival in business atmosphere in future. Decision makers in industries are steering their respective organizations towards for appropriate decision making satisfying the condition of ‘Go green’. Appropriate decision making in fuzzy environment is always a hard task. The current investigation explores a new multi criteria decision making approach for green selection of material handling equipment under fuzzy environment. The proposed technique has the capability of capturing effects of economical, environmental and social factors of benefit, non-benefit and target based criteria under uncertainty and vague information. The proposed method is illustrated with a suitable example on material handling equipment selection under fuzzy environment. The result clearly shows that the proposed technique is useful and effective in the decision making process regarding green material handling selection under fuzzy environment.

Nowadays, the consumption is the most significant factor in the economy. The consumption requires different items, which must be produced by the industry. Production processes are realized mainly on workplaces, so their importance is inevitably. This paper presents an overview about the planning process of material handling machines, especially for the production workplaces. The research, shown in this paper, targets to develop a model, which can help to select the most suitable material handling equipment for different production workplaces. The topic presented in this paper deals with the building of selection algorithm for the exclusion of non-applicable equipment types. To show the useability of the concept an example will also be presented.

Material handling model of production workplaces

Nowadays, most of the manufacturing procedures use different workplaces to realize given production steps. At the production workplaces different material handling solutions are applied, however the selection of the suitable handling equipment is not optimized and based on experimental knowledge. The research presented in this paper targets to develop a model which can help to select the most suitable material handling equipment for different production workplaces. This paper gives an overview about the types of the workplaces in the aspects of material handling, the principals of the model building process, the structure of the possible model versions and presents an example for the applicability of the conception.

Usually, the handling characterisation of workplaces is not taken into consideration during the handling equipment selection process, so the handling solutions are not optimized and require additional modifications. In this paper, the handling parameters of production workplaces and their effects to the handling solutions are presented. The focus is on the external handling process and the relation among workplace and handling equipment parameters, and an example is also presented.

The current paper presents a taxonomy of material-handling-equipment for distribution centers, based on a Systematic Literature Review of previous works on both Material Handling Equipment in real picking-intensive logistics contexts and the Decision Support Systems [DSS] employed to solve this type of problem. The current review work intends to sort the literature on the topic through a Material Handling Equipment taxonomy supported on a Systematic Literature Review. A historical appraisal of the problem is complemented by the corresponding synthesis, conclusions and future research perspectives. The current study presents an overall view of Material Handling Equipments in real picking-intensive logistics contexts and Decision Support Systems employed to solve this type of problem. New research perspectives and future recommendations aim at a more thorough integration with expert systems (or any more efficient hybrid method) for candidate equipment assessment and final selection. This could be done by using MCDM techniques like to Stochastic Multicriteria Aceptability Analysis [SMAA].

The material handling equipment (MHE) has a close connection with layout of machinery and plays the important role in productivity of servicing or manufacturing systems. Since each of MHE has distinct characteristics than the others with respect to conflicting criteria and design experts may state the different subjective judgments with respect to qualitative criteria, the material handling equipment selection problem (MHESP) can be taken into account as a group multi-criteria decision-making (GMCDM) problem. In this paper, a version of type-2 fuzzy sets (T2FSs), named Gaussian interval type-2 fuzzy sets (GIT2FSs), is first used as an alternative to the traditional triangular membership functions (MFs) to weight criteria and sub-criteria and also evaluate of alternatives with respect to sub-criteria. The synthetic value method of GIT2FSs is then carried out to convert the assessments stated as GIT2FSs for each alternative with respect to each sub-criterion and also weights of criteria (sub-criteria) into the single fuzzy rating and weight, respectively. Then, the fuzzy weighted average (FWA) approach is adopted to integrate the single fuzzy ratings of each alternative with respect to sub-criteria and the single fuzzy weights of sub-criteria under each criterion with the aggregated weighted ratings. In next stage, ELECTRE III (ELimination Et Choix Traduisant la Realite´—elimination and choice translation reality) is generalized with GIT2FSs to select the optimal MHE through a new ranking approach. Moreover, some arithmetic operations and properties are extended to GIT2FSs. In addition, to demonstrate its potential applications, the proposed methodology is implemented in a real case study and an illustrative example, and then, the ranking results are compared with those of the others in the literature. Finally, the sensitivity analysis is carried out to show robustness and stability of the obtained results.

