Turbulent kinetic energy budget of sediment-laden open-channel flows: bedload-induced wall-roughness similarity

New experiments in highly turbulent, steady, subcritical and uniform water open-channel flows have been carried out to measure the mean turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) budget of sediment-laden boundary layer flows with two sizes (dp = 3 mm and 1 mm) of Plexiglas particles $({\rm relative\ density}\ = 1.192)$ . The experiments covered energetic sediment transport conditions (Shields number of $0.35 < \theta < 1.2$ ) ranging from non-capacity to full-capacity flows in bedload-to-suspension-dominated transport modes (suspension number of $0.5 < {w_s}/{u_\ast } < 1.3$ where ${w_s}$ is the settling velocity and $u_*$ is the friction velocity) and for weakly to highly inertial, finite size turbulence-particle conditions (Stokes number of 0.1 < St < 3.5 and dp/η > 10 where $\eta$ is the Kolmogorov length scale). It was shown that the effects of sediments on the TKE budget are very pronounced in all large particle experiments for which a bedload layer of several grain diameter thickness is developed above the channel bed. When compared with the corresponding reference clear-water flows, the TKE shear-production rate for the 3 mm particle flows is strongly reduced in the wall region corresponding to the bedload layer. This turbulence damping is seen to increase with sediment load until full capacity for flows with constant Shields value, as well as with Shields number value. Inside this damped TKE shear-production zone, a distinct peak of maximal turbulence production appears to coincide with the upper edge of the bedload layer delimited by a sharp gradient in mean sediment concentration. This vertically upshifted peak of TKE production is accompanied by an enhanced net downward oriented TKE flux when compared with the reference clear-water flows. The downward diffused TKE is found to act in the bedload layer as a local energy source in reasonable balance with the sediment transport term. The mechanism behind this downward TKE transport was further analysed on the basis of coherent flow structure dynamics controlled by ejection- and sweep-type events. The agreement between the height of downward directed mean TKE flux and the height below which sweep-type events dominate the Reynolds shear-stress contribution over ejections, revealed the leading role played by sweeps in mean TKE transport. This agreement holds for all reference clear-water flows supporting the well-known wall-roughness-induced dominance of the sweep contribution in turbulent, rough clear-water boundary layer flows. Furthermore, for all 3 mm particle flows, the two referred to transition levels were significantly and similarly upshifted to the upper edge of the bedload layer. Only for these sediment-laden flows, the bedload layer thickness is seen to exceed the wall-roughness sublayer of the reference clear-water flows. This supports a strong analogy between wall-roughness effects in clear-water flows and bedload layer effects in sediment-laden flows, on the mean TKE budget induced by a similarly modified coherent flow structure dynamics. The bedload layer-controlled wall roughness is finally confirmed by the good prediction of the wall-roughness parameter ks of the logarithmic velocity distribution. An empirical formulation fitting the presented measurements is presented, valid over the range of Shields number values covered herein.

Revisiting a proof of concept in quartz-OSL bleaching processes using sands from a modern-day river (the Séveraisse, French Alps)

Conditions of sediment transport and deposition in highly dynamic fluvio-glacial environments enhance incomplete bleaching of luminescence signals during sunlight exposure. Whatever the geomorphic context or application, partial bleaching has been widely reported and remains a methodological limitation for application of Optically Stimulated Luminescence (OSL) dating methods, potentially resulting in sediment-burial age overestimation. This study focuses on the highly dynamic Séveraisse River (SW French Alps) where modern-day alluvial sands of a braided reach were sampled to assess the degree of quartz-OSL partial bleaching associated with superficial pre- and post-deposition geomorphic processes. Our original approach combines (i) a photogrammetry-based survey, (ii) sediment grain-size analysis, and (iii) measurements of both portable OSL luminescence signals and conventional quartz OSL equivalent doses in modern superficial (from 0.1 to 1 cm) and sub-surface (up to 30 cm) alluvial sands exposed to sunlight for at least 19 days. Our results show high but spatially variable residual luminescence signals at the surface, measured in all grain-size fractions with both the portable luminescence reader (≥5 x106 cts/g) and conventional quartz-OSL doses (≥80 Gy), even within the uppermost millimetres of the exposed alluvial surface. Our data thus highlight poor luminescence bleaching in the Séveraisse's modern sands, during both pre-depositional transport and post-depositional exposure. In addition, our study reveals, for the first time, the significant sunlight attenuation over a few millimetres within modern alluvial sediments, perhaps conditioned by dark sand grains, and/or by superficial blanketing by silts (i.e. waning flow stage) that leads to a porosity decrease and very low sunlight penetration. We suggest the occurrence of a critical sediment layer (i.e. only a few mm thick) that could play a key role in bleaching processes for alluvial surfaces, with strong implications for our understanding of residual doses in braided systems' sandy deposits and the dynamics of such alluvial surfaces.

Water renewal and stratification modelling in small estuaries

Water renewal and flushing in small, intermittently open or closed estuaries is receiving increasing attention particularly in light of the climate change induced alterations in run-off, wave and sediment transport conditions along coasts. The challenges of predicting the stratification-circulation state and the balance between tidal or freshwater flushing in response to the mouth dynamics of small, wave-dominated estuaries is the focus of the paper. Such predictions are required for determining estuary freshwater requirements or establishing an estuary's capacity to maintain sound water quality under pollutant discharges. Advances in simulating changes in stratification-circulation over long time scales are limited. Instead attention has focused on generating indices of stratification or water quality state using heuristic methods. In this paper, systems dynamics modelling is applied to simulate the non-linear response of the estuary to changes in river and marine water fluxes. The estuary is modelled as a basin with a specified water volume to water level relationship, connected to the sea by a channel with variable sill height, but fixed width. The direction and magnitude of the flow through the mouth determines whether the sill height erodes or accretes and hence the mouth dynamics (see Slinger, 2017). The tidal flux through the mouth co-determines the volumetric exchange of salt, influencing both the stratification state of the estuary and the degree of tidal or freshwater flushing. This is also influenced by run-off. The resulting dynamic balance is captured in two bulk indices, the Estuarine Richardson number and the bulk densimetric Froude number. Using measured data from the Great Brak Estuary, South Africa, the model is calibrated. Model simulations demonstrate the importance of tidal flushing and concomitant mouth breaching for water renewal as freshwater flushing declines under scenarios of increased water abstraction. Although the estuary remains partially mixed, there is increased average salinity and a more uniform the water column. Water releases and mouth breaching bring about a more natural stratification-circulation state, but these effects are short-lived.

Controls on the Leeside Angle of Dunes in Shallow Unidirectional Flows

AbstractDunes are ubiquitous features in alluvial channels, serve as major agents of sediment transport and contribute significantly to flow resistance. Research in the past decade has illustrated the complexity of dune geometry and widespread occurrence of dunes that have a low leeside angle. However, there is a debate concerning the occurrence of such dunes and their formative processes. This paper seeks to further our understanding of low‐angle dunes by utilizing data from a robust set of shallow flow laboratory experiments detailing equilibrium bedform morphology across a range of sediment transport conditions. Analysis of bedform morphology demonstrates that dunes with low‐angle leesides are generated in shallow laboratory flows and are not restricted to deep rivers. Of the possible processes that have been proposed to explain the formation of low‐angle dunes, this finding unequivocally shows that liquefied leeside avalanches, which rely on deep flows for their generation, are not a controlling mechanism. In addition, dunes formed under suspension‐dominated conditions possess lower leeside angles compared with those formed under bedload‐dominated conditions. However, where bedload transport dominates and sediment suspension is likely of lesser importance, low‐angle dunes are still present, and preliminary analysis shows that bedform superimposition can result in lowering of the dune leeside angle. Low and intermediate angle dunes formed under these various conditions also have a lower potential for large‐scale, permanent, leeside flow separation compared with angle‐of‐repose dunes, confirming the need to account for these differences in predictions of flow resistance associated with dune form roughness.