AHP method application in selection of appropriate material handling equipment in selected industrial enterprise

The paper deals with handling equipment that can be used to transport/handle the final products in a selected industrial enterprise. The suitable handling equipment listed in the short-listwereselected by the authors of the paper based on the entry requirements and conditions of the enterprise and trends in material/final product handling towards increasing automation, enhancing productivity and maximizing safety. The Analytic Hierarchy Process method was used to support decision making on the appropriate handling equipment and specific calculations were carried out in the Expert Choice program. The Analytic Hierarchy Process as a tool of exact decision-making methods increases the objectivity of decision in general as well as the quality of suitable handling equipment selection in a particular industrial enterprise. One of the conditions of the enterprise for the equipment selection was the use of Intelligent/Smart solutions in the process of finished goods handling from the manufacturing area to warehouse.

Intermodal Terminal Handling Equipment Selection Using a Fuzzy Multi-criteria Decision-making Model

Intermodal transport enables energy, costs and time savings, improves the service quality and supports sustainable development. The basic element of the intermodal transport system is an intermodal terminal, whose efficiency largely depends on the subsystems’ technologies. Accordingly, the topic of this paper is the evaluation and the selection of the appropriate handling equipment within the intermodal terminal. As the decision-making on the handling equipment is influenced by different economic, technical, technological and other criteria, the appropriate multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) methods have to be applied in order to solve the problem. In this paper, a novel hybrid model which combines the fuzzy step-wise weight assessment ratio analysis (FSWARA) and the fuzzy best-worst method (FBWM) is developed. The defined model is applied for solving the case study of selecting adequate handling equipment for the planned intermodal terminal in Belgrade. The reach stacker is selected as the most adequate handling equipment since it suits best the characteristics of the planned terminal in the given conditions and in relation to the defined criteria. Solving the case study demonstrated the justification for using the MCDM methods to solve these kinds of problems as well as the applicability of the proposed MCDM model.

The present study deals with the selection of procedural approach for the handling of facility layout problem (FLP). Most of the designers always try to design the layout to fulfill the practical need on the shop floor in an effective way. The procedural approach is also a way to tackle the layout problems practically. It has always been a difficult decision to select the appropriate solution approach under several selected factors. In this paper, we have demonstrated a selection of the best procedural approach for the FLP with some selected factors. In this context, we have considered some important factors such as initial data required (IDR), use of charts (UC), use of graphs and diagrams (UGD), future expansion considered (FEC), constraints considered (CC), procedure implementation (PI), and material handling equipment selection consideration (MHC). Modified digital logic (MDL) is used to assign weight to the selected factors. Fuzzy logic-based multiple attribute decision making (MADM) approach is applied for the selection. The Muther’s approach is found to be the most suitable alternative with the selected factors.

India has emerged as a fast developing country in 21 st century. From the beginning of this century country has experienced many inventions and developments in its industrial sector. During these years, export capacity of the country has increased a lot. Keeping all this factors in mind one can easily understand the importance of industries in India. In industries material handling plays very important role, because handling of material using conventional manual practices needs a huge expenditure of time, money as well as energy of the workers. For this reason, many types of material handling equipments have been suggested in the literature. As we all know, in last ten years, India has reported a remarkable progress in global market and is progressing continuously; importance of material handling facilities increases a lot. Present research work is based on material handling equipment selection for a steel industry. Yet there are many types of steel industries are present in the country but here in this research work emphasis is made on galvanizing steel manufacturing industry. One of the basic reasons of choosing this industry is that in literature very less or almost nil research has been reported by various researchers in this field. Also it has been observed by the candidate the workers in a galvanizing steel industry work in very adverse conditions which ultimately, may affect their life. In the present research work, zinc pot section of hot dipped galvanizing steel manufacturing industry which is having manual delivery system for pouring zinc and aluminum slabs has been considered as the research frame. For this system first of all criteria has been finalized with the help of industry personnel as well academicians. After that prioritization of criteria has been made with the help of Analytical Hierarchy Process, and finally scores of the alternatives (Automatic system, Conveyer’s delivery and Manual delivery) are reported using Grey Rational Analysis (GRA) model, the ranking of which has determined the best alternative.