Climate change impacts on streamflow, sediment load and carbon fluxes in the Lena River delta

Water and sediment supply are essential to the health of deltaic ecosystems. Diverse datasets were integrated to better understand how climate change is shifting the supply of water and sediment to the largest polar distributary channel pattern – the Lena River Delta. Here the increase in warming rate from an average air temperature is from 4.1 °C for the period 1950–99 to 6.1 °C during 2000–21, which is higher than in the adjacent polar regions. Streamflow and sediment yield entering the Lena Delta have increased since 1988 by 56.3 km3 and 6.1×106 t, respectively; meanwhile, the Lena River’s increases in water temperature in June, July–August and September were found to be as much as 1.1, 0.6 and 0.05 °C. These changes have a pronounced effect on sediment regimes in particular parts of the delta. Based on analyses of correlations between various hydroclimatic drivers and sediment concentration changes across particular distributaries of the Lena Delta extracted from Landsat datasets, bank degradation driven by thermal erosional processes (which are in turn related to air and soil temperature increases) is proved to be the primary factor of the sediment regime in the delta. The study also highlights that sediment load changes are sensitive to wind speed due to remobilization of bottom sediment. Sums of daily air temperature and wind speed over 3 days are correlated with sediment concentration changes in the delta. The results also indicate that carbon transport across the delta (both POC and DOC) depends on sediment transport conditions and water discharge and might increase by up to 10 %. We conclude that the Lena Delta can be recognized as the global hot spot in terms of the hydrological consequences of climate change, which is altering sediment regimes, stream hydromorphology and carbon transport.

Multi-Dimensional Collaborative Operation Model and Evaluation of Cascade Reservoirs in the Middle Reaches of the Yellow River

Reservoir operation optimization is a technical measure for flood control and is beneficial owing to its reasonable and reliable control and application of existing water conservancy and hydropower hubs, while ensuring dam safety and flood control, as well as the normal operation of power supply and water supply. Considering the beneficial functions of reservoirs, namely flood control and ecological protection, this paper firstly established a two-objective optimal operation model for the reservoir group in the middle reaches of the Yellow River. We aim to maximize the average output of the cascade reservoir group and minimize the average change in ecological flow during the operation period under efficient sediment transport conditions, with the coordination degree of water and sediment as the constraints of reservoir discharge flows. The paper aims to construct an evaluation index system for reservoir operation schemes, apply a combined approach of objective and subjective evaluations, and introduce the gray target and cumulative prospect theories. By uniformly quantifying the established scheme evaluation index system, screening the reservoir operation schemes with the fuzzy evaluation method, and selecting the recommended scheme for each typical year, this paper provides a new scientific formulation of the operation schemes of reservoirs in the middle reaches of the Yellow River. The selected schemes are compared with actual data, demonstrating the effectiveness of joint reservoir operation and for multidimensional benefits in terms of power generation, ecology, and flood control.

Development of Suspended Sediment Monitoring of the Tisza Using an Indirect Measurement Method

The Tisza River experienced successive flood peaks between 1998 and 2010. The reasons of the increased flood height are various, one of them is overbank floodplain accumulation. The aim of the present study is to apply and test an alternative sediment measurement method to evaluate the sediment transport of the Tisza River, Hungary. The new method could help practitioners to better understand the fluvial processes. A significant problem with the current sediment measurement practice is that it does not consider or just to a limited extent, the hydrological conditions of a river. The data measured at the turbidity measuring station installed in the Middle Tisza at Szolnok are evaluated to determine whether or not this measurement procedure can be applied for the highly various sediment transport conditions of the Tisza. In measurement campaigns and based on continuous data from the turbidity measuring probe, a close relationship between near-bank turbidity and suspended sediment concentration was established. The suspended sediment concentrations calculated from the near-bank turbidity were compared with the results of suspended sediment yield from a few cross-section measurements. The results are encouraging; despite the limited number of measurements, the relationship between the parameters is close. In order to make the method more precise, additional series of measurements are needed, which also cover the high water range.

Hydraulic characteristics of the river flow and sediment transport conditions in the downstream pool of the hydroelectric complex

In this paper, the navigable section of the Svir River, located in the lower reaches of the Nizhne-Svirsky hydroelectric complex, is considered. Special in-situ observations were made in this section to study the hydraulic regime of the river flow under the conditions of unsteady water movement. The study has showed that the kinematic characteristics of the flow in the downstream pool vary with the distance from the site of the waterworks and depend on the regime of the discharge flows. The nature of the transformation of releases in the downstream under open channel and ice conditions has been studied. The values and intensity of changes in the main characteristics of the river flow during the propagation of the tail water wave in the lower reaches such as the nature of changes in the level regime and the slopes of the free surface on the hydraulic structures, the regime of water flow velocities, have been evaluated. The main hydraulic parameters of the river flow such as the values of the Froude number, the Chézy’s coefficient and the water flow modulus are determined. The character of changes in local and convective accelerations is studied and their contribution to the general value of energy losses along the stream length is evaluated. Numerical experiments make it possible to identify the peculiarities of sediment movement in conditions of unsteady water flow and to develop recommendations for modelling channel transformations in such conditions. It is found that during daily and weekly regulation of the river discharge, sediment transport is activated at the moment when a wave of daily water discharge is passing from the upstream reservoir of the hydroelectric power plant. At the same time, the basic parameters of sediment transport such as the speed of dune movement and sediment discharge increase in comparison with the stationary movement of the water.

Modeling the spatially distributed nature of subglacial sediment transport and erosion

Abstract. Glaciers expel sediment as they melt, in addition to ice and water. As a result, changing glacier dynamics and melt produce changes to glacier erosion and sediment discharge, which can impact the landscape surrounding retreating glaciers, as well as communities and ecosystems downstream. Currently, numerical models that transport subglacial sediment on sub-hourly to decadal scales are one-dimensional, usually along a glacier's flow line. Such models have proven useful in describing the formation of glacial landforms, the impact of sediment transport on glacier dynamics, and the interactions among climate, glacier dynamics, and erosion. However, these models omit the two-dimensional spatial distribution of sediment and its impact on sediment connectivity – the movement of sediment between its detachment in source areas and its deposition in sinks. Here, we present a numerical model that fulfills a need for predictive frameworks that describe subglacial sediment discharge in two spatial dimensions (x and y) over time. SUGSET_2D evolves a two-dimensional subglacial till layer in response to bedrock erosion and changing sediment transport conditions. Numerical experiments performed using an idealized alpine glacier illustrate the heterogeneity in sediment transport and bedrock erosion below the glacier. An increase in sediment discharge follows increased glacier melt, as has been documented in field observations and other numerical experiments. We also apply the model to a real alpine glacier, Griesgletscher in the Swiss Alps, where we compare outputs with annual measurements of sediment discharge. SUGSET_2D accurately reproduces the general quantities of sediment discharge and the year-to-year sediment discharge pattern measured at the glacier terminus. The model's ability to match the measured data depends on the tunable sediment grain size parameter, which controls subglacial sediment transport capacity. Smaller grain sizes allow sediment transport to occur in regions of the bed with reduced water flow and channel size, effectively increasing sediment connectivity into the main channels. The model provides the essential components of modeling subglacial sediment discharge on seasonal to decadal timescales and reveals the importance of including spatial heterogeneities in water discharge and sediment transport in both the x and y dimensions in evaluating sediment discharge.

Hydro-morphological simulation of the stilling basin of Mazar dam with 3D schemes

In the development of water resources projects with large hydraulic infrastructures, alterations to the natural flow regime will increase the erosive processes on the discharge structures due to variability of the turbulent velocities and the particle transport. We analyzed the case of the Mazar dam, a project designed to regulate the solid and liquid flows that come from the Paute river basin. Erosive processes of great magnitude are generated in the stilling basin of Mazar dam, due to the intensity of turbulent velocities produced in extreme events. We applied the Delft3D numerical model to simulate the hydrodynamic and sediment transport conditions to evaluate the stability conditions of the Mazar dam stilling basin. With the results obtained, vulnerable zones have been identified in the stilling basin. We recommended mitigation measures with the installation of a geomembrane to reduce the erosive processes in the vulnerable zones.

Effects of sediment supply on scour at submerged grade control structures

Grade control structures (GCSs) are common river training structures constructed to prevent riverbed degradation. Existing scour predictors for GCSs are based on flume experiments with either no sediment supply or equilibrium sediment transport conditions, the quantitative impacts of sediment supply on the scour at submerged GCSs are still unclear. The present study reports a series of flume experiments to investigate the effects of sediment supply on scour at submerged GCSs. The experimental results show that, compared with the equilibrium sediment transport condition, a decrease of upstream sediment supply rate can reduce the upstream scour depth (down to zero), increase the downstream scour depth (maximumly by 2.3 times) and change the scour process at a submerged GCS. If the sediment supply rate is close to the sediment transport capacity of the flow, the downstream scour depth first increases rapidly and then oscillates obviously around an equilibrium value (i.e. quasi-live-bed scour). If the sediment supply rate is close to zero, the downstream scour depth oscillates initially, then increases monotonically with time towards an equilibrium value (i.e. quasi-clear-water scour). Based on the experimental data and theoretical analysis, the quantitative impacts of sediment supply rate on the equilibrium scour depth at submerged GCSs are evaluated; and calculation methods considering the sediment supply are proposed for estimating the equilibrium scour depth at submerged GCSs.