Comparative analysis of procedural approaches for facility layout design using AHP approach

The purpose of this paper is to apply multiple attribute decision-making (MADM) approach (analytic hierarchy process - AHP) for ranking the procedural approaches available for solving the facility layout design problems (FLPs). Analytic hierarchy process is applied to rank the approaches, whereas the weight to a factor is assigned using modified digital logic (MDL) method. On the basis of assigned weight the matrix is generated, and the factors considered for analysis are as: initial data required (IDR), use of charts (UC), use of graphs and diagrams (UG), future expansion considered (FE), constraints considered (CC), procedure implementation (PI), and material handling equipment selection considered (MH). The approaches which have been compared are as: Nadler's procedure (NP), Immer's procedure (IP), Muther's procedure (MP), Apple's procedure (AP), and Reed's procedure (RP). The results of the present study demonstrate that MP gets highest rank among the compared procedures. The output ranks along with their overall priority from the present study are as: MP (0.355) > AP (0.232) > RP (0.228) > NP (0.098) > IP (0.088). The factors which are used in this study are weighted in the order as: UC (0.22) > UG (0.195) > MH (0.171) > PI (0.146) > CC (0.098) = IDR (0.098) > FE (0.073).

A software prototype for material handling equipment selection for construction sites

Abstract Nowadays, every industry is experiencing demographic, economic and technological shifts, which have made innovation indispensable for them. The innovation in the construction industry can be evidenced through availability of a diverse range of new material handling equipments (MHEs) in the market having varying advanced features. An MHE is a critical investment made by a construction company that may significantly affect its future performance, competitiveness and sustainability. Therefore, selecting the best MHE with the desirable characteristics from a vast array of available alternatives is one of the most onerous tasks as often being faced by the construction engineers. In this paper, a software prototype based on quality function deployment (QFD) technique is designed and developed in Visual BASIC 6.0 for selecting two most suitable bulk-type MHEs, i.e. excavator and wheel loader for specific applications at a construction site. It is integrated with QFD method to provide due importance to the spoken and unspoken needs of the customers/construction engineers. It automates the entire MHE selection process and also performs sensitivity analysis study to investigate the effect of changing criterion weight on the alternative MHEs' ranking pattern. Its potentiality and applicability in solving bulk-type MHE selection problems is demonstrated in detail.

Materials handling equipment selection using integrated fuzzy AHP and VIKOR methods

By combining the methods for determining the relative weights of the criteria and standard methods of ranking of alternatives, one makes optimal decisions about a certain issue, regardless of the nature of the parameters that describe it. Selection of materials handling equipment for typical conditions and working environment is one of the problems of multi-criteria analysis, i.e. the selection procedure is not sufficiently structured, dependent on broad areas of knowledge, and requires the application of efficient and effective tool for decision making. The proposed methodology of equipment selection is a combination of positive experiences in the application of known methods of decision-making and their modifications (Fuzzy AHP and VIKOR). In this case, process of the forming of system alternatives and defining criteria are illustrated in a numerical example of the equipment (device) selection within the transport and handling mechanization (trucks - forklift).

AN INTEGRATED FUZZY MULTI CRITERIA GROUP DECISION MAKING MODEL FOR HANDLING EQUIPMENT SELECTION

The problem of handling equipment selection plays a significant role in the total cost of a mining project; so that it can affect the activity and continuity of the project and is a strategic problem. In this study, an integrated model based on two fuzzy multi-criteria decision making techniques for handling equipment selection is proposed. The proposed evaluation model is derived from group decision making, fuzzy set theory, analytical hierarchy process (AHP), and Technique to Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) methods. The fuzzy AHP (FAHP) method is utilized to calculate the relative importance of the evaluation criteria, then, fuzzy TOPSIS (FTOPSIS) is applied for evaluating the feasible handling equipment in order to select the best handling system among a pool of the possible alternatives. The model is applied for a real world case study to demonstrate the capability and effectiveness of the proposed model. To investigate the result sensitiveness to the changes of the criteria weights, a sensitivity analysis is finally conducted.

A new hybrid fuzzy multi-criteria decision making model for solving the material handling equipment selection problem

The material handling system has important impact on performance of a manufacturing or service system. The material handling equipment (MHE) selection problem generally includes evaluation of finite number of alternatives which should be ranked against different qualitative or quantitative criteria or sub-criteria. Accordingly, such a problem can be considered as a multi-criteria decision-making problem. Thus, in this article, the voting approach is first used to weight criteria and sub-criteria, by introducing the assessment grades such as very low importance, low importance, moderate importance, high importance and very high importance. The synthetic value of judgements method is then adopted to convert the assessments stated as linguistics variables (by all experts) for each alternative with respect to each sub-criterion into a single fuzzy weight. Next, fuzzy weighted average is applied to aggregate the single fuzzy weights of each alternative related to sub-criteria under each criterion. Finally, the fuzzy vlsekriterijumska optimizacija i kompromisno resenje approach is used to select the optimal MHE. Also, in order to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach, a case study is considered and the results are compared with fuzzy technique for order preference by similarity to ideal solution method.