Lateral Erosion of Bedrock Channel Banks by Bedload and Suspended Load

AbstractBedrock rivers carry large amounts of fine sediment in suspension. We developed a mechanistic model for erosion of bedrock channel banks by impacting bedload and suspended load particles that are advected laterally by turbulent eddies (advection‐abrasion model). The model predicts high lateral erosion rates near the bed, with rates decreasing up to the water surface. The model also predicts greater erosion within the suspended load layer than the bedload layer for many typical sediment supply and transport conditions explored. We compared the advection‐abrasion model with a previously derived model for lateral erosion of bedrock banks by bedload particles deflected by stationary bed alluvium (deflection‐abrasion model). Erosion rates predicted by the deflection‐abrasion model are lower, except within limited conditions where sediment is transported near the threshold of motion and the bed is near fully covered in sediment. Both processes occur in bedrock rivers at the same time, so we combined the advection‐abrasion and deflection‐abrasion models and found that the lateral erosion rate generally increases with increasing transport stage and relative sediment supply for a given grain size. Application of our combined‐abrasion model to a natural bedrock river with a wide distribution of discharge and supply events, and mixed grain sizes, indicates that finer sediment dominates the lateral erosion on channel banks in low sediment supply environments and can be as important as coarser sediment in high sediment supply environments.

Morphohydraulic of a dam-impacted large river: The São Francisco River, Brazil

Many studies have highlighted dam impacts in the reduction of the transmission of nutrient loads and suspended sediments downstream, increasing coastal erosion (sediment budget) and water residence time, beyond modifying the channel planform on a reach scale. However, the morphohydraulic changes, which are induced by flow regulation, have been little explored. This study has sought to analyze temporal changes in the at-a-station hydraulic geometry from 9 cross-sections along the São Francisco River, comparing the pre and post-dam periods. In addition to that, it was also sought to compare our results with other tropical river systems and assess the relationships of morphohydraulic parameters with channel patterns and functional trends. We have used field data collected by the National Water Agency and the Geological Survey of Brazil covering the middle, lower-middle, and lower courses of the São Francisco River. Potential functions were extracted using the least squares fit method. We have applied the Mann-Whitney non-parametric statistical test to assess any dataset changes. Finally, we have analyzed the data through the ternary diagram. Our results have demonstrated that the São Francisco River has high bank stability and variations in flow are mainly accommodated by changes both in depth and flow velocity. We found changes in the sensitivity of width, depth, and velocity in the post-dam period that imply high mobility of the cross-sections in the ternary diagram. Changes in land use patterns are potentially associated with these observed changes. Despite the São Francisco banks being stable in the analyzed cross-sections, the sensitivity of the channel width increased in the post-dam period. Differences were observed between the response patterns in the post-dam period in the physiographic provinces of the São Francisco River. However, the increase in width sensitivity predominates, with few exceptions. Hydraulic geometry analyses have proved to be essential for the characterization of the functional dynamics of river systems and allowing inferences about sediment transport conditions, flow stage, and channel stability.

The Influence of Drying on the Aeolian Transport of River‐Sourced Sand

AbstractTransgression and regression of water levels (stages) have impacted the evolution of aeolian landforms and sedimentary deposits throughout geologic history. We studied this phenomenon over a 5‐day period of reduced flow on the Colorado River in Grand Canyon National Park, AZ, USA, in March 2021. These transient low flows exposed river‐channel sand deposits to the air, causing progressive desiccation (drying) and thereby making these deposits susceptible to aeolian transport. We measured aeolian threshold friction velocities (u*t) for sand saltation and PM10 dust emissions, as well as other characteristics, on a subaerially exposed sandbar and downwind aeolian dunefield during each day of the low river flow. The sandbar transitioned from supply‐limited to transport‐limited aeolian sediment transport conditions during the regression in river water stage. A possible tipping point between the two transport conditions occurred approximately 48 hr after the drop in river flow. The empirically measured u*t decreased as the sandbar sediment dried with increased subaerial exposure time. Theoretical estimates and empirical measurements of u*t corresponded closely on the aeolian dunefield and on the sandbar when it was drier during the third and fourth day of the experiment. Eighty‐seven percent of the variability in u*t was explained by empirical models that provide practical estimates of aeolian transport potential of subaerial river sediment deposits using monitoring data that are commonly available in this and other river systems. The work provides theoretical insight into the response of aeolian processes to sediment supply changes driven by periods of anthropogenic activity, drought, and climate change.

The impacts of near-bed flow characteristics on river bed sediment transport under ice-covered conditions in 2016–2021

Global climate change has been projected to affect hydrology, the ice-covered flow period and river morphology (including changed sediment transport conditions) in northern high-latitude regions. To understand the impact of the expected shortening of the ice-covered period on bedload transport, one needs to understand the present sediment transport in these high-latitude rivers with annually occurring ice cover. Thus, the aims are (1) to define the impacts of ice cover on near-bed flow characteristics during hydrologically varying years, and (2) to analyse the impacts of these mid-winter flow characteristics on the bed sediment transport potential. The analyses are based on Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP: 2016–21) and Acoustic Doppler Velocimeter (ADV: 2020–21) measurements performed in mid-winter ice-covered conditions of the sandy and small (circa 20 m wide) Pulmanki River in northern Finnish Lapland.Despite the ice-covered river conditions in winter, sediment transport occurs even during these harshest mid-winter conditions. The critical velocities and shear velocities of mid-winter conditions were exceeded in winters 2016–2021, and bedload transport occurred according to bedload measurements. Three different situations occurred regarding the bed sediment transport and near-bed velocity conditions: (1) high measured mid-winter discharges indicate high velocities throughout the meander bend; (2) low measured mid-winter discharges cause low near-bed velocities throughout the meander bend; (3) winters having intermediate discharges indicate near-bed velocities and sediment transport potential being higher at the upstream inlet and apex sections of the meander bend but clearly lower downstream of the apex. The confinement by the river ice cover, i.e. bottom-fast ice, explains the velocity variation. The near-bed velocities were the highest at the upstream inlet section of a symmetrical meander bend, where the measurement cross-sections were narrower and shallower. The velocities were the lowest downstream of the apex, where the channel changed from relatively narrow to wider and deeper.

The Influence of Transport Stage on Preserved Fluvial Cross Strata

AbstractFluvial cross strata are depositional products of bedform migration that record formative flow and sediment transport conditions on planetary bodies. Bedform evolution varies with transport stage even under constant flow depths, but our understanding of how prevailing sediment transport conditions affect preserved cross strata is limited. Here, we analyzed experimental bedform evolution and preserved set thickness spanning threshold‐of‐motion to suspension‐dominated transport conditions at multiple equilibrium flow depths. Results show that bedform trough depth and mean preserved set thickness have a parabolic dependence on transport stage, with maximum values observed at intermediate transport stages. Our results indicate that transport stage is a key control on the flow‐depth‐normalized set thickness but set thickness is a poor indicator of flow depth. Thus, the dependence of bedform dimensions on transport stage should be considered in paleohydraulic reconstruction, and the analysis of set thickness may aid in the estimation of ancient fluvial sediment flux.

Comparative hydraulic and sedimentologic study of ripple formation using experimental turbidity currents and saline currents

ABSTRACT Saline currents (SCs) have commonly been used to model muddy turbidity currents (TCs) in a laboratory. However, little is known about the limitations of this proxying, in particular when concerning processes and products related to their sedimentologic and stratigraphic imprints. The present study is aimed at investigating experimental hydraulic and sedimentological conditions and processes involved in the generation and development of bedforms by both SCs and TCs, when similar input conditions are applied (discharge, slope, densimetric Froude number). In all performed runs reported herein, only ripples were observed to form, and were identified and classified using known criteria such as their dimensions, near-bed shear stresses (), shear velocities (), and grain Reynolds values (Re*). Turbidity currents were observed to deposit sediments carried by the flow predominantly in the upstream section of the flume, increasing bed slope and thus increasing , , and near-bed concentrations (cb). This resulted in longer-wavelength bedforms compared to those generated by SCs under similar input conditions in those sections of the flume. On the other hand, along the downstream sections of the flume, bed slopes were observed to remain similar for all experiments, and both types of currents showed similar vertical distribution of velocities, concentrations, and stable stratification. Measured bedform wavelengths and heights were slightly higher when generated by SCs, due to the coarser bed material observed in SCs (which influenced the increase in near-bed turbulent intensities). Moreover, TCs presented a slight decrease in turbulence intensities due to their observed high near-bed suspended-sediment concentration. Spatial and temporal changes in several hydraulic parameters in both SCs and TCs highlight the role of sediment suspension in modifying turbulent processes and vertical stratification of these flows, depending on their concentrations. Both hydraulic and sedimentologic observations of this study support in principle the assumption that SCs can be used experimentally as a surrogate for diluted TCs to reproduce bedforms classified as ripples, as long as both type of currents reach similar hydraulic and sediment-transport conditions, in particular for depth-averaged concentration Cvol < 1% and near-bed concentration cb < 2%.

The impact of submarine cable laying on the surrounding marine environment in Lvhua Island

In the process of laying the submarine cable on Lvhua Island, the sediment movement affects the surrounding area. A 2D hydrodynamic model about the Lvhua Island and its surrounding is established by MIKE 21. During the process, there are different effects in different time. The numerical simulation at the different tides is used to determine the conditions of sediment transport and to assess the impact of the project on the environment. The results show that the sediment diffuses with the tide as the concentration decreases. During the spring tide to the slack of spring tide and during the slack of spring tide to the neap tide, it mainly affects the sea area of West Lvhua Island and East Lvhua Island within half an hour after laying construction, and the suspended sediment diffuses southeast with the passage of time. During the neap tide to the slack of neap tide and during the slack of neap tide to the spring tide, it mainly affects the sea area of West Lvhua Island and Huaniao Island within half an hour after laying construction, and the suspended sediment also diffuses southeast with the passage of time. After 3 h of laying construction, the maximum range of suspended sediment for the 4 different tides is 25.54 km 2, 36.783 km 2, 24.782 km 2 and 59.322 km 2, respectively. However, the concentration of suspended sediment in the sea area is all less than 150 mg/L, having little effect on the concentration of suspended sediment in the surrounding sea.

Non-equilibrium concentration profile formulas of suspended sediment and their preliminary applications

The vertical concentration profiles in non-equilibrium sediment transport processes generally deviate from the equilibrium concentration distribution of suspended sediment. The non-equilibrium concentration profile formulas currently available are those of Han and Brown, respectively. However, the complexity of these formulas limits their use in practical calculations. To improve the usefulness of these formulas, the unknown parameters in Han's formula are reduced from three to two, and the three different forms of Brown's formula are transformed into one. These formulas then are proved to be essentially the same to some extent, and only different in the expression form of the exponent. Han's formula then is improved, based on which the theoretical calculation methods and distribution characteristics of non-equilibrium profiles are presented. Han's and Brown's formulas are verified qualitatively and quantitatively. Finally, these formulas are applied in the investigation of the characteristics of certain physical quantities, such as the recovery factor of sediment concentration, near-bottom sediment flux, and the non-equilibrium Péclet number in the non-equilibrium sediment transport process. These results clearly reveal that the magnitude of these physical quantities decreases in the erosion process and increases in the deposition process. The results also show that the formulas are largely applicable for the non-equilibrium sediment transport conditions.

Prediction of Mobility and Burial of Objects on Sandy Seafloor

A numerical model was developed to predict mobility and burial of seafloor cylindrical objects. The model contains four components: 1) object's physical parameters such as diameter, length, mass, and rolling moment; 2) dynamics of rolling cylinder around its major axis; 3) empirical sediment scour model; and 4) seabed environmental characteristics such as currents, waves (peak period, significant wave height), sediment density, and medium sediment grain size. Under the sponsorship of the Department of Defense Strategic Environmental Research and Development Program, a field experiment was conducted from April 21 to May 23, 2013 off the coast of Panama City, FL, USA to measure both objects' mobility using sector scanning and pencil beam sonars and simultaneous environmental time-series data of the boundary layer hydrodynamics and sediment transport conditions for driving mobility. Comparison between modeled and observed data shows the model capability. Future work needs to consider more realistic object shapes and motions such as pitch and yaw, and wavy seabed.
